  • Brit ex-cop lifts lid on Tenerife underworld from Russian mafia to Brit gangs

Brit ex-cop lifts lid on Tenerife underworld from Russian mafia to Brit gangs

By Ellie Doughty, Foreign News Reporter

Monday July 8 marks three weeks since Jay Slater, a 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, vanished in Tenerife.

The apprentice bricklayer, who flew out to the popular holiday island for a rave festival with friends Lucy Law and Brad Page, has made headlines around the country.

On Sunday June 16 the three of them headed off to one of the events at Papagayo nightclub.

In the early hours of Monday 17 – Lucy and Brad were ready to head back to their hotel, but Jay wanted to keep partying.

It was then that he left the south of the island and headed to an Airbnb in the northwest with two British men.

The Sun revealed the identity of one of them – convicted drug dealer Ayub Qassim, who spent nine years behind bars in the UK.

For days it was thought that the second mystery man went by the name ‘Johnny Vegas’.

On Sunday former detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who is out in Tenerife investigating, said Qassim told him he is in fact the man behind the nickname ‘Johnny Vegas’.

We don’t yet know the identity of the second man – who remains a key part of the puzzle in Jay’s mysterious disappearance.

Qassim claims he drove Jay and the friend back to their accommodation and said they all went to sleep.

In the morning he offered to drive the teen back to the Los Cristianos resort after a nap, but Jay, hungry and tired, said he wanted to leave immediately.

Lucy, the last person to speak to Jay, claims she had a panicked call from him soon after he left the holiday let, telling her he was lost and thirsty, his phone was about to die and that he’d been cut by a cactus.

Jay had been seen by the owner of the Airbnb that morning wandering around near the Rural de Teno park – a mountainous region close-by.

He is believed to have been attempting the 11-hour trek back to his hotel, despite the alleged offer of a lift and more buses scheduled for the day.

It was there that his phone last pinged – and he hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Mark Williams-Thomas has claimed he left the Airbnb quickly, and was “scared”.

Bizarrely, Qassim says he was woken up that morning by a phone call from an unnamed friend of Jay, saying he was “in a ditch” somewhere and had been “cut by a cactus”.

Jay’s friend Lucy claimed to have “tracked down” the two men in the Airbnb after he vanished – quizzing them on the morning of Jay’s disappearance.

Some reports have suggested Lucy knew the two men, although it is not clear how.

She has dubbed his disappearance “weird and suspicious”.

Both men were questioned by Spanish cops on June 17 but quickly deemed “irrelevant” to the investigation and cleared to fly back to the UK.

Police spent almost two weeks searching for Jay in the Tenerife mountains, scouring a 2,000ft ravine, before calling it off on Sunday June 30.

Jay’s family have repeatedly slammed the Spanish investigation into his bizarre disappearance.

His uncle, Glen Duncan, is convinced of “third party involvement”.

And the teen’s devastated dad, Warren Slater, says “everything stinks”

He told The Sun: “My starting position, I’ve said this from day one, ask the two men who’ve taken him – and then start from there.”

A number of unanswered questions remain, over why Jay would have travelled so far with two older men he didn’t know, why said men would have taken him in, and why he braved the Tenerife mountains with no phone battery, water or heat protection for a day-long walk.

Jay’s dad says son may have been ‘heading for the sea’ when he vanished

JAY SLATER’S dad has said he thinks his son may have been heading towards the sea in Tenerife when he vanished on June 17.

Warren Slater, 58, has been scouring the mountains of north-west Tenerife himself since cops called off the active search last Sunday.

Jay’s last known location was in the Rural de Teno park, near a 2,000ft ravine with a steep drop into the sea around the holiday island.

A huge search team made up of police, volunteers, firefighters, drones, helicopters and sniffer dogs spent two weeks searching the sparse parkland nearby.

On Sunday June 30 local authorities axed the mammoth hunt, leaving Jay’s “angry” family to fend for themselves.

When asked if his son Jay could’ve been heading towards the sea on the morning he vanished, Warren told Manchester Evening News “Maybe”.

He said: “I’ve done this trail now twice. Every step I’ve took there’s been an opening.

“If you land on one of those cactus’ you’re not moving. Surely somebody’s gonna find you after two weeks.”

“It’s hundreds of square feet of this little bushy stuff. You can’t explain this to somebody unless they see it. You can take a photograph or film it, but until you’re here…”

Warren told MEN he has gone past sadness to anger over the police response to Jay’s disappearance.

He said: “I’ve gone past the sadness bit and I’m angry, if that makes any sense.

“I’m angry that nothing’s happened. If I left you here and then you just disappeared, do you not think police would be on my case?”

Apprentice bricklayer Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was last heard from on the morning of June 17 when he phoned a pal to tell her he was “lost in the middle of nowhere”.

He had gone back to a remote Airbnb with two British men on the northwest of island in the early hours before leaving later that morning.

After missing the bus, he started walking the 11-hour route back to his accommodation and disappeared in the rural north-west mountains.

On Monday, Jay’s parents pleaded with cops not to give up on the hunt for their son during a crunch meeting.

Detectives promised to probe any new tip-offs or information that comes in but stood firm in axing the active search.

A source close to the family revealed that the decision to cut off the search was the “nightmare scenario” Jay’s family were “dreading”.

Jay’s worried loved ones yesterday hit out at a TikTok creator who flew out to join the search but quit after claiming he’s “never had any money” from the GoFundMe.

Callum Fahim, who voluntarily travelled to Tenerife to help cops, claimed he’s left after being slammed with death threats and seeing no cash.

He flew over after contacting the 19-year-old’s mum, Debbie Duncan, online, according to Sky News.

But Fahim has now shared plans to return to the UK on Thursday.

The Slater family claim Debbie gave Callum £740 of her own money to fund his accommodation.

She says the TikToker turned “bitter” after they refused to give him more money.

Several search experts and a former detective have claimed the teen could be alive somewhere in the mountains.

Army reservist and search pro Juan García, believes cops called off the search for missing Jay too soon and previously warned he could be feeding on plants and rainwater to stay alive.

Ex-detective Hedges told The Sun: “It’s certainly possible. I think it’s important to let the investigation keep all lines of inquiry open until they’re proven to be not viable.

“It is quite a long time to survive without food. Depends on how much rain there is, as to whether there’s sufficient water.

“But certainly, one should always consider that possibility.”

Missing Brit’s last Snapchat shows him smiling – as pal reveals his final call

MISSING Brit teenager Jay Slater was all smiles in a chilling Snapchat clip sent the night before he shockingly vanished in Tenerife.

The 19-year-old from Lancashire was on the holiday island for a three-day music festival and had stayed the night with people he had just met before disappearing on his way home on Monday.

The Brit teen’s last known location was the Teno Rural Park

He vanished after making a desperate phone call at 8am on Monday morning to his long-time pal Lucy – saying he was in the “middle of nowhere”.

The frantic teen said he was lost, needed water and only had 1 per cent battery left on his mobile phone.

Jay told Lucy he “didn’t know where he was” and that he needed a drink of water before the call cut off.

His last known location was Teno Rural Park in the northwest of Tenerife – a popular hiking spot for tourists.

The new Snapchat clip now shows what Jay was wearing the night before he disappeared.

The footage was taken on Sunday night (June 16) by relative Isabelle Price near the Arona area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Jay was seen sporting a grey sports t-shirt with a light green strip on the shoulders and a black crossbody bag.

Now a desperate police search is underway, with cops and mountain rescue scouring the rugged landscape with drones and police helicopters.

Temperatures of up to 26 degrees celsius were recorded around the time Jay went missing.

A Civil Guard spokeswoman in Tenerife said: “A specialist Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group called the Greim has been mobilised.

“A police helicopter is also out and focusing on the area around the village of Masca.

“Other emergency services including firefighters have also been mobilised.

“Everything possible is being done to try to find the missing man.”

Jay’s mum flew out to Tenerife with Jay’s older brother on Tuesday to help with the frantic search.

Her partner Andy Watson, 63, said “Jay was no mug” but could have taken a wrong turn on an 8-hour walk back to his hotel.

He said Jay could have got even more lost during the 8-hour hike after losing his bearings.

Tenerife rocked by horrific murder as expat, 66, found dismembered with bag over her head & husband, 71, still missing

Speaking outside their home in Oswaldtwistle, Andy told The Sun: “It’s really worrying. It feels like a blur at the moment.

“Jay is very streetwise and he’s no mug but if it’s it was dark and he had no touch on his phone he could have gone the wrong way and become more lost than he was.”

Andy said Jay had disappeared after going to a rave with his pal Lucy.

He said: “Lucy contacted Debbie to say he’d gone back with two English lads he met at the party to their place for a few beers.

“Apparently, where they are staying is eight hours walking distance from where Jay is staying.”

However, Lucy said the people Jay met on Sunday night were staying in an apartment “in the middle of nowhere”.

She told Manchester Evening News: “He’s gone on a night out, he’s gone to a friend’s house, someone that he has met on holiday.

“One of the people he has met has hired a car out of here, so he’s driven them back to his apartment and Jay has gone there not realising how far away it is.

“He’s ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there.”

Jay was at the three-day NRG festival on the island of Tenerife

Debbie said from Tenerife that Jay was likely “disorientated” and didn’t realise it was an 8-hour walk back to his apartment in the south of the island.

Speaking from the south of the island where her son had been staying, she said: “I just think it was a question of him not knowing the island well enough.”

Debbie said her son “would have consumed a fair bit of alcohol” while at the festival – but he “seemed very compos mentis” before he went missing.

She said: “I know the last place he spoke to his friend Lucy from was in the mountains and I think the police have got a more precise location now.

“I imagine they’re also speaking to the people whose place he went back to.

“I imagine we will head up north nearer the spot Jay was when he disappeared.”

Debbie also said she has been bombarded with prank calls from trolls claiming to have kidnapped her son.

She told how Brits with “northern accents” have been calling her with hidden numbers, claiming they had her son captive and were keeping him because he owed them money.

She said: “I just don’t know why people would want to do things like this.

“I’ve been getting lots of prank calls. It’s sickening.

“People ringing me and saying they’ve got Jay because he owes them money.

“But it’s not putting me off… I want to keep this in the news because it’s going to increase the chances of Jay being found safe and well which is obviously what we’re praying for.”

She added: “I’m obviously beside myself with worry which is why I’ve flown out here with my eldest son to do anything we can to help.

“We’re just praying the police or someone finds Jay. I know there’s a mountain rescue team out and a helicopter.

“Nothing’s ever going to be enough when your youngest son’s gone missing, but it sounds as though the police here are taking this very seriously and doing the best job they can.”

Debbie also posted a plea for help on her Facebook asking for anyone in Tenerife to share a missing poster of Jay.

Local police and the British Embassy have been told about Jay’s disappearance with mountain rescue teams and a helicopter patrolling the park since Monday.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

BOUNDARY WATERS, Minn. — The body of one of the two canoeists who went missing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was recovered on Friday during a search near Curtain Falls.

Jesse Haugen, 41, was in a canoe that went over the falls on May 18. Officials found his body on Friday, but search efforts continue for the second missing canoeist, Reis Grams of Lino Lakes.

Officials with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office say two canoes went over the falls. Two people — one of whom was badly injured — were rescued from the area, which is near the Canadian border.

Crews will continue to search over the weekend, the sheriff’s office says, though flights in and out of the area will be unavailable until Monday. Weather and water conditions are large factors in the search efforts, and more rain is expected in hte next few days.

Between eight and 12 people are on the ground at a base camp, utilizing boats, canoes, drones, and K-9 teams to search the area.

Last week, Gov. Tim Walz announced that four crew members and a helicopter from the Minnesota National Guard would head to the Boundary Waters to help with the search.

Hiker found in Sloatsburg after going missing in Ringwood State Park in New Jersey

RINGWOOD, New Jersey (WABC) — A missing hiker at Ringwood State Park in New Jersey was located safely Monday afternoon.

Carol Heimbach, 63, survived an entire day and night lost in the woods along the New York/New Jersey border, going more than 24 hours missing.

Authorities believe Heimbach, from Wayne, New Jersey, entered the park for a hike near Skylands Manor on Sunday around 12:30 p.m.

The New Jersey State Park Police said the woman’s family first reached out to authorities after Heimbach didn’t return home for dinner, which initiated the search.

They say Heimbach’s vehicle was located in Parking Lot B of the state park just before 11 p.m., and a massive multi-agency search and rescue operation, using canines and aviation units, began a few hours later and continued overnight.

Authorities say they started receiving tips regarding the missing hiker around 9 a.m. Monday morning, after the Ringwood Police Department posted information on their Facebook page about the disappearance.

They say a homeowner’s Ring camera footage positively identified Heimbach.

“At 1 p.m. we received probably the most credible tip that we could expect, and it was based off a Ring cam in Scottsburg New York,” said George Fedorczyk of New Jersey State Park Police.

She was located safely around 1:30 p.m. in Sloatsburg, New York, and was then taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern.

Police say she was in good shape and suffered no apparent injuries but was “disoriented.”

She has since been reunited with family.

Her husband told Eyewitness News he’s grateful to police for keeping up the search.

Police say it’s not yet clear the circumstances that led the woman to go missing.

POLK COUNTY, Texas – A prayer service is being held Sunday for Audrii Cunningham, an 11-year-old girl from Livingston who’s been missing since Thursday.

Audrii disappeared Thursday morning, never making it on the school bus that morning. Her disappearance prompted an AMBER Alert and hundreds of volunteers poured into Livingston to help find her.

On Sunday morning, the VFW Post #8568 in Polk County is holding a prayer service for Audrii.

In a post on Facebook, the VFW said the service will happen at 12 p.m. at their facility in Livingston.

Officials and family members are searching for a pregnant Texas teenager who disappeared a day before she was scheduled to be induced.

The Leon Valley Police Department told CBS News that Savanah Nicole Soto, 18, was reported missing by her family and was last seen on Dec. 22.

Soto’s family told CBS News affiliate KENS that she was set to be induced on Saturday night and is a week past her due date. Police confirmed to CBS News that Soto had missed an appointment.

On Monday, the department issued a CLEAR alert, which are sent out for missing, kidnapped or abducted adults who are in immediate danger, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The CLEAR alert said that Soto, who is 5’1″ and has brown hair and eyes, was last seen at around 2 p.m. on Dec. 22. The alert said that she might be in a gray 2013 Kia Optima with temporary Texas tags.

KENS reported that the address where Soto was last seen was the apartment complex where she lived with her boyfriend, the father of her child. According to Soto’s family, no one has been able to contact the boyfriend since Soto disappeared.

Rachel Soto, the teen’s grandmother, said that her granddaughter was excited to welcome her baby and had a nursery decorated and a name picked out. The teen is expecting a baby boy, her grandmother said.

“She was thrilled and excited about being a mom … I pray to God every day, every minute, every second of the day we pray to God to bring her home, to bring her home safely because we need her home, to complete our family again,” Rachel Soto said.

KENS reported that police attempted to enter Soto’s apartment on Monday, but were unsuccessful. Soto’s friends and family organized a search of the area on Monday night as well.

Soto’s grandmother says the family just wants answers and to see the teen safely returned.

“It’s not normal, something’s not adding up here … I want answers, we all want answers,” Soto said. “She’s a beautiful girl … She’ll help anyone and I want someone to help us.”

  • I didn’t go to school but read HARRY POTTER books 20 times, says Alex Batty

I didn’t go to school but read HARRY POTTER books 20 times, says Alex Batty

MISSING Alex Batty had so few friends while being dragged around Europe he read each Harry Potter book at least 20 times.

Now 17, he spent six years on the run with mum Melanie, 43, and grandad David, 64 — and never got the chance to go to school.

Alex who spent time with only one other kid his age, told how JK Rowling’s seven magic novels were his salvation.

He said: “I had a Harry Potter box set. I’m obsessed with it and must have read each of the books at least 20 times.

“I carried it everywhere even though it was massive and took up so much space.

“They’re amazing books. My main pastime was reading because most of the places we were we couldn’t get wifi. I tried to get as many as I could but it was bloody difficult.”

Alex, who left Britain with his mum and grandad in 2017 for what he believed was a week in Spain, also tried to teach himself maths and computer science whenever he could.

However he spent most of his teenage years working “five hours a day, five days a week” in return for food and lodging.

Getting educated was one of the major reasons why he walked out on his mum nearly two weeks ago from a rented house near Chalabre in France.

He told The Sun: “During all my time away I never attended school for a single day.

“The only qualifications I have are my SATs test results from primary school when I lived back in Oldham.

“That’s one of the worst things that’s happened to me throughout all this — not having a proper education.”

Alex did not have his own phone but had access to a PlayStation which his mum bought him during lockdown.

Last year he sailed through the entrance exam to a computer coding school in Perpignan but was unable to enrol because he had no ID papers.

Now back in the UK with his beloved gran Susan, Alex plans to gain as many qualifications as he can so he can study computer science at university.
