    I allot myself about 10 minutes of TikTok time every day: I watch TikToks while I brush my teeth and do my skincare routine, and anything longer makes me feel like I’m melting my brain. I’m not exactly the friend that you can make a TikTok reference to. Still, as a beauty editor, I like to keep up on the trends—these days, TikTok is the place to find out burgeoning beauty trends before they really hit the mainstream.

    I took to TikTok to learn some of the most popular beauty trends of spring 2023. From white eyeliner to “angel eyes” to bright lipstick, this year is certainly set to be a fun one in the makeup realm, according to TikTok. 

    While it may be fun to watch TikToks on beauty trends, the real question is if they’re actually wearable in day-to-day life (or if they even look good outside of a phone screen). I enlisted the help of my three best (and most honest) friends to tell me which trends are hit or miss in the real world.     Tinted moisturizers were never really my thing in the past. Even now, I consider myself a full-coverage-foundation kind of gal, but I’ve been open to trying new things. I’ve mostly steered clear of tinted moisturizers because my skin can be finicky. It suffers from dehydration but can still get oily on the surface, an issue that’s no fun if your skin is also sensitive and acne prone (like mine). Now that I’ve finally nailed down a skincare routine that works for me and keeps my skin clear, I’d like to start experimenting with tinted moisturizers for lighter coverage. 

    Although my acne has gotten a lot better, the oil issue still seems to rear its ugly head. That’s why I decided to ask board-certified dermatologist Lauren Penzi, MD, for advice on the matter. She offered some great tips for those with a similar skin type who would like to shop around for a good tinted moisturizer for oily skin. She says to avoid occlusive ingredients in a moisturizer that can clog your pores like paraffin, mineral oil, lanolin, and petroleum. She also mentions that there might be a few other tweaks needed to make sure your skincare routine is optimized for your skin type. “Avoid alcohol-based products that seem to temporarily help but, in the long run, make skin more oily as the skin tries to compensate for the sebum that is lost by producing more oil,” she says.     Take it from someone who had to learn the hard way: The right set of brushes can totally change how your makeup looks for the better. I’m not sure what I was doing before I invested in a good set of foundation and concealer brushes, but I will say that since I’ve been using them, my makeup looks smoother, more natural, and takes far less time to apply. I know that sounds like a train you want to hop on, so you’re going to want to pay attention. 

    Concealer, in particular, can be tricky to apply without going overboard, right? Using a good brush can change all that—especially if you’re applying it in the under-eye area. Makeup artists have a few tips for us in this regard. Editorial makeup artist Sara Talias says, “The trick to applying concealer with a brush is to use a very small amount of concealer and start on the inner corner of the eye where there is typically the most darkness, applying the product in a stamping motion,” she says. “Working the concealer into the skin in this way ensures you get maximum coverage with the least amount of product. Too much concealer under the eye will crease and actually accentuate dry skin.” 

    Celebrity makeup artist Allison Kaye also has another key tip to ensure flawless application. “When applying concealer with a brush, don’t swipe the product back and forth, as it will cause it to disappear. So instead of asking for relationship advice, I asked d’Artois how to best practice self-love. “Self-pleasure,” she told me. “Whether you’re reaching for your favorite decadent chocolate or pleasure device, I always suggest people offer the love they would like to receive on Valentine’s Day to themselves—coupled or single. Carving out time to not walk through life on autopilot but to really be present and enjoy yourself is a little act of self-celebration that can refill your cup. When choosing the self-love practice you want to embark on, I suggest opting for something that engages multiple if not all of your senses! This can be a great way to drop back into your body and connect with your surroundings.”

    For the side sleepers out there, this may be bad news. “Sleeping on one side is actually pretty detrimental because the friction is breaking down the muscle, making the face slack a bit faster on one side,” Healy explains. 

    What’s more, sleeping on one side actually affects the rate at which your brow hairs shed. “The increase in friction can cause the brow hairs to shed faster, especially in the tail of the brow,” Healy explains. In turn, this can cause thinning of the brow and an early cut-off. 

    “However, if you naturally have very strong, conditioned brow hairs that are well-rooted, this shouldn’t be as big of a problem,” he notes. Yep, just another reason to add a brow serum to your beauty routine. 

    If you’re truly concerned about how sleeping on one side will impact your skin or brows, you can try to switch to sleeping on your back. The transition isn’t always easy, but it is certainly possible. 

    Healy also recommends investing in a silk pillowcase. This will help decrease friction and prevent threads tugging at the brow hairs. Plus, your hair and skin will thank you, too.

    Her favorite mermaidcore look that she created for a client was a mix of Euphoria glam and aquatic inspiration. “There are so many ways to draw inspiration to create a mermaidcore look,” says Braha. “My take would be open, fluffy brows, a wash of lavenders or sheer aqua blue across the lids, or a pop of color in the inner corner of the eyes. Glossy, fresh skin and lips complement this look well, too.” While mermaidcore may appear overwhelming to create at home, there are a few go-to products Braha suggests using Makeup by Mario’s Master Crystal Reflector in Quartz, Gucci’s Luminous Face and Lip Gloss, and Natasha Denona’s Mini Pastel Eyeshadow Palette.

Use Gucci’s face balm under makeup on cheekbones for a wearable dewy effect,” Braha begins. “Natasha Denona’s mini pastel palette has the perfect mermaid vibe and can be worn individually or paired together for dimension and depth on eyes.” She also proposes adding extra details like delicate jewels, stones, or pearls sporadically near the eyes for an ultra-chic approach to the trend.
