  • Miriam Margolyes’ heartbreaking confession about ‘preparing for last days’ amid health woes

    Miriam Margolyes previously opened up about her plans with her partner to prepare for their “last days”.

    The legendary actress, 84, has been a staple on screens for years, and has appeared in the likes of Harry Potter and Doctor Who. Away from the sets though, Miriam is loved-up with Heather Sutherland.

    But over the years, Miriam – who is on TV today (December 13) for Miriam’s Dickensian Christmas – has had her fair share of health issues. And last year, Miriam revealed the plans she had for her “last days”.

    Miriam Margolyes on planning for ‘last days’

    Speaking in 2024, Miriam said that she and partner Heather wanted to live their “last days” in Italy. However, because of “Brexit and all that nonsense” the couple are unable to.

    “So, our plans for our ending together, to be together until we both stop, then we can’t do that and that is really irritating,” Miriam told podcast host Adam Buxton.

    She added: “So, we’re working out now, or trying to work out what we do with our last days, because death is the last big thing as I say, and I think we need to prepare for it.”

    Miriam’s heart surgery

    In 2023, Miriam underwent heart surgery and revealed she had been fitted with a cow’s aortic valve: “I’ve got a cow’s heart now. Well, not the whole heart. I’ve had an aortic valve replaced by a cow’s aortic valve,” she said on the Table Manners podcast.

    Miriam added: “I don’t know how common it is. I’d never heard of that operation. But it saves you from having open heart surgery, which would be infinitely more invasive.”

    Meanwhile more recently, Miriam estimated that she will “die within the next five or six years”.

    She told The Telegraph in 2024: “When you know that you haven’t got long to live – and I’m probably going to die within the next five or six years, if not before, I’m loath to leave behind performing. It’s such a joy.

    “I yearn to play roles that don’t confine me to wheelchairs, but I’m just not strong enough.”

    Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes has some thoughts about the people who are still superfans of the famous film franchise.

    During an interview with New Zealand’s 1News network, Margolyes was asked how Harry Potter and Blackadder fans approach her differently when they see her in public. She explained that fans of the British sitcom that starred Rowan Atkinson usually ask her to say “Wicked child.” But instead of answering the question about Harry Potter, she decided to share how she feels about the fandom.

    “I worry about Harry Potter fans because they should be over that by now,” Margolyes said. “It was 25 years ago, and it’s for children,” clarifying, “I think it’s for children.

    The actress portrayed Professor Pomona Sprout in the film franchise. Her character taught herbology and was the head of the Hufflepuff House. While speaking with the host, Margolyes seemed confused about the fact that those who grew up with the books and movies are still so engrossed in the Wizarding World, despite being adults at this point.

    “They get stuck in it,” she explained. “I do Cameos, and people say, ‘We’re having a Harry Potter-themed wedding, and I think, ‘Gosh, what’s their first night of fun going to be?’ I can’t even think about it. No.”

    She did note, “Harry Potter is wonderful. I’m very grateful to it” but doubled down on her original thought, which is that “it’s over.”

    It could be argued that Harry Potter is, in fact, not over, considering Max is currently developing a seven-season series based on the books by controversial author J.K. Rowling, who has received criticism for her anti-trans comments over the years.

    Margolyes previously made headlines in September 2023 for accusing her Little Shop of Horrors co-star Steve Martin of “horrid” behavior on set. In the film, there’s a scene in which Martin’s Orin Scrivello hits Margolyes’ dental nurse. In her memoir, she claimed he actually hit her repeatedly while they shot the scene.

    Martin denied her accusations in a statement at the time and noted that he was surprised that she even wrote that because there was never any physical contact between them.

    “My memory is that we had a good communication as professional actors,” the statement read. “But when it is implied that I harmed her or was in some way careless about doing the stunts, I have to object. I remember taking EXTREME caution regarding the fake punch — the same caution I would use with any similar scene.”

    Steve Martin is adamantly denying physically assaulting a fellow actor while filming.

    Martin was slammed this week as “horrid” by former “Little Shop of Horrors” co-star Miriam Margolyes, who said he “repeatedly punched, slapped” and knocked her down while filming simulated punches and various other stunts.

    “My memory is that we had a good communication as professional actors,” Martin told People on Saturday. “But when it is implied that I harmed her or was in some way careless about doing the stunts, I have to object. I remember taking EXTREME caution.”

    The “Only Murders in the Building” actor told the outlet that Margoyles even told him she was OK after they finished filming that particular scene and claimed director Frank Oz and other crew members were actively attentive to any concerns or issues regarding the simulated acts.

    “There was never any physical contact between me and her, accidental or otherwise, in this scene or any other we shot,” Martin told People, while Oz explained that he purposefully “always” rehearses scenes like this — and didn’t see anything resembling actual violence.

    “The scene was supposed to include a fake punch,” Oz told People in a separate statement Saturday. “It’s puzzling what she’s talking about. It’s not the Steve I know or anyone knows. He’s always been professional and respectful of everyone on all of my shoots.”

    Margolyes previously accused Arnold Schwarzenegger of farting in her face.

    Margolyes, who recalled the alleged incident from the 1986 musical, remains most famous for her role as Professor Sprout in the “Harry Potter” franchise and as the enthusiastic Spanish Infanta from Britain’s beloved “Blackadder” series.

    “I was hit all day by doors opening in my face; repeatedly punched, slapped and knocked down by an unlovely and unapologetic Steve Martin — perhaps he was method acting — and came home grumpy,” she wrote in her memoir, per The Independent.

    Margolyes most recently accused Arnold Schwarzenegger of farting in her face.

    “He farted in my face,” Margolyes claimed on the “I’ve Got News for You” podcast in July. “Now, I fart, of course I do — but I don’t fart in people’s faces. He did it deliberately, right in my face … I can’t remember the date, but it was during the filming of ‘End of Days.’”

    “I was playing Satan’s sister, and he was killing me,” she added through laughter. “So he had me in a position where I couldn’t escape and lying on the floor, and he just farted. It wasn’t on film; it was on one of the pauses, and I haven’t forgiven him for it.”

    Her memoir, “Oh Miriam: Stories from an Extraordinary Life,” hits shelves in 2024.
