  • Michigan lawmakers approve early absentee ballot processing, in hopes of avoiding counting delays

Michigan lawmakers approve early absentee ballot processing, in hopes of avoiding counting delays

    [ad_1]

Michigan election officials would begin processing absentee ballots two days before the Nov. 8 election under legislation approved Wednesday in hopes of avoiding delays in counting, with absentee voting expected to remain a popular option.

Michigan is one of several key swing states that allows no-excuse mail-in ballots but doesn’t allow local election offices to begin processing ballots until 7 a.m. on Election Day, which often delays results in tight races and can leave a gaping hole for misinformation and lies to flood the public space.

Ann Bollin, House Elections and Ethics Committee chair, announced the agreement on election bills after months of negotiations. The bills passed the Republican-controlled Legislature and now go to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat.

Election offices in municipalities with populations of at least 10,000 would be allowed to remove absentee ballots from their outer envelopes on the Sunday before the election, although they still wouldn’t be allowed to remove secrecy sleeves or count votes until 7 a.m. on Election Day.

The package would also increase ballot drop box security and require county clerks to remove deceased voters from voter rolls monthly.

A 2018 voter-approved constitutional amendment allowed for no-excuse absentee voting, and a surge in such voting followed. A record-breaking 3.3 million people in Michigan voted absentee in the 2020 presidential election during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Over half of all votes cast in the August primary were absentee.

In addition to the high-impact races for governor, attorney general and secretary of state, an initiative on the ballot this November seeking to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution is expected to lead to high voter turnout. Absentee ballots start going out Thursday, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said her office expects several million to choose the option this year.

The legislation would provide some relief for local election offices, but clerks still say it doesn’t go far enough. For years, they have asked for seven days for preprocessing before Election Day.

Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said that absentee ballots take longer to process because of signature verification and that “just allowing local clerks to open the envelope ahead of time is not enough.”

Pre-processing of absentee ballots has been an issue since Benson’s first day in office in 2019, she said, and it’s been used as a “political football.”

“As long as Michigan voters want election results on Election Day, as long as it remains an important security issue for voters to not have to wait for results, we will continue to push the Legislature to allow more processing time,” Benson said. “It’s unequivocal that it’s the right thing to do, and it escapes me why any lawmakers who claim to want secure elections would fail to meet this basic change in the law.”

Former President Donald Trump used the delayed reporting in battleground states to push false claims that election workers falsified ballots in the middle of the night in Philadelphia, Detroit, Milwaukee and other Democratic-leaning cities.

Delays in reporting election results lead to “misinformation being weaponized” as political candidates claim victory before final results come in,” Benson said.

An initiative on this year’s ballot brought on by the same voting rights coalition that passed the constitutional amendment in 2018 would further increase accessibility to absentee voting. The Promote the Vote initiative would, among other things, allow people to join a permanent list to receive absentee ballots every election, along with requiring nine days of in-person early voting.

Expert: Miller’s case is a “poster child” for “false conviction for shaken baby”; Multi-part examination co-published with Life of the Law

    Press Release

    updated: Dec 20, 2016

A Medill Justice Project investigation has discovered several accidents and medical episodes experts say could have played a role in the death of a Michigan woman’s infant daughter. Accused of shaking her child to death, Tonia Miller was convicted of second-degree murder in 2003 and is serving a 20 to 30 year prison sentence.

After a nine-month examination, MJP co-publishes with Life of the Law its multi-part investigation of Miller’s case, which includes a podcast—available in English and French—that delves into the infant’s short life; two in-depth articles that explore experts’ opinions on alternative explanations for her death and examine the use of demeanor to assess if someone is culpable of a crime; and a video that reveals the impact on Miller’s family and friends in the wake of the tragedy. The stories can be accessed via Life of the Law’s website at www.lifeofthelaw.org or via MJP’s website at www.medilljusticeproject.org.

Since 2012, MJP has been probing shaken-baby syndrome, creating the world’s largest publicly available database of cases, uncovering evidence that played a role in a federal judge’s decision to free from prison a Chicago-area woman and partnering with The Washington Post on a two-part series published on page one of the newspaper. Its reporting on the subject has been honored with an IRE Award, a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and a Sigma Delta Chi Award, among others.

EveryMatrix gets license to operate in Michigan via its CasinoEngine platform | Yogonet International

    [ad_1]

EveryMatrix announced it has received conditional approval from the Michigan Gaming Control Board for licensing in the state, after its request was submitted to the regulator earlier this year.

The company is officially allowed to distribute iGaming content in the state of Michigan via CasinoEngine, its casino integration and productivity platform.

CasinoEngine provides access to over 12,500 games across more than 250 casino vendors and sub-vendors. “Thanks to its modularity, it can also be integrated with third-party platforms,” the company explained.

The move is part of an ongoing effort to expand the brand’s reach in the iGaming vertical. Besides Michigan, EveryMatrix has successfully obtained licensing in West Virginia and New Jersey, with more jurisdictions on their way as well.

Erik Nyman, President EveryMatrix Americas, said: “The state of Michigan has established a solid framework for online gaming and delivered strong results since market opening.”

“We are very pleased that EveryMatrix has been granted the license approval for iGaming and expect to go live shortly with our customers,” he added.

Earlier this month, EveryMatrix announced its sports data solution OddsMatrix Data Feeds has integrated odds, streaming, and settlement for over ten premium virtual sports from Kiron Interactive

Alexander Jones, Business Development Officer at OddsMatrix, said: ‘We’re delighted to add Kiron’s virtual sports into our Data Feeds product suite. The virtual sports betting scene has grown into an important betting vertical in recent years. We’re positive that Kiron’s extensive experience and impressive portfolio of virtual sports will be a great addition to the OddsMatrix sports data offering.’

  • PokerStars combines player pools from Michigan and New Jersey | Yogonet International

PokerStars combines player pools from Michigan and New Jersey | Yogonet International

    [ad_1]

PokerStars has combined player pools in Michigan and New Jersey. Because of the move, fans from both states now have “more choice, more tournaments, more players and bigger prizes” as PokerStars becomes the first online poker operator to announce shared liquidity in these states.

The combination took place on January 1. PokerStars US Managing Director Severin Rasset stated: “Michigan and New Jersey joining forces is great news for our players in these two states, and poker, more generally, as it promises a better experience and even more value, all with the confidence provided by a trusted, licensed operator.”

“Our community will experience more breadth and depth of games, more tournaments with bigger prizes to win, amped-up promotions, and more choice. To kick start, we are offering generous guarantees on our debut multi-state tournaments that will no doubt provide lots of value for those who take to the tables,” he added.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board granted the firm approval on December 20, and New Jersey granted PokerStars permission on December 23. “We worked closely with the regulators of New Jersey and Michigan, and we hope that more will follow this great example,” noted Rasset.

With PokerStars US launching shared liquidity, WSOP will lose its unique position as the only operator to connect networks across state lines. While PokerStars will be the second operator to launch interstate online poker in the US, it will be the first to form a network involving Michigan.

As well as the benefits that come from bringing together players from Michigan and New Jersey on a shared platform, players can also enjoy an “easy-to-use lobby” that offers fast withdrawals and same-day pay-outs, “all backed by PokerStars’ security and gaming integrity.”

Back in December, the company announced its schedule for the 2023 European Poker Tour season, which includes the return of many locations and two brand-new stops on the tour. The 2023 European Poker Tour kicks off in February with EPT Paris at the Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile, in partnership with Le Club Barrière Paris from February 15 to 26.
