  • Dave Mustaine Says He Wants a Metallica and Megadeth Tour

    One of the most talked-about aspects of the new Megadeth album, an album that the band says is their last, is that the album features the band’s own version of the Metallica song “Ride the Lightning.” The original version of the song features co-writing credits from Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine.

    “Ride the Lighting” was the title track off Metallica’s 1984 album by the same name, and now, Mustaine has recorded his own version of it. But, it’s all in love. While Mustaine has a history of being at odds with Metallica, since he was replaced in the band by Kirk Hammett years ago, he insists that it would just take one thing to make it right. Mustaine says that if the two share the road together, that’s all they would need to reconcile.

    “I think what needs to happen is there needs to be a Megadeth/Me­tallica tour,” Mustaine tells Revolver magazine. “Period. That would, I’m sure, make everything right. We could hang out. Spend time together.”

    He was let go from Metallica in 1983. Mustaine sooner formed Megadeth and had success with the thrash metal titans, there’s no denying that the two camps have been at odds. With that in mind, Mustaine says he’d be happy to have a reconciliation.

    “I liked them,” he tells the magazine. “If the friendship was restarted, it wouldn’t bother me. I would accept, and I think it would be nice to revisit some of those times. But I just think because there was a lot of hurt and misunderstanding around our time together that it would be difficult not to keep bringing up the past.”

    Megadeth released their final album on Friday, Jan. 23, to rave music reviews, and Megadeth’s version of “Ride the Lightning” is on there. Mustaine came up with a riff in the song which is why he has co-writing credits on the original.

    So, has he heard from Metallica about the cover? He says no. “I don’t expect to,” Mustaine explains. “But I’m sure at some point we’ll hear what they think.”

  • DAVE MUSTAINE On Auditioning For METALLICA: “I Got The Gig Just By Warming Up” – Metal Injection

    Dave Mustaine has reflected on his early days with Metallica, revealing how his distinctive riffing style landed him the gig — and why he bristles at being labeled simply a “rhythm guitar player.”

    In a January 5 interview with Premier Guitar, the Megadeth mastermind revisited his short but hugely influential tenure in Metallica between 1981 and 1983, a period that helped define the foundations of thrash metal. Though his time in the band was brief, Mustaine’s songwriting and aggressive guitar style left a lasting imprint, with material he helped write appearing on Kill ‘Em All and Ride the Lightning — including early versions of songs that would later evolve into Megadeth classics.

    Despite being widely regarded as one of metal’s greatest rhythm guitarists, Mustaine said the label doesn’t quite sit right with him. “The term ‘rhythm guitar player’ seems a little diminishing for me,” he explained. “I love the riff.”

    Instead, Mustaine prefers to be known as “a guitarist that sings,” emphasizing that riffcraft — not lead guitar flashiness alone — has always been at the core of his musical identity.

    Mustaine also shared a now-legendary story about how he joined Metallica after meeting James Hetfield and original bassist Ron McGovney in Norwalk, California. “When I went to Norwalk the day that I met James Hetfield and Ron McGovney, I didn’t know what was gonna happen,” Mustaine recalled. “But I had my style, and it was based around the riff.”

    At the time, Mustaine didn’t even own the standard gear associated with aspiring metal guitar heroes. “I didn’t have any Marshalls yet because I was just starting to get serious,” he said. “I had these Risson amps—they were tan—so from the moment I set up my stack, I was different.”

    As he plugged in and began warming up, Mustaine grew confused when no one else showed up to play. “I plugged in my guitar and I started warming up, and I kept warming up and warming up,” he said. “And I finally said, ‘Where the fuck are these guys?’”

    After setting his guitar down and switching his amp to standby, Mustaine went to look for them — only to receive unexpected news. “They said, ‘You got the gig,’” he recalled. “So I got my job just by warming up.”

  • Ex-Megadeth Bassist David Ellefson Wants to Join Final Tour After 4-Year Split

    David Ellefson, who played bass for Megadeth, wants to mend fences with Dave Mustaine before the band’s last tour. After four years apart, he’s ready to talk. “Look, I would take his call. For sure, it would be nice if things between me and Dave and me and Megadeth, as just an entity, didn’t end on a sour note. I think that’s what [Megadeth’s] farewell statement has [done], sort of raised all those questions,” Ellefson said, according to Guitar.com.

    Ellefson added that his ties to Dave and the band shouldn’t end in a bad way. He said that he would play with the group again if asked. His words hint at hope for peace between old friends. Recent deaths in rock music made him think hard. Ozzy Osbourne and Ace Frehley passed away recently. 

    Ellefson has left Megadeth twice. His first run lasted from 1983 to 2002. He came back in 2010, but bad press forced him out in 2021. He thinks that the split wasn’t their fault, and things from outside made them grow apart. His words show that his bond with Megadeth still matters.

    Mustaine kept things light when he spoke of the end, saying that people should be happy and celebrate with him. The band will release a self-titled album on January 23. After 43 years of metal, they’ll hit the road one final time. They’ll tell fans where they can catch their final shows soon.

  • Megadeth Plays First Live Performance of New Single ‘Tipping Point’ in Amsterdam

    Megadeth unveiled their new single “Tipping Point” at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome on Oct. 14. The performance marked the start of the band’s final tour before retirement.

    “So, we have a new record coming out. And we have a new single that’s out right now. And we’re gonna play that song the first time ever right now,” Dave Mustaine told the crowd.

    The Amsterdam show, part of their European tour with Disturbed, also included the band’s classics. Fans went wild for hits like “Hangar 18,” while the new song sparked fresh energy in the packed venue.

    Set for release on Jan. 23, 2026, through BLKIIBLK, their final album will include “Tipping Point.” The track includes guitar work from Mustaine and new axeman Teemu Mäntysaari.

    The band surprised fans last August with news of their retirement plans. “I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans, and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them,” Mustaine confided in a statement on the band’s website.

    Collectors can get the album in two rare vinyl pressings: Red Orange Ghostly or Green Black Kiwi Splatter. Each version will be limited to 300 copies worldwide.

    The band is playing in Europe until Oct. 28. Next up is Munich’s Olympiahalle on Oct.17. A massive farewell tour spanning 2026 will soon be announced, giving fans one last chance to catch the metal masters in action. Fans can get info and tickets from the band’s official website.
