PORTLAND, Ore. –
TriMet is proposing significant bus and light rail service changes beginning in August 2026 as part of a plan to close a projected $300 million annual budget shortfall.
The proposal would reduce or modify service on 35 bus lines, shorten the MAX Green Line, and eliminate bus service in parts of South Gresham, West Linn and Tualatin. The changes are aimed at reducing duplication between bus and MAX routes while maintaining service where ridership is highest.
TriMet officials say the proposed cuts, combined with about $150 million in previously identified spending reductions, are necessary to stabilize the agency’s finances.
“The proposals focus on efficiency and cost savings, while continuing to provide the most service possible for the people who rely on us every day,” TriMet General Manager Sam Desue Jr. said in a statement. “Despite some necessary service reductions, our goal remains the same – to ensure long-term financial stability.”
According to TriMet, rising costs driven by inflation, lower fare revenue and insufficient long-term funding have contributed to the budget gap. Without changes, the agency has warned it could face a fiscal cliff that would force deeper service reductions.
Under the plan, TriMet would prioritize maintaining Frequent Service lines and access to key destinations such as schools and medical facilities. Some bus routes with very low ridership would be discontinued, and service frequency would be reduced during periods when fewer people are riding.
The MAX Green Line would be shortened, and bus service would be eliminated along Stafford and Salamo roads in West Linn and Tualatin-Sherwood Road in Tualatin. TriMet says many of the route changes are designed to shift service rather than eliminate it entirely, preserving transit access in areas with higher demand.
The agency is targeting Aug. 23, 2026, for most of the changes, earlier than initially planned. TriMet officials said launching the new service plan in late summer would allow the majority of changes to take effect before high school and college students return to campus. Additional adjustments could follow later in 2026 and into 2027.
The proposal also includes a slight adjustment to the service boundary for TriMet’s LIFT paratransit program. TriMet estimates the change would affect fewer than 0.5% of LIFT trips.
TriMet is asking riders and community members to review the proposal and provide feedback by Jan. 31. The agency has launched an online survey and scheduled in-person and virtual open houses across its tri-county service area throughout January.

Public comment will also be accepted during TriMet Board meetings in January, February and March. A special board listening session is scheduled for March 18 in downtown Portland.
The proposed service plan is based on ridership data and feedback collected in late 2025, when more than 4,800 people responded to a TriMet survey about how the agency should approach one of the largest service reductions in its history. Respondents said TriMet should first reduce overlapping routes, preserve Frequent Service lines and maintain access to critical destinations.
TriMet’s Board of Directors is expected to review the plan in March and vote in April. If approved, the service changes would be included in the agency’s budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026.

(AP) – Boeing is getting back the ability to perform final safety inspections on 737 Max jetliners and certify them for flight more than six years after crashes of the then-new model killed 346 people, the Federal Aviation Administration said Friday.
The FAA said it decided to restore the aerospace company’s authorization to issue airworthiness certificates for Max and 787 Dreamliner passenger planes starting Monday following “a thorough review of Boeing’s ongoing production quality.”
Federal regulators took full control over 737 Max approvals in 2019, after the second of two crashes that were later blamed on a new software system Boeing developed for the aircraft. The FAA ended the company’s right to self-certify Dreamliners in 2022, citing ongoing production quality issues.
Going forward, Boeing and FAA inspectors will take weekly turns performing the safety checks that are required before aircraft are cleared for delivery and declared safe to fly. The FAA said the arrangement will free up more of its inspectors to conduct “rigorous” quality checks on the production line at Boeing plants.
The Associated Press sent emailed requests Friday to Boeing for comment.
The company’s stock price was up about 4% in afternoon trading, as the FAA announcement coincided with news about Boeing securing two more orders from foreign airlines.
Turkey’s flag carrier, Turkish Airlines, said Friday that it planned to buy 75 Dreamliners and wants to eventually buy up to 150 more 737 Max jets. Boeing said the Max purchase would be the largest single order for its best-selling aircraft, if the deal is finalized.
Norwegian Group, the aviation company that operates Norwegian Air Shuttle and regional airline WiderN�also placed an order for 30 Boeing 737 Max 8 planes, Boeing said Friday.
Since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House this year, his administration has made Boeing a focus of its plans to revive U.S. manufacturing. A number of international airlines have signed sales agreements with Boeing in recent months.
Some Boeing critics have questioned how meaningfully the company has reformed its culture and processes to ensure the passenger planes it produces are safe.
The FAA announced earlier this month that it was seeking $3.1 million in fines from Boeing over alleged safety violations between September 2023 and February 2024, including a blowout of a paneled-over exit door on a 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight.
After the January 2024 Alaska Airlines incident, the FAA capped Boeing’s production of Max jets to 38 per month. In practice, the production rate fell well below that ceiling last year as the company contended with investigations and a machinists’ strike that idled factories for almost eight weeks.
The company said in July that it reached the monthly cap in the second quarter and would eventually seek the FAA’s permission to increase production.
The FAA said in a Friday statement that if Boeing requests an increase, “onsite FAA safety inspectors will conduct extensive planning and reviews with Boeing to determine if they can safely produce more airplanes.”

SAN JOSE — A man jailed and charged with fatally shooting a woman he was dating, along with her roommate and another man, in a violent episode at a South San Jose apartment, was under police scrutiny after the woman accused him of assaulting her over two days prior to the killings, authorities have revealed in new court filings.
The shooting suspect, 27-year-old Joseph Vicencio, reportedly told an acquaintance that he “couldn’t have any ‘loose ends’ and people talking about him” shortly before he went over to the woman’s apartment early Tuesday and unleashed a torrent of gunfire that ended three lives.
According to a criminal complaint filed Friday by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, Vicencio was charged with three counts of murder in the deaths of Tarrah Lynn Taylor, 27; Jeannessa Caillean Lurie, 24; and Max Chavez Ryan, 27.
A probable cause affidavit written by San Jose police detectives stated that Taylor was in a romantic relationship with Vicencio, and that Lurie was her roommate. Ryan’s connection to the group was not detailed in the court document.
The three murder counts each carry maximum sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole, and are accompanied by nine charging enhancements for allegations including using a gun, dissuading a witness and having prior convictions. Vicencio was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, and for two separate domestic violence assaults alleged to have occurred on Sept. 14 and 15, preceding the Sept. 16 shootings.

Vicencio is being held without bail in the Santa Clara County Main Jail, and was scheduled for arraignment Friday afternoon. He was arrested early Wednesday based on video surveillance images and two witnesses who claimed to know Vicencio and recounted their interactions with him before and after the shootings, the detectives wrote.
One of the witnesses told police that Vicencio was anxious about being in trouble with the law after he allegedly punched Taylor in the torso on Sept. 15, and the subsequent police response found bruising on her neck indicating that Vicencio choked her the day before. The two reported assaults account for misdemeanor and felony assault charges filed against Vicencio.
During one conversation with the witness, Vicencio implied that he was going to silence Taylor and Lurie, and after the shootings, Vicencio reportedly used the witness’s computer to “search for information about San Jose murders.”
A second witness, as described by the detectives, reported getting a call from Vicencio about seven hours after the shootings in which he said “he was in trouble with police and had issues with where he lived and needed help.” The witness claimed to have confronted Vicencio about the killings, prompting Vicencio to reportedly tell the witness “there was an issue with a male at the apartment but he handled it.”
Gunfire and the sound of a woman screaming prompted a 911 call at 12:26 a.m. Tuesday from the 200 block of Chynoweth Avenue. The police affidavit stated that responding officers went to an apartment building and found Taylor outside “bleeding profusely from multiple gunshots.”
Officers went inside and found two more victims, Lurie and Ryan. Lurie was pronounced dead at the scene; Taylor and Ryan died later that morning after being taken to a hospital. Police recovered multiple .40 caliber bullet casings from the crime scene.
The affidavit states that surveillance video from the area recorded someone later identified as Vicencio entering the apartment and fleeing immediately after the gunfire. Vicencio was seen with a distinct satchel that one of the witnesses said concealed a firearm that he carried, and that witness reported that Vicencio was not carrying the satchel after the shootings.
Ryan worked for the city’s housing department as a member of the Homelessness Response Outreach Team, and was “a valued member of our work family,” according to a Facebook post from the department.
“His commitment to the people of San Jose, and in particular the most vulnerable among us, exemplified the thoughtful, caring human he was,” the post read. “He will be remembered not only for his professional contributions, but also for his kindness, compassion, and spirit.”
Lurie graduated from California State University, Monterey Bay in 2024 with degrees in humanities and communications, and she worked as a dog trainer at Bite Club K9 in Monterey, according to her Facebook and LinkedIn pages. She attended Mid-Peninsula High School in Menlo Park, graduating in 2019, according to her LinkedIn page.
“We love you and the sunshine that surrounded you, and now lights the heavens,” one commenter wrote on her Facebook page Wednesday.
Vicencio garnered headlines for violence in 2019 after he was arrested and charged with shooting at the San Jose State University library and a parking garage. He was convicted and was incarcerated but was released after about a year and eventually got the conviction expunged, according to sources and court records. His criminal history in the county outlines struggles with mental health, and legal trouble over gun possession; he was supervised under the court’s mental-health treatment division for much of 2022.
In a 2024 Reddit post, Vicencio sought advice from fellow San Jose residents after struggling to get a job while on parole, in which he described being turned down for work “because my last crime is violent (assault with a semi automatic firearm).” When another Reddit user identified his connection to the library shooting, he responded, “Yup that’s me. Wasn’t on purpose but yeah,” followed by him writing, “Thank you for recognizing I have taken accountability.”

When you get permission to rule over the DC Universe, what’s the first franchise to take up, up, and away? If you ask DC’s new boss James Gunn, the answer is, of course, Creature Commandos. Wait, creature what-now? Slated to premiere on Max on December 5, Creature Commandos is a new adult-oriented animated series based on a mighty obscure superhero team from DC Comics. On day two at New York Comic Con 2024, series creator James Gunn appeared on the main stage — along with members of the show’s cast — and revealed why Creature Commandos, of all things, is launching the “new” DCU – and what it might foreshadow about the DCU’s future.
Gunn began work on the show entirely of his own volition after the success of his other DC series Peacemaker. “The truth is, I had talked to Max after Peacemaker did so well. I talked to Peter Girardi at WB Animation about creating an animated series,” Gunn explained. “I like the Creature Commandos. I love monsters. I love Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. It just seemed like the perfect thing to do. I wrote the scripts without even having a deal, and I happened to get hired as the head of DC Studios. And I very graciously, thank you self, greenlit the show.”
During the panel, a new two-minute trailer for Creature Commandos premiered to rapturous enthusiasm from the audience. With a vivid art and animation style with deep, bold colors, the trailer introduces each member of the Creature Commandos, voiced by David Harbour (as Eric Frankenstein), Indira Varma (as the Bride), Frank Grillo (as Rick Flagg Sr.), Alan Tudyk (as Dr. Phosphorus), Zoë Chao (as Nina Mazursky), and Sean Gunn (as both G.I. Brobot and reprising his Weasel from The Suicide Squad), as well as all their unique monstrous abilities. The trailer goes hard and heavy on the bloodletting, along with some cameos from other DC characters like Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller.
“We want this to be very different from what Superman is going to be when that comes out,” Gunn said. “We want Peacemaker to be different from that.”
Gunn also confirmed DC actors will portray their characters across live-action and animation productions. For example: Frank Grillo, who stars as Rick Flagg Sr., will reprise his Creature Commandos role in both Superman and Peacemaker season 2. (Grillo commented that his white hair as Rick Flagg conflicted with his shooting schedule for Paramount’s Tulsa King.)
Name-dropping in-development projects like Supergirl and Lanterns and insisting they will be different too, Gunn clarified “it’s a connected universe, but we’re not imposing any sort of overall aesthetic. And Creature Commandos is definitely its own thing.”

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Relatives of passengers who died in Boeing Max crashes will tell a judge to throw out a plea agreement that they say is a sweetheart deal for Boeing.
A federal judge in Texas will hear arguments over the plea deal on Friday.
Boeing is ready to plead guilty to a single felony count of conspiracy to commit fraud in connection with winning regulatory approval of the airplane.
The deal calls for Boeing to pay a $244 million fine, invest in safety programs, and be put on probation for three years.
But passengers’ relatives say the punishment is too light.
And they’re angry that no Boeing officials are facing criminal charges.

At this point in our society, everyone has their favorite Stephen King stories. As a fan of The Shining, I love when King gets a little twisted. But when he does lean into the horrifying beasts and monsters of our nightmares, it is always a good time.
That’s where Salem’s Lot lives. The 1975 novel follows a writer who returns to a town he lived in as a child only to discover that vampires are running amok. The 2024 film stars Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears, a writer who has come home. As he’s looking around his hometown, trying to remember what it was like when he lived there, he finds that everything isn’t as it seems.
Set in the 70s, the joy of the film comes from the small town vibes that take over Jerusalem’s Lot. The Gary Dauberman take on Salem’s Lot doesn’t stray far from the vibes you’d expect. Just a straight forward look at the vampire story without adjusting too much of the story. But it makes for a refreshing look into King’s work.
We’ve seen vampire stories done time and time again but King has a unique ability to bring a typical monster story to life with a deeper meaning hidden within its pages. This adaptation of Salem’s Lot is a little more straight forward. However those themes are still important.
Pullman’s Ben is charismatic and smart but he is also seen as an outsider to the sleepy town. When he starts to fall for a girl named Susan (Makenzie Leigh) in town, he realizes how deep the hatred the citizens have for “outsiders” resides. It is why the vampires having their time in town comes as such a shock to those humans still living in Salem’s Lot.
Outside of Pullman and Leigh’s ability as romantic leads, the film has Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody, a physician trying to navigate the infestation and figure out what is happening to her patients. We also have a stellar younger cast with Jordan Preston Carter playing Mark, a young boy who uses his love of comics to take on the vampires in town.
The cast really makes this work. Without them leading the charge, it could be another vampire movie we all forget about. But with a lot riding against this (like beloved previous adaptations), Dauberman manages to make a version of Salem’s Lot that feels like a softball entry into King’s world for new fans. But it also shares that love and appreciation of the stories that King wrote for older fans.
It isn’t a perfect adaptation nor is it the best King story out there. But this Salem’s Lot is just a nice spooky tale to have this Halloween season. I don’t think it really needs to reinvent the horror wheel nor do I think it is a movie that aims to do that. If anything, it just feels like a fun and easy thing to watch this Halloween.
If you’re looking for that King adaptation to dive into this October, Salem’s Lot is a great choice.

The end of summer can be a barren landscape for TV, whether it’s because vacationing cuts into couch time or networks and streamers tend to stash their best new releases for the fall.
But late August is as good a time as any to try out some shows and movies that might have been overlooked during other parts of the calendar.

Here are a few streaming options to check out:
Now in its third season, BBC’s wildlife documentary narrated by actress Lupita Nyong’o weaves dramatic storytelling into the time-honored natural history format. For viewers grounded in hard science and people who will only take their animal lessons from David Attenborough, “Serengeti” requires a bit of a leap of the imagination. Filmed on a private reserve in Tanzania, one of East Africa’s most biodiverse savanna regions, the show captures stunning footage of numerous species. Its real selling point is the innovative use of drones and other camera techniques to get rare glimpses of animal behavior. The stories can get a bit heavy-handed to drum up emotional reactions, but the drama is meant to foster empathy with the trials of life and survival the animals face.
The third season of the series hits Max on Aug. 25.
It’s a bit unfortunate that 2015’s “Room” is so near in name to “The Room,” Tommy’s Wiseau’s cult classic melodrama that’s known for being endearingly horrible. In 2017, “The Room” went mainstream with a film adaptation of the book “The Disaster Artist,” making it easy to get it jumbled with “Room.”
In this gripping drama starring Brie Larson, viewers must imagine how motherly love and hope could persist amid the claustrophobia and trauma of captivity. Larson plays a woman who’s been held in a filthy shed for seven years, including five she spent raising a son she had as a result of being raped by her captor. Based on a novel by Emma Donoghue, “Room” paints a believable picture of how a mother and growing child would find ways to cope in this situation — and how they eventually might plot an escape.
“Room” is now streaming on Netflix.
In 2000, Steve McNair and the Tennessee Titans came within a yard of winning Super Bowl XXXIV in a game remembered for one of the most thrilling championship finishes in NFL history. McNair was a perennial star who was named co-MVP with Peyton Manning in 2003. His life was tragically cut short in a shooting that was ruled a murder-suicide on the Fourth of July in 2009.
Fifteen years later, the investigation into McNair’s death is examined in a new volume of Netflix’s “Untold” documentary series. McNair was 36 when he was killed by his 20-year-old girlfriend, Jenni Kazemi, who had purchased a gun the night before the shooting at a condo in downtown Nashville. The documentary looks at various circumstances surrounding the shooting and pays tribute to McNair through interviews with those close to him, including former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher.
The documentary is now available to stream on Netflix.

HBO has released the first footage of the second season of The Last of Us, and it implies that things for Pedro Pascal’s Joel may be a little bit different than they are in the game. No, not that different, but it seems like he might be going to therapy.
The brief, 24-second teaser shows a few familiar scenes originating from The Last of Us Part II. These include the dance scene in which Bella Ramsey’s Ellie kisses Dina, flashes of characters like Jeffrey Wright’s Isaac who leads the militaristic Washington Liberation Front, and a few glimpses of the Seraphites, the Seattle cult which also occupies the city. But one character seems to be someone entirely new. This person, played by Schitt’s Creek and Home Alone actor Catherine O’Hara, seems to be Joel’s therapist. She is shown asking if he hurt Ellie, which he denies. Instead, he insists he saved her.
This seems like a new take on the opening scene of The Last of Us Part II, in which Joel recounts the violent events of the first game’s finale to his brother Tommy. He finishes his story with the same line: “I saved her.” So it seems Joel might be confessing his murder of the Fireflies to someone other than family in the show when it premieres on Max in 2025. The first season played things pretty close to the original, but it did make some big changes to Bill and Frank’s relationship, and added entirely new characters of its own, like Melanie Lynskey’s Kathleen.
Given that HBO plans to cover the events of Part II across multiple seasons of the show, it wouldn’t be surprising if it used all that extra time to riff on more plot points and character threads. The first season put a big focus on Joel’s anxiety, something which the games only hinted at, so the sad dad finally getting professional help seems in line with how the show’s been handling that side of him.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will lead season two, but HBO has announced several new cast members that will play characters from The Last of Us Part II. Most notably, Kaitlyn Dever will play Abby, the co-protagonist of the sequel.

We might have to wait a while to see it, but tonight HBO gave us our first good look at The Last of Us‘ return in action, and it looks like we’re in for a world of hurt.
Released as part of an extended tease of what’s coming in the next year during House of the Dragon‘s season finale tonight (stay tuned for our recap tomorrow!) the new footage is short, but offers some interesting hints at what the sophomore season will adapt from the award-winning Naughty Dog sequel.

The footage offers not just new glimpses of what Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s Joel and Ellie are up to (having a bad time, for the most part), but glimpses at new and returning major characters, including Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), what appears to be our first glimpses at Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), Dina (Isabela Merced), and Jeffrey Wright reprising his role as Isaac from the game. We also get our first glimpse at Catharine O’Hara’s mysterious new figure, who asks Joel an intriguing question, seemingly about Ellie: “Did you hurt her?”

Matt Reeves started to create a whole universe with the release of 2022’s The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader.
The filmmaker is expanding the world with The Penguin, an HBO original series centered on Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb, which will premiere on the premium cable network and Max in September.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves explains why two series he had been developing, set in what he calls the Batman Epic Crime Saga, had been canceled for now.
“As we were writing the movie [The Batman], I was like, ‘Hey, you know what? I think there are some cool shows that we could do,” Reeves told EW. “It was actually why I wanted to make our deal at Warner Bros.”

Reeves and producing partner Dylan Clark had been working on a couple of series, one focusing on the Gotham Police Department and a second set in the Arkham Asylum. HBO executives gave Reeves notes and the filmmaker said that some elements will be making it into The Penguin.
“They were like, ‘We like what you’re doing, and we want to lean harder into the marquee characters,’” Reeves said.
He continued, “What’s interesting is that, in the movie, the big red herring of the story is it seems like the person they’re looking for, that the Riddler’s pointing to must be the Penguin, some kind of informant. This movie creates a power vacuum, and because Penguin is so underestimated, people don’t really see who he is.”
Reeves said he “wanted it to be, not in a grandiose way, but in a mythic Shakespearean way, this kind of great tale.”

Before Robert Pattinson donned the cowl in 2022’s The Batman, it was revealed director Matt Reeves and Sopranos’ Terrence Winter were working on a TV spinoff focused on Gotham City’s police department. Over time, the show seemingly evolved to focus on mainstay Batman location Arkham Asylum, but news on it has been nonexistent for two years. Now, it seems like that show may not make it to fruition–or at least, not in the form it was originally pitched to the public.
Per Variety, the series won’t be going forward over at Max, or at least the one conceived by Antonio Campos. He signed on for the series back in 2022, months after its Arkham pivot was revealed. The outlet acknowledged that while this version of the show has been rejected, there’s a chance that a different series focused on the Asylum or Gotham’s finest could emerge in the aftermath. Regarless, it’s been a tumultuous road for this show: it was originally conceived as being set a year prior to The Batman. Months later, Winter left the project, after which Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton stepped in.
After James Gunn and Peter Safran were inducted as the new DC Films heads, Gunn said the Arkham show would be set in the same universe as the upcoming movies, rather than the world of The Batman. Presumably, that’ll still hold true if a new version of the series ever crops up. Reeves’ isolated Batman-verse won’t be bereft of TV, though: a spinoff focused on Colin Farrell’s scene stealer Penguin will headline his own titular series, which The Hollywood Reporter claims will begin airing on September 8. Mr. Battinson will return to the silver screen with The Batman Part II (again directed by Reeves), with a current release date of October 2, 2026.

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, whose House Targaryen history tome Fire & Blood is now hitting screens as HBO and Max’s House of the Dragon, isn’t directly involved in writing the series, which is now in its second season. But he’s been watching, and so far he’s really liking it—with one new addition that he loved so much, he wishes he’d thought of it himself.
If you’re not caught up on House of the Dragon season two, which is about to unveil its fourth episode on Sunday, spoilers follow.
Fans of Fire & Blood all knew that Blood and Cheese—assassins hired by Daemon Targaryen to infiltrate the Red Keep—were going to pop up early in the show’s second season. Daemon’s instructions are to murder Aemond Targaryen, the Team Green young adult responsible for the death of Rhaenyra’s son Luke in the season one finale. It’s payback, trading “A Son for a Son,” as the season premiere episode title goes. But when the ratcatcher (Cheese, played by Mark Stobbart) and the swordsman (Blood, played by Sam C. Wilson) get inside the castle, they can’t locate Aemond. Instead, they grab the next in line to the throne: King Aegon II’s son, just a toddler, and saw his little head off. It’s grim, it’s a PR disaster for Team Black, and it’s yet another gruesome rung on the ladder toward all-out war in Westeros.
But there’s a new character involved: Cheese’s loyal dog. Cheese is not a nice guy, and he’s certainly not always nice to his four-legged companion. But we see just how connected they are when—in the second episode, “Rhaenyra the Cruel”—Aegon orders all the ratcatchers employed by the crown to be publicly executed. Blood didn’t know Cheese’s name, you see, so the king figured he’d better just exterminate all of them to make sure he got the culprit. As ratcatcher-adjacent friends and family spot their loved ones dangling high above King’s Landing, and react with anguished cries, we see one particularly sad face. A furry one.
In his glowing review of the first two episodes, posted on his Not a Blog, Martin gave a special shout-out to House of the Dragon‘s writers for incorporating that new detail. “The show added a brand new character,” Martin wrote. “The dog. I am… ahem… not usually a fan of screenwriters adding characters to the source material when adapting a story. Especially not when the source material is mine. But that dog was brilliant. I was prepared to hate Cheese, but I hated him even more when he kicked that dog. And later, when the dog [sat] at his feet, gazing up… that damn near broke my heart. Such a little thing… such a little dog… but his presence, the few short moments he was on screen, gave the ratcatcher so much humanity. Human beings are such complex creatures. The silent presence of that dog reminded us that even the worst of men, the vile and the venal, can love and be loved.”
Martin also added: “I wish I’d thought of that dog. I didn’t, but someone else did. I am glad of that.”

House of the Dragon has been teasing a terrible civil war in Westeros since the foundations were laid in season one—and now, with House Targaryen bitterly divided, battles are just over the horizon. This week, in episode three, “The Burning Mill,” we see one last attempt at reconciliation—as well as the beginnings of a few journeys, a mysterious new character, and some spooky-castle shenanigans.
Ah, the Riverlands. A place of green fields, picturesque windmills, and generations-long feuds between adjacent houses, as we see when young knights from House Bracken and House Blackwood get in each other’s faces at the border dividing their lands. These days, current events are bolstering their anger: one side’s loyal to Queen Rhaenyra, the other calls her a “babekiller” and “kinslayer” and takes the side of Team Green. Insults lead to shoving, shoving leads to swords, then the scene cuts and we see a full-on battle has taken place between the houses. The land is riddled with bodies, and that quaint windmill is now a burned-out husk.
Speaking of bodies, there’s a double burial happening on Dragonstone: the Cargill twins, reunited in their grave. As a somber Rhaenyra ponders her next move—a furious Jace wants to keep the cycle of revenge going—Rhaenys, who correctly senses that Otto Hightower has been shoved aside and that the assassination attempt was the work of “hotter blood,” sidles in with a suggestion, delivering the killer lines we’ve heard in House of the Dragon trailers. “There may be another way: Alicent Hightower … she knows war is coming and that it will be savage beyond all compare,” Rhaenys says. “There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin. And no war so bloody as a war between dragons.” Alicent could be their last hope to prevent a terrible war. Rhaenyra’s skeptical, but Rhaenys’ words make her think of the raven that came from King’s Landing bearing a message from her old friend after Luke was killed… which she has yet to read.

Speaking of King’s Landing, Ser Criston Cole–now Hand of the King, in addition to being Lord Commander of the Kingsguard–is dawdling before a Small Council meeting. When he gets there, war is (unsurprisingly) the main topic, with Aemond updating everyone about the Bracken-Blackwood battle, and King Aegon bitchily asking what their next move is. There are many suggestions, to the point where everyone is talking over each other and Alicent speaks sharply about the Council’s lack of discipline, but Cole opines that the Riverlands are the key to winning the war, and that Harrenhal is the key to the Riverlands. He’ll lead the army there himself, he says—this is a guy who really does not want to attend any more of these meetings—with Aemond, but not Vhagar, who is needed on the home front defending King’s Landing. “I’ll come too, with Sunfyre,” King Aegon pipes in, an idea nobody supports; you get the sense it’s partially because they want to travel without drawing too much attention (something a dragon always brings), but also because, let’s face it, nobody wants Aegon in the mix.
Back on Dragonstone, before a gorgeous sunset view featuring a lone dragon flapping around in the distance, Rhaenyra is having a chat with Mysaria—who, having been given her freedom in last week’s episode, turned back at the last minute when she realized a certain ill-meaning twin had just arrived on the island. Mysaria, who says she’s still surprised that Rhaenyra was willing to let her go, would like a reward: a place in Rhaenyra’s court. She has valuable information about the inner workings of the Red Keep, and no love for the Hightowers; she’s also here to advocate for the smallfolk, and figures Rhaenyra is the ruler most likely to show them mercy. “One turn for another, then,” Rhaenyra says, and we can see a mutual respect of sorts forming between these two very differently positioned women.
Inside the castle, we finally spend more than a few passing seconds with Rhaena: Daemon’s daughter, and the younger sister of Baela. (In George R.R. Martin’s text, they’re twins, but she’s definitely positioned as the second sibling here.) Rhaenyra has a task for her, involving the younger Targaryens: she’ll take Joffrey (Rhaenyra’s youngest dark-haired son) and his dragon to the Vale, where he’ll become the ward of Lady Arryn; then, Rhaena will become the de facto mother figure for Rhaenyra’s blonde kids with Daemon (Aegon and Viserys, and yes the repeated names are confusing), taking them to Pentos for safety. As we’ve seen, no cute little kid is safe in this particular war. “Make this sacrifice willingly, for all of us,” Rhaenyra urges her. Rhaena isn’t happy about it, but if there’s one thing women in Westeros know about… it’s making sacrifices.

And now, at last, we pick back up with Daemon as he flies through howling night winds into Harrenhal, the biggest castle in Westeros and also, need we remind you, the spookiest. It’s also incredibly damp, thanks to all the damage it’s taken over the years, and Daemon stomps through puddles and flurries of bats indoors, killing a guard on the way just because he can. If this was a vintage horror movie, he’d encounter Lon Chaney Jr. lurking in the dark, but since this is House of the Dragon and not House of Dracula, instead he meets… Ser Simon Strong, played by British stage legend Sir Simon Russell Beale, having dinner in one of the castle’s few vaguely cozy rooms.
Ser Simon has no objection to ceding control of Harrenhal to Team Black—he’s no fan of his cunningly murderous great-nephew, Ser Larys—though Daemon’s skeptical of his hospitality, and snaps at him for mistakenly calling him “my Prince” instead of “Your Grace.” For his part, Ser Simon thinks Daemon’s plan to raise an army in the Riverlands is a dubious one; the region’s liege lord, Lord Grover Tully, is a frail old man unlikely to comprehend what’s at stake. What’s the endgame here, Ser Simon wonders? This very droll exchange follows.
Daemon: “We march on King’s Landing and take the throne.”
Ser Simon: “The throne?”
Daemon: “It’s a big chair… made of swords.”
In King’s Landing, Cole’s army prepares to march with a new face in tow: Ser Gwayne Hightower, Alicent’s brother. He meets Cole with a polite but frosty attitude (Gwayne’s not thrilled Cole took Otto’s place as the Hand), and things get a little weird when Cole says goodbye to Alicent, asking for her favor (which takes the form of a handkerchief she pulls out of her cleavage) as he departs, and Gwayne looks on quizzically. The camera pulls up as the host rides out, and in the foreground we see one of the rat catcher corpses from last week, looking a bit more decayed, and with a crow making short work of its eyes.

On Dragonstone, the tension is rising along with the anticipation of this army—which Team Black has yet to spot, but knows must be forming; the fact that Daemon hasn’t sent any updates since he flounced away isn’t helping. Rhaenyra’s Small Council wants her to act, be that by sending dragons to burn all who oppose her, or hiding herself away and letting the council (another way of putting that is “the menfolk”) rule in her stead. After Rhaenyra departs in disgust, Rhaenys has another notable quotable to share, reminding everyone that “their Queen wears the crown of my grandsire, Jaeharys the Conciliator, a prudent ruler, the wisest of Targaryen kings, whose reign outlasted every other, even Aegon the Conquerer’s.”
But Rhaenys knows there’s trouble afoot, and she doesn’t correct Corlys in the next scene, in a rainy Driftmark rendezvous, when he refers to the Small Council as “the ditherers of Dragonstone.” The interaction between husband and wife, like so many of their meetings, is shot through with affection as well as subtle disagreements, including that old question of who should inherit Driftmark (currently, it’s little Joffrey, who’s about to be spending the rest of his childhood far from the sea). There’s a new urgency to their talk of heirs, a tumultuous subject—as we saw last season, when Corlys suffered a great injury and it seemed Lucerys Velaryon (RIP) would be inheriting Driftmark sooner than expected. “We are at war,” Rhaenys reminds the Sea Snake, and worries that something might happen to him.
On nearby Dragonstone, Rhaena bids farewell, preparing for her journey with small children and small dragons in tow. She’s resentful; Baela, who’s not only older, but has her own dragon to ride, gets to stay behind and take an active part in the war effort. But there’s a softening when Rhaenyra shows Rhaena that she’ll also be caring for a clutch of precious dragon eggs; if the worst happens in Westeros, she’ll be an important source of hope for the Targaryen future.

After Rhaenyra says good-bye to her sons (except Jace, he gets to stay), we cut to King’s Landing, where Alicent and Heleana have a poignant conversation about motherhood, grief, and loss. And the elephant in the room comes out: “I forgive you,” Heleana tells her teary-eyed mother, and we all know she means her mother’s forbidden affair with Cole. In a nearby chamber, King Aegon (“the magnanimous”) is being fitted with… Aegon the Conquerer’s own snazzy armor. He’s planning to fly into battle, despite everyone else agreeing it’s a terrible idea. Ser Larys appears, as always armed with a bit of information that’s secretly manipulation in disguise, and says there’s talk that Aegon has been tricked into going into battle because that’s what his Small Council, including Alicent, wants, so that she and Aemond can rule in his absence. As Aegon is taking this in, he makes another impulsive appointment, naming Larys his Master of Whisperers.
And it works! Aegon decides that rather than going to battle, he’ll… spend another drunken night out on the town instead. In a scene that immerses us in King’s Landing after hours, we meet a new character. It’s a brief moment, but it’s important, since this is the bastard son of Baelon Targaryen—which makes him Daemon and Viserys’ half-brother, and Rhaenyra’s uncle. Why he’s sharing this information with random strangers (look closely; one is Samson Kayo from Our Flag Means Death) in a tavern isn’t clear, and we learn no more for now because just then King Aegon, who’s unaware of the man’s identity, shows up ready to party his face off.

Awkward family reunion averted–until Aegon walks in on Aemond snuggled up with his favorite lady of the night, to Aegon’s hooting, taunting delight. Aemond’s reaction is to stand on the table—classic Game of Thrones-style full-frontal nudity alert, though there’s tasteful shadowing—and stalk out of the room (wearing not a stitch, not even his eye patch), pretending he’s totally unbothered.
On Dragonstone, a contemplative Rhaenyra decides that now, at last, is the moment to open her message from Alicent. We can’t read the message, but the word “mother” definitely appears.
En route to the Riverlands, Cole and Ser Gwayne Hightower continue to not like each other. Gwayne has decided to take his lieutenants to a nearby tavern so they can enjoy some creature comforts, while Cole’s men are all camped on the hard ground. “We will rendezvous with your army at first light,” Gwayne says breezily, as the camera tilts up to show us the current position of the sun, and—hey now, what’s that in the sky? Dragonnnnnn! Cole, Gwayne, and Gwayne’s men gallop for the safety of nearby tree cover as Baela, riding Moondancer, swoops in overhead. She’s there merely to observe, not engage, but you can see in her face she’s got a bit of that season-one Rhaenys “I want to set you all on fire” urge in her, and she gives the men a good scare. Ser Gwayne, for one, looks like he might have peed his pants a little, and finally admits Cole might know what he’s doing after all. Stealth is now the way forward for this army—“and no fucking inns,” Cole hisses.
When Baela reports back to Rhaenyra and her Small Council, again they urge it’s time to take action. Past time, really. She takes it in and says she’ll consider their arguments, as we cut to Rhaenys—and can tell she’s realizing Rhanyra is finally going to take her advice.
But first, you may be wondering, as the Small Council on Dragonstone certainly has been: what the hell has Daemon been up to? Wandering around the ruins of Harrenhal, it turns out—a place full of dripping water, barricaded doorways, and whispers from the past. He encounters an impossible tableau: young Rhaenyra, played by a returning Milly Alcock. “Always coming and going, aren’t you,” she sighs at Daemon. “And I have to clean up afterwards.” As the camera comes around we see she’s stitching little Jaehaerys Targaryen’s head onto his neck. In an instant, the vision is gone, and a strange woman—someone we saw earlier alongside Ser Simon—appears and says “You will die in this place.”
With that uneasiness lingering, we return to Dragonstone; there’s no sneaking into King’s Landing without the advice of Mysaria, so Rhaenyra gets all the intel she needs to engineer a face-to-face encounter with Alicent. This includes what disguise she’ll need (a septa; it’s not the first time this episode, nor this season, that someone points out most smallfolk won’t recognize a royal out of context) and where she’ll be able to find the Dowager Queen alone (in the Great Sept of Baelor, saying her prayers). And then, it happens: a scene between Rhaenyra and Alicent, something we were not expecting to see at all this season.

And it’s quite a powerful moment. Alicent’s shock when she realizes who’s come to call is one thing; it levels up when she realizes Rhaenyra isn’t there to kill her. Rhaenyra opens with a memory we all share: the tournament that kicked off in season one. “Men trained for battle are eager to fight,” she reminds her old friend. “I know you do not have that desire within you.” But Alicent knows the Dance of the Dragons is past the point of no return. There are no terms they can come to. Too much has happened now.
As they whisper-argue over Luke and Jaeharys, the real meat of the conversation comes to the fore: what did the dying King Viserys say to Alicent that made her think he’d changed his mind about Rhaenyra being his heir? Rhaenyra can’t believe her ears when Alicent, who steadfastly believes she was honoring her husband’s wishes, says he muttered about “Aegon” and “the prince that was promised to unite the realm.” Rhaenyra knows, as we did when we saw it last season, that Viserys was referring to the Song of Ice and Fire, a dream that Aegon the Conquerer had. Wrong Aegon, Alicent! Wrong Aegon. But for Alicent, it’s too late, no matter how much Rhaenyra protests that there’s been a mistake. “There’s been no mistake,” Alicent insists. Otto’s been kicked out of court, Cole is on the march, “you know what Aemond is,” and it’s too late. As Alicent stalks away, Rhaenyra sets her jaw. Time to go to war. At last?

Way back in 2016, Vulture wrote of the now mostly forgotten Netflix series Bloodline that “Netflix did something it’s rarely done in its four-year history of original programming Wednesday: It canceled a show.” These days, updates on streaming series reckon with how “platforms invented cruel and unusual ways to cancel them.” Well, the great cancel-off of 2024 is officially on its way, and no show is safe. Without reputable sourcing on streaming audience numbers, there’s little way to know if your favorite piece of art content is actually a hit or just a hit with your friend group/online bubble/in-laws. So we end up with cancelations like Our Flag Means Death, which, based on the amount Taika Waititi fans talk about it, sure seemed like a hit. This Fool was canceled on February 14, which (besides Valentine’s Day) was Ash Wednesday. Time to think about your sins, execs. And now, we’re saying goodbye to Tokyo Vice (thankfully, we’ve prepared a speech ahead of time.) Below, a list of every TV show canceled so far in 2024.
What’s it about? Based on the book of the same name, this comedy stars Chris O’Dowd. It takes place in a small town that, per Apple TV+, “is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears, promising to reveal everyone’s true potential. Soon residents start changing jobs, rethinking relationships, and questioning long-held beliefs — all in pursuit of a better future.”

What’s it about? Per Max, the show follows “Adelstein’s (Ansel Elgort) daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo in the late 90s, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem.” During a PGA producing panel in June, the producers revealed that the Max noir thriller is closing up shop. Creator J.T. Rogers and director Alan Poul said in a statement, “Not only did they give us these two seasons, they said yes when we asked to end season one with a series of cliffhangers, and they said yes when we asked for two extra episodes so we could land the plane in the way J.T. had always envisioned.”

Eagle-eyed observers might have noticed the change with today’s announcement that Lanterns, a drama series based on DC’s Green Lanterns characters, is officially getting an eight-episode series order at HBO. That’s right: HBO at the forefront, instead of being labeled as a “Max Original” for the oft-renamed HBO streaming service.
Warner Bros. was designating DC shows as “Max Originals” rather than “HBO Originals” as late as last week, when the latest trailer for The Penguin dropped. But there’s been a shift in the branding, according to a report in Variety that HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys is “moving most of Max’s upcoming big-budget, tentpole Warner Bros. IP projects to under the HBO umbrella.”
This shift covers shows releasing in 2025 and beyond—so 2024 releases The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy are both expected to still be labeled as Max shows; “the process of licensing [The Penguin] internationally has already started,” Bloys explained. But once the calendar turns over, look for Lanterns, Stephen King-inspired It prequel series Welcome to Derry, and the Harry Potter series that WB is insistent upon making to fall under that HBO Originals banner.
This switch undoes the previous intention to keep all shows based on WB properties under the Max Originals label, and it came about when Bloys and other execs realized the WB shows weren’t all that different from HBO’s own creations. “As we started producing those shows, we were using the same methods, the same kind of thinking, as how we would approach HBO shows,” he told Variety, noting that there’s even crossover between talent, such as Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof now working on Lanterns. “The idea of the delineation kind of started to feel unnecessary … Let’s just call them what they are: HBO shows.”
What does that mean for viewers? Not a lot. It means that if you see an HBO Original being marketed, it will get the perceived prestige of being on the HBO linear channel; all HBO shows will still stream on Max. Max-only series will still exist, but they’ll be “more in the broadcast/traditional TV vein” and will have more scaled-down budgets compared to the HBO shows. When asked why the company doesn’t just make every show an HBO show, which would be the least confusing way forward, Bloys said, “I do think it is helpful to have a brand that doesn’t put the expectations or the intention of an HBO show. If it’s not designed to do that, it shouldn’t have to.”
Make of that what you will. The Penguin, perhaps the last of the DC Max Originals, arrives September 8.

Last night’s second season premiere of Game of Thrones’ spinoff House of the Dragon tackled one of George R.R. Martin’s most infamous deaths—in a new way that surprised the fandom.
In an interview with Variety, showrunner Ryan Condal explained the reasoning for the Max show’s departure from Martin’s original recollection of an event known by readers of Fire and Blood—the author’s historical explanation of Targaryen history in Westeros— as “Blood and Cheese,” named for two assassins who are responsible for the murder of Jaehaerys Targayren. In “A Son for a Son” Blood and Cheese take center stage, hired by Daemon (Matt Smith) to retaliate for the death of Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) son Lucerys at the end of last season. We pick up on the duo’s journey to do the dastardly deed which, in the show, is much more directly orchestrated than in Fire & Blood, having Rhaenyra call for Aemond’s (Ewan Mitchell) death.
“One of the things that’s challenging about adapting Fire & Blood is that there is this intentionally conflicting narrative in the book where there are often these three different viewpoints on the history that don’t line up with one another,” Condal explained, “so it’s our job as adapters to try to find the objective line through this to bring the audience into the narrative as we see it having been laid out.” In the book, it’s a whole lot more messy—Blood and Cheese weren’t given a specific target, just Daemon’s orders for “an eye for an eye, a son for a son,” and so try to kill the first boy they find.
“It felt like Rhaenyra, despite being in grief, she’s looking for vengeance, but she would choose a target that would have some kind of strategic or military advantage,” Condal continued. “Of course, if you did take out Aemond, not only would he be punished directly for his betrayal and murder of Luke, but it would eliminate the rider of the biggest dragon in the world, and immediately create an advantage for their side.” Jaehaerys still dies in House of the Dragon, but it’s presented more as due to Blood and Cheese’s incompetence—instead of finding Aemond, the assassins stumble upon his sister and wife, Queen Helaena, in her room with her twin children.
In the books, Helaena actually offers up her youngest son, Maelor (who isn’t included in House of the Dragon due to how the show has condensed the timeline of Fire and Blood), only for Jaehaerys to be killed by Blood and Cheese anyway—but in the show, Helaena is forced instead to sacrifice him to save her daughter. “We knew it would be horrifying and brutal—we didn’t want it to be gratuitous or over the top,” Condal said of the murder. “The idea of that sequence was to dramatize a heist gone wrong. So we move off the center narrative of Daemon, Rhaenyra, Alicent and Aegon’s world, and suddenly, we’re following these two characters that we’ve just met in an alley in Flea Bottom. Daemon’s given them an assignment to go in and find Aemond Targaryen, and we’re following them, and we’re following them, and we’re not cutting away and we’re not going back to the other narratives—‘oh, God, what’s going to happen?’”
House of the Dragon airs Sundays on HBO and Max.
