‘Creed III’ Is a Major (and Majors) Success

It’s a winner by decisive knockout.

Michael B. Jordan’s latest chapter in the Adonis Creed saga, Creed III, clobbered the competition this weekend, with an estimated $58.6 million take at the domestic box office. That pummels the performance of Creed II, which opened to $35.5, and the first Creed, which brought in $29.9 over the Thanksgiving frame in 2015. Deadline called the success “the highest debut ever for a sports movie.”

The film also scored well in international markets, collecting $41.8 million, putting it across the $100 million mark worldwide in its opening weekend. The sports drama has a sturdy 87 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though a more tempered 74 from Metacritic. Cinemascore, which collects data from exiting ticket buyers, awarded the film an A-.

This is Jordan’s first time behind the director’s chair and, considering the success, quite likely not his last.

Creed III is the first of the trilogy that has no connective tissue to Sylvester Stallone’s character Rocky Balboa. (Not even incorporating Bill Conti’s musical themes, which were used to great effect in the first Creed.) Last summer, Stallone began publicly sparring with producers Iwrin, Charles, and David Winkler over rights to the characters. He uploaded some emotional messages to Instagram, including one that read “ONCE AGAIN,  this PATHETIC 94 year old PRODUCER and HIS MORONIC USELESS VULTURE CHILDREN, Charles And David,  are once again picking clean THE BONES of another wonderful character I created without even telling me,” when there was news of a Dolph Lundgren-led project in the works called Drago.

But to put it in terms the Mar-A-Lago member Stallone might connect with, the invisible fist of the marketplace has clearly spoken!

And a lot of what they are saying is how much they love Jonathan Majors as Adonis Creed’s challenger, Damian “Dame” Anderson. Indeed, the villain of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and star of the Sundance smash Magazine Dreams, dominated social media this weekend, with no shortage of winning memes. Some of them definitely trend to the “thirsty” side, so for now we’ll just stick with these three clips.

  • Michael B. Jordan Reveals He Apologized To His Mom Over Sexy Viral Underwear Ad

Michael B. Jordan Reveals He Apologized To His Mom Over Sexy Viral Underwear Ad

Michael B. Jordan’s underwear ad was so steamy that he felt compelled to apologize to his mom in advance over the viral snapshots.

The “Creed III” star and director opened up about landing a partnership with Calvin Klein and why he gave his mom a premature apology before the risqué photos hit the internet.

“I was like, my mama gon’ have to see this. Let me call her and be like, ‘I’m sorry. It’s out here,’” he told Entertainment Tonight about his sultry campaign with the iconic brand during his film’s premiere Monday.

He added, “My business all out in the streets — literally.”

Shot by famous photographers Mert & Marcus, fans quickly flooded the comments section under the photos on Instagram with loads of thirsty appreciation over the 36-year-old star’s ripped physique.

“Babe, I’m a little bit jealous, please delete,” one fan quipped.

Another joked, “I would only buy these [boxers] if Micheal is included.”

“Dear Jesus and Calvin Klein, Thank you. Amen,” another fan wrote.

Elsewhere in the interview, the PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive alum gushed about his cast members reaching success in their careers. He also dished out praise for his co-star Jonathon Majors’ recent equally swoon-worthy cover shoot for Ebony magazine.

“This was, like, a moment, you know? Just to have everything come together at one time, it feels great,” Jordan said of the epic campaign’s release aligning with the opening of his “Creed III” directorial debut.

“And to be able to share that moment with my other actors, who are having a moment of their own as well, it just feels special. It feels like everything is happening at the right time,” he said.

In the third installment of the sports drama franchise, Jordan’s Adonis “Donnie” Creed squares off in the ring against Majors’ Damian Anderson, a former childhood friend and fellow boxer.

The film also stars Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Wood Harris and Mila Davis-Kent.

“Creed III” is set to hit theaters March 3.

  • Michael B. Jordan Scores an Abs-olute Win as Saturday Night Live Host

Michael B. Jordan Scores an Abs-olute Win as Saturday Night Live Host

There was an uncharacteristic bullet at the end of last night’s Saturday Night Live cold open. The show has struggled when it comes to this frontline of comedy since Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey hung up their politico blazers with their Donald Trump and Sarah Palin impressions. This season, SNL has rightly sidelined the idea that President Joe Biden gives good material beyond affable thought-wandering. Last night’s episode opened instead with Mikey Day as a nebbish gunslinging Merrick Garland, coming for all the classified papers. The best joke of the sketch was Bowen Yang’s FBI agent, fanboying over the chance to search former president Barack Obama’s house: “He had 175 letters from Lin-Manuel Miranda begging the President to attend a performance of Hamilton! Beyonce called him on his cellphone, and he ignored it.” They were going to land the plane at a solid B/B- when Kenan Thompson’s FBI agent leaned into Day’s Garland. “Hey boss, when we done playing with your little papers, we going to head down to Memphis and make sure justice is served there too, right?” Thompson’s tone of voice was sharp and baiting, steeped in the angry, tired knowledge of another Black man’s death at the hands of law and supposed order. Last night’s cold open delivered a message beyond parody, something the form has been missing for too long.

Michael B. Jordan was last night’s beautiful host. The cut of his plum-colored suit, the dipping neckline of his shirt that seemed to cut mid-pec—the man is a vision. In some ways, his hosting debut reminded me of Kim Kardashian’s. Neither are silly. They are hard-working and disciplined, but their carefully constructed images will always take precedence over a laugh. There’s a tightness to Jordan, a terrifically compelling dramatic actor, and the writers served him well throughout the night, dressing him up silly, but trusting others to land the joke. Like Kardashian, he was going to do his workmanlike best.

“Tonight, Michael B. hosting,” he promised in his very good opening monologue, “Michael B. joking, Michael B. nervous, Michael B. vulnerable, but don’t worry, Michael B. aiight, because Michael B. in therapy.” He acknowledged the strain of his first public breakup, and endured the advances from the female cast members. “Aren’t you gay?” he asked Punkie Johnson, as she stroked his taut abs. “I am, but you Michael B. Jordan and I’m Punkie B. Curious.”

Jordan’s best turn of the night was as the State Farm Insurance spokesman Jake. Clad in his crisp red polo, Jake came to the rescue of Mikey Day’s clogged toilet, assuring the married father of two that State Farm would be by the family’s side, 24/7. But then Day comes home to Jake at night. Jake has taken his wife (played by Heidi Gardner) and their kids out for pizza. Then church. Jake is teaching his daughter the piano and playing catch with his son, who’s suddenly wearing a tiny red polo. Jake’s hand is on the small of Heidi Gardner’s back. How to get rid of Jake!? Jordan is a master of glower—chin tucked, eyes set—and Jake lets one loose when he finds a frantic Mikey Day googling Geico rates in the middle of the night. “Even if you find cheaper rates,” Jordan whispers menacingly in his ear, “we’ll match it.” Like a cuckolded George Bailey, Day finds himself stumbling on a bridge, cursing the day State Farm ever came into his home. Before he can jump, a beacon appears: Liberty, liberty Mutual to the rescue. A perfectly conceived, perfectly executed sketch from start to finish. No notes.

The show was wise to pair Jordan in sketches with its two finest weirdos. Sarah Sherman played a TV chef on Good Morning Today who had recently survived a runaway roller coaster ride. Her hair still stood straight up, her mouth plastered back, even the bow of her shirt was still frozen in flight. I could watch her choke on chianti, spit crostini crumbs, and scoop minestrone soup into her useless mouth for a full half hour. A game Jordan, as the similarly blown-back weatherman who survived the ride with her, ended up with a plate of spaghetti on his face, plops of red sauce touching the bottom of his lashes.

  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Why That Unforgettable Cameo Had To Happen

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: Why That Unforgettable Cameo Had To Happen

This post contains MAJOR spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

    Shuri needed an ancestor.

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the princess of Wakanda (Letitia Wright) finds herself completely bereft of family after the death of her brother T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) and her mother, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett). The death of T’Challa happens at the start of the film—a tragic, elegant response to the real-life death of Boseman, who passed in 2020 after a long, private battle with colon cancer. But then, halfway through the film, the queen is killed by Namor (Tenoch Huerta), a shocking twist that sees Shuri’s grief become compounded with a bloodthirsty need to become the next Black Panther to exact her revenge. She finds a way to recreate the heart-shaped herb, then drinks it and wades onto the ancestral plane, where she hopes to find her mother or brother. But she doesn’t.

Instead, she finds Erik Killmonger, her righteously sadistic cousin, played by Michael B. Jordan

In the ancestral plane, which looks like the royal hall in Shuri’s vision, Killmonger sits on the throne that the queen once inhabited, wearing all-white garments and a smug expression on his face. It’s a major twist; Killmonger dies at the end of the first Black Panther, felled by T’Challa. But is his presence in the ancestral plane all that surprising? Well, not really.

Shuri is, after all, on the verge of going to war with Namor. Vengeance has consumed her heart (a callback to T’Challa’s dilemma in Captain America: Civil War), and all she really wants is guidance on how to act on her bloodlust, from someone who will encourage her to keep moving toward the dark. Grief has made her graceless, and even though she’s horrified to see Killmonger sitting on the throne, she listens to him monologue about the importance of striking back against Namor and making sure her mother didn’t die in vain. After all, he notes, Ramonda died while protecting Riri (Dominique Thorne), a daughter of the “lost tribe.” The violent nature of her death deserves a violent response.

Shuri is swayed by Killmonger’s case, powered by a snarling, gleeful performance by Jordan, who’s enjoying every second of his return as the anti-hero. Compared to the grounded, heartbreaking scenes that came before it—Ramonda and Okoye’s furious, tear-laden fight; Shuri’s discovery of her mother’s death—Killmonger’s return is a touch camp. But once he dispenses with his sardonic greeting and starts making his case to Shuri, things get deadly serious again. For all his violent faults, Killmonger was a deliciously complicated antagonist in the first Black Panther, a militant young man who wanted Wakanda to share its plentiful resources with Black people across the diaspora. However, his plan to enable global uprisings are untenable, leading to a fatal fight between himself and T’Challa in the film’s final moments.

Fans have wondered for months if Killmonger was going to return in some way to the Black Panther universe. There was one theory that after he requested to be buried at sea, his body was recovered by the people of Talokan, the Atlanteans who live underwater and are ruled by Namor, the key antagonist of Wakanda Forever. There were also, of course, variations on the theory that he would return in the ancestral plane, since it’s the one liminal space where the dead can float in and out with narrative dexterity. It’s the latter theory that rises to the fore—confirming that, yes, Killmonger really died. But that doesn’t mean he’s gone.

Considering the tragic loss of Boseman, Killmonger’s return is a welcome tether to the first film, a reminder of Boseman’s reign and everything his character fought for. It’s also the continuation of a cinematic tradition: it’s not a Ryan Coogler movie without Jordan, who has starred in all of the director’s projects, from Fruitvale Station to Creed and, now, both Black Panthers. Killmonger’s return, however brief, was a fitting scene, an embodiment of the close bonds created by Black Panther, on and offscreen.

  • 2019 Oscars: Black Panther is the first superhero movie to be nominated for an Academy Award; Gets 7 nominations today

2019 Oscars: Black Panther is the first superhero movie to be nominated for an Academy Award; Gets 7 nominations today

Black Panther,” which struck a cultural chord for having a predominantly black cast, is now an Oscar nominee for best picture, making it the first comic book adaptation to be recognized for the category by the Academy. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film also racked up six other nominations, including best original score and several other technical awards Tuesday.

The Marvel hit follows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) as he returns home to take his place as leader of the fictional African country Wakanda, following the death of this father. Wakanda is wealthy, technologically advanced and one that has never been colonized.

The film made its mark for being the first mega-budget movie to feature a black lead character, a black director, black writers and mostly black cast. Fans in Africa also lauded “Black Panther” for its positive portrayal of the continent

“I remember being young and watching, consumed with pop culture,” Coogler told “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King. “What I noticed was none of their worlds like my world. When I was growing up in the East Bay area in Oakland, my family, my friends, everyone was black. What I longed for was stories that looked to be my world.”

Director Ryan Coogler discusses blockbuster hit “Black Panther”

    02:49

Despite sky-high expectations, Coogler said his first priority was to make a good movie. “First things first, it’s got to work as a movie,” he said.

And that it did. Black Panther is one of the highest-grossing movies of all-time, accumulating $1.3 billion worldwide and plans for a sequel are already underway.

Lupita Nyong’o was among the cast members who celebrated the nominations on Twitter.

But does it actually have a chance to win best picture? CNET’s Richard Trenholm argues it has a legitimate shot.

“Like BlacKkKlansman and Green Book, it tackles timely and relevant questions of race and prejudice. Where those other films examine the subject through a historical lens, Black Panther looks at the here and now,” Trenholm writes.

“So if Academy voters want timely subtext and positive representation as well as a thrilling story and cinematic verve, it’s all there between the punches and one-liners.”

In addition to best picture, Coogler’s movie was nominated for best costume design, original score, original song, production design, sound edition and sound mixing.

The 91st Academy Awards will air live on Sunday, February 24.

  • Timothee Chalamet’s Choker Shows All Men Should Be Accessorizing More

Timothee Chalamet’s Choker Shows All Men Should Be Accessorizing More

It’s no secret that men have finally discovered that they can have fashionable fun on the red carpet in something other than a run-of-the-mill tuxedo. Brad Pitt’s skirt, Chris Pine’s dapper Venice Film Festival ensemble, Timothee Freaking Chalamet in general. The latest ideology is that life is too short not to wear a fun outfit.

And we don’t just need to celebrate the daring red jumpsuit from Timothee or the avant-garde dress Harry Styles styled on the cover of Vogue…It’s those capricious flares of style and personality on display in Timothee Chalamet’s Vivienne Westwood choker for the Bones & All premiere. The shirtless look paired with the white, wide lapel suit.

There isn’t a set uniform like a tuxedo and standard gown for red carpets – or even real life – anymore. It starts with big statements like men in dresses, but causes people to take more subtle risks like accessorizing their outfit.

Seeing big names like Timothee or Brad can influence many others to make bold fashion choices the norm. You don’t really blink twice anymore if you see a guy wearing multiple rings, it’s just a cool fashion statement.

Jewelry is a great way to dress up your normal style without completely switching your wardrobe around. Trends don’t often vary as much for men, so the clothing options can feel limited…how are you supposed to switch up your style if the shirts are all the same?

An easy and much more affordable route is accessorizing to your liking. Adding a few rings here or a chain there can elevate your look instantly. Jewelry is no longer for the girls only.

You don’t have to have a dramatic change to switch up your style and renew your outfit completely. The simplest of accessories can be the key to refreshing your wardrobe this fall without having to try too hard. The biggest question you’ll have to ask yourself is gold or silver?

This fall, we’re choosing simple accessories as the staple for every man’s closet. It’s the perfect solution to spicing up any old outfit. Instead of your normal baseball hat, try a chain this season.

Vivienne Westwood Man. Mini Bas Relief Orb Pendant Necklace

Channeling your inner Timothee, this Vivienne Westwood chain and planet charm is a simple take on a classic. The gunmetal shade matches everything and it’s the perfect chain for everyday wear.

    Miansai Pax Ring

A simple gold ring isn’t too flashy, but gets the job done. The black enamel detail is vintage-inspired with a modern edge that can match any outfit.

    Mejuri Curb Chain Bracelet

The curb chain is the perfect chain that is thick enough to make a statement without being too gaudy. Stack this curb chain on top of a watch for a more accessorized look, or wear it by itself as a statement.

ASOS DESIGN 2 Pack Layered Neckchain With Cross

asos has the more affordable jewelry that will last you a long time. It doesn’t look cheap, and you can get two necklaces to wear separately or together.

Again, a take on the classic chain. You can never go wrong with a simple silver chain, especially when you pair it with different jewelry like rings and bracelets.

If Michael B. Jordan enhances his look with a simple iced out chain and stud earrings, you can too. Men’s accessories are a great way to step out of your comfort zone to switch up your style this fall.
