Puppy dumping prompts warning from Mission Viejo officials

Ten newborn puppies were dumped outside Mission Viejo’s animal care center, prompting city officials to remind the public they can find homes for any unwanted pets and to take advantage of its services.

The puppies were chucked out of a vehicle at about 2:30 a.m. July 24 and abandoned in a puppy pool wedged in some bushes near the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center, according to city spokeswoman Kelly Tokarski.

Hours later, a volunteer dog walker for the center spotted the 3-week-old puppies and the canines were immediately brought into the shelter to be nursed back to health, Tokarski said.

The puppies are with volunteer foster families, she added. It was “miraculous” that the puppies stayed together and weren’t attacked by a coyote overnight, Tokarski said.

Surveillance video showed the suspect who dumped the dogs, and the next day officials were able to track down the man, Tokarski said.

The mother of the puppies, Holly, was seized and reunited with her newborns, Tokarski said.

Holly is at the Animal Services Center, Tokarski said. All the dogs are in good health and will be available to adopt soon, she said. Any pet owner who wants to rid themselves of an animal has legal options, Tokarski said.

Even if the Animal Services Center is full officials have relationships with many organizations that can take them in, she added.

  • No timetable for reopening train service through San Clemente amid landslide cleanup

No timetable for reopening train service through San Clemente amid landslide cleanup

    [ad_1]

Train service between Orange and San Diego counties remains disrupted after a landslide in San Clemente with no timetable for reopening the tracks through the area, a spokesman for the regional rail authority said Saturday.

The Wednesday slope failure sent debris onto the tracks in the southern Orange County city, halting service the between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside stations, and stranding Metrolink and Surfliner passengers.

Efforts to repair the damage will continue through the weekend, said Metrolink spokesperson Scott Johnson, and has required the removal of two “large sections” of the Mariposa Pedestrian Bridge so that workers could access the affected hillside.

“Currently the removal of soil is taking place but they are doing so very methodically to ensure it doesn’t trigger an additional landslide,” he said.

This weekend, Metrolink trains will operate as far south as San Juan Capistrano. Beginning Monday, weekday trains will operate only as far as the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station. Metrolink is not offering alternative methods of transportation to stations that its trains are unable to access.

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train service is operating as far south as San Juan Capistrano, and buses are being used to ferry passengers between Irvine and San Diego, Johnson said.

The landslide is one of several recent ones to disrupt rail service in the area. Another in 2022 led to a six-month stoppage of full passenger service.

The weather forecast for next week could put a damper on the repair work in San Clemente. Casey Oswant, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service’s San Diego office said that precipitation is expected Thursday and Friday.

“It will shift to rainier, colder and windier” weather, she said.

  • Metrolink passenger car in Antelope Valley sprayed with bullets as gunfire erupts nearby

Metrolink passenger car in Antelope Valley sprayed with bullets as gunfire erupts nearby

    [ad_1]

A gunman sprayed a Metrolink train with bullets late Wednesday night at a Palmdale station, leaving two people hospitalized and a passenger car pocked with holes.

The shooting occurred near the platform where the northbound Antelope Valley Line train 229 was departing for Lancaster. Authorities said two people outside the train were hit as bullets also struck the passenger car.

The train’s passengers reported the gunfire, said Scott Johnson.

One of the shooting victims was wounded in a hip and the other in a calf, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Stowers. Their injuries were not life-threatening, he said. Emergency responders took them to a hospital for treatment.

Some media outlets said a woman injured her head while dodging gunfire, but Stowers was unable to confirm those reports.

Authorities had no information on what led to the incident or the identity of the shooter as detectives continued their investigation.

The train experienced a nearly one-hour delay as L.A. County sheriff’s deputies conducted the investigation. Metrolink has removed the bullet-damaged passenger car from service.

No other Metrolink services were affected.

When asked about safety concerns among passengers who take the Antelope Valley Line, Scott said, “Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and armed security officers regularly ride Antelope Valley Line trains to provide safety and security.”
