Beloved Apple TV Show To Get a Prequel After Season 2

MonsterVerse fans have much to rejoice about, as Apple TV has reportedly greenlit a prequel for the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series. Ongoing speculation suggests that executives at the renowned streaming service have agreed to expand the world of Monarch with a spin-off series that will come out after the premiere of its upcoming Season 2.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters prequel series reportedly happening

According to a report published by Nexus Point News, Apple TV is moving ahead with a prequel show for Monarch, which will see Wyatt Russell reprise his role as the younger version of Lee Shaw. Notably, the Thunderbolts* star’s real-life father, Kurt Russell, portrays the present-day Lee Shaw in the MonsterVerse’s premier TV show.

While precise plot details regarding the prequel project remain under wraps, at the time of writing, sources have claimed that the series will take place during the Cold War era. As such, it will seemingly deal with the emergence of monsters at a time when the United States of America was embroiled in deep-rooted political tensions with the Soviet Union.

Joby Harold of Obi-Wan Kenobi fame will reportedly take the reins of the Apple TV series, serving as the showrunner of the Monarch prequel. He will also executive produce the show along with his wife and professional partner, Tory Tunnell, under the banner of their production company, Safehouse Pictures, as per the report. Wyatt Russell, in addition to playing a leading role in the series, will executive produce the show as well. Interestingly, Harold and Tunnell have already executive-produced Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

The unnamed Monarch spin-off becomes yet another addition to the super-successful MonsterVerse franchise, which has spawned five films and one live-action TV series so far.

Production on the show will reportedly commence in Prague in the summer of 2026. As such, the prequel series is expected to arrive after the premiere of the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: Supernova movie, which is currently on track to release on March 26, 2027, as well as Monarch Season 2, which comes out on Apple TV on February 27, 2026.

Monarch Egg Hatching – Video | Show Me Nature Photography
Today’s post has been a few days in the making. Back in September when the Monarch migration was underway, I photographed a lot of Monarch caterpillars and butterflies in their busy, nonstop activities. I collected several Monarch eggs from the church butterfly garden and set up a “nursery/studio” in my dining room.

One of my main projects this fall was to video the hatching of a Monarch egg. This was done for several eggs and I have been busy the last couple of weeks editing and chopping up the video into smaller clips. From there, I spliced pieces together relevant sections to get a much shorter (less than 3 minutes long) video of one of the little guys hatching. Please watch the entire video … the beginning of the video is a bit slow, but watch for movement inside the egg. And after the caterpillar emerges, watch it eat it’s first meal … the protein eggshell. At the end of the video, I’ve included a photo of a newly-hatched caterpillar with a reference, so you can see how small the caterpillar is! Also, please note that all young caterpillars were released back into the butterfly garden, so that they could continue their life’s journey.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters takes the Watchmen approach to a Godzilla show

The rise of franchise-first pop culture has made what was previously a genre stumbling block into everyone’s problem: Exposition. Specifically, the stuff we call “lore.” When every big show or movie has to connect to something else, those connections aren’t always graceful. Especially when you need to work in how your villain was in the Amazon with your mom when she was researching spiders right before she died.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Apple TV Plus’ extremely good mystery-thriller based on Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, deftly dances around every major pitfall modern mega-franchises happily dive into. The series packs the frame with fascinating little details that unobtrusively build out the world of the show without having characters explain much of anything. It’s thoughtful in its visual design in a way that recalls HBO’s Watchmen, another show full of extensive references to a prior work, carefully building out a story that stood on its own.

The similarity is more than superficial. Both shows are very interested in the background construction of a political and cultural apparatus predicated on one massive, divergent event in history. Both shows have clearly had writers do a ton of mapping out the ways in which their fictional worlds were similar and the ways in which they diverged, and instead of having characters recite endless factoids better served by a wiki, they merely depict the characters living in that world. It’s for the viewer to notice the ways in which it is different.

The early episodes of Monarch are filled with details like this. Passengers on a commercial flight are sprayed down by men in hazmat suits after an international trip, airline corridors have clearly marked Godzilla evacuation routes, and installations of military weaponry stand ready for another Titan appearance.

This, coupled with the show’s noteworthy focus on human drama about two siblings whose father kept them from each other, gives Monarch a thematic richness that surprises and delights. If the big, cacophonous MonsterVerse movies use their kaiju as a metaphor for humanity’s disregard for the planet on a grand scale, then Monarch personalizes that devastation. Not just by showing what it’s like to try and adhere to normalcy after surviving a spectacular catastrophe, but in showing how the men and women who chased these monsters over generations shattered their families to pursue their reckless work — work that would in turn shatter the planet.

Monarch is less openly about thorny, difficult topics than Watchmen was. You won’t find, for example, provocative explorations of race in America. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a show for these times. Much like Watchmen found new relevance in its revisitation of a comic book from 1986, Monarch finds depths to plumb in the haphazard cinematic universe that was jury-rigged around Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla remake. In it, we can see a consideration of humanity’s struggles to navigate a collective disaster, a casual reflection of our inability to solve great crises without militarism, and the way institutions warp fear of collapse into an excuse to control more of our lives. The story may be set in 2015, but few genre shows feel more 2023.

What Prince Harry and Prince William’s Silent Coronation Showdown Means

During the coronation service for King Charles III and Queen Camilla on Saturday, one moment served to remind viewers of the family at the center of the ceremony: Near the service’s end, Prince William dropped to his knees and pledged an oath similar to the one his grandfather Prince Philip uttered at the 1953 coronation of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. “I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb,” he said. “So help me, God.”

In the audience three rows back sat Prince Harry, who had traveled from Los Angeles. He had kept the details of his trip so tightly under wraps, as cohosts Katie Nicholl and Erin Vanderhoof explain, that his family had to remove a place setting for him at their informal coronation luncheon when they realized that the spare was already long gone, having flown immediately back to California.

Despite the melancholy lingering over such tangled dynamics, the event went off without a hitch—not counting the rain.
