EXCLUSIVE: Huma Qureshi reveals when she fell in love with acting: ‘For the longest time I wrestled with it’

Huma Qureshi, who made her film debut with a supporting role in Gangs Of Wasseypur, has come a long way in her career. In her acting career of 10 years, she has been a part of many movies such as Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, Ek Thi Daayan, Dedh Ishqiya, Jolly LLB 2, Double XL, and her latest movie Monica, O My Darling. In a recent conversation with Pinkvilla, the actress revealed when she fell in love with acting, and what fascinated her about it. She also shared that her family always thought she would do something more academically inclined as she was always good at studies.

Huma Qureshi on how she found her love for acting

While speaking with Pinkvilla, Huma Qureshi said that she was one of those ‘classically confused’ kids who didn’t know what they wanted to do in their lives. “My family always thought that I would do something more academically inclined, because I was the smartest child they had. But I completely let them down clearly (chuckles). But you know I was head girl, I was always debating, in so many extra-curricular activities, and always good in studies. But I knew that I did not want to do that,” said Huma.  She said that she was into a lot of extra-curriculars at college, and theatre was one of them.

She recalled the time when they were doing a play, but didn’t have boys to perform with them since it was an all-girl college. “So we had to come up with a smarter idea on how to not use guys without people realizing. So we did this play called ‘Women of Mahabharata’, and all of us actually worked and created Kunti, Gandhari, Bhagwati- all these characters. We all had monologues, we called them Mahabharata monologues. So I performed that and directed that, and I remember when that happened we started winning all these college awards and started traveling,” she said.

Huma Qureshi on wrestling with the idea of following a career in acting

She said that the applause and appreciation for her work is what fascinated her. She also, “So I think that ‘chaska’ of appreciation that what you’re doing is good and people like it. Woh ‘applause ki aadat’ is what fascinated me.”

Huma also shared that for a long time, she ‘wrestled’ with the idea of following a career in acting as she came from a simple background. “For the longest time I also wrestled with it because I come from a very simple home, so I feel like to tell my parents or my friends even that I want to go to Bombay and be a movie actress, they’ll be like “What rubbish is this? Who do you know in Bombay?” But yeah I think it planted the seed and here I am”, said Huma.

  • Radhika Apte opens up on losing roles to ‘younger actresses’: ‘It is a fact’

Radhika Apte opens up on losing roles to ‘younger actresses’: ‘It is a fact’

Radhika Apte is one of the most talented actors in Bollywood. She is nowadays busy promoting her film Monica, O My Darling which is airing on Netflix nowadays. This film stars Apte in the lead role alongside actors Rajkummar Rao, and Huma Qureshi. During the ongoing promotions of the film, Apte opened up on losing commercial films to younger actors and added how she feels about the same.

Radhika Apte and her take on ageism

Before we deep dive into what exactly she said, let us recall what Apte had said earlier this year that had grabbed headlines. Earlier in 2022, Radhika told Hindustan Times, “What I’m really struggling with is (people unable) to combat age, especially in the industry with people going through surgeries. I know so many of my colleagues who have gone through so many surgeries to change their faces and bodies.”

Referring to this statement, Radhika was recently asked about facing rejection because the other actors get valued more to which she told interviewer Siddharth Kannan, “There’s truth to this, but it becomes sensationalized and it changes its tonality. Age is a factor and you cannot deny the fact that people want younger actresses in bigger commercial films; it’s just a fact, a younger or conventional image that they want. There have been days where you are told that ‘yeah you don’t have xyz’ and we need xyz. You can see the number of surgeries people do. There is an image that we are chasing and not just in India, across the globe, which a lot of women are fighting against it.”

Radhika Apte and her take on brand promotions and more

In a hope that things get better with time, the actor said, “Brands are promoting men and women of all ages, sizes and it’s happening. But, there was a time when I did struggle with that and I know a lot of people who do, that is a fact. It’s upto you, people succumb to it and they start getting things done to themselves. It’s a very vulnerable position,” added Radhika and said it has never put her in the same spot.”

Monica, O My Darling is a crime comedy thriller film directed by Vasan Bala and was released on Netflix on November 11 this year.
