    Former Marvel Entertainment Chairman Ike Perlmutter Finally Sells Disney Shares

    While it’s a big week for Marvel Studios with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, the behind the scenes corporate shuffle continues as Ike Perlmutter has finally released his grip from any attachments of the company where he was once chairperson.

    The ousted exec followed his partner Nelson Peltz in selling his stakes in the Walt Disney Company, the Wall Street Journal reported. It’s a move that follows the activist investor Peltz and his Trian Partners’ loss of a proxy battle with the Disney Company. Peltz was thought of as Perlmutter’s agenda- pushing conduit to further the conservative and anti-diverse platforms Perlmutter endorsed during his stint as Marvel Entertainment Chairperson before he was booted last year. Perlmutter sold his entire position of 25.6 million shares after the Peltz vote.

    The timing is purposeful, and the 81-year-old may not be done with Disney forever. According to the WSJ, Perlmutter said “he sold because he doesn’t have confidence in Disney’s current management and expects the company’s share price and financial performance to decline further. If Disney’s shares decline to $65 to $75 per share, he plans to buy much of his old stake back.” The paper also noted “he sold his stake between early April and mid-July at an average price of just under $115.”

    Anthony Mackie is adjusting to a new world order. The actor stars as Sam Wilson in Captain America: Brave New World, the Marvel Studios film that is described as a grounded political thriller that hearkens back to the 2014 feature Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

    Harrison Ford makes his Marvel debut as General Ross, the role previously played in the MCU by the late William Hurt, who wants to bring Captain America aboard in an official military position after being elected president. Wilson seemingly works to uncover a nefarious global plot – and eagle-eyed fans will spot the brief glimpse of Ford, as the Red Hulk, head-to-head with Cap.

    Mackie has played Sam Wilson since Winter Soldier, which introduced him as the hero The Falcon, an ally of Chris Evans’ Captain America.

    Mackie went on to appear in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and multiple Avengers films before toplining the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which chronicled Sam’s journey to becoming Captain America.

    The new feature, set for a February 2025 release, hails from The Cloverfield Paradox helmer Julius Onah and has a script from Falcon and the Winter Soldier creator Malcom Spellman and Dalan Musson, who wrote on the show. Moon Knight scribe Matthew Orton is also working on the script, penning pages for reshoots that are adding a new character played by Giancarlo Esposito.

    Fellow MCU newcomer Shira Haas is on the call sheet. Danny Ramirez reprises his Falcon and the Winter Soldier of role as Joaquin Torres, who in the comics becomes The Falcon. And Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson, last seen in 2008’s Incredible Hulk, return to the Marvel fold as well.

    The trailer comes weeks ahead of Marvel Studios’ next movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, as well as ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, where a look at its upcoming slate is expected.

    Marvel Studios recently released new photos from Deadpool & Wolverine and while they’re not groundbreaking, each is our best look yet at characters on opposite sides of the spectrum. On the one side, there’s Cassandra Nova, the evil, likely main villain in the film played by The Crown’s Emma Corrin. Then there’s Peter, one of Wade’s best friends played by Rob Delaney.

    That’s one of the new images above, featuring Wade (Ryan Reynolds) and Peter at work together. It’s from a scene early in the film that screened at CinemaCon 2024 and you can read all about it here. Basically, Wade and Peter are car salesman and while Peter wants Wade to go back to being Deadpool, Wade does not. This is before the birthday party you see in the trailers.

    Then here’s another photo of Peter that looks more like it’s from Superstore than a superhero film but hey, he’s great so we like it.

    Finally, here’s the new image of Cassandra Nova, the character we all expect to be the big bad of the film. Either way, she’s certainly one of the main villains, considering the trailers have shown here with a team of B-level X-Men characters, in a gigantic Ant-Man helmet, and her powers completely baffling Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). But here we get a bit more of her stare, a bit more of her fashion, and a bit more of her lair. She looks very calm, very confident, and very much like Professor X, whom she’s related to in the comics but…is she here?

    Grant Morrison’s Manifesto for the X-Men Is a Fascinating Read

    The X-Men find themselves, perhaps almost always, on the precipice of great change. But right now they really do feel like they’re on the edge of something new again. In the comics, after years rejuvenated by the Krakoan Age, they’re ready to rise from the ashes of tragedy once more. On the big screen, we’re ready to bid farewell to the Fox X-Men era in Deadpool & Wolverine this summer. And on TV, mutantkind rides high with X-Men ‘97‘s re-imagining of an animated classic.

    If anything, there are so many parallels in 2024 to the turn of the 21st century, when Grant Morrison was preparing to take on writing a new generation of X-Men comics with what would eventually become New X-Men in the summer of 2001. Alongside Frank Quitely and other artists, New X-Men boldly redefined what the X-Men’s stories were about for the modern age, emboldened further by the cultural moment the X-Men found themselves in. While the ‘90s were very good to the X-Men in terms of comics sales for the most part—and of course you had ancillary support in wider culture from the explosions of things like X-Men: The Animated Series and the iconic Jim Lee trading cards—mutantkind hit the mainstream even harder with the release of the first X-Men movie in 2000.

    The herald of a new age of superhero moviemaking, X-Men was, in Morrison’s eyes, equally a shot in the arm and warning alike of what had to change in the comics, so they could try and match the audience the movie had enraptured all over again. “Let’s aim for the big audiences. Let’s push books we can be proud of on every level. Books that kids will dig for their sheer gee-whizz, kinetic strut, which college kids will buy for the rebel irony and adults will love for the distraction, just like the movies and the TV shows—just like when Stan [Lee] was doin’ it!!!” Morrison wrote in their pitch bible for New X-Men—which has floated around online for a few years now, but becomes especially potent reading in the crossroads Marvel’s mutants find themselves in in 2024, as a comics reset looms and a future in Marvel’s vaunted cinematic universe looms. “I believe we have a rare opportunity to bust some self-imposed barriers and run screaming through the streets if we just cut loose a little and do work aimed at the mainstream, media-literate audience of kids, teenagers, and adults with disposable income.”

    In this part pitch bible—including some early descriptions of story arcs and characters that would go on to appear in the book, like “Charlie X,” an early identity for Cassandra Nova—part manifesto, Morrison charismatically weaves an argument for a truly 21st century vision of the X-Men, galvanized by the embrace of the franchise’s core concepts and characters in the movie. “To make the X-Men feel fresh once more, we need to take a closer, harsher look at what’s not working in this book and the comics field in general,” they write in part. “The recent X-Men stuff has been written in an old-fashioned, over-dense style for one, and we need to update, streamline, and demystify the storytelling techniques considerably to appeal to modern sensibilities.”

    It’s full of Morrison’s thoughts on what they thought worked and was worth revisiting in X-Menpointing to Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s legendary run on Giant Sized and eventually Uncanny X-Men in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s as a touchstone (“they had the freedom to create new material, reconceptualize the old stuff which still worked and ignoring the outmoded elements which had sapped the original series of its vitality”)—and what had to be left behind in the ‘90s. “In the last decade or so, the tendency at Marvel has been intensely conservative; comics like X-Men have gone from freewheeling, overdriven pop to cautious, dodgy retro,” Morrison argued. “…The comic has turned inwards and gone septic like a toenail… X-Men, for all it was still Marvel’s bestseller, had become a watchword for undiluted geekery before the movie gave us another electroshock jolt.”

    To Morrison, the movie represented so much of what they wanted to bring to New X-Men’s cultural and aesthetic presence. Beyond a feeling of contemporary cool that had defined the Claremont era of the franchise, mutant stories that still reflected these heroes less inwardly as superheroes, but people of the modern world, it was also important to them that X-Men felt less like a superhero comic, and more like a sci-fi epic, something that resonates in New X-Men’s eventual approach to things like the Sentinels or its grasp on the Shi’ar Empire, but also how it divided mutant culture as something distinct from humanity, on both a societal and evolutionary level. Above all though? Morrison adored the ideas behind those movie suits.

    “The movie had it almost right: I think we should go for hardcore bike style exo-rubber uniforms, maybe military pants and wrestling style boots… the look’s brutalist and military and I think the X-Men should reflect that to stay on the cutting edge of cool,” Morrison writes, before adding that not everything the movie did design wise quite worked for them. “I’d like to see some yellow in paneling or detailing on the costumes—if only to avoid the dull black leather look of every film superhero—but it should be pop art dayglo yellow, the kind cyclists and bikers wear to be seen… X-Men is a soap opera about super-people in the same way that Dallas was a soap about oil people. The oil only provided window-dressing and an excuse to look great.”

    In hindsight, Morrison’s bold bet paid off. While not every aspect of their run on New X-Men escaped controversy, the book endures as one of the definitive 21st century X-Men texts, an influence that is still felt in the comics today—and elsewhere, in things like Deadpool & Wolverine’s use of Cassandra Nova, or X-Men ‘97‘s examination of the Genoshan genocide. As the X-Men once again find themselves thrust towards the potential of a mainstream embrace arguably not seen since the early aughts, Morrison’s words resonate—and perhaps make for a fine set of watchwords as we see where Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics alike take mutantkind’s evolution next.

    Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has defined the Fox era of X-Men movies. His storied tenure from the 2000 film all the way up to Logan gave us perhaps one of the most definitive live-action superhero performances of our lifetime. That makes the temptation of his return in Deadpool & Wolverine so potent—but for Marvel Studios’ head honcho, it was almost a curse.

    “I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back’,” Feige recently told Empire about advising Jackman on a potential return to the character he’d stunningly bid farewell to in 2017’s Logan. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo.’” But Feige’s advice actually pushed Jackman to really consider what he’d want out of a return.

    “I was about an hour into the drive,” Jackman said of his headspace after initial pitches. “And that question came into my head: ‘What do I want to do?’ And as soon as I asked the question, I wanted to do Deadpool & Wolverine. I just knew it. I drove for another hour. Couldn’t stop thinking about it. And I got out of the car, called Ryan [Reynolds], and said, ‘Ryan, if you’ll have me, I’m in.’”

    What Jackman wanted to do was not actually return to the same character we saw perish in Logan, but offer a new take on Wolverine that, while drawing on his presence in the history of the Fox X-Men saga and its myriad permutations, also did something new with the character. Even if that ‘new’ was something as simple as finally letting Jackman put on the yellow spandex Logan and Cyclops had joked about way back in the first X-Men film. “We almost [had the suit on] in The Wolverine,” Jackman added. “But from the moment I put it on here, I was like, ‘How did we never do this?’ It looked so right, it felt so right. I was like, ‘That’s him.’ There are different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me.”

    Hopefully we’ll see many more sides of Logan beyond just a costume change when Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26.

    Even before its casting was officially unveiled, Marvel Studios’ upcoming Fantastic Four movie was always poised to be a big deal. The First Family of Marvel Comics hasn’t had a movie since Fant4stic nearly a decade ago (despite Fox’s best attempts), and we’re also coming up on 20 years since the studios’ previous go with the 2000s movies. Those two films have an interesting place in the superhero movie canon, particularly since their Johnny Storm was Chris Evans, who went on to become Captain America for nearly a decade.

    Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Joseph Quinn was asked about if any previous version of Johnny colored his approach to the character. While he was a fan of Evans’ portrayal back in the day, he’s chiefly concerned with “making it your own [version].” There’s “big boots to fill,” certainly, but he says discussions with director Matt Shakman made clear that this movie won’t be in conversation with earlier versions like the MCU Spider-Man movies are with their cinematic past. “There are aspects of it that are very much a singular thing and its own thing. […] I’m really looking forward to establishing this familial dynamic with [my costars] and with Matt Shakman’s guidance.”

    From the stars to Shakman and writers Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer, and Eric Pearson, everyone involved wants to “get [Fantastic Four] right,” continued Quinn. According to him, this new movie will feel different from earlier Marvel movies in ways he clearly can’t explain. But he was hopeful that the end result will be a movie that both does right by the Four and also converts anyone who’s had understandable burnout on superhero movies in the last few years.

    In regards to fatigue, Quinn noted that superhero movies have to put the people before the punches and bombast, nothing it’s why people see these in the first place. That’s something Fantastic Four is aiming to deliver on, and something that sounds like the core ethos of the entire film: “We’re not just in a penny, “ he said, “we’re in for a pound with this one. We’re going to go for it.”

    The Fantastic Four comes to theaters on July 25, 2025, but Quinn can be seen next in A Quiet Place: Day One on June 7.

    We’ve Seen About 10 Minutes of Deadpool & Wolverine

    There’s exactly one Marvel Studios movie coming to theaters this year, but it’s one of the biggest to date. Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled for release on July 26 and it won’t only be the first MCU film for Ryan Reynolds’ wisecracking killer, but also the MCU debut of Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman.

    That alone already has fans excited and the number of people who watched the first trailer proved it again. Continuing the fun, Disney debuted new footage at CinemaCon 2024, and here’s what happened.

    Wade Wilson grabs a staple gun, uses it to put on his wig, and says “Now let’s sell some certified pre-owned vehicles, motherfucker.” Smash cut to Wade in the back seat of a car with a family on a test drive. They ask him some questions but he keeps cursing and mentions he doesn’t have kids because he doesn’t have much vaginal sex. He’s bad at this.

    Peter (Rob Delaney) apparently works there too and they talk in the locker room about how Wade may be a bad salesperson, but he can always go back to being a superhero. Wade explains that he’s done for good. This is the life he wants and if you “aim for the middle, you’ll never miss.” Peter shows him that he keeps an old Deadpool suit in his locker anyway.

    Wade and Peter ride bikes home from work and Wade notices someone taking photos of them. The conversation continues about wanting to be superheroes again and Peter asks Wade if he’s just sad because it’s his birthday. He also mentions a very interesting piercing he’s just gotten.

    Yes, it’s Wade’s birthday. He goes into his apartment and it’s a surprise party. There are all his friends from the first two movies: Negasonic, Colossus, Dopinder, Blind Al, and others. Wade goes around the room and catches up with everyone. One highlight of this is Wade and Al going back and forth with a ton of insults. She asks him if he wants to do some cocaine and he says that’s the one thing Kevin Feige said was off the table. She rattles off a bunch of different fake names and he says Feige knows them all. Finally she says, “Do you want to build a snowman?” To which he says, yes but I can’t.

    Vanessa is also there and they are no longer together. She’s seeing someone from work though, and Wade is happy for her, though he’s not seeing anyone.

    The group sings “Happy Birthday” and then Wade gives a heartfelt speech about how much he loves everyone in this room. He says that despite some tough years, he’s truly happy now because of them. He then goes on to blow out the candles… and the second he does, there’s a knock at the door.

    You’ve seen some of this in the trailer. It’s the TVA. Wade assumes they’re a group of men who are there to have sex with him and he gets very dirty about what he wants them to do with all his holes. They then get fed up, knock him out, and put him through one of those TVA doors.

    In the TVA, Mr. Paradox (Matthew McFayden) tells Wade that a) he soiled himself, and b) what the TVA does. “That’s a shit ton of exposition for a threequel,” Wade says. Mr. Paradox tells him he knows that Wade has been abusive of the timeline previously, with Cable’s time travel device, but that’s not why he’s there.

    Apparently Wade has been chosen for a higher purpose. One that’s even unclear to the TVA. He needs to save the sacred timeline from a grisly fate at some point in the future. The two guys joke that it needs to be “Avenged.” That they’re going to “Marvel” at how “Cinematic” is. Wade says he wants it all, cameos, variants, the works.

    They turn to the screen and on it is Steve Rogers as Captain America. Wade knows him and salutes the screen. “You’re no longer lost,” Mr. Paradox says, “You can now be a hero.” At this point, Wade notices a screen where Thor is holding a dying Deadpool and crying. “Why is Thor crying?” he asks. Wade isn’t supposed to see that though; that’s something that happens in the distant future.

    Wade is all in and says he will return and help. He then turns to the camera, runs toward it, grabs it, shakes it and says “Suck it Fox! I’m going to Disneyland!” He also fellates the boom microphone a bit.

    “Oh, there’s one more thing I need,” Wade says. It’s a costume. A TVA tailor makes him a brand new upgraded Deadpool costume, which comes together in a quick series of fast edits… which include more than a few of the tailor grabbing Wade’s crotch.

    Wade loves the new costume, even if he has to tell them the tailor is a predator. He also mentions that his samurai swords are made out of adamantium. He jokes around that one of the TVA employees is eyeing him up and his underwear is getting tighter. The employee picks up the phone to call HR.

    That leads into a montage of action scenes largely from the first trailer. Dog Pool running in slow motion. Lots of shooting. Wade in the back seat of a bloody car. And then, finally, we see him and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine sitting together in a car.

    “What’s with the suit?” Wade asks. “Do the X-Men make you wear it?” He comments he looks like he fights crime for the Los Angeles Rams, but Wolverine isn’t having it. “I’m just trying to bond a bit,” he says.

    Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. It opens July 26.

    So-called activist investor Nelson Peltz, who’s aiming to win two Disney board seats, has stirred up some controversy by calling out Disney’s recent era of “woke” strategy through diversifying its slate of films at Marvel Studios.

    The 81-year-old businessman, whose experience is with food companies including Wendy’s and H.J. Heinz as well as having once supported the DeSantis presidential campaign, had a lot to say about The Marvels and Black Panther in an interview with the Financial Times. “Why do I have to have a Marvel [movie] that’s all women?” Peltz asked the publication. “Not that I have anything against women, but why do I have to do that? Why can’t I have Marvels that are both? Why do I need an all-Black cast?” Side note: Peltz happens to be the father of Nicola Peltz, who played Katara in 2010’s infamously very white Last Airbender adaptation.

    He continued, “People go to watch a movie or a show to be entertained. They don’t go to get a message.” Since he also claimed that he doesn’t have experience in media, it’s interesting to note that Peltz’s Trian Partners is pushing for this vote as part of Ike Perlmutter’s hopes for retaliation against Disney CEO Bob Iger, who terminated him from Marvel Entertainment last year. Variety reported that, “Trian controls roughly $3.5 billion worth of Disney stock, 79% of which is owned by Perlmutter.” This goes back to Perlmutter’s feud with Kevin Feige, who pushed for Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Perlmutter fought against diversity in Marvel’s slate until Iger stepped in to force his hand and allow the films to be made.

    Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, starring the late Chadwick Boseman, was a hit with $1.35 billion at the worldwide box office; it kicked off the Academy Award-winning franchise and brought more inclusivity to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Proving Perlmutter wrong publicly while revealing the lengths the forner Marvel exec went to in order to stop diverse superhero toys, merch, and movies being made really propelled Feige into the public’s good graces. Recent misses for the studio including The Marvels have caused some Marvel watchers to wonder if Feige’s position should be called into question. When asked by the Financial Times if it should, Peltz responded, “I’m not ready to say that, but I question his record.”

    Disney board member George Lucas recently stood up against Peltz by releasing a statement (reprinted in Variety and elsewhere) to support Bob Iger in rejecting his bid. “Creating magic is not for amateurs,” Lucas said in a shot right at Peltz, who also admitted to the Financial Times he’s been a bit of a bully. (“What sense is being a billionaire if you’re not a bully?” Peltz has been quoted as saying.) Which is such a strange stance to bring into Disney, standing directly against all it represents.

    Lucas continued, “When I sold Lucasfilm just over a decade ago, I was delighted to become a Disney shareholder because of my longtime admiration for its iconic brand and Bob Iger’s leadership.” He added, “When Bob recently returned to the company during a difficult time, I was relieved. No one knows Disney better. I remain a significant shareholder because I have full faith and confidence in the power of Disney and Bob’s track record of driving long-term value. I have voted all of my shares for Disney’s 12 directors and urge other shareholders to do the same.”

    Peltz aims to add more board seats for his hedge fund firm through his Disney bid and support the agenda that Ike Perlmutter, his silent third party partner, has advocated for during his Disney tenure. The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that Perlmutter had this up his sleeve as soon as he was terminated, as he immediately pledged his stakes in Disney to Peltz. Before Iger came back Peltz had attempted a proxy battle with the company as a result of its losses, but was held off by his return. With this seat bid he hopes for round two in having more direct influence on the company board.

    For a long time, Marvel fans could only watch Marvel’s streaming shows if they had a Disney+ subscription. That’s changing, though, with two more shows getting Blu-ray releases though Steelbook.

    Today, Marvel Studios announced in an Instagram story that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Moon Knight are both coming out on Blu-ray as Steelbook collectors’ editions. Both sets will be released on April 30. Marvel’s website lists the various bonus features on the discs, including behind the scenes featurettes, gag reels, and deleted scenes. Past Marvel shows on Blu-ray have retailed for $49.99.

    The Falcon and the Winter Soldier focuses on Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in the wake of Avengers: Endgame. After Steve Rogers lives out his life in the past and passes his shield onto Sam, Sam decides to give it to the U.S. government instead of taking on the mantle of Captain America himself. However, when the government in turn gives it to a “new” Captain America—and a terrorist group called the Flag Smashers takes matters into their own hands during the mass displacement following the Blip—Sam and Bucky have to work together to carry on Steve’s legacy.

    Moon Knight also takes place shortly after the Blip, but it takes a much more fantastical tone than The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) is a mild-mannered museum worker in London who’s fascinated with Egyptian mythology. Little does Steven know that he’s also Marc Spector, an American who’s the avatar of the Egyptian god Khonshu (Karim El Hakim and F. Murray Abraham). Together, Steven and Marc fight against Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), a religious zealot who seeks to awaken the goddess of judgment, Ammit (Sofia Danu and Saba Mubarak).

    Marvel’s new Blu-ray releases join two fan favorite series

    Previously, Marvel released two of its other early Disney+ shows as Steelbook Blu-ray sets: WandaVision and Loki. Both are available at Best Buy and other retailers. The Loki set includes an eagerly awaited scene in which Loki (Tom Hiddleston) turns his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth) into a frog, while the WandaVision set includes a first look at the upcoming series Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

    Kumail Nanjiani is recalling the release of Marvel‘s Eternals and revealing he had to go to counseling following the negative reviews the Chloé Zhao film received.

    “I had the best time doing that movie, and I realized this is how work should feel like,” Nanjiani said during an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. “However, when that movie came out and the reviews weren’t good, that was very, very tough for me and I realized that too much of how I’m evaluating what I want to do is based on the result of what other people think of it.”

    Eternals was released in 2021, and it starred Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, among others. The film currently has a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

    “It was really, really hard because Marvel thought that movie was going to be really, really well reviewed, and so they lifted the embargo really early and they also put it in some fancy movie festivals and they sent us on a big global tour promoting the movie right as the embargo lifted,” he added.

    “So we had to travel the world while they thought we’d be going on a wave of raves and it wasn’t true. The reviews were really bad,” Nanjiani said.

    The actor said that he read many reviews, and it ended up affecting his mental health, adding, “I think there was some weird soup in the atmosphere for why that movie got slammed so much, and I think not much of it has to do with the actual quality of the movie. It was really hard, and that was when I thought it was unfair to me and unfair to [my wife] Emily, and I can’t approach my work this way anymore. Some s**t has to change, so I started counseling. I still talk to my therapist about that.”

    Marvel's What If Season 3 Release Window, Cast, Plot, and More

    Marvel’s What If…? is wrapping up its second season on Disney+, and Marvel Animation has good news for fans of its animated anthology series: season 3 is already in the works.

    According to Discussing Film, What If…? season 3 was announced in July 2022, during San Diego Comic Con. At a screening of two episodes of What If…? season 2 on December 11, 2023, the show’s creators confirmed that season 3 is currently in development.

    So what do we know about What If…? season 3? Currently, almost nothing! But there are a few tidbits of information floating around—and plenty to speculate about.

    What If…? season 3 release window

    When will What If…? season 3 come out? It’s hard to say right now, especially since Marvel has begun spacing out its Disney+ content, leading to numerous delays. However, executive producer Brad Winderbaum said at Comic-Con 2022 that the studio’s “intention is to make [What If…?] an annual release.” That means that What If…? season 3 could potentially hit Disney+ around the holiday season in 2024.

    Who could potentially be in What If…? season 3?

    Right now, without knowing which characters and storylines will be adapted for the episodes in season 3, we can only guess. It’s reasonable to suspect, though, that as Marvel moves further into phases 5 and 6, and the Infinity Saga recedes further into the past, that its newer characters will start to take center stage in What If…? That could mean less of Iron Man and Hawkeye, and more of newer characters like Shang-Chi and She-Hulk.

    Or Marvel could use What If…? as a nostalgia factory. Who knows? I wouldn’t necessarily complain!

    Either way, Marvel has a pretty good track record so far of getting its A-list stars to voice their characters in the anthology series. That means that whichever characters pop up, we may be treated to the talents of their live-action actors. Plus, Jeffrey Wright will almost certainly return as the show’s transdimensional guide, Uatu the Watcher.

    What If…? season 3 plot

    What will What If…? season 3 be about? Unless What If…? takes a radical departure in its next season, we can expect more of the freewheeling fun we experienced in seasons 1 and 2. What If…?‘s formula offers endless possibilities, as familiar characters are placed in new and interesting situations and Uatu guides us through all the possibilities of Marvel’s multiverse.

    Jonathan Majors is out at Marvel Studios in a stunning career blow for the once-rising actor.

    On Dec. 18, a Manhattan jury found Majors guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and guilty of harassment following a two-week trial that stemmed from a March incident between the actor and his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari.

    Before his March arrest, Majors was positioned as the key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the Disney-owned studio building its entire current story arc around Majors’ Kang the Conqueror. The time-traveling villain factored into this year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as well as both seasons of Loki, and he was going to lead Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, slated for May 1, 2026. The feature is still in the script phase and had not begun filming. No director is currently attached.

    Marvel has two courses it could take now. It could recast the part, although it is not clear how many actors would be attracted to a role from which one actor was so publicly fired. The other course is to redevelop its plans and refocus on a brand new villain. While Marvel sources are mum, there is indication that the studio has already been doing just that. In November, Marvel hired Loki creator Michael Waldron to work on a new draft of what was once called Kang Dynasty, but is now being referred to as Avengers 5, according to sources.

    The studio has had months to plan for such an eventuality, and it’s possible that Waldon was part of that course correction.

    Marvel has recast in the past, but over creative and financial disputes, not for legal troubles. Terrence Howard starred in the first Iron Man as James Rhodes, while Edward Norton headlined The Incredible Hulk, both released in 2008. Howard declined to return for the 2010 Iron Man sequel, citing pay reasons, and Don Cheadle stepped into the role. Norton, meanwhile, clashed creatively with Marvel on Incredible Hulk, and Mark Ruffalo stepped into the role for The Avengers (2012). And more recently, the late William Hurt was replaced by Harrison Ford in the upcoming Captain America: New World Order as Thunderbolt Ross.

    Majors was once considered one of the top rising actors in Hollywood. In addition to Quantumania, he starred in Creed III in 2023. He first rose to prominence with The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and went on to star in Devotion, Lovecraft Country, The Harder They Fall and Da 5 Bloods. The body-building drama Magazine Dreams bowed at Sundance in January 2023, though its fate remains in limbo as distributor Searchlight removed it from the calendar amid the actor’s legal troubles.

    Majors was arrested on March 25, after he called 911 saying he found his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari, in their New York apartment unconscious. Police said they found injuries on Jabbari, including a bruised and fractured finger and a cut behind an ear. Majors pled not guilty to all charges.

    In the wake of his legal troubles, PR firm The Lede Company and his managers at Entertainment 360 dropped the actor. He is still repped by WME, but that could change in light of the verdict.

    A “Black Panther” animated series is in the works at Marvel Studios.

    Titled “Eyes of Wakanda,” the new project was teased on Monday night by Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum at an event to promote the second season of the studio’s inaugural animated series, “What If…?”.

    “Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story,” reads the official logline, per Marvel. The studio has been developing multiple series set in Wakanda with “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler, and a source tells Variety Coogler will also be involved in the forthcoming animated project. Coogler is currently under a multi-year overall TV deal with the Walt Disney Company through his Proximity Media banner.

    Along with “Eyes of Wakanda,” the sizzle reel at the “What If…?” event highlighted two other previously announced animated series: “X-Men ’97,” expected to debut in 2024, and “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” previously titled “Spider-Man: Freshman Year.” There was no mention of “Marvel Zombies,” the third animation title previously announced by Marvel’s in-house animation department.

    As of May, no live-action projects set in Wakanda have been ordered to series, and the studio overall has dialed back its slate amid criticism — including from Disney CEO Bob Iger — that Marvel had oversaturated the market. The “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” spin-off series “Ironheart,” starring Dominique Thorne, Anthony Ramos and Alden Ehrenreich, was pushed from its fall 2023 release date; Marvel has not yet announced when it will premiere. The studio has a single feature film — “Deadpool 3” — set for release in 2024, along with the streaming series “Echo” in January and “Agatha” in the fall.

    Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D’Onofrio has said that he believes the upcoming Disney+ show will fall under the Marvel Spotlight Banner.

    While on BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, the actor was asked if he thought the new Daredevil series would be part of the Marvel Spotlight Banner. The purpose of the banner, which will include the upcoming Echo series, is to highlight more grounded stories that are focused on characters instead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s overall continuity.

    “For sure,” D’Onofrio stated. “That’s my opinion, I imagine it would be. Nobody has said, ‘Hey, did you know this? This is happening’ — nobody said that. But it is of the same tone and feel [as Echo]. The attention that the big bosses are giving to it is extraordinary and Charlie [Cox] and I are just amazed at how much they care about this series. I can’t imagine it being treated any less.”

    In October, it was reported that Daredevil: Born Again was undergoing a “significant creative reboot” after the production break that came from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were quietly taken off the project alongside the series’ directors, while certain scenes and episodes that were already finished will be retained with further serialized elements added.

    When did Daredevil and Kingpin debut in the MCU?

    Both Daredevil and Kingpin made their MCU debuts in 2021. Kingpin guest-starred in the Disney+ Hawkeye series, and Matt Murdock briefly appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Charlie Cox also guest-starred in two episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where he showed off a lighter side of the hero.

    SPOILER ALERT: This story includes discussion of major plot developments on “Loki,” which is currently streaming on Disney+.

    Roughly 20 minutes after the news broke that the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike had concluded, the first email I received from an actor’s publicist was for Ke Huy Quan. That’s how enthusiastic the recent Oscar-winning star of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was to talk about his role on “Loki,” the Marvel Studios series for Disney+ that just wrapped up its second season. When he signs on to our Zoom chat for the interview, his face is beaming. 

    “I’ve waited a long time to talk about ‘Loki,’” he says. “Like, talking to you right now gives me a lot of joy.”

    Quan plays Ouroboros, or “OB,” the head (and seemingly the sole employee) of the Repairs and Advancement Department of the Time Variance Authority — basically, the one person responsible for keeping the TVA’s machinery running. Quan is the most high profile new addition to the cast, which includes Tom Hiddleston in the title role and Owen Wilson as the TVA operative Mobius, and he was anxious at first about joining such a well-regarded show for its second season.

    “They already have this camaraderie going on, this beautiful relationship,” he says. “So coming in, I was a bit intimidated. I didn’t know how I would fit in. From the get go, I felt this warmth, this beautiful acceptance with everybody’s wide open arms. They brought me in, and I felt right at home. It was wonderful.”

    Quan rarely stops smiling as he talks about how his performances as a child in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and 1985’s “The Goonies” informed his experience making “Loki,” how Marvel Studios’ films took him back into his childhood — and how Hiddleston guided him through mastering O.B.’s dense technical dialogue.

    How has it been for you to not be able to talk about this performance?

    When I got the role of Ouroboros, we were in London for four months shooting and I couldn’t tell anybody. I couldn’t tell my family. The only people who knew was my wife, my entertainment attorney — which is my “Goonies” brother — and my agents. We had the most amazing time, and I was so proud of it. I would fantasize about being all over the place with Tom and Owen and my “Loki” family to talk about it.

    And then all of a sudden, Hollywood shuts down. It reminded me of when I got the movie of a lifetime, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” I finished that with one day to go, and the entire world shuts down [in the pandemic]. But of course, the strike was very important for our union. I’m very proud of the work that they did. And I’m also super happy now that it’s over and “Loki” gets to have the celebration it deserves.

    I want to go way back to “X-Men,” because you worked on the stunt team on that movie after you’d basically stopped acting, and that’s when you first met Kevin Feige.

    Ah! He was an associate producer at that time, and I was just an assistant action choreographer. It was right after I graduated from USC Film School. I was really nervous, because I didn’t know if I would have a career behind the camera and I was really grateful when I got the call from Corey Yuen, who was the action director on “X-Men.” When I walked on set, I was just blown away. I met this young man and he had this vast knowledge of this universe, and he was so willing and so passionate to talk to me about it. Because I didn’t know a lot about Marvel. I loved Kevin Feige right away and, of course, many years later, when he became this huge producer at Marvel, I always wanted to work with him, but I didn’t know in what capacity. We would see each other once in a long while. Little did I know that 23 years later, we get to work together. I’m just so thrilled.

    Did you develop a better sense of Marvel after you worked on “X-Men”?

    Well, I was very focused on being on being the action choreographer. When that movie was over, I went on and did other stuff. It was not until Kevin Feige made the first movie, “Iron Man,” and I went to see it and I was just blown away by how entertaining, how fun, it was. I watched every single [Marvel Studios] movie that came out thereafter and became a huge fan of this universe. I know a little bit about this universe, but I can’t say I’m as knowledgeable as Kevin. But I really enjoy these movies. My family are huge fans.

    What made you excited to watch them?

    I grew up in an era where you go into movies like “Back to the Future,” “Indiana Jones” — all those fun summer blockbuster movies, those big event movies. Those were my happy memories. Going to watch a Marvel movie reminded me of my childhood. Those movies are meant to be shared with a mass audience, that communal experience in a movie theater with 1,000 people. I just love them.

    “Loki” head writer Eric Martin told me that he based Ouroboros on family members of his who were tinkerers. How did you develop a character for yourself? What did you draw off to bring that character to life?

    When I first read the script, I instantly fell in love with Ouroboros. You can see who this character is right away — his quirkiness, his humor, his passion for his job jumps right out of the page. In the process of trying to fine tune how I want to play him, something dawned on me. I realized that this character is familiar to me. I think I know who he is. I have to go back 35 years ago, when I play Data on “The Goonies.” 

    So many fans have come up to me, and the most asked question was, “Will there be a ‘Goonies 2’? And what is Data doing as an adult?” This character of Ouroboros is kind of my answer to that. I view him as a variant of Data. What’s really interesting is, on my first day, I’m in full hair and makeup and costume. I’m walking to the Ouroboros set. They built this amazing set on the second biggest stage at Pinewood Studios. I look up and I see the name of the stage is “Roger Moore.” Now as we all know, Data loves James Bond. The character 007 inspires him tremendously. So I feel like there’s some cosmic connections to this character and Data. Playing him was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had. 

    OB has a lot of technical dialogue. How did you master that?

    It was hard! Adam, I’m telling you, it was not easy! In the beginning, I kept messing up my lines. My character is responsible for a lot of the exposition. So it would just be pages and pages of dialogue. I didn’t understand, what is the “temporal loom”? What is the “throughput multiplier”? I could barely say it in the beginning. I had to ask [executive producer] Kevin Wright: “You have to show me what it is.” I have to visualize it in my head in order for me to say this dialogue. So he showed me visuals. There was a miniature model of the temporal loom. 

    I even asked Tom Hiddleston. In Episode 6, he was just spitting out that dialogue at 100 miles per hour. I was blown away by his performance. I said, “Tom, how do you do that?” It comes so naturally for him. He talked about his method. He showed me how to do it. And of course, you know, I practiced it, and it worked. 

    What did he teach you?

    Well, I mean, there’s no secret to it. It’s really looking at the dialogue and reading it very, very slowly the first few times, and then as you become more comfortable with it, then you start picking it up. It’s just that repetition, but start very slow. I do the opposite. I jump right in and I’ll practice it as if I will be saying it in camera. But his process is just start very slow and familiarize yourself with every single word. That’s the method that I’ve been using ever since.

    After having seen every movie in the MCU, what was the experience of stepping inside one of their projects?

    One thing that really surprised me was, when I heard people talk about these movies, they always said, you know, “There’s always a lot of visual effects, a lot of blue screens.” On “Loki,” it was a practical set. Everything was built. The only blue screen that we had was outside the window in the temporal loom chamber. Everything inside was practically built. We could touch it, we could see it, we could step on it. And it was incredible. It also brought me back to the days when we shot “Goonies” and “Indiana Jones.” All those were practical sets as well.

    The season ends with Loki becoming the god of stories and in effect sacrificing himself to bring order to the multiverse. What did it feel like to be on the inside of that revelation?

    We didn’t get access to Episode 6 until later on. When I read it, I was blown away, because it was not the direction I was expecting. I got so emotional because the character arc of Loki is one of the most beautiful arcs I’ve seen in cinema history. He started 14 years ago as a selfish villain, and to end at the Episode 6 of “Loki” Season 2, how he made this tremendous sacrifice without recognition. Nobody knows he did this, except the team. Nobody on the sacred timeline knows that he’s given up his freedom, he’s given up all these wants and needs, to be on that throne and hold everything together. That is just beautiful. I just love it. I just think it’s so poetic and so beautiful. It’s a perfect ending to a perfect character.

    How much of an indication has Marvel given you about OB’s future in the MCU?

    I haven’t had any conversations. I love OB. I love playing him. It makes me so happy that the audience is responding to this character. When I first got the call from Kevin Feige and he asked me to come join the MCU family, I asked him, “Is this a one-time thing? Or are we going to be able to see more of him?” Because I loved him on the pages. And he says, “Ke, we always give what the fans want.”

    So I hope the fans like OB enough and I want to see him in more MCU movies and television shows. We will find out, but no, I haven’t had any discussions with anybody yet.

    The Marvels‘ disappointing start at the North American box office over the weekend — $47 million, a record low for a Marvel Studios release — is adding to analysts’ concerns that superhero fatigue is an urgent and growing problem for the major studios. But in China, filmgoers have been snubbing America’s caped crusaders for far longer — and The Marvels only marks a fresh low.

    The Marvels opened to just $11.5 million in China, losing the three-day weekend to holdover local crime thriller Who’s the Suspect, which earned $11.7 million. Including Thursday night previews, The Marvels‘ four-day total creeps up to $11.8 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.

    MCU releases have been underperforming in China since the pandemic, but The Marvels‘ face plant is particularly striking. Back in 2019, Brie Larson’s franchise starter Captain Marvel opened to $89.3 million on its way to a strong $154 million China total. According to current projections, The Marvels will be lucky to top $20 million.

    Marvel’s other 2023 releases have also failed to find much traction with mainland Chinese moviegoers. Even James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — which was a success in North America with a $359 million haul — earned just $27.8 million in China, compared to $48.5 million for Guardians 2 (2017) and $86 million for Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brought in $39.4 million in China this February, a 67 percent drop from Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s $121 million total in 2018. MCU releases from 2020 to 2022 were significantly affected by pandemic-related delays and cinema closures in China, but social scores on the country’s top ticketing apps throughout this period also began to decline.

    U.S. studio franchises across the board have been on the wane in China, but other action genres have held up somewhat better than superhero films. Universal’s Fast X holds the crown for Hollywood’s biggest film of 2023 in the country with a $51.1 million opening and $140 million total. And Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened to $40 million and topped out at $92 million. Early installments in both film series earned vastly more in China, though, indicating broad franchise erosion for the studios.

    As elsewhere, the standouts in the China market this year have been the Barbenheimer originals. Oppenheimer earned $62 million, Christopher Nolan’s second-best China performance to date behind Interstellar ($122 million) — and a phenomenal showing for a lengthy English-language historical drama in the country. Warner Bros.’ Barbie, meanwhile, opened soft with $8.1 million amid a widespread lack of awareness in the market, but word of mouth among cosmopolitan Chinese women lifted it to a healthy $35.2 million total — despite the fact that Barbie dolls have almost no history or nostalgia in the country.

    Who’s The Suspect (aka Last Suspect), China’s weekend winner, opened a week ago with $23.4 million, including previews. The film is directed by Zhang Mo, daughter of Chinese film legend Zhang Yimou. Produced by Beijing Dino Films, the thriller stars actress Zhang Xiaofei as a lawyer who is forced to defend a death-row suspect after her own daughter is kidnapped. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects the film to finish its run with about $71 million (RMB 515 million).

    The next U.S. film to hit Chinese screens will be Lionsgate’s prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which opens day-and-date with North America on Friday.

    After months of speculation amid the work stoppage caused by the recently ended SAG-AFTRA strike, “Deadpool 3” is being delayed by the Walt Disney Company. The comic book threequel has vacated its May 3, 2024 release date and is now set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.

    It’s one of several moves that Disney announced on Thursday evening, as the studio rejiggers its theatrical release slate. “Deadpool 3” is now claiming the slot previously occupied by “Captain America: Brave New World,” which has been pushed to Feb. 14, 2025. Additionally, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” has moved from Dec. 20, 2024 to July 25, 2025 and its upcoming “Blade” reboot has shifted from Feb. 15, 2025 to Nov. 7, 2025.

    Beyond Marvel, Disney has also delayed its upcoming prequel to its 2019 CGI remake of “The Lion King.” “Mufasa: The Lion King,” directed by Barry Jenkins, has moved from a July 5, 2024 date to Dec. 20, 2024. Additionally, the studio has vacated two other dates — July 25, 2025 and Nov. 7, 2025 — which it had planted flags on for unspecified features.

    When the SAG-AFTRA strike first began in July, “Deadpool 3” was forced to suspend production. Now after nearly four months in limbo, Marvel Studios is planning to kick back into high gear, with filming set to get up and running before Thanksgiving break. However, chatter of a potential delay had been in the air for weeks as the actors strike stretched into the fall. Now, “Deadpool 3” represents the only Marvel Studios film scheduled to hit theaters in 2024 — a big swerve as the banner regularly unleashes three or four features a year.

    While “Deadpool 3” still has a fair amount of production to complete, it’s notable that “Captain America: Brave New World,” which will see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson take on the Marvel mantle, has already completed principal photography. Nonetheless, it is now facing a seven-month delay. Meanwhile, “Thunderbolts” and “Blade” have yet to mount production at all.

    The decision for “Deadpool” to leave its May release date now leaves a sizable crater in next year’s summer blockbuster line-up. The first weekend of May is prime real estate for studios, usually representing a big kick-off for the season. Marvel has laid claim to the frame in recent years with titles like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

    Curiously, Disney still has another tentpole set for May, with 20th Century Studios’ “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” slated for the 24th of the month, opening against Warner Bros.’ “Mad Max” spin-off “Furiosa.” But with “Kingdom” still sticking to its original date as opposed to moving up three weeks, it seems likely that some other studio will swoop in to claim the first days of May.

    As it stands, the first high-profile film of the season is now set to be Paramount’s “IF,” a fantasy film directed by John Krasinski and, coincidentally, also starring Ryan Reynolds.

    For those who are not attending tonight’s The Marvels premiere in Las Vegas, Goose — the cat-like alien creature that appeared in Captain Marvel and returns in The Marvels — will tower over the city’s skyline on the exterior of the recently-opened Sphere.

    The promo is a collaboration between software developer Autodesk and Marvel, and begins with Goose in its cat form, before transforming with her detailed tentacles on full display. It comes ahead of The Marvels‘s Nov. 10 release in theaters.

    Sphere, Las Vegas’ newest entertainment venue, boasts an exterior coated with a record 580,000-square-foot 16K LED display, while its interior features a record 160,000 square-foot 16K LED display.

    The Autodesk/Marvel promo was created by visual effects studio The Mill, using Autodesk Maya 3D software (which is widely used by VFX companies) for designing, lighting, rigging and animating the Goose character. It was rendered with Autodesk’s Arnold software.

    “Collaborating with Autodesk on The Marvels activation has been an amazing experience,” says Jocelyn Birsch, director of experience at The Mill, which also created the visual collage, using sampled film clips of Elvis Presley, that plays during U2’s current residency at Sphere.

    Since opening in late September, Sphere debuted two shows: U2 residency U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere and Darren Aronofsky-helmed movie Postcard from Earth.

    The new promo is scheduled to run through Nov. 13, for the kickoff of Autodesk University, the software developer’s annual design and content creation customer confab, which will be held in Las Vegas.
