    Legendary Spider-Man Artist John Romita Sr. Passes Away

    John Romita Sr. might be best known for being a signature Spider-Man artist and for co-creating one of Marvel’s most enduring heroes, but he was much more than that. He was also a loving father and a husband.

    John Romita Sr. passed away peacefully from natural causes. He was 93 years old. His son and fellow comic book artist John Romita Jr. shared the following statement:

    I say this with a heavy heart. My father passed away peacefully in his sleep. He is a legend in the art world and it would be my honor to follow in his footsteps. Please keep your thoughts and condolences here out of respect for my family. He was the greatest man I ever met.

     

    Romita was the artist who replaced Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko on The Amazing Spider-Man when he left the series in the mid-1960s, and brought renewed life and energy to the series. During his tenure on the book he co-created Mary Jane Watson and helped introduce characters like Kingpin and the Punisher. Later, he also helped co-create Wolverine’s original costume prior to his introduction in the pages of Incredible Hulk #181.

    Born in 1930, Romita was raised in Brooklyn and got his start in comics in the 1950s. When romance books were popular, he became one of the genre’s defining artists; he brought that same flair to his work on Amazing Spider-Man. 

    He joined Marvel in the mid-1960s and had his first breakthrough there illustrating Daredevil. After Spider-Man did a guest-starring spot in the pages of Daredevil #16 and #17, Stan Lee gave him the gig replacing Steve Ditko as the main artist of Spider-Man. Romita remained with the book for years and helped redefine the looks of Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, and the rest of the Spider-Man cast. Later, Romita became Marvel’s art director, and helped mentor younger generations of artists.

    In a post to Instagram, Marvel wrote “John Romita Sr. was a pillar of the Marvel Universe, and his talent defined decades of Marvel’s most well-known stories and characters. He will be missed.

    While it appears to still be several years away, it does look like we will get a fourth Spider-Man film in the MCU from Sony and Marvel and starring Tom Holland. Amy Pascal, one of the producers on most of Marvel’s Spider-Man properties, recently sat down for an interview with Variety. She shared exactly why the film hasn’t been making many new strides in the last little bit.

    “Are we going to make another movie? Of course, we are. We’re in the process, but the writers strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started,” she explained. Pascal also confirmed that a live-action Miles Morales movie and Spider-Woman are in the works.

    Holland separately confirmed early work on Spider-Man 4 in a separate interview, where he explained…

    I can’t talk about that, but I can say that we have been having meetings. We’ve put the meetings on pause in solidarity with the writers. There’s been multiple conversations had, but at this point it’s very, very early stages.

    While some may find the strike annoying since it slows down production on projects like this, it only serves to make the end project better in the end. If writers feel like they’re being taken care of by the studios they’re working with, it inevitably means that they’ll be more confident in their work and more stable.

    If Holland does return for another film, this would mark the first time any Spider-Man film series has made it to a fourth movie. Tobey Maguire’s franchise stalled out after Spider-Man 3; Andrew Garfield only appeared in two Amazing Spider-Mans. There was technically a fourth Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie in the works, but it never made it to theaters.

    Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ Filming Delayed By Writer’s Strike

    The WGA writers’ strike is still going, and at this point, it’s beginning to affect the start of many different Hollywood productions. At Marvel, it already caused a delay in the shooting of Blade, and now a similar pause has been placed on Thunderbolts.

    The writers active in the strike are demanding better pay, better working conditions, and protections from being replaced or having their roles reduced by A.I. writing tools like ChatGPT, among others. As of this writing, their demands haven’t been met and the strike shows no sign of slowing down.

    Thunderbolts is set to star Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Florence Pugh as Black Widow, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. It follows a team of reformed villains who team up to work for the government. The film has been in the works since at least 2022. Eric Pearson was originally brought in to write the initial screenplay, but Lee Sung Jin joined the effort back in March of 2023. But thanks to the writers’ strike, no additional work can currently be done on the script.

    This isn’t just a Marvel problem either. Of course, the strike spans the whole industry, including Marvel’s competitors at DC. In fact, during a commencement speech at a university in Boston, chants broke out as Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav was speaking. A whole room of students joined in, shouting “Pay your writers!”

    It’s unlikely this whole thing will get solved any time soon, but we’d love to be mistaken about that. Thunderbolts is currently scheduled to open in theaters on July 26, 2024.

    It seems that Disney is establishing a new release strategy with Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania. It was first used for Avatar: The Way Of Water, but this seems to be the new normal.

    The former film, Quantumania, unfortunately, has a Rotten Tomatoes score among the lowest of any Marvel film. It sits at a harsh 47 percent, while the audience score is 83 percent. While that likely has nothing to do with any of the release news, it makes sense that throwing it on Disney+ would come as something of an afterthought. That being said, despite the negative critical reception, the film still managed to more than double its budget at the box office.

    Initially, the only news we had on Quantumania’s release was for the physical and digital versions. It had a 60-day window between the theatrical run into the physical release. The digital release came out on April 18, while the Blu-ray and 4K versions of the film are due for release on May 16. The only thing about this release that threw fans off is that there was no news of a Disney+ release date whatsoever. Now why would that be exactly?

    Finally we do now know that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be available to stream on Disney+ starting on March 17. That’s according to a tweet from the official Ant-Man Twitter account.

    The next Marvel Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, will premiere on the streaming service on June 21. That will be the first Disney+ Marvel series of 2023, after the company released three full series and two specials in 2022. Unless the company has a surprisingly busy 2023, this year will mark a huge dropoff for Marvel’s TV output.

    Victoria Alonso had been a producer for and executive at Marvel for a very long time. She joined the studio back in 2006, well before the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe blew up. When she joined, she became the head of visual effects and post-production. She was an executive producer on the first Iron Man which of course, really got the whole thing kicked off. She also served in various producer roles on films like Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. She was an executive producer role on The Avengers, one of the highest-grossing films to date. She did so much great work for Marvel that in 2021, they promoted her to president of physical and postproduction, visual effects and animation production.

    With that kind of tenure, it’s hard to believe that she’d end up getting fired, but that’s what happened back in March 2023. Although no real response was given publicly, The Hollywood Reporter was contacted by a source who said that it was a result of her working outside the studio. She produced recent Oscar nominee Argentina, 1985 for Amazon, which apparently was a big no-no. According to their sources, doing so ended up breaching her contract. There may also have been another reason for the firing though.

    Some reports claim Alonso also clashed with Marvel and Disney over the depictions of certain LGBTQ themes in Marvel movies; like gay pride imagery that was reportedly censored for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s release in Kuwait. Alonso supposedly fought with Marvel and Disney on this issue specifically. Whatever the reason, THR now reports that Alonso and Disney/Marvel have reached a settlement over her dismissal.

    Miraculously, Jeremy Renner is on his feet. In his first live television appearance since the devastating snowplow accident that left him with over 30 broken bones in his body, Renner appeared as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, walking onstage with the help of a cane.

    Renner seemed positively thrilled to be mobile again as he walked over to host Jimmy Kimmel, gave him a hug, danced around a bit, and eventually sat in his chair—but not before doing a few high kicks from his seat. “If there was any question as to who the toughest Avenger was, that’s settled now,” said Kimmel as the audience roared. “Yeah, it’s Scarlett Johansson,” the Marvel star quipped back. 

    Renner than shared the details of his New Year’s Day snow plow accident, when the two-time Oscar nominee was run over be a seven-ton Piston Sno-Bully after he tried to stop the machine from running over his 27-year-old nephew, Alexander Fries. “I got eaten up under the tracks,” said Renner. “That was a very bad way to start the year.” 

    According to Renner, he broke “35 or so” bones in the accident. “We kept discovering them as we were going along, because it went from critical order of, you know, priority of what I was going to die from or not,” he said. “And then, you know, six weeks later, finding another break and another break and another break.” Kimmel quipped that Renner was approaching “Evel Knievel territory” in terms of the amount of injuries he sustained.

    “It’s a giant metal cookie roller, and it just missed every vertebrae, right?” said Renner, explaining his relative good fortune. “It didn’t hit any organs. My brain didn’t swell. My eye did pop out, so that’s weird. But I got very lucky that none of the organs got messed up.” 

    Renner than told stories from his multiple ICU stays, telling Kimmel that he “hated his outfit” while in the hospital. He shared that he didn’t really understand the severity of his injuries until some of his Avengers pals, like Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie, came to visit him. “They were terrible actors,” he said. “They couldn’t hind the fact that I looked awful.” Renner also shouted out Paul Rudd, who stopped by the hospital multiple times to visit him. Not only did Rudd visit Renner, but he also made Renner a fake Cameo, which Renner played on the show. 

    “Hey, Jerry. I hear you’re a little banged up. Got in a fight with a snow blower?” says Rudd in the video, nailing the medium’s impersonal nature. “Anyway, I just wanted to send this video. It’s really from the heart and hope you’re feeling better. Sounds like you are ― apparently you’re a pretty tough guy. Maybe I’ll get to meet you someday…Take is easy for awhile and next time maybe let the snow melt. Feel better, Jerry.”

    In late March, Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, 80, was “laid off” by Disney. The New York Times reported he was given the news over the phone. Perlmutter has been quiet about the situation — until now.

    In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal Wednesday, Perlmutter claimed he wasn’t “laid off” — he has fired due to his aggressive approach to cost-cutting and conflicts with other executives.

    “I have no doubt that my termination was based on fundamental differences in business between my thinking and Disney leadership, because I care about return on investment,” Perlmutter told the outlet.

    “It was merely a convenient excuse to get rid of a longtime executive who dared to challenge the company’s way of doing business,” he added.

    Perlmutter was the CEO and chairman of Marvel Entertainment and remained so when he sold the company to Disney in 2009 for $4 billion. However, during his nearly three decades at Marvel, Perlmutter stirred controversy with a myriad of scandals from supposedly bribing the NYPD to expedite the process of renewing his gun license to being notoriously frugal for the sake of profit.

    Examples of his extreme cost-saving efforts include fishing paperclips out of trash cans for reuse and suggesting potato chips as a food offering at a movie premiere to minimize catering costs.

    Perlmutter’s involvement with Marvel has slowly diminished over the years—he hasn’t been involved with Marvel movies since 2015 and lost oversight over Marvel television shows in 2019. By the time of his layoff, Perlmutter’s role was limited to Marvel comics publishing and game licensing.

    The former chairman’s most recent controversy involved aggressively pushing for his friend, Nelson Peltz, to join the Disney board, which led to a proxy war with Disney chief executive Robert A. Iger claiming he was spending too much money. Peltz ultimately withdrew in February following Iger’s announcement of restructuring and cost-cutting measures. Since the proxy battle, Disney employees are said to have considered Perlmetter’s days at the company were numbered, per The New York Times.

    Perlmetter’s departure comes as part of Disney’s widespread restructuring plan and elimination of nearly 7,000 jobs. Iger informed employees that layoffs would come in three waves: the first round this week, the second in April, and a third before the beginning of summer.

    “The difficult reality of many colleagues and friends leaving Disney is not something we take lightly,” Iger wrote to employees in a letter obtained by Reuters.

    As of Thursday morning, Disney stock was down nearly 25% as compared to last year.

    If anyone is able to have an opinion on superhero fatigue, it’s probably James Gunn. The co-CEO of DC Studios recently spoke with Rolling Stone about the issue. James Gunn has worked closely with both Marvel and DC and has had successful projects with both. That being said, he’s not so entrenched in that world that he can’t see beyond it. Now that James Gunn sits next to Peter Safran at DC, he has to take a leveled approach to this issue if he wants the company to succeed.

    Recently, criticism of superhero movies has become more in vogue. For a while, it seemed like whenever a new Marvel project dropped, it was met with immediate praise, and anyone who picked them apart was considered pretentious. Even Martin Scorsese caught some backlash for criticizing the glut of superhero movies. After Marvel’s discombobulated Phase 4, it’s clear that the old formula isn’t working as well as it used to.

    So is “superhero fatigue” really a thing? Here’s what Gunn had to say:

    I think there is such a thing as superhero fatigue. I think it doesn’t have anything to do with superheroes. It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character. We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they’re these incredible characters that we have in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of nonsense onscreen, it gets really boring. But I get fatigued by most spectacle films, by the grind of not having an emotionally grounded story. It doesn’t have anything to do with whether they’re superhero movies or not. If you don’t have a story at the base of it, just watching things bash each other, no matter how clever those bashing moments are, no matter how clever the designs and the VFX are, it just gets fatiguing, and I think that’s very, very real.

    If you look at which superhero movies have been doing well lately and which ones haven’t, Gunn makes some cogent points. Critics love movies like Joker and Logan, while they aren’t so big on Thor: Love And Thunder. The major difference in these movies is character. Thor: Love And Thunder opts to focus on VFX thanks to the fact that it was largely shot during covid. Joker and Logan are basically character studies.

    Marvel‘s Thunderbolts is nearing the end of pre-production, and with that, come some rewrites. Eric Pearson, the man who penned the Black Widow film, finished the initial draft, but Lee Sung Jin is now on-board to punch the whole thing up a little.

    The movie is set to star a huge ensemble cast of Marvel anti-heroes. While the movie bears some resemblance to the premise of Suicide Squad, it has its own identity because a lot of the “villains” involved are mostly reformed. It’s not like a team full of entirely awful people are all joined up because they’re forced to. Instead, the villains are attempting to make a name for themselves as heroes.

    Lee Sung Jin spoke with Variety, where he shared his involvement.

    I’m rewriting it. It’s the whole squad again. [Director] Jake [Schreier] asked me if I would come on board. I probably should have taken a break, but there’s a lot of themes and exciting things about the movie that I couldn’t help but sign on. It’s truly an honor to be part of a Marvel thing, but it is very different. One, it’s not my project, it’s Jake’s. It’s such a large scope and scale that the type of writing is very different. At the same time, the process feels the same, I’m still talking to Jake every day …  I think once you find the squad of people you love and trust and are so talented, you do everything you can to keep working with them.

    Lee Sung Jin also worked with Steven Yeun and Jake Schreier on the upcoming Netflix series Beef. The trio will be reunited on the set of Thunderbolts. The film is currently scheduled for release on July 26, 2024.

    Superhero films: Is this the end of the road?

    One issue is that the studios are simply running out of beloved characters. It’s true that several actors have played Spider-Man over the last two decades, but Iron Man and Captain America are so closely associated with Downey and Evans, the actors who made the parts their own, that it wouldn’t work to recast them now. So who are we left with? Marvel Studios is reaching the bottom of the barrel with The Marvels and Thunderbolts, while Sony is planning films around such Spider-Man B-listers as Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. Maybe Marvel and DC comics weren’t the infinite resource they once promised to be, after all.

    Still, we shouldn’t get carried away. Last year, there were four superhero films in the worldwide box-office top 10 – five if you include Minions: The Rise of Gru. Spider-Man: No Way Home was the highest grossing film of 2021. And I, for one, am looking forward to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in June. Beyond that, James Gunn, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, has been given the job of relaunching DC’s superheroes with new actors and a new approach. The genre could still make a triumphant comeback, as the characters in its stories so often do. But will it ever again engender the excitement that those first Marvel films did? That really would be a superhuman feat. Believe it or not,  the term “superhero fatigue” was already being bandied around back in 2011. In 2023, cinemagoers everywhere know how it feels.

    Given the backlash to developments in the MCU and the Star Wars franchise, Bob Iger has good news. Both universes are going to be more measured in approach. Iger recently spoke Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, explaining how Disney intends to move forward. It’s a necessary bit of damage control when only a week prior, it was announced that two upcoming Star Wars projects were shelved. Both Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron and a mysterious, untitled film from Kevin Feige have been canceled.

    Iger said in clear terms that this isn’t an outright halt to upcoming projects. It’s just a way to make sure that the franchise is telling the right stories. He said: “We’re still developing Star Wars films, but we’re going to make sure when we make one, it’s the right one. So we’re being very careful there.”

    He also cited the disappointing box office returns of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which seems to have been released right in the middle of a huge market flood for the shared universe. The film was also one of the most expensive ever made, costing a whopping $275–300 million dollars. It did break even, but after that much bankrolling, $393.2 million isn’t the prettiest number.

    Iger also addressed the future approach to the MCU, which is also in the middle of a difficult time.  Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is also suffering some middling reviews and a less-than-stellar box office profit. In regards to this, Iger said: “I think we just have to look at what characters and stories we’re mining. If you look at the trajectory of Marvel in the next five years, there will be a lot of newness. We’re going to turn back to the Avengers franchise with a whole new set of Avengers, for example.”

    When it comes to the superhero genre, there’s certain things that we have come to expect. For starters, we know there will be someone — or something — that puts on a costume and becomes a vigilante. There’s also the understanding that there will be a good deal of action, whether that be in the form of crime-fighting or super-on-super battles. Typically, there’s also a villain, who is at odds with our superhero protagonist and oftentimes the rest of the world. Plot developments happen rather quickly, sometimes at the sake of character development. Audiences cheer, gasp, and laugh at the heroes’ quippy one-liners. This is the experience of watching a superhero movie.

    However, this isn’t always the case. In fact, there are a handful of superhero movies that eschew these stereotypes in favor of something … well, different. Instead of a superhero that defies gravity, these superheroes defy convention. While this concept sounds intriguing — and has indeed led to some great entries in the superhero canon — there are quite a few unconventional superhero movies that completely miss the mark.

    You see, genre cliches exist for a reason. That’s not to say that every single Marvel and DC movie should follow a cookie cutter mold, but incorporating formulaic elements into a movie can go a long way in creating a satisfying experience for moviegoers. It’s like your favorite pizza from your go-to delivery place — it might not always be particularly exciting, but it’s consistent, and it makes you feel good.

    Without further ado, let’s look at ten outside-the-box superhero movies that just flat out didn’t work.

    Steven Yeun is stepping into the MCU, joining the cast of the upcoming Thunderbolts film. There’s no word yet about who exactly he’ll play, although we do know a pretty extensive amount of the actors we can expect to see. The main characters are as follows: Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova/Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Wyatt Russell (U.S. Agent), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine).

    Yeun is perhaps most well-known for his years-long stint on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Unfortunately, a big turning point for the viewership of the show was his character Glenn’s tragic death at the hands of Negan. He also went on to star in a number of acclaimed films like Burning and Minari. At the moment, he’s probably most recognizable as the voice of Mark Grayson from Invincible. He was also recently seen in Jordan Peele’s Nope.

    The director set to helm Thunderbolts, Jake Schreier, has worked on a few films, such as Robot & Frank, as well as Paper Towns. Most of his career has actually been in directing music videos for some pretty high-profile artists, as well as a number of commercials.

    We don’t really know much at all about the actual plot of the upcoming film, but we do know a good bit about the characters, and the nature of the team they’re on. The Thunderbolts are a team made up of reformed (or mostly reformed) supervillains, trying to atone for their past sins. Perhaps Kevin Feige put it best when he said: “It tells you a lot about the team when beloved Winter Soldier is the most stable among them.”

    Thunderbolts is set to start filming in June of 2023, with a release date of July 26,  2024.

    In the Hawkeye Disney+ series, Clint Barton and his family go to see a musical centered around the Avengers. Now tourists will get to experience what it’s like to see a weirdly uncomfortable Broadway show based on a Marvel concept when Rogers: The Musical is turned into a real stage show at  Disneyland’s California Adventure Park later this year.

    In Hawkeye, Rogers: The Musical is just a short gag so Barton can make fun of the inaccuracies, but the production basically mounted a lengthy excerpt from the show, with music by real Broadway composers, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. If you managed to stick around through the credits of the last episode of Hawkeye without hopping into your next binge, you’re treated to a full-length version of the track.

    Shaiman talked about the possibilities you have in an Avengers musical back in 2021, explaining that there are plenty of avenues for the story to take.

    There are a million things that you could create in a Marvel musical, especially with Steve Rogers. The fact that he exists in the ’40s as well would allow us to write a whole lot of different genres, so the whole Marvel story would take place over decades. It would be a thrill to get to do that.

     

    The official Disney Parks Twitter page has released a short teaser, which implies that the musical will be “Coming Soon.” The musical will be hitting Disney California Adventure Park as a one-act play sometime this summer.

    The fact that Peggy Carter is the one looking at the playbill for Rogers: The Musical seems to suggest that she will appear in the show as well. (The Hawkeye version was basically just the one sequence inspired by The Avengers, so they’re going to have to write a bunch more material, even for a one-act show.

    White, a former contestant on “The X Factor” who has voice roles in several animated children’s shows, plays a super-genius that brings back a T. rex ― Devil Dinosaur ― to New York City in the upcoming series.

    The series ― created by actor Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland ― is based on the Marvel Comics characters of the same name and depicts Moon Girl and her prehistoric pal working hand-in-hand to protect New York’s Lower East Side from danger, according to Disney.

    Steve Loter, who directed and produced the hit Disney Channel cartoon “Kim Possible” starting in its second season, joins Fisburne and Sugland as an executive producer on the show.

    White, in an exclusive look at the series, said that Lafayette is “everything she wanted to be” when she was 13 years old.

    “She’s incredible, she’s a superhero, she is a crime fighter, she’s a problem solver,” White said. “I think it’s important for people to see young, strong, Black leading characters. Representation matters and to see someone that looks like you on TV makes the difference, it really does.”

    The series makes its Disney Channel premiere on Friday and its first six episodes will air on Disney+ starting Feb. 15.

    Actor Jeremy Renner says he broke more than 30 bones in a snowplow accident on New Year’s Day.

    Renner, 52, said earlier that he is recovering at home from what Nevada authorities say were serious chest injuries he suffered when he was run over by his 7-ton Pistenbully snow groomer while helping free a relative’s car on a private road near Lake Tahoe.

    Jeremy Renner revealed that he broke more than 30 bones in his body when he was involved in a snow plow accident earlier this month.

    “Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love,” the Marvel star wrote.

    He went on to “thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I” before adding that “these 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens.”

    “Outside my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home,” Renner tweeted on Jan. 16.

    The 52-year-old had been helping a family member whose car became stranded in the Nevada snow on New Year’s Day.

    Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said during a press conference that Renner’s snow removal vehicle was stuck and when the actor tried to remove the “at least 14,330-pound” vehicle, it began to roll.

    At that point, Renner attempted to get into the driver’s seat but was run over by the vehicle instead.
