    Two men were killed and a woman was wounded in a Stockton shooting on Sunday, police said.

    Stockton police said officers responded around noon to a report of a shooting in the 2500 block of South El Dorado Street.

    The two men were found dead and the woman, in her fifties, had a non-life-threatening injury, police said.

    The Stockton Flea Market is located at 2542 South El Dorado Street, but police said they would not confirm the exact address of the shooting due to police victim confidentiality.

    A boutique owner told KCRA 3’s Denzen Cortez that the shooting stemmed from a robbery, though the police department has not confirmed that as of Sunday evening.

    “I saw one running, and he had the gun on him and [was] pointing, so I threw myself on the floor,” Salvador Cervantes, the jewelry store owner who was robbed, told KCRA.

    Cervantes said this has not been the first time his store has been targeted. Back in 2012, his father, Ignacio Cervantes, was killed in a similar robbery.

    Stockton police said a motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

    The Stockton Flea Market features more than 300 vendors and is the oldest and largest family-owned flea market in San Joaquin County, according to Visit Stockton. It’s open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Suspected Santee bank robber nabbed at Mexico border

    A man suspected of robbing a Santee bank this week was behind bars Friday following his arrest at the U.S.-Mexico border.

    The 31-year-old suspect allegedly handed a teller a note demanding cash at the Chase Bank on Town Center Parkway shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

    Detectives identified him as the suspected robber through surveillance camera images and prior law enforcement contacts, Sgt. Justin Crews said.

    The suspect was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday as he attempted to cross at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. He was booked into at San Diego Central Jail, where he was being held on $100,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

    Officials did not disclose how much money was stolen during the heist.

    A man accused of ambushing and fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend has been extradited to Orange County to face a murder charge after eight years on the run in Mexico, authorities said.

    Humberto Rodriguez Martinez, 39, is accused of working with a friend to kill his romantic rival outside his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in 2017, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office. Martinez is a Mexican citizen and was in the U.S. illegally at the time of the killing, prosecutors said.

    Prosecutors charged Martinez in 2017 with the murder of 32-year-old Daniel Reyes, as well as with felony enhancements for allegedly lying in wait and for using a knife. But for years police were unable to arrest him.

    Martinez’s car was recovered in San Diego, while he remained wanted on a $2-million warrant.

    His friend, Adan Zapot-Leyva, was arrested two days after the attack and later sentenced to 15 years to life after pleading guilty in 2023 to one felony count of second-degree murder.

    Mexican authorities, working with the U.S. Marshals Service, tracked down Martinez in 2024 in Mexico, where he was arrested at the request of the U.S.

    On Dec. 4, he was extradited to the U.S. and homicide detectives from the Anaheim Police Department took him into custody at Los Angeles International Airport. He pleaded not guilty to murder on Tuesday and is being held without bail.

    “This arrest does not undo the pain the victim’s family has endured, but it reinforces our commitment and promise to our community: We will never stop working until justice is served,” Anaheim Police Chief Manny Cid said in a statement.

    Prosecutors accuse Martinez of carrying out a deliberate, jealousy-driven murder plot.

    Martinez shared two children with his ex-girlfriend and they were co-parenting for several months after they broke up. On Oct. 17, 2017, Martinez and Zapot-Leyva went to the woman’s apartment to watch the children while she went to work, prosecutors said.

    She returned home around 8:30 p.m. and the men left the apartment. About 30 minutes later, her new boyfriend arrived, prosecutors said.

    Early the following morning, Anaheim police officers responded to the intersection of Santa Ana and Helena streets after witnesses reported seeing two men chasing Reyes and one of them stabbing him. Reyes died at the scene.

    Zapot-Leyva later told authorities that he and Martinez had watched the apartment for several hours because they knew that Reyes was inside, according to his 2023 plea agreement obtained by City News Service.

    The ex-girlfriend had called Zapot-Leyva to ask where he and Martinez were and, in a “deliberate trick,” Zapot-Leyva told her they had left the area hours ago, according to the plea agreement. The goal was to fool Reyes into thinking it was safe to exit the apartment.

    Once he did emerge, the men chased him down and attacked him, and Martinez stabbed him 10 times, Zapot-Leyva told authorities, according to the plea deal.

    Reyes begged them to stop, saying “please don’t … I have children,” according to the plea deal.

    “The pursuit of justice will never be derailed by time or distance,” O.C. Dist. Atty. Todd Spitzer said in a statement Friday. “We are grateful for the incredible work of our investigators and prosecutors and of our partners, both domestic and international, for their assistance in tracking down a wanted [murder suspect] and bringing him back to Orange County.”

  • Garden Grove police officer hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle while responding to call

    A Garden Grove Police officer was in the hospital in critical but stable condition Sunday after being hit by a vehicle while responding to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Police Department.

    Shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, officers were in the area of Brookhurst Street and Stanford Avenue investigating a report of a man threatening people with a knife at a small commercial strip mall, according to Sgt. Nick Jensen, a public information officer.

    Police arrived, and as they attempted to arrest him, he took off running and there was a pursuit on foot. The officer was then struck by a vehicle.

    Anaheim, Orange and Westminster police were part of the response, according to post on Instagram by Garden Grove police.

    The suspect was arrested and has been charged with several felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats. Jensen identified him as Lonnie Johnson, 34, with no permanent address.

    Police were not yet releasing the name of the injured officer, as relatives were being notified.

    The driver of the vehicle that hit the officer stayed on the scene and cooperated with police, Jensen said. He was not arrested.

  • Gunman dies after being shot by off-duty ICE agent; LAPD investigating

    A New Year’s Eve confrontation between an off-duty ICE officer and a man who was firing a gun at an apartment complex has left the gunman dead and prompted an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

    “On December, 31st, an off duty ICE Officer bravely responded to an active shooter situation at his apartment complex. In order to protect his life and that of others, he was forced to defensively use his weapon and exchanged gunfire with the shooter,” read an emailed statement from Tricia McLaughlin, the department’s assistant secretary of public affairs. “Fortunately, our brave officer was not injured while protecting his community.”

    The Homeland Security statement said the ICE officer contacted police following the incident.

    “This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the LAPD, and we refer any further questions to them,” the statement said.

    According to a City News Service report, police responded to the Valley Pointe Apartments complex at Roscoe Boulevard and Amestoy Avenue in Northridge at 11:37 p.m. Wednesday. The news service quoted an unnamed LAPD officer as saying the man who was killed was firing an assault rifle into the air. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Video taken at the scene by KTLA News showed a white privacy canopy set up on a walkway at the apartments to shield view of the body.

    Neither the identity of the dead man nor the ICE officer has been released and no arrests were reported.

  • Man killed by falling tree during storm in City Heights ID’d by M.E.

     A man who was killed when a tree fell on him in City Heights amid stormy conditions on Christmas Eve has been publicly identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

    Roberto Ruiz Salmeron, 61, of San Diego, was standing on a sidewalk near his home on the corner of Marlborough Avenue and Wightman Street when a branch broke away and fell on him, the M.E.’s Office stated.

    San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Jason Shanley said Wednesday that police and fire personnel were able to pull him out from under the tree and provide medical aid, “but he succumbed to his injuries.”

    The victim was pronounced dead at 11:14 a.m., according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

    A GoFundMe page created on behalf of Ruiz Salmeron’s family states that he was walking to his car when he was fatally struck by a branch that was over 30 feet long.

    “Our entire family is devastated, and the holidays won’t ever be the same without him. He definitely knew how to brighten the day with jokes and humor. We had gifts under the tree he won’t ever get to open,” according to the page, which identifies Ruiz Salmeron as “a loving father, husband, grandfather and a hardworking welder among many other things.”

    The fatality happened amid high winds that Shanley said had contributed to other trees coming down around the city.

    The storm, which was expected to abate this weekend, also brought heavy rainfall to the region and caused power outages that deprived electricity to as many as 10,000 customers across San Diego County stretching from Del Mar to Chula Vista.

    Before Chase Lovell ever ran a race, spoke a word of English or had a cheering family in the stands, he had a bracelet.Leather, worn, with a single thread. It was given to him in a Chinese orphanage by the man who first taught him how to walk. A previous adoption had fallen through, and he was months away from aging out of the system. But the Lovells refused to give up. “We really had to advocate and say we want him.     Police have identified a person they believe is connected to the mass shooting at Brown University and the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor in Brookline, Massachusetts, earlier this week, sources tell Boston sister station WCVB.Multiple media outlets, including CNN, ABC News, and CBS News, have reported that a search warrant for an individual has been signed and that investigators are actively seeking that person.     Truckee police are actively searching for the suspect, releasing a photo of the man seen in the neighborhood on Deerfield Drive multiple times before the shooting.

    Krautstrunk described the suspect as appearing unashamed and possibly planning to return.

    “He looks proud. You know, he doesn’t look too ashamed of what he did. And that’s what’s so scary about it. It doesn’t look like he’s not coming back, you know,” Krautstrunk said.

    The suspect was seen in the neighborhood on multiple occasions, carrying a box believed to contain a gun, as shown in home surveillance video shared with KCRA.

    “There’s no resting until this guy is found,” Krautstrunk said, pleading for the community’s help. “I’m begging, you know, whoever can help find this guy… It’s hard having to just be on guard all the time, you know? It’s like I never feel safe.”

  • Commentary: Trump’s callous political attack on Rob Reiner shows a shameful moral failure

    Hours after Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead in their home in what is shaping up to be a heartbreaking family tragedy, our president blamed Reiner for his own death.

    “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS,” President Trump wrote on his social media platform. “He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

    Then, in the Oval Office, Trump doubled down on Reiner.

    “He was a deranged person,” Trump said in response to a reporter’s question about his social media post. “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”

    Rest in peace, indeed.

    It’s a message steeped in cruelty and delusion, unbelievable and despicable even by the low, buried-in-the-dirt bar by which we have collectively come to judge Trump. In a town — and a time — of selfishness and self-serving, Reiner was one of the good guys, always fighting, both through his films and his politics, to make the world kinder and closer. And yes, that meant fighting against Trump and his increasingly erratic and authoritarian rule.

    For years, Reiner made the politics of inclusion and decency central to his life. He was a key player in overturning California’s ban on same-sex marriage and fought to expand early childhood education.

    For the last few months, he was laser-focused on the upcoming midterms as the last and best chance of protecting American democracy — which clearly enraged Trump.

    “Make no mistake, we have a year before this country becomes a full on autocracy,” Reiner told MSNBC host Ali Velshi in October. “People care about their pocketbook issues, the price of eggs. They care about their healthcare, and they should. Those are the things that directly affect them. But if they lose their democracy, all of these rights, the freedom of speech, the freedom to pray the way you want, the freedom to protest and not go to jail, not be sent out of the country with no due process, all these things will be taken away from them.”

    The Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Nick Reiner has struggled with addiction, and been in and out of rehab. But Trump seems to be saying that if Nick is indeed the perpetrator, he acted for pro-Trump political reasons — which obviously is highly unlikely and, well, just a weird and unhinged thing to claim.

    But also, deeply hypocritical.

    It was only a few months ago, in September, that Charlie Kirk was killed and Trump and his MAGA regime went nuts over anyone who dared whisper a critical word about Kirk. Trump called it “sick” and “deranged” that anyone could celebrate Kirk’s death, and blamed the “radical left” for violence-inciting rhetoric.

    Vice President JD Vance, channeling his inner Scarlett O’Hara, vowed “with God as my witness,” he would use the full power of the state to crack down on political “networks” deemed terrorist. In reality, he’s largely just using the state to target people who oppose Trump out loud.

    And just in case you thought maybe, maybe our president somehow really does have the good of all Americans at heart, recall that in speaking of Kirk, Trump said that he had one point of disagreement. Kirk, he claimed, forgave his enemies.

    “That’s where I disagreed with Charlie,” Trump said. “I hate my opponent and I don’t want the best for them.”

    There’s a malevolence so deep in Trump’s remarks about Reiner that even Marjorie Taylor Greene objected. She was once Trump’s staunchest supporter before he called her a traitor, empowering his goon squad to terrorize her with death threats.

    “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” Greene wrote on social media. “Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”

    But Trump has made cruelty the point. His need to dehumanize everyone who opposes him, including Reiner and even Greene, is exactly what Reiner was warning us about.

    Because when you allow people to be dehumanized, you stop caring about them — and Reiner was not about to let us stop caring.

    He saw the world with an artist’s eye and a warrior’s heart, a mighty combination reflected in his films. He challenged us to believe in true love, to set aside our cynicism, to be both silly and brave, knowing both were crucial to a successful life.

    This clarity from a man who commanded not just our attention and our respect, but our hearts, is what drove Trump crazy — and what made Reiner such a powerful threat to him. Republican or Democrat, his movies reminded us of what we hold in common.

    But it might be Michael Douglas’ speech in 1995’s “The American President” that is most relevant in this moment. Douglas’ character, President Andrew Shepherd, says that “America is advanced citizenship. You’ve got to want it bad, because it’s going to put up a fight.”

    Shepherd’s rival, a man pursuing power over purpose, “is interested in two things and two things only — making you afraid of ‘it’ and telling you who’s to blame for ‘it.’ ”

    Sound familiar?

    That our president felt the need to trash Reiner before his body is even buried would be a badge of honor to Reiner, an acknowledgment that Reiner’s warnings carried weight, and that Reiner was a messenger to be reckoned with.

    Reiner knew what advanced citizenship meant, and he wanted badly for democracy to survive.

    If Trump’s eulogy sickens you the way it sickens me, then here’s what you can do about it: Vote in November in Reiner’s memory.

    Your ballot is the rebuke Trump fears most.

    And your vote is the most powerful way to honor a man who dedicated his life to reminding us that bravery is having the audacity to care.

    Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called Reiner’s death a devastating loss for the city.

    “Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” Bass said in a statement. “An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.”

    The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner was married to photographer Michele Singer Reiner since 1989. The two met while he was directing “When Harry Met Sally” and have three children together.

    Reiner was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner died in 2020 at age 98 and Marshall died in 2018.

    Killings are rare in the Brentwood neighborhood. The scene is about a mile from the home where O.J. Simpson’s wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were killed in 1994.

    A Sacramento man was arrested for homicide in connection with another man’s death along Broadway earlier this month, the Sacramento Police Department said.On Dec. 2, officers responded to a report of a person down in the roadway just after 4:30 a.m. and found the man at the intersection of Broadway and Stockton Boulevard with life-threatening injuries.
