  • Burlington to open its new store in Massapequa | Long Island Business News

Burlington Stores is opening a new location within the Philips at Sunrise shopping center in Massapequa next week.

The off-price retailer is downsizing to around 35,000 square feet on one level at 5520 Sunrise Highway, relocating from its previous two-level, 64,588-square-foot store next door. The store opens with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12.

The new Philips at Sunrise location features Burlington’s reimagined store layout, part of Burlington’s broader initiative to refresh its locations, according to a company statement. About half of the brand’s existing locations have already been converted and the remaining stores are expected to transition to the new format by the end of 2026.

“Our goal is to continue to offer area residents low prices on brand name merchandise for the entire family and home,” Michael O’Sullivan, CEO of New Jersey-based Burlington Stores, said in the statement. “We’re continuing to expand our footprint across the country and are excited to be opening a new store in Massapequa. We look forward to giving local customers the chance to discover big savings on a wide range of products.”

To mark the opening of the new store, on Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13, the first 100 customers aged 18 and up will get a $10 Bonus Card to be used toward their purchase. In addition, Burlington will be donating $5,000 to a nearby high-needs school through their partnership with the national nonprofit organization AdoptAClassroom.org. The money will be used to provide students with classroom materials.

Burlington offers branded merchandise at up to 60% off other retailers’ prices, including women’s apparel, menswear, youth apparel, baby, beauty, footwear, accessories, home, toys, gifts and coats, according to the company.

Publicly traded Burlington Stores, Inc., reported fiscal 2024 net sales of $10.6 billion. As of the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2025, the company operated 1,115 stores in 46 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.

  • L.I. man jumps on moving car to stop Facebook Marketplace Rolex thief

L.I. man jumps on moving car to stop Facebook Marketplace Rolex thief

A doorbell cam captured the moment a Massapequa man jumped onto the car of an alleged Facebook marketplace thief trying to steal his $8,000 Rolex.

“I was not going to roll over and let this man take it… without a fight,” seller Steve Mauro told the Associated Press.

Shocking video shows the Long Island merchant jumping onto the hood of a grey Honda compact SUV that’s driving in reverse. After Mauro loses his grip and falls onto Jerusalem Avenue, the vehicle began moving forward. Mauro jumps on it again only to fall off the SUV once more and landing on his lawn.

According to Mauro, 43, he and the apparent buyer, identified as “Jhon” by NBC News, worked out a deal on Facebook Marketplace last week. When Jhon came to purchase the watch late Friday morning, he suggested they sit in his SUV to finalize the agreed upon $8,000 purchase. When Mauro tried to get into the vehicle, he discovered the passenger door was locked and knew something was awry.

A Nassau County police officer happened upon the scene after the suspected thief pulled away with Mauro’s watch.

“I started screaming ‘Go get him, he has my Rolex!’” Mauro said.

Police are searching for the alleged thief’s mini SUV, which appears to have a Connecticut license plate. Mauro suffered minor cuts and bruises.
