To get a better understanding of how this industry has been contributing to environmental waste, I asked Mia Davis, the director of environmental & social responsibility at Credo, to weigh in. According to Davis, more than 120 billion beauty packages are created annually, and only a small fraction of these (less than 9%!) are recycled. Even fewer are refilled or reused. That means these materials, most of which are plastic, are being landfilled, incinerated, or stuck as toxic pollution.
The good news? There is a positive shift happening in the beauty industry. For example, Credo has launched its Sustainable Packaging Guidelines, and its first milestone in 2021 was to eliminate single-use items like masks, pads, and sample sachets.
“We’re really hoping that other retailers and brands will join us: Let’s stop making stuff that will never be recycled or reused,” Davis said.
With the pressure on brands to use more sustainable packaging, as consumers and individuals, we can take steps to help reverse this environmental impact now as well. This month, I challenged myself to take a critical look at the makeup I use and see if I could find comparable sustainable and package-free alternatives.

Concealer is a do-it-all makeup product (IMO), but that doesn’t mean one single formula should carry all the weight. Meaning? You should use more than one concealer shade on different regions of your face! Your skin, after all, contains a range of shades and undertones, and simply swiping on the same formula may make your complexion fall flat.
Don’t just take my word for it: “The color you need to match your forehead will probably be a slightly different shade than that of your cheek or nose,” iconic makeup artist and brand founder of Jones Road Beauty Bobbi Brown shares on an episode of Clean Beauty School. In fact, some beauty fans will even use multiple different shades of concealer in lieu of foundation to contour, highlight, and cover up blemishes. To each their own—but if you’re hoping to disguise dark spots of any kind, you’ll want to consider your shade selection very closely.
See, you shouldn’t just grab the same concealer you use for your under-eyes and dab it on your blemishes. “If you used the shade you used for your under-eyes on any other part of the face, it would make that area stand out instead of blend in,” Brown adds. You might think a lighter shade would, well, lighten up the dark spot, but trust us—it will only make the discoloration more apparent.
Rather, choose your true shade match or even half a shade darker than your usual foundation; that will actually help the spot fade into your skin. From there, make sure you’re very precise with the product and try not to cover outside the discoloration. Primers can be such a controversial topic in the beauty industry. While some (like myself) completely swear by them, others can’t stand them or think they’re complete pointless. I will tell you something, though. In my opinion, they’re a must if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Oiliness can be tough to deal with—especially if you have combination skin that gets both dry and oily sometimes. After speaking to countless experts including makeup artists and dermatologists, they all seem to agree that oily skin = unbalanced skin. The deeper layers of your skin might actually be dehydrated—when that happens, it tends to start producing more oil on the surface to overcompensate for the dryness.
I found that this was definitely the case for me, but it can also take time (and the right skincare) to bring balance back to your skin. I’ve found that using a serum with multiple molecular weights of hyaluronic acid has been a game changer. Hyaluronic acid is lightweight and helps bind water to the skin to decrease moisture loss and leave it more balanced. In the meantime, though, if you have oilier skin, you can definitely try a primer that’s mattifying and noncomedogenic (meaning it won’t clog your pores) to keep your makeup from melting into a mess within a few hours. While scrolling through TikTok recently, I discovered an emerging makeup trend that doesn’t seem to have that much coverage yet, but will undeniably grow in popularity as we race towards the cooler months. It’s called “Cold Girl” makeup: a serotonin-filled, ultra-feminine, offshoot of the “clean girl” makeup trend that’s been taking over my “For You” Page.

I’ll admit, I’m such a ride-or-die for my signature beauty look of a cat-eye and a red lip that I cling to it more often than I should. I can’t help it, I’m the kind of person who loves looking glamorous, but wants to attain it in the least amount of time as possible. Not to toot our own horn, but we’ve been talking about skin cycling years before it blew up on social media. As a kid and teenager, I spent hours in my bathroom grooming myself. Looking back, that might have seemed a little vain, but it was less about vanity and more about curiosity. I loved experimenting with new products even if the ads on television and in magazines weren’t reflective of my skin and hair needs as a young Black girl. But at the time, as I absorbed all of the stories and images in the magazines I begged my mom for in the checkout line at the grocery store, I knew I wanted my career to be like the names I saw in the bylines on each page.
Now, here I am, but in the digital version. And, I have to say, I’m often in awe that this is my career. How many of us actually get to do what we love for a living? Well, at least, I hope she’d think I was kinda cool.
These days my beauty needs go well beyond glittery lip glosses and hair gels to lay my baby hairs. As I lean into my late 30s, my goal isn’t perfection or defying aging.
