  • Tory Lanez Fined $20,000 After Refusing To Answer Deposition Questions In Megan Thee Stallion’s Lawsuit Against Blogger Milagro Gramz

    [ad_1]

It’s been more than a year since Megan Thee Stallion filed a defamation lawsuit against Milagro Gramz (real name Cooper). The case has been inching towards a trial for several months, and this week, it kicked off with jury selection in Miami. Megan has accused the blogger of being part of a “coordinated campaign” to tarnish her reputation — allegedly with the financial backing of Tory Lanez. He has been named in the lawsuit and deposed at least three times. But on the last jailhouse chat, the incarcerated rapper reportedly refused to answer questions. In response, a judge reportedly held him in contempt and fined him a double stack!

What Happened During The Deposition Of Tory Lanez?

According to Rolling Stone, Judge Lisette M. Reid filed her decision on Sunday (November 16) following his third jailhouse deposition. The third questioning took place last Friday. Tory Lanez reportedly began by asking what the consequences would be for declining the questions. Learning of a possible fine and being held in contempt didn’t deter him.

“Whatever the fines are, I’ll pay them,” Tory Lanez reportedly said. “I’m a millionaire. I don’t care.”

Judge Reid wrote in her filing about Tory’s alleged behavior. She said Tory “stormed out of the room” at one point, and directed comments like “liar” and “calm down” at Megan’s lawyer. Additionally, he refused to answer questions about how he met or learned about Milagro Gramz. He also declined to say whether he was involved in any contact with the blogger via text or Instagram. The judge said Megan’s legal asked the questions “properly” but Lanez still “refused to answer and ultimately terminated the deposition without answering any questions.”

Daystar Peterson (the rapper’s legal name) now owes Megan Thee Stallion’s lawyers $20,000. The fine is for “his obstruction of Plaintiff’s multiple attempts to depose him,” the judge said in her filing. Tory Lanez’s lawyer, Crystal Morgan, also took an L. Rolling Stone reports that the judge also fined her. He has not publicly commented on the ruling.

Judge Recently Ruled Against Overturning Tory’s Conviction

This is week two of Tory Lanez’s facing legal setbacks involving Megan Thee Stallion. A California court last Wednesday denied the rapper’s appeal of his guilty verdict from the 2020 shooting of Meg.  A three-judge panel from the California 2nd District Court of Appeal issued a ruling saying they affirm the triple-charge conviction. Lanez was convicted of three felonies in December of 2022: assault with a semiautomatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

A Los Angeles jury on Friday found rapper Tory Lanez guilty of three felonies in the 2020 shooting of hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion that left her wounded with bullet fragments in her feet.

The jury of seven women and five men deliberated for one day before convicting the 30-year-old Canadian rapper, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. The counts could lead to up to 22 years in prison.

Lanez, who was wearing a powder pink winter coat with matching pants, showed no visible reaction as the verdict was read. He was handcuffed while in the courtroom.

After the jury left the courtroom, Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, leapt up and began shouting. “This wicked system stands judged before God almighty!” He shouted, as deputies closed in on him. He then pointed to the two prosecutors in the case and yelled “You two are evil, wicked people. You know exactly what you did.”

Deputies removed him from the courtroom, where he continued to shout in the hallway.

Members of the media and public were forced to remain in the courtroom for a few minutes after the hearing while the hallway was cleared.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, testified during the trial that Lanez fired a handgun at the back of her feet and shouted for her to dance as she walked away from an SUV in which they had been riding in the Hollywood Hills in the summer of 2020. She said the two had gotten into a dispute that got especially heated when she began insulting his music.

She needed surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet.

There was no immediate comment from her representatives about the verdict. She was not in court Friday.

The shooting set off a storm of cultural issues and arguments that peaked during the trial, including the reluctance of Black victims to speak to police, the protection of Black women, gender politics in hip-hop, and online toxicity.

In closing arguments, prosecutors emphasized the courage it took for Megan come forward and the vitriol the 27-year-old has faced for it. They said she had no incentive to tell anything but the truth.

“Why would she lie?” Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott said. “She’s been subjected to a stream of hate. For what? For coming forward as a victim of domestic violence?”

Lanez’s lawyer alleged in his closing argument that the shots were actually fired by Megan’s then-best friend Kelsey Harris in a jealous fight over Lanez, who tried to stop the shooting. The attorney, George Mgdesyan, argued Megan created a more sympathetic narrative by pinning the shooting on Lanez.

“Megan Pete is a liar. She lied about everything in this case from the beginning,” Mgdesyan said. “She lied under oath here.”

Harris denied being the shooter and previously identified Lanez as the one holding the gun. Her attorney, in an email, declined to comment on her involvement.

Lanez began releasing mixtapes in 2009 and saw a steady rise in popularity, moving on to major-label albums. His last two reached the top 10 on Billboard’s charts.

Megan Thee Stallion was already a major rising star at the time of the shooting, and her prominence has surged since. She won a Grammy for best new artist in 2021, and had No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 with her own song “Savage,” featuring Beyonce, and as a guest on Cardi B’s “WAP.”

Sean Kelly was called by the defense, but both sides argued his account favored them. He said he saw muzzle flashes that appeared to come from a woman, but also said he saw a small man “firing everywhere.”

The Megan Thee Stallion – Tory Lanez Trial Explained

    [ad_1]

Even if you haven’t been paying attention over the past few years to the Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez beef, you’ve undoubtedly heard about this underlying national drama that’s slowly coming to a boil. On July 12, 2020, Los Angeles police reported a woman suffering from a foot injury and a man being arrested on a weapons allegation after the cops had responded to a call about shots being fired in the area.

Prosecutors claim that Megan Pete – AKA Megan Thee Stallion – was shot by Daystar Peterson, known as Tory Lanez. Two long years and a glut of diss-tracks later, Megan is suing Tory for “great bodily injury” after shooting her in the foot. Lanez pleaded “not guilty” in November 2020…but oh boy does it only get messier from here.

So. The trial began this week and a battle of he-said-she-said has commenced. If you’ve missed the past few days of drama and conflicting statements…don’t you worry.

Here’s everything you need to know:

    • The defense, led by George Mgdesyan, is arguing that the altercation was caused by Megan’s jealousy of longtime former friend, Kelsey Harris.
      • Both Megan and Harris have had relationships with Tory Lanez
      • Lanez claims the women have always had jealousy issues…citing Megan sleeping with Harris’ exes Ben Simmons and DaBaby
    • Kelsey Harris and Tory Lanez both tested positive for gun residue
      • Harris is set to testify in support of Megan (at some point)
      • Defense seems to imply that Harris was the shooter
    • Prosecution, led by Alexander Bott, argues that Lanez shot Megan because she insulted his music abilities

There have been many accusations from Lanez that Megan Thee Stallion is lying about being shot…despite X-Rays showing bullet fragments in her foot. Kelsey Harris also texted Megan’s bodyguard that morning “Help. Tory shot Meg.” So there’s that.

Only time will tell what the verdict is…but we’re hoping this brings some closure for Megan Thee Stallion, who has been open about her mental health struggles amongst this chaos.
