Half a house for half a million? Monrovia listing creates buzz at $500k bargain

A unique listing in Monrovia has the public buzzing at what many Southern Californians may consider a bargain with the below-market asking price. However, it comes with a catch.

The property located at 113 South Mountain Ave. is listed at a modest $500,000 – a price many would consider desirable in the Southland. It comes at a bargain since it’s the remnants of a house that was heavily damaged by a toppled tree earlier this summer.

Fortunately, the previous owners of the home were unharmed when the pine tree crashed on their abode. The owner has since decided to sell the 2,000-square-foot property. Describing it as an “open concept house” on the market, real estate agent Kevin Wheeler is overseeing the sale of the home.

“The best of indoor-outdoor living,” he said.

With a heavily damaged roof, a toppled chimney and about half of the home missing, the property on Mountain Avenue certainly stands out against other listings.

“I definitely am winning the contest of ugliest duckling in my brokerage with this home,” Wheeler said.

Despite the home being red-tagged, Wheeler said he’s received a healthy amount of interest in the listing.

“I’ve had an astronomical number of calls on this property,” he said.

Wheeler added that the home would likely be torn down by its next owner. However, he added that the next buyer should do their due diligence in having a clear understanding of the permitting required to make the space livable.

  • Half a house, half a million: A tree-crushed home hits the market in Monrovia

Half a house, half a million: A tree-crushed home hits the market in Monrovia

A few months after being toppled by a towering pine tree, a Monrovia home — or what’s left of it — is up for grabs for $499,999.

The humble bungalow made headlines when it was crushed by a tree in May with two renters and two dogs inside. None were injured, but the tree took out their car, a fence and most of the roof.

What’s left of the property looks like a postapocalyptic set piece complete with missing walls, loose wires and no ceilings. Some would call it unsalvageable; listing agent Kevin Wheeler quipped that it’s an “open-concept floor plan.”

According to the listing, the home holds one bedroom and one bathroom in 645 square feet, but those are based on measurements taken before it was destroyed. Wheeler said the electricity is turned off, but the plumbing still works.

The back door, which the renters escaped through after the tree came down, still stands.

Monrovia rules state that demolitions on properties more than 50 years old require a review. But since the house was destroyed by an act of God, a review isn’t required, according to Wheeler. So house-hunters can buy what’s left of the home and fix it up without dealing with some of the red tape typically required during rebuilds.

“There’s been a lot of interest so far because demand is so high and inventory, especially at this price, is so low,” Wheeler said.

He added that multiple people tracked down the homeowner with low-ball offers to buy the home days after it was crushed.

“They were trying to buy it for $250,000 or $300,000,” he said. “But market comparisons for similar properties in Monrovia put the value at $500,000.”

  • Bear nicknamed ‘Oreo’ causes trouble for Monrovia neighborhood

Bear nicknamed ‘Oreo’ causes trouble for Monrovia neighborhood

A mischievous bear has been causing trouble in one particular Monrovia neighborhood and it’s become so infamous that it’s been nicknamed after the treat it was spotted rummaging for.

Community members on North Canyon Crest Drive have been keeping an eye out for “Oreo” the bear, who was seen breaking into a home and was even caught inside a car all in search of his namesake.

Video captured by one neighbor showed the critter raid a resident’s car after it was full of groceries. The bear is then seen walking away but then returning for a bag of Oreo cookies that fell a few feet away.

“Lately, he’s been too comfortable with us,” said Vine Khoury, who lives in the area. “He got to open a neighbor’s car and got the groceries out. Got a box of Oreos and that’s where his name came from.”

Khoury has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and said it isn’t uncommon to spot wildlife in the area. She said this one in particular, however, is smarter than the average bear.

“One of the neighbors was walking her dog and saw the window broken screen down and the window was open,” Khoury recalled. “She called police thinking someone got in. Another neighbor found video of the bear breaking in.”

Last summer, this same bear found its way into Khoury’s garage and satisfied its sweet tooth. The wild animal was captured on camera helping itself to the refrigerator and taking out a box that contained a chocolate cake.

“We are OK with them around, it’s just this one that got too comfortable opening screens and getting inside the house and pushing windows,” she said.

To prevent bears, or any wildlife in general, from getting into humans’ spaces, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends locking garbage cans and keeping yards clear of overgrown plants. It also recommends keeping a watchful eye on your precious pets for their safety.

Meanwhile, neighbors on North Canyon Crest Drive said they are keeping their eye out for Oreo and its behavior.

“I don’t want them to hurt or kill the bear,” Khoury said. “I would hate that, but at the same time, maybe relocate him.”

Neighbors said Oreo has not shown any signs of aggression, just cravings. Due to its lack of aggression, they have not made any official reports to wildlife officials. Residents said that may change if the bear continues getting too comfortable around humans.

  • Monrovia woman shoots man armed with knives who had restraining order against him, authorities say

Monrovia woman shoots man armed with knives who had restraining order against him, authorities say

A Monrovia woman shot and killed a man who violated a restraining order and showed up armed with knives at her home, authorities said Sunday.

The shooting was reported at about 9 p.m. Friday in the San Gabriel Valley community after the man arrived at the home, apparently intent on attacking the woman, the LA County Sheriff’s Department said. Another man was inside the home at the time.

An investigation is underway after a person was found shot to death in Monrovia. As seen on air on May 18, 2024.

The woman phoned dispatchers to report that a man with a restraining order against him was at the home armed with knives. The man with a gunshot wound was dead when law enforcement officers arrived.

“(The man) went to the residence armed with knives, attempted to stab the white female adult and white male adult, and to stop the threat the white female adult discharged a firearm,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement. “ The female adult and male adult provided voluntary statements and were not arrested.”

A firearm and several knives allegedly were recovered at the scene.

Details about the restraining order were not immediately available.

The case was turned over to the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau for investigation.

    Simple Front Porch Container Design

As the new year begins, your front porch needs to be welcoming with full of color and balance.  During the winter months, our front porch containers were planted with Red Dogwood branches and custom glass reed art, but now Spring has arrived, and we need a new beginning.

With help from my wife, we traveled to Lowes and walked the aisles and found three Monrovia plants we felt would bring color to the front door containers this spring.

The theme was to keep it ‘Simple but Colorful’.

The three Monrovia plants we selected:

    • Royal Gerbera Daisy – Gerbera jamesonii Royal Series
    • Lobelia  – Lobelia Magadi Compact Blue
    • Prairie Fire Sedge – Carex testacea ‘Indian Summer’
