  • Houston Concert Watch 12/26: George Clinton, Erykah Badu and More – Houston Press

    [ad_1]

Thanksgiving 1976 was one for the ages in San Francisco.  The 5,000 people lucky enough to score tickets for The Band’s “Last Waltz” concert attended maybe the best rock and roll party ever.

A full Thanksgiving dinner was served to kick things off, followed by ballroom dancing and readings from Beat poets like Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Michael McClure.  Then came the concert itself, which began with a 12-song set from The Band.  Then it was time for (musical) dessert, as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jone Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters and others joined The Band to celebrate their shared musical heritage.  In all, over four hours of incredible and historic music making.

Firing up the Martin Scorsese film which documented the event as part of your Thanksgiving celebration is a fine idea.  The Last Waltz looks great, and the audio is excellent considering the era.  However, don’t be sucked in by the myth that is created by Scorsese and Band guitarist Robbie Robertson.  Each man wanted out of the collaboration.  As a mega music fan Scorsese wanted a path into the world of rock and roll.  Robertson, on the other hand, was looking to get into the movie business.

All well and good, but Robertson had unilaterally made the decision to terminate The Band’s performing career, and the other members of the group – particularly drummer / vocalist Levon Helm) were not happy about it.  This accounts for their collective glum demeanor during most of the film’s interview segments, and it also explains Robertson’s desire to cast (with Scorsese’s help) The Band as musicians who had given their all for their art and were simply too depleted – physically and emotionally – to continue any longer.

In point of fact, The Band had not toured all that much during its existence, certainly not in comparison to bluesmen like Muddy Waters.  Sure, business travel of any kind is taxing and not all the fun that it’s cracked up to be, but don’t buy dramatic (and probably pre-scripted) Robertson quotes like, “16 years on the road. The numbers start to scare you.  I mean, I couldn’t live with 20 years on the road. I don’t think I could even discuss it.”

As a footnote, check out Scorsese during the interview segments.  Remind you of anybody?  If you said, “Marty DiBergi from Spinal Tap!” go to the head of the class.  But – to quote the esteemed Mr. DiBergi – enough of my yakkin’. Whaddaya say? Let’s boogie!

    Ticket Alert

San Angelo’s purveyors of Texican rock and roll, Los Lonely Boys, kind of wandered in the desert (maybe literally, considering their location) for several years after hitting it big with the single “Heaven.”  After taking a lengthy break, the Garza brothers checked the balance in their bank accounts, got back together and released a new album (Resurrection) last year.  Tickets are on sale now for their concert at the House of Blues on Saturday, February 14.

Also performing on Valentine’s Day is Houston’s own Kat Edmonson, whose “Only the Bare Essentials” tour promises intimate evenings in which “[s]ubtlety and nuance will be served up as main courses for this show, and the music, so delicately played, will leave you feeling entirely full.”  Wow, that’s a lot to swallow!  You can get tickets now for Edmonson’s show on Saturday, February 14, at the Heights Theater.

    YouTube video

Wolfmother will play at the House of Blues on Monday, June 8, marking the 20th anniversary of the band’s debut album, and tickets are on sale now.  Though the band has been hounded (sorry) by accusation of classic rock appropriation, that’s a bit off the mark.  Sure, you can tell that these guys listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath growing up, but is that such a bad thing?

After working behind the scenes in the music business as a songwriter and producer for several years, Meghan Trainor’s solo career took off with 2014’s “All About That Bass,” a song that flipped the gender of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and threw in some body-positivity messages for good measure.  Trainor’s “Get in Girl” tour will stop at Toyota Center on Tuesday, July 28, and tickets are on sale now.

Much like the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett before him, Jack Johnson has made a career by creating a surf-and-sand vibe that is easy to listen to and not terribly demanding.  But hey, he comes by it honestly, having been raised in Hawaii and making a name for himself as a professional surfer during his teenage years.   Johnson will perform on Friday, August 28, at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, so get yourself a pocketful of edibles and get ready.

    Concerts This Week

    YouTube video

While the following week will be occupied with Thanksgiving-related activities, there are a few options available if you and your cool cousins want to get out of the house for a bit.  On Friday, OG funkster George Clinton will perform at the House of Blues along with Parliament-Funkadelic. George is 84 years old, so you might want to catch his act while you can.  But, as “Flashlight” says, “most of all, most of all” this show represents the opportunity to experience some 100 proof funk as dispensed by the master.

    YouTube video

The always unpredictable and irrepressible Erykah Badu will play two nights, Friday and Saturday, this week at the 713 Music Hall.  Badu’s “Return of Automatic Slim” tour marks the 25th anniversary of her album Mama’s Gun, and indications are that “reimaginings” of some of the disc’s tracks will be on the set list.  Hope she doesn’t stray too far from the original arrangements – they were classics.

    YouTube video

Think you might need some honky-tonk after all that turkey and dressing?  Then Shoeshine Charley’s Big Top Lounge is your spot on Friday, when Dale Watson and His Lonestars will be tending the flame of traditional country music.  How rootsy is Watson?  He opened a recording studio in Memphis with the original board from Sun Studio, where Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lewis produced all of their early hits.  Now that’s hardcore.

  • “ADHD” According to Paris Hilton: “That’s Hot”

“ADHD” According to Paris Hilton: “That’s Hot”

    [ad_1]

Building on the growing arsenal of singles and videos that Paris Hilton has thus far released from her second album, Infinite Icon, “ADHD” marks the fourth single from the record. And, noticeably, it’s the first single to not rely on a feature from someone more legitimate in the music industry to buttress it (with “I’m Free,” it was Rina Sawayama; with “Chasin,” it was Meghan Trainor; with “BBA,” it was Megan Thee Stallion). As such, it makes sense that Hilton would pull out even more stops than usual for the video, directed by photographer/graphic designer Brian Ziff (who was responsible for Hilton’s album cover visuals, and has previously worked with the likes of Cardi B and Rico Nasty on other photoshoots).

To mimic the “vibe” of what it feels like to have ADHD, the video immediately starts with a frenetic barrage of various images behind Hilton as she starts to get overwhelmed by all the thoughts she’s having—all the synapses that are firing back and forth. She then appears against a black backdrop (as though to indicate that the noise has briefly quieted) wearing light-up fairy wings (or butterfly, depending on your personal preference). Indeed, Hilton is known to wear such a winged prop for various events and photo opportunities, but, in truth, her fellow 00s icon, Britney Spears, has always been the one with the fairy fetish. And, speaking of Spears, “ADHD” definitely bears the sound of a cheesy Spears ballad from one of her earlier albums (think: “Don’t Let Me Be The Last to Know”)—though it clearly wants to believe it qualifies as being of an “Everytime” caliber (Spears’ strongest ballad, unquestionably).

On the subject of “Everytime,” the video for “ADHD” also does its best to convey a certain “mental illness steez.” This being played up by a slew of dancers outfitted in white lace body stockings and matching face coverings that lend a “creepy” (for Paris Hilton standards) aura as they writhe and wriggle erratically in a manner intended to connote the manic nature of ADHD (though it kind of looks like the similarly erratic choreography from Jennifer Lopez’s “Hearts and Flowers” segment in This Is Me… Now: A Love Story). This happening as she “belts out,” “Sometimes I can’t deny it/So I just keep on trying/Sometimes I wanna crumble/Sometimes I’m gonna stumble/My mind is always running/Sometimes I feel like crying.”

In the end, of course, she realizes that her “superpower” all along has been ADHD. Not a curse, but a blessing that makes her see and process the world in a much more “special” way than everyone else (well, that and being an Aquarius). Hilton remarks upon this “special,” extrasensory worldview right at the outset of her memoir, Paris, when she says, “Dr. Edward Hallowell, author of Driven to Distraction, says the ADHD brain is like a Ferrari with bicycle brakes: powerful but difficult to control. My ADHD makes me lose my phone, but it also makes me who I am, so if I’m going to love my life, I have to love my ADHD.” Of course, it’s also easy to love one’s life—ADHD or not—when they have oodles of cash, but anyway

While some might be wondering what a Lolitacore aesthetic (rampant throughout the video) has to do with ADHD, they obviously don’t understand that “looking hot” is not out of the question for such a serious subject matter. As Hilton also notes in her memoir, “My brain chemistry craves sensory input. Sounds, images, puzzles, art, motion, experiences—everything that triggers adrenaline or endorphins—that’s all as necessary as oxygen for the ADHD brain.” That certainly explains the barrage of sensory overloaded, sexually charged images in “ADHD,” complete with Hilton also seeming to take some inspo from Spears’ 1999 Rolling Stone photoshoot with David LaChapelle, especially via her “boudoir” scenes being punctuated by pink hues and satin sheets (on another side note: LaChapelle directed the abovementioned “Everytime” video).

Other “scenarios” in the video find Hilton standing in the middle of a hall of mirrors or against a black backdrop seemingly projecting “vintage” scenes from the 00s (there even appears to be a moment where Lindsay Lohan is projected on one of the screens behind her—unless, of course, it’s just a lookalike. And yet, it wouldn’t be out of the question considering Hilton recently said she wouldn’t rule out doing a remix song with Lohan à la Charli and Lorde).

She serves more Britney imagery by perching on a swing in a style that harkens back to Spears in the “From the Bottom of My Broken Heart” video…and Lana Del Rey during the “Video Games” portion of any live show she plays. Granted, Paris’ “special swing” has a giant half-moon decoration on it and, in contrast to Britney and Lana, Paris is, naturally, sporting more Lolitacore lingerie while on it.

As for the continuation of subliminally projected images behind her that seem to borrow from TMZ’s vault of 00s footage, there’s another blink-and-you’ll-miss-it image in particular that shows Paris on the illustrious November night in 2006 (you can tell by the outfit) when her photo was snapped thousands of times as she drove away from the Beverly Hills Hotel with Spears and Lohan in tow. And so, perhaps projecting these images of the past behind her in a fast-paced, extremely subconscious way is meant to prove another point about ADHD from her book: “Because my attention span is limited, I don’t see time as linear; the ADHD brain processes past, present and future as a Spirograph of interconnected events…” Either that or she knows that playing up her 00s era at any chance she gets will always be her bread and butter (“Is butter a carb?”).

It also seems as though Hilton has been of the belief that ADHD is a superpower for a while now, having immortalized that thought in her memoir with the declaration, “Some of us have discovered that ADHD is our superpower.” So clearly, the lyrics have been brewing for quite some time. Though she seems to have lifted the uber narcissistic line, “My superpower was right inside, see/So thank you to me/Thank you to me/Thank you to me,” from Snoop Dogg accepting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018. Or Meghan Trainor on this year’s “I Wanna Thank Me,” which samples Niecy Nash’s Emmy award acceptance speech (itself ostensibly inspired by Snoop). But, occasionally narcissistic or not, Hilton wants everyone to know that ADHD is what got her to where she is today, not winning the birth lottery.

‘All About That Bass’: Meghan Trainor joins WTOP with Md. native Chris Olsen before Jiffy Lube Live – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

Meghan Trainor brings her “Timeless” tour to Jiffy Lube Live in Virginia on Tuesday, Sept. 17 alongside Chevy Chase, Maryland, native Chris Olsen.

WTOP’s Jason Fraley previews Meghan Trainor & Chris Olsen at Jiffy Lube Live (Part 1)

She’s all about that bass, no treble — and he’s all about returning to his home base, no trouble.

Meghan Trainor brings her “Timeless” tour to Jiffy Lube Live in Virginia on Tuesday alongside singer, actor and TikTok guru Chris Olsen, who grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

“I feel like I’ve listened to this [radio station] so many times in my life,” Olsen told WTOP. “This would be the radio that I’m pretty sure would be on every morning driving to school. This is D.C. This is it. We’ve made it.”

“Chris’ hometown!’ Trainor told WTOP. “He came on my podcast called ‘Workin’ On It’ and we realized our birthdays were the same exact date, Dec. 22, so we fell in love like, ‘Whoa, we’re soul mates, we are the same person.’ We’ve been inseparable ever since and I hired him to help me with my TikToks and be my best friend.”

While Olsen was born in D.C., Trainor was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and grew up listening to 2000s pop.

“I was listening to T-Pain, I loved T-Pain,” Trainor said. “I was listening to whatever my brothers put on, then sometimes I would get to have a say and put Britney Spears on, but luckily my brothers loved the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC with me so we would all listen to that together. Then my dad would play us old-school music, so we would listen to Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. Then my mom would play a lot of Madonna and Billy Joel.”

In 2014, she signed with Epic Records for her first album “Title” (2015) with hits like “Dear Future Husband” and “Lips Are Movin.’” Trainor co-wrote the songs with Baltimore native Kevin Kadish, who attended Owings Mills High School and created his own music management major at the University of Maryland in College Park.

“I was 18 I think and I was living in Nashville and I drove to Franklin to write with a guy named Kevin Kadish,” Trainor said. “We were working together on the whole album and just kept getting confused by what we were hearing from the label and managers. We were hearing different things, so we were like, ‘Let’s write a song to them saying, ‘Your lips are movin’, I know you’re lying because your lips are movin’, you just talk in circles.’”

Of course, the album’s biggest pop hit was the catchy No. 1 smash “All About That Bass.”

“[Kevin] had a title in his notes that said ‘all bass, no treble,’ and I was like, ‘Well, all the kids say, ‘I’m all about that’ when they’re saying I like something, and literally I’m all about my booty, my thickness and I got no treble,” Trainor said. “Like in music, bass is thick and treble is the thin, high parts … so I was like, ‘I’m all about that thick,’ you know? Then we wrote it that day in 45 minutes and I was like, ‘No one is ever gonna hear this.’”

“All About That Bass” was not only nominated for song of the year at the Grammys, it was also nominated for the top prize of Record of the Year alongside Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off,” Sia’s “Chandelier,” Iggy Azalea and Charlie XCX’s “Fancy” and Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” which ultimately won.

“He got me,” Trainor said. “I’ve never felt cooler. I was like fan-girling the whole night. I was living at like Park La Brea [in Los Angeles] and I was like, ‘What am I doing here?’ It was the best night of my life.”

The following year, Trainor returned to the Grammys to win best new artist just a few months before the release of her second album “Thank You” (2016), featuring the hit single “No.”

Her third album “Treat Myself” (2020) delivered even more hits with “No Excuses” and “Nice to Meet Ya” featuring Nicki Minaj, followed by her Seth MacFarlane duet “White Christmas” on her holiday album “A Very Trainor Christmas” (2020). Her fifth album “Takin’ it Back” (2022) delivered the hit song “Made You Look” with funny turns of phrases like, “Call up your chiropractor just in case your neck breaks.”

Now, her latest album “Timeless” just dropped in June with the single “Been Like This” featuring T-Pain.

“‘Been Like This,’ thank you for playing it on the radio,” Trainor said. “‘Whoops’ is one of my favorites, that’s been playing on the radio recently so thank you, then we just released the deluxe, which has my favorite songs: ‘Make a Move,’ ‘Booty’ and ‘Criminals,’ which is also in the new TV show ‘The Perfect Couple,’ which is my dream come true. It’s crazy seeing all these famous talented actors [like Nicole Kidman] dancing to my pop song.”

At this point, they had to run to get ready for their next show, doing makeup in the green room.

“I’m starting my makeup, so I have beautiful, blue, glittery eyes right now,” Trainor said. “You should do that for your hometown. For the hometown, if you show up, Chris is going to have gorgeous makeup that I’m gonna do.”

“Meghan is the makeup artist for this tour, so she is doing it for me as well,” Olsen said. “I’m ready. If people show up for the show, I will show up with the glittery makeup. … My parents still live in Maryland, so I’m still a DMV girl.”

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To

    [ad_1]

It’s a week before Thanksgiving, which means we have been thrust into the holiday season whether we were ready or not. While you’re gearing up to see your family and friends for your obligatory annual catch-up conversations, we need new music now more than ever. Because there are travels to be completed, and soothing is needed.

And as I previously mentioned, it’s holiday season- which means many artists will be releasing holiday tracks to get you in the spirit. Compiling songs from Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist, the countless press releases flooding my email, and doing my own investigations, we have yet another week’s worth of new music ready!

That’s right, I’ve got a fresh playlist of songs you didn’t know you needed in your life. Whether you have Friendsgivings to attend, clubs to dance in, or are just staying in on this lovely November Friday, there’s always a good time to find new tunes.

We’ve got no time to spare, so let’s get listening!

    Lauren Spencer Smith- “Santa Baby”

Lauren Spencer Smith is one of the most exciting rising stars in pop music right now. She can spin any track into gold, whether it be a ballad, or a rock-inspired pop dance tune. Now, she’s here with a taste of the holidays for us with a rendition of “Santa Baby”- her clear, concise vocals are flawless, haunting, and flirty.

She’s fully in holiday season…releasing a cover of “Hallelujah” earlier this month and releasing “Broke Christmas” alongside her “Santa Baby” cover. It begs the question: is there anything she can’t do?

    Sabrina Carpenter- fruitcake

Another woman in the music industry having a massive year is Sabrina Carpenter, who went viral on TikTok for her “Nonsense” outros on tour, both her own and opening for Taylor Swift. Coming off her fifth studio album with emails i can’t send in 2022, Carpenter is establishing herself as the “next big popstar.”

She’s here with her holiday EP, fruitcake, with six festive songs that are uniquely Carpenter. You can get tired of the same old holiday cheer songs over and over, but Sabrina Carpenter’s fruitcake proves there’s still ground to be broken in the holiday song category.

Jimmy Fallon, Meghan Trainor- “Wrap Me Up”

Jimmy Fallon and Meghan Trainor team up for a light-hearted track during the gifting season. Begging for you to “wrap me up” because she’s the “whole damn package”, you get the classic Meghan Trainor sound and vibe. Plus, any track adding Jimmy Fallon is guaranteed to be instantaneously exciting.

What I love about Meghan Trainor’s music is that it truly is all about having fun and feeling your best. It’s an infectious, often viral method that gets everyone dancing whether they wanted to or not. “Wrap Me Up” is no exception , which is no surprise.

    Chloe Stroll, “Homesick”

Chloe Stroll is one of Popdust’s favorites for a good reason: she has an honest approach to making quality music that is both relatable and easy to listen to. Her new single, “Homesick”, is proof that she is willing to work hard to create these borderline perfect tracks and shows her growth as a new artist in the industry. She sings about yearning for someone’s love, being homesick for them.

It’s a pop sound with synths and, of course, a hint of piano. It exhibits her vocal range and you can hear the emotion through each chorus as she launches in. If you need an introduction to Chloe Stroll, this is the song for you.

    Elle Darlington- “christmas is you”

Elle Darlington has a soulful, ethereal tone that is reminiscent of pop divas we know and love. You wonder if there is a note she can’t hit as she effortlessly glides through “christmas is you”. She delivers a dreamy bedroom pop Christmas song that makes you want to go out in the snow and romanticize your holiday season. Darlington says,

“Christmas has always been my favorite time of year. This songreflects the thing I love most about Christmas – being with my family and friends. So many of my idols including Mariah & Ariana have been the soundtrack to my favorite festive memories; so it’s super exciting that ‘christmas is you’ could play a part in making those memories for other people.”

    DRAMA- “As I Am”

“As I Am” is the latest single off of DRAMA’s Til We Die EP that offers high energy and otherworldly sound, sending you straight to the club dance floor. Til We Die is one of DRAMA’s best bodies of work to date, and “As I Am” perfectly encapsulates all the album has to offer. It’s like stepping into a haze in the best way possible, listening feels like the ultimate escape.

DRAMA delivers electronic R&B that includes thought-provoking lyrics and refreshing beats…melding into catchy club tracks that make you want to go out all night long. “As I Am” is a peek into a tortured love affair, masked by a celestial, entrancing sound.

Meghan Trainor, working mom! The singer spoke to the hosts of “Today” on Friday about how motherhood pushes her to focus on the legacy of her music — and she brought 1-year-old Riley along for the ride.

“Everything is much more important,” she said ahead of her performance with Riley and her husband, Daryl Sabara, in the audience. “Every song is much more important. I think of him — when he’s 10 years old, he’s going to hear these songs and I want him to be proud.”

Little Riley waved his hands from his dad’s arms in the crowd, wearing protective headphones and clutching a toy car. “I look at him and I’m like, ‘Oh, I need three more,’ you know? You just want more of him,” she said.

Trainor’s newest album, Takin’ It Back, is out now and was largely inspired by Riley. “It means so much, I hope everyone gets a chance to listen to the whole album,” she said. “It’s finally out and there’s a special song on there called ‘Superwoman’ for my mommas, my working mommas.”

In terms of wanting more, the couple has big plans. “I would love twins,” Trainor told Romper last month. “A two-for-one deal.”

She added that they’ve talked about turning their attic into a schoolroom for Riley and any future kids they’ll add to the family.

“I want to hire a preschool teacher that will be able to teach emotions,” she said of her dreams for a homeschooling experience. “How to handle it when you want to freak out and scream, because they don’t usually do that.”

    CNN
     —

Meghan Trainor sat down with CNN to discuss life after “All About That Bass,” her new album and the importance of self-love.

The American singer-songwriter joined CNN’s “Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace?” this week to discuss her fifth studio album, “Takin’ It Back,” which was released on Friday.

The album is full of upbeat pop songs like “Made You Look.” But throughout the album, Trainor also touches on difficult topics, like her shifting relationship with her body and self-esteem after becoming a mother.

“I noticed the first few songs were kind of heartbreaking. They were sad at first,” she said. “And I was like, no, I’m happier than I’ve ever been. Why am I sad?”

“Remind Me,” the 15th track on the album, started as a meditation on how “it’s really hard being covered in scars,” said Trainor. The musician welcomed the birth of her first child via Caesarean section in February 2021.

“And it’s me singing to my husband, because he tells me all the time, I’m pretty and I’m like, I feel like with the stretch marks and the C-section, I feel like I’ve been ripped apart. And it took me a while to like myself again and to be able to look at my body after all that scarring,” she said.

The album also touches on “mom guilt” and the difference between social media and reality, like in the song “Don’t I Make It Look Easy.”

“My first songs were like about being a mom and about like, don’t I make this look easy,” Trainor said. “I’m exhausted. And I’m a working mom and I have mom guilt. And I tried to make them relatable and put them in every song.”

Trainor has historically been a “melody queen,” starting each song with a melody, she says. But on this album, she focused more on the lyrics and message behind each tune.

“I would sit on my piano a lot before the songwriting session, I would do homework, and I would have an idea,” she said. “And, luckily, it worked every single time, but I was like, I’ll do a chorus and then I’ll let the songwriters come in and we’ll craft.”

Self-love is a recurring theme throughout the 16 songs on the album.

“It’s the hardest thing, and that’s why I write all these self love songs because I’m like, believe in yourself,” she said. “You’re amazing.”
