Long time restaurants in the marina have been shuttered in recent months, which makes Stoa

This summer, Marina del Rey lost two mainstay eateries, Tony P’s Dockside Grille and California Pizza Kitchen. But, luckily for the residents in the densely populated hood for both walkers and boaters, a long-awaited treasure has just opened: Stoa Wine Bar & Market.

The European-style eatery, reminiscent of a cafe in Milan, opened as part of the luxury AMLI complex on Via Marina as both a daytime market and deli that at 5 p.m. – with a fabulous happy hour – turns into a buzzy evening wine bar with a fantastic menu (the pizza is not to be missed).

The market was curated in collaboration with Tony Princiotta and Norbert Wabnig, who cut their teeth at the Beverly Hills Cheese Shop, and it shows. The display case showcases international cheeses, charcuterie, small-production wines, and other sought-after take-home fare. In the kitchen, executive chef Jordan Olivo, of Charcoal in Venice, has created a masterful and seasonal, ingredient-driven menu that can be enjoyed on-site in its simplistic and soothing dining room, or packed for a marina-side picnic.

The entire concept, created by hospitality veterans Constantine Savvides and Richard Peters, is designed specifically to spark conversations among neighbors who might not ordinarily chat. The strangers who become fast friends, a philosophy that European travelers are familiar with. The outdoor patio has seating around an olive tree – which is a nod to the restaurant’s inspiration, the Stoa Poikile in Athens – and is aglow with amber colored string lights.

In fact, the eatery is getting ready to invite philosophers, literally, to dinner.

Stoa is planning to debut a Philosopher in Residence program—starting with Professor Jacob Stump of Northeastern University—where guests can “order” guided conversations from a menu of timeless questions, “blending playfulness with depth,” the restaurant says.

  • Man arrested in Marina del Rey after gunfire sprayed from rooftop is reportedly livestreamed

Man arrested in Marina del Rey after gunfire sprayed from rooftop is reportedly livestreamed

A man was arrested Saturday night after allegedly shooting multiple rounds of gunfire from the top of a Marina del Rey apartment building, scaring neighbors and drawing a large emergency response, authorities said.

No one was injured as a result of the heavy gunfire, which was sprayed down on the streets along the 4100 block of Via Marina, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

An arrest was made after 911 calls came in after 10 p.m. about relentless gunfire in the affluent seaside Los Angeles neighborhood. The suspect — whose name has not been released — is in custody, and an investigation is ongoing, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

A livestream of the incident appeared to be posted by the shooter, according to City News Service. Those videos appear to have been removed from the internet.

An L.A. County Sheriff’s Department helicopter observed a male suspect on the roof of an apartment complex “firing rounds from a rifle,” according to a news release.

Armored SWAT-style vehicles responded to the active shooter scene and closed down streets in the Via Marina area late Saturday night.

Witnesses told City News Service that the man is a chef.

Video shows 1 of 6 smash-and-grab burglaries at Marina del Rey businesses; 3 in custody

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) — Thieves targeted six Marina del Rey businesses in overnight smash-and-grab burglaries, at least one of which was captured on surveillance video, authorities said.

Three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the break-ins, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, but whether the suspects and all six of the burglaries were connected remained unclear. Investigators confirmed that each of the individuals in custody lives in the area.

At one of the businesses, a Greek restaurant, video footage shows a lone intruder shattering a glass front door before heading straight for the cash register behind a counter.

All six of the businesses were hit in the hours after midnight, the LAPD said.

Video shows one of the startled robbers fall to the ground and drop his hammer as the owner opened fire.

Officers initially responded to the Ultra Beauty store on Maxella Avenue, just east of Lincoln Boulevard. Other nearby establishments were also burglarized, including a Starbucks location, a juice bar and a Hawaiian barbecue restaurant

“They were up there cleaning, they heard the windows starting to break,” said Rick Tavarez of Commercial Property Maintenance. “There’s no visibility of what’s going on from where they were. If you go up on the top and you walk around the corner, there’s a balcony over there, and so … the person that was cleaning walked around, looked down, saw the people breaking in the windows, called 911. They saw her and they took off.”

No estimate of the amount of cash and merchandise that was stolen was immediately available.

Massive fire guts historic California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey

Firefighters worked overnight Monday to extinguish a blaze that erupted at a historic yacht club in Marina del Rey.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call around 11:30 p.m. Monday for a structure fire at the California Yacht Club in the 4400 block of Admiralty Way, said Fred Fielding, a Fire Department spokesperson.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire engulfing the two-story building, fire officials said.

Video from news outlets showed large flames consuming the structure as smoke billowed overhead. Multiple firetrucks and firefighters were called in to help contain the blaze.

Two firefighters suffered moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital, Fielding said. The extent of their injuries and their status was not immediately known.

The blaze was knocked down just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, said Jeremy Stafford, supervising fire dispatcher at the L.A. County Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Stafford said.

The California Yacht Club was started in 1922 by yachtsman from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs, according to the club’s website.

Representatives for the club did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
