  • These Are the Exact MAC Lipsticks That Had '90s Pop Culture Icons in a Chokehold

These Are the Exact MAC Lipsticks That Had '90s Pop Culture Icons in a Chokehold

    [ad_1]

MAC Cosmetics has a long storied history in the beauty industry. Ever since the Canadian-born company launched in 1985 as Make-up Art Cosmetics, it’s been a favorite of beauty lovers. By the time the ‘90s rolled around, MAC’s popularity would reach new heights. The brand would become the go-to for professional makeup artists making magic both onscreen and on the red carpet. You couldn’t open a beauty magazine without seeing a mention of the brand. Chances are if you were watching a movie or TV show, the actor was wearing some sort of MAC product. It was everywhere. Some of our favorite stars even wore MAC lipsticks off-duty.

Teens in the ‘90s all knew that the MAC counter in the mall was the hottest destination. They were innovating the beauty industry year after year. In 1994, MAC made history when it launched the very first VIVA Glam campaign, featuring then-rising drag star RuPaul. MAC even created a custom lipstick shade for one of the world’s biggest pop stars of the time to use on her tour. MAC continues to become a makeup mainstay in pop culture. After all, it was only last year when MAC sold out of its Nightmoth lip liner after it was revealed to be used on Jenny Ortega in Wednesday!

If you’re feeling inspired to time-travel back to the ‘90s and recreate iconic lip looks from some of the era’s biggest stars, keep reading to find out which ones to add to your cart. Sadly, some were discontinued, but a lot of them are still available (like the brick-red lipstick Jennifer Aniston wore in Friends!).

  • I'm 43 and Agree With Gen Z—This Emerging Makeup Brand Is About to Take Over

I'm 43 and Agree With Gen Z—This Emerging Makeup Brand Is About to Take Over

    [ad_1]

Many makeup brands prioritize Gen Z these days, but as someone in her 40s who is considered an elder millennial, I don’t care much about anyone’s target audience. I like what I like, especially when it involves a showstopping eye. While I appreciate a playful aesthetic with my makeup, it still needs to feel and look right for a wise and refined lady such as myself.

Enter Neen. The brainchild of celebrity makeup artist and Stila founder Jeanine Lobell, Neen pairs Gen Z’s affinity for technology and tutorials with high-performance, consciously formulated products that makeup lovers of all ages can appreciate. Surprisingly, I first heard about Neen through a non-editor friend who is also in her 40s shortly after its launch in March 2022.

The appeal was instant. Over on TikTok, the hashtag for #neen has 13.5M views. It’s not surprising—an industry veteran like Lobell knows what she’s doing. Always the innovator, Lobell conceived the idea of a monthly subscription card containing makeup samples and a QR code leading to a set of video tutorials. Subscribers get the total subscription cost in store credit. The idea is that people can test the product (or “date before you get married,” as the website states) before committing to a full-sized purchase, resulting in less waste and less clutter.

Even though these forward-thinking concepts clearly speak to Gen Z, they weren’t Lobell’s primary focus. “When I launched Neen, it was really age-agnostic. We’ve never been for or not for certain ages. I strive to innovate and create products that speak to makeup lovers of all types,” Lobell tells Who What Wear. “I think it’s more about a mindset—a psychogeographic—than an age demographic. The way to do this? Just always create the best in the formulation.”

Neen’s lineup features gloriously pigmented single shadows and mini palette trios, hydrating lip glosses, and creamy eye pencils, among other products. The brand’s newest release is the Going Steady Longwear Lip Color, a dreamy matte liquid lipstick in four bold shades.

  • I Have Green Eyes—These 14 Eye Shadows Make Them Pop

I Have Green Eyes—These 14 Eye Shadows Make Them Pop

    [ad_1]

Did you know that only 2% of people worldwide have green eyes? That’s right—if you’re lucky enough to have green eyes, you’re among the very few people who do. I have green eyes, and they’re one of my favorite features to play up.

If you want to emphasize your eye color, it’s all about the eye shadow you choose. While neutrals and dark colors will still look amazing on people with green eyes, there are a few colors that work overtime to bring out the green. I tapped Molly R. Stern, celebrity makeup artist and Armani Beauty Collective member, for her expertise on what eye shadows look best with green eyes.

“Colors that tend to make green eyes pop have a warm undertone like copper or bronze,” says Stern. “They also really shine with a lavender or purple based shade. Both the copper and purple routes have a reddish undertone, which work to boost the green as it follows basic color theory and are shades that are opposite on the classic color wheel.”

  • I Have a Weakness for Designer Makeup—My “Can't-Skips” at Sephora and Nordstrom

I Have a Weakness for Designer Makeup—My “Can't-Skips” at Sephora and Nordstrom

    [ad_1]

I’ll admit it—I have a weakness for designer makeup, and it all started when I was younger and not yet a beauty editor. I remember scouring fashion magazines from front to back, obsessing over the luxe makeup products the editors were recommending to readers like me. Fast-forward to today, and I’m a beauty editor myself. It’s only fair that I share my recommendations, right?

Designer makeup is known for many things, including luxe packaging and a comparatively high price point. However, this high price point often signals high quality, which is why some designer makeup products are so worth it to me. From a concealer that erases dark circles to a mascara that creates thick, lush lashes, I put together a list of my “can’t-skip” designer makeup products. Keep scrolling to see (and shop) all 15.

  • How to strengthen nails, according to dermatologists

How to strengthen nails, according to dermatologists

    [ad_1]

“Emery boards cause microscopic openings and splits at the tip of the nail that lead to peeling and cracks,” Dr. Stern explains. “I prefer glass or crystal nail files over cardboard emery boards because they don’t cause microscopic openings or tears and instead create a clean edge at the nail.”

Leighton Denny Small Crystal Nail File

    Opt for non-acetone polish remover

“In terms of chemical exposure, polish remover is a big one: Acetone tends to be especially drying to the nail and can make brittle nails worse,” Dr. Stern says, noting that it’s best to seek out conditioning formulas that contain ingredients like soy and/or have added moisturising benefits from oils. Try the Cutex Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover which is enriched with coconut oil, or the Manicurist Green Nail Polish Remover.

    Avoid nail products with formaldehyde

If typical nail-strengthening products sound too good to be true, that’s unfortunately because many of them are. “Many so-called nail strengtheners still contain formaldehyde or formalin, ingredients that are very damaging to the nail,” warns Dr. Stern. “Formaldehyde will initially harden the nail; however, with time, the nail becomes paradoxically brittle and is at risk of lifting or separating off of the nail bed.”

Formaldehyde can also cause severe allergic reactions at the surrounding nail folds, she adds, prompting the skin to become extremely irritated, swollen and painful. Translation? When shopping for nail products, opt for those formulated without formaldehyde.

    Moisturise with sunflower oil

Keep your cuticles and nail moisturised, but always look for products that are formulated with scientifically proven ingredients, says Dr. Stern. “When looking for a nail and cuticle moisturiser look for products that are rich in phospholipids, which have been shown to increase nail flexibility, thus combatting brittleness,” she says. “Massage the product into your cuticles several times daily.”

You’ll find phospholipids in products containing sunflower oil and Brazil nut oil: According to Dr. Stern, both oils are especially rich in phospholipids.

L’Occitane Shea Nail & Cuticle Nourishing Oil

OPI ProSpa Nail and Cuticle Oil To-Go

    Treat nails with glycolic acid

Finally, be sure to seek out nail treatments containing glycolic acid. “Glycolic acid has been shown to rejuvenate brittle nails,” confirms Dr. Stern. “Just like we do peels for the skin to remove the superficial layers of dead cells, this strategy is also applicable to the nail,” Stern says.

Once the damaged layer of nail cells is removed, any product you apply after will be better absorbed – helping to hydrate and fortify the nail. A “peel for the nails” can be be done either in a dermatologist’s office or at home, Stern says.

  • According to a Self-Proclaimed Lipstick Hater, This Satin Formula Is Elite

According to a Self-Proclaimed Lipstick Hater, This Satin Formula Is Elite

    [ad_1]

What makes this satin formula different from the other lip products that you’ve launched in the past?

Mario Dedivanovic: We’ve had a nice collection of matte, liquid, and glossy formulas but didn’t have a classic creamy lipstick, which is what I’ve always used the most. This satin formula is classic yet modern in that it glides and grips the lips with super comfortable wear. The color story is also unique because the shades are inspired by and pay tribute to NYC, where I was born and raised.

What are your best practices for applying lipstick? Should you always wear a lip liner? Should you wear a lip balm underneath?

You can pair SuperSatin Lipstick with my UltraSuede Sculpting Lip Pencil, especially if you’re trying to re-create my signature Lip Lift technique, but the formula works beautifully by itself if you want to skip the pencil step. Lately, I’ve been into a blurred/stained lip, so I start by using less lipstick to get the look.

What advice would you give to someone new to wearing lipstick and trying to find the right shade for their skin tone?

Start by finding a shade that resembles your natural lip color since no color will be more flattering than the one you were born with. This will be a perfect everyday go-to shade that looks good with everything. Most important, though, is choosing a shade that makes you feel good and that you find most flattering. I say let your intuition guide the process. You’re drawn to what you like for a reason.

What’s your favorite shade in this collection?

All the shades in this collection are special to me, but my absolute favorite is Bronx Baby. I grew up in the Bronx and wanted to name my favorite shade after the neighborhood I’m from. The shade reminds me of a soft, warm rose lipstick my oldest sister Vicky used to wear and is an easy, simple way to wear nude every day.

Then, J.Lo says it’s time to “pick your favorite red.” While she doesn’t disclose the exact red lipstick she uses, it looks like it’s this one from Kosas, which is a neutral brick red. (The old packaging was black.)

She applies it to the middle of her lips straight from the bullet. “Then I take a lip brush and detail the corners,” she says as she creates small, precise strokes around the edges of her mouth. “When I think of red lips, I think of Marilyn Monroe, but I also think of Gwen Stefani. I think of Taylor Swift.”

With the lip brush, she brings the color slightly outside the edge of her natural lip line to create a fuller, plumper look. “I always draw a little bit bigger when I do a red lip,” she says. “You can get away with that.”

These 12 Nordstrom Beauty Gems Are Too Good to Gift—I'm Keeping Them for Myself

    [ad_1]

My love language has always been gift giving, so as you can imagine, I take the holiday season seriously. It’s like my own personal Olympics. And while many of my friends and family members start brainstorming gifts just a few weeks before winter break, I start brainstorming in July. That’s not an exaggeration. Each year, during the height of summer, I open a note on my phone and start adding ideas to it. By the time winter rolls around, I have my gifts bought, assembled, and wrapped. And I’m waiting impatiently to give them all out.

Because of my fascination with gift giving, I rarely allocate any of my budget to myself. If I do, that means a product is really special. That’s the case with a few Nordstrom beauty products I came across during my gift-giving research—well, 12 to be exact. They were all so promising that I couldn’t help but keep them for myself. Hailey Bieber's “Sugar Plum Fairy” Look Is My Holiday Inspo, so I Re-Created It

    [ad_1]

At this point, I’m pretty sure Hailey Bieber has influenced me more than any other celebrity (save for the other queen of TikTok, Sofia Richie Grainge). I’m constantly trying her favorite products and re-creating her makeup looks. Whether it’s the product she uses to get a perfect slicked-back bun or the vitamin C serum she swears by, I’m going to try it out for myself.

My most recent Bieber-influenced obsession is “Sugar Plum Fairy” makeup. This is the term she coined for a certain pink, shimmery makeup look she created on TikTok. Ever since I first saw it, I’ve been hooked. To me, it’s a fresh and unexpected take on holiday makeup.

That’s right. This year, instead of going with classic makeup elements like gold glitter and red lipstick, I’m choosing to go the Nutcracker route. Shimmery pink eye shadow, frosty rose-gold highlighter, and a shiny lip gloss will make me look like I came out of a Tchaikovsky dreamland. It’s only right that I end the year of balletcore beauty in this way. I Ranked the Celeb-Favorite Beauty Products I Was Influenced to Buy This Year

    [ad_1]

My name is Kaitlyn McLintock, and sometimes, I’m influenced by celebrities to buy things. There, I said it. As a beauty editor, it’s easy to blame it on my job and call it “research” or “due diligence.” After all, I can’t crown a certain product as the best without comparing it to all of the others on the market, right? That’s true, but if I’m being honest, it’s more than that. It’s also about the fact that I want to have the best beauty products at my disposal. If a celebrity, who has access to basically anything they want, uses or recommends something, I want it.

Let me be clear. I’m not necessarily looking for celebrity endorsements. I’m interested in the products they use without being compensated for using them or, at the very least, products they’ve created themselves. Say what you will about celebrity beauty brands, but if they’re slapping their name on something, they have to believe in it at least a little bit.

This year, I bought and tested a lot of celeb beauty products. I, however, only felt a few were worth the money, and I figured I’d share them with you. Ahead, see all the celeb-favorite beauty products I used this year, ranked from most to least favorite.

  • If You Want Glowing Skin Instantly, Change This Specific Step in Your Routine

If You Want Glowing Skin Instantly, Change This Specific Step in Your Routine

    [ad_1]

There are a lot of ways you can finally have the glowing skin of your dreams, but there’s one key step in your routine that can really make a huge difference. “It’s only obvious that everyone wants to achieve that perfect glow, but what I’ve learned after all these years in the industry is that most people do not know how to exfoliate properly,” says aesthetician and Facify Beauty founder Crystal Koro. “Either they are using products that are too harsh and rough or not using the proper form of exfoliation for their skin type.” If you have sensitive skin, you’ll want to opt for something extremely gentle and only exfoliate a couple times a week. For those who are acne-prone or have oily skin, you may want to opt for a BHA toner with salicylic acid or even a PHA one.

Dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, agrees. “Exfoliating about two to three times per week is critical to remove dead skin cells to keep skin bright and smooth,” he says. “You’ll also want to protect skin from environmental factors that contribute to aging skin, such as UV radiation and pollutants, by using products that include sunscreen and antioxidants, respectively.”

Another glowing-skin secret Koro has is to incorporate a device like the Facify Beauty Wand ($399). “Facify offers a unique five-iron head pulse magnetic massage head that provides a cooling massage to help with de-puffing, toning, and promotes blood circulation, which truly gets your skin glowing. It also improves fine lines and wrinkles and promotes lymphatic drainage to reduce inflammation of the face. It truly feels like getting a professional lymphatic massage but in the comfort of your own home,” she shares. For a few expert-recommended glowing-skin products, keep on scrolling.

I Live in Paris: 20 Beauty Essentials I Know French Women Can't Live Without

    [ad_1]

I spent the last year living in Paris, and every time I’m back in the U.S., I’m always asked about French beauty secrets. The term “French beauty” gets thrown around a lot, but what does it really mean? To me, it means natural and effortless—looking like you just rolled out of bed, threw on some mascara, and left to grab a morning coffee. It’s less makeup and more skincare. It’s all about using multi-purpose beauty products that serve an aesthetic function while also strengthening the skin, hair, and nails.

Even though I tend to take a more maximalist approach to my beauty routine, I’ve learned a thing or two over the past few months, both through stealth observation and conversations with French women. And lately, I’ve even started merging bits and pieces of the French beauty philosophy with my own. It all started with some tried-and-true beauty products. Below, check out 20 essentials French women can’t live without, according to me (and my Parisian friends).

Don't Text—I'm Too Busy Swooning Over These Makeup Looks That Feel So 2024

    [ad_1]

Whenever it’s time to talk about the holidays, I can only focus on the amazing makeup looks that I see all over social media and the streets of New York. Sure, the bright lights, festive events, and glamorous outfits are nice, but all I want this season is a guidebook of beauty inspo that I can use for the holidays and beyond. Luckily, the beauty experts in my network can give you and me exactly what we’re looking for. I enlisted fellow editor Katie Berohn and digital creators Tabitha Qassom and Tamara Marbury to create makeup looks worth copying and pasting onto your mood boards for the rest of 2023 and beyond—and they certainly delivered.

They each created a makeup look that taps into the beauty trends we spotted this year, and every product they used is from Sephora at Kohl’s. (No surprise there.) It has an elite curation of all your favorite beauty brands—plus a “clean beauty” category and the ability to filter skincare products by age—so all the best products are at your fingertips. I’ve been taking notes on these looks, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share them with you all. Keep scrolling for the makeup looks you’ll be re-creating in 2024.

I’m probably one of those rare people who wear a red lip almost every single day. But I typically keep the rest of my everyday makeup simple. My advice for wearing a glam look beyond the holidays would be to pick your favorite part of your holiday look, whether that’s a bold lip or glittery eye shadow, and make that the focal point of your everyday looks. If you opt for one focal point and keep the rest of your look more subdued, you can transition any holiday look easily. I would wear this to a holiday party, but I would also wear it to dinner with friends, a family gathering, or a work event. It’s versatile but still perfect for a special occasion. Sephora at Kohl’s has the most-coveted makeup products at truly unbeatable prices.”

I started with the Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eyes palette. After creating a smoky eye by building the deeper matte shades to the outer corners of my eyes, I drew a subtle cat eye using the Too Faced liner. I opted to use two different mascaras for the most dramatic effect. I used Tower 28 mascara on my upper lashes for length and curl. For my lower lashes, I just wanted a bit of length, so I used Ilia Limitless Lash mascara to add subtle definition. I added a dot of Rare Beauty blush to the upper part of my cheeks and blended it in for a flush of color. Then, I used Charlotte Tilbury lipstick to create a bold, showstopping red lip. I love how festive it is while still being versatile.”

“I live in SoCal and am always by the beach, so that sun-kissed look is what I tend to gravitate toward throughout the year. During the holidays, I do like to add an even darker blush for that extra pop! I love that all the products I’m wearing fall under Sephora at Kohl’s clean-beauty list and that so many of the pieces are interchangeable and can be used year-round. Quick tip for all my ladies on the go: When you’re in a pinch and only have either a blush or lip color on you, use it on your lids and lips. Don’t shy away from color on your lips year-round! Have fun with your look regardless of the occasion—you won’t be this young tomorrow!”

“I always start by prepping my skin with a moisturizer or oil. With the cooler weather, my skin has been extra dry, so I’ve been loving Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Cream. It instantly smoothes fine lines while hydrating and plumping my skin. While the moisturizer sets into my skin, I apply the holy grail of eyebrow gel, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze. My brows are pretty unruly, and this is the only gel I’ve found that will keep them in place. It has thousands of five-star reviews for good reason! For the ultimate glow, I go in with Saie’s Glowy Super Gel. They make a universal shade that I love, but when I want to be extra bronze, I use the shade Sunglow. It’s a lightweight luminizer that you can wear alone or mix with foundation or tinted moisturizer. There isn’t one person I’ve told to try this that hasn’t fallen in love.

“Next up is Ilia’s skin tint. This lightweight mineral serum has SPF 40 and is clinically proven to improve the look of dryness and blemishes while giving your skin a dewy finish. I then go in with Tower 28’s Bronzino in West Coast, which I love to add to my cheekbones, jawline, forehead, and nose for an illuminating glow. I follow up with Merit’s cream blush, which provides just a touch of color and a long-lasting glow. Finally, I apply Merit’s lipstick, which gives my lips the ultimate hydration and soft satin finish.”

I like my everyday makeup to look naturally flawless, so I do a lot of neutral or deep tones. This holiday season, I want to elevate that look with metallic colors that complement my skin tone. It’s still giving flawless nude tones that I love for my everyday look but with a bit of sparkle and glam. I would wear this look to a holiday party, gala, or formal event in the new year. Sephora at Kohl’s is my go-to destination for my makeup looks because I can easily filter by product type and get a curated list that has just what I need. It has the best of the best products, so I feel confident when I head to checkout.”

The Huda Beauty Empowered eye shadow palette was made for a glam look. It has so many metallic colors to create a sparkly eye. If you want to create a winged eye, you need the Stila Stay All Day waterproof liquid eyeliner. I drew one of my wings a little too low, and it was easy to immediately wipe off and start again. But once I had drawn it perfectly, it stayed in place. The Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara tops off the dramatic eye. Nars blush in Savage is perfect for this glam look because it has a slight metallic sparkle, so it doubles as a blush and highlighter. Then, because you’ve got sparkle on the eyes and cheeks, you need the Charlotte Tilbury nude lip in Super Fabulous so that your lip doesn’t compete with the eye. Top the nude lip off with the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb in Honey Waffles just to add a little shine.”

Even as someone who owns tons of beauty products (hundreds?! thousands?!) I still buy certain necessities on a weekly or monthly basis. Especially, if I’m traveling or visiting my family back home in Minnesota. Ulta is usually my destination of choice because A) it has more selection than drugstores (and I like that it carries prestige lines, as well), and B) it’s typically easier to find an Ulta than it is a Sephora or Nordstrom. (Not to mention, I don’t love having to go into a mall, and usually, I don’t have to if I’m going to an Ulta.)

This $5 Find Is My Secret Weapon for Impossibly Long Lashes That Rival Falsies

    [ad_1]

Do you absolutely need a lash primer? No, you don’t. Celebrity makeup artist Judi Gabbay isn’t necessarily a fan. “I personally don’t love lash primers,” she says. “While some promise to make the lashes thicker, it can actually create a clumpiness and can add weight to your lashes, resulting in spider lashes without any lift. Alternatively, layer your mascara in light coats for the most lifted, natural effect.”

I won’t lie, some days I find it easier to use hacks like Gabbay’s and call it a day, but others, I need to call in the big guns. Personally, I think using a lash primer can boost your mascara formula and help keep it in place if used correctly. If your mascara tends to flake or smudge throughout the day  area, lash primer can keep that from happening. It’s been a lifesaver for me on many occasions and I now prefer using one over not. It’s all about personal preference. The best thing to do is give one a try for yourself and see if you like it.

One wouldn’t necessarily think finding a great bronzer would be all that difficult, but when it comes to finding a formula that doesn’t leave you overly dry, overly shimmery, or orange (the horror!), the task gets frustrating. Oh, and don’t think for a second that spending more money on a bronzer will automatically assure your safety from any of the above…In fact, some of the most well-known bronzers have left us looking like disco balls or like we applied too much cheap self-tanner. That’s not exactly the vibe we’re going for.

When it comes down to it, some of the best formulas we’ve tried during our beauty editor careers cost less than your average latte in Los Angeles, and if the hoards of stellar reviews amount to anything, beauty shoppers everywhere seem to agree.

Since we’ve swiped plenty of dupes, duds, and downright scary formulas over the years, we have a pretty good bearing on what to shop and what to avoid when searching for the best drugstore bronzers. Below, we’re sharing 14 of our favorites that also happen to have amazingly robust reviews. Looking to fake the look of a Hawaiian vacation for $13 or less? Keep scrolling! Your ultimate drugstore bronzer awaits.

    What is a serum foundation?

Just like the name suggests, a serum foundation usually provides buildable light-to-medium coverage while also delivering a seemingly endless range of skincare benefits that you can tailor to specifically address any skin concerns you might have.

What’s the difference between a serum foundation and a standard foundation?

First of all, both serum foundations and typical ol’ foundations offer different amounts of coverage. Serum foundations have less concentrated amounts of colour pigments, meaning that while you shouldn’t expect full coverage from a serum foundation, it’s definitely the best option for the fans of the ‘no-makeup makeup‘ look that’s been making rounds on the Internet in the past few years.

And to make matters slightly more confusing, skin serum foundations are also rather similar to tinted moisturisers, which also belong to the family of skincare/makeup hybrid products – however, the latter tend to focus mostly on hydration and plumping rather than any other skincare benefits.

Which serum foundation should I use?

When it comes to skincare, everything can be tailored to your individual skin needs and there’s rarely a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. For example, if you have dry skin, you might want to get ahold of the MAC Studio Radiance Serum Powered Foundation, which contains a range of hydrating ingredients such as jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E.

If you have sensitive skin, you’ll likely have better luck with the Kosas Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 25, or the ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30, both of which have non-comedogenic and fragrance-free formulas that don’t feel heavy or cake-y. Oh, and don’t forget the Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation – after all, you can pretty much never go wrong with Glossier when it comes to lightweight, radiant and dewy makeup looks.
