  • Here’s Exactly How to Get Rid of a Pimple Overnight

Here’s Exactly How to Get Rid of a Pimple Overnight

    [ad_1]

Pimples are unexpected visitors that are never welcomed and tend to appear at the worst possible times. The first instinct is to pick at them, pop them, then cry—pimples don’t go down without a fight. However, sometimes disrupting them only creates a new crop of bumps that sends you down the rabbit hole of remedies on how to (safely) get rid of pimples overnight with the least possible damage.

Word of advice: popping may give you some momentary hope, but can cause further damage in the long run. The sad truth is that you can’t exactly eliminate a pimple in an hour, and even getting rid of one overnight can be a challenge. However, there’s no need to resort to popping. It’s possible to rid acne of its worst traits if you employ a diligent skincare regimen. Remedies can range from face serums to pimple patches to injections.

Pimples are small micro-infections of hair follicles,” explains Dr. Purvisha Patel, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare. “You may not be able to get ‘rid’ of a pimple overnight, but you can make it look a lot better, so it appears to be gone.”

Dr. Angela J. Lamb, director of the Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology Faculty Practice in New York City, adds that there are “no guarantees” when it comes to a bedtime miracle, but there are several steps you can follow to get your skin glowing just in time.

Read on for derm-approved tips for minimizing breakouts.

Tip 1: Make sure you’re using the right ingredients.

Stop staring at your pimple for a second and do a little research on it. Dr. Patel explains that pimples are commonly caused by four things: follicular occlusion, microbe growth, sebum production (or adding oil to your skin), and inflammation.

All these issues can be addressed when a pimple is in its early stage. “The most common way to address these issues is to use benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, tree oil, or salicylic acid products before you go to bed,” says Dr. Patel.

Benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching agent that kills microbes and dries up oil in the follicle.

Similar to benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil and sulfur also work by drying up the pimple. “Using these products can make the pimple look smaller in the morning,” explains Dr. Patel.

Dr. Lamb also recommends using topical prescription products if you happen to have any in your medicine cabinet. Gels that contain clindamycin—an antibiotic—or topical minocycline can quickly reduce the appearance of an angry zit.

However, if you prefer to use products that don’t require a doctor’s note, you can head to the nearest drugstore to pick up a face wash or serum that contains salicylic acid first. “Salicylic acid products not only dry up the pimple and kill any microbes, but also exfoliate the skin on top to let any accumulated puss out of the follicle,” says Dr. Patel. (Gross, but effective.)

Tip 1: Wash with a quality cleanser.

Spot treatments and pimple patches get all the hype for acne emergencies, but don’t ignore the power of a good cleanser. You can find one imbued with the ingredients mentioned above—such as the Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser, which has two percent salicylic acid—or invest in another good exfoliating wash.

Exfoliating cleansers are perfect for acne, as they help unclog the pores to not only treat pimples, but also prevent them from occurring,” says Dr. Patel. This classic exfoliating cleanser from Cerave purges impurities from your skin without leaving it feeling stripped bare. It’s made from ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides to restore balance as it fights breakouts.

Tip 3: If you’re getting desperate, try hydrocortisone cream.

Yes, it’s for more than just mosquito bites!

Dr. Patel says over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can be a quick fix for redness, so long as you don’t use it for more than three nights in a row. Don’t layer it on too thick, either. If you’re not careful, the cream may block your pores.

    1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream

    1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream

    1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream

It’s best to find a hydrocortisone cream that is hyaluronic acid-based, as hyaluronic acid is a water-binding molecule that doesn’t clog pores.

Tip 4: Stay away from edible ingredients.

Products formulated with coconut oil, olive oil, or almond oil sound luxurious and healthy. When it comes to acne treatment, these oils only reinforce the problem. Steer clear of edible ingredients if you’re amidst a pimple crisis.

“If we can eat the product, bacteria and fungus can eat the product,” Dr. Patel says, “and this could possibly make more pimples.”

Tip 5: Use a good spot treatment or pimple patch.

Dr. Lamb highly recommends putting a well-reviewed pimple patch on a problem area, as the treatment “usually cannot hurt.” Avoid overusing them, especially ones that contain acids or benzoyl peroxide, as they can create additional irritation.

When you’re in a bind, Dr. Patel prefers turning to spot treatments, which “work better for overnight fixes,” she says. “Blister bandages or hydrocolloid patches work by pulling the contents of a pimple out versus topicals that dry up the pimple.”

Tip 5: Invest in cortisone injections.

If you have access to a dermatologist the day before your major event, it’s true you can get a cortisone injection to treat your zit immediately. But make sure you’re thinking seriously about the level of necessity.

“They are truly for a pimple emergency,” says Dr. Patel. “Think a day before your wedding or prom-level of emergency.” While steroid injections decrease inflammation of the pimple immediately, the side effects of steroid injections range from skin thinning to lightning to possible indentation at the injection site. They are NOT recommended as a regular pimple treatment.

Tip 6: Try a DIY treatment.

It’s possible to stir up a great at-home acne treatment with a few ingredients in your kitchen. Try the following:

    1. A small crushed-up aspirin paste to a pimple helps with drying up the spot and inflammation.
    2. Toothpaste—the opaque kind, not gel—can be used to dry up pimples.
    3. Ice to a red pimple gives immediate blood vessel constriction and helps with redness.
    4. Conversely, you can use a warm compress to bring a pimple to a head faster, according to Dr. Lamb.

Tip 7: Believe it or not, popping can be an option. Just proceed with extreme caution.

If you’ve exhausted all your options, nothing has worked, and you’re hours away from walking down the aisle with a massive whitehead, it’s finally time to consider popping.

Dr. Lamb warns that squeezing a zit is normally a huge no-no. But if a pimple has a huge whitehead—and all its contents are visible at the top—you can use clean, gloved hands or cotton swabs to apply gentle pressure and pop. The problem, she explains, comes when you pop pimples that aren’t ready or squeeze with dirty fingers.

Squeezing them with non-sterile fingernails can lead to spreading of the micro-infection, more inflammation, and scarring,” explains Dr. Patel. So, in most instances, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

    Tip 8: Trust your concealer.

Makeup was made for times like these. It’s possible to make a zit look nonexistent, even if it hasn’t disappeared entirely, by purchasing a quality drugstore concealer that won’t break the bank. Dr. Lamb loves Make Up For Ever’s concealer, or you can try a green concealer, which counteracts the redness of acne and inflammation. Either way, you’ll end up looking stunning—pimple or not.

Much like fashion, beauty trends are cyclical—so what goes around comes around. Right now, the’90s are back in style in every which, way, and form. But before you prep dinner for your Tamagotchi and watch an episode of Boy Meets World in your blow-up chair, it’s time to sit down at your vanity and soak up some inspiration.

Keep in mind, there wasn’t just one look that defined the decade. “The short cropped bob, voluminous bouncy blowouts, long hair with blunt ends and face-framing layers, sleek updos with face-framing pieces, voluminous bombshell updos with face-framing pieces...” the list goes on for hairstylist and TRESemmé partner Justine Marjan.

We’ve collected 20 of the decade’s biggest beauty icons—Winona, Brandy, and all the Supers are all in attendance—to serve as your muses. You’ll find natural curls, box braids, updos, and a whole lot of butterfly clips to enjoy. Just be sure to ignore the barely-there eyebrows... those aren’t coming back anytime soon.

  • Sofia Richie’s Body Sculptor Shares Her Secrets

Sofia Richie’s Body Sculptor Shares Her Secrets

    [ad_1]

Rebecca Faria has sculpted some of the world’s most familiar bodies in preparation for their highest-profile moments: she was on hand for Sofia Richie’s wedding weekend, prepped Kim Kardashian for the Met Gala, and snatched Jennifer Aniston for her Allure cover. Her expertise? Lymphatic drainage massage, or the practice of coaxing excess water and toxins towards the lymph nodes in order to detox them from the body.

The lymph system is a key part of our immune system and helps maintain our body’s fluid levels and filter out bacteria. But our lifestyle and environment can slow the system’s function, which is where Faria comes in. Her technique reduces water retention, improves cellulite, and boosts circulation— helping clients achieve an extra-aliveness that seems to elude us normies.

    Micheal P. H. Clifford

Faria arrived in the States from Brazil in 2019, speaking no English, but she’s quickly gained A-list fans and a waitlist of thousands, many who’ve likely seen the drastic before-and-afters on her Instagram. One of her clients, TikTok star Addison Rae, told ELLE, “I noticed a difference after one session. Rebecca has this aura that’s so attractive. She’s always explaining exactly what she’s doing and why it’s helpful to my body. After a session, I feel like the best version of me.”

preview for Elle US Section: Beauty

Despite the demand for a session with her, Faria’s not gatekeeping her secrets. Below, she shares her formula for achieving similar results.

What sparked your interest in lymphatic massage, and how did you build your clientele?

Faria: In Brazil, lymphatic [massage] is a part of the culture. It’s almost like getting your nails done here.

After finishing my master’s degree, slowly, I was able to pull my technique together. When I came to the U.S., I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t have any help, and I was trying to bring something that didn’t exist here. How would I convince people to get lymphatic [massage] done when they didn’t know what it was? That was my biggest struggle. I was hoping that I would have a few clients that would believe in my work. I would give people free treatments so they would feel the benefits, and then eventually they became clients and would refer friends. I’d do house calls by Uber. In the beginning, it’s just surviving.

    This is an image

    Rachpoot/Bauer-Griffin

Why do we need lymphatic drainage massage, and what are we draining? Water weight?

In a perfect world, our lymphatic system should be able to do all the work on its own. However, because we expose ourselves to an overwhelming lifestyle, our lymphatic system can get overloaded. You do lymphatic massage to help to speed up the [detox] process. Everyday, we are exposed to pollution, processed food, stress, lack of sleep, lack of water intake. Every time your body feels attacked, it’s going to protect itself by throwing water, trying to release that inflammation.

Water weight has nothing to do with fat. Water retention is a consequence of inflammation. It’s how your body reacts when something doesn’t go right. Example: if I punch you in your face, you’re gonna get swollen. If you get fillers, injections, you’ll get swollen. Surgeries, because you’re attacking your body. Pregnancy. If you eat processed food, you’re also going to be swollen. So [inflammation] is a natural response of the body.

How do we maintain a healthy lymphatic system that works well on its own?

The answer is simple habits. Don’t stress your body. Move your blood. Our lymphatic flow and our blood work together. They’re best friends. In order to move your lymphatic system, you need to move your blood. You can walk, you can go to the gym, you can do Pilates, you can jump, but you just need to move your blood. Elevate your legs. I have an infrared sauna in my spa that shakes, so the vibration also helps.

The second thing: I believe so much in tongue scraping. When we wake up, our tongue is full of bacteria. The first thing you need to do is clean your tongue. You cannot eat or drink anything before cleaning it, otherwise you’re going to push back all the bacteria. First thing in the morning, tongue scrape, brush your teeth. Then, drink water [to] protect your stomach. You can have breakfast and your body will be ready to receive those things because you will be clean and protected.

I also believe in a sleep routine. We produce two hormones [lectin and ghrelin] that help with our appetite and fat storage, and in order to produce those hormones we need to have enough time in deep sleep. If you don’t have a good sleep routine, you will miss those hormones. You’re going to be tired, stressed, and you’re going to crave sugar. And that’s what happens when we are going through stressful moments. We never crave salads… we crave hamburgers, we crave pizza, because those hormones are not balanced. A good sleep routine helps with the lymphatic system because it helps with whatever you’re craving.

Drink lots of water. I like to drink between half a gallon and one gallon per day. If we don’t control how much water we’re drinking, we’re probably not drinking enough, because we just forget about it.

There’s something else: avoid toxic relationships. [They] will raise your cortisol levels, which will mess up your other hormones.

Is it necessary to remove caffeine and alcohol if we want an optimal lymphatic system?

I like to live my life easy. And I think if we cut everything, we’ll raise our cortisol levels. If you like coffee, have a coffee in the morning. And if you like to drink, you can have some drinks on the weekend with your friends. We need to find a balance. Because if you restrict yourself too much, you’re going to avoid some problems, but you’re going to create other problems. And that’s something I see a lot here in America. I have clients who are perfectly healthy — they eat the most organic food and they exercise all day long, but their levels of anxiety are so high they end up messing up their lymphatic system. It’s impossible to be perfect. Emotions can affect you as badly as food. It’s not sustainable [to limit yourself] in the long term.

I love your holistic approach to all of this. OK, you’ve worked on some of the most famous people in Hollywood, like Jennifer Aniston, Diddy, and Kim Kardashian. How often do you work with them?

All my clients come regularly, once or twice a month. Some do [lymphatic massage] every week. It’s just part of their routine, almost like working out. You don’t work out for one event. If you do it once, you’ll look skinnier, because you have less water retention. But if you don’t keep going, and if you don’t combine [massage] with a healthy lifestyle, you won’t be able to improve your lymphatic system, which is the goal. You want your lymphatic system to work well on its own.

    This is an image

    Sean Zanni

When it comes to travel, how can we support our lymphatic system? I always feel like when I get off a plane, I look so ragged.

When you travel, because of the pressure of the flight, your blood flow slows down. Your blood flow is slower, which means your lymphatic flow is slower. Your digestion is slower. When you get off a plane, you’re dealing with stress from the airport, you are jet-lagged, and the whole combination will stress your lymphatic system. The best way to deal with this is exercising before and after [a flight]. As soon as you arrive, go for a ten minute walk, put your legs up, drink some water, and you’re brand new. But what do we usually do? We arrive, we’re tired, we go out for dinner, we eat whatever we want. We’re jet-lagged, we don’t sleep well, so it just gets worse.

Great advice. By the way, congratulations on your new baby. Is lymphatic massage safe to do while pregnant?

The pregnancy lymphatic massage is a different technique. When we’re pregnant, we produce up to fifty-percent more fluid, so it’s normal to feel swollen. But if you get lymphatic [massage] every week, you are helping your lymphatic system to not get so affected by the pregnancy.

The best thing to do is prepare your body before getting pregnant. Put your lymphatic system in a good place before getting pregnant and during the pregnancy. But usually people wait until they’re seven or eight months, and they’re super swollen. The best thing to do is prevent. Get your lymphatic system in a good place before you have all the water retention.

I’ve gotten so many tips from the how-to’s on your Instagram, but I love how everything you’ve shared is so holistic and brings our lifestyles into consideration.

Your daily habits are way more important than any massage you do. The massage itself is just the cherry on top of the cake.

    Meet the Expert

    elle line break

Sarah Lund is a professional hairstylist and Style Master at Kevin Murphy.

What kind of shampoo should someone with curly hair use?

    elle line break

Not all shampoos are created equal, nor is every formula suitable for curly hair. Lund explains that every head of hair has different needs and to get the healthiest, best-looking hair possible, it’s crucial to fulfill or replenish curls based on what it’s craving at the moment. “Curly hair tends to be on the dryer side due to the shape of the strands, so making sure your curls are properly moisturized is vital for healthy, bouncy curls.” A shampoo with protein can help strengthen and repair damaged curls. Additionally, “over time, ingredients, hard water, and pollution can build up on the hair creating a barrier that doesn’t allow ingredients to absorb,” says Lund, which is why a detoxing shampoo is also an essential product to have in your lineup.

Will shampoo make my curls frizzy?

    line break

We often think of shampoos as drying and stripping, therefore leading to more frizz. But there are plenty of hydrating cleansers on the market that both combat the fuzz and hydrate hair. “Frizz is best alleviated by the use of moisturizing products like shea butter, murumuru butter, and thicker oils like baobab seed oil. I also look for products with lotus extract as it acts as an emollient, leaving hair silky and soft,” says Lund.

  • Answering All Your Questions About Sterilization

Answering All Your Questions About Sterilization

    [ad_1]

Kristen Williams always knew she didn’t want to have children. Since 17, she’d experimented with different forms of birth control, including the pill and later, an IUD, but then decided she wanted something more permanent. “My mom had her tubes tied after she was done having children, and I’ve had other friends who have done the same, so I knew it was an option,” she says.

She was aware of sterilization but was concerned about broaching the topic with her gynecologist. “I had never asked about [the procedure] before, because I assumed my doctor would tell me no.” But after presenting her gyno with a “sterilization binder,” i.e. a collection of her research about the procedure, she had an appointment date set.

Last year, at age 23, Williams got sterilized—and documented the experience on TikTok. When the now 24-year-old started posting videos about her sterilization journey online, she was unprepared for the swath of positive comments. “I didn’t think anyone would see it,” Williams tells ELLE.com. “But when it blew up, everyone was so supportive. It was nice to see women supporting women doing whatever they want with their bodies.”

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion, sterilization has become a popular topic among young people. And although official statistics have not yet been made available, the Washington Post reported that anecdotally OB/GYNs across the country have seen a spike in patients inquiring about the procedure.

But because sterilization is a new concept for so many, the process comes with a lot of questions. Will you still have a period afterward? How much does it cost? Just how effective is it? Below, here’s everything you need to know.

    What is sterilization?

Sterilization—also referred to as tubal ligation (“getting your tubes tied”)—is a surgical procedure that prevents pregnancy. For the procedure, the fallopian tubes are blocked, cut, or a portion is removed. This keeps the sperm from reaching and fertilizing the egg. And because sterilization is an outpatient procedure, you typically won’t need to be hospitalized overnight.

In Williams’ case, she had the procedure done laparoscopically, which is minimally invasive and doesn’t require a large incision. “[My doctor] made three really tiny incisions and was able to go in without fully cutting me open,” she says. “It made for a significantly faster recovery time, and it was a lot easier on my body.”

For her, the process was seamless. “The actual surgery was really quick,” says Williams. “I think it took maybe 30-45 minutes. My doctor told me that I couldn’t do any heavy lifting over 25 pounds for about two weeks and that most patients need about two to six weeks to recover. But I got my surgery done on a Wednesday, and by that weekend, I was pretty much completely back to normal. I just had to be a little careful, because I had some stitches. But it was super easy.”

    How much does sterilization cost?

According to Planned Parenthood, tubal ligation can cost anywhere up to $6,000. But if you have insurance, most plans now cover sterilization under the Affordable Care Act since it’s a form of birth control. Williams says she only had to pay a $200 co-pay.

    Is the procedure reversible?

Generally, no. While surgery can potentially be performed to reconnect the tubes, this may not be successful, and it’s usually not covered by insurance.

Will you still have your period?

Yes. Your ovaries and hormones remain untouched. You also will not go into early menopause for the same reason.

    Just how effective is sterilization?

Sterilization is more than 99 percent effective.

    Design Leah Romero

Does sterilization protect you from STDs?

No, none of the sterilization methods prevent sexually transmitted infections.

Where should you go to get sterilized?

Your OB/GYN is preferred, and they’ll perform the procedure in their normal office, but if you don’t have access to one, a hospital or Planned Parenthood health center are solid alternatives.

Why might a doctor hesitate to perform the procedure?

According to Dr. Ghea Adeboyejo, an OB/GYN and chief of maternal-child medicine at HCA University Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, doctors may hesitate to sterilize people who are young. “I think other doctors may fear that the patient will have regrets later in life,” she says. “But it’s our job to help educate women so that they can make the best choices for their health.”

Williams says that one of her biggest fears was getting rejected by a doctor, but coming to her initial consult prepared with questions and information about the procedure made a huge difference. “Going in and knowing about the procedure and being able to tell them confidently about it makes a humongous difference,” she says. “And if you do find someone who tells you no, search for someone else, because there is someone who will allow you that bodily autonomy. It may be annoying to find them, but it has genuinely been the best decision I’ve ever made.”

    Can you still get pregnant?

Yes, but fewer than one out of 100 women will get pregnant within a year of surgery.

And remember, there are other options:

“Long-acting and reversible contraceptives like IUDs and birth control implants are just as effective and often easier to obtain,” Dr. Ghea says. “They may be lower in cost and offer the benefit of being easy to remove if a patient changes their mind or eventually wants to get pregnant.”

    Dr. Karan Lal, Dermatologist

What’s the different between a body cream, a lotion, body butter, etc?

    This is an image

“This is a must know!” says Dr. Lal. “Creams are a blend of oil and water, with equal parts of oil and water. After ointments they are the best form of moisturizers. Lotions are also a blend of water and oil but with disproportionately more water than oil. Body butters are made from raw fats such as shea butter, cocoa butter. They are not full of water and thus are great for people with dry, flaky skin that is void of oils. Any of the above can be moisturizers. Moisturizer is a broad term and just applies to a skincare product that provides hydration.”

A best-seller from dpHue’s popular ACV line, this pre-rinse scrub gently exfoliates to detoxify and invigorate the skin. “There are a lot of salt scrubs with larger granules that can actually scratch the surface of the scalp, which can in turn damage the follicle and cause it to die off,” Ruggeri explains. “The fine Himalayan salt granules in this product strike just the right balance to promote healthy skin and hair.” It also includes aloe vera for a cooling, soothing effect.

Amazon reviewers are saying: “This is honestly my favorite beauty product I have ever purchased. I used to have super greasy hair and I felt like I had tried everything to fix it but nothing worked. Until I discovered this. I only use it around once every week or two and I don’t have any problems with oil anymore. And my hair feels softer than it ever has. It also doesn’t take much to do a treatment and it feels so good and clean. I’m always going to use it now. I don’t even care about the smell because magic doesn’t come without a price.”

On warmer days, Martin suggests pairing a short bodysuit with a sweater or button-down, sneakers, and folded socks, adding that the top layers “can be tied around the neck or waist if it gets too hot.” During colder months, he advises a go-to look of leggings, a puffer jacket, and a statement beanie for a sleek yet playful winter outfit.

And with “tons of premium athleisure options available these days, it’s easy to achieve a polished look that’s work-appropriate,” Martin says. The key to nailing business-casual is creating visual interest with your outfit, he explains. • The Curly Girl Method for Beginners

The Curly Girl Method for Beginners

    [ad_1]

For those with curly hair, it’s no secret that caring for your strands can be difficult. Textures that vary from Z-pattern coils to S-pattern ringlets require a deep amount of attention, as they’re often delicate and prone to tangles. As someone who has a blend of type 3C and 4A curls, I’ve been on a long hair care journey to find the best methods—and the perfect combination of products—with enough power to nourish and define my curls. It’s been a twisty path, to say the least—pun fully intended.

One effective method I’ve found is the curly girl method (CGM), recognized widely across the community of folks with textured spirals as a true haircare game-changer. And because we’re not in the business of gatekeeping at ELLE.com, we’ve provided a thorough guide to the curly girl method and the most effective products to make your curly dreams come true.

We’ve also consulted celebrity hairdresser, educator, and founder of Vernon Francois Haircare, Vernon François, and artistic director of Balmain Hair Couture, Ilham Mestour. Below, both experts share their thoughts on the curly girl method, while bestowing tips and tricks to lead you through your quest for flawless curls.

What is the curly girl method?

In 2011, the founder of DevaChan Hair Salon and DevaCurl products, Lorriane Massey, published Curly Girl: The Handbook. This manifesto inspired those with curls to embrace their natural texture by implementing the “curly girl method” or CGM—a five-step process that helps you achieve your best curls over time. “The method is focused on avoiding ingredients that can be harsh on curly hair, such as sulfates and silicones, and instead using gentle, nourishing products that can help enhance curls,” says Mestour. “CGM also encourages people to avoid damaging styling practices like heat styling and brushing,” Mestour adds.

What are the five steps of the curly girl method?

    Reset

The first step of the curly girl method calls for a complete reset, or in other words, a deep cleanse using a clarifying shampoo of your choice. Clarifying shampoos help to break down residue from products like leave-in conditioners and gels that often wedge their way into the nooks and crannies of your scalp. However, this step comes with a caveat. “Clarifying shampoos often contain strong surfactants that can strip the hair of natural oils and cause dryness, so they are typically not recommended for frequent use,” says Mestour. “They are best used occasionally, perhaps once a month, to remove build-up and refresh the hair.” That said, it’s unnecessary to reset each time you wash your hair, only when there is a substantial amount of build-up.

    Cleanse

As for the second step, sulfates are now completely off-limits. Sulfates—mineral salts that strip impurities from hair and are often found in clarifying shampoos—can cause hair strands to become dry and brittle. So to replenish your hair with hydration, it’s essential to use a sulfate-free shampoo or a co-wash formulated specifically for gentle cleansing. “A co-wash or cleansing conditioner is a gentle, non-foaming formula designed to cleanse the hair without stripping it of its natural oils,” says Mestour. “Co-washes typically contain mild surfactants or cleansing agents, along with conditioning ingredients that help detangle and soften the hair.”

    Condition

Conditioner is a curly girl’s best friend, and I say this from experience. Now, with this step of the process, you must make sure to distribute the conditioner evenly. “You’ll know you’ve applied enough conditioner when all the hair is lightly coated with product,” says François. Another integral aspect of this step is detangling your hair while it’s slathered in conditioner.

    Style

In her book, Lorriane Massey recommends applying gel to soaking wet curls. The application process entails raking the gel through your curls using your fingers and scrunching the ends, as this technique helps to define curls. “When you scrunch your hair, you are using your hands to gather small sections of hair and squeeze them upwards towards your scalp,” says Mestour. “This helps to encourage your curls to form into their natural shape and definition.” Scrunching also helps to squeeze out excess water, which can lead to frizzy strands.

    Dry

The final step is drying your hair. Although the easiest thing to do might be to wrap a bath towel around your head, every curl specialist will tell you to avoid this at all costs. Instead, use a t-shirt to gently scrunch your hair, removing moisture, then let it air dry. If you truly can’t resist using a towel, opt for a microfiber towel, which is a non-abrasive alternative that prevents frizziness and damage.

Does the curly girl method actually work?

Although the curly girl method has been highly praised by the curly hair community, we need to acknowledge that every head of hair has its unique needs and might react differently to CGM. If you do some digging, you’ll find a mix of testimonies across the internet, featuring some who say that CGM saved their hair, while others claim that it either didn’t help at all or ruined their curls (causing less definition, scalp irritation, and even hair loss). However, it’s important to consider that these negative testimonies could be because of the products used during the process, not the process itself. So, when trying out CGM, invest in safe and effective products that have been thoroughly tested and reviewed.

What should you avoid while using the curly girl method?

If your goal is to see results, it’s time to kiss your hot tools goodbye. This means taking a break from flat irons, curling wands, blow dryers, and any other kind of tool that emits heat, as exposure to high temperatures can ultimately cause dryness, breakage, and curl manipulation. The only exception here is using a diffuser on low heat to dry your hair.

As for ingredients to avoid, the curly girl method claims that you should stay away from sulfates, silicones, and alcohol. Sulfates are mineral salts that help to strip oil and dirt from hair, but they’re seen as the enemy of curly hair due to their capacity to cause excessive dryness. Silicones are meant to coat hair strands with their rubber-like substance, but the issue here is that they can contribute to product build-up over time. Alcohol are often the source of scalp irritation and hair dryness, i.e. a curly girl’s worst nightmare.

However, François points out that there is some room for debate here. “Labeling ingredients as good or bad simplifies a complex area, when there are different kinds of alcohols, different kinds of silicones, and the overall blend of ingredients in any given formula is key.”

What is the most effective way to use conditioner while doing the curly girl method?

The biggest mistake that someone with curly hair can make is instantly rinsing out conditioner after applying it. Conditioner is a moisturizing agent that replenishes your hair with hydration and provides an ingredient-rich protective coating, so you should take time to let it soak into your hair strands. And most importantly, you should use conditioner during the detangling process. “When your hair is wet and saturated with conditioner, it becomes more pliable and easier to comb through, which can help to reduce the risk of hair breakage and damage,” says Mestour. “Be sure to pay extra attention to the ends of your hair, which tend to be more prone to dryness and damage,” she adds.

It’s also important to note that your hair strands are at their most fragile state while wet. François has a trick for detangling: “My go-to is gently detangling hair by hand when it’s dry, before shampooing and conditioning—great care should always be taken when detangling hair to avoid excessive pulling and breakage.” François also shares that the best way to detangle your hair while it’s slathered in conditioner is “by sectioning it first to reach all areas of your head more easily,” says François. “Start from the ends and work your way up towards the scalp, using downward strokes.”

So, how do you know if you’ve applied enough conditioner?

Well, the short answer is that the amount of conditioner varies per person, but Mestour recommends a general principle to follow: “Work the conditioner through your hair until you feel that each curl is well-coated, and with practice, you will develop a sense of how much conditioner your hair needs to look and feel its best.”

If you go a bit overboard while applying conditioner, it’s okay, but remember that adding more than necessary isn’t helpful. “Oversaturating the hair with excess conditioner won’t add any extra benefit because hair can only absorb so much,” says François.

Why is the use of gel important when it comes to styling?

“Gels provide hold and definition to your hair, helping to keep your curls in place and prevent frizz,” says Mestour. She notes that an entire spectrum of gels exists, ranging from light to strong-hold formulas, so your gel of choice should coincide with your hair texture and styling needs. Despite what the curly girl method might endorse, it’s not an absolute must. “It is your personal choice as to how important gel is for you, depending on the look you are hoping to achieve,” says François.

Can you use a leave-in conditioner as part of the curly girl method?

Absolutely! Although the official curly girl method doesn’t require the use of leave-in conditioners, some people like to use them as a step before gels, myself included. The curly girl method is simply a guide, and it’s encouraged to personalize the method to your hair care needs.

When I visited Candace Witherspoon Salon in Manhattan to receive a much-needed curly cut, my stylist showed me her version of achieving defined curls, which involved lightly coating my hair strands with a leave-in conditioner before adding gel to nourish my curls. “A quality leave-in conditioner is important because it helps to create a good foundation to work from before the styling process,” says François.

Due to their beneficial properties, leave-in conditioners are often considered a solid starting point in the styling process. “Many leave-in conditioners contain ingredients such as vitamins, antioxidants, and proteins that can help to protect your hair from damage,” says Mestour. She also mentions that leave-in conditioners are essential for those with tighter textures that are prone to dryness and frizz.

What additional ways can you define your curls during the styling process aside from scrunching?

Styling is often the most intricate part of the curly girl method because it requires a certain level of technique. “I bounce curls in an upward direction using a flat palm with fingers gently curving in to encourage the natural shape of curls, coils, kinks, spirals, or waves,” says François. “It helps if the hair is finger coiled with a little lightweight serum on freshly washed and conditioned hair that’s about eighty percent dry beforehand.”

Another practice I like implementing into my haircare routine is the “rake and shake” method. This tactic is not included in CGM, but I’ve found it a worthwhile alternative to scrunching. After sectioning my hair and applying my leave-in conditioner and gel, I focus on each section and rake my fingers through from my roots to my ends. When I reach the bottom of each section, I’ll lightly hold my ends and shake my wrist back and forth to help form the natural shape of my curls.

What are the benefits of air-drying versus diffusing?

Each drying method has its benefits, so it truly depends on what outcome you are trying to achieve and how much time you have. François uses the air-drying technique on his clients to achieve bounce and minimal frizz. “Finger coil or two-strand twist it first, then gently scrunch it every now and again while it’s drying to get a curl that is unmatched,” he explains.

If you don’t have much time to spare or simply don’t have the patience for air drying, then using a diffuser on low heat can accelerate the drying process. Mestour explains that other benefits of using a diffuser include enhancing curl definition and volume. “Using a diffuser lifts your curls and encourages them to dry with more body,” she notes.

As for my routine, I like to mix air-drying and diffusing, which François also suggests as an alternative to using one method versus the other. “Try leaving hair to air dry, then finishing it off with a diffuser, or start with a diffuser until hair is eighty or ninety percent dry, then leave it be,” François adds.

How should you style your hair at night to protect your curls?

When the day is done and your head is about to hit the pillow, how should you preserve the masterpiece you created? One option is the “pineapple method,” which you can do after your hair is completely dry. “Gather your hair loosely at the top of your head—as if you were going to make a ponytail, but don’t pull it all the way through—and secure it with a scrunchie or soft hair tie,” says Mestour. After perfecting the pineapple, you can wrap your hair with a silk scarf or bonnet for protection.

If you’d rather not have your hair in a pineapple, there are plenty of other ways to preserve your hair overnight. “Loosely braid or twist hair to help keep it tangle-free,“ François recommends, especially for those with longer hair. Those who aren’t a fan of wearing a bonnet or silk scarf, as they’re often infamous for slipping off in the middle of the night, then try a silk pillowcase. “An alternative to wearing a silk cap is to invest in a silk pillowcase to minimize friction and pulling as you move during sleep,” says François.

If you wake up the next morning and decide that your hair needs a bit of a touch-up, Mestour suggests rejuvenating your curls with a few simple tricks: “Refresh your curls by spritzing them with water or a leave-in conditioner, then scrunch them gently to revive their shape.”

Overall, what should you keep in mind when beginning the curly girl method?

“The Curly Girl Method can be an effective approach to caring for curly hair, but it may take some experimentation and adjustment to find the right products and techniques for your hair type and texture,” says Mestour. Think of CGM as a science experiment, and continue to test different combinations of ingredients and techniques until you find the perfect fit for your curls. Discovering the best approach for your curls can be daunting, and sometimes discouraging, but it’s important to have patience with yourself because, as François says, “getting to know your own head of hair can be fun.”
