  • NC man with shotgun fatally shot by Secret Service at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort

    [ad_1]

An armed North Carolina man was shot and killed by law enforcement Sunday after driving into the secured perimeter of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, authorities say.

The man was in his early 20s and had a gas can and shotgun with him, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said in a news briefing Sunday morning.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who often spend weekends at Mar-a-Lago, were at the White House on Sunday, Secret Service officials said.

A Moore County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson identified the man as Austin Tucker Martin, 21, of Cameron, North Carolina.

Martin’s family had posted a flyer on social media Saturday in an attempt to find him. He was last seen around 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the flyer.

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office said a relative of Martin’s approached a deputy at a local business around 1:38 a.m. Sunday to report Martin missing. Martin’s name was entered into a national missing person database, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Federal authorities also got in touch with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, which turned over all information about the case to the federal agencies investigating the incident, the release said. Martin did not have any prior contact with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, it said, and the agency is not involved in the federal investigation.

The release directed all other questions to the FBI Miami Field Office and the U.S. Secret Service.

Federal officials have said Martin entered the Mar-a-Lago grounds through the north gate around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He was confronted by two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy, Bradshaw said. They shot and killed Martin, he said.

“He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with them. At which time, he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” Bradshaw said at a brief press conference. The agents and the deputy “fired their weapons and neutralized the threat.”

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were at the White House when a man was shot and killed Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, after driving into the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Secret Service officials said.

No motive yet for Martin, an artist

Martin was a 2023 graduate of Union Pines High School, who registered to vote as unaffiliated in 2022, state records show. He was an illustrator, specializing in landscapes and works featuring golf courses, according to his Instagram page.

His 23-year-old sister, Caitlin Martin, was killed in a 2023 car crash. According to her obituary, he is survived by his parents and a brother.

Brandon Huneycutt, head golf professional at the Quail Ridge Golf Course in Sanford, said he briefly met Martin several months ago, when Martin asked if he could “go onto some of the holes to try to get a vision … before he drew it.” They gave him a golf cart, so he could help himself, Huneycutt said.

“I guess he took pictures of them, and he went home and actually hand-drew the pictures. They’re pretty good pieces,” Huneycutt said. They still have framed photos of some of the drawings at the course, he said.

Investigators think Martin picked up the shotgun as he headed south to Florida, according to Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service.

A box for the weapon was found in the vehicle after the incident, he said.

The agents have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, Guglielmi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

No law enforcement officers were injured, said Special Agent in Charge Rafael Barros, with the Secret Service’s Miami field office.

The FBI is assisting with the investigation, officials said. No motive has been announced.

    Previous Trump assassination attempts

Trump has faced threats before, including an assassination attempt during a July 2024 campaign stop in Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman in that attempt was shot and killed.

In September 2024, Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, was arrested in a second attempted assassination. Routh, a North Carolina native, was found hiding with what appeared to be an AK 47-style rifle in the shrubbery outside a fence at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

He was sentenced Feb. 4 to life in prison.

  • Teen stepson charged with murder after decapitation, stabbing of man on Staten Island

    [ad_1]

WEST BRIGHTON, Staten Island (WABC) — A 19-year-old man is facing charges after his 45-year-old stepfather was found stabbed to death on Staten Island.

Damien Hurstel is charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Officials say police received a call for a person stabbed at 380 Cary Ave. in the West Brighton section just before 4:30 p.m. Monday.

When officers arrived, they discovered the 45-year-old victim in the bathtub with multiple stab wounds to his head and neck.

The victim was pronounced dead. Police identified him as 45-year-old Anthony Casalaspro.

“This whole world is upside down. This is like a terrible, horrible, to do this to a person you know not even to an animal, you don’t do that,” a neighbor said.

That’s when Hurstel was taken into custody.

Police say the stepson’s sister walked into the home around 4 p.m. and found blood in rooms throughout the home. She then discovered the victim in the bathtub.

According to police sources, the victim wasn’t just stabbed, but decapitated, with the knife still in the body of the victim when police arrived on the scene

They say it’s unclear what led to the violent stabbing. Hurstel has no prior arrests.

Hugh Nembhard told Eyewitness News that he has lived across the street for some 60 years.

“I’m not familiar with the stepson. I never saw him. I saw the father, but never the stepson,” he said. “I don’t know what to make of it. I don’t know what to make of this. This is a shock to me. The neighborhood has changed.”

Police said Hurstel may have a history of mental illness.

    The investigation is ongoing.

OC man arrested in fatal stabbing at Dave’s Hot Chicken in Long Beach

    [ad_1]

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — A suspect has been arrested in Sunday’s fatal stabbing at a restaurant in Long Beach, police announced Monday night.

The stabbing was reported around 1 a.m. Sunday at Dave’s Hot Chicken on 2nd Street and Covina Avenue. Officers found a 20-year-old Long Beach man with a stab wound to his upper body at the scene and he later was pronounced dead at the hospital. His name has not been released pending identification by the coroner’s office.

Details about what led up to the stabbing were unclear, but authorities say the preliminary investigation suggests there was a physical altercation between the victim and suspect. During that altercation, the suspect stabbed the victim and ran from the scene.

Detectives interviewed witnesses and obtained surveillance video in the area which led them to identify Brandon Nguyen, 29, of Huntington Beach as the suspect. They found and arrested him at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday. He was booked for murder and was being held without bail. A search warrant was also served on his home.

The video in the player above is from our initial report on the stabbing.

The case will be submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of filing charges later this week.

“We will not tolerate acts of violence in our community and we will commit all available resources to ensuring that those responsible for crimes like this are held accountable,” said Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish. “Within a matter of minutes, our officers were there to render medical aid and secure the scene. In addition, Homicide detectives responded to the scene and worked around the clock with our Special Investigations Division to identify, locate, and safely apprehend the person believed responsible for this crime.”

  • Argument on SEPTA bus leads to deadly Philadelphia shooting in Oxford Circle, police say

Argument on SEPTA bus leads to deadly Philadelphia shooting in Oxford Circle, police say

    [ad_1]

PHILADLEPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police have identified the man who was shot to death following an argument on a SEPTA bus Sunday night in the city’s Oxford Circle neighborhood.

The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Sawee Kofa, of the 800 block of Fanshawe Street, according to police.

SEPTA Transit Police said the suspect shot Kofa after both of them got off of the Route 59 bus at the intersection of Castor Avenue and Comly Street at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Philadelphia police investigators said the victim was found two streets over at Castor and Van Kirk.

“Our victim got off and the suspect came out right behind him,” said Captain Anthony Ginaldi, with the Philadelphia Police Department. “There was an exchange of words out there as well, as they were getting off the bus and the suspect produced a handgun and shot our victim at least twice that we know of.”

Police said multiple 911 calls came in about the shooting out in front of the Burger King at that intersection.

Police and medics found Kofa dead on the street after they said the suspect shot him in the face and chest.

The suspect ran off after shooting the victim, investigators said.

Police believe the men initially got on the SEPTA bus at the Arrott Transportation Center in the city’s Frankford section.

Shortly after the shooting, police were able to stop the SEPTA bus down the street at Castor & Magee Avenues.

They’re working to gather evidence at two scenes, including the shooting on the street and inside the bus itself.

“The inside of the bus is considered a scene because our victim and our suspect were on the bus so there’s going to be evidence inside that bus of the victim and suspect,” Ginaldi said.

SEPTA transit police are sharing video with Philadelphia police, according to SEPTA officials, and said that based off of surveillance video there did not appear to be a confrontation.

However, Philadelphia police said witnesses told them there was an exchange of words on the bus.

Investigators have not yet released a description of the suspect.

An investigation is underway into how a man working at a Georgia lumber plant ended up in its wood chipper, according to investigators.

The victim was identified as 63-year-old Ralph Pickens of McCormick, South Carolina, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia told McClatchy News.

He died on the job at Pollard Lumber Company in Appling, Georgia, 20 miles northwest of Augusta. The incident happened the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 5, The Augusta Chronicle reports.

Investigators say Pickens died after entering “an industrial conveyor wood chipper” at the plant, which manufactures southern yellow pine for wholesale.

Details of how Pickens got onto the conveyor belt have not been released.

His home in McCormick is about 30 miles north of the plant, across the state line.

Conveyor wood chippers come in various forms, but are designed to feed wood into a machine that breaks it into pieces. The wood typically rides atop a conveyor belt before dropping into the machinery.

Officials release new surveillance video of deadly Philadelphia police-involved shooting

    [ad_1]

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Officials released new surveillance video Tuesday from last week’s deadly police-involved shooting that injured an officer and left a man dead in North Philadelphia.

Philadelphia police and the district attorney’s office partnered to release the video, sharing two angles from inside the store.

WATCH: Full surveillance video of deadly Philadelphia police-involved shooting

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT – VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED

Police release new surveillance video from Friday’s deadly police-involved shooting that left an officer injured and one man dead.

“Today is the day for the public to see the truth about what it is that is visible and occurred inside of the store,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said during Tuesday’s press conference.

“I want to acknowledge my officers who were involved in a difficult and life-threatening situation,” said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, noting that the department remains extremely limited in the type of information they can release at this time.

The shooting happened on January 26 inside Jennifer Tavern on the corner of N. Mascher and W. Cambria streets.

Alexander Spencer, 28, was shot and killed during a scuffle with police. During that scuffle, officials say Spencer fired a shot, hitting one of the officers in the leg. This prompted the injured officer’s partner to return fire, according to police.

The officer who fired the shot has been identified as 33-year-old Ofc. Raheem Hall of the 24th Police District. He is a 6-year veteran of the force.

The officers were on routine patrol in the area while also keeping an eye out for a person wanted in a recent non-fatal shooting, Bethel said.

In the newly released video, one of the officers walks into the store, asking if anyone has a gun and checking waistbands.

WATCH: Police give update on deadly police-involved shooting

Philadelphia police provide new details and release new surveillance video from Friday’s deadly police-involved shooting.

“One of the bystanders apparently says something that alerted the group and that often heightened the officer’s presence,” Bethel said.

The officer then gets to Spencer and signals to his partner that he is armed.

The two officers and Spencer are seen in a short scuffle on the ground before you hear a shot and see blood coming from the leg of an officer.

Officials point out that at the time of the initial gunshot, both officers’ guns are holstered.

Seconds later, the wounded officer’s partner, now identified as Hall, fires at Spencer, killing him, before radioing for backup.

The injured officer, who was crouching, suffered four wounds when he was shot by a single bullet, Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said. He may have tried to fire back, but could not, he said.

“I think he tried, but it did not operate. The other officer did and that was the shot that struck Mr. Spencer,” Vanore said.

While officials did release surveillance video from inside the store, Bethel said the officers did not activate their body cameras, which were knocked off their clothing during the struggle.

A social media video circulating online is now part of the investigation. In the video, Spencer can be seen on the ground with officers on top of him moments before two gunshots are heard. The wounded officer’s partner can then be seen calling for help over the radio.

New video from the night of the shooting is being used in the investigation that left a man dead and an officer injured.

“We acknowledge the concerns of the community and the anger it has sparked by a video – a short video that was put online most recently. The dangerous rumors that come from that, the untruths that come from that are difficult to deal with. And so we’re working hard to disprove those rumors,” Bethel said.

Police are also still searching for a man identified as 42-year-old Jose Quinones-Mendez, who they say stole Spencer’s gun after the shooting.

Philadelphia police identify man sought for taking gun from scene of officer shooting

Quinones-Mendez is considered armed and dangerous. The Philadelphia FOP Lodge #5 is offering a $10K reward for any information that leads to his arrest.

The officer who was wounded was released from Temple University Hospital on Monday. The department has not yet released his name.

The officer who was shot was released Monday afternoon from Temple University Hospital.

In the last three years, Bethel noted that there have been five homicides, 17 non-fatal victims were shot 23 robberies, 62 aggravated assaults, 225 narcotics arrests and 14 illegal guns within 750 feet of the location.

“Where this incident happened is one of our primary districts that has a significant level of violence in that particular area. Where those officers are working is one of the most violent pockets in our area with almost 15 times the violence that we see in other areas of the city,” he said.

Philadelphia police are working with the DEA’s office and the two officers involved have been placed on administrative duties, per protocol.

“Our goal is to be transparent in this work. Our goal is to hold ourselves accountable for our work,” Bethel said.

While transparency was the main topic hammered home in this press conference, as well as the desire for the public to see what happened, the media was not allowed to ask any questions.

Action News has reached out to the police department to answer lingering questions, such as what happened in the store before the shooting, whether the “stop and frisk” was justified and if the officer’s actions before the shooting followed protocol. We have not yet heard back.

Now, those who were on the scene are questioning why police initially went into the grocery store.

Action News is showing the beginning of a social media video from a witness who started recording after police were already in a struggle with Spencer on the ground. It has also been blurred.

“Yo, what y’all doing, bruh? What y’all doing?” the witness recording the video can be heard saying.

Police say they are aware of this 30-second clip and that it’s part of the investigation.

The incident happened Friday night inside Jennifer Tavern on the corner of N. Mascher and W. Cambria streets in North Philadelphia.

Police say two officers entered the store and tried to stop Spencer before they got into a scuffle.

Spencer is then on the ground with one officer.

Officers say that’s when Spencer allegedly shot one officer in the leg and the officer’s partner returned fire, killing Spencer.

However, by watching the video, it’s unclear who fired shots first.

You can then hear the bystander who was recording questioning police and then an officer calls for help.

“I need someone right now. My partner is shot,” one of the officers is heard saying to his radio.

Investigators have not said why they tried to stop Spencer or what led to it.

During the incident, police say 42-year-old Jose Quinones-Mendez fled the scene with Spencer’s gun. However, that part isn’t seen on the video clip shot by the witness.

Right now, police are searching for Quinones-Mendez, who is facing several charges, including obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence. He is considered armed and dangerous, according to police.

The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5 is offering a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to Quinones-Mendez’s arrest.

“Our reward is payable immediately, if the tip information leads to the whereabouts of this individual,” said, FOP Lodge #5 President, Roosevelt Poplar.

Quinones-Mendez is described as being 5’8″ tall and approximately 160 lbs. His last known address was on the 2900 block of North Hancock Street.

Spencer’s friends have since created a memorial in his honor outside of the store where they say he often went to play the slot machines.

“I just feel like I just want to know what really happened. What did he do? Y’all could’ve just arrested him. Y’all could’ve just done way better,” said one of Spencer’s friends who did not want to be identified.

The names of the two officers have not been released. The wounded officer has been on the force for nine years and the officer who fired has been on the force for five years.

    The investigation is still ongoing.

Anyone with information on Quinones-Mendez’s whereabouts is being asked to call the Philadelphia police homicide unit at 215-686-3334 or 9-1-1.
