A Minnesota hiker who went missing earlier this month in Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains has been found dead, officials say.
Big Horn County Sheriff Ken Blackburn says Grant Gardner was found in the Coud Peak Wilderness on Tuesday.
A professional climbing team from North Carolina summited Cloud Peak and descended on the northern route of the peak. While making a camp for the evening, the climbers noticed a “slight reflection a few hundred feet above them underneath a ledge,” according to the sheriff’s office. The team was confident it was a backpack.
The team notified law enforcement about their finding and waited for teams to arrive at daylight.
Once the SAR Team arrived, Gardner’s remains were located near the backpack. He was wearing clothing that “very closely matched the terrain he was climbing in,” authorities said.
The sheriff’s office says the recovery of Gardner was difficult and dangerous, and he is being brought home to his family.
The Big Horn County Coroner’s Office will determine the time, manner and cause of death for Gardner.
“We believe Gardner succumbed to a tragic accident as we all have surmised,” Blackburn said.
The search for Gardner began on Aug. 1 and was suspended last week.
Gardner planned a three-day hike through the Misty Moon Lake area and summited Cloud Peak on July 29. He texted his wife at the summit to let her know he made it, but the climb was “more taxing than he expected,” according to the sheriff’s office.

A missing Hinckley, Minnesota, woman, who went missing earlier this month, was found dead in Superior, Wisconsin, on Friday.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Juanita Rosa, 85, and her vehicle were found in a rural area of Superior, which is around 153 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
“Although this isn’t the outcome anyone had hoped for, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank everyone who helped look for Juanita, spread the word of her disappearance and provided information,” the BCA said on Friday.
A community came together on Aug. 10 to look for her in Pine County, Minnesota.
Rosa was last seen on Aug. 4, which was her birthday. Kelly Carey, Rosa’s granddaughter, told WCCO she is lucid.
The Pine County Sheriff’s Office says there were no signs of foul play when she went missing, and they believed Rosa drove off on her own and may be lost.
After celebrating with a birthday breakfast, Carey said Rosa went to lay down around noon. It wasn’t until 5 p.m. that someone realized Rosa and her car were gone.
“Her cell phone has been dead since Aug. 1. She doesn’t use credit cards, the OnStar in her car is 2G so it’s no longer traceable,” said Carey.
On Aug. 10, community members joined friends and family searching near Rosa’s home on Highway 23 in Hinckley, where she lived with family.
Her granddaughter told WCCO police covered 5,000 miles in an aerial search, and they covered a lot of ground with ATVs and other vehicles. After a week of searching, they’re calling for help from the community.
“We’ve got a lot of friends and family and loved ones here,” said Carey. “She’s a very beloved member of the community, raised her six kids in St. Paul, Maplewood, Oakdale areas and we all still live here in Minnesota and we just want to find our grandma.”
She was last seen wearing dark pants and a white top.

The flooding has caused havoc, running from the provinces of Malaga in the south to Valencia in the east.
Tragically, a baby is now one of the 51 confirmed dead by officials on Wednesday morning.
Dozens more are feared dead as flood water which first hit around 1pm Tuesday caused rivers to burst their banks, entered homes, and swamped cars.
The President of the Valencia region Carlos Mazon said: “There are bodies and bodies continuing to appear in places we hadn’t been able to access before.”
In one small area on the outskirts of Valencia city, 40 people are either dead or missing, police sources have said.
Two council workers are said to be missing after a river burst its banks and two are feared dead after becoming trapped in a flooded basement in their police station.
In Massannassa, on Valencia’s outskirts, a man died after getting trapped in a lift as he went down to a flooded underground car park beneath his apartment to check on his vehicle.
Around 600 people were trapped in the Bonaire mall, Valencia’s largest shopping centre last night, after ground-floor flooding.
There are fears the Cirat-Vallat dam could burst with officials putting out a warning after they couldn’t open the gates.
Soon after the announcement local media reported operators were able to open two of the three floodgates.

Videos shared by Spanish broadcasters showed floodwater rising into the lower levels of homes and even carrying cars through the street.
Drivers also posted videos showing the horrific conditions on the roads, with many abandoning their vehicles as the water rose.
A taxi driver called Paco was hit by a wall of water with “brutal” force while driving on the outskirts of Valencia city.
He said: “We were heading along a road leading to the CV-36 motorway and as we got to a roundabout before we reached it, we saw people warning us to turn round.

“We turned back but in a question of seconds a massive amount of water appeared.
“It was impossible to get out of the car. A torrent of water smashed my taxi against barriers at the side of the road and I couldn’t move.
“We spent three hours on top of the lorry trailer before the water levels started to descend and we could reach safety.”
Ricardo Gabaldn, the mayor of Utiel, a town in Valencia, told national broadcaster RTVE his town was “trapped like rats”.
He said: “Cars and trash containers were flowing down the streets.
“The water was rising to three meters.”
Emergency services workers backed by drones were looking through buildings as they sought to find trapped residents.
In some places, rescue services used helicopters to lift people from houses and cars to safety.
The entire province of Valencia – which has a resident population of nearly 5.5 million – were told they should avoid any travel yesterday evening through emergency mobile warnings.
Schools, sports events, and other public facilities like parks are all closed on Wednesday.

Over 1,000 soldiers from Spain’s emergency response units were deployed to the devastated areas.
The adverse weather is amongst some of the most extreme the country has faced in recent years.
A high-speed train with 276 passengers derailed in the southern region of Andalusia, although no one was injured.
Flights were delayed and diverted from Valencia airport at first, with it eventually being closed lat last night.
Meanwhile, Letur’s mayor Sergio Marin described the situation as “catastrophic” as firefighters and police on the ground and in a helicopter searched for four people said to be “unaccounted for.”
Marin told Spanish TV: “We couldn’t have predicted anything like this was going to happen. It’s a major catastrophe.
“Emergency responders including a police helicopter are still searching for around four people who we haven’t been able to account for in the flood area.
“Some were in a vehicle and others were in their homes. There’s been a lot of damage but we’re just hoping everyone is okay and there are no personal casualties.”
Elsewhere, in the Spanish city of Almería cars have been destroyed by giant golf ball-sized hailstones that fell from the sky as a violent storm passed over last night.
Why was Spain hit by flooding?
Spain was hit by flash floods after the east of the country was hit by a meteorological phenomena known as a ‘DANA’.
A DANA, or a ‘cold drop’ is technically a system where there is an isolated depression in the atmosphere is at high levels.
In layman’s terms, more warm and moist Mediterranean air than usual was sucked high into the atmosphere after a cold system hit the country from the south.
The easterly wind then pushed all those clouds and rain into eastern Spain.
Three to four months of rain fell in some places over the space of 24 hours.
The DANA system hit southern Spain as it arrived from Morocco yesterday and is now expected to head west over southern Portugal.

Police in Missoula, Montana, have released security camera video showing 23-year-old Jermain Charlo, who has been missing for more than six years. The video was released exclusively to “48 Hours” to help generate leads.
Charlo disappeared in Missoula in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 16, 2018. Missoula Police detective Guy Baker, who has been leading the search for Charlo, says the security camera video shows the last known images of her before she vanished.
Baker tells “48 Hours” contributor Michelle Miller that searches for Jermain Charlo have “come up empty-handed.” Miller reports on Charlo’s disappearance and the search for answers in ” in “Where is Jermain Charlo?” airing Saturday, Oct. 12 at 10/9c on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
Jermain Charlo is seen on surveillance video walking down a street in downtown Missoula on Friday, June 15, 2018. A man is walking a few paces behind her.
Missoula Police Department
Just before midnight on Friday, June 15, 2018, Charlo is seen on video walking down a street in downtown Missoula. A man is walking a few paces behind her. In a second excerpt, Charlo is socializing outside a local bar called The Badlander. The same man is standing behind her. Just before midnight, Charlo and the man leave the area and disappear into the night.
Surveillance video released by Missoula police shows Michael DeFrance standing behind Jermain Charlo, highlighted, at left.
Missoula Police Department
Baker, the lead detective on the case, says “Jermain walks out of view, so maybe somebody saw something that never thought about contacting us. So, if anybody has any information about that night or any aspect of this investigation, I encourage them to call me.”
Six years later, with no arrest and no publicly named suspects, authorities are hopeful the release of the security video will lead to new clues about Charlo’s disappearance.
Police have identified the man with Charlo that night as Michael DeFrance. He’s her ex-boyfriend and the father of their two sons. The couple had an on-again, off-again relationship. According to Charlo’s family, the couple broke up for good in 2017, but there was tension between them.
Police believe DeFrance was the last person to see Charlo before she disappeared in the early morning hours on Saturday, June 16, 2018. When Baker interviewed DeFrance, he told him he dropped Charlo off around 1 a.m. near a food market in downtown Missoula.
DeFrance said Charlo told him she was going to meet a friend named Cassidy. Police never found anyone named Cassidy, but they did learn Charlo had been visiting Missoula regularly because she had been dating a man named Jacob who lived in that neighborhood.
The couple had recently begun dating and had been in communication in the hours prior to her disappearance. Jacob was out of town in a different state the weekend Charlo vanished. When Jacob spoke with police, he told them he had tried to call Charlo shortly before 1 a.m. on June 16 and thought it was strange the phone rang several times and then went to voicemail. Jacob told police he thought someone purposely ended the call.
According to authorities, phone records determined that the call was silenced by someone.
Jacob also told police that the day before Charlo disappeared, she told him DeFrance had been yelling at her, asking her if she was dating anyone and that he wanted to get back together with her.
Police say Jacob cooperated with the investigation and he was never considered a suspect in Charlo’s disappearance.
Police discovered the morning Charlo disappeared her phone was pinging from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. approximately 14 miles from downtown Missoula in an area known as Evaro Hill on the Flathead Reservation.
Charlo lived on the Flathead Reservation and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes. She loved nature and animals. Her dream was to attend the Institute of American Indian Arts.
In Montana, Indigenous persons make up only about 6% of the population, but 24% of the state’s active missing persons cases.
Jermain Charlo has not been found. The investigation into her disappearance remains open and active.
There have been numerous police and community searches for Charlo throughout Missoula and the Flathead Reservation since her disappearance in June 2018.
On Highway 93, enroute to Missoula, Montana, it’s hard to miss this billboard and Jermain Charlo’s haunting gaze.
CBS News
Jen Murphy, an educator in Montana who came up with the idea to put Charlo’s missing poster on a billboard, has joined several searches. “They’re heartbreaking. Every little step that you take … it’s a grid search, so you can’t be any farther than an arms-length apart … so that you don’t miss anything. So, grid searching a mountain with trees that are right next to each other is almost impossible.”
“I feel like we’re all of the human race and should be looked for the same. It’s not like we’re asking for special treatment, we’re just asking for the same treatment. We’re not going to stop looking for our people. We’re not. Our lives matter,” says Murphy.
Police wanted to know what happened to Charlo’s cellphone. Turns out DeFrance provided an answer. He told police he had her phone and attempted to get into it after she disappeared, and that he then got rid of it.
DeFrance, who had been working as a truck driver, told Baker he disposed of Charlo’s phone in Idaho at mile marker 94 on Highway 12. Law enforcement searched the area, but never found the phone.
“Why would you get rid of the cell phone if someone was around to give the phone back to ’em?” says Baker.
DeFrance has not been named as a suspect in Jermain Charlo’s disappearance. “48 Hours” requested an interview through his attorney. The request was declined.
Baker’s work phone number is on Charlo’s missing poster billboard. He wants people to call him with any information about her disappearance. While the searches for her haven’t turned up any new information, Baker believes someone knows what happened to Charlo.
Charlo’s family believes she is no longer alive. Authorities are investigating the disappearance as a no body homicide.

Human remains recently found in a remote part of a hilly Phoenix recreation area have been identified as a 16-year-old autistic boy from Peoria who was reported missing five months ago, authorities said Thursday.
Peoria police said there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances related to Bradley Klose’s death.
Klose was last seen alive April 8 when he was leaving his job at a Peoria supermarket, according to police.
Klose’s family said the teen left his cellphone and wallet in his locker after work and that was unusual.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a statement that Klose was considered an “endangered juvenile due to him being on the autism spectrum” and authorities unsuccessfully searched for weeks.
CBS affiliate KPHO-TV reported that earlier this week, authorities responded to an “unknown trouble” call, and a witness in the area led authorities to the human remains in a remote spot of the Deem Hills Recreation Area, which is about 6.5 miles east of Klose’s workplace.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the boy but did not immediately determine the cause of death.
KPHO-TV reported that Klose’s family released a statement following the positive identification: “This is a heartbreaking end to the search for Bradley. Our family is in mourning and kindly asks for privacy as we work through this difficult time. Though this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we praise God for answering prayers and shining a light on Bradley. We would like to thank all of our friends, neighbors, the community and the Peoria police Department for not giving up on the search.”
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The body of 20-year-old Sebastian Santibanez was found nine days after he was reported missing, police say.
St. Paul police were called to the 600 block of Prior Avenue North after a passerby reported finding a body along a railroad track in a wooded area.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner identified the body as Santibanez on Thursday after getting results of a DNA test. Police say the missing person report was canceled after the test results came back.
POLK COUNTY, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and fire rescue are searching for a missing 18-year-old Eagle Lake man in Lake McLeod.
The sheriff’s office has identified the victim as Aaron Tillman, a student at Ambassadors Christian Academy of Winter Haven, and a member of the football and wrestling teams.
According to authorities, the teen and a 19-year-old woman were out Sunday kayaking on the lake.
Family members told authorities that Tillman could not swim, and had never been on a kayak before.
The woman he was with said she had jumped in the water to swim, but when she resurfaced, she saw Tillman struggling to stay above the surface of the water. However, she told detectives that she did not know if he fell or got into the lake intentionally.
Authorities said a nearby witness saw what happened and got into the water to help the woman rescue Tillman, but despite both of their efforts, Tillman disappeared under the water.
“We have had several boats from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, FWC, and Polk County Fire Rescue looking for this young man, and we will remain on scene until he is found. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Tillman’s family and friends, and we’re going to look for him like he was one of our own relatives,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.
The search for Tillman is expected to continue throughout the day.

The luxury boat is lying on its side at a depth of 160ft, and in the treacherous coastal waters some half a mile off Sicily since Monday morning’s sinking.
The eight divers from across Italy have so far found five bodies inside the vessel – with another person still missing.
Two of the bodies recovered were confirmed to be those of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.
The body of Canadian-Antiguan chef, Recaldo Thomas, was found in the open water on Monday and a seventh person remains missing.
The missing include Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda.
It comes as…
Experts have told how the divers – who are going down to the wreckage at 10-minute intervals – will be traumatised by the arduous task and are risking their own lives.
The salvage teams began scouring the wreckage with remote controlled underwater vehicles just hours after the sinking, as of around 8am.
The robots can be used at depths of 300m and are equipped with “advanced technology to investigate the seabed and record videos and detailed images”, according to the Coast Guard.
Bayesian superyacht was sunk by freak ‘Black Swan’ water tornado as expert says ‘we’ve never faced anything like this’
Naval units and cave divers are also taking part in the search.
Fire crews described the operation as “complex”.
One person remains missing – with the search halting for the night until Thursday morning.
The Bayesian sunk at around 4am with 12 passengers and 10 crew on board.
Bertrand Sciboz, who runs a company specialising in shipwreck research and salvage, told the BBC: “For myself and for my team of divers, it’s always very difficult if you have to do this job.
Who was Mike Lynch?
FORMER billionaire entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been found today after a £14m luxury yacht capsized in a tornado off the coast of Sicily Monday morning.
The tech tycoon, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates”, was one of the 22 people sailing onboard the £166,000 a week vessel.
Lynch, 59, was a serial entrepreneur having founded and sold tech and software companies with one of his biggest being Autonomy Corporation.
He was also been involved in Invoke Capital and cybersecurity company Darktrace.
As well as being awarded an OBE for his services to enterprise in 2006.
Born in Ilford, Lynch had a firefighter father from County Cork and a nurse mother from County Tipperary.
Away from work, Mike was happily married to wife Angela Bacares and the pair had two children together.
Angela is among those who have been rescued on the superyacht.
In 2023, the Sunday Times rich list set the couple’s value at £852m.
But Mike was extradited to the US on fraud charges back in 2023 with a judge setting his bail at £79m.
Just weeks ago, Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges by a jury in San Francisco after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
The doomed yacht, named Bayesian, is also said to be owned by the Lynch family.
“It’s always a big trauma,” he added, even if the divers are used to recover missions like this one.
Sciboz said it will be especially challenging to recover any missing passengers who were in the lower decks when the yacht sank.
“The worst thing in this case will be taking off all the debris just floating everywhere in the yacht.”
Phil Jones, of the UK-based search team Beneath the Surface, said the reason for the brief dive intervals is likely due to the “gas mixtures” used in the oxygen tanks – and will be part of a well-drawn plan to ensure safety.
A hole was also being created in the hull to open up the wreckage a little more.
“Anyone who’s been on a boat or a yacht will know that the corridors and doors are quite narrow, anyway,” he said.
“And they are considerably more so under underwater.
“There’s going to be furniture and other kinds of debris lying around, possibly blocking doors.
“It’s gonna be a very difficult search inside the yacht itself.”
He continued: “I mean, you’re looking at the mast itself with the ropes and things like that, they can all be dangerous to divers.
“As soon as the diver gets down there everything is going to be methodical and for the divers’ safety.”
The recovery operation will enter its fourth day on Thursday.
Mr Jones, 36, from Trawden, Lancashire, explained those who survived the ordeal to be quickly rescued were lucky.

“It all happened so quickly that I think unless you’re very close to an open exit it’d be very difficult then to escape,” he said.
“And I believe that some of them may have even been asleep.”
He added: “Normally, in underwater conditions you are looking at the first hour or so.
“Then it becomes a recovery operation.”
Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, confirmed that searches had finished for the day on Wednesday and will resume on Thursday morning.
He confirmed that the whereabouts of the missing sixth person remains unknown.
Identities of the recovered bodies have not been confirmed by authorities, despite local and international media reporting some had been identified.
Body bags were seen being taken to the port of Porticello on Wednesday afternoon, with the process of bringing the fifth body to shore being described by Mr Cocina as “ongoing”.
He said there will be an investigation in due course, but the priority is finding the missing.
As the body bags were taken back to the port, dozens of emergency services staff were waiting, and one bag was seen being put in the back of an ambulance.
Inspections of the yacht’s internal hull took place on Wednesday morning.
A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) also arrived in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.
The MAIB is looking into what happened because the Bayesian was flying a British flag, it is understood.
The Italian coastguard said the MAIB is not involved in the search for the missing people and has not been requested to assist.
A helicopter was drafted in to help the search effort as divers from the local fire service entered the water with torches attached to their headgear.
A police boat and divers also entered the water on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire crews said they had been accessing the vessel through natural entrances, without making openings.
The Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at about 5am local time on Monday as the area was hit by a storm.
Of the 22 on board, 15 – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping on to a lifeboat.
Survivors have been recuperating at a hotel complex in Porticello, where authorities were gathering witness statements.
The boat trip was a celebration of Mr Lynch’s acquittal in a fraud case in the US.
The businessman, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its 11 billion US dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.
The Financial Times reported that Mr Bloomer appeared at trial as a defence witness for Mr Lynch, while media reports suggest the pair are close friends.
In a separate incident, Mr Lynch’s co-defendant in his US fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

Simon (left) disappeared from Bangkok just days after an Australian

This is Kieran James Cramer, an Australian who also vanished in the busy city

Kieran’s dad flew in and found him, but why he went missing is still unknown

In the same month, Australian Kieran James Cramer disappeared in the busy southeast Asian city on July 1.
The student nurse, 28, was nowhere to be seen or heard for more than two weeks.
His dad Darren jetted in from Australia to launch his own search, filing reports with local cops, the embassy and Interpol.
Eventually he found his son in Bangkok – but how he went missing remained a mystery.
Darren told Daily Mail Australia: “We found him in Bangkok … (But) he won’t talk to us.
“We are very worried about his safety at the moment.”
Simon travelled to Thailand for a solo trip originally supposed to be July 22-August 3.
But for an unknown reason he cut it short, telling his girlfriend he’d fly home July 26.
He never showed up.
Distraught family members believed he vanished in Bangkok, before a man claiming to be a Thai immigration officer told them he boarded a plane to Finland.
Missing David Maynard shared tragic final posts days before his entire family vanished at sea after boat capsized
Both are cases of men in their 20s going missing from trips in Thailand and bewildering their worried families.
Simon’s sister Sarah Dale Robinson’s latest social media update said: “We have received confirmation that Simon did board the flight on the 26th July.
“A massive thank you to everyone that has shared and the kind people that have found this information out as the authorities at both sides haven’t done anything.
“I am waiting for a call back from the police and embassy in Helsinki.”
It’s believed he took a Finnair flight from Bangkok-Helsinki, but never hopped on a connecting jet into the UK.
Friend Demi Guttesen also wrote on Facebook: “Please share. Simon’s whereabouts are still unknown and he is still very much missing but now the focus is on Helsinki, Finland where his connecting flight would have landed at the time he was last active on his social media.
“If anyone has any connections in Helsinki or Finland please let me know. Thank you.”
The Foreign Office didn’t comment on Simon specifically, simply saying it stood ready to help any Brit abroad.
