The Philippines is famous for its spectacular sunsets and vibrant nightlife. It offers dramatic limestone cliffs and crystal clear waters. This place features a vast array of beachfront resorts catering to the needs of different travellers. Popular accommodations here include Shangri-La Boracay and Coast Boracay.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Beachfront Resort in Asia

To choose the perfect beachfront resort in Asia, you must consider the following factors:

    Luxury vs. Value

Destinations like the Maldives and private islands in the Philippines lean toward the luxury end, while countries like Thailand and Vietnam offer some budget-friendly options. You must first consider your budget and then look for resorts that come within your financial limit.

    Activities

Research what activities are available in the resort. If you love water sports, consider resorts that cater to divers and snorkelers. On the other hand, if your preference is relaxation, go with the options offering a quiet atmosphere.

From nonprofits to credit unions, organizations across the country are stepping up to help military families and federal workers as the government shutdown continues. Many are reporting an alarming surge in demand.Since the shutdown, military spouse Alicia Blevins has faced a mountain of stress. Her family’s savings are depleted, stress-related health issues are emerging, and her job search has been put on hold 16 days into the shutdown. “It’s the stress that’s really gotten to us,” Blevins said. “Right now, I’ve got my resume out to every customer service job, entry level or not. I’ve got it out everywhere.”The desperation is being felt at nonprofits like the Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN). This week, the organization launched its emergency grocery support program in response to the shutdown, noting that more than 6,000 verified military families applied for its 1,600 grocery packages in the first 24 hours alone.”This moment really puts families at a very fragile place,” MFAN’s Chief Advancement Officer Kara Pappas said. “The need has so quickly eclipsed the demand that we need support from Americans.”Financial institutions are also escalating aid to military members and federal workers who qualify. • MrBeast Might Launch a Financial Services App. Is the World’s Biggest YouTuber Diversifying?

    [ad_1]

Would you spend 100 days locked in a windowless room to get relief on your student loans?

It’s the kind of extreme endurance challenge that MrBeast—also known as Jimmy Donaldson, currently the most popular YouTuber in the world—has built a social media empire around. But the world in which it’s also a serious route to debt relief may be inching closer, following reports that the web content impresario could be gearing up to launch a financial services app called MrBeast Financial.

To be clear, it’s unlikely that MrBeast Financial would incorporate the same type of reality-show-on-steroids gimmickery that has made the MrBeast YouTube channel a hit. Indeed, we know very little about what the personal finance app would look like, period—or whether it will even happen.

But a trademark application for MrBeast Financial that, according to data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, was filed on October 13 under Beast Holdings—an umbrella company owned by the eponymous YouTuber—indicates that the name could be used for a mobile app that might do anything from banking services to short-term cash advances to crypto trading.

Also on that list are investment banking and management services; microfinance lending; insurance; financial advice; financial planning; and financial education. The trademark application makes additional reference to issuing credit and debit cards, as well as the “provision and financial administration of a debit card savings program.”

It’s not clear whether any eventual app would offer all of those services or just a subset of them. A spokesperson for Donaldson declined to comment, and the legal team cited in the trademark application did not respond to a request for details.

In addition to the trademark application, which is public, Business Insider reported in March that it had reviewed a pitch deck indicating that Donaldson had plans to get into financial services. The proposed service was at the time called a slightly different name—“Beast Financial”—but included a similar bevy of services, including student loans, insurance, credit cards, banking services, and financial literacy support.

The pitch deck indicated that MrBeast’s team had “engaged with leading fintech companies to white label their products,” Business Insider reported, “while avoiding regulatory, credit risk, and capital requirements.”

A parallel pitch had to do with creating a new platform for web content creators.

Financial services are a tightly regulated industry, especially compared to the wild west that is online content creation. But legal complexities aside, it wouldn’t be an entirely out-of-left-field move by Donaldson, whose videos tend to be built around eye-popping cash prizes (an exemplary title: “Survive 100 Days in Prison, Win $500,000”) and who’s already stretched his brand across various other verticals, including Feastables chocolate bars, Lunchly packaged meals, and the MrBeast Burger fast food concept.

Business Insider reported last month that the YouTube titan is also thinking about launching a mobile-phone service, seemingly in the same vein as the Ryan Reynolds-backed Mint Mobile—although a source close to the company said that there’s no specific timeline for the telecom project, and that it isn’t a top priority.

  • Fili TV: The Best App to Watch TV Online in Philippines

    [ad_1]

In an age where digital content rules, the way Filipinos consume television has fundamentally changed. Gone are the days of being tethered to scheduled broadcasts. Today, with a dynamic app ecosystem, your favorite teleseryes, news, and movies are right in your pocket. Among the contenders for the title of the best online TV platform in the Philippines, one name is rapidly gaining recognition: Fili TV. This comprehensive streaming application promises to be the essential link between Filipinos and the content they love, offering a unique blend of convenience, vast content, and affordability.

The Digital Revolution of Filipino Television

The Philippines has embraced the streaming revolution with fervor. For a population known for its deep connection to local drama, news, and culture, having instant access to Filipino television anywhere, anytime is more than a luxury—it’s a necessity. This is especially true for the growing population of Filipinos living and working abroad, who seek to maintain a connection to home.

The challenge for many viewers is balancing access to live channels with on-demand content, all while juggling multiple subscriptions. Fili TV steps into this space by aiming to consolidate a wide variety of Filipino and international entertainment into a single, user-friendly platform. It’s designed to be the definitive digital hub for Pinoy entertainment, making it incredibly easy to choose the Fili TV app to download and enjoy your favorite Filipino programs.

A Vast Library of Pinoy Content

What truly sets a streaming app apart is its content library, and Fili TV is dedicated to providing an extensive array of shows, movies, and live channels.

    Live TV Channels

The core of the Fili TV experience is access to live television. Imagine watching the primetime news or a major sporting event in real-time, just as you would on a traditional TV set, but with the freedom of your mobile device.

    On-Demand Teleseryes and Movies

Catch up on missed episodes or binge-watch classic and new teleseryes at your own pace. The on-demand section is regularly updated, ensuring you never fall behind on the latest plot twists and dramatic developments.

    International Channels

For a more diverse viewing experience, Fili TV often includes a selection of international channels, catering to a broader audience base with interests beyond local programming, such as popular sports and movie networks.

This curated and vast library ensures that every member of the family finds something to watch, solidifying Fili TV’s position as a powerhouse of Filipino digital entertainment.

User Experience: Simple, Seamless, and Multi-Device

A great streaming service needs to be more than just content; it requires a superior user interface and cross-platform compatibility. Fili TV focuses on a user-centric design to ensure a smooth, enjoyable viewing journey.

The app’s interface is intuitive, making navigation and content discovery effortless, even for non-tech-savvy users. Features like personalized recommendations, simple search functions, and the ability to resume watching from where you left off are essential for a modern streaming platform, and Fili TV incorporates these seamlessly.

Crucially, the app’s cross-platform availability is a major advantage. Whether you prefer watching on your smartphone during your commute, on a tablet in bed, or casting to your smart TV for a full-screen experience, Fili TV is designed to work across multiple devices. This flexibility means that your entertainment travels with you, adapting to your lifestyle rather than the other way around.

Pricing and Accessibility: Affordable Entertainment for Every Juan

In the Philippines, value for money is paramount. Fili TV has positioned itself as an affordable alternative to costly cable subscriptions and fragmented streaming services. By offering a range of subscription plans, often structured around monthly, quarterly, or even annual access codes, the platform provides flexibility for different budgets and viewing habits.

While exact pricing can vary, the model is designed to be highly accessible, ensuring that top-tier Filipino entertainment is not restricted by high costs. This focus on affordability democratizes access to media, allowing a broader segment of the population, including students and budget-conscious households, to enjoy quality online television.

Downloading and Getting Started with Fili TV

Getting started with Fili TV is typically a straightforward process:

    • Download the App: Use the direct download links on their website or ones provided by authorized resellers.
    • Registration and Subscription: Sign up for an account and choose the subscription plan that best suits your needs. Subscriptions are often purchased through authorized dealers who provide a unique “recharge code.”
    • Start Streaming: Enter your code, log in, and you are ready to explore the extensive catalog and live channels.

For Filipinos seeking a reliable, content-rich, and budget-friendly way to watch TV online, Fili TV is a compelling choice. It’s more than just an app; it’s a dedicated portal to Filipino culture and entertainment, right at your fingertips.

This city on the ocean offers a wonderfully romantic atmosphere that will make your wedding celebration memorable for years to come and fill you with emotions that will stay with you throughout your marriage. However, not all of them prefer large-scale, traditional weddings; many couples in Los Angeles are looking for a simpler and more intimate way to hold such a ceremony. For them, a civil wedding ceremony in Los Angeles at the Lucky Wedding Day wedding chapel is the perfect option, offering the opportunity to easily and effortlessly formalize your marriage in accordance with United States law and receive your marriage certificate shortly thereafter.

For most couples who want to avoid the stress and complications associated with the wedding planning process, a civil marriage ceremony is the ideal option, as it allows them to express their feelings and formalize their relationship legally without wasting time or experiencing stress while preparing for the event.

Civil marriage ceremony in Los Angeles

In other words, a civil wedding in Los Angeles begins with gathering the necessary documents. The ultimate goal is to obtain a marriage license, which is required to register the marriage. Couples from other countries can obtain it without any problems, as long as they have identification documents such as a passport and fill out the necessary forms at Lucky Wedding Day Chapel. Once you submit your application, you will be assigned a date and time for your civil wedding ceremony. If you have any requests or wishes, or need additional services such as a photographer or musical accompaniment, you can discuss all of this with Lucky Wedding Day at this stage.

The civil ceremony process is minimalist, which is perfect for most couples who don’t want to bother with organizing a lavish traditional wedding ceremony that requires a lot of time and effort. There is no need for long speeches or a special script. All attention should be on the two people. The atmosphere of the Lucky Wedding Day wedding chapel allows you to focus on the most important things: your partner and the legal aspects. This way, you can legally formalize your marriage in Los Angeles, avoiding the additional complications of organizing a large-scale event with many guests. Give yourself this day as a gift and choose a civil wedding ceremony in Los Angeles at Lucky Wedding Day.

  • Seattle city council approves public safety sales tax increase

    [ad_1]

Buying anything next year will cost you more in Seattle. The Seattle City Council approved a 0.1% public safety sales tax on Tuesday.

The bill passed with all councilmembers voting in favor of it, but one. The sales tax increase stems from a new state law that was passed during the 2025 legislative session.

Seattle City Council President Sara Nelson told FOX 13 Seattle that the intention is to use it for costs associated with public safety, which could include treatment of substance abuse disorders, homelessness, and staffing first responders.

    By the numbers:

Projections show the city could bring in almost $40 million in 2026 from that increase, but some have pointed out how high Seattle’s sale tax already is and the impact it will have on low-income residents.

Here’s how Seattle’s 10.35% compares to other major cities across the country:

    • New York City: 8.88%
    • Boston: 6.25%
    • Chicago: 10.25%
    • San Francisco: 8.63%

    What they’re saying:

FOX 13 Seattle asked Nelson what she would say to folks who say Seattle’s sales tax is already too high.

“Increasing an already regressive tax is not my first choice it’s probably the last choice, but we have such gaping holes in our response to the fentanyl epidemic and to the need for treatment this year and I believe it’s worth it. This is not about taxing working families, this is about ending the cycle of homelessness, of overdoses, of violence associated with the drug trade,” Sara Nelson, City Council President said.

She went on to say, she believes this increase is worth the cost and will save lives.

Nelson adds Tuesday’s vote was to authorize this new increase in the sales tax. How that money is spent is up to the council during the budget deliberations.

  • Report: Mass. cities, towns face ‘historic’ fiscal crisis

    [ad_1]

BOSTON — Massachusetts cities and towns are facing a “historic fiscal crisis” amid rising operating costs, lackluster state aid and restraints on property tax increases, according to a new report.

The “Perfect Storm” report, released by the Massachusetts Municipal Association, found that while state government spending has increased by an average of 2.8% per year since 2010 to meet its needs, restraints on local revenue sources – including Proposition 2 1⁄2 – have held city and town spending to just 0.6% per year.

  • Dollar Steadies as Markets Focus on US-China Trade Tensions, Politics

    [ad_1]

The U.S. dollar recovered from a selloff in early trade on Monday as investors hoped Washington may temper its latest escalation of the trade war with Beijing, while political developments in France and Japan undermined the euro and the yen.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, edged higher to 99.002, retracing some losses sustained after U.S. President Trump announced 100 percent tariffs on China.

That revived fears of Trump’s Liberation Day rollout of sweeping tariffs in April, sparking a selloff in stocks and cryptocurrencies on Friday. “Certainly it’s pretty nervous out there,” said Tim Kelleher, head of institutional FX Sales at Commonwealth Bank in Auckland.

“If you look at the U.S. and China stuff, it looks like Trump has done a bit of a TACO again and softened his tone,” he added, referring to a trading rule of thumb that “Trump always chickens out.”

Earlier in the day, Trump said: “Don’t worry about China, it will all be fine! Highly respected President Xi just had a bad moment,” he posted on the Truth Social network. “He doesn’t want Depression for his country, and neither do I. The U.S.A. wants to help China, not hurt it!!!”

Market liquidity may be affected by holidays as the U.S. observes Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day today, while Japan is also closed to mark Health and Sports Day.

Against the yen, the dollar fetched 151.985 yen, up 0.5 percent as markets assessed the path ahead for new Liberal Democratic Party leader Sanae Takaichi after Komeito quit the ruling coalition on Friday, dealing a blow to her hopes to become the first female prime minister of the world’s fourth largest economy.

The euro stood at $1.1609, down 0.1 percent, after the French presidency announced Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu’s new cabinet line-up on Sunday, reappointing Roland Lescure, a close ally of Emmanuel Macron, as finance minister.

Cryptocurrency markets fluctuated between gains and losses after a sharp selloff on Friday, with bitcoin last trading up 0.4 percent at $115,486.04. Gold hit a fresh record of $4,059.30 and was last up 0.8 percent.

The offshore yuan traded at 7.137 yuan per dollar, tacking on 0.1 percent in early Asian trade. The Australian dollar fetched $0.6513, rising 0.6 percent in early trade, while the kiwi traded at $0.57345, up 0.3 percent. Sterling changed hands at $1.33415, up 0.1 percent so far on the day.

  • China Vows to Stand Firm Against Trump’s 100 Percent Tariff Threat

    [ad_1]

China signaled Sunday that it would not back down in the face of a 100 percent tariff threat from President Donald Trump, urging the U.S. to resolve differences through negotiations instead of threats. U.S. Vice President JD Vance defended Trump’s position and seemed to warn China not to be aggressive in its response.

“China’s stance is consistent,” the Commerce Ministry said in a statement posted online. “We do not want a tariff war but we are not afraid of one.”

It was China’s first official comment on Trump’s threat to jack up the tax on imports from China by Nov. 1 in response to new Chinese restrictions on the export of rare earths, which are vital to a wide range of consumer and military products.

The back and forth threatens to derail a possible meeting between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping and end a truce in a trade war in which new tariffs from both sides briefly topped 100 percent in April.

In response, Vance said Sunday that Trump is committed to protecting America’s economic livelihoods while making the United States more self-sufficient. He said the fact that China has “so much control over critical supply in the United States of America” is the definition of a national emergency and therefore justifies Trump’s move to impose tough tariffs.

“It’s going to be delicate dance and a lot of it is going to depend on how the Chinese respond. If they respond in a highly aggressive manner, I guarantee you the president of the United States has far more cards than the People’s Republic of China,” Vance said on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”

“If, however, they’re willing to be reasonable, then Donald Trump is always willing to be a reasonable negotiator. We’re going to find out a lot in the weeks to come about whether China wants to start a trade war with us or whether they actually want to be reasonable,” Vance continued. “I hope they choose the path of reason. The president of the United States is going to defend America regardless.”

Trump has raised taxes on imports from many U.S. trading partners since taking office in January, seeking to win concessions. China has been one of the few countries that hasn’t backed down, relying on its economic clout.

“Frequently resorting to the threat of high tariffs is not the correct way to get along with China,” the Commerce Ministry said in its post, which was presented as a series of answers from an unnamed spokesperson to four questions from unspecified media outlets.

The statement called for addressing any concerns through dialogue.

“If the U.S. side obstinately insists on its practice, China will be sure to resolutely take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” the post said.

In addition to the 100 percent tariff, Trump threatened to impose export controls on what he called “critical software,” without specifying what that means.

Both sides accuse the other of violating the spirit of the truce by imposing new restrictions on trade.

Trump said in a social media post that China is “becoming very hostile” and that it is holding the world captive by restricting access to rare earth metals and magnets.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry post said the U.S. has introduced several new restrictions in recent weeks, including expanding the number of Chinese companies subject to U.S. export controls.

On rare earths, the ministry said that export licenses would be granted for legitimate civilian uses, noting that the minerals also have military applications.

The new regulations include a requirement that foreign companies get Chinese government approval to export items that contain rare earths sourced from China, no matter where the products are manufactured.

China accounts for nearly 70 percent of the world’s rare earths mining and controls roughly 90 percent of their global processing. Access to the material is a key point of contention in trade talks between Washington and Beijing.

The critical minerals go into many products, from jet engines, radar systems and electric vehicles to consumer electronics including laptops and phones. China’s export controls have hit European and other manufacturers, as well as American ones.

The Commerce Ministry statement said that the U.S. is also ignoring Chinese concerns by going forward with new port fees on Chinese ships that take effect Tuesday. China announced Friday that it would impose port fees on American ships in response.

  • Trump Says Inflation is ‘Defeated’ and the Fed has Cut Rates, Yet Prices Remain Too High for Many

    [ad_1]

Inflation has risen in three of the last four months and is slightly higher than it was a year ago, when it helped sink then-Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. Yet you wouldn’t know it from listening to President Donald Trump or even some of the inflation fighters at the Federal Reserve.

Trump told the United Nations General Assembly late last month: “Grocery prices are down, mortgage rates are down, and inflation has been defeated.”

And at a high-profile speech in August, just before the Fed cut its key interest rate for the first time this year, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said: “Inflation, though still somewhat elevated, has come down a great deal from its post-pandemic highs. Upside risks to inflation have diminished.”

Yet dismissing or even downplaying inflation while it is still above the Fed’s target of 2 percent poses big risks for the White House and the Federal Reserve. For the Trump administration, it could find itself on the wrong side of a potent issue: Surveys show that many Americans still see high prices as a major burden on their finances.

The Fed may be taking an even bigger gamble: It has cut its key interest rate on the assumption that the Trump administration’s tariffs will only cause a temporary bump up in inflation. If that turns out to be wrong — if inflation gets worse or remains elevated for longer than expected — the Fed’s inflation-fighting credibility could take a hit.

That credibility plays a crucial role in the Fed’s ability to keep prices stable. If Americans are confident that the central bank can keep inflation in check, they won’t take steps — such as demanding sharply higher pay when prices rise — that can launch an inflationary spiral. Companies often increase prices further to offset higher labor costs.

But Karen Dynan, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said this week that with memories of pandemic-era inflation still fresh and tariffs pushing up the cost of imported goods, consumers and businesses could start to lose confidence that inflation will stay low.

“If that proves to be the case, in hindsight it will be that the Fed cuts — and I do expect several more — are going to be seen as a mistake,” Dynan said.

So far, the Trump administration’s tariffs haven’t lifted inflation as much as as many economists expected earlier this year. And it remains far below its 9.1 percent peak three years ago. Still, consumer prices increased 2.9 percent in August from a year earlier, up from 2.6 percent at the same time last year and above the Fed’s 2 percent target.

The government is scheduled to release the September inflation report on Wednesday, but the data will probably be delayed by the government shutdown.

Tariffs have pushed up the cost of many imported items, including furniture, appliances, and toys. Overall, the cost of long-lasting manufactured goods rose nearly 2 percent in August from a year earlier. It was a modest gain, but comes after nearly three decades when the cost of such items mostly fell.

The cost of some everyday goods are still rising more quickly than before the pandemic: Grocery prices moved up 2.7 percent in August from a year ago, the largest gain, outside the pandemic, since 2015. Coffee prices have soared nearly 21 percent in the past year, partly because Trump has slapped 50 percent import taxes on Brazil, a leading coffee exporter, and also because climate change-induced droughts have cut into coffee bean harvests.

Most Fed officials are still concerned that inflation is too high, according the minutes of its Sept. 16-17 meeting. Yet they still chose to cut their key interest rate, because they were more worried about the risk of worsening unemployment than about higher inflation.

But the concern for some economists is that the ongoing rollout of tariffs and the fact that many companies are still implementing price hikes in response could result in more than just a temporary boost to inflation.

“It is a big gamble after what we’ve been going through … to count on it being transitory,” said Jason Furman, an economist at Harvard University and a former top adviser to President Barack Obama. “Once upon a time, (3 percent inflation) would have been considered really high.”

Just two weeks ago, Trump slapped new tariffs on a range of products, including 100 percent on pharmaceuticals, 50 percent on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, and 25 percent on heavy trucks. On Friday, he threatened “a massive increase of tariffs” on imports from China in response to that country’s restrictions on rare earth exports.

Some companies are still raising prices to offset the tariff costs. Duties on steel and aluminum imports have pushed up the cost of the cans used by Campbell Soups, leading the company’s CEO to say in September that it will implement “surgical pricing initiatives.”

Chris Butler, CEO of National Tree Company, the nation’s largest artificial Christmas tree seller, says his company will raise prices by about 10 percent this holiday season on its trees, wreaths, and garlands to offset tariff costs. About 45 percent of its trees are made in China, with the rest from Southeast Asia, Mexico, and other countries. The cost of labor and real estate is too high to make them in the United States, he said.

Butler also expects there will be a reduced supply of artificial trees and decorations this year, which could lift industry-wide prices further, because most production in China shut down when tariffs on that country hit 145 percent earlier this year. Production resumed after Trump reduced the duties to 30 percent but at a slower pace.

Butler has pushed his suppliers to absorb some of the cost of the tariffs, but they won’t pay all of it.

“At the end of the day, we can’t absorb the entirety of it and our factories can’t absorb the entirety of it,” he said. “So we’ve had to pass along some of the increases to consumers.”

Many Fed policymakers are aware of the risks. Jeffrey Schmid, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, who votes on interest rate decisions, said Monday that high inflation that results from a loss of confidence in the central bank is harder to fight than other price spikes, such as those that result from supply disruptions.

“The Fed must maintain its credibility on inflation,” Schmid said. “History has shown that while all inflations are universally disliked, not all inflations are equally costly to fight.”

Yet some Fed officials say that other trends are offsetting the impact of tariffs. Fed governor Stephen Miran, whom Trump appointed just before the central bank’s September meeting, said Tuesday that a steady slowdown in rental costs should reduce underlying inflation in the coming months. And the sharp drop in immigration as a result of the administration’s clampdown will reduce demand, he said, cooling inflation pressures.

“I’m more sanguine about the inflation outlook than a lot of other people are,” he said.

  • Minnesota woman accused of using her position to steal thousands from a charitable foundation

    [ad_1]

A treasurer of a non-profit in Isanti County, Minnesota is accused of using her position to steal nearly $100,000.

The 61-year-old woman was a board member of the Isanti County Sheriff’s Foundation and now faces theft charges, including theft by swindle.

Court documents say other board members of the Sheriff’s Foundation were not aware she opened bank accounts and deposited grant money. That grant money totaled $100,000 and was meant to fund Project 612, a program supporting at risk youth in the Twin Cities.

“Honestly, I didn’t believe it at first I was like there’s no way that she would do this because I trusted her so much,” said Marshaan Johnson, the founder of Project 612.

Johnson says Project 612 was not a non-profit and needed a 501c3 organization to steward a grant meant to support programing for kids for a full year.

“I reached out to a friend and was like ‘hey this is what’s going on,’ I was like ‘I have this grant, but I need someone to steward the money for me because I don’t have a 501c3’ she was like ‘my mother does I could talk to her,’” Johnson explained.

His friend’s mother was the treasurer of the Isanti County Sheriff’s Foundation. Johnson says for a few months this year, he received the money he expected and programming for the kids was underway.

“Then things got a little wonky a check bounced for me, a check bounced for my partner and then questions started floating,” Johnson said.

Court documents show a Chisago County investigator found checks from the Sheriff’s Foundation account were written out personally ‘in the amounts of $45,000, $30,000 and $20,000 to the treasurer of the Isanti County Sheriff’s Foundation.

“I’m disappointed. I’m hurt,” said Isanti County Sheriff Wayne Sieberlich. “I have no part in the foundation at all it’s a separate entity and that’s by design, it’s a conflict .”

Sierberlich says the investigation was referred to the Chisago County Sheriff’s office to ensure there would be no conflict of interest.

Sierberlich says his wife is a board member of the Isanti County Sheriff’s Foundation and they have family ties to the woman now accused of stealing the money.

“Because a friend took advantage of a lot of people there are some people that think there’s a conspiracy or that we were involved in this some how and I just don’t know how to explain to people so that they understand there is no connection,” he said.

Other board members say the were not aware the woman opened bank accounts and deposited the money meant for Project612. The woman charged in this cause is also facing fraud charges in Pine County.

  • Lawsuit filed against MnDOT may wipe out funding plan for whitewater surf park

    [ad_1]

A lawsuit filed by Anoka County over the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s planned distribution of millions of dollars for a whitewater surf park in the city of Anoka claims the move would violate the state’s Constitution.

Court documents say a part of the 139-page omnibus transportation bill passed in June includes what is called in the lawsuit Section 19. The legislation, introduced by state DFL Representative Zack Stephenson, commands the MnDOT commissioner to ignore the agency’s guidelines and policies regarding money management and to take funds used to benefit transportation projects across the county and redirect them to the City of Anoka for a new pedestrian overpass where the Rum River dam is located.

The bridge would be the first stage of what Anoka County calls a “dubious boondoggle of a plan” to build a surf park on the Rum River in downtown Anoka that is estimated by the city to cost $55 million. The county also calls the park a “pet project” of Stephenson’s.

The document says voters and elected officials for Anoka County don’t want a third pedestrian bridge over the Rum River. In addition, the county says it wasn’t notified of the proposed bill or given time to consult about it.

Although republican Representative Harry Niska attempted to amend the bill during a House special session, that amendment failed with a vote of 62-67.

“This is one of the backroom deals that’s still in the bill, unfortunately. It’s a provision, a mandate on Anoka County to spend a portion of its sales tax money on something that was never a bill that was presented to the legislature. It’s a pet project for the co-chair of Ways and Means Committee,” said Niska.

“There is nothing about this that is as nefarious as he would indicate. This is a project that received vetting in a committee that was included on a House floor vote, and that was agreed to in a signed spreadsheet by leaders and held out in the public,” said Stephenson.

The project also doesn’t fall within any categories authorized by the legislature when it passed a law in 2023 regarding a special sales tax to support transportation projects within the seven-county metro area, according to the lawsuit. It goes on to say the sales tax fund law was created to be used on projects that would benefit residents of an entire county.

According to the lawsuit, the Minnesota Constitution prohibits this type of special legislation unless the local government unit affected by it approves it. The lawsuit, filed in late September, says Anoka County hasn’t approved Section 19, and won’t consent to the decision to divert transportation funds to the City of Anoka.

However, MnDOT has said it will distribute more than $6 million of transportation money to the city starting next year, even if Anoka County doesn’t consent to it. Once the funds are given to the city, the lawsuit says they are lost forever to the county, and there’s no independent source of funds that could replace the diverted money.

Anoka County says the funds could instead be used to create a grade-separated underpass on the Rum River Regional Trail in St. Francis, make improvements to trails in Kordiak Park in Columbia Heights or reconstruction work in Blaine’s Bunker Hills Regional Park.

The lawsuit goes on to say the plan “sets a dangerous precedent” that would allow a single legislator to divert county funds to a city in his district.

  • Gen Z credit scores are having a ‘catastrophic drop’—student loans and doomspending may be to blame | Fortune

    [ad_1]

As Gen Z awaits its share of the $124 trillion Great Wealth Transfer from their baby boomer relatives, the generation’s financial footing is being put to the test.

Typically, younger consumers see the fastest year-over-year gains in credit scores as they build their financial histories. But this year, the opposite happened: Gen Z just experienced the steepest annual drop of any age group since 2020, with their average FICO credit score slipping three points to 676. That’s 39 points lower than the national average of 715, according to a new FICO report.

The decline is a “red flag,” said Erin Stillwell, head of payments at Globant—not only for young consumers, but for the health of the broader credit market.

“Today’s young adults borrow just to reach baseline stability, not luxury,” she told Fortune. “The decline reflects a generation building financial identity in a system that rewards stability but gives volatility.”

And that volatility is piling up. Gen Z is more likely to feel the sting of stubborn inflation and high interest rates. With less time to build savings, invest in the stock market, or benefit from home appreciation, they’re already on shakier financial ground than their older counterparts. Add in the return of student loan payments and the rise of “doomspending”—the impulse to spend as a way with financial anxiety—and it’s become a perfect storm.

“Compared to past generations, Gen Z’s financial fragility isn’t just cyclical—it’s structural,” added Stillwell. “Gen Z is the first cohort facing high inflation, digital credit, and social-media-driven consumption pressure simultaneously.”

The long-term financial ‘snowball’ that could trap Gen Z

While it’s not uncommon for credit scores to ebb and flow—especially amid major shifts like the return of student loan payments—the current downturn could have lasting consequences if spending and repayment habits don’t change.

“I really was so disheartened when the information came out that Gen Z, the generation that is coming up, [that is supposed] to essentially help our country move in the way that it’s supposed to move… saw this catastrophic drop,” credit expert Micah Smith told Fox Business. “Once the credit scores drop, it’s like this snowball effect. Because what it does is, it impacts everything you do moving forward.”

A lower credit score can make it harder to qualify for credit cards or loans, push up borrowing costs, or even affect car insurance or apartment applications. Over time, that can trap young adults in a cycle of debt and missed opportunities to grow their financial futures—from starting a business to buying a home.

Homeownership in particular, long considered a cornerstone of the American Dream, is already slipping further out of reach. Gen Zers now carry more than $94,000 in personal debt on average, a Newsweek poll showed—far more than millennials’ roughly $60,000 or Gen X’s $53,000. With rent prices still high across much of the country, saving for a down payment can feel nearly impossible.

“It’s not just an individual issue—it’s a societal one,” Stillwell said. “A generation unable to build financial stability translates into lower economic dynamism and weaker household formation.”

Still, she said there’s room for optimism—especially if Gen Z treats their financial health just how they treat their body’s wellbeing: “Forgive yourself for early mistakes, but learn from them fast.”

“Financial resilience isn’t perfection; it’s iteration,” Stillwell said.

Fortune Global Forum returns Oct. 26–27, 2025 in Riyadh. CEOs and global leaders will gather for a dynamic, invitation-only event shaping the future of business. Apply for an invitation.

One easy way to add ashwagandha to your routine is through supplements. In clinical studies, participants experienced a 62% reduction in stress with supplement use. These studies were conducted using a double-blind design to ensure unbiased results.

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting new supplements.

    2. Practice Deep Breathing & Meditation

Stress can feel overwhelming, but the good news is that simple techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness meditation can work wonders for calming your nervous system. These practices aren’t just about finding peace in the moment; they actively help your body regulate stress responses, promoting both mental clarity and physical relaxation.

Box Breathing: A Simple Yet Powerful Tool

Box breathing, or square breathing, is a technique known to improve focus and reduce anxiety. Here’s how to do it:

    1. Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 counts.
    2. Hold your breath for 4 counts.
    3. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 4 counts.
    4. Pause and hold for another 4 counts before repeating.

This method increases oxygen flow, stabilizes your heart rate, and helps signal your body to relax. It’s perfect for moments of high tension or just as a daily practice to stay grounded.

    3. Move Your Body Daily

Physical activity isn’t just about staying in shape; it’s a proven stress reliever and component of a healthy immune system. Exercise helps lower cortisol (your body’s stress hormone) while boosting endorphins, often called the “feel-good” chemicals. Whether it’s a brisk walk, an energizing yoga session, or even a quick dance break in your living room, consistent movement can work wonders for your mental health.

    4. Choose Nourishing Foods

Did you know that what you eat can directly affect how well you handle stress?

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of stress management, as it helps your body and mind cope better with daily challenges. Nutrition plays a key role in supporting mental health and resilience, making it essential to focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods for stress relief.

Feed Your Gut, Calm Your Mind

Whole foods rich in fiber (like fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains) are your gut’s best friends. These foods help maintain a healthy microbiome, which communicates with your brain via the gut-brain axis. Research shows this connection affects how you process stress and anxiety.

    5. Prioritize Your Sleep Routine

Quality sleep is the foundation of mental clarity, emotional resilience, and overall well-being. Yet with our fast-paced lives, it can sometimes feel elusive. The key? Creating an intentional evening routine that helps your body transition from the stress of the day to restful, restorative sleep.

    6. Spend Time in Nature

Exposure to natural settings, whether it’s a stroll through a park, sitting in a garden, or simply enjoying a view of greenery, has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve mood.

In fact, studies show that just 20 minutes spent in nature can significantly lower cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. This isn’t just about feeling good; it’s about enhancing your overall well-being, from mental clarity to physical health.

    7. Take a Digital Detox

In today’s digital world, it’s no surprise that frequent screen use can lead to mental fatigue and stress. Constant exposure to blue light, endless notifications, and the pressure to always stay connected can wear down even the most focused minds. The good news? There are intentional, actionable steps you can take to detox from your devices, recharge your mental batteries, and cultivate healthier habits.

To combat mental fatigue, start by implementing structured breaks from your devices throughout the day. The “20-20-20 rule” is a simple strategy: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to reduce eye strain. For longer breaks, try the Pomodoro Technique; work in focused 25-minute intervals followed by a 5-minute break.

Pro Tip: Use break alarms or apps like “Stretchly” or “Focus Booster,” which gently remind you to step away from your screen.

    8. Cultivate Social Connections

Research consistently shows the profound impact relationships have on mental health. People with strong social ties are more resilient to stress, experience lower rates of anxiety and depression, and even have a lower risk of chronic illnesses.

Emotional support from loved ones can help regulate your nervous system, providing a sense of stability during tough times. Support from a family member, in particular, can play a crucial role in reducing stress and promoting emotional well-being. Simply put, humans are wired for connection; it’s a fundamental part of our survival and happiness.

Another effective way to build social connections and relieve stress is through volunteering. Engaging in volunteering activities not only supports others but also enhances your own sense of purpose and well-being.

    9. Harness the Power of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is a powerful tool for managing stress and supporting your mental health. It’s all about understanding your own feelings, recognizing emotions in others, and responding thoughtfully to life’s challenges. When you develop emotional intelligence, you’re better equipped to handle stressful situations, communicate effectively, and build stronger relationships.

Simple ways to boost your emotional intelligence include practicing self-awareness, listening actively, and showing empathy toward others. Over time, these skills can lead to greater emotional wellness, improved well-being, and a more resilient mindset, helping you navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence and calm.

Avoiding Unhealthy Habits: What to Watch Out For

When stress levels rise, it’s easy to fall into habits that can start to work against you. Skipping meals, reaching for sugary snacks, neglecting physical activity, or spending too much time on screens can all negatively impact your physical health and emotional well-being. Some people may also turn to smoking, excessive caffeine, or alcohol as a way to cope, but these habits can increase anxiety and disrupt sleep.

To support your health and reduce stress, try to replace these habits with positive alternatives. Start by choosing nourishing foods, making time for regular exercise, and setting boundaries around screen time. By practicing self-care and seeking support from friends or family members can also help you break the cycle of unhealthy habits. Summed up, by being mindful of your choices, you’ll build a stronger foundation for good health and long-term wellness.

Finding Your Calm, One Step at a Time

Stress may be part of modern life, but it doesn’t have to run the show. By embracing these natural, science-backed strategies, from mindful breathing and nourishing foods to supplements like ashwagandha, you can create a daily routine that supports both your mind and body.

Remember, consistency is key. Start with one or two techniques that feel manageable and build from there. Over time, these small habits add up, helping you feel more grounded, resilient, and in control, even when life gets busy.

And as always, listen to your body and consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement or wellness practice. Your path to calm and balance is unique to you; so take it one intentional step at a time.

Food pantries near U.S. military bases are seeing an increase in families seeking assistance.

Armed Services YMCA helps military families around the country

    Big picture view:

The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) provides resources to military families, including access to food security, child care and early childhood education.  ASYMCA has 22 food distribution locations across the country, including locations near large military installations such as Fort Hood, TX, Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Bragg, NC, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA, Twentynine Palms, CA , and Virginia Beach, VA.  ASYMCA also partners with local YMCAs around the country where it doesn’t have a location

The ASYMCA food pantry distribution location near Fort Hood says they have had a 34% increase in people seeking assistance. ASYMCA says they are working to increase their food supplies at all their locations to meet the increased demand for assistance.

    By the numbers:

Military personnel are paid on the 1st and 15th of each month and were paid on Oct. 1, but if the shutdown continues, troops may not receive their Oct. 15 pay.

During a government shutdown, members of the U.S. military, including active duty, National Guard and reserve members, and Coast Guard personnel, are not paid but must continue to report for duty to carry out their assigned responsibilities.

Senate Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain at an impasse

    What they’re saying:

Over the weekend, President Trump spoke at a ceremony marking the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary, where he reassured service members affected by the ongoing government shutdown, that they would receive “every last penny” of their pay promising an “across-the-board” raise once the impasse ends.

“I want you to know that despite the current Democrat-induced shutdown, we will get our service members every last penny,” Trump said. “Don’t worry about it, it’s all coming,” he added.

On Friday, a vote in the Senate to advance a Republican bill to reopen the government failed to get the necessary 60 votes to end a filibuster.

House Speaker MIke Johnson closed the House for legislative business this week, a strategy that could obligate the Senate to work with the government funding bill that was passed by House Republicans.

“Johnson’s not serious about this,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on CBS. “He sent all his congressmen home last week and home this week. How are you going to negotiate?”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Sunday that the shutdown on discretionary spending, the furloughing of federal workers and requirements that other federal employees work without pay will go on so long as Democrats vote no.

“They’ll get another chance on Monday to vote again,” Thune said on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”

“And I’m hoping that some of them have a change of heart,” he said.

  • How to Foster Love, Safety, and Support for Senior Couples at Home

    [ad_1]

As people grow older, having a safe and loving home becomes very important. Aging can bring problems that affect both the body and emotions, but a caring environment helps a lot. Picture waking up each day in a home full of love, safety, and support-this can be real for senior couples.

    Creating a Loving Environment

Love is the base of a happy home, especially for older couples. Talking often, showing affection, and making memories together are all important. Small acts like holding hands, eating meals together, or looking back on favorite moments can make their bond stronger and improve their emotional health.

Doing activities they both enjoy also helps them stay connected. This could be playing games, going for walks, or joining local events.

These moments bring a sense of community and belonging. It’s also important for couples to spend time alone together, away from daily tasks. Having a quiet space for rest and closeness can greatly improve their emotional well-being.

    Ensuring Safety in the Home

Along with love, safety is key to creating a supportive home for older couples. Making small changes around the house can lower risks. For example, adding grab bars in the bathroom, keeping walkways clear, and using non-slip mats can help prevent accidents.

Good lighting is also very important but often forgotten. Bright spaces reduce the chance of falls and help seniors feel secure. New tools like motion sensors and smart locks can add extra safety. These devices not only make life easier but also let family members check in, giving everyone peace of mind.

    Emergency Preparedness

Being ready for emergencies is another key part of safety. Older couples should have a plan that includes easy-to-find emergency numbers and a clear exit route.

They should also have a way to communicate quickly during an emergency, especially if one partner needs extra help. Going over the plan often makes sure both partners know what to do if something unexpected happens.

    Offering Emotional and Physical Support

Besides love and safety, emotional and physical support are also important for older couples. Partners often rely on each other, but outside help can make life better too. Joining community groups, senior centers, or support programs can build new friendships and give extra emotional support.

Taking care of physical health matters just as much. Regular check-ups, light exercise, and a balanced diet all help with overall well-being.

Couples can stay active together through easy activities like walking or gentle yoga. These not only improve health but also bring them closer and help them connect with others.

    Recognizing Signs of Stress

As stress and anxiety can affect cognitive and emotional health, it’s crucial for couples to be attuned to each other’s mental states. Signs such as withdrawal, mood swings, and disruptions in sleep or appetite may indicate a need for additional support. Engaging in regular check-ins with each other can create a safe space for discussing challenges and facilitate emotional release.

    The Role of Professional Care

Sometimes, the support of family members and friends isn’t enough, especially when complex health needs arise. In such cases, professional help becomes invaluable.

One option is to consider live in care for couples, which provides personalized support while allowing seniors to remain in the comfort of their own home. This type of care can assist with daily tasks such as meal preparation, personal care, and medication management.

    Promoting Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Fostering a healthy lifestyle is crucial for the happiness and longevity of senior couples. Establishing routines that incorporate nutritious meals and regular physical activity significantly impacts their well-being. Cooking together not only strengthens their bond but encourages healthier eating habits.

Regular health check-ups and screenings should also be a priority. Staying on top of medical appointments can prevent small issues from escalating into larger problems.

    Stress Management Techniques

Managing stress is also important for the emotional health of older couples. Activities like meditation, mindfulness, or gentle exercises such as yoga or tai chi can lower stress, improve flexibility, and bring a sense of calm. Doing these activities together can strengthen their bond and increase overall happiness.

    Celebrating Milestones

Celebrating milestones is a wonderful way for older couples to show love and commitment. This could be a wedding anniversary, a birthday, or even a personal achievement. Taking time to mark these moments brings happiness and meaning to their lives.

Small surprises or gatherings can rekindle joy and remind couples of the value of their journey together. Even simple acts of appreciation can grow into deeper feelings of love and support, creating a positive and warm home.

    Build a Strong Support Network

A solid support network is vital for ensuring the well-being of senior couples. Family members, friends, and neighbors can offer companionship and assistance in times of need. Encouraging open lines of communication fosters understanding and sets the stage for a collaborative approach to caregiving.

Additionally, leveraging local organizations and volunteer groups can connect senior couples with social opportunities and support. Joining clubs or classes can expand their circles, enhancing their overall quality of life.

    Creating a Household Plan

Establishing a household plan that clearly delineates responsibilities can alleviate stress and improve harmony at home. Both partners should collaborate on the division of tasks and ensure that they feel equally valued in their contributions. Regular discussions and check-ins can help to adapt and refine the plan as needed.

    Embracing Change Together

Change is a natural part of life, and facing it together can bring older couples closer. Whether it’s dealing with health issues or moving to a new home, working as a team builds strength and unity. Talking openly about feelings and worries helps both partners adjust and feel supported.

Being proactive not only solves problems in the moment but also prepares couples for future challenges. Supporting each other through change creates a strong and lasting bond that can thrive even during hard times.

Cultivating a Nurturing Home for Senior Couples

Building a caring home for older couples means focusing on love, safety, and support. By sharing affection and keeping communication open, couples can grow closer and strengthen their bond.

Safety steps, care options like live-in help, and community programs also improve daily life. In the end, a loving and secure home greatly boosts the well-being of senior couples and helps them enjoy their later years.

  • The Journey to a Confident Smile: Non-Negotiable Steps

    [ad_1]

A smile is more than a curve of the lips. It is a message that shows joy, comfort, and confidence. Yet for many people, smiling can feel difficult when they are not proud of their teeth. The path to a confident smile is not always simple, but it is worth every step.

With the right care, guidance, and support, anyone can transform how they feel about their smile. If you are ready to begin your journey, read on and discover the steps you cannot skip on the road to lasting confidence.

    Regular Checkups Build the Foundation

The first step toward a healthy and confident smile is routine care. Dental checkups are more than quick visits. They are opportunities to catch small issues before they become larger problems. Professional cleaning helps remove buildup that regular brushing misses.

Exams also allow dentists to monitor changes, track progress, and offer advice that matches your needs. These visits form the base of oral health, giving you peace of mind and a strong foundation for your journey.

    Daily Habits Shape Long-Term Results

What you do each day is just as important as what happens at the clinic. Brushing twice a day and flossing are simple tasks, but they carry powerful results. These habits prevent cavities, protect gums, and keep your breath fresh.

Pairing these steps with a balanced diet creates even better outcomes. Less sugar, more water, and healthy meals strengthen both teeth and gums. Over time, these daily efforts create a natural shine that makes smiling easy.

    Professional Treatments Enhance Confidence

Sometimes, basic care is not enough to reach the smile you dream of. Professional treatments, such as whitening, straightening, or restorations, may be necessary. These options improve not only appearance but also function. Straighter teeth make cleaning easier, while whitening can refresh your look.

Restorations such as crowns or implants repair damage and bring back comfort. At Impressions Dental Center, patients can find many of these treatments in one place, guided by experts who understand that every smile is unique.

    Confidence Comes with Consistency

A smile does not change overnight. It takes patience, commitment, and steady effort. Staying consistent with checkups, home care, and treatments ensures that progress continues. The more you follow through, the stronger and healthier your smile becomes.

Confidence grows naturally when you see and feel results over time. It is this consistency that makes all the difference, turning effort into a permanent part of your life.

Emotional Benefits of a Healthy Smile

A confident smile is not only about appearance. It also has a deep impact on how you feel inside. When you are happy with your teeth, you are more likely to laugh, speak, and connect with others without holding back.

This comfort can reduce stress and boost your self-esteem in daily life. Smiling freely changes how you see yourself and how others see you, building stronger relationships and creating positive energy in every interaction.

    Lasting Smiles Begin with You

The journey to a confident smile is not about quick fixes. It is about choosing health, forming habits, and trusting professionals who care. With steady steps, each moment adds up to something powerful: a smile that shines with ease.

Remember that your smile is part of your story, and you have the ability to shape it. Take the first step today, and let the journey lead you to confidence that lasts.

  • Russia recruits Arab fighters with promises, then sends them to Ukraine frontlines

    [ad_1]

The ad was straightforward: Sign up for one year to fight on Russia’s side in “the special military operation zone” — i.e. the war in Ukraine — and get citizenship, free healthcare, money and land.

It was one of many promotions cropping up on the messaging platform Telegram beginning in 2024, shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin decreed foreign nationals fighting in the army’s ranks would receive passports for themselves and their families. Since then, travel agencies and brokers have drawn people from all over the world to join what they call Russia’s “elite international battalion,” dangling a raft of benefits to attract would-be recruits.

For Raed Hammad, a 54-year-old Jordanian man who worked as a cab driver until a herniated disk made sitting in a car seat all day untenable, it seemed like the opportunity he never found in his home country. He contacted a Russian businesswoman, Polina Alexandrovna, whose number was on the Telegram ad, and sent his passport information. In August, he received a visa and flight ticket and flew to Moscow.

(Other media reports put Alexandrovna’s last name as Azarnykh. It’s unclear if her name is a pseudonym.)

“As a 54-year-old who was sick, he had a hard time finding employment here in Jordan. When he found this job, and they accepted him with a very attractive salary and benefits, he didn’t think twice,” said Lamees Hammad, his wife, in a tearful video address she posted on social media in September. Because of his age, Lamees Hammad added, her husband assumed he would work as a driver or a cook; she insisted he repeatedly confirmed with Alexandrovna that he wouldn’t serve on the front line.

“He wanted to provide for our kids, to give them what he couldn’t give them in the past,” Lamees Hammad said. Hammad is a father of four sons, the youngest of whom is 13.

But days after signing a 17-page army contract that Hammad couldn’t read — he was denied a Russian translator and wasn’t given access to WiFi to translate using his phone, according to his wife — he found himself bunkered in a drone-stalked forward position somewhere in Russian-occupied southeastern Ukraine.

“He’s facing all kinds of danger … If a rifle is raised in his face, he can’t even run. They’re being treated like livestock over there,” Lamees Hammad said in a recent interview with a Jordanian TV channel, adding that Hammad contacted Alexandrovna and begged to break his contract but was told he would have to pay 500,000 rubles — almost $6,000 — to do so.

Russian military personnel, draped in Russian flags, appear after a prisoner swap with Ukraine on June 24.

Accurate figures are hard to come by, but it’s clear that Hammad isn’t alone in fighting under Russia’s banner for benefits, with estimates putting the number of foreign fighters in Russian army ranks in the tens of thousands. Many come from disadvantaged countries in the Middle East, Africa and South and East Asia.

Some 2,000 Iraqis are thought to have enlisted, but press reports indicate thousands joining from Egypt, Algeria, Yemen and Jordan. Fighters from Nepal, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cuba and Syria, who in the past came in significant numbers, are no longer allowed to join, according to the Russian defense ministry.

Foreigners have also served on the opposing side, with Ukrainian officials stating in the past that roughly 20,000 fighters from 50 countries joined Ukraine’s International Legion, including around 3,000 Iraqis.

In the Russian military, many of the enlisted foreigners came to Russia first as students, but their visas lapsed and they do not want to return home. A significant number also travel to Moscow on tourist visas after they are approved by the military. Once in Russia, they visit offices of companies like Alexandrovna’s and sign a contract with the Russian ministry of defense; others are met by a broker and a Russian officer at the airport.

Offers vary, but recruits can receive a signing bonus of 1.5 million rubles (around $17,000), and depending on where they fight, get a monthly salary ranging between $2,500 to $3,500 — a life-changing amount in countries like Egypt, where the average salary barely exceeds $300.

Training lasts four to six weeks and includes language instruction so foreigners can follow basic commands in Russian. They receive citizenship soon after they join, and are given a two-week paid vacation six months into their one-year deployment. If they are killed or wounded, their families can claim the money and citizenship.

Among the recruitment ads, which appear in Arabic and other languages, Alexandrovna’s channel keeps up a steady rhythm of posts extolling the Russian army’s victories in Ukraine.

Alexandrovna herself appears in several photos taken with recruits when they first land in Russia; others depict foreign soldiers after they receive their citizenship, smiling to the camera and proudly showing off their passports. Her clients appear to be mostly from the Arab world and parts of Africa.

“Each of my soldiers is a source of pride,” she writes in one post, saying that they add to the “victory against the neo-Nazis from Ukraine.”

“Every soldier must proudly and steadfastly defend the new homeland of Russia, because Russia becomes a new homeland for each of them!” she writes.

Despite the risks, there’s no lack of interest: A look on Alexandrovna’s Telegram channel, titled “Friend of Russia” and featuring a picture of Putin, shows more than 22,000 subscribers. Another channel, run by an Iraqi man who calls himself Bahjat, has almost 30,000.

Members of a thousands-strong Telegram community group run by an Iraqi with the nickname Abbass the Supporter — who served in the Russian military for three years but now works as a broker and answers questions about deployments on his TikTok channel — participate in chats asking how quickly they can get their visa and travel.

When contacted by The Times, Alexandrovna denied giving false information to would-be recruits but did not answer detailed questions about Hammad. Nevertheless, it’s unclear how Hammad concluded he would serve in rear positions: Most ads on Alexandrovna’s channel explicitly say foreigners must fight in Ukraine, with no mention of being able to join as a driver or cook, and in any case, those decisions are made by the defense ministry.

The E-visa form inquires about military experience. Bahjat, who spoke on condition of only giving his first name, said those coming to the Russian army from abroad should expect to go into combat, and that breaking the contract risks imprisonment.

“What, you think a country is going to give you money and citizenship so you come and cook?” he said in a WhatsApp chat.

“I’ll give it to you straight. Everyone coming here is going to the frontline and to the war. Anyone saying otherwise is speaking nonsense.”

The Jordanian ministry did not answer questions about Hammad, but legal experts say governments have little recourse to repatriate their citizens if they signed a contract, unless they can prove they did so under duress.

Lamees Hammad has been pleading with Jordan’s King Abdullah and government officials to communicate with the Russian foreign ministry and to bring her husband home. But in the meantime, she said, she hoped the Jordanian government would at least block Telegram channels like Alexandrovna’s to prevent others from following in Hammad’s steps.

“People should know if they do this,” she said, “they’re going to their death.”
