  • 10 Products To Keep In 2023, 10 Products To Leave Behind

10 Products To Keep In 2023, 10 Products To Leave Behind

    [ad_1]

2022 brought so many product recommendations my bank account wishes I hadn’t seen. My entire TikTok FYP is filled with makeup routines and the next hottest product. Everyone tells me I need to have this product, so I tell my bank I need to have that product.

I want to feel as confident as a supermodel even if I don’t have the throngs of makeup artists and hair stylists they do. If they’re plugging a product, I’m probably going to try it. But, in the age of the everyday influencer, it’s getting harder to tell what’s a paid advertisement and what’s not.

@thehennaali Save your money 💸 Makeup I will not be buying again! #makeup#makeuprecommendations#makeuphaul2022#makeupreview#ratingmakeup#beautyproducts#antihaul#rembeauty♬ original sound – sophia

That’s right – some videos don’t tell you if it’s a paid promotion when it’s really an ad. Brands are sending free products to TikTok’s finest in exchange for rave reviews – even if the product doesn’t deserve it.

@scortezzbeauty The all time BEST products of 2022 #top5#recommendations#makeup♬ original sound – Scortezz Beauty

Take Bobbi Brown’s clean beauty line, Jones Road, for example. It was hyped up to be the “no-makeup makeup” holy grail until products started rolling out. The foundation ended up leaking oil and separating from the foundation which is a pretty bad sign even if it can be mixed. Several users reported that it separated even while on their faces. It was an overall disaster.

Since the year’s almost over, I’m rounding up all of the viral products I purchased and giving you the low down. The good, the bad, and the downright ugly. We are leaving no stone unturned.

Here are 10 things to keep this 2023, and 10 to leave in 2022:

    The Viral Products That Work…

    1. Paula’s Choice Liquid Exfoliant This BHA/AHA treatment does literally everything. It clears stubborn blackheads and exfoliates all the dead skin cells that clog pores, crack makeup, and give you acne. It’s glass skin in a bottle and if I could take one thing to a deserted island it would be this.
    2. Hero Cosmetics Mighty Surface PatchesYou know about pimple patches, but these surface patches cover way more ground so you can tackle problem areas, not just pimples. I wear these a few nights a week when breaking out and I’m clear by the weekend.
    3. La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm If there’s anything I hate, it’s dry skin. I tried a retinol that caused my face to shed, and this miracle balm moisturizer healed my skin overnight while locking in my skincare perfectly.
    4. Makeup By Mario Skin EnhancerI’m a Makeup by Mario stan. High quality products that don’t break the bank? Yes please. This is a bronzer used often on Kim K (and me). It blends easier than a normal contour while snatching my cheekbones.
    5. Oribe Supershine CreamOribe can be a bit pricey, but for 10 ounces of incredible product, this is a steal. My hair looks glossy and fresh out of the salon when I use this.
    6. Dior Backstage FoundationIt’s your skin, but better. Dior created a lightweight, glowy foundation that covers redness without caking. At $40, it’s high end without hurting the wallet.
    7. ONE/SIZE On Til Dawn Setting Spray – If you’re tired of your makeup sliding off by the end of the night, this setting spray will do the trick. It mattifies your makeup and makes it completely waterproof.
    8. Olaplex Set I heavily damaged my hair when I bleached it, but consistent usage of the Olaplex line saved my life. It restores the protein in your dry, damaged hair to fully heal it to the cuticle. Keep up with the products and you’ll see results after a few months.
    9. Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Liner and Lipstick Charlotte Tilbury took off during the pandemic, but the Pillow Talk line will forever remain my fave. Charlotte herself always says the Pillow Talks are everyone’s perfect lip shade, and she’s not wrong.
    10. Rhode Lip Treatment I didn’t want to love another celebrity product, but this one is worth all the money in my account. It hydrates your lips with peptides and cupuacu while also functioning as a gloss.

…And The Viral Products That Don’t

      1. Haus Labs – Every. single. review. told me that Lady Gaga’s brand would change the way I viewed makeup. So when I ordered the foundation and it dried out on my face and cracked immediately, I was heartbroken. When my roommate got the lip oil and was even underwhelmed, I knew that was enough to leave it.
      2. The Good Patch – Any wellness patch in general, really. The hangover cures never work, and I never feel any calmer when I wear the relaxation ones. It’s a placebo effect waiting in the impulse-buy section – avoid!
      3. Glamnetics Press On Nails – The at home manicure is trending, but these popped off after 12 hours of being on my nails. I don’t want to continuously glue my nails on, so these are a pass.
      4. Charlotte Tilbury Mini Magic Cream – I’ve already voiced my opinions on CT’s mini products being highway robbery. The mini Magic Cream is the size of my pinky, for far, far too much money.
      5. Self Tan Water – I’m sorry, but this is just not for me. I can’t see where the tanner is going on my body, so I end up half-tanned and look ridiculous. I’m sticking with a tinted tanner.
      6. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze – The laminated brow trend is fun, but expensive eyebrow products just aren’t it. I’ve been disappointed by every eyebrow product over $12.
      7. Mario Badescu – I loved the Drying Lotion back in the day when I had a pimple, but it flakes off so quickly and just doesn’t do what a pimple patch can. Most of Mario Badescu’s products are underwhelming for me, so I’m leaving them behind.
      8. Expensive Mascaras – Much like eyebrow products, expensive mascaras have never been worth it to me. I’ll take L’Oreal Telescopic and Maybelline Sky High over a $30 tube.
      9. Benefit Benetint – Not nearly pigmented enough for my blush preferences. I understand wanting the natural look, but this won’t give me much of anything.
      10. Drunk Elephant – While I’m sure their products are great, at this price range there are more reputable skincare brands. I like to keep my skincare affordable, so this is staying in 2022.

The Pat McGrath Labs x ‘Star Wars’ Makeup Collection Is Here

    [ad_1]

What does legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath have in common with George Lucas, the filmmaker behind the “Star Wars” franchise? Both are considered visionary geniuses, both have inspired legions of fans and both have become icons in their own right. And now, their creative visions have joined forces, if you will, in the form of Star Wars x Pat McGrath Labs, an 18-piece color cosmetics collection that draws inspiration from the films.

Specifically focused on the classic trilogy — “Star Wars: A New Hope,” “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” —  and created in collaboration with Lucasfilm, the collection includes a 10-pan eye shadow palette, three five-pan eye shadow palettes, four multi-use metallic pigments, four mascaras, three liquid lipsticks and three lip glosses.

I Have Hooded Eyes—a Makeup Artist Just Showed Me How to Do Eyeliner

    [ad_1]

If you have hooded eyes, you might find your eye makeup is prone to smudging or moving on the natural fold of your lids. Prepping your lids correctly and choosing the right eye makeup products will ensure your eyeliner stays put. “Always apply a long-wearing, water-resistant primer or eye shadow first, then gel or liquid eyeliner,” says Russell. “If you are a beginner, you can start by tracing with a soft brown pencil or gel eyeliner,” she says.

When choosing eyeliners, look for long-wearing products that will stay put. “Good long-wearing liquid eyeliners are Bobbi Brown, Clinique, and KVD Tattoo liner,” says Russell.

Makeup artist Carolina Dalí-Trites, whose clients include Constance Wu and Storm Reid, says it’s important to prep and moisturize the under-eye area first so that your makeup can glide on and blend easily. She shared her prep routine, saying, “I start off by applying on clean skin the Russak Dermatology Clinic Chill Out CBD-infused under-eye gel mask—it helps de-puff, soothe, and moisturize the under-eye area. Leave on for 15 to 30 minutes while you’re doing your hair, choosing an outfit, or whatever else you’re up to in the a.m.”

“For best under-eye mask results, store in a cool place or fridge. Follow with the La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Eye Cream—this cream is hydrating yet not oily, wears nicely under makeup, and has a touch of luminosity, which will help reflect light and instantly make the under-eye area look a little brighter. It’s important to choose a moisturizer that’s not too rich or oily because that will make the makeup crease.”

Soria believes in ballin’ on a budget—something I absolutely can’t argue with. “As an advocate for accessible beauty who has used Milani Cosmetics since I was in high school, this was the perfect partnership and an absolute dream come true,” she shares. “I would constantly see my favorite YouTube beauty gurus creating these luxe looks with high-end products, and while I couldn’t afford MAC, Milani was there to bring the color and pigment without breaking the bank.”

Soria kept this in mind when working with Milani on this new collection: “For the Holiday Heist eye shadow palettes, I wanted everyone who came across them to be able to achieve an everyday look and a luxe look all in one palette. As a Latina, I need shades that will pop on my skin so Milani and I co-curated each shade to perfectly suit all skin tones. Additionally, I am known across my social platforms as everyone’s ‘money-saving bestie’ and my motto has always been, ‘Never spend more than you need to.’ Plus, I always finish my videos with the phrase, ‘What do we think?’ These soundbites inspired the Holiday Heist eye shadow palette names as the rose and purple-toned palette in the Luxe Jewel Kit is named What Do We Think? and the Allure Gem Kit eye shadow palette made up of emerald green and gold shades is named Money Saving Bestie.”

“The Holiday Heist collaboration with Milani holds a significant importance to me as a representation of all first-generation Latinas whose parents are immigrants that brought them here for a better future, and who put their hopes and dreams aside to make sure [their children] accomplished all of theirs. Growing up, I never saw someone with my brown skin on a beauty ad and I hope to help inspire the new generation of young girls.”

The Lineup is a monthly series where we’re giving you an inside peek at the beauty lineups of cool fashion people, editors, makeup artists, hairstylists, and aestheticians—all the people we trust the most. Get ready for a behind-the-scenes look at all the can’t-live-without products that make their worlds go ’round.

Laura Lee started her YouTube channel almost a decade ago, and since then, she has amassed more than 4.6 million subscribers. She’s also launched her own makeup line and collaborated with brands like SHEGLAM on limited-edition collections. Impressive? Yes, but the Los Angeles–based makeup artist says she was born loving all things beauty, even before she learned about the importance of skincare. “My skin was good to me. I had (and still have) a lot of freckles and clear skin, but I wish I wore more sunscreen. My family was not educated on the importance of sun protection, and I loved being in the sun,” says Lee.

I Asked a Makeup Artist, Facialist, and Derm to Shop on Amazon—See Their Carts

    [ad_1]

Beauty experts, they’re just like us! Well, kind of. Of course, most of us don’t possess the professional know-how when it comes to prepping a celebrity for a red carpet sparkling with flashbulbs or assessing the health of a person’s complexion, but many of us do have one thing in common with the industry’s best makeup and skincare experts: Amazon! Despite having access to quite literally any product in the world, over the years I’ve discovered that even the most prestigious experts still count on plenty of products you can snap up during your next Amazon shopping binge.

In case you’re curious for some actual examples, I reached out to facialist Candace Marino, makeup artist Jamie Dorman and board-certified dermatologist Ellen Marmur for their signature Amazon shopping picks. Marino did add the caveat that she always recommends continuing to support small businesses, too, but if you’re looking for Amazon content, exclusively, right now, she still has your back with tons of great beauty picks. Keep scrolling! Everything beauty experts would snap up right this second is just below, plus quotes explaining why they feel they’re superior.

  • There’s No Stopping H.E.R.: The Singer Talks Beauty, Music, and More

There’s No Stopping H.E.R.: The Singer Talks Beauty, Music, and More

    [ad_1]

Another way that H.E.R. is staying true to herself is by representing a brand that coincides with her beliefs. As an ambassador for L’Oréal, H.E.R. is able to work with a brand that she feels aligned with. I caught up with her ahead of the brand’s annual Women of Worth event, which celebrates the philanthropic achievements of 10 nonprofit leaders who are committed to helping communities across the country.

“It’s really cool to be a part of something like this,” H.E.R. says. “You go throughout life, and you [wonder], ‘How can I create change? How can I help? How can I use my platform?’ That’s exactly what this event is about. That’s what L’Oréal is about—extending your platform and showing up and being the support that I think we all need. These women are really actively creating change. This is actually the work and not just saying you’re about change, but being about it.”

Being able to work with L’Oréal is a dream come true for H.E.R. “I’ve always been a L’Oréal girl,” she says. “I never thought I would be able to work with a beauty brand.”

Beauty means a lot to the singer, as she’s always used it as a mirror for her emotions. “It’s really about the inside and what makes you feel good on the inside,” she says. She reveals that she lets her feelings dictate how she dresses and presents herself.

This, of course, makes sense. If you live for award shows, you’ll know that H.E.R.’s looks are often one of the highlights of the red carpet. She’s not afraid to play around and experiment with makeup, like the bold eyeshadow look she wore to perform with Alica Keys or the graphic cat eye she sported at the Oscars, and it pays off in spades. “I recently tried a new eyeliner look that I’m obsessed with,” she says. “It’s been a trend, and I finally did it myself. But I went to Doja Cat’s birthday party, and I did this liner look. The liner kind of extends the inner corner of your eye.”

  • How To Pull Off A 10-Second Smoky Eye From A Beauty Editor

How To Pull Off A 10-Second Smoky Eye From A Beauty Editor

    [ad_1]

I’ve found the easiest way to achieve it is to tight-line the eye area with a black pencil liner (I’m into this Victoria Beckham Beauty Satin Kajal Liner in Black.) Celebrity makeup artist Jenny Patinkin once told me that you should get the liner as close to the waterline as possible—and that when you can hear the lashes ruffling as you etch on the liner, that’s when you know you’re in the right spot. The idea here is to create a base for the shadow to eventually blend with, creating that hazy affect.

From there, I go in with my shadow of choice: Gunmetal, a dark brassy metallic that brings just the right amount of edge. I’ve been drawn to options that have a warm taupe undertone because I think it works better with my complexion and eye coloring—but there are stunning shades that skew more silver, cool-toned, and mauve.

For the more creamy-textured shadows, I use my fingers to apply. (My preferred method of application for most days.) I simply pick up a small amount of pigment with my ring finger, and smudge it into the lash line, blending out onto the lid. (Depending on the shadow of choice, you may need to work to blend it a bit more thoroughly—some creams are dense with pigment.) I repeat this process until I get the desired intensity, which is thick at the root, but then dissipates out as you work up the lid. I don’t apply anything higher than my crease.

For powders, it’s a similar situation, but instead of my fingers I pick up a small shadow brush, like this Line Smudge Brush from Jenny Patinkin. But I always start at the lash line and blend out and up. It’s sultry, appropriately messy, and takes all of a few seconds. This glam should be completed with a coat or two of mascara to really play up the drama.

And that’s it! I promise you don’t need to be a pro to get the hang of it. I’m quite rusty with my eye makeup application, and I find it oh-so-easy to pull off. It’s quick too, which means you can spend less time getting ready—and more time sparkling.

TV and movie characters have always had an impact on mainstream beauty trends. Take for instance “The Rachel” haircut from Friends, or the maximalist makeup in Euphoria that brought rhinestone-studded eyes to the mainstream. Sometimes, a particular beauty product that’s worn by a fictional pop culture icon is catapulted to astronomical popularity after becoming a viral TikTok sensation. This, of course, happened with Clinique’s Black Honey after it was identified as the exact lipstick that Liv Tyler wore in Lord of the Rings. But the latest pop culture–inspired makeup that’s got the TikTok girlies hastily filling up their Sephora carts takes its cue from the dark side. It’s the goth-inspired makeup seen in Wednesday, the Addams Family spinoff series that stars our recent cover star, Jenna Ortega, in the titular role.

Since Wednesday’s November 23 debut, it has earned the record for the most hours viewed in a week for an English-language TV series on Netflix. It has also spawned an enormous number of #Wednesdaymakeup tutorials on TikTok (reaching over 43M views) with users re-creating the main character’s subtle smoky eye and muted plum lips. The lip look, which uses MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in Nightmoth ($21), quickly sold out after the brand’s executive director of global trends, Cat Quinn, shared the details on the app.

(Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Blackmail, $22, is another nice alternative!)

While Ortega’s Wednesday shares the same penchant for braided pigtails and Peter Pan collars like Christina Ricci’s in the original Addams Family movies, her makeup is much more distinct. According to the show’s head makeup and hair designer, Tara McDonald, the character brief for Wednesday was edgy, modern, and current. “I wanted Wednesday to have a strong, distinct lip but natural—almost a ‘just bitten’ look,” she tells us. “This can be achieved with tinted balms, sheer lipsticks, and lip stains, but in this instance after trying numerous colors and applications, we settled on the MAC’s Lip Pencil in Nightmoth and Dr. PawPaw’s Multipurpose Soothing Balm ($6).”

Other products used for Wednesday’s “half-dead” look consisted of MAC’s Eyeshadow in Brown Script on her lid, crease, and under-eye; then Carbon, an intense rich black, underneath her eyes; and Glitch in the Matrix, a gray metallic, in the upper lash line. (Brown Script is no longer available, but we like the shade Soft Brown as a substitute.)

For complexion products, McDonald says they used various matte foundations that were always applied very sparingly with a damp beauty sponge on Ortega’s face, neck, and hands in a shade or two lighter than the actor’s skin tone. “Wednesday was to look matte at all times,” she explains. “The application was so sheer—I wanted her freckles visible.” McDonald also used MAC’s sculpting powders in Sculpt and Shadowy for contour.

For the hairstyle Wednesday wore during episode four’s now-iconic dance scene, McDonald found inspiration from an unlikely, non-goth source: Alexa Chung. The model wore milk braids in a 2013 L’Oréal hair campaign, and McDonald found it perfect for the scene. “That look was etched in my mind,” she says. “I took some inspiration from that for Wednesday’s look at the Rave’N.”

Wednesday wasn’t the only character to have a modern makeover. Anjelica Huston’s ’90s-era Morticia was known for her red lipstick, but McDonald opted to “change the palette,” using darker makeup for Catherine Zeta-Jones. “I wanted to add more purple, mahogany, and plums,” she says. “These colors made Catherine’s dark eyes pop beautifully and look so sultry.” McDonald says she only had one day of tests with Zeta-Jones to get the look right; together, they decided to go with a warm plum tone for lips, using the now-discontinued Tom Ford Bruised Plum lipstick. (Though, we’ve provided two similar options you can shop below.)

For Morticia’s waist-length hair, daily clip-in hair extensions were used. “Catherine is a great collaborator and very knowledgeable about makeup, so together we created this modern Morticia,” says McDonald.

Anyone missing Morticia’s crimson pout may be satisfied with Principal Larissa Weems’s look. Weems, played by Gwendoline Christie, was “a Hitchcock blonde all the way!” according to McDonald. She’s always seen in a statement red lip, which was attributed to Code8’s Opera, at least for the first couple of episodes until McDonald ran out of the product.

“We were filming in Romania during the pandemic,” she explains. “Lisa Eldridge sent me a selection of reds to try on her. We settled on her stunning Velvet Ribbon. MAC’s Redd Lip Liner worked perfectly with both.”

‘Hailey Bieber Nails,’ ‘Addison Rae Lipgloss’ and ‘Old Money Aesthetic’ Among Top Trending Google Searches of 2022

    [ad_1]

As the year ends and we reflect on the last 12 months, Google‘s annual Year in Search reveals what the most culturally significant moments, people and trends of 2022 were — according to what we typed into our search engines.

Based on the top trending queries (which the company defines as searches with a high spike in traffic over a sustained period within the U.S.), the Year in Search yields some fascinating results, some more surprising than others: On the fashion front, “how to style leather pants” was a trending styling tip, while many also inquired about the “preppy aesthetic“; Hailey Bieber’s nails, meanwhile, topped beauty searches, as did “passport makeup trend” and “What skincare products should not be refrigerated?”

  • 20 Brush Sets Celebrity Makeup Artists Would Personally Gift Their Friends

20 Brush Sets Celebrity Makeup Artists Would Personally Gift Their Friends

    [ad_1]

I love getting the chance to take a peek at what’s in the kits of celebrity makeup artists. Their arsenals are always filled with the best foundations, primers, eye shadow palettes, and even skincare products. The items in their collection that I often nerd out the most over, though, are their brushes. Each artist has their own unique taste and preferences when it comes to brushes and they know best because, well, they’re the ones that use them the most.

So, echoing that sentiment, who better to ask for gift recommendations in that realm than the pros? There’s always a plethora of makeup brush gift sets to choose from once the holidays roll around and I asked a couple of makeup artists for their picks. Keep scrolling—these are the sets they’d buy for a friend.

  • Ditch Your Lash Glue and Try Magnetic Lashes

Ditch Your Lash Glue and Try Magnetic Lashes

    [ad_1]

    Dominique Charriau

Have you ever watched a beauty tutorial and wondered how that guru popped on a pair of falsies so quickly? You’re not alone. False eyelashes are notoriously tricky to apply, even harder to remove, and often leave the eye sticky with a bit of glue residue. On the other hand, lash extensions are an investment and require major upkeep. What’s a person to do if they want the look of long and luscious lashes, but mascara alone isn’t enough to create the desired effect? Enter: magnetic lashes, the less complicated cousin of the falsie that’s easy to apply and remove without leaving behind a sticky mess.

Magnetic lashes work in two ways: they can be attached by using two magnetic strips that snap over the lash line, or you can apply a magnetic eyeliner before you place the lash.

And since they don’t require lash glue, they may be a safer option for some folks. “Lash glues can be very toxic as they contain ethyl cyanoacrylate and parabens, which can cause skin irritations,” says optometrist Dr. Arian Fartash. “Many times, people have a sensitivity to the glue that traditional falsies are applied with, so for this reason, [magnetic lashes] can be better to use.”

Below, we scoured customer reviews and looked to some of our favorite Youtubers to find the 12 best magnetic lashes on the market. Plus, we consulted Dr. Fartash about everything you need to know on the topic.

    Are magnetic lashes safe?

These high-tech falsies are safe if you proceed with caution. “Magnetic lashes can cause the same problems as strip lashes if not taken care of or removed properly—things like loss of lashes, conjunctivitis, and blepharitis,” explains Dr. Fartash. “The wearer must remove the liner properly, as we don’t want it to clog the lash pores.”

    Are magnetic lashes re-useable?

Just like standard falsies, magnetic lashes can last a long time if they’re taken care of. Dr. Fartash also recommends cleaning the lashes after every use. “I recommend using a lash brush to gently rub the soap on the falsies and loosen up debris before washing with warm water,” says Dr. Fartash. “A great cleanser that I recommend to my patients is the WeLoveEyes Foaming Cleaner and the Eyelid Margin Cleansing Brush.”

  • The Holy-Grail Product My 73-Year-Old Mom Uses to Make Her Look 20 Years Younger

The Holy-Grail Product My 73-Year-Old Mom Uses to Make Her Look 20 Years Younger

    [ad_1]

I’m pretty lucky. Not only do I have a job where I get to experience, write, and learn about the newest and most exciting products, treatments, and trends hitting the beauty industry, but I also get to interview and get to know the artists and experts who execute and create them. That said, I also feel lucky to have a beauty-loving, 73-year-old makeup-artist mom who I can consult about anything and everything. (My poor father never gets a word in when we have a family catch-up call. Sorry, dad!)

As a Tucson-based makeup expert who is obsessed with products and specializes in educating older women about makeup and skincare, my beautiful mom knows a thing or two when it comes to choosing the best products for mature skin. Oftentimes (but not always), when I try to foist my favorite formulas on her, she turns up her nose or doesn’t like them, citing reasons I simply don’t think of like wrinkles, pigmentation, and other skin issues that arise as we get older. Sure, I might have annoying breakouts that my mom doesn’t have to deal with, but she battles fine lines, dryness, wrinkles, age spots, and other symptoms of aging skin I (obviously) lack experience with.

It’s no secret my mom looks about 20 years younger than her actual age, and in addition to taking really amazing care of her skin, her expert knowledge about strategic products like foundation, highlighter, and concealer also contributes to people never guessing her true 73 years. Ahead, she’s sharing the 10 best concealers for mature skin she uses and/or recommends to her older clientele. Then, because I can never resist adding my two cents, I’m following up with all of my favorites, which, thanks to their hydrating and skin-perfecting perks, are great options as well. Keep scrolling for 20 of the best concealers for mature skin that money can buy.
