  • Jensen Huang Shakes Vegas With Nvidia’s Physical A.I. Vision at CES

    [ad_1]

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is the biggest celebrity in Las Vegas this week. His CES keynote at the Fontainebleau Resort proved harder to get into than any sold-out Vegas shows. Journalists who cleared their schedules for the event waited for hours outside the 3,600-seat BleauLive Theatre. Many who arrived on time—after navigating the sprawling maze of conference venues and, in some cases, flying in from overseas to see the tech king of the moment—were turned away due to overcapacity and redirected to a watch party outside, where some 2,000 attendees gathered in a mix of frustration and reverence.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Huang jogged onto the stage, wearing a glistening, embossed black leather jacket, and wished the crowd a happy New Year. He opened with a brisk history of A.I., tracing the last few years of exponential progress—from the rise of large language models to OpenAI’s advances in reasoning systems and the explosion of so-called agentic A.I. All of it built toward the theme that dominated the bulk of his 90-minute presentation: physical A.I.

Physical A.I. is a concept that has gained momentum among leading researchers over the past year. The goal is to train A.I. systems to understand the intuitive rules humans take for granted—such as gravity, causality, motion and object permanence—so machines can reason about and safely interact with real environments.

    Nvidia enters the self-driving race

Huang unveiled Alpamayo, a world foundational model designed to power autonomous driving. He called it “the world’s first reasoning autonomous driving A.I.”

To demonstrate, Nvidia played a one-shot video of a Mercedes vehicle equipped with Alpamayo navigating busy downtown San Francisco traffic. The car executed turns, stopped for lights and vehicles, yielded to pedestrians and changed lanes. A human driver sat behind the wheel throughout the drive but did not intervene.

One particularly interesting thing Huang discussed was how Nvidia trains physical A.I. systems—a fundamentally different challenge from training language models. Large language models learn from text, of which humanity has produced enormous quantities. But how do you teach an A.I. Newton’s second law of motion?

“Where does that data come from?” Huang asked. “Instead of languages—because we created a bunch of text that we consider ground truths that A.I. can learn from—how do we teach an A.I. the ground truths of physics? There are lots and lots of videos, but it’s hardly enough to capture the diversity of interactions we need.”

Nvidia’s answer is synthetic data: information generated by A.I. systems based on samples of real-world data. In the case of Alpamayo, another Nvidia world model—called Cosmos—uses limited real-world inputs to generate far more complex, physically plausible videos. A basic traffic scenario becomes a series of realistic camera views of cars interacting on crowded streets. A still image of a robot and vegetables turns into a dynamic kitchen scene. Even a text prompt can be transformed into a video with physically accurate motion.

Nvidia said the first fleet of Alpamayo-powered robotaxis, built in the 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLA vehicles, is slated to launch in the U.S. in the first quarter, followed by Europe in the second quarter and Asia later in 2026.

For now, Alpamayo remains a Level 2 autonomous driving system—similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving—which requires a human driver to remain attentive behind the wheel at all times. Nvidia’s longer-term goal is Level 4 autonomy, where vehicles can operate without human supervision in specific, constrained environments. That’s one step below full autonomy, or Level 5.

“The ChatGPT moment for physical A.I. is nearly here,” Huang said in a voiceover accompanying one of the videos shown during the keynote.

  • Mercedes-Benz agrees to pay nearly $150 million to settle multistate emissions allegations

    [ad_1]

Mercedes-Benz USA and parent company Daimer AG have agreed to pay $149.6 million to settle allegations that the automaker secretly installed devices in hundreds of thousands of vehicles to pass emission tests, a coalition of attorneys general announced Monday.

According to the coalition, between 2008 and 2016 the German automaker equipped more than 211,000 diesel passenger cars and vans with software devices that optimized emission controls during tests but reduced the controls during normal operations. The devices enabled vehicles to far exceed legal limits for nitrogen oxides, a pollutant that can cause respiratory illnesses and contributes to smog.

The states alleged that Mercedes installed the devices because it couldn’t reach design and performance goals such as fuel efficiency while complying with emissions standards. The automaker allegedly concealed the devices from state and federal regulators and the public while marketing the vehicles as “environmentally friendly” and compliant with emissions standards.

The agreement is still subject to court approval.

Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz USA already agreed in 2020 to pay $1.5 billion to the U.S. government and California state regulators to resolve the emissions cheating allegations.

Mercedes-Benz issued a statement saying the deal announced Monday will resolve all remaining legal proceedings tied to diesel emissions in the United States, but the company still considers the accusations unfounded and denies any liability. The automaker has made “sufficient provisions” for the cost of the settlement, the statement said.

Fifty attorneys general, including the attorneys general of the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, made up the coalition announced Monday. California was not part of the group.

The settlement calls for the automaker to pay the attorneys general $120 million with another $29 million payment suspended and potentially waived pending completion of a consumer relief program.

That effort will extend to the roughly 40,000 vehicles with the devices that hadn’t been repaired or permanently removed from the road by Aug. 1, 2023. The owners of those vehicles would get $2,000 per vehicle if they install approved emissions modification software and an extended warranty.

The settlement also calls for Mercedes to comply with reporting requirements and refrain from any further unfair or deceptive marketing or sale of diesel vehicles.

Volkswagen also ended up paying $2.8 billion to settle a criminal case due to emissions cheating.

  • Street Lines – 2026 Mercedes-Benz EQE 320+ SUV

    [ad_1]

I was hoping to review another Mercedes-Benz by popular demand before the year ended, and the wait is over. Introducing the 2026 Mercedes-Benz EQE 320+, the carmaker’s successful attempt to bring us a midsize, all-electric luxury SUV, boasting a blend of performance, technology, and pampering the brand is renowned for.

    Photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz

The exterior is all about the curves, with a rounded body for a futuristic look ideal for aerodynamics. A welcomed sporty edginess is always welcome when it comes to the optional AMG Line Exterior ($3,500) appointments, the full-width LED lightband, and 21-inch quad five-spoke wheels with black accents. Friends and onlookers consistently complimented the exterior’s signature Twilight Blue, which I feel has some hues of grey and purple tastefully enhancing in the paint blend unlike any other car I have seen on the road.

Inside, the cabin fits up to five adults in pure luxury, greeted by Neva Grey and Biscaya Beige leather upholstery coupled with natural grain anthracite Linden wood trim. The driver gets treated to a vibrant MBUX multimedia system, featuring the vibrant 12.8-inch OLED portrait display, plus a head-up display I am always fond of, a backlit laser-cut star pattern illuminating the cockpit, and 64-color ambient lighting to set the mood. Seats are plush, temperature controlled and hug the body perfectly throughout the spacious interior, while everyone breathes confidently thanks to the HEPA air filtration. Great sound always hits high marks for me, and the optional Burmester 3D Surround Sound with Dolby Atmos kicks anything you play via Apple and Android applications up several tiers with a concert-like experience.

    Photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz

Addressing the driving experience, the EQE 320+ has a more-than-efficient electric drivetrain paired with advanced regenerative braking that can be adjusted directly from the steering wheel. This system, including the Dynamic Select system—choose from Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual modes—delivers the welcomed option for drivers to customize their driving style. The optional AIRMATIC air suspension was also added to this version, which made driving smooth and cloudlike, with the option to take things on the more responsive side when desired. Performance specs are more than adequate, with the single-speed transmission delivering 315 horsepower (a 27-hp boost from last year), 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, and 416 lb.-ft of torque. I am always a fan of the DC fast-charging capability—up to 170 kW using the available Mercedes-Benz DC Fast Charging Adapter—won’t kill your day, replenishing the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about a half an hour. 80 MPGe is the average for city and highway commutes, combined, with a decent 270-mile range.

    Photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz

Safety standard and optional features include active brake assist, active lane keeping assist, the aforementioned digital LED headlamps with adaptive highbeam assist, and a crisp surround-view camera with active parking assist. The guard 360° vehicle protection keeps drivers at ease when parked, and there is even attention assist to make sure drivers are alert on particularly long excursions. More demands are met with a quick “Hey, Mercedes” followed by a personable multilingual digital assistant to guide you through many of the features this SUV provides.

Starting at $64,950 and a completely equipped as-reviewed totaling just under $82K, the 2026 EQE 320+ SUV brings electric efficiency, opulent craftsmanship, and state-of-the-art technology, collectively confirming Mercedes-Benz’s future in the electric world will keep competitors on their toes.

    Fuel Economy MPGe: 87 city/77 highway/82 combined

  • This Cocktail Has Been A Honey Of A Success

This Cocktail Has Been A Honey Of A Success

    [ad_1]

This cocktail has made the rounds on social media and events….and has become a raging success.

This cocktail has been a honey of a success…and a refreshing change at sporting events. The Grey Goose Honey Deuce is the official cocktail of the US Open.  The drink returned this year to a roaring success. The name comes from a word play on the tennis term deuce (a tie score of 40-40) and the honeydew melon garnish.  Refreshing, intoxicating and popular – the drink has been gushing out of court side bars at $23 a pop.

The US Open is a premier tennis tournament sponsored by big hitters like American Express, Mercedes Benz, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Rolex and Emirates Airlines. The well heeled, the super rich and the famous flock to the stands. Anna Wintour was there along with celebrities at Arthur Ashe stadium. Spotted at the event was Phoebe Dynevor, Hugh Jackman, Zoey Deutch, Lindsay Lohan, Alec Baldwin, Kerry Washington, and Alicia Keyes. The crowd knows how to drink and drink well…and this cocktail has done well.  This year they ordered over 550,000 Honey Deuces, over 100,000 more than last year.  Roughly $12.65 million plus tips were spent over the two weeks of the tournament.

But you don’t have to fly to New York and hobnob with the crowd to have your own.  You can make it at home and imbibe. Here is how to make your own Grey Goose Honey Deuce.

    Ingredients

    • 1 1.4 oz Grey Goose Vodka
    • Fresh Lemonade
    • Premium Raspberry Liqueur
    • Honeydew Melon Balls

    Create

    1. Fill a chilled highball glass with cubed ice and add Grey Goose Vodka
    2. Top with fresh lemonade and raspberry liqueur
    3. Garnish with a skewer of 1 or multiple frozen honeydew melon balls

Beer has been the staple of sporting events, but stadiums around the country have been changing their drinks menu while adding sponsorship dollars to the coffers. In 1989 Evian water wanted to reach hot and thirsty affluent customers, so they became an official sponsor of the US Open. The tennis set has had beverage-centric partnerships ever since. And this has translated to other events from the Kentucky Derby to football adding it to their menu.

The security cam footage shows Dal Pino’s white Mercedes SUV pinning Malkoun against a shop front, before reversing and hitting him again.

It is alleged that Dal Pino hit Malkoun four times with her car.

Malkoun can be seen moving but collapsed to the ground.

The video footage then shows a woman in heels exit the car and remove a bag from Malkoun’s possession.

She then re-enters the car and speeds away from the crime scene.

Police later arrested Dal Pino after they had identified her car. She is currently held at the Don Bosco prison.

According to The Times, she claimed that she had not intended to kill Malkoun, she only wanted her bag back.

Dal Pino said she had come out of a restaurant at about 11pm on Sunday and was stopped by Malkoun as she approached her parked car.

He threatened her with a knife and ordered her to hand over her bag, she said.

Dal Pino’s lawyer Enrico Marzaduri said: “She didn’t want to kill but to stop the man and get her bag back.

“Inside it were her documents and house keys and she was fearful he would have committed other crimes.”

He also claimed his client couldn’t call the police because her phone was in her handbag.

According to local media, Dal Pino is the well-known owner of a beach club in Viareggio, Italy.

Cinzia said: “I was threatened with death. What was I supposed to do?”

“I thought he had a knife.

Police did not find a knife among Malkoun’s possessions.

A couple came across Malkoun after he was struck by a car. They called 118, however, he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Enrico Carboni, a lawyer who defended him on various occasions, said: “I would often see him hanging around my office and on the steps of the local church, wandering from one place to another, but he was not dangerous.”

  • Mercedes begins piloting Apptronik humanoid robots | TechCrunch

Mercedes begins piloting Apptronik humanoid robots | TechCrunch

    [ad_1]

Pilot season has officially begun for the world of humanoid robotics. Last year, Amazon began testing Agility’s Digit robots in select fulfillment centers, while this January, Figure announced a deal with BMW. Now Apptronik is getting in on the action, courtesy of a partnership with Mercedes-Benz.

According to the Austin-based robotics startup, “as part of the agreement Apptronik and Mercedes-Benz will collaborate on identifying applications for highly advanced robotics in Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing.” Specific figures have not been disclosed, as is customary for these sorts of deals. Generally, the actual number of systems included in a pilot are fairly small — understandably so, given the early nature of the technology.

Even so, these deals are regarded as a win-win for both parties. Apptronik can demonstrate clear interest from a leading automotive name, while Mercedes signals to customers and shareholders alike that it’s looking to the future. What comes next is what really matters. Should the pilot go well, causing the carmaker to put in a big order, that would be a massive feather in Apptronik’s cap — and the industry at large.

Humanoids have been drawing massive investor interest of late, as evidenced by Figure’s recent jaw-dropping $675 million raise. The next couple of years will be vitally important for the continued success of these firms, as they look to prove out meaningful ROI.

As for what the robots will actually do on the manufacturing floor, co-founder and CEO Jeff Cardenas notes in a release, “Mercedes plans to use robotics and Apollo for automating some low skill, physically challenging, manual labor — a model use case which we’ll see other organizations replicate in the months and years to come.”

“Low skill” refers to the level of labor these systems will replace. My guess is that it involves a lot of moving totes from point A to point B — something repetitive and physically taxing that is both essential and (relatively) easy to automate. The other important part of “low skill” is also likely an attempt to nip criticism of replacing human workers in the bud. We’re still a ways off from humanoids being able to do so in a meaningful way.

Apptronik is a University of Austin spinout best known for its work on NASA’s Valkyrie humanoid robot.

  • BMW joins Mercedes, Tesla to make in-car gaming a reality

BMW joins Mercedes, Tesla to make in-car gaming a reality

    [ad_1]

The BMW Group, including BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, jumped into the in-car gaming world at CES, a consumer electronics trade show, today in Las Vegas. The ninth generation of BMW’s operating system utilizes third-party apps and games in the BMW ConnectedDrive Store to deliver the experience to customers.

In addition to games the app store will offer tools for communication, productivity, news and other infotainment. BMW joins Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and others now with ways to play in the vehicle.

“BMW is synonymous with both the ultimate driving machine and the ultimate digital experience,” said Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management responsible for BMW Group Development, in a press release.

“At the CES we are showing more content, more customization and more gaming. This is all underpinned by our in-house developed BMW Operating System. And we will take a look to the future with augmented reality and reliable artificial intelligence at the interaction between human and machine.”

BWM is adding in-car gaming to its ninth-generation operating system.
    BMW North America

At the electronics show BMW showed a game called Beach Buggy Racing 2, a throwback racing video game meant to feel like the home console titles of the ’80s and ’90s. Two passengers can compete against each other in the same vehicle with a split-screen setup, which the model is parked.

With connected vehicle technology becoming more advanced and popular, it wouldn’t be difficult to allow over-the-air play with other BMW drivers, experts believe.

BMW said that players will be able to connect their own favorite controllers to the vehicle via Bluetooth, a feature that is coming via an over-the-air update later this year.

All of this technology is in addition to the AirConsole App, which already lets BMW customers play single and multiplayer games in their car. Those are more casual games, like ones a player would play on their smartphone, which can also be used as a controller. The AirConsole list of games is also being constantly added to.

Games will be available via the BMW Digital Premium, and is only available for models with BMW Operating System 9. It can be found in the ConnectedDrive Store either online, in the MyBMW App or directly from the car.

BMW covers the necessary data usage from the package.

There was a lot of news about in-car gaming a few years ago, first when Tesla boss Elon Musk said that its Model S sedan could run the modern and graphically difficult video game The Witcher 3 and more recently when it added Steam compatibility.

Steam is a video game store and distribution platform and now Teslas with 16 gigabytes of RAM can download and play from a library of thousands of current-generation games.

Mercedes made news offering the casual Angry Birds smartphone game on its infotainment screen in 2023. Now at CES the luxury brand also announced a collaboration with retro games streaming service Antstream Arcade, which will integrate cloud gaming into the car.

The system is showcased in its 2024 E-Class sedan, and in an advanced future version demonstrated at CES.

Gaming formats are universal in their location within vehicles. Screens in front of the driver are not utilized. Instead, a centrally located infotainment screen and screens in front of the passenger
