NH authorities name 3 officers involved in deadly Manchester police shooting
Authorities in New Hampshire have named the three Manchester police officers who fired their weapons in a deadly shooting earlier this month.
The police shooting, which followed a pursuit on Dec. 6, killed 24-year-old Nickenley Turenne of Manchester.
The office of New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said Tuesday that Brandon Baliko, Andre Chan and Devin Lambert — all officers with the Manchester Police Department — discharged their firearms.
The AG’s office previously said the situation started when police responded to the area of South Mammoth Road in Manchester for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Inside, police found a man — later identified as Turenne — asleep at the wheel and a woman asleep in the passenger seat. When the man woke up, police say he sped off.
Officers gave chase, with the vehicle eventually crashing and the man taking off on foot.
Police pursued him on foot, which led to a confrontation in the area of 293 South Mammoth Road.
Life-saving measures were attempted after the shooting, but Turenne died at the hospital. An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death was homicide.
Formella’s office said Baliko has served with the Manchester Police Department for about a year, Chan for about a year-and-a-half, and Lambert for nearly two years.
All three officers are cooperating with the investigation, according to the attorney general’s office.
The case remains under investigation as authorities seek to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.

Lowell man arrested after pursuit, accused of ramming police cruiser with truck
MANCHESTER, N.H. — A Lowell man is facing a pile of charges after an early-morning pursuit that topped 100 mph ended with him ramming a State Police cruiser with his pickup truck when cornered in Manchester.
Alejandro Vargas, 27, was captured by police after the alleged vehicle pursuit turned into a foot pursuit following the crash. According to the New Hampshire State Police, it was later determined that Vargas had an outstanding U.S. Marshals warrant.
The incident began at about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, when the State Police said they received reports that Epping police officers had briefly pursued a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado on Route 101 westbound. Shortly afterward, members of the Candia Police spotted the pickup truck, which was allegedly clocked traveling at 105 mph.
Police said Trooper Brian Knell observed the truck as it entered Interstate 93 South in Manchester. He caught up with the vehicle at Exit 1 on Interstate 293 North and attempted a traffic stop, which the driver — later identified as Vargas — allegedly ignored.
The pursuit that ensued continued onto Exit 4 of I-293, where the truck turned onto Arnold Street, which is a dead end. Vargas is alleged to have turned the vehicle around and struck a State Police cruiser driven by Trooper Brian Taylor.
Police said the truck then crashed into two additional parked vehicles before Vargas and a passenger jumped out of the truck and fled on foot in opposite directions.
Manchester police officers arrived with a drone and spotted Vargas running south near Hill Street, less than a half-mile from the crash scene. Officers quickly tracked him down and took him into custody.
The passenger, meanwhile, was not located.
Vargas is charged with felony reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, along with misdemeanor counts of disobeying an officer, resisting arrest, simple assault, and conduct after an accident, in addition to several violations.
Details of Vargas’ U.S. Marshals warrant were not immediately available, nor was the outcome of his arraignment, which was scheduled to take place in Manchester District Court on Wednesday.

Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry has opened up on his plans for free agency in 2027 after admitting situations change “really fast” in the NBA.
The prospect of Curry, a two-time league MVP and 11-time All-Star, playing for any franchise other than The Dubs is a strange one.
After being drafted with the seventh overall pick in 2009, Curry has gone on to revolutionise the game of basketball, helping himself to four championships, one finals MVP and the NBA record for most three-pointers made with 4,058 to add to his overall tally of 25,386 points.
All while wearing No 30 for the Warriors.

Curry signed a one-year extension with the team in 2024, worth a reported £47.5m ($62.6m) and ending growing speculation around his future in the process, keeping him in San Francisco until 2027.
Two years from now, when that deal expires, the greatest shooter of all time will be 39.
After averaging just under 25 points, six assists, and over four rebounds in his 16th season, as well as longevity being more prominent than ever in the league, it is clear to see that his time in the NBA is far from over.
But could the next chapter in his illustrious career lie away from Chase Center? Do not rule it out.
“What I have learned about this league is that things change really fast,” Curry told Sky Sports while discussing Underrated Golf, a programme set up by the point guard to break down barriers to entry and increase diversity in the game of golf.
Underrated Golf is an initiative led by Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry to create a pathway into the sport for young athletes from underrepresented communities.
The programme aims to break down barriers in the game of golf to give prospects a level playing field, in a bid to create a more inclusive and accessible environment for young golfers.
“What you might feel like in two years from now could be totally different. I try to stay in the moment as much as possible; it’s not the glitziest answer but it allows me to enjoy what is happening now.
“I do want to play for only one team, let’s keep that pretty clear. Being at the Warriors has been unbelievable and I feel blessed to have only played for one franchise and to have accomplished what we have.
“So if I could have the best of both worlds and continue to be championship relevant over the next couple of years, that would be great but this league is wild. You kind of just stay in the moment.”
Despite a decision on his future looming as we approach 2027, Curry’s full focus remains on securing more success with the team he holds so dear to his heart in the upcoming 2025/26 season.
The arrival of six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler in February has shown early signs of promise after the Warriors reached the Western Conference semi-finals last time out, only to be denied the opportunity to show their title-winning credentials following a Grade 1 hamstring strain for Curry in game one against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A 4-1 defeat in the series would follow but heading into 2025/26, the roster has been bolstered by a new two-year deal for Jonathan Kuminga, as well as the arrival of 2024 NBA champion Al Horford,to run alongside long-term teammate Draymond Green in the frontcourt.

With Curry now back to full fitness and fresh depth surrounding him, the intentions from the Warriors have been clear from pre-season.
The Dubs are 3-1 in games Curry has featured in, beating the Los Angeles Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers twice, with attention now turning to the season opener against the Lakers on October 21, live on Sky Sports.
When asked what aspects of the game still motivate a player who has already achieved so much in the sport as we approach a new 82-game season, Curry added: “I talk about championships, and that drive – it allows every part of the journey to matter.
“Even in the off-season, how you prepare for the year, come in and try and build chemistry with your teammates and how you get through the emotional rollercoaster of an 82-game season.
“All of that is built into being at your peak come playoff time in April.

“Individual accolades take care of themselves. When you win, everybody is rewarded. As long as I’m taking care of championship motivation, everything else takes care of itself. Whether you win or not, you just lay it all out there.
“We have a brand new team again. We’ll all try and stay healthy and try and get to the finish line. That’s our goal.”
The Warriors have won seven championships in total across their 78-year history, with Curry leading them to more than half of that total.
If the franchise is to add an eighth banner to the rafters in 2026, their point guard will be the man to lead them there.
His powers at the highest level are showing no signs are waning, with the 37-year-old looking to replicate the successes of the likes of LeBron James and Kevin Durant by “redefining” what it is to be playing at a high level towards the latter stages of their respective careers.
“I feel like I’ve got some good basketball ahead of me. I’m trying to redefine what it is to be playing at a high level at this age,” said Curry when the question of his timeline leading the roster was posed.
“I still love the work that goes into it and playing the game; hopefully, that will carry me. I don’t want to put any limits on it.”

British police arrest 6 after deadly Manchester synagogue attack
Police on Saturday were questioning six people arrested on suspicion of terror offenses after an attack on a synagogue in northwest England that left two men dead and Britain’s Jewish community shocked and grieving.
Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, was shot dead by police on Thursday outside the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue in Manchester after he rammed a car into pedestrians, attacked them with a knife and tried to force his way into the building.
Three men and three women, aged between 18 and their 60s, were arrested in the greater Manchester area on suspicion of the “commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism,” as police work to determine whether the attacker acted alone.
Congregation members Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, died in the attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. Police say Daulby was accidentally shot by an armed officer as he and other congregants barricaded the synagogue to block Al-Shamie from entering. Three other men are hospitalized with serious injuries.
Detectives say Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian origin who lived in Manchester, may have been influenced by “extreme Islamist ideology.” He wore what appeared to be an explosives belt, which was found to be fake.
Police said Al-Shamie was out on bail over an alleged rape at the time of the attack but had not been charged.

The attack has devastated Britain’s Jewish community and intensified debate about the line between criticism of Israel and antisemitism.
Recorded antisemitic incidents in the U.K. have risen sharply since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and Israel’s ensuing war against Hamas in Gaza, according to Community Security Trust, a charity that provides advice and protection for British Jews.
Some politicians and religious leaders claimed pro-Palestinian demonstrations, which have been held regularly since the war in Gaza began, had played a role in spreading hatred of Jews. The protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful but some say chants such as “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” incite anti-Jewish hatred.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters have frequently accused critics of Israel for its conduct of the war of antisemitism. Critics see it as an attempt to stifle even legitimate criticism.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the head of Orthodox Judaism in Britain, said the attack was the result of “an unrelenting wave of Jew hatred” on the streets and online.

Some also say the U.K.’s recognition of a Palestinian state last month has emboldened antisemitism — a claim the government rejects. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was interrupted by boos and shouts of “Shame on you” on Friday as he addressed a vigil for victims of the attack in Manchester.
Police in London urged organizers to call off a protest planned for Saturday to oppose the banning of the group Palestine Action, which has been labeled a terrorist organization by the government.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said protest organizers should “recognize and respect the grief of British Jews this week” and postpone the demonstration.
The group Defend Our Juries said it would not cancel the protest, where hundreds of people are expected to risk arrest by holding signs supporting the banned group.
Member Jonathon Porritt said protesters would “demonstrate huge respect and real grief for those affected by the absolute atrocity at Heaton Park.”
“But I don’t think that means that we should be asked to give up on our right to stand up for those who are being devastated by an ongoing, real-time genocide in Gaza,” he told the BBC.

Manchester synagogue attack victim possibly killed by officer’s gunshot, police say
London – One of the two people killed in Thursday’s terrorist attack outside a synagogue in the northern English city of Manchester may have died of a gunshot fired by a police officer, the Greater Manchester Police said Friday. Two Jewish men, identified by police as Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, were killed and three others were seriously wounded during the attack, which happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar.
Both of the victims were local residents.
A government pathologist advised the police “that he has provisionally determined that one of the deceased victims would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury,” Stephen Watson, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police force, said in a statement Friday.
“It is currently believed that the suspect, Jihad Al Shamie, was not in possession of a firearm,” Watson said. “It follows therefore, that subject to further forensic examination, this injury may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the urgently required action taken by my officers to bring this vicious attack to an end.”

“We have also been advised by medical professionals that one of the three victims currently receiving treatment in hospital, has also suffered a gunshot wound, which is mercifully not life threatening,” Watson added.
Police officers shot and killed the suspect, who investigators believed to be 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent, following a vehicle and stabbing attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Thursday morning.
Officers were called to the synagogue at about 9.30 a.m. local time (4:30 a.m. ET) by a member of the public who said he’d seen a car being driven toward members of the public.
The police said Thursday that the attacker drove directly at people outside the synagogue and then attacked people with a knife. The attack happened while a large group of worshippers was inside the synagogue, but the suspect did not manage to enter the building.
In his statement on Friday, Watson said the only shots fired during the incident were fired by police “as they worked to prevent the offender from entering the synagogue and causing further harm to our Jewish community.”
The attacker wore a vest that looked like it could contain explosives, but police later confirmed that there were no viable explosives found.

The police said Thursday night that three other individuals had been arrested “on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism” in connection with the attack, whom the force identified only as “two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s.”
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the scene of the attack Friday with his wife, speaking with police and other officials outside the synagogue.
In a social media post on Thursday night, Starmer called the attack “a vile terrorist attack that attacked Jews, because they are Jews.”
“Antisemitism is a hatred that is rising, once again. Britain must defeat it, once again. To every Jewish person in this country: I promise that I will do everything in my power to guarantee you the security you deserve,” he said.

U.K. Officers Killed Victim in Synagogue Attack by Accident, Police Believe
LONDON—One of those killed and one injured in Thursday’s terrorist attack in Manchester were hit by gunfire from police who were trying to stop the attacker from entering a crowded synagogue, police said Friday.
“One of the deceased victims would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury,” the Greater Manchester Police said. “It is currently believed that the suspect, Jihad Al Shamie, was not in possession of a firearm and the only shots fired were from GMP’s Authorised Firearms Officers.”
