MVT Solutions Testing Validates Fuel Savings for Streamliners Miniskirt

Unique underbody device shows 2.65 gal/1,000 miles fuel savings in on-vehicle tests.

    Press Release

    Mar 2, 2022

Mesilla Valley Transportation Solutions, a provider of breakthrough fuel economy testing and design and development services for the trucking industry, announced today the results of testing on the Streamliners Miniskirt with Eco Flaps. The device provided fuel savings of 2.65 gallons per 1,000 miles, or 2.37%. The Miniskirt is a unique alternative to a traditional side skirt and is a short rear-mounted device.

“The Miniskirt was California (CARB) certified in 2021,” said Joe Hamm, President and CEO of Streamliners. “Our next step was to further validate its performance with on-road testing. MVT Solutions is the industry leader in providing high-confidence, real-world fuel economy testing, so we chose to work with them.”

The testing was completed in November of 2021 with two vehicles running simultaneously at 65 mph around a 9-mile circle track near Pecos, Texas. The test vehicles were 2019 International LT 625s with Cummins X15 15-liter engines and Eaton Endurant 12-speed automated manual transmissions. Trailers were 53-foot Hyundai dry vans. Gross vehicle weight for each vehicle was approximately 45,000 lbs. Both vehicles utilized dual tires and 24-inch width mud flaps. One vehicle had the Streamliners Miniskirt installed; the other did not. Eco Flaps were installed on the trailer only.

“MVT Solutions testing of the Streamliner Miniskirt with Eco Flaps showed a fuel economy improvement of 2.65 gal/1000 miles (2.37%),” said Daryl Bear, lead engineer and chief operating officer at MVT Solutions. “This can be considered substantial fuel savings in placement of trailer skirts,” he added. According to Hamm, “The test MVT Solutions performed confirmed and validated our existing data and along with our California certification, should give operators the confidence they need in considering the Miniskirt for their fleets.”

Hamm says that while the test was on a dry van, the Miniskirt can be installed on flat beds, tankers, dump trailers and intermodal chassis. “We believe our product will provide aerodynamic savings on those types of trailers as well.”

MVT Solutions Testing Reveals Fuel Savings for EkoStinger

A one-piece aerodynamic fairing achieved 5.72 gal/1,000 miles (5.30%) fuel savings in a recent test.

    Press Release

    Mar 1, 2022

Mesilla Valley Transportation Solutions, a provider of breakthrough fuel economy testing and design and development services for the trucking industry, announced today test results for The NextGen EkoStinger, an aerodynamic fairing for Class 8 tractor-trailers. It is a one-piece design made with polyethylene that sits underneath the trailer in front of the rear wheels and slides with varying tandem positions. Testing in November 2021 demonstrated that the technology resulted in a fuel savings of 5.72 gallons per 1,000 miles or 5.30%.

“Obviously we got a really good number with MVT Solutions, 5.30%,” said A.J. Edwards, CEO of EkoStinger. “Fleets like to look at on-vehicle test results to help them make their product purchase decisions, and we know that MVT Solutions has a good reputation in the industry. We know that fleets use MVT Solutions results to help make their purchase decisions.”

Tests were conducted on 2019 International LT 625 with Cummins X15 15-liter engines and Eaton Endurant 12-speed automated manual transmissions pulling 53-foot Hyundai dry vans. A baseline test was run without the aerodynamic NextGen EkoStinger on the trailer and then the aerodynamic device was installed, and the test run again. Note: the EkoStinger used in the test was a prototype unit.

“NextGen obviously implies that there was a prior generation of this product,” Edwards explains. “We have redesigned the product and it performed significantly better than our prior generation product, which itself was still a great product with good fuel economy savings.” The new unit is two feet shorter from tip to tail and weighs less than its predecessor. The bottom of the new model is partially open, allowing a sightline to the bottom of the trailer and easier access for inspection.

According to Daryl Bear, lead engineer and chief operating officer at MVT Solutions, “The fuel economy improvement of 5.72 gallons per 1,000 miles (5.30%) is a substantial fuel savings, which is comparable in magnitude to well-performing trailer skirts.”
