    Metro Boomin Couldn’t Have Made ‘BBL Drizzy’ Without This Comedian

    If you haven’t gotten “BBL Drizzy” out of your head, you can thank Metro Boomin — but you also need to thank King Willonius. Metro’s beat is a sped-up version of a ’70s-style R&B song that Willonius posted nearly a month earlier, inspired by Rick Ross accusing Drake of getting a Brazilian butt lift. Now, that song has become one of the bright spots in Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef after Metro challenged fans to freestyle over the track. (Drake should’ve been careful when he told Metro to “shut your ho ass up and make some drums.”) Even your mom might be singing along.

    Willonius has been “trying to work just as hard as Kendrick” during the beef, writing and producing over a dozen songs inspired by the rappers trading bars. A comedian and songwriter, he makes the songs using artificial-intelligence software, feeding his lyrics and toggling with different prompts until he gets a product he likes. “When I first got introduced to tools like ChatGPT, it unlocked all my creativity,” he says. “Honestly, it felt like I had an advantage over a lot of my peers, just in the ability to create at warp speed.” Now, it’s helped him make his mark on hip-hop history. “Hope I get a BBL out of it. Nah, I’m joking.”

    So Rick Ross first coined “BBL Drizzy.” What made you think, That’s a song?
    I mean, it was hilarious. Just the words “BBL Drizzy” is funny in itself. But I always had a history of anytime something was trending on Twitter/X, I would make a song and throw it on my SoundCloud. This time I put it on X, and it took off like wildfire. The timing of “BBL Drizzy” and the Drake-Kendrick beef being so polarizing, it was the perfect storm.

    What is your process from writing to making the song with AI?
    Anytime I come up with lyrics, it is just thinking of a concept and thinking about what type of impact I want to have or story I want to tell. For “BBL Drizzy,” it was essentially a singer celebrating his BBL. Like, “Hey man, I got a BBL — I got the best BBL.” Instead of shaming somebody about having a BBL, let’s celebrate Drake for his BBL.

    Then actually producing the song with AI, is that a lot of trial and error? How do you get to the final product?
    Yeah, a lot of trial and error, just going back and forth with the different prompts. I have a really great ear, so it’s just listening to the music once it’s done and being like, I don’t like this, then just keep reiterating the track until it’s something that I feel that people would enjoy. Then just keep tweaking it until you find what actually works. That particular track, I’ve done it in multiple different styles, country, Afrobeats, yacht rock, and it works in each one.

    So how did you find out that Metro Boomin flipped this into a beat?
    I was leaving the Improv late at night; I think it was three o’clock in the morning. I just saw it on X, and I was like, Man, this is insane. Then people started calling me and texting me.

    Do you think he did a good job with it?
    Yeah, he did an excellent job. I mean, it is going viral right now, man. I made the song back in early April, and it had this moment where it did its thing, then it kind of died down. Things don’t stay viral for very long. Then he came back and flipped it and now it’s massive. You got nuns dancing to it. It is taking on a whole life of its own.

    What have been some of your favorite versions that you’ve seen?
    I like the dude playing the guitar. That was really dope. I liked the Indian dancer. The Duolingo TikTok was interesting. I’ve been working, so I haven’t seen a lot of the videos.

    Metro eventually thanked you on X for the sample. Have you heard more from him since?
    Not much. He gave me a shout-out, so that was cool. It’s been a lot of people riding for me. Any time somebody posts the song, there’ll be people in the comments like, “Hey, that’s King Willonius who made that and wrote it.” That’s probably the biggest misconception with AI. People think that you can just throw a prompt in there and it’ll make a track like that, but like, AI doesn’t know about “thicker than a Snicker.” You’re not going to get lines like that from AI.

    What did you think about Drake using AI of Tupac on “Taylor Made Freestyle”?
    Drake just opened up the floodgates. I think Drake gave permission for everybody to use AI. Prior to that, people that were making AI songs last year, it was kind of taboo. For the biggest rapper in the world to use AI to imitate one of the greatest rappers ever, a deceased rapper, I think anything goes now because of that.

    Do you think Drake actually got a BBL?
    He’s rich enough that he could get it. I saw a TikTok with a doctor and he was saying that Drake got one, but who knows? I don’t know him. If he did, shout out to him, then he really is BBL Dizzy.

    Between Drake versus Kendrick, who is winning right now?
    I would have to say Kendrick is winning. Drake’s last diss record, “The Heart Part 6,” just felt like a lackluster effort. He was like, “Yeah, okay, I’m kind of tired of this.” But if you look at the music that really moved the people, it was Kendrick’s music. Who knows how much was factual or not, but if you just look at the impact of the records, I think Kendrick did a lot more to change how we look at Drake. But at the end of the day, “BBL Drizzy” is the best song of the whole beef.

    According to All Hip Hop, the rapper quickly responded to Metro but hasn’t said a peep in response to Kendrick Lamar’s diss track.

    Drake’s Questions For Metro

    As previously reported by The Shade Room, the rapper released a response to the shots Drizzy fired at him on the record, ‘Push Ups.’ He released the new beat on SoundCloud and challenged his fans to create a dope verse over it. The winner would receive their very own Metro Boomin’ beat as a prize.

    Drake seemingly responded on social media, stating, “You just cheffed a beat about my a**?” The rapper appears to be in disbelief that the producer created a track about his cakes.

    However, the original creator of ‘BBL Drizzy’ is a comedian who goes by King Willonious on X, formerly known as Twitter. He informed Metro that the sample used was made by him. The producer subsequently showed the comic love and asked his followers to do the same.

    Roommate React To Drake’s Response

    Many Roomies in The Shade Room’s comment section found his response comical.

    Funny man Lil Duval left several crying-laughing emojis.

    However, more people seemed to be concerned that he hadn’t addressed Kendrick and the pedophile allegations.

    Breaking news: it’s Friday. So that means we have a whole week’s worth of new music. After Billie Eilish basically broke the internet by announcing a new album this week, everyone’s wondering who else is gearing up to release some future Grammy nominees. My guess? Harry Styles. (Or is that just a wish?)


    Either way, we have to focus on the present. While I’m overly ecstatic for it to be the weekend, I’m also equally excited to be listening to all these songs on Spotify. Plus, Coachella starts today, and I know a lot of you are going to need to add some songs to your pregame playlists.

    As always, I’ve combed through every New Music Friday playlist, I’ve read all the press releases, and I’ve done my own research. Here are some of the best new songs to listen to that were released today. Let’s get listening!

    Sabrina Carpenter- “Espresso” 

    Sabrina Carpenter is having herself a year. Ahead of her first Coachella performance this weekend, she releases “Espresso”, a fun-loving hit single that makes you want to lose all your worries and just move. Carpenter is having fun with her life, and it reflects her music. Written in Paris, she was in her traveler mindset just appreciating what the world had to offer. One of my favorite releases today, “Espresso” is a certified banger.

    Sabrina told Zane Lowe,

    “I don’t think I’ve ever gone into writing an upbeat, confident record being like, “I really want to write an upbeat, confident record.” I have to be in that headspace and I have to be in that mood. And this was one of those times in my life where it was just like, I just thought I was the shit in the moment.”

    Perrie- “Forget About Us” 

    Perrie Edwards may not be a familiar name by any means…formerly a leading member of Little Mix, Edwards’ vocal power set her apart from the crowd early on. “Forget About Us” is Perrie’s debut single as a solo artist, a pivotal song that’s both upbeat in melody and melancholic in lyricism.

    Written alongside Ed Sheeran, she reminds us in the same track that although relationships don’t always last, they’re still dynamic moments in our lives that shape who we are. Edwards says,

    “I look back on past relationships and do think happily about those times. Do I want to be there now? No. It didn’t work out that way and if it was supposed to be it would have happened. Relationships have been a huge part of my life and they’ve made me who I am now. I think it’s a nice sentiment to be honest about and it’s super relatable.”

    Peter McPoland- “Speed of the Sound (of you)” 

    Peter McPoland is a one-of-a-kind talent in the music industry. A special force who can write, produce, and record a record by himself and have it sound flawless, McPoland has an ear for a hit track. As his prowess grows, the songs get better…which is exactly the case with “Speed of the Sound (of you).”

    McPoland’s first song of 2024 doesn’t disappoint by any means. It’s a bop that’s worthy of playing over and over. Unique in its own way, Peter McPoland delivers yet another earworm-y song.

    Dua Lipa- “Illusion” 

    I’m getting a bit upset with Dua Lipa for not releasing any sort of ballad and declaring that her album would sound different than the rest…however, I can’t deny that her disco-pop style is great for partying. Although she hasn’t strayed far from her usual style, Lipa shows us she knows what it takes for a chart-topping record…and she’s sticking with what works.

    “Illusion” is every bit the 80’s workout sound you know and love.

    Future, Metro Boomin- “We Still Don’t Trust You” 

    Metro Boomin is the Jack Antonoff of rap, if that makes sense. A highly regarded producer and creator who can work with the best-of-the best and create a Grammy-nominated album every single time. Every time you hear that iconic “Metro Boomin want some more” intro, you know you’re getting a banger.

    “We Still Don’t Trust You” is an absolute vibe. A song I could see myself driving on the highway to at midnight, it’s more beat-heavy than about lyricism. Plus, a few melodies from The Weeknd make this even more of a brooding, moody tune that just works.

    Maggie Rogers- “The Kill” 


    Maggie Rogers has gone for the kill with her new album, Don’t Forget Me. A songwriter to her core, Maggie Rogers is highly regarded as one of the best indie alt stars of our generation. This album deserves its own separate article, but “The Kill” is one of her best submissions.

    About a relationship that has gone sour, Maggie Rogers reflects on how things used to be good…but now they’re just going for the kill.

    Chlöe- “Boy Bye” 


    Chlöe delivers an electric breakup anthem with “Boy Bye.” I immediately added this to my playlist because the song encapsulates being so done with a partner, needing to leave them because they don’t treat you right. She bids her boy bye with this upbeat R&B track, telling him to go back to his mother because she won’t even cry.

    It makes me even more excited for her debut album, In Pieces. The world is in desperate need of an R&B diva who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is…and I think we’ve found her.

    Suki Waterhouse- “Fun” 


    New mother, Suki Waterhouse, is wasting no time getting back to her music. In “My Fun”, she yearns for a partner who loves her like she loves having her fun. A folksy rock track that is reminiscent of classic greats like The Beatles, “My Fun” is the perfect ending to this playlist.

    Fun loving, scream worthy, “My Fun” is an easy listen. Suki Waterhouse makes no mistakes with her music.

    Kendrick Lamar has thoughts on Drake and J. Cole and makes his stance clear on Future and Metro Boomin’s Album We Don’t Trust You.

    Metro Boomin’ and Future finally delivered the first installment of their long-awaited collaborative project We Don’t Trust You. Leading up to the project social media assumed Drake was the person they didn’t trust, turns out they were right.

    Future sent some bars his way on the intro allegedly, but Kendrick Lamar went after Drake and his light-skinned Brother Jermaine Cole directly.

    According to Complex, Kung Fu Kenny puts all the big three talk to rest and wants his respect paid in full.

    “These n***as talkin’ out of they necks/ Don’t pull no coffin out of your mouth /I’m way too paranoid for a threat/ Ayy-ayy, let’s get it, bro /D-O-T, the money, power, respect /The last one is better /Say, it’s a lot of goofies with a check /I mean, ah, I hope them sentiments symbolic /Ah, my temperament bipolar, I choose violence / Okay, let’s get it up, it’s time for him to prove that he’s a problem

    N***as clickin’ up, but cannot be legit, no 40 Water, tell ’em /Ah, yeah, huh, yeah, get up with me /F**k sneak dissin’, first person shooter, I hope they came with three switches”

    Kendrick empties his first clip on J. Cole for the audacity to link up with Drake and mention his name on their single “First Person Shooter“. As far as the Big Three goes Kenny makes it clear he doesn’t think the light-skinned picnic duo is on his level. As he reloads he turns his attention to Drake and all his Michael Jackson chatter from the same record. Perhaps his best wordplay in years comes with a stern reminder to Drake that Prince outlived MJ.

    “I crash out, like, “F*ck rap,” diss Melle Mel if I had to /Got 2TEEZ with me, I’m snatchin’ chains and burnin’ tattoos, it’s up /Lost too many soldiers not to play it safe /If he walk around with that stick, it ain’t Andre 3K /Think I won’t drop the location? I still got PTSD /Motherf**k the big three, n***a, it’s just big me /N***a, bum, what? I’m really like that /And your best work is a light pack /N***a, Prince outlived Mike Jack’ /N***a, bum, ‘fore all your dogs gettin’ buried /That’s a K with all these nines, he gon’ see Pet Sematary / N***a, bum

    For Drake, he makes sure to reference his latest release For All The Dogs, and promises the Canadian’s demise. This is a rather tall task but a blind man could see the bait from a mile away.

    Also, On Drake’s latest offering “Stories About My Brother” he hinted this day was coming and he welcomed it.

    “Wait on whoever to say whatever, they quiet as f**k /The city don’t love you like that and they fryin’ you up /I can’t wait for the day that you choose to retire your stuff /Takin’ off the sneakers ’cause you tired of tyin’ ’em up /That one day you wake up and tell ’em “Enough is enough” /That’s how you gon’ find out you not Kobe Bryant to us /Man, you not Kobe Bryant to us, at all”

    If Drake was truly talking to Kenny, saying he won’t be remembered in history like Kobe Bryant is grounds for war. Surely he expected shots in return as the only battle-tested rapper out of the bunch. This isn’t the last of the subliminal disses but for now, we await a response.

    Universal Music Group Is Taking Your Favorite Songs Off TikTok

    TikTok just got a lot quieter. Universal Music Group, the largest music corporation on the globe, has taken its music off TikTok as it struggles to negotiate a new licensing agreement with the platform. In an open letter to musicians and songwriters on January 30, UMG said TikTok could not come to an agreement on key issues of payment, AI, and safety. The label group said it had an “overriding responsibility to our artists” that outweighed the consequences of leaving the app. “We will always fight for our artists and songwriters and stand up for the creative and commercial value of music,” UMG said. TikTok doubled down in its own response, accusing UMG of “greed” and lying. UMG’s current contract expired on January 31, and afterward, the company’s musicians were no longer available on the app. Artists have taken their music off TikTok before, but a removal at this scale is uncharted territory for musicians and TikTokers alike.

    UMG’s letter cited three concerns: compensation, AI protections, and online safety. UMG said TikTok wants to pay its artists “a fraction of the rate” of other social platforms and only makes up about one percent of the company’s total revenue in the first place. The company also criticized the prominence of AI recordings on TikTok, accusing the app of “nothing short of sponsoring artist replacement by AI.” And UMG is worried about TikTok’s inconsistent content moderation amid “the tidal wave of hate speech, bigotry, bullying and harassment on the platform” that affect their artists.

    UMG claimed TikTok began to resort to intimidation tactics in their negotiations by removing the music of some of its smaller artists. “TikTok attempted to bully us into accepting a deal worth less than the previous deal, far less than fair market value and not reflective of their exponential growth,” the company said. UMG cited “an overriding responsibility to our artists” in taking this stand. In a separate note to songwriters, the company added, “We believe our greatest responsibility to you is to make sure your songs are appropriately compensated, on platforms that respect human creativity, with your music in environments that are safe for all and effectively policed.”

    Most of pop music? UMG is the largest of the Big Three major-label groups (along with Sony and Warner), comprising juggernaut pop labels like Republic, Interscope, Def Jam, Capitol, and Geffen while also distributing music from other labels. In other words, this is way bigger than just one record company. And it doesn’t simply encompass artists signed to UMG labels either — this development will also affect songwriters whose music is published by Universal Music Publishing Group, which includes some artists who are signed to non-UMG labels as performers. That means the list of affected artists is pretty much a who’s who of pop music: Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake, Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, SZA, Billie Eilish, Adele, Olivia Rodrigo, the Weeknd, and Rihanna, to name only a few. In 2023, 12 of the 19 No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 were by UMG artists, including Morgan Wallen’s record-setting “Last Night.”

    And many UMG artists found success on TikTok. A dance challenge on the app turned the Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” into the longest-running Hot 100 hit ever; TikTok helped Rodrigo first break out with “drivers license.” Swift revealed her Midnights track list in a series of TikToks, and even Drake got in on the fun in 2020 with the blatantly TikTok-bait song “Toosie Slide” — which immediately hit No. 1. Now, as Swift prepares for a new leg of her Eras tour and Grande readies her seventh album, Eternal Sunshine, UMG risks missing out on prime opportunities.

    Metro Boomin, who’s on Republic, supported the move on Twitter. “I love the creativity and appreciation the kids show for the music on TikTok but I don’t like the forced pandering from artists and labels that results in these lifeless and soulless records,” he wrote, after tweeting a GIF that said “It’s about damn time.”

    In its own, much briefer statement on January 30, the social platform called UMG’s claims “false” and criticized the move. “It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters,” TikTok said. The platform noted that it has deals “with every other label and publisher.” For good measure, TikTok also reminded UMG of its billion-plus users and the “free promotional and discovery vehicle” the company would miss out on. With both companies publicly taking such hard lines, it doesn’t sound like a resolution is coming soon.

    Short answer: We don’t know. TikTok doesn’t make its royalties public, and those rates are different depending on each label group’s deal. (That’s what got us here in the first place.) We do know, though, that UMG isn’t bluffing when it says TikTok is just a fraction of its income. According to Goldman Sachs’s 2023 “Music in the Air” report, which analyzes industry finances from 2022, TikTok made the music industry $220 million in revenue that year. That’s … not a lot. “Emerging platforms” like TikTok only accounted for 6 percent of the industry’s total 2022 revenue, and TikTok was only a 14 percent share of that (up one percent from 2021). Yes, that’s significantly more than YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels, but less than Facebook or even Peloton. Fourteen percent of 6 percent indeed comes out to a little less than one percent of the music industry’s total revenue. To UMG, which made $10.95 billion in revenue in 2022, that TikTok money is pocket change.

    UMG has been concerned with TikTok’s payments for years. At the 2022 Music Matters conference, UMG’s CEO and chairman, Sir Lucian Grainge, said the industry should “avoid repeating past mistakes” by not advocating for fair pay on TikTok, per Music Business Worldwide, citing previous dynamics with YouTube and MTV. And on UMG’s 2022 Q3 earnings call, Grainge and other leadership expressed hope for a fair deal with TikTok. “When you look at what the funnel that TikTok has, when you look at the billions of views, the rate at which the company has grown, we will fight and determine how our artists get paid and when they get paid, in the same way that we have done throughout the industry for many years,” Grainge said, per Music Business Worldwide. “I have seen this movie before, I know the ending.”

    Yes, but UMG’s concerns about artificial intelligence and TikTok go beyond the platform being “flooded with AI-generated recordings.” In its letter, UMG said the app isn’t just complacent in the AI content boom, but encourages it. The company didn’t specifically mention TikTok’s new AI Song tool, but that probably didn’t help the app’s case. Earlier this month, TikTok began rolling out the feature, which can turn user-written lyrics into a song in one of three chosen genres (pop, hip-hop, and EDM). “It’s not technically an AI song generator,” a spokesperson told the Verge, adding that the name would “likely” be changed. This is just the latest AI tool from TikTok, joining others like Creative Assistant, which uses AI to help creators make videos. TikTok has become more strict about identifying AI-generated content on the platform, though, announcing new requirements for labels on posts involving AI content last fall.

    For its part, UMG is involved in AI too. Last year, for instance, UMG announced a deal with the AI startup Endel through which its artists could use Endel’s AI technology “to create science-backed soundscapes.” When UMG announced that deal, though, its executive vice-president and chief digital officer, Michael Nash, specifically spoke about “the incredible potential of ethical AI” — ethical being the operative word. UMG has run into trouble with AI before, as when the anonymous artist ghostwriter released a song called “Heart on My Sleeve” last year featuring AI dupes of Drake and the Weeknd — both UMG artists. TikTok helped that song go viral, and UMG’s stock suffered about a 20 percent hit afterward. Yeah, it goes back to money: One of the chief issues with AI-generated music, to UMG, is that it could “massively dilute the royalty pool for human artists.”

    Concerns over harmful content on TikTok are nothing new, reaching all the way to Congress, which questioned CEO Shou Zi Chew over the issue in 2023. UMG wrote in the latest letter that TikTok has “no meaningful solutions” to safety concerns. While the label is referring to hate speech and harassment, it says this also extends to “content adjacency issues,” or ads running alongside inappropriate content. Unsafe content is particularly salient to UMG at the moment as Twitter cracks down on AI-generated nudes of Taylor Swift; the letter cited “pornographic deepfakes of artists” as an example of harmful content. UMG went on to call TikTok’s approach to moderation “the digital equivalent of ‘Whack a Mole,’” referring to “the monumentally cumbersome and inefficient process” of asking for a post to be taken down. TikTok has claimed it uses tens of thousands of moderators, along with an AI algorithm, but even some of those moderators have criticized the app’s processes.

    All of the Big Three label groups have been negotiating with TikTok since 2022, Bloomberg reported. Warner Music Group — the smallest, covering artists like Dua Lipa and Zach Bryan — struck “a wide-ranging, first-of-its-kind partnership” with TikTok last July. A press release was scant on details, but touted increased partnership between the companies, like finding “new ways to harness TikTok’s revenue generation and promotional capabilities” for Warner’s musicians. Good news for your “Training Season” TikTok plans.

    But UMG isn’t the only group with concerns. Sony Music Group, which has artists like Beyoncé, Doja Cat, and Miley Cyrus, has expressed an interest in higher payment for short-form video. Chairman Rob Stringer didn’t specifically mention TikTok at the company’s 2023 investor presentation, where he said Sony is “aggressively leaning into” short-form video, Music Business Worldwide reported. “It doesn’t take a scientist to realize that we are being underpaid by some of those content providers,” Stringer added.

    UMG’s deal with TikTok was up January 31, and its artists’ music is off the app as of February 1. If you attempt to use a UMG artist’s song on TikTok, it says “music is not available.” If you’ve been sitting on any SwiftTok ideas, looks like you’ll have to keep waiting.

    The end of the year calls for reflection — hence our 2023 Popdust Music Awards, celebrating all of the great music we heard last year. And now, the beginning of the year indicates a time of anticipation. For that, we have our
    2024 Artists to Watch, which also means that Awards Season is right around the corner.


    Starting with the Golden Globes on January 7, we are about to experience countless red carpet shots, couples debuts (
    still waiting for you, Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan), and teary-eyed acceptance speeches.

    While there are the BAFTAs, the Emmys, the Oscars, and the SAG Awards, my speciality is music. And there is no bigger mecca for musicians than
    the GRAMMY Awards. Held on February 4, 2024, and hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, the GRAMMYs are music’s biggest night.

    Awards Season brings out everyone’s inner critic. Suddenly, we think we know more than the Recording Academy. Every year, there are viral moments and scandalous decisions. The Recording Academy ultimately outrages the general public in some way or another — and inevitably, fandoms will take to apps like X to become the next Joan Rivers.

    It’s a delicious time of year when your favorite celebrities are forced out of hiding and into the spotlight, and we can’t wait. To get everyone in the spirit of judgment, here are
    some way-too-early GRAMMY predictions for the year!

    Record Of The Year: “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

    Any Kid Harpoon song is a classic, and Cyrus’ return from a brief hiatus from music was met with high marks. It was Spotify’s most streamed song in a week ever, spent time at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, and was the fastest song in Spotify history to reach 1 billion streams.

    Album Of The Year: Midnights by Taylor Swift

    She’s won this coveted award three times already, and it’s impossible to discredit the year of Taylor Swift. She is on track for the highest-grossing tour of all time with the Eras Tour, Midnights is Apple Music’s biggest pop album of all time in terms of first-day streaming, and the album is the reason she was all 10 of Billboard’s Top 10 Songs (the first time all women have dominated the charts ever). Give Swift her flowers.

    Song Of The Year: “A&W” by Lana Del Rey

    Another Jack Antonoff production, Lana Del Rey’s album is a spiritual awakening. With an essence of transcendentalism and a hint of gospel, it’s Lana to her core. “A&W” is hailed Song of the Year by many already, and it’s time we recognize her for the artist she is, was, and always will be.

    Best New Artist: Ice Spice


    I haven’t seen many people rise to the top as quickly as Ice Spice, nor have I seen someone garner such a passionate fanbase. The rapper has hits like “Deli” and collabs with rap queen Nicki Minaj on “Barbie World” and Taylor Swift on “Karma”, not to mention her Munchkin drink at Dunkin Donuts.

    Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical): Jack Antonoff

    Not only is Antonoff the mastermind behind many Taylor Swift albums, including Midnights, but he has Lana Del Rey’s multi-nominated album, “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard?,” under his belt. He can’t miss, and for that, he wins.

    Best Pop Solo Performance: “What Was I Made For? [From The Major Motion Picture Barbie]”

    This song is stunning, productionally perfect, and sonically flawless. Billie and Finneas continue to grow as an unstoppable singer-songwriter duo who can make any song fit any moment.

    Best Pop Vocal Album: GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo

    Olivia Rodrigo wanted to have fun with her sophomore album following the immense pressure and success of her debut, SOUR. With GUTS, we had viral singles yet again that promise Rodrigo is here for the long haul.

    Best Dance/Electronic Recording: “Strong” by Romy + Fred again…

    Developing a cult following in the electronic music world, Fred again… is one of the hottest house dance artists in the world right now. Following a successful bout of live shows and reaching fans on almost every platform imaginable, “Strong” is a winner.

    Best Pop Dance Recording: “Rush” by Troye Sivan

    Troye Sivan understands how to make out-of-the-box pop music, and seals it with one hell of a dance number. He’s the embodiment of a popstar, and “Rush” was just an example of the high precedent he’s set.

    Best Rock Performance: “Not Strong Enough” by boygenius

    Compiled of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, boygenius is a supergroup showing the world how to rock again. “Not Strong Enough” showcases what each member brings to the group in one sound synergy.

    Best Rock Album: Starcatcher by Greta Van Fleet

    Hailed as The Next Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet brings you on a journey with their Starcatcher album. Each song a delight, Greta Van Fleet has developed their sound and found their stride.

    Best R&B Performance: “Kill Bill” by SZA

    SOS is one of the best albums of the year, and while I don’t see it winning in the Big 4 due to competitors like Swift, I still think it wins in general. “Kill Bill” was one of the biggest songs and continues to be one of the most viral.

    Best Rap Performance: “Rich Flex” by Drake & 21 Savage

    The saying “I like what Drake likes” holds true for many…and the collaboration album, Her Loss, with 21 Savage was one of the biggest of the year. “Rich Flex” makes sense for two of the biggest rappers out there right now.

    Best Rap Album: Heroes & Villains by Metro Boomin’

    Metro Boomin’ is the rapper and producer responsible for countless hits like Migos’ “Ric Flair Drip”. His Heroes & Villains album is a masterclass for high quality rap, intricate detail in production and songwriting, and straight up hits.

    Social media is buzzing over 21 Savage‘s Drake-less new album American Dream featuring Metro Boomin, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Doja Cat, Burna Boy, Lil Durk, Brent Faiyaz, Summer Walker, and Mariah The Scientist sprinkled across 15 trunk-rattling tracks.

    In an intriguing rollout, Savage teased the star-studded collection of featured artists by sharing their baby pics on his Instagram in the days leading up to the drop.

    Prior to that, the Grammy-winning rapper surprised fans with the trailer for American Dream: The 21 Savage Story which we’re still not sure is real or just elaborate promo like that now-infamous fake Vogue cover.

    Directed by Donald Glover, Stephen Glover, Jamal Olori, and Fam Udeorji, the Tubi-esque short film depicts three generations of 21 Savage (played by Glover and Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin) in the heat of a personal crisis.

    Joining Savage in the trailer are Donald Glover, Caleb McLaughlin, Golden Globe-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne, Bel-Air star Jabari Banks, The Haunting of Hill House’s Victoria Pedretti, Beef’s Young Mazino, Fast & Furious veteran Chad Lindberg, P-Valley star Gail Bean, and the always hilarious Druski.

    Additionally, Savage dropped altered American flags throughout the city of Atlanta in collaboration with creative multihyphenate and visual artist Hebru Brantley.

    Instead of the traditional 50-star layout, these flags were adorned with only 21 stars.

    “In creating this piece, I aimed to encapsulate the history of 21 Savage while incorporating elements of my own personal connection to his music,” said Brantley. The flag itself is black with 6 stripes, symbolizing what it means to be Black in America — it’s better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

    For those with a discerning eye, my signature linework can be seen within the stripes. In those blue and red bands, there are illustrations that are deeply personal to both Savage and myself – these elements speak to what 21 stands for through his music, his experiences and the adversities he has faced.”

    With the holiday season in full fa-la-la-la-flow, it’s time to reflect. When the year winds down, we feel a bit of burn out — you stare blankly at screens without motivation, you don’t want to work, and you’ve just spent all your money on gift giving.


    The year ends in two weeks, which means all of your social media accounts are wrapping up the past 365 days and holding a mirror up to who you truly are. For Snapchat users, you get a montage of photos and videos from those embarrassing nights out and the time you took a selfie crying.

    At Popdust, we’ve always loved music. It’s why I have a
    weekly segment rounding up popular new music and it’s why we report on so many of your most favorite artists. We’re constantly searching for the next big thing in music. And 2023 was massive for changing the soundscapes we know and love.

    For instance, country folk was the breakout genre of the year thanks to artists like Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan. Popular DJ’s like John Summit and Dom Dolla have driven a surge in popularity of house music. We’ve seen Taylor Swift take over the world, alongside rapidly rising stars like Ice Spice and SZA.

    With the recent announcement of the GRAMMY Award nominees, it’s never too early to hold our
    own award ceremony to celebrate all of the awesome music released this year. The Popdust Music Awards are for all of those 2024 hitmakers who gave us viral moments, graced our speakers, and made us sing along.

Consistently breaking records like dominating the Billboard Top 10, Swift deserves her flowers.

    What’s New To Spotify Wrapped This Year?

    This year’s theme was “Wrapped, Or It Didn’t Happen.” In a world of
    AI, Spotify wanted to celebrate what’s real: embracing the real moments you experience through music. They wanted to encapsulate the year we’ve had as listeners, so we can appreciate the different cultures and sounds that have been brought to us.

    You’ll see more moving parts during the campaign, with bolder colors, bigger digital productions across the world. But there’s more to your Wrapped than just a special playlist based on your listening data. For the first time, you’ll be able to view it on your computer as well.

    One of the newest feature is Me, In 2023, where you’re assigned one of twelve listening personalities to tell you a bit more about yourself. For example, I’m an Alchemist, which means I create more playlists and listen to them more than the average user. This, obviously, is not shocking as I curate a
    Weekend Playlist for this website.

    There’s also SoundTown, which matches you to a city where you’ll likely meet people who have similar music taste to you. The excitement doesn’t stop there, you’ll be able to see which month you listened to your Top 5 Artists the most and use the Blend feature to see how you and your friends match up.
