Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media Sets Aravind Adiga’s ‘Last Man in Tower’ as Hindi Debut, Unveils Five-Film Slate, Including Dulquer Salmaan’s ‘Kaantha’ (EXCLUSIVE)

“Baahubali” star Rana Daggubati‘s Spirit Media is making a leap into Hindi-language cinema with an adaptation of Booker winner Aravind Adiga’s acclaimed novel “Last Man in Tower,” starring Manoj Bajpayee and directed by Ben Rekhi.

The announcement comes as part of a five-film slate spanning the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi languages that the Hyderabad-based studio unveiled, just ahead of the release of its first home production, “Kaantha,” the Tamil period-noir drama thriller starring Dulquer Salmaan.

The untitled adaptation of “Last Man in Tower” marks a significant milestone for Spirit Media as it expands beyond South Indian cinema. The film delves into the moral compromises that accompany ambition, the fragility of human relationships under pressure and the shifting fabric of contemporary India.

“With ‘Kaantha’ releasing soon, I’m thrilled to announce Spirit’s Hindi production debut with the adaptation of ‘Last Man in Tower,’” said Daggubati, founder of Spirit Media. “Manoj Bajpayee has played so many iconic roles, and to partner with him on a story like this — we couldn’t have had a better team of collaborators to do our first Hindi film with.”

“With ‘Kaantha,’ the adaptation of ‘Last Man in Tower,’ and the other films we’re supporting in different capacities — have all given us a chance to partner with different creative teams — directors, writers and producers. Our goal remains to shape Spirit Media into a creative home for independent producers, a space that nurtures collaboration and storytelling across industries and languages.”

Bajpayee spoke to the weight of adapting such material. “When a book with such depth moves to screen, the responsibility is both meaningful and inspiring,” he said. “And with Rana Daggubati’s studio behind it, there is a strong sense of purpose and backing. Their belief in sincere storytelling gives the film the space and confidence it deserves. Working with Ben Rekhi has been a very rewarding experience.”

Director Rekhi praised the source material: “Aravind Adiga is one of the greatest writers of our generation, and once again he is ahead of his time. I’m so thrilled to have worked with such incredible collaborators to bring his brilliant book to life.”

The slate also includes “Kaantha,” set for release Nov. 14, which reunites Spirit Media with Dulquer Salmaan. “I heard the story of ‘Kaantha’ in 2019 and fell in love instantly,” Salmaan said. “It truly is a labour of love and one of the most special films in my career. The process of partnering with newer creative talent and Rana as a producer has been a really fulfilling experience.”

Rounding out the lineup are Telugu-language productions “Dark Chocolate,” a pulpy thriller dark-comedy co-produced with Waltair Productions; “Psyche Siddharth,” a debut feature that Spirit Media will present and distribute; and “Premante,” a love-comedy-thriller backed by the studio and debut producer Jhanvi Narang.

Spirit Media has positioned itself as a champion of independent cinema, recently backing Cannes winner “All We Imagine As Light” and Sundance winner “Cactus Pears” for theatrical distribution across India.

Founded in 2005, Spirit Media specializes in original content development and distribution, talent management and creative brand marketing services, with headquarters in Hyderabad.

The story traces Zende’s real-life encounters with the notorious criminal (inspired by Charles Sobhraj), first in 1971, and later in 1986, when Zende tracked him down in Goa after his infamous Tihar jail escape.

What makes the film stand out is its old-school charm. Instead of relying on technology and gadgets, Zende’s instincts and street-smart approach drive the story, blending crime, nostalgia, and a dash of humor.

What Works

Debut director Chinmay D. Mandlekar deserves full credit for recreating the Mumbai of yesteryears with authenticity. From gritty lanes to retro aesthetics, the film captures the city’s essence beautifully. What’s refreshing is how it avoids the usual larger-than-life cop tropes. Bajpayee’s Zende isn’t shouting slogans or basking in glory, his heroism lies in his humility and grounded approach.

The mix of suspense and lighthearted moments keeps the narrative engaging. Produced by Jay Shewakramani and Om Raut, Inspector Zende feels less like a typical crime drama and more like a smartly written thriller that celebrates sharp instincts.

What Doesn’t Work

While the film holds your attention, tighter editing could have made it sharper. A deeper look into Carl Bhojraj’s psyche or his transformation into the infamous ‘swimsuit killer’ would’ve added more menace to the character.

Exclusive: “Now I’m able to control my anger,” says Manoj Bajpayee | Filmfare.com

Manoj Bajpayee’s recently released film Bhaiyya Ji, directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, is his 100th film. In an exclusive chat with Filmfare, he speaks about the challenges of doing an action film, spending 30 years in the industry, and his never-give-up attitude.

After doing films like Ek Hi Banda Kaafi Hai, Killer Soup and Silence, how much fun was it to work in an action-based commercial film?

I’m really having fun. Also, I have been offered these kinds of films in the past, but somewhere the director’s intention was different, and I always waited for a director who had conviction in me and wanted to make a film for fun rather than just to make money. I had a story in my mind that I was in the middle of the road genre or looking to work in the independent film genre. Apoorva Singh Karki wanted to make this film with me. He said, “Sir, I have been watching Telugu and Tamil mainstream films since childhood and I want to make a similar film, and that too with you. If you do it, it will be an innovation.” Then I decided to just go and have fun, even if it meant risking my life.

What was the most challenging part of playing Bhaiyya Ji?

Action. Because acting is all about emotional challenges, but here it was more of a physical challenge. There were a lot of injuries, and we did not have many days or much money, but we still had to make it grand. We did not use many duplicates for the action scenes. Action Director S. Vijayan, a legend of the South, is a non-compromising action director. So, you have to forget the injuries, shoot every day, and finish it. It was such a big task. Any action film will be a cakewalk for me after the way action director Vijayan has trained me.

When you think about commercial cinema, what comes to your mind?

I don’t understand any other actor apart from Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Shatrughan Sinha. This is the effect of my growing years. It’s the right film to be my 100th film. Right? Because those were the films I watched growing up, and now my 100th film is similar, so yes, I am very happy.

Has your acting process changed over the years?

I am not the kind of actor who does only one genre of film. This is the most difficult thing. On one hand, I did Killer Soup and just before that, I had a release like Gulmohar. When you constantly change genres, it does not allow you to be content or to relax. In such a situation, you are learning, then unlearning, because by constantly changing genres, the acting process becomes different and there is no repetition.

30 years in the industry… So when you look back, what clicks in your mind?

My first shoot, with Seema Biswas for Bandit Queen. Whenever I meet Shekhar Kapur, I cannot believe that it has been so many years since we did that film. It is a very big thing for me that I have spent 30 years in this industry with all the failures, rejection, and a little bit of success. The only thing that kept me going was my never-give-up attitude. I always say that if you come here, decide that you will keep walking. No matter how much you fall, you will get up and keep moving.

There must have been some sacrifices to achieve success.

The only sacrifice I made was my time with my parents. I have never seen them growing old, and now they are no more. I have never stayed with them. I was in a hostel when I was a child, then I left for Delhi. And then from Delhi to Mumbai. My life in Mumbai was such that I could never call them because I knew that they would struggle here alone.

Do you regret doing any film in the past?

When I look back, I remember that I did some rubbish films in between which I should not have done. But then I did such films for money because the household needs to run. Some films I also did for friendship…

How have you changed as a person in the last few years?

I have calmed down quite a bit. Maybe because of my experience and also with age you keep calming down. Earlier, I used to get very angry, but spiritual practices helped me deal with anger management. This is only possible when you realise that something is wrong. Until you understand that it is wrong, you cannot work on it. I knew from my childhood that my anger hurts people. It offends them. Being angry also caused problems for me, and I suffered from it too. So, I worked on it and now I’m able to control my anger.

During a recent press conference, Bajpayee shared details on how he prepared himself for the “killer” role. He shared, “I used to be the first one to arrive on the set to get the prosthetics done for one character, Parmesh. So till lunch, you are doing Parmesh, after lunch, you are doing Umesh and in the evening you are doing you’re acting as Prabhakar. So there was no luxury of getting into the skin of the character.”

He further added, “There was no luxury of walking on it and remembering the arc of the character but rather every moment was very very challenging. I always say one thing you can ask the Al Pacinos of the world to come here and work and give an equally great performance that they are giving for so many years because our situation is really weak.”

With these statements coming from the seasoned actor, Killer Soup not only promises an intriguing storyline but also a stellar performance.

Why Manoj Bajpayee hasn’t had dinner in 14 years?

In a recent interview, Manoj Bajpayee also offered insights into his disciplined lifestyle. He revealed an unconventional choice that has defined his routine for the past 14 years — he doesn’t eat dinner. The Gangs of Wasseypur actor attributed this decision to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Manoj Bajpayee terms Anurag Kashyap as a ‘mad eccentric’ man revealing why he did not direct Shool

Anurag Kashyap has been making a lot of headlines, but not due to his film but for his unconventional behaviour and statements. Just a day ago, he claimed how he approached South Indian superstar Chiyaan Vikram for his film Kennedy, which is screened at the Oscars in 2023, and said how the Ponniyin Selvan star never got back to him. And immediately after this, Chiyyan Vikram mentioned that he himself called him, but there was no response, the filmmaker as massively trolled after this. And amid all these allegations, Manoj Bajpayee, who shares a strong bond with the filmmaker, called him a mad and eccentric man for not shooting Shool. Shool was written by Anurag Kashyap, and it is till date one of the best films of Manoj Bajpayee. Of late, Manoj, who has been promoting his latest release, Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai, spoke largely about Anurag and how he is still disappointed with him for not directing Shool. Calling him a mad and eccentric man for turning down the golden opportunity of directing the film, he spoke to a publication and said,” You will not find a more eccentric man. He had work; he was in charge; he’d written Shool, but he didn’t direct it. He’s stubborn, but more than stubborn, he’s mad.”.

When asked if Anurag wasn’t happy with the changes that were made in Shool and hence left the film, Bajpayee said,” No, that wasn’t the case. He was the writer; he could’ve directed it if he wanted to. But he had a script for a film called Paanch. You will all know that he is a ‘dimaag ka tedha aadmi (slightly eccentric man)’. In one of his interviews, Anurag mentioned that he wasn’t happy with the last-minute changes in the script made by the producer of the film, and hence he left it. Manoj and Anurag have worked together in Gangs of Wasseypur, and till date, it is counted as one of the best films of Anurag Kashyap.

The actor mentioned that he was in slippers and somehow they managed to arrange shoes.
