It was a revelation that took viewers’ breath away: during 2021’s interview special, Oprah With Meghan and Harry, Meghan Markle made a bombshell claim while her husband, Prince Harry, waited in the wings. Speaking with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex said that members of the royal household expressed concerns about the skin color of her unborn son, Archie. Now a new book about the royals claims that, Markle told King Charles III the names of the royal household members who made those remarks—but repercussions of that revelation remain unclear.
Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, is Black; Markle also identifies as a person of color. But when she became pregnant, she told Winfrey in 2021, members of the royal household informed her that her child with Harry, “the first member of color in this family,” would not be “titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be.”
“We have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title,’” Markle said. “And also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”
“It was really hard to be able to see those as compartmentalized conversations, that if you were to be brown that would be a problem,” she said.
When Harry joined Markle and Oprah couch, he said that conversations about the color of his kids’ skin began even before the pair married in 2018. “What will the kids look like?” he said he was asked as the relationship between the prince and the actress became serious.
“That was right at the beginning when she wasn’t going to get security, when members of my family were suggesting that she carries on acting because there’s not enough money to pay for her,” he said. “There were some clear, obvious signs that this was going to be very hard.”
During the interview, they declined to name who within the royal inner circle brought up these racially loaded concerns, with Harry saying “That conversation I’m never going to share.” But according to a new book by chronicler-to-the-royals Omid Scobie, those discussions were indeed shared with at least one person: King Charles.
Scobie’s book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, doesn’t come out until November 28, but slews of details from the “highly controversial and potentially defamatory” (per the Times) work are already being revealed in the U.K. press. That includes the news that in a series of private letters Markle wrote to Charles in the spring of 2021, she named the members of the household who made the problematic remarks, the Sun reports.
As part of those letters, Markle told Charles that “unconscious bias and ignorance” were at play within the royal household, and needed to be addressed. In letters in response, Charles told her “he felt ‘no ill will’ or ‘casual prejudice’ had been involved,” the Sun reports.
Following the Winfrey interview, Buckingham Palace also released a brief statement addressing the claims. “The issues raised, particularly of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”

Back in 2017, it appeared that Kate and Meghan took an instant liking to each other. In Prince Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare, the royal expanded on the heated exchange, which began when Kate reached out to Meghan about Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress for the upcoming royal wedding. “Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy,” Kate’s text said, according to the book. “She cried when she tried it on a home.”
“Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am. Here. At KP,” Meghan replied, according to Harry. “Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?” Middleton then said it wouldn’t be “sufficient” and that it needed to be completely remade instead.
Although Middleton eventually had the dress altered, The Duke of Sussex came home and “found Meg on the floor. Sobbing,” he wrote. The following day, Harry recalled that Middleton apologized and brought over flowers and a card.
“Everyone in the institution knew it wasn’t true,” Meghan told Oprah in 2021. “I’m not sharing that piece about Kate in any way to be disparaging to her. I think it’s really important for people to understand the truth.”
Royal Expert Omid Scobie revealed in his upcoming book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, that Kate “watched in silence” as the narrative played out in the British media. Although Kate offered an apology, “the damage from the public rift was already done.” So, where do Kate and Meghan stand in 2023?

The British journalist added that Kate and Meghan have had “almost zero direct communication” since 2019, but that they’ve shared “short pleasantries” over the years.”
According to the book, which comes out on Nov. 28, there is reportedly no prospect of reconciliation between Kate and Meghan. Scobie suggests that Kate is not inclined to heal her relationship with Prince Harry, either.
The two appeared alongside their estranged husbands and the rest of the royal family at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last year. It also marked the first time Meghan was seen publicly with her niece and nephew since she and Prince Harry stepped away from their royal duties in 2020.
The Duchess was noticeably absent from King Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in May 2023. Scobie wrote that Archie’s birthday “played a factor in the decision” for Meghan’s absence, while Harry thought it would be a “fairly quick trip to the UK.” Ultimately, Meghan did not want to “dive back into the soap opera of the court,” according to Scobie.
Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival will hit bookshelves on Nov. 28.
It was her second time visiting the group, following up on a 2020 meeting at the same office.

We discussed the resiliency of girls as well as the resiliency required to do this work, and celebrated the achievements and stories of the women and girls at the table.”

“The work we do is not easy, and sometimes we forget to celebrate our accomplishments, and the exceptional achievements of the girls and young women who work with us,” Craig-Sparrow said. “These moments are important to our collective resiliency and the sustainability of our work.”
Markle has long partnered with groups that focus on women’s needs. In September, on her way out of Germany after the closing of the Invictus Games, Markle stopped in at a cafe whose profits go to helping unhoused women and teens. Markle’s Canadian jaunt with husband Prince Harry comes ahead of the 2025 Invictus Games, which will take place in Vancouver.

Meghan Markle made a surprise solo return to the red carpet Thursday night at Variety’s Power of Women event. Wearing a tan dress from Proenza Schouler, Aquazzura heels, and jewelry from Mejuri, the duchess addressed what’s to come for her production company Archewell — which has already released the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan and Finding Invictus—and hinted that she and husband Prince Harry have a few upcoming projects in response to a question about the type of programming she wants to make.

What’s in a name? Well, if you are a member of the British royal family, quite a lot. Royal names signify bloodlines, stability, and centuries of tradition. From Albert to Zara, each royal name has a story behind it, and its very own place in the history books.
The most popular royal names have become synonymous with the House of Windsor. Over the past 200 years, 12 British royals have been named Albert, which means “noble and bright.” Ten have shared the name George, which is of Greek origin and means “farmer.” There have been nine Victorias (the Latin word for “victory”), eight named Charles (Old English meaning “free man”), seven Marys and Edwards, and six named Louise and Alexandra. Other perpetually popular royal names include Alice, Elizabeth, Margaret, Charlotte, Arthur, William, and Henry.
Names for the reigning monarch tend to be repeated, unless a bad seed taints the name forever. There have been 11 King Edwards, eight King Henrys, and four King Williams. Conversely, there has been only one King John, probably due to his unpopularity as the monarch who was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. There was also only one King Stephen, who reigned over a contested throne from 1135–1154, leading to a brutal civil war.
Before the Norman invasion of 1066, English rulers had names that today seem outlandish. According to Britain’s Royal Families: The Complete Genealogy by Alison Weir, early Anglo-Saxon rulers included Athelstan, Eadred, Eadwig, and Aethelred. On the flip side, the Anglo-Saxons also introduced rulers named Edward. There were also two King Harolds, which resonates with the modern day. Harold, after all, was Prince William’s private nickname for his brother, Prince Harry.
Some have speculated about if there is a deeper meaning behind the nickname. After all, King Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king, was defeated by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The new Norman dynasty would bring a new set of names to the ruling family, including William, Henry, and Robert.
Since her death, there have been a lot of questions over Queen Elizabeth’s inheritances and who inherited her money and jewelry in the British royal family.
Queen Elizabeth II is the first child of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She became Queen of the United Kingdom as well as the other Commonwealth countries in February 1952 after the death of her father. She was 25 years old at the time. According to Us Weekly, though Diana’s will stated that her estate would be distributed to William and Harry when they turned 25, the funds were held until they were 30. Despite the hold, the brothers were still able to receive interest on their trust funds earlier. While Harry and William were the chief heirs of Diana’s estate, the People’s Princess’s will also listed others with whom she wanted to share her wealth, including her butler, Paul Burrell, as well as 17 of her godchildren, according to Worthy.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were seen offering their support to their friend Katy Perry as she graced the stage for her final residency show in Las Vegas over the weekend. The royal couple made a special trip to Sin City for the concert, which took place at The Theatre at Resorts World on Saturday night. They enthusiastically cheered for Perry, who was accompanied by her fiancé, Orlando Bloom.
The audience erupted with excitement as they spotted the royal pair being escorted to their seats just before the show began. Katy Perry is no stranger to performing in front of royalty, as she was among the performers at King Charles’s coronation concert in May of this year, where she delivered captivating renditions of her hit songs ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework.’

Celine Dion, who had been away from the public eye due to a severe illness, has made a surprise return to the public scene in Las Vegas. She was seen attending Katy Perry’s final show at the Resorts World Theatre on Saturday, sitting in the VIP section with her 13-year-old twin sons, Eddy and Nelson. Dion’s presence in the audience at Perry’s farewell performance garnered even more attention than the appearances of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Other notable figures spotted at Perry’s farewell concert, as reported by news outlets and fan videos, included Cameron Diaz and her husband, Benji Madden, a member of the band Good Charlotte, and Zoe Saldana.
The royal family was also skeptical. “Why doesn’t Edward let the TV people get on with it and just turn up to accept the cheques?” Prince Philip allegedly quipped. “He’s making us look foolish.”
For a time, it seemed Prince Philip’s assessment was correct. Ardent’s first credited production was 1995’s Real Tennis, a TV documentary focusing on an obscure aristocratic racquet game, which garnered 8,000 British viewers. Next was Annie’s Bar, a 1996 satire about backbenchers in the House of Commons. Canceled after one season, it was savaged by British critics as “fifth rate.”
Having lost money every year, Ardent Productions quickly changed their tune. “I never said we wouldn’t make programmes about the royal family,” Edward claimed in 1996. That year he would be the host of Edward on Edward, a documentary about his infamous great uncle Edward, the Duke of Windsor. This backflip was immediately seized on by the British media.
“He is neither a historian nor a journalist; as far as one can tell, his only qualification for the job is that he happens to have the same Christian name as his subject,” Francis Wheen wrote in The Guardian. “It is most generous of ITV to offer work to members of the royal family…Perhaps the whole gruesome clan should form a production company—the Really Useless Group—and start preparing a few sequels: Andrew on Andrew, in which the Duke of York chooses his favourite melodies from the musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber…and Queen on Queen, a personal tribute by the monarch to the late Freddie Mercury.”
Although The Guardian claimed Edward on Edward suffered from a “dearth of revelations and a leaden, cliched script,” it was surprisingly successful. When asked if his family had seen it, Edward said yes, but “I’m not going to tell you what they thought.”
Whatever the royals really thought about Edward’s career, their tacit support sparked resentment in the British entertainment industry. In 1997, Ardent released Windsor Restored, a documentary which chronicled the rebuilding of Windsor Castle after it was devastated by fire in 1992. Not only did Prince Philip, the then Prince Charles, and Prince Andrew sit for interviews, the Royal Collection also gave Ardent license to years of footage of the restoration project free of charge. “Dealing with the Palace is not just frustrating, it’s not like dealing with anyone else: They speak a different language,” a contemporary producer told The Independent. “Ardent, at least, has an interpreter on the team.”
Long before Katy Perry hit the stage for the final show of her Las Vegas residency, the crowd at Resorts World Theatre was going wild. Though the audience was already buzzing in anticipation of the “Roar” singer’s Saturday show, that excitement reached a fever pitch when two big-time guests—Prince Harry and Meghan Markle—were escorted to their seats in the venue’s VIP section, threatening to overshadow Perry’s big night.
Perry’s residency, entitled “Katy Perry: PLAY” kicked off in December 2021, about nine months after Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey that laid bare their estrangement from the rest of the royal family. As a result of that break, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex settled in Montecito, California, just down the street from Perry’s home with her husband, actor Orlando Bloom.
The two famous families bonded over a shared frustration with the paparazzi, Harry told Armchair Expert podcast hosts Dax Shepherd and Monica Padmanin May 2021.
“Just two days ago, Orlando Bloom sent me a message — because he’s just down the road and we sort of keep in contact because of the paparazzi — he sent me a photograph which his security got of this long-haired guy with a beanie on, with his ear pods in, with his massive camera lying in the back of his 4×4 truck,” Harry said at the time. “A woman driving who did the peace sign sitting there as a distraction, and he is laid down in the back of this truck taking photographs of them out with their kid and whoever else is in that area.”
It’s worth noting, however, that Perry hasn’t clearly chosen a side in Harry and Meghan’s boundary-setting with their family. Just last May, Perry performed at King Charles’s coronation concert, an event that Harry skipped. Going further back, to 2018, Perry told an interviewer that Markle’s Givenchy wedding dress needed “one more fitting,” and said that, in some imaginary competition between royal wedding dresses, “Kate won. Kate won. I’m sorry, I’m never not going to tell the truth.”
But that latter slight, which was unearthed a few months ago, appears to be in the past. And on Saturday night, Bloom and the Sussexes’ reviled paparazzi were far less covert than they are in the celebs’ California neighborhood. Slews of social media users, including Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter John Katsilometes,captured Harry and Meghan as they were escorted to their seats in the stadium, accompanied by gasps, screams, and cheers from the crowd.
The group was seated in the VIP section near Celine Dion, but it’s unclear if the celebrities spoke. Also unclear is if Harry had a better time at Perry’s show than he seemed to at a September stop of Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, during which he spent the evening standing stiffly and checking his phone.
In their 2022 Netflix docuseries detailing the course of their relationship and events leading to their dramatic split with the monarchy, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed that Halloween played an important role in the timeline of their personal and public lives.
The couple met while Meghan was spending the summer in Europe in 2016 while on a break from filming her TV show, Suits, and Harry was living at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London while undertaking full-time royal duties.
Harry & Meghan on Netflix revealed never-before-heard details about the couple’s early relationship, later followed by an extended account in Harry’s Spare memoir, including how the prince had first come to know his future wife after asking a friend to connect them after seeing her in a social media post.

In July 2016, the couple began seriously dating. Through the early months of seeing each other, both anticipated the story being picked up by the British press, which maintained an interest in Harry’s dating life.
While the couple got to know each other in relative secrecy they later revealed that things all changed three months in, around the time they attended a Halloween party with Harry’s cousin.
Here, Newsweek looks at everything Harry and Meghan have said about the Halloween party that served as a last hurrah before their relationship was made the subject of international headlines.
‘This Might Be Our Last Shot’

After they started dating in July 2016, Harry and Meghan’s relationship became serious, with the couple quickly embarking on a bonding vacation to Botswana and spending time between their homes in London and Toronto.
While in these early stages the press hadn’t caught on to the identity of the prince’s new girlfriend until the couple received a tip in October 2016 from Harry’s palace communications secretary, Jason Knauf, alerting them that a tabloid planned to break the story the next day.
Recounting their reactions to the tip in their Netflix docuseries, Meghan told viewers: “We said: ‘Well, if its going to come out tomorrow then lets go and have fun tonight.’”
That evening, the couple attended a post-apocalyptic Halloween party held at Soho House in Toronto, accompanied by Prince Andrew‘s daughter, Princess Eugenie, and her future husband, Jack Brooksbank.
“We went to this Halloween party together where we could be completely dressed up and no one would know,” Harry said in the series, with Meghan adding that he had borrowed a “great costume.”
“We were like ‘Well this might be our last shot to just go out and have fun,’” she said.
Meghan then revealed that the party was “so great. So silly. And then…” after which she snapped her fingers and news commentary about their relationship was played closing out the first episode of the 6 part show.

Meghan:“We’d been so petrified about when it [the story] would break and H trying to prepare me for what that might look like, knowing what he had experienced in the past. And then he and his brother’s communications secretary, Jason, called him to let him know that the story was scooped by a tabloid. We said: ‘Well, if its going to come out tomorrow then lets go and have fun tonight.’”
Harry:“We went to this Halloween party together where we could be completely dressed up and no one would know…with a bandana and goggles.”
Meghan:“He borrowed a great costume. And we were like ‘Well this might be our last shot to just go out and have fun…”
Harry:“…and pull the pin on the fun grenade, of which we did.”
Meghan:“His cousin, Eugenie, and her boyfriend at the time, Jack, and my friend Markus were there too. It was so great. It was silly fun. And then… [snap].”
‘Everything Was Changed Forever’
In his memoir, released a month after the Netflix show, Harry gave readers some more insight into the Halloween party and its aftermath, including the detail that his post-apocalyptic costume had been borrowed from Mad Max actor Tom Hardy.
He described the party as “loud, dark, drunk—ideal” and noted that while some attendees recognized Meghan among the crowds, he passed by unnoticed.
While describing the fun time the group had together, he also explained that it marked a moment where “everything was changed forever,” as the couple prepared for the scrutiny that would come with the press and public attention on their relationship.
“We’re going to be hunted” he told Meghan, as he prepared to head back to London after the party while reports began to surface online.
Following the party the rest of Harry and Meghan’s relationship played out in the public eye, with attention reaching it height around the November 2017 announcement of their engagement and May 2018 wedding day at Windsor Castle.

On Wednesday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle posted a statement responding to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas on the website for their foundation, Archewell. Their message came after King Charles IIIspoke out through a representative about the ongoing conflict, and Prince William and Kate Middleton released a statement of their own.
In their statement, the couple condemned violence without naming a specific actor. “At The Archewell Foundation, with Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, we stand against all acts of terrorism and brutality,” the note from a spokesperson read. “We are supporting our partners and organizations on the frontlines in Israel to provide the urgent aid needed, and to help all innocent victims of this unconscionable level of human suffering.”
Meghan and Harry have a history of working with organizations who help refugees in the region. In December 2021, Meghan and Harry supported Humanity Crew, a charity that supports refugee mental health, with a donation that allowed them to open mental health emergency rooms in Palestine, Israel, and Greece. In the 2022 Archewell Foundation impact report, they reported that their funding helped train 150 youth and 100 community members as mental health first responders and provided access to services for 3,000 children.
The statement comes just two days after the couple made a series of appearances in New York City to mark World Mental Health Day. After visiting the Marcy Lab School to meet with students preparing for careers in tech, the pair participated in a panel with Today’s Carson Daly and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. During the event, Meghan discussed the way parenthood has influenced her activism, adding that being a mom is “the most important thing in my entire life.”
On Tuesday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry participated in a candid discussion with a panel of parents to mark World Mental Health Day, highlighting the real-world consequences that online life can have for children.
During the first in-person event for their Archewell Foundation, a summit titled “Mental Wellness in the Digital Age,” the couple took the stage in New York City alongside parents who had experienced tragedy related to their kids’ social media use. The Sussexes had been working with the families for the past year, according to People, and have been meeting with tech companies to discuss how to better protect children on social media.
“There’s a reason why no one else is working in this space, the size and the power of these companies can make you feel scared and helpless… we all understand that,” Harry said of their advocacy in the area.
“The priority here is to again turn pain into purpose and provide as much support as well as a spotlight and a platform for these parents to come together, to heal, to grieve and to also collectively focus on solutions so that no other family anywhere has to go through what they’ve been through,” he continued.
Markle shared that when they initially met the families, “it was impossible not to be in tears hearing their stories because it’s just that devastating.”
Markle and Harry have two children, 4-year-old Archie and 2-year-old Lilibet. Markle discussed the purpose of social media as a community builder, as well as its potential to become dangerous for children.
“There’s no way to hear that and not try to help these families have their stories be heard,” she said.
Markle called being a mom “the most important thing in my entire life.”
“They say being a parent, the days are long but the years are short, so it worries me, but I’m also given a lot of hope and energy by the progress we’ve made in the past year being able to have these incredible parents, these survivors of these experiences, share their stories and the more information gathering we’re able to do, the more we can move the needle a little bit,” she said.
“Everyone is affected by the online world and social media. we all just want to feel safe. I’m confident that with more ears and awareness and visibility of what is really happening, we can make some significant change together.”

Markle and Harry are scheduled to appear in New York City for World Mental Health Day, marking their Archewell Foundation’s first in-person event on Tuesday with a forum titled “The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in a Digital Age.” The event will reportedly focus on building a safer environment for children and teens online, and will feature personal stories from parents who have experienced tragic losses related to their children’s online activity.
This is the first visit the Sussexes are making to New York since May, when they were reportedly involved in a paparazzi car chase that was characterized as “near-catastrophic.” Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, was also in the vehicle at the time.
There are sure to be sightings of the royal couple around New York this week, and Markle, at least, seems to usually be game for a selfie. Her position is unique: She has no official royal duties since she and Prince Harry resigned as working royals. She has no public-facing social media of her own, though rumors (and wishful thinking) that she’ll revive her lifestyle site The Tig are always rampant, and she pops up in others’ posts with some regularity. Just two weeks ago, former Suits co-star Patrick J. Adams apologized for posting throwback pics featuring Markle (the posts violated strike rules). It’s not unusual for her to pop up in a casual group shot on someone else’s Instagram, like a cozy lunch gathering in August. Or, like last week, she may just be out to dinner and willing to entertain a friendly hello from an onlooker.
Though she’s not a working royal, one thing is for sure: Meghan Markle is the queen of the selfie, and there’s no guessing where she’ll be greeting her subjects next.
