  • A Week 18 With No Stakes – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    Scheduling 16 Division matchups for the final week of the regular season continues to fight the league. With only TWO of the fourteen playoff positions up for grabs which will be decided between the Ravens/Steelers Sunday night game as well as Panthers/Buccaneers (with some help from Atlanta) Sunday afternoon.

    The Eagles will come into Sunday almost locked into the 3 Seed, but with a little bit of scoreboard help happening at the same time they play Washington could see them leap into the 2 Seed. A Lions win over the Bears would give the Eagles a need to compete against the Commanders, a team out for revenge from just two weeks ago.

    A Vengeful Rematch 

    The decision to go for 2 points, putting the Eagles up 19 points late into the 4th quarter was the right decision. The Eagles had already missed two field goals, taking 6 points off the board of what ended as a 29-18 game. 

    The ever so clueless Dan Quinn, who hasn’t learned from his time in Atlanta. Part of the comical 28-3 Falcons Super Bowl loss. Or multiple years as the Cowboys defensive coordinator, giving up 48 points to a 7th seed Packers team in his last game on the sideline for “Americas team.” 

    Upset over the Eagles decision to go for 2, Quinn stated “If that’s how they want to get down, we’ll see them again in two weeks.” Feels very threatening for a Week 18 division opponent matchup. Which leads to the question.

    Did Dan Quinn forget that the Eagles clinched the NFC East title with their Week 16 victory at Northwest Stadium?

    The Commanders season was realistically over by their Bye Week(if not earlier) Sitting at 3-8, losing their franchise QB for weeks at a time, rushing him back from numerous injuries just to be sidelined again feels like something a desperate team would do. 

    Add in injuries to Tyler Biadasz, Marcus Mariota, Laremy Tunsil, Sam Cosmi, Trey Amos, amongst plenty of players like Zach Ertz, Marshon Lattimore and Austin Ekeler. The #1 thing the Commanders should be playing for on Sunday is draft position. 

    7th overall is a great place to be for a team that was only 22 points from punching their ticket to a Super Bowl less than 12 months ago. 

    If 17th year Josh Johnson is able to lead the Commanders to a nothingburger victory against Tanner McKee and what we should expect to be most of the Eagles backup & reserve players. Then I guess we can give Dan Quinn & Co. Their flowers of “only beating an Eagles backup QB” 2 years running.

  • Clinchmas Is On The Horizon  – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    With 3 weeks to go in the regular season, playoff spots are starting to be snatched up. With the Broncos, Seahawks and Rams being the first teams to clinch a playoff spot, many more will soon follow. 

    Including the Eagles, whose magic number jumped from 3 all the way to 1 on Sunday following a Raiders blowout and a Cowboys season that’s nearly over, courtesy of “Nine” and the Minnesota Vikings. 

    And the Eagles first opportunity to punch their ticket into the postseason comes a day earlier this week. With a Saturday night game against the Washington Commanders

    The Last Match

    January 26th 2025 was the last time these teams saw each other. In an NFC Championship Game division matchup. To end a conversation:

    What would happen if Jalen Hurts played all 4 quarters of the Week 16 loss?

    A game that saw the Eagles take a quick 14-0 lead that saw Hurts exit due to a concussion just 5 minutes into the game. The final score ended 36-33 after the Eagles defense couldn’t get a stop, and the offense led by Kenny Pickett could barely pick up a first down. 

    To open the NFC championship game, the Commanders led an 18 play, 54 yard drive that included two 4th down conversions and finished with 3 points. The Eagles answer to that drive? This Saquon Barkley60 yard TD on the Eagles opening play of the game. 

    What followed was an absolute rout. The Eagles saw a 12 point lead at halftime, before they took things personally and finished the game with a 21 point 4th quarter after forcing two turnovers by the Commanders. 

    Now, things will look a little different. 

    Saturday Night

    Jayden Daniels has since been shut down for the season. With multiple injuries sidelining him for weeks at a time. Instead, the Eagles will play against their former backup QB Marcus Mariota who has lead his current team to a 1-3 record. 

    Having been eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago, the Commanders will have nothing to play for but draft position, and attempting to foil the Eagles playoff/seeding hopes. 

    However with a laundry list of injuries ranging from Laremy Tunsil, and Colson Yankoff listed Out for this week. With names like Trey Amos, Luke McCaffrey, Zach Ertz, Marshon Lattimore and Dorance Armstrong already on injured reserve, the Commanders will be thin at numerous positions. Hoping the Eagles can take advantage of a depleted team that thought they could repeat a 12-5 Cinderella run from only a year ago.

  • Jayden Daniels leaves game after Washington QB’s nonthrowing arm bends gruesomely

    WASHINGTON (AP) — Jayden Daniels was being dragged down by a defender when he stuck his left arm out and put his hand on the ground.

    That’s when a dismal night for the Washington Commanders turned downright horrifying.

    Daniels’ nonthrowing arm bent gruesomely, and the star quarterback had to leave Washington’s 38-14 loss to Seattle on Sunday night with 7:29 remaining in the fourth quarter. It’s the third — and perhaps the most significant — injury of the season for Daniels, who was in his first game back from a hamstring issue.

    “It’s really tough to see him go down. You just want him to stay positive,” Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner said. “You don’t know what the result is. You just speak a lot of positivity into existence. He’s a very positive person so we’re just praying for the best.”

    The NFL’s reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year exited with a significant injury late during a lopsided defeat. Correspondent Gethin Coolbaugh reports.

    Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Daniels injured his elbow. That was about the extent of the postgame update. Quinn didn’t have much of an explanation for why Daniels was still in the game. Washington was trailing 38-7 at the time.

    “Obviously like the hindsight, you don’t want to think that way, where an injury could take place,” Quinn said. “Obviously we’re more conservative in that spot to run and hand off and not have reads to go, but just the end result — obviously, I’m bummed.”

    In addition to the hamstring injury, Daniels also missed two games earlier this season with knee issues.

    Although an injury to Daniels’ non-throwing arm isn’t necessarily career altering, Commanders fans could hardly be blamed for immediately fearing the worst. It was on this same field about 13 years ago — against the same opponent — that Robert Griffin III went down with a severe knee injury at the end of his sensational rookie season for Washington. He never reached those heights again.

    The Commanders fell behind early Sunday and trailed 31-7 at halftime, and Daniels had to do plenty of scrambling. He ended up running for 51 yards on 10 carries, and the injury underscored the risk in doing that.

    “I think that’s his nature. He wants to be aggressive and make plays,” Quinn said. “He’s got confidence in the other players. I do know that. So it’s not like, ‘I have to do more, I have to do things that are outside of playing in that way.’ We also have to have everybody. Injuries happen and you hate it.”

    As a rookie last season, Daniels led Washington to the NFC championship game — its best season since 1991. Now the Commanders are 3-6 after four straight losses. If the season can be salvaged, it may have to be with Marcus Mariota at quarterback.

    During those moments when Daniels was slow to get up, however, it was the long-term future that seemed like the bigger issue.

    “I didn’t see what happened exactly. I just heard a pause and I kind of put my head down and prayed for him,” Commanders guard Sam Cosmi said. “You just don’t want to see that happen.”

  • Travis Kelce ties Chiefs’ touchdown mark as Kansas City puts on show in win

    Travis Kelce tied a franchise mark for total touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs used a second-half surge to trounce the injury-riddled Washington Commanders on Monday night, 28-7.

    Kelce notched the 83rd touchdown of his career on a 10-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes in the third quarter. He had 80 touchdown catches, two rushing touchdowns and one fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. He tied Priest Holmes with the milestone.

    The touchdown also added Kelce to an exclusive club with other legendary tight ends. He joined Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham as the only other tight ends in NFL history with at least 80 touchdown catches. Counting the playoffs, Kelce has 100 touchdown catches in his career.

    Kansas City went up 21-7 after the score and really never looked back from there.

    Kelce had six catches for 99 yards as Kansas City has yet to have a 100-yard receiver this season. Mahomes was 25-of-34 with 299 passing yards, three touchdown passes and two interceptions.

    Kareem Hunt had two touchdowns in the game as well – one rushing and one receiving. Rashee Rice had the other receiving touchdown.

    2025 NFL WEEK 9 BUZZ: WILL PUKA NACUA RETURN?; JETS, SAINTS MULLING QB CHANGES

    The Commanders were playing without Jayden Daniels and George Fant as well as key defensive figures in Noah Igbinoghene and Ale Kaho.

    Marcus Mariota started for Daniels again and had the Commanders in pretty good position to get an advantage. Mariota found Terry McLaurin for an 11-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. McLaurin used a nifty toe tap to secure the touchdown.

    Coming out of halftime, the Commanders’ offense was nowhere to be found. Washington only had one offensive possession in the third quarter and were susceptible to punts in the fourth.

    It was far from the type of play that was needed to beat the defending AFC champion Chiefs.

    Mariota was 21-of-30 with 213 yards, a touchdown pass and two picks.

    Don’t look now, but the Chiefs have won five of their last six games and have the Buffalo Bills in their crosshairs in Week 9.

  • Birdies head to bye week with a W: Falcons win 34-27 over Commanders

    The Atlanta Falcons hosted the Washington Commanders in what quickly became a must-win game following Atlanta’s 30-0 loss in Charlotte last week. In only the second home game of the season, the Falcons managed to score 34 points in a seven-point victory over the Commanders. Go figure.

    The final offensive possession for Atlanta displayed the potential this team has. Falcons quarterback Michael Penix ran for a first down, completed passes to tight end Kyle Pitts and Drake London, and commanded (pun intended)the offense like a veteran.

    Sunday was Penix’s seventh career start.

    The Commanders entered the game on a four-game winning streak against the Falcons. Former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn and the Commanders defeated the Falcons in Landover, Maryland, last season. This season, Washington is looking for a bit more motivation with former Falcons starting quarterback Marcus Mariota starting under center for the Commanders, with Jayden Daniels out.

    The Falcons began the game by scoring on their first two possessions of the first quarter. The total time of possession and the usage of Bijan Robinson and Drake London were the highlights of the opening 15 minutes. The Falcons had the ball for 12:27 of the first quarter. During those two possessions, which ended in a 38-yard field goal for Parker Romo and a 5-yard touchdown catch for London from quarterback Michael Penix, Falcons offensive coordinator Zach Robinson mixed the playcalling up well. London had four receptions on that second possession, Robinson had 39 yards rushing on nine carries during the first quarter, and tight end Kyle Pitts caught a pass for a first down.

    Washington, coming off a win over the Las Vegas Raiders last week, finally got the ball back late in the first quarter and began the second quarter with a touchdown drive that ended with a Mariota pass to receiver Luke McCaffrey for the Commanders’ first score of the game.

    Ahead 17-10 following a 43-yard field goal by the Commanders, the Falcons’ offense was back on the field with 5:24 remaining in the first half. For the first time in the game, the Falcons failed to score a point during an offensive possession.

    The Atlanta Falcons lead at the half, 17-10. It was a far cry from the scoreless performance against the Carolina Panthers a week earlier.

    The Falcons’ defense started the second half by giving up a 16-yard play on a first and 30 in Washington’s territory. The Commanders dragged out a long offensive possession that included a Mariota run for 15 yards and a 52-yard field goal from kicker Matt Gay to pull closer at 17-13. That drive ate up nearly five minutes.

    The Falcons answered that score with a touchdown drive that took two plays: a screen pass from Penix to Robinson for 69 yards and a seven-yard touchdown reception by Pitts.

    Falcons rookie safety Xavier Watts intercepted a Mariota pass midway through the third quarter to put the ball back in the hands of Penix and the offense. It’s hard to understand how this team managed to leave Carolina without any points. But they didn’t score on the next possession. Instead, Penix was intercepted on a long pass that put the Commaders back in Falcons territory. A 41-yard field goal by Gay made the score 24-16 in favor of the home team.

    Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier has the patience of a saint. Despite running for 1,000 yards as a rookie three seasons ago, he seems content with getting the backup carries behind Robinson. Allgeier, who should be a well-sought-after free agent next season, scored on a 25-yard run down the Commaders’ sideline to put the Falcons ahead 31-16 at the end of the third quarter.

    This season’s Falcons front line is much improved. Veteran linebacker Kaden Ellis and veteran edge rusher Leonard Floyd shared a sack in the first half, and Ellis got another in the fourth quarter. Rookie edge rusher Jalon Walker wasn’t credited with a sack this game, but continued to put pressure on the Commanders’ offensive line.

    Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn was caught in the middle of a play and run over during the team’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

    Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota ran to his left as the team moved up the field before halftime. He was pushed out of bounds by Raiders defensive back Tristin McCollum. Mariota ran through Quinn, who was trying to halt his player’s momentum.

    Quinn’s head appeared to connect with Mariota’s shoulder pad as he fell backward to the ground. The FOX broadcast showed the veteran coach with a bloody nose. Washington hit a field goal before halftime to go up 20-10.

    “I’m OK, everything’s good. Just gonna be this kind of day where it’s a physical game, back and forth, and that’s what we expected coming in,” he told FOX’s Jennifer Hale before the second half began.

    The Commanders won the game, 41-24.

    Mariota started for an injured Jayden Daniels. He dug deep and went 15-of-21 passing with 207 yards and a touchdown pass. He added 40 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

    It was his first start since 2022 when he was with the Atlanta Falcons.

    Jaylin Lane electrified the crowd with a 95-yard punt return for a touchdown as well.

    Raiders quarterback Geno Smith had 289 passing yards and threw three touchdown passes in the loss. Tre Tucker led the way with eight catches for 145 yards. He caught all three of Smith’s touchdown passes.

    Here’s where recent former Eagles will be playing next season

    The Eagles had a mini-makeover this offseason, which is a good thing.

    After a red-hot start and ugly collapse, simply running it back for 2024 would have been an unacceptable course of action, and as such the Eagles said goodbye to several prominent pieces from last season.

    Time will tell whether Howie Roseman and company made the right decisions. 

    A flurry of activity always hits in the spring when a new NFL league year and free agency begin — leading into the NFL Draft at the end of April. It can be hard to follow all the player movement. And that’s why we’ve thrown together this quick whip-around, to help Eagles fans keep track of where some of their old friends may be competing next season.

    Here’s a look at the new homes for 15 recent former Eagles who made some sort of impact on the squad last season:

    Marcus Mariota, QB

    Mariota signed a deal with the NFC East’s Commanders to help Jayden Daniels adjust to the NFL. He’ll likely be the back up to the second overall draft pick.

    D’Andre Swift, RB

    Swift was the first player off the board when free agency started back in May, inking a 3-year, $24 million deal with the Bears that seemed too rich for the Eagles’ blood. And then of course, they spent more than that to bring in Saquon Barkley.

    Boston Scott, RB

    The Eagles’ perennial Giant killer has moved on, and will fight for a roster spot with the Rams this spring.

    Rashaad Penny, RB

    Expected to have more of an impact when he joined the Eagles last offseason, Penny might have a better opportunity in Carolina with the Panthers, where he signed in April.

    Quez Watkins, WR

    The Eagles are rolling the dice at their No. 3 wideout spot, hoping one of the two rookies they signed (Ainias Smith, Johnny Wilson), or one of the veterans they signed (John Ross, Parris Campbell) can step into the role and make more of an impact than Watkins did in his four Eagles seasons. Watkins is with the Steelers this spring.

    Olamide Zaccheaus, WR

    The same goes for Zaccheaus, who was a depth wideout last season and didn’t add much on the field. He signed and will try and earn a role with the Commanders.

    Jack Stoll, TE

    A new No. 3 tight end will also emerge in Philly, as the block-first TE Stoll has signed with the rival Giants.

    Nick Morrow, LB

    The Eagles have a new-look linebacking core behind Dakobe Dean, and Morrow will take his next snap with the Bills.

    Christian Elliss, LB

    Mostly a special teams guy, Elliss will be with the Patriots if he makes their roster out of training camp.

    Haason Reddick, Edge

    The Eagles made some headlines — head-scratching ones to many — when they elected to trade away sack-mavin Reddick to the Jets not long after they signed New York’s top free agent pass rusher Bryce Huff to a pretty rich deal. Reddick was a Philly-grown star and a fan favorite and Eagles fans no doubt wish him luck up I-95 with the Jets this season.

    Derrick Barnett, Edge

    Barnett was actually waived by the Eagles last November and quickly signed by the Texans where he had 2.5 sacks in six games in Houston. Barnett was a first round pick by the Birds who was on the Super Bowl winning roster and tallied 21.5 QB takedowns in seven seasons in Philly.

    Kentavius Street, DT

    Street was a depth defensive lineman who didn’t play a ton in Philly. He’ll suit up with the Falcons this summer.

    Josiah Scott, CB

    Scott was a depth defensive back, who did get on the field a bit due to injuries in the Eagles’ secondary the last few seasons. He’ll try and earn a solid role with the Steelers.

    Kevin Byard, S

    After being the Eagles’ splashy trade deadline acquisition last season, the All-Pro fell sort of expectations in Philly and was not expected to return for another year as the Eagles were aggressive in upgrading at safety this offseason. Byard will play for the Bears in 2024.

    Terrell Edmonds, S

    A depth piece at safety, Edmonds will be in the Jaguars organization this year.

    What Shows Should You Stream This Spring?

    I’m at that point in life where I’m re-watching my favorite comfort shows for the zillionth time because nothing else is on. All of the shows I watch aren’t currently airing, and quite frankly, I’m bored. I can essentially quote New Girl word-for-word now because of this agonizing lull.

    And while Zooey Deschanel is never the wrong choice, I’m already counting down the days until I have something new to watch. There are plenty of good shows in existence, but when it takes Euphoria three years to create a new season…times get tough.

    Luckily enough for me – and the rest of the world – there have been a few recent announcements that have restored my faith in the streaming service gods. The TV networks have seen me re-watch Ted Lasso for the umpteenth time and decided it’s finally time to give me a new season. We can collectively release a sigh of relief.

    HBO Max, Apple TV+, Netflix, and more have been slowly announcing their upcoming shows for spring 2023 and I’m finally feeling better. I can feel myself being released from the grip of excessive reality television as we speak. I’ve even been watching countless re-runs of Degrassi (which is Drake at his best, by the way).

    If you’re feeling a little uninspired, underwhelmed, and burnt out from browsing Hulu’s main page for a show to stick out – same. But there’s hope on the horizon. Here are the best shows to stream this spring across all platforms:

    Ted Lasso – Apple TV+, March 15

    With 40 Emmy nominations and 11 wins, the accolades speak for themselves.
    Ted Lasso follows Jason Sudeikis as the title character throughout his time coaching AFC Richmond soccer as an American football coach. With lovable characters like Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), it’s hard not to become obsessed with the show.

    Everyone loves a good underdog story, and this one is no exception. This season’s dilemma? How will Coach Nate coaching Rupert’s team affect AFC Richmond’s future?

    Succession – HBO Max, March 26

    Another huge contender at the Emmy’s: HBO Max’s Succession. It’s a drama series reminiscent of the Murdaugh family, with Logan Roy (Brian Cox) heading the media conglomerate Waystar Royco. Although his retirement is ever-looming, his children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook) are constantly competing for a spot at the head of the table.

    Viewers go insane for the relationship between Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) and Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen), but season four is going to be explosive considering all of the children are in their “Reputation Era” of sorts.

    Quarterback – Netflix

    Netflix just announced they’re releasing
    Quarterback, which follows three QBs in the NFL during the 2022 season. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs), Marcus Mariota (Atlanta Falcons), and Kirk Cousins (Minnesota Vikings) were mic’d up each game and are now giving fans the most intimate look into the season.

    Since there are a little under 200 days until we see the next snap of a football,

    It feels like Penn Badgley becomes the most viral person on the internet whenever a new season of You premieres. The newest installment of the Netflix series has been divided in two parts. The first is out now, and the next comes out March 9.

    We are finally seeing Joe get a taste of his own medicine. In a Knives Out-style who-dunnit, Joe is surrounded by a group of rich elite in England and someone is out to get him. With rising stars like Lukas Gage (Euphoria, White Lotus), I’m anticipating big things from part two.

    Brace yourselves. Soon everyone will be back trying to mold themselves into a John B derivative. Outer Banks is back for another season of rewriting The Goonies and us eating it up. Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Rudy Pankow, Drew Starkey, Madison Bailey, and Jonathon Daviss will take up our social media from here on out.

    Netflix knows they have a grip on the TikTok community with this show, so I can only imagine there will be lots of thirst-trap-worthy clips, a run-in with the police and the Kooks, and a plethora of bandanas tied around the neck. The Outer Banks, paradise on Earth.

    Daisy Jones & The Six – Amazon Prime Video, March 3

    If you know me, you know I’ve been anticipating this show for almost a year now. One of my favorite books of all time by Taylor Jenkins Reid has been turned into an Amazon Prime miniseries. If you’re a fan of Fleetwood Mac and 70’s rock and roll, this show will give you your fix.

    With a star-studded cast featuring Riley Keough (Elvis’ granddaughter), Suki Waterhouse, Sam Claflin, and Camila Morrone, I expect nothing less than excellence. Keough and Claflin play TJR’s version of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, as the show follows the tumultuously talented band looking back on their prime years.
