  • What Is Animal Chiropractic—and How Does It Work? | Animal Wellness Magazine

For many dog owners, the idea of chiropractic care for animals sounds either surprising or downright strange. Isn’t chiropractic something for people with bad backs? What does it have to do with dogs? As it turns out, a lot.

Animal chiropractic is a growing field that focuses on one critical principle: the connection between the spine and the nervous system. When that connection is free and functional, your dog’s body works better. When it’s restricted, the result can be pain, stiffness, behavioral changes, and even organ dysfunction.

The beauty of chiropractic lies in its simplicity. It doesn’t treat specific diseases or prescribe medication. Instead, it works with your dog’s own innate intelligence, the body’s built-in ability to heal and regulate itself. When the spine is properly aligned, that natural healing potential is unleashed.

    Understanding the Nervous System-Spine Relationship

To understand how animal chiropractic works, you first need to understand how the nervous system functions. The nervous system is the master control system of the body. It sends messages between the brain and every organ, gland, muscle, and tissue. Whether your dog is wagging their tail, digesting breakfast, fighting off an infection, or reacting to a sound, it all happens through the nervous system.

The spine houses and protects the spinal cord, which is like the main communication highway connecting the brain to the rest of the body. But the spine is more than a shield—it’s a moving, dynamic structure. Each vertebra is connected by joints, supported by muscles, and wrapped in connective tissue. When one of those vertebrae becomes restricted in movement or misaligned (a condition called a vertebral subluxation), it can irritate nearby nerves or interfere with signal transmission.

This nerve interference can lead to a wide variety of symptoms—some obvious, like limping or stiffness, and some subtle, like lethargy, frequent infections, behavioral changes, or poor digestion. Chiropractic care addresses these problems not by treating symptoms directly, but by correcting the structural imbalances that cause them.

What Happens During an Animal Chiropractic Session?

Certified animal chiropractors begin with a detailed health history and a hands-on examination of your dog’s posture, gait, spinal alignment, and muscle tone. They may ask about behavioral changes, appetite, or even how your dog prefers to sit or sleep—because all of these can offer clues about what’s happening in the spine.

Next comes the palpation exam. The chiropractor will gently feel along the spine and joints, assessing restricted movement, muscle spasms, heat, swelling, or misalignment. This step is precise and highly refined—animal chiropractors are trained to detect subtle shifts that aren’t visible to the untrained eye.

If a subluxation is detected, the chiropractor delivers a gentle, specific adjustment. This is a rapid but controlled movement applied by hand to a joint that is not moving correctly. The goal is to restore normal motion, reduce tension, and remove interference from the nervous system.

Contrary to popular belief, adjustments are not forceful, and they’re nothing like the dramatic “cracking” you may have seen in human chiropractic videos. In fact, most dogs tolerate the adjustment well and often respond with a stretch, shake, or visible relaxation afterward. Some dogs even fall asleep.

    Is It Safe?

Yes, when performed by a certified professional, animal chiropractic is very safe. Chiropractors and veterinarians who pursue post-graduate certification in animal chiropractic undergo hundreds of hours of specialized education, including anatomy, neurology, biomechanics, and hands-on clinical skills. Programs like those recognized by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) require rigorous training and testing.

That said, chiropractic should never be performed by someone without proper credentials. Dog anatomy is not the same as human anatomy, and improper techniques can cause harm. Always ask to see proof of certification, and make sure your animal chiropractor is legally permitted to practice in your state or province.

    What Can Chiropractic Help With?

Because the nervous system is involved in virtually every function of the body, chiropractic can have wide-reaching benefits. These may include:

    • Improved mobility and flexibility
    • Relief from stiffness, limping, or lameness
    • Enhanced performance in working and sport dogs
    • Faster recovery from injuries or surgeries
    • Reduced inflammation and joint stress
    • Better digestion and elimination
    • Increased energy and engagement
    • Support for aging dogs dealing with arthritis or weakness
    • Reduction in anxiety and mood-related behaviors

But chiropractic doesn’t “treat” these conditions in the way traditional medicine does. It simply removes interference so that the body can correct its own dysfunctions. For example, if a misaligned vertebra is affecting the nerve that supplies the hind leg, restoring that alignment can allow the nerve to resume normal function, and the dog may stop limping.

    Chiropractic is particularly valuable for:

    • Performance Dogs: Agility, herding, flyball, and dock-diving dogs place significant demands on their bodies. Routine chiropractic care can improve coordination, prevent injuries, and support recovery.
    • Senior Dogs: Older dogs often experience stiffness, muscle loss, and balance issues. Adjustments can improve comfort and slow the physical decline associated with aging.
    • Puppies: Rapid growth, awkward play, and birth trauma can all contribute to early misalignments. Starting chiropractic care early can help set a foundation for balanced development.
    • Post-Surgical Dogs: Dogs recovering from orthopedic surgery often develop compensatory patterns. Chiropractic care can help them regain symmetry and prevent overuse of the opposite limb.

How Often Should My Dog Get Adjusted?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Frequency depends on your dog’s age, activity level, health status, and goals. An agility dog might benefit from weekly or biweekly adjustments during competition season. A senior pet may do well with monthly care to manage arthritis. For many family pets, a schedule of every 4–6 weeks works well as maintenance.

After an initial exam and adjustment, your chiropractor will recommend a care plan based on your dog’s specific needs. Just like with dental cleanings or grooming, consistency is key to getting the full benefit.

What’s the Difference Between Chiropractic and Other Modalities?

Chiropractic care is sometimes confused with massage, physical therapy, or acupuncture. While all of these are valuable, they each serve different functions:

    • Massage targets soft tissues to relieve tension and improve circulation.
    • Physical therapy focuses on rehabilitating injured muscles and joints through exercises and modalities.
    • Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body to influence energy flow and nerve function.
    • Chiropractic corrects joint restrictions to restore normal spinal function and nerve flow.

Often, the best outcomes occur when these modalities are used together in an integrative care plan. Chiropractic is not meant to replace your veterinarian, but to complement their care by addressing structural imbalances that can affect recovery and performance.

    What Results Can I Expect?

Results can be immediate, cumulative, or subtle. Some dogs show improvement right after their first adjustment—moving more freely, jumping up with ease, or playing with renewed enthusiasm. Others need several sessions before significant change is noticeable, especially if the problem has been long-standing.

Just as importantly, chiropractic helps prevent problems before they start. Many owners report fewer injuries, fewer vet visits, and better overall wellness when their dog receives regular adjustments.

And then there’s the intangible: the lightness in your dog’s step, the extra tail wags, the way they stretch and breathe more easily. When the body is in balance, your dog simply feels better—and it shows.

    The Takeaway:
Animal chiropractic is not a trend—it’s a science-based, hands-on way to help your dog live a more comfortable, agile, and balanced life. Whether your dog is a working athlete or a beloved couch companion, chiropractic care supports the nervous system that runs it all. When that system is clear, your dog has the best chance to heal, move, and thrive—naturally.

  • The Secret to Senior Pet Vitality? A Thousand-Year-Old Ingredient May Hold the Key! | Animal Wellness Magazine

Every pet parent wants their dog or cat to stay active, happy, and healthy well into their senior years, and science is pointing to sialic acid as a secret to senior pet vitality.

Nobody wants to see their beloved fur baby slow down as they age. Muscle loss, pain, cognitive decline, and a weakened immune system can all chip away at their vitality. But what if there were a single, natural solution that could address all four of these issues?

Thanks to a groundbreaking product from Japan, there is! MIRANEST uses a proprietary blend of ingredients, including a centuries-old wellness secret derived from swiftlet nest, to help dogs and cats age with strength, comfort, and energy. Thousands of pet parents are already using MIRANEST to restore senior pet vitality, and here’s how it works.

It Supports Muscle Health to Maintain Vigor

As dogs and cats age, they naturally lose muscle mass and strength. This decline can lead to:

    • Reduced mobility
    • Weight gain
    • Stress on the bones and joints
    • Pain and inflammation

As such, keeping your fur baby’s muscles strong is key when it comes to supporting vitality during their golden years.

MIRANEST’s swiftlet nest extract is rich in sialic acid, one of eight essential glyconutrients, which supports muscle repair, growth, and maintenance, helping seniors stay strong and active.

MIRANEST Manages Pain to Keep Activity Levels High

Pain is one of the biggest barriers to senior pet vitality. It’s impossible for dogs and cats to feel their best and live their best lives when they’re experiencing discomfort or chronic pain because of conditions like osteoarthritis. In fact, it can stop them from engaging in their favorite activities, make stairs a challenge, and even prevent regular exercise.

MIRANEST’s natural formula helps slow the progression of osteoarthritis and supports cartilage regeneration. This means more comfort, more mobility, and more of the joyful activities they love.

It Prevents Cognitive Decline to Preserve Youthful Playfulness

Cognitive decline can affect sleep, energy, playfulness, and activity levels, leading to stress, anxiety, withdrawal, and a lower quality of life.

MIRANEST’s key ingredient, swiftlet nest extract, has been shown to have neuroprotective effects. It helps support brain function, keeping your fur baby mentally sharp and emotionally engaged well into their golden years.

MIRANEST Protects the Immune System to Support Overall Health and Energy

The immune system tends to weaken with age, leading to illness and inflammation that impact energy, mood, appetite, and overall quality of life. The sialic acid in MIRANEST products plays an important role in:

    • Controlling inflammation
    • Modulating the immune system
    • Protecting against pathogens

By supporting immune function, MIRANEST helps dogs and cats stay resilient and full of life.

Support Senior Pet Vitality with All-Natural MIRANEST!

MIRANEST is made from cruelty-free, sustainably sourced swiftlet nest extract and plant-based ingredients. It provides all eight essential glyconutrients to naturally support senior pet vitality and health, from muscles and joints to immune and cognitive function.

I’ve tried several supplements for my dog, but the MIRANEST Jelly Stick has been the most effective. After a few weeks, I noticed a significant improvement in my dog’s coat and energy levels. It’s easy to give, and he loves the taste. I’m definitely sticking with this one. – Grace

  • The Golden Spice: Benefits of Turmeric for Joint Health in Dogs | Animal Wellness Magazine

Turmeric, often hailed as a “golden spice,” has been revered in traditional medicine for centuries. But did you know it’s not just beneficial for humans? This vibrant yellow root offers incredible health benefits for dogs, particularly in supporting joint health.

    Turmeric and Its Healing Properties

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. For dogs suffering from arthritis or joint pain, curcumin can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain, improving their overall quality of life. Additionally, its antioxidant properties help combat oxidative stress, further protecting joint tissues.

    How Turmeric Enhances Mobility

Dogs experiencing joint issues often have limited mobility, impacting their ability to run, play, and even walk comfortably. Incorporating turmeric into their diet can help restore some of this lost mobility. By reducing inflammation, turmeric helps ease stiffness and pain, enabling dogs to move more freely and enjoy their daily activities.

    Turmeric’s Role in Pain Management

Chronic pain can significantly affect a dog’s demeanor and behavior. Turmeric offers a natural alternative to traditional pain medications. Its anti-inflammatory effects can help manage chronic pain more naturally and with fewer side effects. This makes it an excellent option for long-term management of joint pain and arthritis.

    Dosage and Administration

It’s important to consult with a veterinarian before giving turmeric for joint health in dogs. The appropriate dosage depends on their size and health condition. Turmeric can be administered in various forms, including powder, capsules, or even a paste mixed with the dog’s food. Always start with a small amount and gradually increase it to avoid any digestive issues.

    Combining Turmeric with Other Supplements

Turmeric for joint health in dogs works well in conjunction with other natural supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin. These supplements, combined with turmeric, provide a more comprehensive approach to joint health. They help rebuild cartilage and improve joint function, offering a holistic solution to maintaining healthy joints.

    Practical Tips for Incorporating Turmeric

Adding turmeric to your dog’s diet is simple. You can sprinkle it over their food, mix it with coconut oil to enhance absorption, or prepare “golden paste.” This simple mixture of turmeric, water, and a healthy fat like coconut oil can be stored and used daily to boost joint health.

Conclusion: A Holistic Approach to Joint Health

Turmeric is not just a culinary delight but a potent ally for maintaining canine joint health. By incorporating this golden spice into your dog’s diet, you can help them lead a more active, pain-free life. As always, consult with your veterinarian to ensure you’re providing the right care. Together, we can ensure our beloved companions live their golden years with vitality and joy.

  • 6 Signs Your Dog or Cat May Benefit from Supplements | Animal Wellness Magazine

6 Signs Your Dog or Cat May Benefit from Supplements | Animal Wellness Magazine

Every dog and cat parent will face unique challenges with their fur baby, and there are many issues you can help support with the right supplements. Here are six signs supplements might benefit your dog or cat!

A good diet and regular exercise go a long way in supporting canine and feline health. However, diet, environment, genetics, and other factors also influence health. Seasonal allergies, skin & coat challenges, digestive issues, changing appetite or energy levels—all these issues may indicate that your fur baby might benefit from supplements. Let’s look at some of these issues and how you can help support whole-body health from the inside out!

    1. Skin and Coat Health

Skin and coat health is important for dogs and cats for many reasons. Fur provides insulation, protects them from the elements, and even helps them communicate. Similarly, the skin provides protection from bacteria, helps regulate temperature and maintain moisture balance, and more. A supplement that provides nutritional benefits can help support skin and coat health if you notice changes in their skin and coat condition.

    2. Joint Health, Comfort, and Mobility

Joint health challenges, especially associated with aging or active pets are common, and they can impact mobility, activity levels, and quality of life. Supplements that help to promote a healthy inflammatory response may help dogs and cats with their joints and mobility.

    3. Digestive and Gut Health

Digestive health is linked to whole body health because it plays a role in nutrient absorption, energy production, immune health, hormone regulation, and more. As such, healthy digestion contributes to healthy stool consistency, a healthy appetite, good energy levels, and comfort after eating. Supplements that support overall health can also help to support a healthy gut if you notice changes in their digestive health.

    4. Changing Energy Levels

Not all dogs and cats are built the same when it comes to energy levels. Some are dedicated couch potatoes, some don’t mind exercise, and others jump at every chance for play or activity. A sign that you may need to consult with your veterinarian, however, is if you notice a change in their energy levels. Ensuring your dog or cat gets all the right nutrients through diet and supplements can help them maintain their energy levels and keep them spry and playful.

    5. Dental Health

Good dental health supports physical and mental well-being in dogs and cats. Strong teeth help dogs and cats chew, help keep their mouths pain-free, and encourage them to enjoy their food. In turn, the right food and supplements can help build and maintain strong teeth.

    6. Age-Related Needs

Animals have different needs at different life stages, and diet alone may not always provide adequate support. For example, puppies and kittens need additional nutrients as they grow to ensure healthy development. On the other end of the spectrum, senior dogs and cats have their own needs and can often benefit from additional support for their joints, mobility, energy levels, vision, brain health, and weight management.

Support Whole-Body Health with Whole-Food Supplements

Spirited Paw whole food-based supplements are formulated with human-quality ingredients to support healthy dogs and cats. Whether your pup or kitty needs additional support for dental health, joints & mobility, or overall health and vitality, Spirited Paw has high-quality supplements that supply nutrients, minerals, and functional ingredients.

  • How Homeopathy Can Help Cats With Arthritis | Animal Wellness Magazine

How Homeopathy Can Help Cats With Arthritis | Animal Wellness Magazine

Arthritis can be a painful condition for cats, and affects their mobility and overall quality of life. While conventional treatments are available, many cat parents are exploring homeopathy as a natural alternative. This blog post will delve into how homeopathy can help manage arthritis in cats, providing insights into its benefits and remedies.

    What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic approach to medicine that focuses on treating the whole animal rather than just the symptoms of a disease. The principle behind homeopathy is “like cures like,” meaning that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy individual can, in very small doses, treat similar symptoms in someone who is ill. Homeopathic remedies are made from natural substances and are highly diluted, making them safe for cats.

Homeopathy Offers Several Benefits for Arthritis

    • Gentle and Safe: Homeopathic remedies are generally well-tolerated by cats and have minimal side effects compared to conventional medications, which can sometimes cause gastrointestinal or kidney issues.
    • Supports Overall Health: Homeopathy not only addresses the symptoms of arthritis but also aims to improve the overall health and well-being of your cat, promoting a better quality of life.
    • Individualized Treatment: Homeopathy allows for personalized treatment plans based on your cat’s specific symptoms and overall health, making it a tailored approach to managing arthritis.

4 Common Homeopathic Remedies for Arthritis in Cats

Several homeopathic remedies have shown promise in alleviating arthritis symptoms in cats. Here are a few commonly used options:

    1. Rhus Toxicodendron: This remedy is particularly effective for cats that experience stiffness and pain, especially after resting. Symptoms often improve with movement.
    2. Arnica Montana: Known for its ability to reduce pain and inflammation, Arnica is beneficial for cats suffering from joint pain due to arthritis.
    3. Traumeel: This combination remedy contains multiple homeopathic ingredients that work together to relieve pain and inflammation in joints.
    4. Calcarea Carbonica: This remedy is often used for older cats with arthritis, especially if they are overweight or have a sluggish metabolism

    How to Administer Homeopathic Remedies

Administering homeopathic remedies to cats is quite straightforward. Here are some tips:

    1. Consult a Veterinarian: Always consult with a veterinarian who is knowledgeable about homeopathy to determine the best remedy and dosage for your cat’s specific condition.
    2. Use Pellets or Liquid Form: Homeopathic remedies are available in pellet or liquid form. Pellets can be crushed and mixed with a small amount of food or given directly into the mouth.
    3. Monitor Your Cat: Keep an eye on your cat’s response to the remedy. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult your veterinarian for further guidance.

    Conclusion

Homeopathy offers a gentle and effective approach to managing arthritis in cats. By focusing on the individual needs of your feline friend and utilizing natural remedies, you can help improve their comfort and quality of life. Always consult with a veterinarian to ensure the best treatment plan for your cat’s unique situation.

How To Walk For Better Posture + The Role It Plays In Your Health

Are you sitting up straight right now? I know I wasn’t before I wrote that sentence. I’d argue, most of us aren’t much of the time—but we know this. • Historic low HIV infection rates in New York

Historic low HIV infection rates in New York

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. (NEWS10) — June 27 is National HIV testing day, and the New York State Department of Health says New York is at an all-time low of new infection rates. NEWS10 speaking with a local group on their efforts here in the capital region to help eradicate the disease.

New York has hit historic lows in HIV new infection rates since the pandemic’s height in the 1990s. However local HIV specialists say now is not the time to relax.

“The battle is not over. There are places and populations that are increasing in rates of infection, and we need to get those individuals identified and we need to help them get into the care that they need. Because there are things that we can do now that’ll make life normal and long lived,” said Kim Atkins, Executive Director Alliance for Positive Health.

New York’s new infection rates have plummeted 42% since 2011 from nearly 4000 new infections a year down to just over 2000 a year in 2022. 18% of new infections tested positive for AIDS and 69% of new infection rate diagnoses are people under the age of 40.

The Alliance for Positive Health has been providing free testing for nearly 40 years. “Testing needs to continue, and we need to identify people because people are still getting infected,” said Atkins.

And now, the Alliance for Positive Health teams can get to more people in further away places with their new mobility fleet.  “This is the newer one we have a larger one that we could test two people at once. Recover 15 counties so we go all the way up to Plattsburgh and all the way down to Hudson and anywhere in between,” said Testing Supervisor Alliance for Positive Health, Niurka Diaz Gonzalez.

Chris Francis has been with the Alliance team for over 10 years and is part of the Care Coordination. He tells NEWS10 Reporter James De La Fuente about the importance of testing.

“I suggest people get tested every couple, of every two to three months. Especially if they’re sexually active.” Francis says testing is personal. “I care about my physical and mental health. It can take a toll on your mental health if you don’t get tested not knowing what you have or if you’re clean.”

As black and brown communities are adversely affected Chandler Hickenbottom, co-founder of Saratoga BLM says her organization is taking focus on testing, as well.

“As of right now we don’t have anything posted. But I think that is something that after having this conversation, I think it would be really great and important for us to start getting more involved in. So, joining the campaign to show the importance of not just getting tested in general, not just even for HIV, but for all sexually transmitted infections and STD’s. That is definitely very important,” said Hickenbottom.

A spokesperson with NYDOH says, “HIV in New York State has fallen to historic lows. At its peak in the mid-1990s, New York diagnosed nearly 15,000 new cases per year; that number was down to 2,318 in 2022.”

In addition to testing with Alliance for Positive Health, the New York State Department of Health Aids Institute has announced the launch of their free HIV self-test giveaway.

Britain seeks to train military inside Ukraine, UK defense chief says

LONDON — Britain is in talks to move more training and production of military equipment into Ukraine, U.K. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said.

In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, which took place following a briefing with Chief of the General Staff Patrick Sanders on Friday, Shapps said he had been “talking today about eventually getting the training brought closer and actually into Ukraine as well.”

“Particularly in the west of the country, I think the opportunity now is to bring more things ‘in country,’ and not just training but also we’re seeing [U.K. defense firm] BAE, for example, move into manufacturing in country,” he said.

“I’m keen to see other British companies do their bit as well by doing the same thing. So I think there will be a move to get more training and production in the country,” Shapps said.

The U.K. and other NATO members have so far avoided setting up a military presence in Ukraine to reduce the risk of a direct conflict between the defense alliance and Russia.

Dmitry Medvedev, chairman of Russia’s security council, suggested that British soldiers training Ukrainian troops in Ukraine would make them legitimate targets for Russian forces. The move would “turn your instructors into legal targets for our armed forces,” Medvedev said on Telegram. “Knowing full well that they will be mercilessly destroyed. And not as mercenaries, but precisely as British NATO specialists.”

Shapps traveled to Kyiv last week where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Talking about Russian attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea, Shapps said: “It’s important that we don’t allow a situation to establish by default that somehow international shipping isn’t allowed in that water.”

The US wants Europe to buy American weapons; the EU has other ideas

Press play to listen to this article

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

This article is part of the Europe’s strategic impotence Special Report.

At NATO summit after NATO summit, European leaders get a clear public message from Washington — increase spending on defense.

In private, there’s another message that’s just as clear — make sure a lot of that extra spending goes on U.S. weapons.

    European leaders are resisting.

“We must develop a genuinely European defense technological and industrial base in all interested countries, and deploy fully sovereign equipment at European level,” French President Emmanuel Macron said at the GLOBSEC conference in Bratislava last month.

The decades of cajoling from Washington are paying off. Although most EU countries aren’t yet meeting NATO’s target of spending 2 percent of GDP on defense, the alliance has seen eight years of steady spending increases. In 2022, spending by European countries was up by 13 percent to $345 billion — almost a third higher than a decade ago — much of it a reaction to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Now the question is how that money will be spent.

The U.S. wants to ensure that European countries — which already spend about half of their defense purchasing on American kit — don’t make a radical switch to spending more of that money at home.

Some European leaders are hoping that’s exactly what happens, but it’s an open question whether the Continent’s defense industry can make that happen.

“Traditionally, there was a suspicion about a change in Europe’s defense capabilities which dates back more than 25 years,” said Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia, Eurasia Program at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. “What direction would the EU go, would it mean the EU would decouple from NATO, what would the impact be on U.S. defense industrial policy?”

    Buying at home

The current tensions in Brussels are over whether new EU-wide defense policy should be limited to EU companies — a position driven by Macron and Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, a Frenchman. That confirms suspicions stateside about European protectionism when it comes to allowing U.S. companies to compete for EU contracts.

“Our plan is to directly support, with EU money, the effort to ramp up our defense industry, and this for Ukraine and for our own security,” Breton said last month.

But there’s an uncomfortable fact for the backers of European strategic autonomy: When it comes to arms, Europe still depends on the U.S.

While European companies have deep expertise in defense — building everything from France’s Rafale fighter to Germany’s Leopard tank and Poland’s man-portable Piorun air-defense system — the scale of the U.S. arms industry, as well as its technological innovation, makes it attractive for European weapons buyers.

The most common big-ticket item is Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, at a cost of $80 million a pop. There is also an immediate surge in demand for off-the-shelf items like shoulder-fired missiles and artillery shells.

“Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, European states want to import more arms, faster,” said a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

    Buying abroad

The war in Ukraine has underscored the dominance of the U.S. defense industry.

A host of European countries are buying Javelin anti-tank missiles produced by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin; Poland this year signed a $1.4 billion deal to buy 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks, as well as another $10 billion agreement to buy High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems produced by Lockheed Martin; Slovakia is buying F-16 fighters, while Romania is in talks to buy F-35s.

Those deals are raising fears in Europe over whether they can wean themselves off of U.S. defense suppliers. In one example, France and Germany worry about Spain’s intentions as it kicks the tires on F-35s while also being a partner in developing the European Future Combat Air System jet fighter.

But the need to restock weapons depots and continue shipping materiel to Ukraine is urgent, and after decades of contraction, the Continent’s defense industry is having a difficult time adjusting.

“Our European allies and partners, they’ve never experienced anything like this,” said a senior U.S. Defense Department official, referring to the spasm of spending brought on by Russia’s invasion. The official was granted anonymity to discuss the situation. “They don’t yet have the defense production authorities they need [to move quickly] and they’ve really been looking to us to try to get a handle on how they can increase production, and I think they’re learning a lot from us.”

To help Europe get there, the United States has expanded the number of bilateral security supply arrangements it has with foreign partners since the Russian invasion, signing new agreements with Latvia, Denmark, Japan and Israel since October. These allow countries to more quickly and easily sell and trade defense-related goods and services.

The Biden administration also signed an administrative arrangement with the European Union in late April to establish working groups on supply-chain issues, while giving both sides a seat at the table in internal meetings at the European Defence Agency and the Pentagon.

But there are limits to how far and how fast both sides are able and willing to go.

In the near term, capacity issues and political will means the rhetorical sea change in EU military spending is unlikely to make a huge dent in U.S. military industrial policy.

While the past 18 months have seen a huge spike in defense budgets — Germany announced a  special debt-financed fund worth €100 billion after the Russian invasion of Ukraine; Poland’s defense expenditure is set to reach 4 percent of GDP this year — EU-wide projects are facing significant headwinds. European companies say they need longer lead times and long-term contracts to make needed investments.

“You need that visibility and certainty to make those investments. We’re in a chicken game between governments and industry — who are the first ones that are putting the money on the table,” said Lucie Béraud-Sudreau, director of the military expenditure and arms production program at SIPRI.

Ultimately, the global defense boom means that there should be plenty of military spending to go around, at least in the short term as countries rush to prove their worth to their NATO and EU allies and the Russian threat remains acute.

Brussels to Berlin: We’ll find a way to save the car engine

Press play to listen to this article

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

On the future of the internal combustion engine, Germany has gotten its own way, again.

The European Commission and Germany’s Transport Ministry announced a deal Saturday morning that commits the EU executive to figuring out a legal way to allow the sale of new engine-installed cars running exclusively on synthetic e-fuels even after a mandate comes into force requiring sales of only zero-emission vehicles from 2035.

“We have found an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars,” the Commission’s Green Deal chief Frans Timmermans said on Twitter. “We will work now on getting the CO2 standards for cars regulation adopted as soon as possible.”

The deal heads off a row over car legislation that was all-but-agreed until Germany, along with a small club of allies, slammed on the brakes just days before formal final approval on a law that is the centerpiece of the EU’s green agenda.

Timmermans said the Commission would “follow up swiftly” with “legal steps” to turn a non-binding annex to the law, introduced originally at the insistence of Europe’s car-making titan Germany, into a concrete workaround allowing new vehicles running on e-fuels, which do emit some CO2, to be sold post-2035.

As a first step, the Commission has agreed to carve out a new category of e-fuel-only vehicles inside the existing Euro 6 automotive rulebook and then integrate that classification into the contentious CO2 standards legislation that mandates the 2035 phase-out date for sales of new combustion-engine vehicles.

The terms of the final deal from Timmermans’ cabinet chief Diederik Samsom, seen by POLITICO, say the Commission will reopen the text of the engine-ban law if EU lawmakers manage to stop the introduction of a technical annex that would make space for e-fuels alongside the agreed CO2 standards. Reopening the proposed law’s text is a move that is fundamentally opposed by the European Parliament and green-minded countries.

The crux of the standoff was that Germany demanded binding legal language that would ensure the Commission would find a way to satisfy Berlin’s demands even if the European Parliament, or the courts, moved to block any tweaks or legal annexes to the 2035 zero-emissions legislation covering cars and vans.

In the statement, Samsom promised the Commission will publish its full e-fuels proposal as a so-called delegated act this fall. In practice, that means the original 2035 legislation will pass at first — offering the European Commission a critical win — but it sets up a future fight over the technical additions needed to satisfy Berlin.

“The law that 100 percent of cars sold after 2035 must be zero emissions will be voted unchanged by next Tuesday,” said Pascal Canfin, the French liberal lawmaker spearheading the file in the assembly. “Parliament will decide in due course on the Commission’s future proposals on e-fuels.”

    Engine endgame

The deal means energy ministers can sign off on the original 2035 proposal during a meeting on Tuesday given that Berlin now has assurances that its demands will be met. In advance, EU ambassadors will review the bilateral deal between Brussels and Berlin on Monday, an EU diplomat said.

The agreement caps a decade of German pushback on EU automotive emissions rule-making.

In 2013, then-Chancellor Angela Merkel intervened late to water down previous iterations of car emission standards legislation, securing tweaks critical to the country’s hulking automotive industry.

The deal means Germany has effectively dropped its last-minute opposition to the car engine ban law | Sean Gallup/Getty Images

Since the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal, most carmakers have shifted their investments toward electric vehicles, but some industry interests, notably high-end carmakers such as Porsche and Germany’s web of combustion engine component makers, have sought to save traditional gas guzzlers from the clutches of a de facto EU sales ban.

Figuring out a final workaround on e-fuels in the 2035 legislation will still take some months, given that technical standards haven’t yet been clarified for setting out a “robust and evasion-proof” system for selling cars that can only be fuelled on synthetic alternatives to petrol and diesel, according to Samsom’s statement.

The timeline is already clear in Berlin’s perspective. “We want the process to be completed by autumn 2024,” said the German Transport Ministry, which is run by the country’s Free Democratic Party. The FDP, the most junior in Germany’s three-way governing coalition, had wanted fixed legal language to guarantee a loophole for e-fuels, which can theoretically be CO2-neutral but which wouldn’t normally comply with the emissions legislation since they do still emit tailpipe pollutants.

With the FDP’s popularity tumbling, the car policy row with Brussels has been a popular talking point in German media over recent weeks. One survey reports that 67 percent of respondents are against the engine ban legislation. Ahead of national elections in late 2025, the FDP is betting on driver-friendly policies such as e-fuels, new road construction initiatives and a block on the implementation of a national highway speed limit, to raise its profile.

Market watchers don’t anticipate e-fuels to offer much in the way of a mass-market alternative to electric vehicles, given that they are costly to produce and don’t exist in commercial volumes today. A study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research reports that even if all global e-fuel production was allocated to German consumers, the output would only meet a tenth of national demand in the aviation, maritime and chemical sectors by 2035.

“E-fuels are an expensive and massively inefficient diversion from the transformation to electric facing Europe’s carmakers,” said Julia Poliscanova from the green group Transport & Environment.

    Auto politics

Despite not being on the formal agenda, the issue dominated discussions on the sidelines of this week’s summit of EU leaders in Brussels. A deal between Brussels and Berlin was only struck at 9 p.m. on Friday, hours after leaders left the EU capital, before being formally announced on social media early Saturday.

“The way is clear,” said German Transport Minister Volker Wissing in announcing the agreement. “We have secured opportunities for Europe by keeping important options open for climate-neutral and affordable mobility.”

The deal means Germany has effectively dropped its last-minute opposition to the car engine ban law, collapsing a blocking minority of Italy, Poland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic that had put a roadblock in front of final ratification by ministers of the deal reached last October between the three EU institutions.

It remains unclear whether Italy’s attempts to find a separate workaround for biofuels — promoted personally by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the summit — also succeeded. However, without Berlin’s support, Rome doesn’t have a way to block the legislation.

German Transport Minister Volker Wissing | Maja Hitij/Getty Images

Responses to the Commission working up a bespoke fix for its biggest member country on otherwise agreed legislation were generally negative, with many arguing the e-fuels issue is a diversion.

“The opening for e-fuels does not mean a significant change for the transformation to electric cars,” said Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, a professor at the Center for Automotive Research in Duisburg. He said the Commission’s dealmaking raised “new investment uncertainties” that undermined the bloc’s efforts to catch up with China, the world’s leading producer of electric vehicles.

Still, most are just happy that the combustion engine row is ended, for now.

“It is good that this impasse is over,” said German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, who backed the original 2035 deal without a reference to e-fuels. “Anything else would have severely damaged both confidence in European procedures and in Germany’s reliability inside European politics,” the minister said in a statement.

WHILL, Inc., a leading developer and service provider of electric mobility chairs, announced today the first permanent installation in North America of its autonomous mobility service at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.

An estimated one in three travelers will require some form of assistance by the year 2038, making it difficult for airports to meet the additional demands that come with accommodating their needs1. The WHILL autonomous mobility service relieves airlines of fulfilling wheelchair push demands and allows airline passengers to travel more freely by autonomously transporting them to their gates.

After the user selects their destination on a touch screen, the WHILL autonomous power chair proceeds to transport the passenger safely and reliably to the desired gate. The service covers the entire route from check-in counter to security checkpoint, and then to the departure gate to provide a seamless travel experience.

The WHILL autonomous mobility service has been tested during several development trials at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport since 2019 with excellent results.

“We’re excited to see our partnership with WHILL continue to grow to help meet the evolving needs of travelers,” said Nick Hays, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “The addition of their innovative autonomous mobility device as a fully available service at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport is another example of our commitment to providing a more accessible and inclusive environment.”

The WHILL Autonomous Service is just one part of WHILL’s ecosystem designed to improve mobility and reduce barriers across a full spectrum of assistance levels needed by customers, from staying mobile in their home to traveling and navigating public spaces. In addition to autonomous drive technology, WHILL offers the award-winning Model C2 and Model F for full-time use, plus manual drive rentals for malls, museums, multi-day vacation rentals and a variety of other destinations.

“Accessibility is a global issue,” said Kerry Renaud, CEO of WHILL North America. “WHILL products and services are uniquely designed to reduce barriers and improve the quality of life for our customers, and the partnership with Winnipeg Richardson International Airport will influence and expand mobility globally by raising the standard of reliable accessibility in public spaces.”

Previous trials of the WHILL autonomous service in U.S. airports have included Atlanta, San Jose, and Grand Rapids. WHILL plans to announce partnerships with additional airports in North America in 2023.

Blast on Russia bridge to Crimea threatens Moscow supply route

Press play to listen to this article

KYIV — The Kerch bridge in Crimea was partially destroyed by an explosion Saturday morning, in a strategic and symbolic blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his campaign against Ukraine.

The damage to the bridge, which comes as Ukrainian advances continue to reclaim occupied territories from Moscow’s forces, endangers a crucial route for Russian military supplies to support its forces in southern Ukraine.

Two spans of the road portion of the bridge collapsed as a result of “an accident,” according to Sergei Aksyonov, the Russia-installed head of the Crimea administration. “Fuel tanks have also caught fire,” Aksyonov said in a post on social media.

Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee said that a truck was blown up on the bridge, according to Russian media. As a result of the blast, “a partial collapse” of two spans occurred, it said. Russia’s Investigative Committee said three people were killed in the explosion, according to media reports.

According to videos and photos posted Saturday morning by eyewitnesses, several fuel tankers were on fire on the rail part of the bridge, while at least one road span had partially collapsed into the waters of the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

“As soon as the fire is extinguished, it will be possible to assess damage to the bridge and pillars, and it will be possible to talk about the timing of the restoration of traffic,” Aksyonov said.

The head of the Russian-installed regional parliament in Crimea, Vladimir Konstantinov, blamed the damage to the bridge on “Ukrainian vandals,” according to Russian media.

Kyiv hasn’t claim responsibility for the damage to the bridge, but Ukrainian officials celebrated the blast on social media. Referring to a flagship Russian vessel sunk by Kyiv earlier this year, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense tweeted: “The guided missile cruiser Moskva and the Kerch Bridge – two notorious symbols of Russian power in Ukrainian Crimea – have gone down. What’s next in line, russkies?”

The Kerch bridge, which connects Crimea with the Russian mainland, was opened personally by Putin with much fanfare in 2018, after Moscow seized the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014. The construction of the bridge was slammed by both Kyiv and its Western backers as illegal at the time.

Since the start of the Kremlin’s war on Ukraine in late February, the bridge has been crucially important for the transfer of manpower, weapons and fuel to Russian units fighting Ukrainian troops in southern Ukraine.

Putin on Saturday ordered a government commission to investigate “the emergency on the Crimean bridge” and officials have been dispatched to the scene, Russian media reported, citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

According to Aksyonov, ferry service will start operating on Saturday in place of the damaged bridge.

Over the past months, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly declared Kyiv’s plans to target the Crimea bridge. In April, Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, said in a radio interview that the bridge will “definitely” be hit, if Kyiv gets an opportunity. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov branded Danilov’s statement as “announcing a possible terrorist attack.”

After the partial collapse of the Kerch bridge Saturday morning, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, said in a tweet that “everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled.”

Zelenskyy, in an address Friday night, said Ukraine has taken back more than 2,400 square kilometers of its territory occupied by Russia. “This week alone, our soldiers liberated 776 square kilometers of territory in the east of our country and 29 settlements,” Zelenskyy said.

Kyiv vows Russian troops will ‘simply be exterminated’ after Putin annexes Ukrainian territory

Press play to listen to this article

KYIV — Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions, announced by President Vladimir Putin on Friday, will not affect Kyiv’s resolve to free them with military force, said an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“For our plans, [Russia’s annexation] doesn’t matter,” Mykhailo Podolyak told POLITICO, speaking before the signing ceremony in Moscow orchestrated by Putin. The Russian leader railed at the United States and the West, denounced the Ukrainian government, and warned: “We will protect our land using all our forces.”

The annexation comes on a day when Ukrainian soldiers have reportedly encircled thousands of Russian troops near the city of Lyman in eastern Ukraine, and a couple of weeks after a successful counteroffensive that pushed Russian forces from the region near Kharkiv — the country’s second city.

The nation “should liberate all its territories,” Podolyak said.

Ukrainian troops have “likely nearly completed” the encirclement of Russian troops in Lyman in the Donetsk region, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank.

“Virtually all approaches, logistics routes of the enemy, through which it delivered ammunition and manpower, are already under our fire control,” Serhiy Cherevatyi, a spokesman for the Ukrainian eastern military grouping, told Ukrainian television.

Moscow has not commented on the situation.

Podolyak also shrugged off Putin’s announcement of a “partial” mobilization of reservists last week, with thousands called up and thousands more fleeing the country.

“The mobilization shows that Russia has run out of a professional army,” Podolyak said, adding: “This army is being replaced by absolutely untrained people. A living resource has been thrown onto the front lines, and it will simply be exterminated.”

“This may sound paradoxical, but it’s actually to our advantage that Russia has announced this mobilization,” he said. “This shows the people of Russia that the country really is at war, that it’s not doing very well in this war, and that the Russians themselves will be the ones to pay the price.”

The mobilization is prompting Kyiv to call for more weapons from its Western allies.

“For example, 100 more 155mm-caliber missiles would solve the problem, if you will excuse me for putting it that way, of additional human resources being utilized by Russia on the field of battle,” Podolyak said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed four Ukrainian territories after holding sham referendums | Kay Nietfeld/Pool/AFP via Getty Images

On Wednesday, U.S. authorities announced a $1.1 billion arms package for Ukraine, including 18 additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

“Russia now has one card left to play in this war: nuclear weapons. Against a non-nuclear nation. That’s absurd,” Podolyak said.

The worry is how Putin will react to Ukraine’s efforts to liberate the territories seized by Russia, and if the Kremlin will see that as an attack on Russia itself. However, Ukrainian attacks on Crimea and even strikes into Russia proper over the course of the seven-month war have not led to such a retaliation.

Last week, Putin warned: “We doubtlessly will use all weapons resources at our disposal … This is not a bluff.”

U.S. President Biden has warned Putin of the consequences of using nuclear or chemical weapons. Podolyak wants those warnings to be “clearly communicated” to Moscow and for “very tough retaliation measures aimed at the destruction of Russia’s defense infrastructure” to follow.

“For instance, Russia’s naval forces in the Black Sea could be completely destroyed,” he said. “This would be a proportionate response to Russia’s attempt to launch a tactical nuclear strike against the combat positions of the Ukrainian army.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine “will keep doing its job” to liberate its territory, he said.

“We have no other options when it comes to ending the war properly. We can’t leave some enclave [under Russian occupation] or create a new dividing line,” he said, referring to the frozen conflict that followed Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the Donbas war in 2014-2015.

  • Shaw’s Sponsors Future in Sight’s 15th Annual Walk for Sight

Shaw’s Sponsors Future in Sight’s 15th Annual Walk for Sight

    Press Release

    updated: May 15, 2018

Future In Sight, formerly known as New Hampshire Association for the Blind, is pleased to announce that Shaw’s is this year’s Walk for Sight Event Sponsor.

“We are thrilled to have the support of Shaw’s as our Event Sponsor for this year’s Walk. In addition to this generous sponsorship, 17 Shaw’s stores have registered teams to walk with us on Saturday, June 2 in downtown Concord. The individual Shaw’s teams, led by each store’s director, have their competitive game faces on and are competing against one another for the largest team with the most money raised. So it can be accurately said that Shaw’s ‘walks the Walk!’ said Lucinda Williams, Director of Development for Future In Sight. This 3K Walk is Future In Sight’s largest fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the Walk help the Organization provide vision rehabilitation programs and services to people who are blind and visually impaired in New Hampshire. The Walk is also the state’s largest gathering for awareness, support, and advocacy for people who are blind and visually impaired.  Last year, almost 500 walkers participated.

One of the primary reasons I approached Shaw’s about partnering with us for this Walk was because I personally noticed the above-and-beyond measures they take to not only hire people challenged with a disability but also to make grocery shopping accessible for the visually impaired through the shopping service program.

Lucinda Williams, Director of Development, Future In Sight

“We are pleased to support such a worthy cause and Future In Sight as it works to help 4,000 people this year alone. At Shaw’s, we know these people live and work in the communities where our stores are located.  We want our communities to know we truly care,” says Daniel Moore, District Manager of Shaw’s.

In addition to Shaw’s notable record of hiring those who are disabled, Shaw’s also offers a shopping service where an employee will accompany a blind or visually impaired person as they tend to their essential food needs. “One of the primary reasons I approached Shaw’s about partnering with us for this Walk was because I personally noticed the above-and-beyond measures they take to not only hire people challenged with a disability but also to make grocery shopping accessible for the visually impaired through the shopping service program,” states Williams. “I wasn’t surprised when Daniel responded with a strong ‘yes, let’s do this partnership’ because the company’s actions speak louder than words.”

“You may have a friend, neighbor or relative struggling with day to day tasks because of sight loss. Making people aware of this incredible Organization is just another way we can help advocate for and promote awareness of the needs and challenges of the visually-impaired community,” states Moore, “we hope to see hundreds of people at the Walk to share the message that there is a Future In Sight.”

Walk for Sight registration begins at 9:00 a.m. on June 2, with the Walk starting promptly at 11:00 a.m. Participants are encouraged, however, to pre-register online now at www.futureinsight.org or by phone at (603) 565-2424. Registration is $20 per walker, $5 for those under 12.  Registration includes an event t-shirt, lunch, and fun activities at the McGreal Sight Center.
