  • McDonald’s is bringing back its Monopoly Game after nearly 10 years. See what you can win.

After nearly 10 years, McDonald’s is bringing back its Monopoly Game, a sweepstakes inspired by the iconic board game. The promotion, which now includes a digital component, gives customers a chance to win free food and prizes from their purchases.

The Monopoly Game, which runs Oct. 6 – Nov. 2, involves game pieces, which consumers gather either by peeling back stickers on in-store items, or through purchases made in the McDonald’s app. The game pieces will hew closely to names found on the classic board game — think Park Place, Boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue.

Participating customers can win everything from instant prizes, such as a free Quarter Pounder with cheese, to a $1,000,000 cash prize to a 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The odds of winning an instant prize — which consists mostly of eligible food items from the McDonald’s menu — is one in five, according to a FAQ page on the McDonald’s website.

“Our fans have been clamoring for the return of MONOPOLY at McDonald’s, and we’re thrilled to bring it back with a modern, digital spin,” Alyssa Buetikofer, SVP, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s, said in statement. “This game is a core memory for so many customers, and we’re excited that those memories can now be shared across generations.”

Here’s what to know before the game kicks off next week.

    How do I play?

For the 2025 version of McDonald’s Monopoly Game, customers must download the McDonald’s app to opt into the company’s reward’s program and then register for the game. Those who pre-register on the app between Sept. 29 and Oct. 5, will get 500 bonus MyMcDonald’s Rewards points, according to game rules on McDonald’s website. Beginning Oct. 6 and through Nov. 2, registered players can order select menu items to receive game pieces.

Physical game pieces can be obtained by visiting a participating McDonald’s restaurant in the U.S. or ordering McDonald’s delivery. The pieces — which will have to be scanned and redeemed on the McDonald’s app in order to reveal the prize or save to combine with other pieces — will be affixed to the following menu items:

    • Big Mac
    • 10- and 20-piece Chicken McNuggets
    • Filet-O-Fish sandwich
    • Hash browns
    • McMuffin sandwiches
    • Large Soft Drink; Iced Tea; or Lemonade (but excluding CosMc’s beverages);
    • Large iced coffee

Digital game pieces can be obtained by ordering through the app or use their McDonald’s reward code to make a purchase. Eligible menu items include:

    • Biscuit Sandwich (excluding sausage biscuit sandwich)
    • 4-piece McCrispy strips;
    • McCrispy sandwich
    • McGriddles sandwiches (excluding sausage McGriddles)
    • Medium fries
    • Large McCafé beverages
    • Quarter Pounder with cheese

Customers, in some cases, will be an “instant winner” and see a prize revealed immediately. Customers can also collect and combine digital and physical game pieces to create a winning combination.

What sort of prizes can I win?

In addition to eligible food items, McDonald’s prize list includes everything from gift cards to trips. Below is a list of some of the items included. The full prize list can be found at playatmcd.com .

    • Cash prizes ranging from $50 to $1,000,000
    • Trip for four to Universal Orlando Resort
    • Trip to Curaçao
    • Tour for four of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida
    • $10,000 Lowe’s shopping spree
    • A 2026 WinnebagoView motorhome
    • 77-inch Samsung TV from Best Buy
    • $25 and $50 gift cards to Best Buy
    • One-year DoorDash subscription
    • Trip to the 2026 FIFA World Cup
    • One million Wyndham Rewards points
    • One million American Airlines AAdvantage miles

McDonald’s first launched its Monopoly Game promotional sweepstakes in 1987, and continued to offer it on and off until 2016.

Renewed attention was brought to the game in a 2020 HBO docu-series “McMillion$” about con artist Jerome P. Jacobson, who masterminded an elaborate scheme in which he made millions off of stealing and selling McDonald’s Monopoly game pieces.

  • McDonald’s revives Extra Value Meals as it tries to woo budget-conscious diners

McDonald’s is moving to make its cheap eats even cheaper as the world’s largest fast-food chain tries lure back budget-conscious customers.

The company announced on Tuesday that it is bringing back “Extra Value Meals” starting Sept. 8, including a limited $5 sausage and egg McMuffin meal and an $8 Big Mac meal.

Other items on the Extra Value Menu include:

    • Sausage Egg and Cheese McGriddles
    • Egg McMuffin
    • Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit
    • 10-piece Chicken McNuggets
    • Any variety Quarter Pounder burger
    • Any variety McCrispy Sandwich

McDonald’s focus on value comes as some customers, worn down by years of elevated inflation, have pulled back on their spending for food outside the home and amid heightened economic uncertainty.

On a company earnings call in May, CEO Chris Kempczinski said traffic among low-income customers was down “nearly double digits.” McDonald’s has also seen sluggish breakfast sales, which Kempczinski has attributed to the financial pressures facing low-income consumers.

In January, McDonald’s introduced the McValue menu, which includes the $5 meal deal, along with a “buy one, add one for $1” deal. Earlier this summer, the company also said it would bring back the Snack Wrap, a white-flour tortilla filled with chicken, shredded lettuce and cheese. The item, now available for $2.99, returned to the McDonald’s menu in July after a nine-year hiatus.

Other companies are also feeling the sting of reduced consumer spending. Constellation Brands, which markets beer brands Corona and Modelo in the U.S., on Tuesday cited falling demand in trimming its profit outlook for the year.

Constellation said in April that Hispanic customers in particular were reducing their beer consumption because of concerns about higher food costs, immigration and the job market.

“That has tended to mean that the consumer has pulled back on spending on a number of categories,” CEO Bill Newlands said during a conference call with investors on Tuesday. “Beer is quite a ways down the list, but it’s certainly on the list because things like social gatherings, an area where the Hispanic consumer often consumes beer, are declining today as part of these overarching concerns that they have.”

  • McDonald’s E. coli outbreak has sickened at least 75 people in 13 states, CDC says

McDonald’s E. coli outbreak has sickened at least 75 people in 13 states, CDC says

Federal Health officials on Friday said at least 75 people across 13 states have been sickened by the recent and deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed one fatality linked to the outbreak, as had been previously reported. At least 22 people have been hospitalized, and two people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious health issue that can cause kidney failure. The person who died, an older person from Colorado, isn’t one of the people who developed HUS, the health agency said.

Federal health officials alerted the public to the outbreak on Tuesday, and McDonald’s removed the product from about a fifth of its 13,000 U.S. locations, including its restaurants in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming and parts of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

Illnesses started on September 27, with the last reported case on October 10, according to health officials. States with cases include:

    • Colorado
    • Iowa
    • Kansas
    • Michigan
    • Missouri
    • Montana
    • Nebraska
    • New Mexico
    • Oregon
    • Utah
    • Washington
    • Wisconsin
    • Wyoming

McDonald’s sold about 1 million Quarter Pounders in the timeframe that the illnesses occurred, a spokesperson for the restaurant said, adding that the fast-food chain believes more people would have been sickened if the contamination stemmed from the patties themselves, adding that onions used on the burgers may be the culprit.

McDonald’s burgers are cooked at 175 degrees, above the 160 degree level needed to kill the E. coli bacteria, while the sliced onions are raw, the spokesperson explained.

“If that is the source, it will be the first time onions have been a carrier for this strain of E. coli,” the spokesperson said.

The supplier of the onions for the affected McDonald’s locations is California-based produce giant Taylor Farms, which initiated a recall of yellow onions produced at its Colorado facility.

In a statement Friday, McDonald’s reiterated that it “removed all slivered onions produced from this facility,” adding that it will no longer source onions from the facility.

“Due to broad concern and our unwavering commitment to food safety we have made the decision to stop sourcing onions from Taylor Farms’ Colorado Springs facility indefinitely,” McDonald’s said. “As a reminder, all other menu items, including other beef products (including the Cheeseburger, Hamburger, Big Mac, McDouble, and the Double Cheeseburger) are unaffected and available,” it added.

Of the people the who told the CDC they got sick after eating at McDonald’s, nearly all said they had eaten a beef hamburger, with most specifying it had been a Quarter Pounder. Some of those who were stricken reported traveling to other states before they became ill, with at least three eating at McDonald’s during their travel, the federal agency noted.

Investigators continue to work to confirm if slivered onions or beef patties in the burgers are the source of the E. coli outbreak. Preliminary findings reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration Administration show that slivered onions are a likely source. The FDA is also working to determine if the onions were served or sold at other businesses.

“As a family-owned business we take pride in providing safe, healthy fresh foods to people every day. It saddens us to see the illnesses and affected individuals and families from the current E. coli O157:H7 outbreak,” a Taylor Farms spokeswoman told CBS News in an email, referring to the particular strain behind the current spate of illnesses.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individuals and their families impacted. Our priority remains the health and safety of our consumers. We have preemptively recalled yellow onions from our Taylor Farms Colorado facility that were sent to select foodservice customers,” she added.

The company is working with CDC and FDA to determine the course of the E. coli outbreak, the spokesperson said.

The potential for contamination prompted Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell and other major fast-food chains to pull fresh onions from some of their own locations, although the restaurants stressed they had no indications of illness.

    E. coli symptoms

It typically takes three to four weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak. Those infected with the toxin-producing E. coli experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, and most recover without treatment after five to seven days.

People are advised to call their health care provider if they ate a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder and have severe E. coli symptoms, as follows:

    • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
      • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
      • Bloody diarrhea
    • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
    • Signs of dehydration, such as:
      • Reduced urination
      • Dry mouth and throat
      • Feeling dizzy when standing up

The health worries about one of McDonald’s most popular menu items comes as fast-food chains try to attract consumers still smarting from high food prices. The company this summer launched a $5 value meal in a bid to draw lower-income customers.

The outbreak is not the first to be linked to the Golden Arches. In 2018, an outbreak of intestinal illness linked to salads from McDonald’s sickened more than 500 people in more than a dozen states.

McDonald’s shares were down 2.5% on Friday, or down 1% for the year.

  • McDonald’s takes Quarter Pounder off the menu at 1 in 5 restaurants due to E. coli outbreak

McDonald’s takes Quarter Pounder off the menu at 1 in 5 restaurants due to E. coli outbreak

McDonald’s has stopped selling Quarter Pounder hamburgers at about one-fifth of its U.S. restaurants as federal health officials investigate an outbreak of E. coli that has sickened nearly 50 people in 10 states, killing one.

The fast-food chain sold about 1 million Quarter Pounders in the timeframe that the illnesses occurred, a McDonald’s spokesperson said Wednesday. The company said it believes more people would have been sickened if the contamination stemmed from the patties themselves, adding that onions used on the burgers may be the culprit.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday linked McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers to the outbreak, which sickened people in Colorado, Nebraska, and other Mountain and Western states. Most of those who fell ill reported eating Quarter Pounders from McDonald’s, and investigators are working to confirm which food ingredient is contaminated, according to the CDC.

What may have caused the E. coli outbreak?

Cesar Piña, the company’s North America chief supply chain officer, said in a statement on Tuesday that the company’s initial investigation suggests that some of the E. coli illnesses might be linked to slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounder.

McDonald’s burgers are cooked at 175 degrees, above the 160 degree level needed to kill the E. coli bacteria, according to a company spokesperson.

However, slivered onions used as a topping on Quarter Pounder burgers sold in the impacted region were not cooked and came from a single supplier.

“If that is the source, it will be the first time onions have been a carrier for this strain of E. coli,” the spokesperson said.

McDonald’s has removed slivered onions and quarter pound beef patties from its locations in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming and portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

A total of 49 E. coil cases linked to Quarter Pounders have been reported so far. Most of the illnesses occurred in Colorado and Nebraska, with 26 sickened in the former and nine stricken in the latter, the CDC stated. Of the 26 who became ill in Colorado, one older adult died, the CDC said. Health officials in Utah and Wyoming each reported four illnesses. Other states reporting illnesses include Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon and Wisconsin.

At least 10 people have been hospitalized. The illnesses began at the end of September, and the most recent incident occurred as of Oct. 11.

One child is hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can cause kidney failure, according to the CDC.

McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers are being linked to an outbreak of E. coli that has sickened nearly 50 people in 10 states, killing one person, federal health officials said Tuesday.

Most sick people reported eating Quarter Pounders from McDonald’s, and investigators are working to confirm which food ingredient is contaminated, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Another person developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney failure. The person who died is not the same same person with HUS.

At least 10 people have been hospitalized.

Nine people were reported ill in the outbreak in Nebraska, while Utah and Wyoming reported four illnesses a piece. Other states reporting illnesses include Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon and Wisconsin.

In a statement McDonald’s posted to its website, Cesar Piña, the company’s North America chief supply chain officer, said that “initial findings from the investigation indicate that a subset of illnesses may be linked to slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounder and sourced by a single supplier that serves three distribution centers.”

McDonald’s is cooperating with federal and state public health officials and has stopped using fresh slivered onions and quarter pound beef patties in several states, where the product will temporarily be unavailable, the CDC stated.

Quarter pound beef patties are only used on Quarter Pounders and fresh slivered onions are primarily used on Quarter Pounder hamburgers and not other menu items, the CDC said.

What’s open and closed on Labor Day 2024? See hours for major stores, pharmacies and more.

Labor Day may be a national holiday, but it’s also a big day for family get-togethers and backyard grilling with friends, often requiring a quick dash to pick up extra hamburger buns or drinks.

The good news is that plenty of retailers will be keeping their doors open on September 2. Others will remain closed on Labor Day — a national holiday in the U.S. since 1894 — while some stores might have shorter hours. Here’s what to know about what’s open and closed on Labor Day 2024.

Is Costco open on Labor Day?

Costco closes its doors for seven U.S. holidays each year, and Labor Day is among them. That means that you’re out of luck Monday if you hope to make a quick run to the discount chain.

Is Walmart open on Labor Day?

Walmart told CBS MoneyWatch that its locations will be open during their regular hours on Labor Day. Walmart locations are typically open from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Which grocery stores are open on Labor Day?

Many grocery stores will be open on Labor Day, although some ask that customers check with their local stores to make sure they will be operating with normal hours. Here are some grocery chains that will be operating on September 2:

    • Albertsons: Albertsons Companies stores will be open on Labor Day, including Safeway, Albertsons, ACME, Shaw’s, Vons and Tom Thumb. However, the company’s pharmacies may be closed or have adjusted hours.
    • Food Lion: The chain’s 1,100 locations will be operating during their normal hours, although these vary by location. Most Food Lion locations are open from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.
    • Publix: Its more than 1,400 locations will be open during their regular hours, but its pharmacies will be closed. Most Publix stores are open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Which pharmacies are open on Labor Day?

Some pharmacies will be closed on Labor Day, so it’s best to check ahead for exact hours and operations.

    • CVS Pharmacy locations will be open on Labor Day, although some stores may have reduced hours. The company recommends that customers call their local store before visiting or check hours at CVS.com.

McDonald’s ends AI drive-thru orders — for now

McDonald’s is pulling the plug on a test that deployed artificial intelligence to take drive-thru customer orders, with the technology showing mixed results.

McDonald’s told CBS MoneyWatch that it is ending its Automated Order Taker pilot, which used AI in drive-thrus to expedite orders. The fast-food giant, which launched the tech through a partnership with IBM in 2021, isn’t ready for now to deploy voice ordering across its restaurants. Some customers reported that McDonald’s chatbot sometimes got even simple orders wrong.

“The goal of the test was to determine if an automated voice ordering solution could simplify operations for crew and create a faster, improved experience for our fans,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, while adding it still sees “an opportunity to explore voice ordering solutions more broadly.”

McDonald’s will continue to partner with IBM in other areas.

“As we move forward, our work with IBM has given us the confidence that a voice ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of our restaurants’ future. We see tremendous opportunity in advancing our restaurant technology and will continue to evaluate long-term, scalable solutions that will help us make an informed decision on a future voice ordering solution by the end of the year,” McDonald’s said.

    Early stumbles

As of December, McDonald’s had 27,000 drive-thru locations across the world. It deployed the AI tech at 100 U.S. locations. And as with any new technology, there were mishaps that amused, and sometimes frustrated, customers.

For example, in early 2023 TikTok user Ren Adams shared a video documenting her experience using McDonald’s AI ordering system.

“This morning I tried to go to McDonald’s and get my daily dose of caffeine, and some breakfast. I was going to get a hash brown, a sweet tea and a coke,” she said. “At this McDonald’s, it’s all robot. We’re talking to a robot, there’s no person on the speaker.”

The AI cashier mistakenly added nine sweet teas to Adams’ order, she said in her TikTok video, noting that she then abandoned the order.

In another video, TikTok user Madilynn Cameron filmed herself at a McDonald’s drive-thru ordering water and vanilla ice cream. The AI bot who took her order inexplicably added two sides of butter and four ketchup packets to the order, an image of Cameron’s checkout screen shows.

“McDonald’s, I’m done,” Cameron said in the video.

McDonald’s did not comment on these or any other incidents in which customers reported problems using its AI bot.

    Other chains embracing AI

Other fast-food chains, including Chipotle, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, are testing bots in their kitchens and at cash registers to save on labor costs. Chipotle has opened at least 500 digital drive-thru “Chipotlane” restaurants since 2018. It has also tested AI in kitchens with “Chippy,” a robotic kitchen assistant that can make tortilla chips

Yum Brands’-owned Taco Bell and Pizza Hut restaurants are also placing big bets on AI, its tech chief Joe Park told the Wall Street Journal in April. “A lot of that gets automated in the future, where you don’t have to interface directly with the technology,” he told the WSJ. “You can do it through generative AI.”

  • California set to hike wages for fast-food workers to industry-leading $20 per hour

California set to hike wages for fast-food workers to industry-leading $20 per hour

Fast food wage increase goes into effect next week

Fast food wage increase goes into effect next week

    02:30

Starting Monday, most California fast-food workers will earn at least $20 an hour — the highest minimum wage across the U.S. restaurant industry. Yet the pay hike is sparking furious debate, with some restaurant owners warning of job losses and higher prices for customers, while labor advocates tout the benefits of higher wages.

The new law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom last fall, takes effect on April 1, requiring that fast-food chains with at least 60 locations nationwide pay workers at least $20 an hour. The means the state’s 553,000 fast-food workers will earn more than the state’s $16 minimum wage for all other industries.

The new baseline wage comes as the fast-food industry is seeing booming earnings, with big chains like McDonald’s enjoying strong revenue growth and wider profit margins in recent years. That’s partly due to menu prices that have far outpaced inflation, with fast-food costs surging 47% over the past decade, compared with an average of 29% for all other prices, according to a new analysis from the Roosevelt Institute, a nonpartisan think tank.

“Prices have been so much higher than operating costs over the last decade that these companies could just absorb higher operating costs,” Roosevelt Institute labor expert Alí Bustamante, a co-author of the analysis, told CBS MoneyWatch. “This is about raising the floor and making sure that $20 being the new minimum wage puts workers on a better economic footing to cover their household needs.”

Prior to the April 1 pay hike, the highest paid fast-food workers in the U.S. were in Washington State, which has a minimum wage of $16.28 per hour.

What’s on the menu — price hikes

Some California restaurant owners say that higher labor costs will lead to higher prices for customers, and even curb hiring. One California franchisee told CBS MoneyWatch that while major fast-food chains might be able to absorb such costs, smaller operators will struggle.

“We aren’t these big corporations with deep pockets — we’re not Wall Street, we are Main Street,” said Alex Johnson, who owns 10 franchised restaurants in the San Francisco area, including Auntie Anne’s and Cinnabons locations.

Johnson’s company is subject to the new wage law because the parent franchisors operate more than 60 restaurants across the U.S.

    alexjohnson-6a.jpg
Alex Johnson, who owns 10 chain locations in the San Francisco area, said he may need to raise prices this year to offset the new $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers.

    Alex Johnson

Johnson said the wage hike comes at a time when his restaurants are already coping with softer sales, which he attributes to consumers sapped by two years of elevated inflation and the high cost of living in California. To offset the new $20 minimum wage, Johnson expects to increase prices about 10% this year, which he plans to do in two smaller increments.

“You couldn’t think of a worse time to raise prices,” he said.

The typical California restaurant is facing an additional expense of $250,000 annually to cover the April 1 wage hike, according to the Save Local Restaurants coalition, citing data from a McDonald’s owner association. The group represents restaurant owners.

“We know we have to take something at a significant increase when you talk about a 20%-ish increase in wages,” Chipotle Chief Financial Officer Jack Hartung said on an earnings call last month about the California law.

Chipotle’s 3,400 locations across the U.S. could see a 1% increase in prices to compensate, he added.

Starbucks told the Los Angeles Times it plans to offset the higher wages by boosting prices, among other measures.

“There isn’t a quick-service restaurant owner in California who can easily shoulder an immediate 25% wage increase for all their employees,” Mike Whatley, vice president of state affairs and grassroots advocacy for the National Restaurant Association, a trade organization for the industry, told CBS MoneyWatch.

He added, “Consumers are starting to see this in menu prices, and employees across the state are starting to feel it, too.”

Some critics of the wage law said the higher costs will lead to layoffs and curb hiring. Already, some Pizza Hut locations in California are planning to cut jobs, according to state labor filings. Pizza Hut didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Johnson noted that he’s not hiring at the moment and plans to introduce more automation, such as ordering kiosks, to reduce his need for human labor. He’s also thinking about selling his franchise locations in California to focus on restaurants in Nevada, where costs are lower.

“I work really hard to treat employees fairly, but there are consequences to these actions that increase costs — we’re not hiring anymore, and I’m contemplating closing or selling my restaurants,” Johnson added. “It’s a sad time.”

“An economy that works for all”

Labor advocates argue the new law will help fast-food workers, who earn an average of $16.60 an hour, or just over $34,000 per year, according to government data. That’s below the poverty line for a family of four in California.

The higher pay is “a transformational step toward an economy that works for all, not just billionaires,” Tia Orr, executive director of the Service Employees International Union California, a labor group that pushed for the law, told the Associated Press.

When Newsom signed the law last year, he dismissed the notion that fast-food jobs are primarily held by teenagers, underscoring that many households depend on the jobs for income. The average age of fast-food workers is about 26, according to Business Insider.

Meanwhile, dozens of states and localities have hiked their minimum wages during the past several years, even as the federal baseline remains at $7.25 an hour — a rate that has remained frozen since 2009. Some economic research has found that higher wages don’t lead to job losses, while having the upside of providing financial security to workers and boosting consumer spending, which stimulates broader economic growth.

California businesses have had to digest multiple wage hikes during the past several years, yet continued to operate, experts point out.

“You’ve experienced minimum wage hikes in California for over 10 years now,” Bustamante said. “You don’t open up a business in California without expecting minimum wage increases.”

McDonald’s CEO says Israel-Hamas war is having a “meaningful” impact on its business

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said the restaurant chain is seeing a “meaningful business impact” in the Middle East and elsewhere related to the Israel-Hamas war.

In a letter posted to LinkedIn, the executive said Thursday that “misinformation” related to the conflict has affected several of McDonald’s markets across the world. Companies including McDonald’s and Starbucks have faced boycott campaigns from both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel groups over their perceived support for one side or the other following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

“This is disheartening and ill-founded,” Kempczinski said in the letter.

Kempczinski didn’t disclose how much the conflict has hurt sales. McDonald’s is expected to report its earnings later this month, which could reveal more about the effect of the conflict on its operations.

McDonald’s did not immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

McDonald’s came under fire this fall after one of its Israel-based restaurants offered discounts to Israeli military personnel, prompting some customers to boycott the burger joint. Some of the company’s franchises in Pakistan and Indonesia have made donations to aid organizations in Gaza, Al Jazeera reported

More than half of McDonald’s restaurants are located outside the U,S., with many of those restaurants locally operated franchises, according to the company’s data

Last fall, supporters of Palestine boycotted and vandalized several Starbucks stores, decrying what they characterized as the company’s support for Israel. Around the same time, the coffee chain also drew criticism from pro-Israel groups in the U.S., with the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce calling for a boycott after the Starbucks Workers United expressed support for Hamas’ cause.

In a letter to employees last month, Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan expressed concern about the impact of rising tensions over the conflict.

“While I am grateful for so much, I am concerned about the state of the world we live in, ” Narasimhan said. “There are conflicts in many parts. It has unleashed violence against the innocent, hate and weaponized speech and lies — all of which we condemn.”

What do the most-Googled searches of 2023 tell us about the year? Here’s what Americans wanted to know, and what we found out.

The news we followed, the people who fascinated us, the culture and trends that grabbed our attention — Google’s “Year in Search” data for 2023 sheds light on the top trending topics Americans wanted to know about this year.

From celebrities and athletes to TV shows and box-office hits, people across the country turned to the search engine for answers to pressing questions like “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?” and recipes for McDonald’s hit beverage of the year, the Grimace Shake.

While we may not have gotten all the answers, here’s what some of the top searches in the U.S. have to tell us about the past year:

    The stories we followed

This year, the world was shocked by the war in Israel and Gaza, which was Google’s most-searched news story of the year. Following the deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel by the militant group Hamas, Israel vowed to destroy the group and launched airstrikes and a ground operation into the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas.

The second most searched story of the year, according to Google, was the frantic search in June for the OceanGate Titan submersible, which vanished on a dive to the Titanic shipwreck site with five people aboard. Tragically, everyone on the tourist vessel was killed when it imploded under the pressures of the deep sea.

Americans also did a lot of searching for updates on hurricanes, with Hurricane Hilary, Hurricane Idalia, and Hurricane Lee rounding out the list of top 5 most-searched news stories.

The people we were curious about

NFL player Damar Hamlin became the No. 1 most-Googled person on the list after the Buffalo Bills defensive back collapsed on the field in cardiac arrest during a Jan. 3 game. Hamlin has since made a full recovery and returned to play this season. Hamlin was also Google’s most-searched athlete of 2023.

Actor Jeremy Renner was the No. 2 most-Googled person in the U.S. in 2023 following a New Year’s Day snowplow accident that left him hospitalized with over 30 broken bones. Renner was run over by the vehicle while trying to protect his nephew. He has since made a remarkable recovery. Renner was also the No. 1 most-Googled actor of the year.

Also high on Google’s list is the NFL’s Travis Kelce, the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs who helped bring home a Super Bowl victory in Feburary. Kelce, who was the No. 3 most-Googled person and No. 2 most-Googled athlete in the U.S. this year, has also been publicly dating pop superstar Taylor Swift since July.

In one of the more surprising results, McDonald’s Grimace Shake was the No. 1 most-Googled recipe in the U.S. in 2023. The purple milkshake inspired a viral TikTok trend this summer, with users trying Grimace’s berry-flavored beverage and then pretending to die.

The top Google search that began with the phrase “How often…” was in response to another viral Internet trend that encouraged users to ask men, “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?” The question took the No. 1 spot on Google’s most-searched trend list in the U.S. as well.

The most-searched “Explained” query on Google was “The Menu explained,” referring to the 2022 film starring Ralph Fiennes as a celebrity chef, and Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult as a couple who dine in his restaurant.

And finally, the most-Googled meme in the U.S. of 2023 was Kevin James, referring to an image of the actor with his hands in his pockets and smirking at the camera.

  • McDonald’s is opening a new chain called CosMc’s. Here are the locations and menu.

McDonald’s is opening a new chain called CosMc’s. Here are the locations and menu.

A first look at the McDonald’s concept CosMc’s

A first look at the McDonald’s concept CosMc’s

    00:28

McDonald’s said it is opening a new chain called CosMc’s that will focus on coffee and other drinks, a step that is viewed as a challenge to Starbucks and Dunkin’ as the fast-food giant seeks to boost afternoon sales.

The company opened its first CosMc’s location in Illinois on Thursday, with plans to open additional restaurants in 2024.

The rationale for the restaurant stems for the growing demand for an “afternoon beverage pick-me-up occasion,” a $100 billion market where McDonald’s currently isn’t a strong presence, said McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski, speaking at an investor presentation on Wednesday. The new chain will allow the company to create customized beverages that are difficult for McDonald’s restaurants to create, he added.

CosMc’s concept is “what would happen if a McDonald’s character from the 1980s that was part alien, part surfer, part robot” opened a restaurant in 2023, Kempczinski added.

    What’s on CosMc’s menu?

The chain will include new customizable drinks and McDonald’s favorites like the Egg McMuffin, the CEO noted.

Some of the coffee drinks that will be offered include a churro frappe, a s’mores cold brew and a tumeric-spiced latte, according to the company. CosMc’s will also sell non-coffee beverages, including a sour cherry energy burst, a blackberry mint green tea and a popping pear slush.

CosMC’s coffee drink options will include a churro frappe, s’mores cold brew and tumeric-spiced latte. Non-coffee beverages include a sour cherry energy burst, blackberry mint green tea and popping pear slush.

    McDonald’s

The chain will also offer “sweet and savory treats,” Kempczinski said. These include a spicy queso sandwich, a creamy avocado tomatillo sandwich, pretzel bites and caramel fudge brownies.

What kind of drink customizations will it have?

McDonald’s said CosMc’s will offer customizations including popping boba, flavor syrups and energy and Vitamin C shots.

    Where are CosMc’s locations?

The first location is in Bolingbrook, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, with about 10 additional locations set to open in Texas in 2024, Kempczinski told investors.

The first CosMc opened to the public on Thursday, located off Weber Road in Bolingbrook, according to CBS News Chicago. The opening drew throngs of customers, leading to long lines of cars waiting to place their orders at the drive-through. One customer told CBS Chicago he waited three hours to get a frappe.

It’s not clear yet whether CosMc’s will expand beyond the Illinois and Texas locations. The company said it will study the results for at least a year before determining whether to add more locations.

Is McDonald’s adding more of its own restaurants?

Yes, McDonald’s plans to open about 10,000 new stores worldwide by 2027 in what it anticipates will be the “fastest period of growth” in its 60-year history, the company said Wednesday.

That comes as same-store sales jumped 8.1% in the third quarter, pushing the chain to speed up the pace of its restaurant openings.

McDonald’s plans to open about 10,000 new stores worldwide by 2027 in what it anticipates will be the “fastest period of growth” in its 60-year history, the company said in a news statement on Wednesday.

While inflation has sent prices at fast food restaurants skyrocketing and prices at limited-service restaurants up 6.2% over the past year, McDonald’s has not felt the pinch: Same-store sales are up 8.1% and the company reported $6.69 billion in revenue for the third quarter. This increased demand has pushed the company to “accelerate the pace of restaurant openings,” from 40,000 McDonald’s in over 100 countries to 50,000 stores.

In an email to CBS News, a McDonald’s spokesperson confirmed it targets opening 900 restaurants in the U.S. and the rest internationally. Coupled with the openings, the company said McDonald’s will double down on its loyalty program with goals to increase from 150 million users to 250 million by 2027.

McDonald’s is also planning to use artificial intelligence and cloud technology to enhance its restaurant operations. The company announced it will work with Google Cloud on automation innovation to lead to “hotter, fresher food.” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said they are “excited to see how McDonald’s will use our generative AI, cloud, and edge computing tools.”

McDonald’s has experimented with using AI to streamline its operations for years. In 2019, the company purchased Israeli technology company Dynamic Yield for $300 million to change digital menu boards based on customer preferences.

Last December, McDonald’s opened its first automated test restaurant in Texas to find “new ways to serve [customers] faster and easier than ever before.” Humans are hardly involved; customers can order through the mobile app or kiosk and an automatic conveyor brings the food to customers. Amid a labor shortage, experts are predicting a shift towards automation, particularly in low-wage positions in the fast-food and service industries.

Beginning in 2024, McDonald’s said the company will roll out new software, aided by AI, for all customers and restaurants.
