    It took a while—and over 1000 runway images—to finally wrap our heads around the contents of fashion month. For the first time in a long time, the runways this fall/winter season had an almost tangible air of newness to them, with a handful of designer debuts—including Daniel Lee at Burberry and Ludovic de Saint Sernin at Ann Demeulemeester—and a number of veterans successfully refreshing their brands in the eyes of the fashion community. Most substantial, though, were the trends presented by these designers and so many more, who managed to deliver some of the most unexpected groupings we’ve seen in ages that somehow still fit within the current zeitgeist. 

    Tory Burch, Miuccia Prada for Prada and Miu Miu, Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent, and Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta all seemed to grasp what so many have tried and failed to in the past—that is, what women actually wear. In a relatable move, Prada sent models down the runway at Miu Miu looking intentionally frazzled, having remembered to wear stockings and outerwear but forgotten pants and a hairbrush.

    Elsewhere, Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent collection displayed a contrasting glimpse of the female form, one that’s strict in its put-togetherness, utilizing intensely strong tailoring and powerful silhouettes to get his message across. Finally, at Loewe, Ferragamo, and Jil Sander, our desire for comfort played out in the form of furry footwear, fashionable security blankets, and apparel fitted with oversize hoods.

    When Lyst published their Q3 report on the top luxury brands of 2023, it was none other than Miu Miu who knocked Loewe off its pedestal to claim the number-one slot. It’s not hard to see why. The brand has been behind some of the most viral fashion moments and must-have items for several years straight and its established itself as the go-to source material for fashion insiders and students alike. In other words, we all just want to be Miu Miu girls.

    Let’s talk about footnotes. By the way, I love footnotes as a concept. I love footnotes as a tool. I love footnotes stylistically. I’m a Virgo and a nerd, so of course, they speak to my joy, but talk to me about your relationship to footnotes because they are such a critical part of this book.

    Interestingly enough, I’m a Pisces, and Virgos and Pisces are sort of antithetical to each other.  I feel that I have organization, but to a Virgo, it seems like chaos. I think footnotes have the same application, in that I wish I could say it was the organization of thoughts, but really, it’s that every single road that I created in this city has a side street and an alley and then a sewer. That’s just the way that my mind works. It’s not linear. I wish that it was so that I could find peace. I would constantly have these interjections that I believed in my heart of hearts were essential to essays, but then in the body of the essays, they would totally disrupt the flow. It’s like, “How do you not talk about Miss Claudette when you’re talking about Rosa Parks?” The footnotes were this reprieve where I could include essays that were too short for the full book, or they were half ideas or footnotes that were historically important but not necessarily rhetorically important in the literal body of the text in a way that did them justice. … If you don’t care, you could read the essay start to finish and not have anything disrupted, but the footnotes are important to my own logic.

    To me, it’s such a thoughtful way of presenting information and ideas because you are giving a “choose your own adventure” aspect to the reading process. What are you in the mood for? How deep do you want to go? It actually feels quite generous of you.

    I used to read encyclopedias as a kid, the Britannica, front to back, and I would retain that information, and it’s all these fun facts. That’s where I come from as a reader—just being like, “What fun facts can I share at a dinner party?”

    I sometimes think about the youngs coming up in this day and age and not having the physical encyclopedia in their house, and I think they’re really missing out in one area. Yes, they have all of the information in the world on their phone, but there’s something about an old-school encyclopedia.

    One-hundred percent. Also, I grew up with dial-up internet. You’d get a phone call, and you’d be like, “Nooooo!” You’d have to start Dexter’s Lab game all over again. It was so boring. I don’t remember how we entertained ourselves if not for having those old-school history books, encyclopedias, and finding things. Just finding things and the why. 

    Do you have a favorite essay? Does it change?

    I don’t have a favorite essay. They’re so different. It’s like picking a favorite child. Everyone has one, but they wouldn’t say. It depends more on the mood. I’m more surprised when individuals talk to me about what essays they specifically connected with. That, to me, is actually more exciting. When I did a podcast with Dua Lipa, she was the first person to ever talk to me about my book, and she really connected with the “WikiFeet” essay. That was surprising to me. I guess it makes total sense. You also have one, wow. When I was talking to my friend Chris Murphy at Vanity Fair, he really connected to the affirmative action essay. He went to Princeton and boarding school as well, so we could connect in that space of our lives, and we’ve been friends for years. But it was just really fascinating to see what friends, new and old, what really touched them. 

    While you might not have a favorite per se, is there one that you enjoy reading out loud more than others?

    “WikiFeet” is the essay that I performed live for years and then wrote it in my book and continued. I did a speech at Harvard Law School, and I read that essay. It was wild. I love HLS. I love ivy—you know, ivy towers.

    When the industry cuts deep, try a Miu Miu bandage. In the fashion house’s spring show during Paris Fashion Week on Oct. 3, models walked the runway wearing unusually visible bandages on their feet. The designer bandages wrapped around toes and heels in a wide variety of vivid colors, peeking out from beneath embellished sandals as models made their way across the catwalk. “We got Band-Aids today. Show accessories — this is a gift,” Gigi Hadid said in a TikTok captured by Dazed. “It’s so sweet and kind, I love it. It’s the best day ever.”

    Others, like fashion editor Stella Bugbee, had a slightly different interpretation, explaining that this kind of “intentional styling,” however discreet, might carry a bigger message. “It’s the end of fashion month and these feet have done a lot of walking in uncompromising shoes,” Bugbee wrote on her Instagram Stories. “Nice to see this sly little bit of intentional styling. It also happened to work with the aesthetics of the show.”

    Sasha Payton, a model and content creator who walked in this year’s New York Fashion Week, provided more context about the industry’s complicated relationship with footwear. “A season or two ago, we saw so many models falling, or their shoes breaking, or them just removing their shoes altogether,” Payton tells POPSUGAR. Although brands make shoes for their models, they don’t always know the exact sizes for every person who ends up being cast, as Payton explains. That’s not to mention the heels models often wear for their many castings. “Even if they’re comfortable, heels are heels, and after a while, being in the streets, running up and down the stairs of the subway, it starts to ache.”

    This comes shortly after a photo of a model’s blistered heels went viral following a repost from National Geographic on Instagram. Captured by Dina Litovsky, the photograph was taken backstage at a Jason Wu runway show in 2019, and it honed in on a model’s bright red heels, practically screaming out in pain from beneath slingback heels. “Over the years, I have witnessed models with feet that were calloused and covered in band-aids — the bruises resulting from a combination of a grueling schedule and the shoes themselves,” Litovsky wrote in a Sept. 20 post.

    Following the discourse, there was hardly a heel in sight at the Miu Miu show, letting the colorful bandages take center stage. “It’s obviously very intentional,” Payton says. “Like let’s make it fun. Let’s do the whole colorful thing and make it an accessory because this is the reality; sometimes bruises and all of this stuff are a thing, so we might as well make it functional.”

    To her point, in its show notes, Miu Miu explained the intention to explore the “rationale of beauty,” juxtaposing more contemporary styles with classic prototypes in fashion. “Garments devised for specific purpose, functions, and events are remixed in unanticipated combinations,” Miu Miu wrote. “A maillot de bain with a cocktail dress, a petticoat with a blazer.” Or even a bandage at Paris Fashion Week. While it’s not enough to completely cover up fashion’s wounded past with footwear, we have to admit it’s certainly a creative start.

    No single pair of boots has taken up residence in the brains of practically every person in fashion in recent years quite as significantly as Miu Miu’s moto boots, which the brand debuted in its F/W 22 collection. Mixed among penny loafers and the now-viral satin Mary Jane flats were a variety of heavy-duty, distressed leather boots in brown and black with a round toe, an ankle strap secured by large metal fasteners, and buckles up the leg that brought the thick material together on either side. Similar to the other footwear they were accompanied by on the runway, attendees and digital onlookers alike were instantly smitten.

    As a result, over the past year, many brands have hopped aboard the moto-boot train, with options arriving from Steve Madden, Mango, and more. But none has gotten me quite as excited as the $99 pair I just discovered on Nordstrom.com.     We’re only halfway through fashion month, yet one trend is already shaping up to be the favorite of the entire calendar: capri pants. The not-too-short, not-too-long bottoms made a surprising comeback during New York Fashion Week, with appearances at Tory Burch, Phillip Lim, Mirror Palais, and Sandy Liang. Already, we’ve gotten a glimpse at the style’s first celebrity endorsement. 

    This week, Bella Hadid was spotted on a helipad in Manhattan after arriving in the city alongside her brother Anwar. For the trip, she chose an oversize button-down shirt, a white tank top, satin Miu Miu ballet flats, and *the* trend of the spring/summer 2024 runway season, a pair of white capri pants. On the accessory front, she added a burgundy satchel, a Y2K headband, and thin hoop earrings. 

    It should come as no surprise that the supermodel is the first to take the formerly outdated capri-pant trend out for a test-drive. After all, she’s known for her love of early-aughts styling and testing the boundaries when it comes to street style.     When Gerber’s not putting her comedy chops to the test alongside the greats, you’ll likely find her curled up somewhere with a good book. It’s not out of the norm for her to be rotating between three or four at a time—usually a memoir, a novel, a short story, or a poetry book. She is an enthusiastic consumer of literature, one who will happily ham it up with you about her latest book finds. Recent favorites include Acts of Service by Lillian Fishman, Lucky Dogs by Helen Schulman, and Terminal Boredom by Izumi Suzuki. 

    “When people think of Kaia Gerber’s Instagram, [I don’t think] they expect to go on and basically see me only talking about books,” she says. Looking for a place to connect with others and start purposeful conversations, Gerber created her own online book club. Each month, she shares a new book with her 9.6 million followers, inviting either the author or a special guest to join her live. “I decided, Why not use this book club as a way to highlight authors and encourage people to read but also as a door or window into conversations that are really difficult to have?” she says. For this reason, she’s quite particular about the titles she chooses each month, basing it on the kind of dialogue she wants to spark. For August, Gerber hosted a live with author Alex Auder to discuss her memoir Don’t Call Me Home, a story that tackles being raised by a Warhol superstar and the intimate bonds of mother-daughter relationships. “I get to have these really incredible authors or people who just have so much insight into these topics. I am a very curious person in my life, and I think it lives in my book club as well,” she adds.

    So where does modeling fit into all this? It’s obvious Gerber is leaning more into acting these days, but she is quick to clarify it’s not one or the other. The two can live harmoniously in her life. For the moment, she’s enjoying being more selective with the fashion projects she commits to. “I have fun doing it now because I get to come in and do really special, meaningful things with people that I have really deep, wonderful relationships with,” she says. The Valentino Haute Couture show is one example. Working with longtime friend Hedi Slimane as the face of Celine is another. “I love working with Celine because I really feel like it’s the coolest version of myself, and it’s not at all how cool I am in real life,” she says. Even her fashion choices on the red carpet, for which she collaborates with stylist Danielle Goldberg, are meticulously selected and have intent behind them.

    Dua Lipa proves less is more with her latest summer ensemble. On Aug. 27, the singer looked ready to hit the runway in a pair of designer micro shorts made for summer vacation. The $3,600 Miu Miu shorts featured a cheeky, high-cut silhouette and a matching suede belt fitted with a gold-tone buckle. Reminiscent of the hot pants trend of the 1970s (and later the ’90s), Lipa’s look was the ultimate nod to retro summer style. “Sun bum,” she captioned photos of her outfit on Instagram.

    Lipa isn’t the only celebrity to experiment with the teeny-tiny shorts trend in recent months: Billie Eilish and Millie Bobby Brown both previously gave the trend their stamp of approval. Something about Lipa’s choice to style the shorts so casually, though, accentuated the dramatic silhouette. She paired the bottoms with a ribbed Miu Miu tank top in ivory and silver jewelry, including a rhinestone necklace, a delicate watch, and multiple cuff earrings.

    A day later, Lipa shared photos from a family cookout on her Instagram Stories.     It’s no secret that I consider Miuccia Prada and everything she designs to be my sartorial North Star, and this fall is no different. In fact, if anything, I’m only doubling down on my infatuation with the Italian designer and specifically with everything she put out in Miu Miu’s fall/winter 2023 collection, from reinvented staples like grey cardigans to experimental items like sheer pencil skirts.

    It doesn’t take an insider’s knowledge of fashion to see that Miu Miu has been the number one brand to set viral trends, though. Nearly every runway of the past two years has given birth to at least one season-defining trend, whether it be the pleated mini skirts from spring ’22 or the satin ballet flats from fall ’22.

    But, anyone who follows trends regularly knows that as easy as it is to fall in love with a fabulous runway piece on sight, it’s also easy to become heartbroken when you realize it’s far too pricey for your budget. As much as we all wish we could be Miu Miu girlies, sometimes it’s just not always accessible (unless you’re shopping second-hand), so being able to find pieces that hit on the overall aesthetic is essential. 

    Of course, finding pieces that do just that is a skill set of its own—while I’m not one to brag, I think I’m pretty skilled at it as an editor. So, I’ve dug to round up 25 affordable fall fashion finds under $220 that give Miu Miu vibes, IMHO.

    Kendall Jenner’s evolution from reality TV star on The Kardashians to one of the most sought-after models in the fashion industry is evident from her Harper’s Bazaar September 2023 cover. As part of the historic publication’s Icons portfolio that spotlights game-changers who are reshaping the culture (like Doja Cat and Teyana Taylor), Jenner proves she’s made a name for herself outside of the Kardashian noise. She’s FWRD’s creative director, 818 Tequila founder, Calvin Klein campaign star, and, as mom Kris states to Bazaar, “Her superpower is knowing when it’s too much or when it’s not enough.”

    The 27-year-old embodies that notion with her cover look, styled by Beat Bolliger. It’s got all the standard components of a typical outfit — except pants. Casually nailing the Hollywood-famous no-pants trend, Jenner models her sequin gold Miu Miu briefs over sheer black tights, finished with a nude knit turtleneck and slingback kitten heels. Her accessories include a gold cuff necklace and a thick watch from Panthère de Cartier. She rocks natural makeup, and her hair is styled into her signature slicked-back bun. She also wears additional looks, from an all-burgundy parka, bodysuit, and leather skirt by Marc Jacobs to a denim-on-denim Dior ensemble that features an oversize jacket, pants, black butterfly belt, and silver Cartier jewelry.

    During her interview, Jenner touches heavily on her self-growth journey, having been in therapy for almost two years. “I meet with my therapist once a week, so every week I’m learning something new. I’m constantly evolving and just excited to do that,” she tells the publication. And while she’s no longer hiding in the shadows of her older sisters Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé, the young star credits her family for her solid identity. “I feel like I am coming into my womanhood…and having so many strong women around me has helped shape my sense of worth.”

    As someone known for pushing bold trends, this isn’t the first time Jenner has gone pants-less. For the 2023 Met Gala, she famously wore a high-cut sequin bodysuit with dramatic sleeves by Marc Jacobs. She’s also developed an affinity for naked dresses and thong-inspired pieces — especially thongkini swimsuits. Most recently, Jenner’s enjoyed a style streak with boyfriend Bad Bunny, as the duo coordinate their outfits on many occasions. They wore matching snakeskin boots at a Lakers game and all-black leather outfits for a date night in May.

    Back in March, Wade wore a full Miu Miu look, complete with those controversial thong boots, which she completely pulled off, to the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. The event was fresh on the heels of her runway debut in Miu Miu’s fall 2023 show during Paris Fashion Week.
