    PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A mother in West Philadelphia is demanding answers after her 5-year-old son with autism ran away from school.

    “I started crying. I’m freaking out. This is my only child,” said mother Tatiana Nolley.

    That’s how Nolley reacted when she received a call that her 5-year-old son, Taahir, was missing from school.

    Nolley said she dropped him off at West Philadelphia Achievement Charter Elementary School around 8:40 a.m. on Monday.

    “When I dropped him off, he had to be buzzed in two doors. It’s two front doors, and then he has to be buzzed in again to get on the school side,” said Nolley.

    But Nolley said around 9:30 a.m., school leaders told her Taahir ran out the door, and they needed help finding him.

    “My son is autistic. He is nonverbal, and they know that,” said Nolley. “So much was going through my head like, ‘I don’t know where my son is.’”

    Nolley also questions where her son’s assigned school aide was before he went missing.

    Luckily, another mother, Kiana Noland, saw Taahir about a mile away from the school on 63rd and Race streets.

    She said he was running in and out of traffic.

    “I was scared for him, like I seen two cars almost hit him,” recalled Noland. “Once I pulled over and I’m like, ‘You don’t hear me talking to you? You don’t hear me telling you to stay out of the street?’ When I realized he wasn’t saying anything to me, I’m like, ‘Something is going on.’”

    Noland eventually called Philadelphia police, who brought Taahir back to school and contacted Nolley.

    The school’s CEO, Dr. Stacy Gill-Phillips, said in a statement the school cannot comment on the student but wrote, “Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities and we take our role in safeguarding them very seriously. We will continue to monitor our late arrivals and are prepared to refine safety protocols should it become necessary.”

    Nolley said she was grateful Noland saved her son.

    “I wasn’t even supposed to be in West Philly. I was all the way up here, and God puts you in certain places for certain reasons,” said Noland.

    “A big thanks to her because my son is still here, and he is still happy in life. I’m very grateful for her,” said Nolley.

    Nolley said Taahir won’t be returning to school.

    Action News reached out to the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, but a spokesperson could not confirm or deny its involvement due to confidentiality laws.

    Police launched an appeal for help Tuesday, more than a year after a boy’s body was found in Germany’s Danube River, weighed down with a flagstone slab and wrapped in foil. 

    The body, believed to be that of a boy between 5 and 6 years old, was discovered on May 19 last year near Grossmehring in Bavaria, Germany, INTERPOL said. Officials still don’t know who the young boy was and are working to uncover details of the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. 

    INTERPOL circulated a Black Notice, an international information-gathering alert, to the organization’s 195 member countries. The notice included facial reconstruction images and physical characteristics of the boy. 

    INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock called on the global law enforcement community to cross-check databases and consult open and unsolved cases. Investigators believe he likely spent time outside of Germany. 

    “Someone, somewhere knows something about this boy, making it equally important to release certain details publicly,” Stock said. “Whether he was the victim of trafficking, abduction or violence, we are committed to mobilizing all of INTERPOL’s policing capabilities to identify him and help investigators shed light on his death.”

    The boy was approximately 3 feet, 7 inches tall and weighed around 33 pounds. He had brown hair and his blood type was O. The slab weighing down the boy’s body was a “Natura Vigo” paving stone made by the German manufacturer Diephaus, according to INTERPOL.

    Officials urged members of the public with relevant information to contact the national police team in Germany, especially if they know anything about a missing child whose characteristics and disappearance indicate a potential link to the boy found in the Danube. 

    German police can work with INTERPOL to produce DNA comparisons for people who believe the boy could be a biological relative.

    A girl who went missing six years ago was found alive in North Carolina on Saturday, and her mother was booked into jail on suspicion of child abduction.

    Heather Unbehaun allegedly abducted her daughter, Kayla Unbehaun, after losing custody. The girl was last seen in 2017, when she was 9 years old, in South Elgin, Illinois, a suburb west of Chicago. Last week, the pair were spotted at a used clothing shop in Asheville, North Carolina, by an employee who said she recognized the mother and called police.

    The employee had recognized the pair from an episode of “Unsolved Mysteries,” Asheville Police Department spokesperson Samantha Booth told CNN. Photos of the Unbehauns from the Center for Missing & Exploited Children posters were shown at the end of the episode called “Abducted by a Parent,” which first aired in November 2022.

    Heather Unbehaun was taken into custody by Asheville police officers just before 7:30 p.m. on May 13, according to the police department. Kayla, now 15, was taken in by the North Carolina Division of Social Services before reuniting with her father, Ryan Iskerka.

    “I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe,” Iskerka said in a statement, shared by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, in which he thanked law enforcement agencies. “I also want to thank all of the followers on the ‘Bring Kayla Home’ Facebook page, who helped keep her story alive and were instrumental in spreading awareness. We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”

    Unbehaun was booked into jail in North Carolina on a $250,000 secured bond with plans for her to be extradited to Illinois, Asheville police said. However, she was released on bail Tuesday morning.

    On Wednesday, she was booked into jail in Kane County, Illinois, where the alleged kidnapping took place, according to jail records.

    WLS-TV in Chicago reported that she had returned to Kane County on her own and turned herself in. She has since been released again on a $10,000 bond but was ordered to wear a GPS tracking monitor, the ABC affiliate reported.

    A vehicle belonging to the family of a missing Texas boy who has severe developmental and physical disabilities has been found abandoned at DFW Airport, CBS Texas’ Olivia Leach and Alexis Wainwright report. 

    Authorities say they turned an Amber Alert for six-year-old Noel Rodriguez-Alvarez, of Everman, a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb, into an Endangered Missing Persons Alert on Saturday night.

    “I need to be very clear that we currently do not have any physical evidence related to Noel’s status as a missing person. What I do know is that we have a six-year-old disabled boy [who] cannot be accounted for,” said Everman Police Chief Craig Spencer.

    Everman police say they learned Saturday night that Noel’s mother, Cindy Rodriguez-Singh, his stepfather and Rodriguez-Singh’s six other children had boarded an international flight.

    “At approximately 9 p.m. last night, we learned that the mother, stepfather and siblings had all left the country on a Turkish Airways flight to Istanbul that flew out on March 23,” said Spencer.

    Noel wasn’t listed as a passenger on the flight.

    Child Protective Investigations (CPI) asked Everman police on Thursday evening to conduct a welfare check on Noel at the family’s home, Spencer said.

    Cindy Rodriguez-Singh told police Noel was with his biological father in Mexico. But CPI found out that wasn’t true. Family members also told CPI they hadn’t seen Noel since November. 

    “It appeared to the CPI investigator that the mother was intentionally avoiding authorities,” said Spencer.

    “(CPI) informed us that they had attempted to make contact with the mother of the child and had learned that she had taken the children from school and had not returned to school that day. That’s when the concern began,” Spencer disclosed.  

    He told a news conference Sunday that CPI had prior investigations and actions against Cindy Rodriguez-Singh.

    Police have obtained an arrest warrant for her for allegedly giving a false report about a missing person.

    What’s more, “(Noel) has a requirement to be on oxygen at certain points in time and we don’t know if he’s getting that,” said Spencer.

    Everman police have been working with the Texas Rangers and FBI on the case.

    “We have a six-year-old disabled boy who cannot be accounted for, is missing, and the mother is not willing to cooperate with investigators to simply assure that the child is safe, and we are desperately seeking the public’s help,” Spencer told reporters.

     “This is one of the strangest cases that I have ever worked,” Spencer observed. “The mother has custody of the child. Our sole mission here is just to try to make sure that that child’s OK.”

    Police said they’re not sure Turkey was the family’s final destination. They said Noel’s stepfather is a U.S. immigrant from India.

    CBS Texas spoke with a homeowner who said Cindy Rodriguez-Singh, her husband and kids lived in a home behind his house on his property. 

    Jeremiah Childers works at a gas station down the road from the family’s home and lives two doors down from them. He says Noel’s mother was a regular customer here.

    “I have seen the child that they’re looking for,” said Childers. “I had seen her and the children out before you wouldn’t think anything was really wrong with the situation.”

    Police are desperately looking for the public’s help in finding Noel.

    “To know that I was so close to something like that, I feel a little bad, like I wish I could do more to help,” said Childers.

    London — A woman with reported links to Britain’s royal family and her convicted sex-offender boyfriend, who have been missing with the woman’s newborn baby for over a month, were arrested by police in England for child neglect Monday night, but their infant was not with them.

    “The baby is still missing and an urgent search operation is taking place in the area,” Sussex Police said in a statement early Tuesday.

    Constance Marten, 35, whose father served as a page to the late Queen Elizabeth II, according to the Sun Newspaper, and Mark Gordon, 48, who reportedly served 20 years in prison in the U.S. for rape and battery committed when he was 14, disappeared on January 5 shortly after Marten gave birth, Greater Manchester Police said. 

    Their car was found burning on the side of a highway, but after they were spotted by a security camera in the area, authorities lost track of them until Monday evening.

    Police have asked people in the area where Marten and Gordon were found, near the southern English city of Brighton, to search for signs of the missing infant, including in outhouses and sheds. Police dogs and drones have been deployed for the search, and helicopter scoured a 10-mile area overnight, CBS News partner network BBC News reported.

    The couple had been living a nomadic lifestyle since September, traveling with large amounts of cash and using camping equipment to remain off-grid.

    It’s believed that Marten gave birth either in her car or near it before disappearing on January 5, when the baby was just days old.

    Marten largely cut off ties with her family when she began dating Gordon in 2016, and the couple moved around a lot, according to reports.

    Police offered a £10,000 reward in late January for any information leading to the whereabouts of the couple and child, saying at the time that they were concerned about the wellbeing of the newborn, who could have been “exposed to sub-zero temperatures, for almost a month now,” The Guardian newspaper reported.

    A former longshot Idaho gubernatorial candidate was convicted Monday of kidnapping and killing a 12-year-old Colorado girl who went missing nearly 40 years ago.

    Jurors found Steve Pankey, 71, guilty of felony murder, second-degree kidnapping and false reporting in the disappearance and death of Jonelle Matthews in 1984, the office of district attorney Michael Rourke said. A judge then sentenced him to life prison with the possibility of parole, CBS Colorado reported. 

    It was Pankey’s second trial in the case, CBS Colorado reported. In November of last year, the jury could not reach a unanimous decision on the two counts of murder (murder in the first degree after deliberation and murder in the first-degree felony murder) and the kidnapping charge but did convict him of false reporting to authorities. Prosecutors decided to put him on trial again.

    Pankey was a neighbor of Jonelle and her family when she vanished after being dropped off at her empty home by a family friend after performing at a Christmas concert in Greeley, Colorado, a city about 50 miles north of Denver. He emerged as a person of interest in the case three decades later – shortly before Jonelle’s body was found in 2019 – after claiming to have information about what happened to her and asking for immunity from prosecution.

    Pankey’s lawyers said his behavior may have seemed unusual but they argued police did not secure hard evidence against him and failed to clear an alternate suspect who died in 2007, the Greeley Tribune reported. 

    Prosecutors said Pankey kept up to date on the case throughout the years even as he moved his family to several states before settling in Idaho where he ran unsuccessfully as a Constitution Party candidate for Idaho governor in 2014 and in the Republican gubernatorial primary in 2018, the year that authorities said he was named as a person of interest in the girl’s death.

    Jonelle’s case came to the attention of then-President Ronald Reagan as his administration launched a national effort to find missing children. Her picture was printed on milk cartons across the United States as part of a project by the National Child Safety Council.

    She was considered missing until workers digging a pipeline in a rural area near Greeley in July 2019 discovered human remains matching her dental records.

    Her death was then ruled a homicide. She died from a single gunshot wound to the head, prosecutors said.

    Pankey was not a family friend of the Matthews family, CBS Colorado reported. However, he did attend the same church and was part of the same social circles as the family.

    Anthony Viorst, Pankey’s former attorney, said Pankey craves attention but is not a murderer.

    “[T]here’s no indication that he committed this murder, no indication that he had anything to do with burying the body. Mr. Pankey wanted to be a person of interest. … Mr. Pankey loves the limelight … all of the statements that he has made about his culpability have been, ‘I didn’t do it,’” Viorst told “48 hours” correspondent Richard Schlesinger as he prepped for the trial.

    ALVIN, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are searching for missing 2-year-old last seen in Pasadena, whose mother is dead, and whose father is charged with murder.

    On Monday, Texas EquuSearch took the search for Nadia Lee to Coastal Plains Recycle at 21000 Highway 6 east in Alvin, officials said.

    Nadia was last seen near her father Jyron Charles Lee’s apartment in the 300 block of South Richey Street in Pasadena, on Oct. 16 at about 8 p.m., according to Houston police.

    On Thursday, Oct. 20, officials spent most the of the day combing through Memorial Park in Pasadena, which is adjacent to the complex. They do not have a complete description of Nadia’s clothing but say she is believed to have been wearing a white short-sleeve T-shirt at the time of her disappearance.

    Nadia has brown eyes, black hair, and is about the average height and weight of a 2-year-old. At the outset of the investigation, HPD Sgt. Blake Roberts said they were conducting a homicide investigation.

    “We have received information, as well as physical evidence, and digital forensic evidence to determine foul play was involved,” Roberts said, adding that DNA was some of the evidence found inside Lee’s apartment.

    Sources say investigators believe Nadia was killed there.

    “I don’t think this is going to have a positive outcome we would like to have,” Tim Miller, the founder of Texas EquuSearch said. “One of my biggest fears is there may not be an outcome.”

    Nadia’s father has been charged with murder in the death of her mother, who was also his common-law wife, Nancy Reed. Lee, 26, is accused of fatally strangling Reed, 22, at a Clear Lake hotel on Bay Area Boulevard late Tuesday, Oct. 18.

    At the time, Lee was arrested and was being held in the Harris County Jail on a $250,000 bond. He could face more charges related to his daughter’s disappearance, Roberts said.

    His two children, ages 1 and 3, were present at the time of the murder. They were unhurt and turned over to CPS custody. Family members confirmed the couple has five children together.

    “It is heartbreaking. It really is,” the missing 2-year-old’s grandmother, Nora Reed, said. “My heart is breaking in half. I just hope we find the baby, we find Nadia.”

    As a part of their investigation into the murder of Reed, police said they received information about a missing child, later determined to be Nadia.

    Relatives told ABC13 they were trying to help Reed escape, what they felt was, an abusive domestic relationship. They didn’t have much contact with the children, and couldn’t provide information about Nadia’s disappearance.

    The little girl had reportedly been staying with Lee’s relatives in Louisiana.

    “Nancy refused to accept our help,” Delia Reed, her oldest sister said. “When we tried to help out with her relationship with Jyron, she always ran back to him. They were always back and forth with the kids, here and there with the kids, from Houston to Louisiana.”
