    Thomas also pieces together a timeline of ’90s makeup trends for me. Over the course of the decade, makeup underwent a transformation from skewing more grunge with dark eyes, matte complexions, and minimal contour to the shift towards pop culture-inspired looks of the late ’90s and, “glitter, brighter colors, glossy lips.” Older Gen Zers may even remember their Y2K childhood years as being defined by trends that were everywhere just a couple years prior to their earliest memories being intact. And then there was the impact of the internet (even if it was dial-up and had us caught in chat rooms), making beauty all the more accessible at the click of a mouse.

    According to Tisha Thompson, celebrity makeup artist and founder of LYS Beauty, one reason why the ’90s is an easy era to recreate with present-day products is due to shade diversity becoming more mainstream. Flashback was everywhere and individuals with deep skin tones fell victim to the limited shade ranges of products. The decade’s most recognizable makeup looks have been made better with steps towards inclusion. “When thinking back to old runway shows or red carpets, the 90s perfectly married natural beauty with glam, and I love seeing modern renditions of that makeup style,” she says. 

    I gained a better idea of how hair changed throughout the ’90s by tapping celebrity hairstylist Adam Maclay who shared a timeline not so unlike that of the makeup trends of the decade. The era began with the beauty trends from the 80s still spilling over—think flattops, perms, and big hair. By the mid-90s, the eye-catching shapes and styles that were once thought to be inaccessible by the general public became achievable through the popularization of perms, blow outs, experimentation with hair color, and more. “Music videos were at their peak in production costs and exposure. Whatever look artists were wearing became popular very quickly, explains Maclay. We also started to see celebrity fashion covers and brand sponsorships.” The decade reached its end with flat ironed hair, half updos with butterfly clips, and braids reigning supreme.

    Since Macklemore sang about the Thrift Shop, people really embraced thrift. Buying used things can conjure up a feeling of euphoria. You get to spend a portion of the retail price for an item you deem valuable. in the new era of sustainable fashion, you can find unique pieces, which may be a little worn, but stand out. The adventure of the hunt plays into the adventure.  But are second hand cosmetics safe to use?

    While the idea of selling your old makeup may sound like a great way to earn some extra cash, it’s not the safest of practices — at least for buyers. Still, popular websites like Mercari,  have their own section of second hand makeup gives these purchases a sense of legitimacy and security, even though in reality, they could give you an eye infection.

    While some sites like eBay don’t sell used makeup products because of the health risks they pose, Glambot claims to check and clean all of their used products thoroughly, having each go through a five-step authentication and sanitation process. This is just a long way of saying that they wiped the products clean with some cotton swabs.

    “Used cosmetics present some serious health and safety concerns because the products and applicators used to apply them often come into direct contact with the body,” explains eBay‘s makeup policy.

    Dermatologists who had different opinions on the matter, yet most agreed users should be wary of all second hand make up, especially those products focusing on areas near the mouth and the eyes.

    “Used makeup can contain fungus or bacteria can cause infections. This is especially an issue for makeup which comes in direct contact with the skin like applicators touching the skin, or anything you dip your finger into (like an open jar),” explains Jordana Mattioli, celebrity esthetician.

    Most experts also took the time to explain makeup is generally applied in bathrooms, making it easier for these products to catch bacteria or viruses, which can survive and live in the product for long periods of time. While you might get lucky when you use a sample lipstick from a Sephora store, it’s much more likely to catch a virus or a staph infection from someone’s beloved (and well-worn) make up.

    In short: don’t do it. A used mascara tube is not the same thing as a used jacket.

    Bella Baxter, the curiosity (played by Emma Stone) at the center of Yorgos Lanthimos’s neo-Gothic romp, Poor Things, cuts a severe figure in waist-grazing raven hair and heavyset brows. But the character herself—a living, breathing experiment on her way to self-actualization—is really a tangle of contradictions. Her delicate beauty skews feral, her sexual hedonism is braided with the absurd. Even before the film’s New York premiere on Wednesday evening, Stone’s performance had already been drawing praise. (A snippet of a frenetic dance sequence in the trailer hints at just how much the performance is a finely calibrated, full-bodied feat.) But with a winding awards season likely ahead, how might an actor carry the spirit of this wild child onto an otherwise buttoned-up red carpet?

    Stone’s premiere look offered an early glimpse: all the polish you’d expect of a seasoned Oscar winner, with a glimmer of Bella’s idiosyncratic verve. That played out as a diaphanous yellow Louis Vuitton dress, a jeweled orchid worn on the neck with a Degas-style ribbon, raspberry lips and pearlescent eyes, and the actor’s back-to-red hair twisted into a deconstructed knot. It helps to have a creative team that has shepherded Stone throughout her career. “Since 2007—Superbad, her first film,” says makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, speaking in the car as she and hairstylist Mara Roszak shuttled from Stone’s hotel room to the screening. Together with stylist Petra Flannery, the three women have the push-pull of collaboration down. “I always say we’re kind of like a band,” Goodwin says.

    In tracing the trajectory from Poor Things to premiere, Stone credits the film’s hair and makeup designer, Nadia Stacey, for such beautiful work—raw skin and runaway hair lending to that unbridled quality. “Because Bella, my character, is so without shame and self-judgment, I think that applies to beauty in a huge way, and confidence around beauty,” Stone explains via email. “So with this press tour, Rachel and Mara and Petra and I have been talking about a kind of inspiration of Bella and that sort of simplicity but still having fun with color and youthfulness.”

    Quite literally the only bad thing about this lipstick is that I’m constantly wishing for more shades. Although I’m impatient, I have serious respect for the brand because it only launches new shades of this delicious, velvety goodness (yes, it’s so good I almost consider it a dessert) once a year. The newest hue to join the family is Cerise Désir, meaning “cherry desire” in French. It’s sophisticated, vibrant, and definitely makes a statement.

    The mastermind behind this brand, French makeup artist Violette Serrat says this one is a modern rendition of a classic burgundy shade that’s reminiscent of a full-bodied red wine with a blend of dark cherry. It’s easily one of the prettiest lipstick shades I’ve ever laid eyes on, and I cannot wait to add it to my collection.

    Normally, I tend to gravitate toward more neutral, everyday lip shades, but this rich, mysterious burgundy is perfect for the holiday season. I also appreciate that this color is universally flattering. It adds a beautiful pop of color to fairer skin tones but is pigmented enough to look bright and bold on Black and Brown skin as well. Just because it’s not in my nature to gatekeep, I’m listing my other favorite Petal Bouche Matte shades below.

    What is a contour brush? Which one should I use?

    Contour brushes come in a few different shapes and sizes, with each one giving specific results. “You can find some brushes that are extremely dense with a flat top, which tends to create a sharper contour line. These are usually designed for cream contours,” says celebrity and royal makeup artist Hannah Martin. Contour brushes like these can often be named foundation brushes and are useful across your base makeup as well as for sculpting. “Pointed brushes are great for focusing product in the hollows of the cheekbone, whereas the most common angled contour brush can come either tightly or loosely bound and in a range of sizes to get into the nooks and crannies of the face,” Hannah says. These can sometimes look more like an angled blush brush, except the bristles are often more densely packed together.

    When it comes to choosing which contour brush to use, you’ll need to consider a couple of things: am I using a powder, cream or liquid formula – and which part of the face am I contouring? If you’re using a cream and contouring the cheekbones and jawline, Monika suggests choosing a “slightly larger brush, on the denser side” like a large angled contour brush, whereas if you prefer powder formulas you’ll be best off going for something that looks more like a powder brush – fluffier and softer than your more traditional sculpting brush.

    But as we caught up ahead of the red carpet, Meredith opened up about everything beauty and beyond. Here is Meredith in her own words…

    This is probably the greatest makeup hack I’ve learned in recent times.

    “Today when I was getting my makeup done, the makeup artist used a powder puff to blend my concealer, which I’ve never seen anyone do, and I would never think to do. I would only use it for powder. I was like, ‘wait, can I try and do it myself’. Then I looked in the mirror and I was blending it out with the powder puff and it was so good. The powder puff doesn’t absorb any of the product and it just blends it in really smoothly. And the concealer had such a nice smooth finish. So if anybody wants an under eye that’s not creased and just super smooth, I would suggest trying to blend it out with a powder puff.”

    This British Fashion Awards red carpet look is probably one of my favourite eye looks I’ve ever done.

    “Today I did a shimmery eye paired with a really glowy base. The necklace I’m wearing is a very big statement piece from Chopard, so I wanted to compliment the necklace. We used the Charlotte Tilbury ‘The Beautyverse’ Palette, and we did the silver shade all over the lid. Then we did a really sharp black liner. It’s probably one of my favourite eye looks that we’ve done. It’s so gorgeous.”

    If I only have five minutes, I’m not skipping my foundation or my lips.

    “My base usually consists of the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter and the Kosas Revealer Concealer because it’s a nice soft combination. The Flawless Filter isn’t a full [coverage] foundation, it’s more of a glowy base. Then after I have those on, I’ll go in with the LYS Cream Bronzing stick. I love that product – it’s so good and it blends like butter.”

    “My lip is probably my favourite part of my glam routine. I feel like it completes my look and really takes it to the next level. I’ll use the Charlotte Tilbury Iconic Nude Lip Cheat lip liner – it’s my favourite one. I have six of them because I feel like I just leave them in my purses and I’m always reaching for them. Then on top of that, I’ll use my Morphe X Meredith gloss – it’s my perfect lip combo.”

    Play with glitter, you won’t regret it.

    “I think sparkles or glitter can take any look to holiday glitzy glam. If you’re in a rush and you’re invited to a holiday party last minute, literally just swiping glitter onto the eyelid can make it that much more glam. The Charlotte Tilbury palette we used today for my eye look is so beautiful and it’s such high quality pigments as well. That palette is perfect for the holidays because the shimmers and glitter are great.”

    I switched up my lip technique to make it sharper.

    “I recently found this lip liner technique, which was super helpful to me because I love a good lip liner. Lip liner can be difficult for some people because everybody has a different lip shape. The technique was lining your lips at the corner of your mouth first and you follow right outside the natural lip line up to your cupid bow, then you accentuate your cupid bow. I would usually start at my Cupid’s bow and follow down, but I found with this technique I get a much more natural, defined look and my corners are sharper.”

    It’s this kind of honest, relatable advice that helped to uplift Meredith in the first place. And, just to be sure, I tried her ‘powder puff concealer’ trick myself and can confirm, I’m sold. I just wish I’d tried it sooner.

    I believe that your life shows you a preview of your true calling at a young age. For me, I always loved writing and reading beauty and fashion magazines—and look where I am now! Toni Ko, the founder of Nyx Professional Makeup and Bespoke Beauty Brands, had a similar experience. Ever since she was young, she loved makeup and would watch in admiration as her mom applied her lipstick in the morning. From the age of 14, Ko worked at her family’s beauty supply store, where she learned the behind-the-scenes of the industry and what it takes to run a company.

    Ko told me that Nyx Professional Makeup—now a $500 million brand—was born out of her experience as a consumer. “I remember going to the department stores and swooning over the high-end beauty brands, but they were too expensive for me to buy,” she said. She wanted to re-create the high-end packaging and high quality of department store cosmetics but make them affordable, so she founded Nyx Professional Makeup at just 25 years old. “The only way to succeed is to focus on finding a solution, rather than focusing on the problem,” she says, reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey. She also notes that out-of-the-box creativity, trend forecasting, and having a strong narrative are the most important factors in creating a successful brand.

    4. Try a lash hack or go for under-eye false lashes

    Having a low-key lash using mascara is quite difficult, and although they’re imperative to open up your eyes and make your face look more balanced and awake, it takes away from the natural look. However, there are nice mascaras out there that don’t require heavy layering to give you that definition. Alternatively, opt for razor-thin false lashes that sit under your eye – as these go almost undetectable and can look even more natural than mascaras.

    Major tip alert from Hannah: “If you want big, dense lashes but don’t want to sacrifice definition, be sure to keep a spoolie brush with you when applying your mascara. As you layer your mascara, comb your lashes through with the clean spoolie to unclump your lashes and separate them to keep them looking defined.” She then adds: “If there are just one or two lashes clumped together, then use the tip of the spoolie to separate. I also like to use the clean spoolie to pull the lashes in the inner corner of my eye towards my nose for a more fanned effect but with less risk of getting mascara on my nose. The same can be said for fanning out lashes in the outer corner.” Noted.

    Brows are the key of face framing, balance and structure. They were once underrated, but brow products are now many women’s desert island beauty product of choice.     Opt for a clear gel to slick them upwards and outwards, so they look neat, or simply use a three-edge microfilling pen to fill in any gaps which make them appear fuller yet still natural. If you’ve gone a bit to heavy handed on the brow pen, you don’t have to double down — just go over it with a wet cotton bud to remove excess product.
