  • Man injured in shooting at Maplewood Mall; police seeking suspect

    [ad_1]

Police are looking for a suspect after a man was injured in a shooting at the Maplewood Mall in Maplewood, Minnesota, on Sunday afternoon.

Law enforcement and personnel with the Maplewood Fire Department responded to the mall at 3001 White Bear Ave. around 2:02 p.m. for the incident. Officers found the man, who had been shot in the hip, according to police. He was taken to the hospital with an injury that was not life-threatening.

Officials said the shooting stemmed from a group fighting in a lower level of the mall. Two juveniles, whose ages have yet to be disclosed, were detained.

Police said the suspected shooter is a male with a small build and was wearing a black stocking hat, a black jacket, a white shirt and black pants.

The mall previously said in a statement of its own that the suspect was “swiftly apprehended” and that the shooting was an “isolated incident” that involved two individuals under the age of 22.

  • Woman in Twin Cities suburb finds loaded gun while walking dog; police investigating

    [ad_1]

If you were out for a walk and found a loaded gun, would you know what to do? That happened recently in Maplewood, Minnesota. Police there say they can’t recall the last time it happened.

The woman said she was walking her dog in the area of Century Avenue South and Linwood Avenue East when she saw what looked like a toy gun. She says she picked it up and once she felt the weight of it, she quickly realized she was holding a real gun.

Maplewood police responded to collect the weapon, which was loaded. A broken gun holster was found near the curb, about 15 feet away.

Lt. Joe Steiner says the gun is a Springfield XD 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun.

“In this case, a likely scenario is that someone had it on top of their vehicle, and as they were driving around the corner of the street, it looks like it may have fallen off,” Steiner said.

“The biggest risks are someone with a criminal or a nefarious intent to use the firearm if they find it. Or obviously, the most concerning worry would be a child finding the gun and harming themselves or someone else,” Steiner said when asked about the danger of having a firearm out in the open.

Steiner says law enforcement expects gun owners to be responsible.

“And a part of that responsibility is being able to account for your firearms at all times. And if you do lose your firearm, or if it’s stolen, you need to report that to the police immediately, including providing the serial number for that firearm so it can be entered as lost or stolen,” Steiner said.

Steiner says so far, the gun hasn’t been reported stolen or missing. Police ran the semi-automatic through NIBIN, a ballistic evidence database. Police say it came back clear or not connected to any crime scene.

So where did the gun come from? And who does it belong to? That’s all part of the investigation.

“There is a shooting range that St Paul Police Department operates. We have spoken with the St Paul Police Department, and they do not have any reports of a missing firearm from their officers,” Steiner said.

Police say they sent the information to the ATF’s National Tracing Center to try to get an investigative lead. The trace may be delayed because of the government shutdown.

Investigators say if you come across anything that looks like a gun, call the police.

When asked if the owner could face charges, police say a negligence charge is possible in some cases, but only if a child finds the gun.

Minnesota authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating an endangered teen girl who they say ran away from a residential treatment program earlier this month.

Fifteen-year-old Olivia Nave left the Maplewood treatment facility at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, just hours after being returned there from a prior runaway attempt, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Officers say when they found Nave previously, she claimed to be 19 years old.

Nave is a prior trafficking victim, authorities say, and is at high risk of revictimization.

Anyone with information regarding Nave’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or contact the Maplewood Police Department at 651-249-2631.

Mother charged in Maplewood crash that killed her 1-year-old son

Mother charged in Maplewood crash that killed her 1-year-old son

    01:47

The Minnesota State Patrol says a toddler is dead after a high-speed, rollover crash in Maplewood, and his mother, the alleged driver, now faces criminal charges.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday near Highways 36 and 61. The SUV ended up in a ditch where 1-year-old Revon Todd of St. Paul was found dead.

On Monday morning, yellow lines could be found on the southbound exit ramp from Highway 36 to Highway 61. The lines show where a speeding driver lost control and crashed into a watery ditch.

Her Chevy Tahoe rolled over several times and landed upside down in about two feet of water. Some people driving by stopped and tried to help everyone get out of the vehicle.

The 28-year-old woman who was driving the SUV made it out safely along with a 32-year-old man who was a passenger. Two of the driver’s boys, ages five and six, also survived. But investigators said her 1-year-old son died after he became trapped under the SUV.

“It’s terrible, it’s horrible. You don’t see a lot of accidents here on 61. But this coming off 36 here would be the spot. It’s a pretty tight angle there,” said Mike Rydel, who lives nearby.

State Patrol investigators said the driver was distraught at the scene and asking first responders to help her son. She told them she had been driving her boys to their grandmother’s, and she admitted to drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, but blamed the rain and bald tires for causing the crash, charging documents say.

Investigators said her blood alcohol concentration was more than twice the legal limit and they found small bottles of alcohol along the path the SUV took.

“I feel for the family, really. It’s horrible,” said Rydel.

The mother has been charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide.

Authorities suspect alcohol may have played a factor in a Maplewood, Minnesota, rollover crash that killed a 1-year-old boy Saturday evening.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened at approximately 6:25 p.m. on the eastbound Highway 36 ramp to southbound Highway 61.

A 28-year-old woman from St. Paul was driving a 2002 Chevy Tahoe at a high rate of speed when she appeared to lose control. The vehicle went off the roadway, rolled into the right ditch on the ramp and landed upside down, submerged in 1 to 2 feet of water, according to the crash report.

Authorities say a 1-year-old boy was extricated from underneath the vehicle but died on the scene.

The driver, a 5-year-old boy, a 6-year-old boy and a 32-year-old man were transported to Regions Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

After being cleared, the Minnesota State Patrol says the driver was booked in Ramsey County Jail for criminal vehicular homicide.

    The crash remains under investigation.

  • 8-year-old girl fights off armed robber at Maplewood liquor store using baseball bat

8-year-old girl fights off armed robber at Maplewood liquor store using baseball bat

    [ad_1]

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — It’s back to business after a big scare at Big Discount Liquors in Maplewood. An armed robber was beaten back by an 8-year-old girl and her baseball bat.

Thirty-seven-year-old Conchobhar Morrell, of St. Paul, was charged with first-degree attempted aggravated robbery in Ramsey County on Monday.

Charging documents state Morrell’s criminal record includes a 2004 conviction for first-degree aggravated robbery.

Surveillance video from the store shows Morrell wearing an Amazon uniform and reaching in his pocket before setting a realistic BB gun on the counter.

According to an Amazon spokesperson, Morrell was a delivery associate for a third-party delivery service delivering packages for Amazon. He will be “immediately offboarded.”

Store manager Leo says he was preparing to close the store around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when Morrell walked in and wandered through the store.

“He (Morrell) put the gun on the table, he asked me to give him all the money and everything in the register I told him yes—I’ll give you everything,” Leo said.

Behind the counter beside Leo was his 8-year-old daughter.

Leo said he tried to reason with Morrell and explain to him he could have all the money and that his only concern was his daughter’s safety.

Surveillance video shows Morrell walking behind the counter gun in hand.

“I’m a dad, I’m not going to let that happen,” Leo said.

Leo punches the man, wrestling him to the floor. Seconds later, you see his brave little girl with a bat in hand.

“I’m so proud of her she’s so strong,” Leo said.

His daughter hit the suspect a few times before running away. Leo said he didn’t even know she tried to help until he watched the surveillance video back.

“That day, I just wanted to cry. When I saw the video, I didn’t expect she’d do that. I expect a little girl crying, screaming,” Leo said.

Leo said he asked his daughter the next day what made her do that — she told him that she wanted to defend him and that she loved him so much.

It’s an incredible act of heroism from a little girl who saw her dad needed help.

As of Tuesday evening, Morrell is in custody and will be back in court Friday at 9 a.m.
