    Martha Stewartis no stranger to posing for a camera, having started her career as a model, and her new campaign proves she hasn’t lost her touch.

    The 84-year-old lifestyle guru is the new face of American Eagle’s Give Great Jeans Campaign holiday campaign, and she looked incredible rocking an all-denim outfit in a promotional video and photos for the brand.

    Martha displayed her slender legs in a pair of American Eagle’s stretch skinny jeans and a cropped jacket as she highlighted denim as a universal gift, perfect for the holidays.

    In the video, Martha stands on a set wrapped entirely in denim while she also uses the fabric to wrap a present. “This holiday season, we’re settling for nothing less than a perfect fit,” she says in the clip.

    Sharing the video on Instagram, Martha’s fans all agreed that her presence in the campaign is “iconic.” One commented: “The icon of all icons!!!” A second said: “Ok. So this is iconic.”

    A third added: “A holiday icon,” while others dubbed American Eagle’s campaign as “the best jeans ad ever.”

    Speaking about her involvement in the campaign, Martha told People: “I have spent decades helping people create beautiful holidays – from setting the perfect table to trimming the tree to finding that last-minute gift that saves the day.

    “So when American Eagle approached me about being part of their holiday gifting campaign, I was immediately intrigued.”

    She continued: “The concept of an all-denim world was playful, smart and whimsical: an entire gift-wrapping workshop constructed from denim, complete with bows, garlands and wrapping paper.”

    Sharing her thoughts on denim being “a universal gift that works for everyone on your list,” Martha added: “Jeans have always been a staple in my wardrobe, and giving a great pair of AE jeans is always a nice gift to give.

    “I’m constantly moving between decorating, cooking, and, most importantly, wrapping gifts, and I need to make sure I have an outfit that is comfortable and stylish.

    “The beauty of AE jeans is their versatility and ability to move with you throughout the day. They are flattering, sleek and soft enough to make wrapping gifts or hosting a dinner in them effortless.”

    Giving denim her seal of approval for the holiday season, Martha explained: “Let the denim do the heavy lifting. It’s one of those remarkable fabrics that goes from casual to quite sophisticated with just a few thoughtful touches.

    “A well-fitted pair of jeans forms the foundation of a look that can go from casual to refined in seconds.”

    Martha is particular about the jeans she wears and admitted that “the fit is the most important.”

    “You can have the most beautiful fabric and impeccable construction, but if the fit isn’t right, I’ll never wear them,” she said.

    From recipes to etiquette, Martha Stewart’s brilliance knows no bounds — and that goes for her decor, too. Every little detail in Martha’s kitchen is carefully crafted, and of course that includes the color of her kitchen cabinets (which is nothing short of stunning). 

    At first glance, you might take note of how fresh, bright, and modern the warm gray hue makes her kitchen feel. But in reality, her kitchen hasn’t been painted or renovated in quite some time — 20 years, to be exact. So what is this magical mystery color that has kept her decades-old kitchen looking brand-new and totally timeless? 

    Naturally, Martha didn’t just find a paint shade she liked for her cabinets — she took it one step further and created her own. It’s called Bedford Gray, and it’s Martha’s self-proclaimed signature color. In 2013 she wrote on her personal blog about her beloved Bedford Gray, which was sold through her Martha Stewart Living paint collection at The Home Depot. 

    “As you may know from reading this blog, there is a definite gray theme here at the farm,” Martha wrote. “I chose to paint all of the buildings the same pleasing color that I call Bedford Gray. Lay down a thick blanket of fog and the entire farm becomes Bedford Gray.”

    But if you want to steal this gorgeous warm neutral hue for your own space, it’s not quite as simple as heading to your local hardware store. The color, along with the rest of the collection, was discontinued some years ago — but not all hope is lost.     Martha Stewart has seen her new Netflix documentary, “Martha,” and she’s not entirely a fan of the finished product. Directed by R.J. Cutler, whose recent biographical docs include “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry” and “Elton John: Never Too Late,” the Stewart documentary features intimate interviews with her as she opens up her personal archives to share never-before-seen photos, letters, and diary entries from her career.

    In an interview with The New York Times, Stewart gave “Martha” a somewhat scalding review and said “R.J. had total access” to her archive but “really used very little. It was just shocking.” She also revealed she tried to get some of the last scenes that Cutler included in the film thrown out.

    “Those last scenes with me looking like a lonely old lady walking hunched over in the garden? Boy, I told him to get rid of those. And he refused,” Stewart said. “I hate those last scenes. Hate them. I had ruptured my Achilles’ tendon. I had to have this hideous operation. And so I was limping a little. But again, he doesn’t even mention why — that I can live through that and still work seven days a week.”

    Stewart also called out the “lousy” score Cutler chose to use in the movie, explaining: “I said to R.J., ‘An essential part of the film is that you play rap music.’ Dr. Dre will probably score it, or Snoop or Fredwreck. I said, ‘I want that music.’ And then he gets some lousy classical score in there, which has nothing to do with me.”

    She also took issue with the documentary focusing too much on her 2004 trial, where she was convicted on felony charges related to the ImClone stock trading case. “It was not that important. The trial and the actual incarceration was less than two years out of an 83-year life,” she argued. “I considered it a vacation, to tell you the truth.”

    There was also the documentary’s bad angles. “He had three cameras on me,” Stewart explained to The Times. “And he chooses to use the ugliest angle. And I told him, ‘Don’t use that angle! That’s not the nicest angle. You had three cameras. Use the other angle.’ He would not change that.”

    Stewart didn’t give a complete pan, however. She said that she loved the first half of the documentary because “it gets into things that many people don’t know anything about.” Stewart also expressed gratitude for how the film is being received among young women viewers.

    “So many girls have already told me that watching it gave them a strength that they didn’t know they had,” Stewart said. “And that’s the thing I like most about the documentary. It really shows a strong woman standing up for herself and living through horror as well as some huge success.”

    “That’s what I wanted the documentary to be,” she added. “It shouldn’t be me boasting about inner strength and any of that crap. It should be about showing that you can get through life and still be yourself.”

    Cutler sent his own statement over to The Times, saying: “I am really proud of this film, and I admire Martha’s courage in entrusting me to make it. I’m not surprised that it’s hard for her to see aspects of it.”

    Lifestyle icon Martha Stewart turns 83 today, making her nearly two years older than President Joe Biden, a year older than actor Harrison Ford, and a full decade younger than media mogul Rupert Murdoch. And yet she seems happier than many of those contemporaries. Is that because she celebrated her birthday 1) in Paris, 2) at the Olympics, and 3) with Snoop Dogg, a Muppet, and a cake made of macarons? Perhaps!

    Stewart, who joked in 2022 that she was too busy to date, spent the day before her birthday on the interview circuit, appearing on Access Hollywood with omnipresent Paris Olympics superfan/“ambassador of happinessSnoop Dogg, with whom she shared a 2010s-era TV show.

    In the Friday interview, Martha Stewart and Snoop’s on-camera appearance was interrupted by Cookie Monster, a Muppet who’s previously matched wits with John Oliver, Sesame Street neighbor Big Bird, and E.T. But his appearance Friday was anything but contentious, though he snuck up behind Stewart as the interview progressed.

    “Martha! Hi! Happy birthday,” the Muppet called, according to a video posted to TikTok by Access Hollywood. “Cookie Monster, what’s happening baby?” Snoop exclaimed.

    After shouting “Bring it in” to an off-camera helper, the Muppet presented Stewart with a cone-shaped cake fashioned out of macarons, a meringue-based cookie known as a favorite of French Queen Catherine de’ Medici.

    As Stewart once noted on her show, Martha Bakes, it wasn’t until the 1900s that the current version of the filled, sandwich-cookie came into vogue. Stewart skipped the history lesson on Friday, however, digging into one of the cookies after subtly adjusting their plated presentation.

    On Saturday, her actual birthday, Stewart was still hard at work. With Snoop again at her side, the alleged Trump bird-flipper rolled into Versailles in full equestrian gear, where the duo provided commentary for that day’s Olympic dressage event.

    “Snoop called me, and he knows I love horses,” Stewart told Today of her birthday gig. “We’re going to have so much fun.”

    There are “kinds” of women who get lauded for doing the same things that other women have already been doing for quite some time. Martha Stewart is just such a kind of woman to receive praise for things that women in the latter category would instead be (and are) maligned for. And while her Sports Illustrated cover signals what one can only hope is a greater shift toward acceptance of women being sexy and sexual at whatever the fuck age they want to be, it also serves to reiterate a double standard in our society. One in which “good,” “homemaking” women are more respected than women who have been associated with iconoclasm and shirking “conventional femininity.”

    Although Stewart was long ago forced to shed her impervious image of full-stop goodness after being sent to prison in 2004 for insider trading, securities fraud, obstruction of justice and conspiracy (oh my!), her reputation didn’t take long to bounce back. And, if anything, her time in prison only augmented the public’s fascination with her. All of the sudden, she was way more interesting once the veneer of “infallibility” cracked. She had “cred.” Even Snoop Dogg started to hang out with her after she got incarcerated. But it was just the “right amount” of an impish streak, one that still made the public see her as a generous, ultimately docile and obedient soul. Her appearance on the cover of the famed Swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated marks her, at eighty-one, as the “oldest” cover model. In fact, one might say that setting records for being the oldest to do something is a new trend of late—considering Joe Biden’s presidency. And it speaks to a larger trend about how the so-called elderly are no longer shutting themselves away inside to avoid being met with torches and pitchforks for their mere existence. This was something that would have been unfathomable in the Old Hollywood era, when stars seemed to retreat permanently into their mansions at a certain age or die in bleak obscurity after their drug/alcohol addictions got the better of them (e.g., Barbara Payton and Mabel Normand). Better than to be “caught” looking as they did in their “aged” state. Arguably the first actress to defy this tacit, Logan’s Run-esque Hollywood rule was Gloria Swanson when she played, in meta fashion, a washed-up silent movie star named Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. A faded star, as it were, who stays, as alluded to, shut inside her house to avoid the reality that the outside world might inflict.

    But oh how times have changed since 1950, with “old” women out and about parading themselves like it’s no big deal at all. And it really isn’t. Especially with all the advancements in anti-aging treatments. Ones that a woman like Stewart can afford with no problem. And yet, despite looking barely a day over fifty (hell, maybe even forty with the right airbrushing), Stewart is still having a “break the internet” moment by gracing this cover. For it pushes a new boundary and sets a new precedent. Except that, well, it actually doesn’t. Because there’s been a certain other woman who’s been rallying behind anti-ageist views and gatekeeping for some time now, only to be met with venom and vitriol as a result. That woman, of course, is Madonna. Who has appeared on countless magazine covers and within their “spreads” to show as much (usually more) skin as Stewart is in Sports Illustrated. And sure, Stewart is almost a full twenty years older than Madonna, so it is more noteworthy in that sense, but the real reason so much praise instead of acrimony is being hurled toward Stewart is because she represents what society views as the abovementioned “right” kind of woman. More specifically, the “right” kind of “old” woman. She is “tasteful,” “beneficent,” “not slutty.” Madonna, in contrast, has always wielded her sexuality like the key ingredient of her personality that it is. And, obviously, part of her hyper-sexed nature is a result of growing up Catholic, told from the get-go that sex was wrong, forbidden, sinful—but it was especially wrong for any woman to take actual pleasure in sex. An act meant solely for men’s pleasure…and for women to fulfill their “duty” as a birthing mill.

    Stewart herself is a symbol of that kind of conventional “domestic goddess” femininity that patriarchal society still champions and reveres. And, funnily enough, she was raised Catholic as well. But it seemed the indoctrination of that religion didn’t instill within her quite the same rebellious sexual exhibitionism that it did within Madonna. It did, however, perhaps make her appreciate the value of pageantry that extended into her various homemaking and entertaining endeavors. Yet, despite being a symbol of “domesticity,” Stewart is in direct opposition to that stereotype by capitalistic virtue of being one of the most successful businesswomen in history. Monetizing reproductive labor in a manner that few women actually performing it in their day-to-day lives can. Madonna, then, is her polar opposite—the “whore” (yes, it’s ironic considering her name) on the two-sided spectrum of things that women can “be” in the eyes of men. Who still dictate what we digest via media outlets like Sports Illustrated. And, like Stewart, she is one of the most successful businesswomen ever to have existed. Except what she’s selling is not “home and hearth” (even if she did appear on the cover of Good Housekeeping back in 2000, not to mention a cover for Ladies’ Home Journal in 2005).

    Though she did attempt to for about a five-year period during her eight-year marriage in the 00s. Indeed, while married to Guy Ritchie, Madonna did have something of her “Martha Stewart phase,” catering to tropes about being “the missus” and “the Guv’nor’s wife” and “Mrs. Ritchie” as she moved to the English countryside and dabbled in writing children’s books before soon restoring herself to her original hyper-sexual form after the divorce (see: the W magazine cover that immediately followed: “Blame It On Rio,” in which she was featured “canoodling” with her brand-new, barely-clothed boytoy, Jesus Luz, among other men with anti-British bodies). In the end, Madonna perhaps realized that she couldn’t sell conventional domestic life with conviction, which is why she’s done her own version of it by being both “mother and father” to her brood of six children, three of which (Mercy, Stella and Estere) were adopted from Malawi after her divorce from Ritchie.

    Stewart flies more under the radar for her unconventional femininity, also having divorced her husband, Andrew Stewart (whose last name would prove invaluable to Martha), long before her empire reached its apex. Even so, that she’s dated so minimally (with Anthony Hopkins and Charles Simonyi being about the extent of her romantic past) since the divorce has undeniably helped fortify her “homey” image. A virtuous nun worshipping at the altar of homemaking and entertaining.

    In May of 1995, Stewart was heralded by New York Magazine as “the definitive American woman of our time.” That hasn’t really changed, despite the illusion of the alleged changing face of the domestic sphere. One that hasn’t gone much beyond the “progressiveness” of a movie like Mr. Mom in 1983 (side note: “Mr. Mom” only conceded to step into that role because he lost his breadwinning job). With Stewart’s Sports Illustrated cover, it is encouraging that women are being shown (in a rare instance of patriarchal weakness) that it’s possible (with enough money) to be “sexy at any age.” But, by the same token, it’s not comforting to realize that the reason this is being conceded to is because the underlying message remains the same as it always has: so long as you’re the “right” kind of woman, who has long advocated for the “right” kind of values, you’ll be embraced.

    American television personality Martha Stewart once said, “There is no single recipe for success. But there is one essential ingredient: Passion.”

    The 81-year-old lifestyle guru certainly brought the passion to Sports Illustrated as part of her newly revealed Swimsuit Issue cover. Stewart, who unveiled the cover in a Today show appearance on Monday, made history as the oldest model ever to be on the front of the annual Swimsuit Issue.

    Stewart cheekily told the Today show hosts that she likes the picture of herself in a plunging white one-piece bathing suit, paired with a flowy orange cover-up.

    “I’m sort of shaking,” Stewart said, visibly excited about the cover reveal. “It’s odd to go to an island and change into nine different bathing suits in one day in front of all those people, and it turned out OK.”

    “When I heard that I was going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, I thought, Oh, that’s pretty good, I’m going to be the oldest person I think ever on a cover of Sports Illustrated,” Stewart told the magazine.

    She added: “I don’t think about age very much, but I thought that this is kind of historic.”

    Stewart said she wanted to be photographed for the cover to prove that women can look and feel good at any age.

    The photos were taken by Ruven Afanador in the Dominican Republic on location at the Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. Stewart modelled 10 different swimsuits including a low-cut red halter swimsuit, a tan one-piece and a trendy metallic black-and-silver suit with a zipper.

    Martha Stewart reroofed the hut where she keeps her baskets. This isn’t euphemism or metaphor. The doyen of domesticity has put a new roof on the inviolable domain built to accommodate her large collection of woven containers. 

    Stewart wrote about the process on her must-read blog, Up Close & Personal. “Many of these baskets I hadn’t seen in awhile,” she said. “They always bring back fond memories.”

    One could lose an afternoon just imagining Stewart greeting her old friends, the baskets, one by one, as she places them on newly swept shelves. There’s the melon basket, also known as a “buttocks basket” due to its shape. “Hello, you,” she says. And the hearty garden baskets known as “trugs.” “How are you holding up, old boys?” The berry baskets. “Well, I suppose some congratulations are in order,” she tells them. The baskets for gathering eggs. “I trust the family is well,” etc.

    I love the basket house and its remodel, and also feel generally better just knowing that Stewart owns a house for her baskets, But one can’t think too hard about it. The goal posts for happiness in a modern world keep moving, don’t they? First, we needed to own a home. Now, it’s absolutely imperative that we have a hut on the property that keeps all of our antique and precious baskets. I, for one, simply won’t know happiness without my basket house.

    So what does one look for in a basket house? From Stewart’s photos and descriptions, a high and dry area sounds right. A generous space. Windows on three sides for “good cross ventilation.” Placement is important. If it is not “located across from my long clematis pergola,” as Martha’s is, then reconsider the location. These are all good things to keep in mind while planning your own basket hut, a fresh addendum to the American dream. Because what is a dream if not something to look forward to, and what’s better to look forward to than a house for one’s baskets?

    Licht launched the Galentine’s lunch the year she separated from husband No. 1. She subsequently married famed ad man and restaurateur Jerry Della Femina in 1983.

    Among the powerhouse women in attendance this year at Licht’s Upper East Side townhouse was Martha Stewart, 81 — who brought heart-shaped Valentine’s boxes for everyone filled with “feel good” CBD gummies, we hear.

    In the past, Oreo has partnered with Lady Gaga, Pokémon and Ritz on new limited-time flavors. Now, it’s working with … itself. And Martha Stewart.

    The cookie brand’s latest limited-edition cookie is an Oreo stuffed with Oreos.

    Dubbed “the Most OREO OREO,” the cookie is made with the usual chocolate wafers, filled (to the “Most Stuf” extreme) with a creme that has Oreo bits mixed in, for a meta cookies-n-creme experience. The flavor is available for pre-sale through the Oreo website starting Tuesday, and will hit shelves at major retailers nationwide starting on January 30 for a suggested retail price of $4.99.

    The packages come with a QR code that allows buyers to access online games and chances to win prizes in the so-called Oreoverse — Oreo’s entrée into the metaverse, a virtual space where people interact through avatars. Those with VR headsets can use them to access the Oreoverse. Others can just use their phones or computers.

    For brands, the metaverse promises a whole new way to reach young customers, and Oreo isn’t the only brand trying to market to people using new online spaces.

    “We love to create new opportunities for our fans to connect with each other,” said Julia Rosenbloom, Oreo’s senior brand manager, in a statement announcing the new flavor, noting “we’re so excited to enter the metaverse!”

    To help launch the Oreoverse, Oreo tapped Martha Stewart and Ryan McCallister, her gardener and quarantine buddy. On Monday, Stewart and McCallister will share their Oreoverse experiences on Oreo’s social media channels.

    Stewart also recently partnered with Tito’s Handmade Vodka on a tongue-in-cheek campaign that offers those observing dry January other ways to make use of vodka, llke putting a splash (or two) in a marinara sauce or deodorizing stinky boots.

    From big events like the Super Bowl and the Oscars to big stars from Nicole Kidman to Jack Harlow, there were plenty of moments worthy of the meme treatment this year. Here, we look back at some of our faves.

    Back on Feb. 13 at the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, and Eminem, 50 Cent treated the crowd to his 2003 hit “In Da Club” and recreated the video’s opening by hanging upside down. Cue the kick-off for many a meme:

    In a now-deleted Instagram post from November, Vin Diesel called for WNBA athlete Brittney Griner’s release from Russian prison, writing “I need Brittney Griner home before Christmas,” alongside a photo of himself at a basketball match. Following Griner’s release in a prisoner exchange for arms dealer on Dec. 8, social media users jokingly thanked the actor for his part.

    Some users believed the actor singlehandedly infiltrated the Russian prison by himself.


    A meta meme was born when Spider-Man stars Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire suited up to recreate the Spider-Man pointing meme.

    The Oscars is a perennial feast of memes, and this year was no different. While reliable meme star Nicole Kidman pulled her weight, there was obviously a new source of inspiration for meme-makers at the 2022 ceremony.

    This reaction shot was initially thought to be in response to The Slap, but it was later revealed that it was shot before the show got underway. It makes you wonder what her slap reaction looked like.

     


    Cameras caught a catty chat between Caitlyn Jenner and Lady Gaga outside the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 30th annual Academy Awards Viewing Party.

    She replied, “Yeah. A little. I mean, I was Josh Safdie’s muse when he wrote ‘Uncut Gems’, you know?” But her elaborate pronunciation of “Uncut Gems” was catnip to TikTok users, who garnered millions of views with their imitations of “Unka Jhaaaams.”

    It’s bad enough to be caught up in an Instagram cheating scandal. It’s even worse when the world makes fun of your (lack of) DM game.

    Here’s hoping that 2023 brings an equally mind-blowing meme harvest. That’s our one Christmas wish. It’s the toast we’ll be making on New Year’s Eve. It’s our biggest hope for the holidays. Feel free to meme it.

    Martha Stewart has responded to Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest ad for Goop, one that promotes the company’s annual luxury gift guide and name-checks the original lifestyle queen.

    “I was surprised that I was a part of her commercial and flattered that she wanted to take my call,” Stewart told Page Six. (Vanity Fair has reached out to the Goop camp for comment on the comment.)

    Paltrow shared the winking advertisement last Thursday ahead of the holiday week. It’s a guide to Goop’s guide, if you will, shot like a behind-the-scenes video. The actor turned entrepreneur shows who’s getting what from the always interesting, sometimes controversial holiday gift guide. 

    And Stewart isn’t the only star whose name makes it into the spot. Drew Barrymore gets a vibrator, while Bella Hadid gets some jamón. Paltrow’s ex-fiancé, Brad Pitt, gets one of her Goop-branded skin care products (he recently made his own skin care line, and Paltrow previously offered him a little advice). 

    Cameron Diaz makes an in-person appearance too. She’s enjoying some cross-promotion and touting her Avaline wine. 

    At the end of the video, Paltrow answers her phone after getting in a car. The person on the other end of the call says, “Gwyneth, Martha Stewart’s on the line. It sounds urgent.”

    “Guys, I gotta take this,” Paltrow says. Then she puts on red lipstick and drives away. 

    It’s pointed but not super sharp. Mostly, it’s all very PG, all very in Goop fun.

    The Stewart-Paltrow history has been categorized as a feud in the past, though it’s not yet at the level that would get noticed by, say, Ryan Murphy. It’s one mainly comprised of sound bites delivered by the lifestyle mavens through the press because they get asked about each other in interviews. 

    In 2013, as Goop began to kick into high gear, Stewart started it all by telling Bloomberg TV, “Gwyneth, for example, has a book on the best-seller list. She must be doing something right. She’s a charming, pretty person who has a feeling for lifestyle. She wants to be a lifestyle arbiter. Fine. Good. I think I started this whole category of lifestyle.”

    The next year Stewart told Net-a-Porter, “[Paltrow] just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.”

    Then at a panel event some weeks later, Paltrow returned the quip, saying, “First of all, no one has ever said anything bad about me before, so I’m shocked and devastated. I’ll try to recover.” And then she added, “If I’m really honest, I am so psyched that she sees us as competition. Like, I’m so psyched. I really am.”

    It’s sort of continued like that ever since. During a 2019 episode of Alex Rodriguez and Barstool Sports’ podcast, The Corp, Stewart said, “I don’t follow Goop. Sometimes I look at products that she’s selling. I wish every young entrepreneur well, and I hope that there are many, many, many different kinds of entrepreneurs—if they’re movie stars or hardworking women like I am, who are not movie stars. If they have a good idea, I want them to be able to succeed. So good luck, Gwyneth.”
