  • Over 200 pounds of cannabis found in traffic stop on I-80 in Berkeley, CHP says

    More than 200 pounds of cannabis was seized and a driver was arrested following a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Berkeley during the Monday evening commute, authorities said.

    Around 5:30 p.m., officers from the Oakland Area office pulled over a Chrysler SUV traveling westbound near Gilman Avenue after the driver was allegedly on their cellphone.

    During the traffic stop, officers said they detected a “strong odor of cannabis” coming from the vehicle. In addition, multiple large trash bags were seen in the rear cargo area of the SUV.

    Officers conducted a probable cause search. According to the CHP, 218 pounds of cannabis was seized and booked into evidence.

    “While personal cannabis use and possession are legal in California, strict regulations apply to its commercial cultivation, transportation, and distribution,” the agency said in a statement. “Individuals engaged in these activities must possess proper licensing and documentation in compliance with the law.”

    The driver was arrested on suspicion of unlawful transportation of cannabis for sale without a license, the CHP said.

    Authorities did not release the driver’s name.

    Oakland police are investigating an unlicensed smoke shop in East Oakland where officers seized several illegal products earlier this week, including cartons of banned tobacco products from out of state and nearly 10 pounds of marijuana bud.

    Police on Wednesday confiscated other items at the shop in the 2500 block of Seminary Avenue that included Psilocybin “magic” mushroom candy bars and close to 20 pounds of suspected THC products.

    Officers with the police department’s Alcohol Beverage Action Team were following up on anonymous complaints about the shop. In addition to seizing illegal items, they detained a store clerk.

    No arrests were made, but the case will be forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office for further action, including civil charges and potential eviction, police said in a news release on Thursday.

    (FOX40.COM) — The Solano County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies recently seized and destroyed nearly 1,000 illegally grown marijuana plants that posed a threat to wetlands in the area where they were being grown.

    The sheriff’s office added that deputies also found an assault rifle with high-capacity magazines and ammunition along with chemicals and fertilizers.

    “While growing marijuana plants in small amounts are legal in California, these large grows are illegal and can often be hazardous to our community and the environment,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.

    The post also said that the marijuana was being illegally grown in a sensitive wetland area that’s in the middle of a restoration.

    Over several weeks, Solano County deputies conducted surveillance before obtaining a search warrant to enter the property located in the unincorporated area of Solano County surrounding Dixon.

    The sheriff’s office said no one was at the location when the search warrant was served.

    60 human trafficking victims rescued during marijuana bust in Merced County – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Authorities are searching for the people behind a human trafficking operation in Merced County.

    On Wednesday afternoon, Merced County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at a home in the area of Vassar and Tyler Road.

    During the search, deputies found 60 people working to process hundreds of pounds of marijuana.

    They also found several animals that were not receiving proper care.

    As the investigation continued, detectives say they discovered the workers are victims of human trafficking.

    They were brought across the U.S. – Mexico border and arrived at the home days earlier.

    The workers were promised good-paying jobs and a place to stay.

    Instead, investigators say the workers were housed in bad living conditions while being forced to process marijuana to pay back those who brought them across the border.

    County officials offered several resources to those men and women.

    Child Protective Services was contacted for a child at the site who was later released to their parent.

    The animals were removed from the property and the investigation is ongoing.
