  • How AREA15 Is Evolving Immersive Entertainment With Universal Horror Unleashed and More

    Las Vegas immersive entertainment hub AREA15 is turning five in a big way, celebrating the arrival of its second phase of development on September 17. Zone 2’s main attraction, Universal Horror Unleashed, opened its doors over the summer to attract seasonal tourists, but the rest of the offerings are following suit as the year draws out.

    After io9’s invited visit to Universal Horror Unleashed, io9 chatted with Mark Stutzman, AREA15’s chief technology officer, about the new way to experience Vegas through futuristic visions of participatory entertainment. And it all really started with rave culture.

    “The original idea was, ‘Let’s use it for festival grounds.’” Stutzman shared, “We decided it was too hot, and we put up a warehouse, and we said, ‘Let’s do festivals in the warehouse.’ And then we said, ‘Well, shoot, why don’t we kind of start creating this immersive destination?’ And that’s where it all started, and Zone One has just been insanely successful for us.”

    Meow Wolf, the raconteur of interactive art portals that have sprung up across the country, was only the beginning as Zone One’s first anchor.

    “Everyone who’s coming to AREA15 is coming [for] immersive experiences, right? Like, that’s their whole goal. And so obviously on the Zone One side, Meow Wolf is our anchor tenant and they’ve done a great job of continuing to drive traffic,” he said.

    Zone One features a buffet of AR and VR games and visual walkthroughs among its neon-powered music, dining, and shopping selections. Stutzman continued, “We have 80 acres here to develop, and Universal is our anchor tenant in Zone Two out of a five-phase project. The entire district will be immersive experiences—it’ll be sports and entertainment; it’ll be great restaurants and all that good stuff. The thing that we’ve been leading into most recently is these kinds of IP-based immersive experiences because you get kind of the brand recognition—the emotional connection—and then we bring not only the experience of building immersive experiences that are engaging.”

    Area15 is carving its own tech-forward frontier that’s more attractive to Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z than big E-ticket-esque major IP hubs. Universal Horror Unleashed, like Meow Wolf, leans into AREA15’s fun parallel dimension to the Strip’s casino nostalgia. Meow Wolf’s premise is that it’s a portal to other realms beyond its sci-fi-tinged grocery storefront; you have to look beyond for ways to break through and discover its genre-mashing labyrinths of cosmic and fantasy adventure.

    Similarly, Universal’s desert warehouse of horrors acts like a storage facility of the studio’s lore that, because it was placed on AREA15’s dimensional rift-inspired land, brings the monsters to life in their wheelhouse of terrors. Stutzman elaborated, “We built a lot of these experiences and we leaned heavily into AR and VR and all this other cool tech but it’s really tech that should be the enabler. What should be most forward are the performances and the experience and the story and the emotional connectivity to the content, which is why we’re leaning more into the IP now. It just really works well and Universal is a testament to that. I mean, [it owns] some of the strongest IP in horror.”

    The alternate universe thread is more for those who seek it out with Easter eggs in zone one that speak to it but the retailers within aren’t necessarily going to crossover with each other; it’s just a delightful nugget of lore that brings a sort of otherworldly, futuristic, multi-dimensional edge to the space.

    “We’ll have similar in Three and Four and Five, but we’ll have other cool stuff that we launched, like The John Wick Experience, which is a partnership with Lionsgate, another incredibly strong IP owner. John Wick has been insanely successful, kind of beyond our models,” he said of the Continental Las Vegas. You can’t stay there because, well, things get hairy as soon as you try to check in—since you arrive at the same time as John during one of his tiffs against the high table.

    “We love kind of doing over the top and Zone Two is going to be crazy with all the different experiences,” Stutzman said of the ongoing development. It will include an interdimensional creature carousel, a drop ride, and a hollowed-out plane with its own fake universe airline concept. But a big thing for the CTO is that at the heart of the tech there are still artists at work.

    “Art has obviously always been a big part of who we are so we really wanted to tie into it and we’ll we’ll actually have art tours. And we don’t want to lean into it in a cheesy way. We want to lean into it in a serious way because it’s quite an impressive collection.”

    He also noted that AREA15 seeks to cultivate Las Vegas’ art scene through community art events in addition to festival installations surrounding the outdoor plane areas. “We’ll have lots of musicians under there just entertaining and then we’re also going to throw raves but it’s really going to be an amazing space.”

    SDCC 2024 has begun to reveal its schedule for the convention happening in San Diego this month, including a panel celebrating Interview With the Vampire and AMC’s Immortal Universe. The full slate of events will be revealed this weekend.

    Another big Southern California fan gathering, Halloween and horror convention Midsummer Scream, will be held at the Long Beach Convention Center July 26-28.

    Willy’s Candy Spectacular Premiere

    Willy’s Candy Spectacular: A Musical Parody of the infamous “immersive” Willy Wonka pop-up disaster has set its director for its Edinburgh Fringe run. The musical will be helmed by filmmaker and theatrical director Andy Fickman, known for cult fave Heathers: The Musical and movies like She’s the Man and The Game Plan.

    “I can’t stress enough what a thrill it was when the brilliant Richard Kraft asked me to direct Willy’s Candy Spectacular: A Musical Parody. Aside from just loving candy, I fell in love with these songs—written by some of the best in the business,” Fickman said in a press release. “On a personal note, one of my first jobs in Hollywood was Director of Development for Gene Wilder, the original Willy Wonka, so this opportunity feels like a very sweet return home.” The show runs August 9-26.

    Layoffs at Meow Wolf will impact the immersive art and entertainment group’s Denver location.

    On Wednesday, 50 positions at the Convergence Station were eliminated across multiple areas of the company. 

    Meow Wolf announced on Monday that it would reduce its workforce by 165 employees amid plans to cut expenses by 10%.

    A total of 111 employees across the exhibition and corporate teams were cut. Roles in Denver accounting for nearly half of those eliminated positions, including creative operators, security leads and IT. 

    “When we’re being run by a bunch of corporatists who live in New York City and California … we’re getting these kinds of draconian decisions like this that don’t take into account at all our community, our friends, our coworkers,” said Jerome Morrison, secretary-treasurer for Meow Wolf Workers Collective (MWWC), the union representing its employees. 

    What other cost-saving measures are being taken?

    In a meeting on Thursday, leaders shared that Meow Wolf’s entire executive team, including CEO Jose Tolosa and each of his direct reports, will reduce their compensation by 10% for the remainder of the year. 

    “It’s not necessarily that these cuts were a result of low visitation,” said Ru Johnson, public relations manager for Denver Meow Wolf. “It was based on the actual structure of the business model.”

    Additional cost-saving measures include:

    • Closing Meow Wolf’s New York City office
    • Scrapping plans to open an LA office
    • Eliminating software contracts
    • Reducing spending on professional services
    • Reducing travel and other expenditures across the board by close to $1 million.

    Another 54 employees from the bargaining unit in Las Vegas were also set to be eliminated, but the union “successfully paused Las Vegas Union layoffs by demanding the company fulfill its obligation to bargain changes in good faith due to the ongoing collective bargaining at that location.”

    “We are working to mediate these layoffs,” MWWC added in a statement. “But in Santa Fe and Denver, Meow Wolf is choosing to continue its pattern of not bargaining in good faith and it is actively pursuing its shameful, fruitless union containment strategies.”

    The union statement outlined that Meow Wolf has refused to listen to their alternative suggestions to layoffs, a point included in both the Denver and Santa Fe collective bargaining agreements. These suggestions include voluntary pay decreases, resignations and limiting the number of outside contract workers. 

    Morrison said there’s an issue with outside contractors being hired at higher salaries than those paid in-house. 

    “Our CBA says those folks are supposed to be the first ones to be let go, particularly if it’s the work of people who are within our unit,” Morrison said. “That’s one of the areas that we’re not seeing.” 

    When did Meow Wolf Denver unionize?

    Employees at Convergence Station in Denver announced plans to unionize in July 2022. The location originally opened in September 2021. 

    Denver’s original collective bargaining agreement took into consideration what happened during the pandemic layoffs from 2019, which the company described as COVID-19-related challenges.

    Morrison said employees at the time did not find any “rhyme or reason” for why the company chose to lay off certain employees when accounting for years of experience and knowledge. 

    What the CEO says is ‘right-sizing the business,’ union leaders see as ‘writing on the wall’

    When Meow Wolf CEO Jose Tolosa informed employees of the layoffs via email, he said the reductions are an effort to “right-size” the business. 

    “When we opened our first exhibitions, we were inventing an operating model from scratch,” Tolosa wrote. “Over the past three years, we’ve developed a better understanding of our guests and what we need to staff and support our exhibitions in order to make the most of the growth opportunities ahead, including our Houston location that opens later this year.”

    The New Mexico-based company employs people in corporate offices located in Los Angeles and New York, as well as four exhibition spaces in Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Denver and a new Dallas-Fort Worth area location that opened July 2023

    The expense cuts and workforce reduction come after the company laid off eight members of its corporate team in December

    According to Morrison, who has worked at Meow Wolf for more than five years, those closely watching the situation have seen “the writing on the wall” regarding Denver’s decline in visitations. 

    “Our hourly workers have been drastically reduced to very minimum hours and not even really given any guaranteed schedule,” Morrison said.

    The MWWC has filed a number of Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), including one in Denver back in March for “Bad Faith Bargaining” that remains open.  

    “In short, the company refuses to work with us when problems arise,” the statement reads. “We are calling on the company to reinstate these employees now. We are asking Meow Wolf to cease its practices of skirting the union and failing to see us as equal partners in the operations of our company.” 

    In response to the Union complaints, Johnson provided the following statement:

    “Meow Wolf complied with the layoff provisions of its Santa Fe CBA and its Denver CBA, by providing proper notice, considering the Union’s proposals, and providing the agreed-upon separation benefits to impacted bargaining unit members. Both collective bargaining agreements also provide that after going through this process, the final decision regarding a layoff rests with Meow Wolf.”

    Vegas has a history of over the top attractions delighting and engaging the millions of tourists. From stars like Elvis and Celine to the Chihuly ceiling to the the highest roller coaster in the world, the city constantly thinks of ways of engaging the daily throng of visitors. The latest, The Sphere, is the VERY expensive world’s largest spherical structure and concert venue. The $2 billion globe is kicking it off with U2 in residence. Every night is an incredible visual as the sphere is also a giant screen with a variety of innovative imagines.

    But hot on the heels on the Sphere is Cannabition, a state of the art cannabis immersive experience opening next to Planet 13.  With 90% of the country open to some form of legal cannabis, this should turn out to be a key attraction – like Kentucky and their bourbon! The 12,000 square-foot cannabis immersive experience has engaged creators to make the experience incredible with or without a little extra (wink wink).

    But the founders aren’t stopping there.

    The immersive experience just made a significant partnership announcement. Cannabition is welcoming legendary founding figure of outlaw country, Mr. Willie Nelson and his celebrated brand, Willie’s Reserve. The teams are putting their heads together to assure guests a “stoned-cold good time!”

    Nelson, an icon of music and marijuana, has spent 7 decades changing the way people look at cannabis and has been a champion of legalization.

    His team shared, “with our new partnership in Cannabition, Willie’s Reserve is looking ahead with anticipation for a chance to bring Willie Nelson’s dream for legal weed to a new immersive experience in legendary Las Vegas. Now that’s entertainment!”

    Vegas in 2022, had 38.8 million visitors. Sin City ranks fifth worldwide in terms of worldwide tourism-related, and first in the US. In 2015, 84% of visitors to came from within the US.

    Managing Partner Pamela Hart, states “From inception to buildout our partners, sponsors, and creative teams are launching an over the top Vegas immersive experience and a must add to everyone’s visit”.

    Also joining the Cannabition team is LP Exotics. Founded by Marianna Arakelyan, who comes from the healthcare industry, Marianna has been at the forefront of pioneering life-enhancing programs across the Western United States.

    Managing Parnter Andrew Laub shares,  “Marianna Arakelyan has taken her expertise and passion to create opulent, tailor-made products to delight consumers.  The company and Arakelyan’s innovative and meticulous approach will be another asset to delight for the visitors.”

    Michael Stratton, the general manager, brings a wealth of entertainment and hospitality knowledge. Most recently, Michael was the General Manager and Director of A&R for the iconic indie record label Bong Load Records, where he managed specialty releases by artists like The Killers, Beck, Elliott Smith and James Blunt, among others. He is also major label recording artist himself, a 35-year Las Vegas resident and has lifetime of music industry and operations experience.

    Board Member Alex Brough believes Vegas will be home to the premier cannabis attraction and will add to the list of unique opportunities for tourists like Meow Wolf, the Mob Museum, and the extraordinary culinary scene.
