    • New deal sees Polymarket become official prediction market partner of MLS
    • Polymarket has similar deals with UFC and NHL
    • MLS season starts Feb. 22

Soccer United Marketing, the commercial arm of Major League Soccer (MLS), has teamed up with Polymarket in a multi-year deal, meaning soccer fans can now bet on outcomes.

In a statement, MLS announced that Polymarket is an official partner of MLS and an official partner of Leagues Cup in the United States. Polymarket will now serve as the official and exclusive prediction market partner of MLS, MLS All-Star Game, MLS Cup and Leagues Cup.

    More Engagement for Fans

Both sides are going to work together to tap into fan sentiment around key moments during MLS matches, including building new experiences across MLS digital platforms allowing fans to engage more, while tapping into the burgeoning popularity of prediction markets.

Last November, TKO, the company behind UFC and Zuffa Boxing, announced a similar deal with Polymarket, and Saturday night during UFC 324 in Las Vegas, that partnership was on display.

    Prediction Markets: Multi-Year Deal

Those tuned into the broadcast on Paramount+ saw a big Polymarket presence, including seeing their television screen split during key moments of the Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje interim lightweight title bout, for example, with huge fluctuations in share prices of outcomes of the bout. Pimblett came into the Octagon as the favourite, then Gaethje took over the five-round fight, with devastating punches, bloodying up Pimblett and eventually winning in a unanimous decision. Pimblett even walked into the Octagon before the fighter introductions wearing a diamond Polymarket necklace.

Polymarket also has a partnership with the NHL, announced last October. No partnerships yet with NFL, MLB or NBA.

As soccer’s audience continues to grow and evolve in the U.S., fans are looking for new ways to engage more deeply with the game,” said Shayne Coplan, Founder and CEO of Polymarket. “Through our partnership with MLS and Leagues Cup, we can surface real-time collective sentiment around key moments, matches, and season-long storylines, giving fans a more interactive, data-driven way to experience the game and engage with the world’s most popular sport.”

Guardrails to Protect Integrity of the Sport

MLS said in a statement today that there will be safeguards in place to protect the integrity of league matches, including independent monitoring or trading activities.

“As MLS continues to grow, innovation remains central to how we engage fans and evolve the league,” said Gary Stevenson, MLS Deputy Commissioner and President of Soccer United Marketing. “Partnering with Polymarket allows us to integrate prediction markets as a new fan engagement format and position MLS as an early leader among global soccer properties.”

The new MLS season gets started on Feb. 22.

  • Minnesota United FC starts training camp with new head coach, Cameron Knowles

    [ad_1]

With Eric Ramsay gone, on Monday the Minnesota United announced they have promoted former assistant Cameron Knowles to be their new head coach. It coincided with the first day of training camp.

Loons veteran midfielder Wil Trapp said he wasn’t surprised by the timing of Ramsay’s departure.

“He’s a very calculated, very smart, very intelligent person who knew what he wanted when he came to MLS, and I think he achieved that. So when opportunities come, I don’t think the club stood in his way and I think he knew what he wanted,” Trapp said.

“There were always rumors around him kind of constantly throughout his time here,” said defender Michael Boxall, entering his 10th season with the club. “But obviously, a good opportunity for him. Super grateful for all he did for me personally and for this club.”

Knowles, who was the United’s interim manager in early 2024, will hold his introductory press conference on Tuesday.

“I can’t say enough positive things about Cam,” Trapp said. “The person, the leader, the motivator. Someone who humbly puts in their work every single day, and has been doing it since he had his three games in 2024, then became an assistant and now is back at the helm. I couldn’t be more pleased for him.”

It was an offseason of major upheaval for the Loons. Robin Lod, the club’s all-time leading goal scorer, left for Chicago.

“Less about him out there playing with me, I think more away from the field,” Boxall said. “Obviously our families were very close and we spent a lot of time off the field together, so I think that part we’ll miss the most.”

Reigning goalie of the year Dayne St. Clair departed, too. Drake Callender will be the new man in goal.

“Was looking for somewhere that maybe wanted me and needed me and was interested in me,” Callender said. “Being here, being part of the club. Once I heard that, I was really prepared to make the move.”

  • Eric Ramsay leaves Minnesota United to coach West Brom in England’s second-tier Championship

    [ad_1]

The Minnesota United on Sunday announced head coach Eric Ramsay will be leaving the club to join West Bromwich Albion.

Minnesota was Ramsay’s first head coaching job after working alongside Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

West Brom is currently 18th in England’s second-tier Championship.

The announcement was made after West Brom beat Swansea in a penalty shootout to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

James Morrison was in charge of West Brom for the FA Cup game following the dismissal of Ryan Mason on Tuesday.

Minnesota United chief soccer officer and sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad said “Eric was instrumental in shaping a team that reflects the values of our club and our community.”

Minnesota said it is “currently in the final stages of selecting its next head coach” and will have more to share in the coming days.

“We’re incredibly grateful for our time in Minnesota,” said Ramsay, who will bring assistant Dennis Lawrence with him. “We’ve made friends for life, experienced a part of the world we may never otherwise have seen, and shared something truly special as a family. Two seasons have flown by, but I’ll look back with nothing but fond memories and real pride in what we achieved together.”

  • Minnesota United topped by expansion side San Diego FC 1-0 in Western Conference semifinal

    [ad_1]

Anders Dreyer scored in the second half and Pablo Sisniega made three saves to lead expansion side San Diego FC to a 1-0 victory over Minnesota United on Monday night in a Western Conference semifinal at a sold-out Snapdragon Stadium.

San Diego will host the second-seeded Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday with a chance to play for the MLS Cup on the line. No. 5 seed New York City FC travels to play third-seeded Miami for the Eastern Conference title, in Saturday’s first match.

Dreyer, the Newcomer of the Year and Best XI honoree, used assists from Corey Baird and Jeppe Tverskov to find the net in the 72nd minute. The 27-year-old midfielder from Denmark had 19 goals and 19 assists during the regular season to help San Diego earn the top seed. He has four goals and two assists in his first four playoff appearances.

It was Tverskov’s first postseason goal contribution in his fourth appearance. Baird’s first three postseason assists have come this season. He had one goal in 10 prior playoff appearances with three different clubs.

Sisniega, who made only four regular-season starts for San Diego, earned his second clean sheet in his second postseason start. He made a dazzling save in the 64th minute to keep it scoreless.

Dayne St. Clair did not have a save in his 11th career playoff start for No. 4 seed Minnesota United, which made a second straight exit in the conference semis in its sixth trip to the postseason since joining the league in 2017.

Coach Mikey Varas’ San Diego squad set MLS records for an expansion team with 19 victories and 63 points on the way to a first-place finish.

  • Apple will bring MLS games to its normal TV subscription

    [ad_1]

Apple is retiring its Major League Soccer Season Pass and including the next season of MLS as part of its normal Apple TV subscription. Details of a new partnership agreement between Apple and MLS were first reported by The Athletic. The arrangement appears to be similar to the one the company made in October to bring F1 races to all subscribers.

Starting in 2026, all MLS games will be available to Apple TV subscribers. That includes regular season matches, and annual events like the Leagues Cup tournament, the MLS All-Star Game, the Campeones Cup and the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

First announced in 2022, the MLS Season Pass remains one of Apple’s most significant forays into sports programming to date. As part of its original agreement with MLS, Apple became the exclusive way soccer fans streamed MLS games globally, eliminating any kind of regional blackout as long as Apple TV was accessible. That level of access will now continue, without the need to pay $15 a month for MLS Season Pass. You just need an Apple TV subscription to keep up with your favorite team.

“We’re thrilled to bring MLS to more fans around the world next season on Apple TV,” Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, shared in the announcement. “Every match, all in one place, alongside incredible Apple Originals — it’s a win for fans everywhere.”

While Apple hasn’t succeeded in locking down NBA or NFL games like its competitors Amazon and Google, the company has been slowly growing its sports ambitions. Apple’s Friday Night Baseball streams now seem modest in comparison to what it’s doing with the MLS and F1. The company’s five-year F1 deal includes every Grand Prix race, along with practice, qualifying and sprint sessions. With the FIFA World Cup on the way in 2026, the company’s new MLS deal is also impeccably timed.

Update, November 12, 5:03PM ET: Added details and a quote from Apple’s official announcement.

  • MNUFC prepares for playoff run at Allianz Field against Seattle

    [ad_1]

MLS playoffs are officially underway, and the Minnesota United FC have a shot at a decent post-season run. The begin the best of 3 first round against the Seattle Sounders at Allianz Field on Monday, October 27 with a 8 p.m. kickoff.

The United are more motivated than ever after a disappointing loss in their last game of the regular season against the LA Galaxy last weekend.
Part of their confidence going forward is having forward Kelvin Yeboah back from injury.

He was active at practice in Blaine on Wednesday ahead of the playoffs, and says he’s feeling hopeful.

“I deeply believe we can go all the way,” said Yeboah.

Yeboah carries more weight in the playoffs with his strong striker counterpart, Tani Oluwaseyi, leaving in a historic transfer to Villareal CF earlier this year.

“This playoffs I think they will need me, and I will do my best and give my 100% and help the team the best that I can,” said Yeboah.

In a 4-5 seeded match up, the United, seed 4, face the Seattle Sounders, seed 5, in the first round of the playoffs. Seattle is a team they swept 2-0 in the regular season, including a game on the road.

“We do take some confidence from the games that we’ve had so far. It was a really big away performance, a really defining away performance, when we went [to Seattle] and won,” said Eric Ramsey, Head Coach of the MNUFC.

“It’s going to be difficult, but we’re up for the challenge,” said Julian Gressel, MNUFC midfielder.

Gressel has a lot of optimism heading into Monday.

“We could be on vacation right now, we could be done. So we’ll get a chance to play, had a good season, get to have a home game first playoff game, I think the mood is good,” said Gressel.

  • Nascimento, Paintsil lead Galaxy to 2-1 win over Minnesota in regular-season finale

    [ad_1]

Matheus Nascimento and Joseph Paintsil each scored a goal on Saturday night to help the LA Galaxy beat Minnesota United 2-1 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Minnesota (16-8-10) is fourth in the Western Conference and will play fifth-seeded Seattle in the best-of-three first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Nascimento gave LA (7-18-9) the lead for good when he scored on first-touch shot from the center of the area in the 12th minute.

Paintsil, on the counter-attack, outraced the defense down the left sideline and then bounced a low shot off the far post and then slammed home his own rebound to make it 2-0 in the 52nd.

Joaquín Pereyra scored in the fifth minute stoppage time for Minnesota.

A couple minutes later, the Galaxy’s Edwin Cerrillo was shown a yellow card in the 67th and another, resulting in a red, in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

  • Orlando City to play in Wild Card game after losing Decision Day match

    [ad_1]

Orlando City needed to win its Decision Day match against Toronto FC to avoid playing in the Wild Card game, but instead were outperformed at BMO Field. The Lions lost 4-2 to Toronto in the final game of the MLS regular season on Saturday night, setting up Orlando as the No. 9 seed heading into Wednesday’s Wild Card game on the road against the Chicago Fire. Toronto, which had nothing to play for after missing the playoffs for a fifth consecutive year, got the scoring underway early on. A strike from outside the box from Jonathan Osorio put TFC up 1-0 in the seventh minute. That was followed by a pair of goals from Djordje Mihailovic in the 34th and 48th minutes. David Brekalo put Orlando on the scoresheet after finishing a ball from Marco Pasalic in the 54th minute, but Toronto’s Deandre Kerr added a fourth goal in the 61st minute. Duncan McGuire added a second goal for Orlando in stoppage time. “The disappointment is obvious because the performance was not good at all,” said Orlando head coach Oscar Pareja. “We need to face the worst-case scenario that’s on paper, and we’re there and we will recover from this moment and will be ready for that game on Wednesday. It’s a tough night for sure.” The takeaway Defensively, Orlando City struggled with dealing with Toronto’s counter. With Alex Freeman playing higher up the field, it required Brekalo to cover much more space on the right side of the field. • MLS team pledges ‘queer’ community support after sponsoring ex-UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas event

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club was one of two professional sports teams to sponsor Rainbow Lab’s Violet Visionary Awards on Thursday night.

The award ceremony honored former UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas with a “Voice of Inspiration” award, which is given to “an individual whose story and actions ignite hope and courage within the LGBTQ+ community.”

Thomas, a transgender woman, won a women’s national title in 2022, which became the catalyst in the national debate over transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.

Thomas gave a speech at the event, which the Los Angeles Dodgers also sponsored. Neither the Dodgers nor LAFC responded to emails from Fox News Digital regarding their thoughts on Thomas receiving the award.

However, a spokesperson for the soccer club did speak at the event, which OutKick attended, as Daisy Chavez showed support for the LGBTQ community.

“We are a community of queer fans, local leaders, supporters, and activists of the Los Angeles Football Club. And if you don’t know, we follow sports because we’ve always been here,” Chavez said. “We’ve been athletes, we’ve been fans, we’ve been lovers of the sports.

“And so our presence with this club reminds not just the club, the community, but the world that we’ve always been here. And so we cheer, full of joy and love for our local community, but also we represent for our queer folks, and we’re so proud of being there every step of the way.”

Riley Gaines, who competed against Thomas and tied the former UPenn swimmer at the national tournament, was not pleased with Thomas being given the award.

“Voice of inspiration? The only people Will Thomas inspires are other men who realized you can take everything from women – our records, our spaces, our opportunities – and still get a standing ovation,” Gaines told OutKick, using Thomas’ birth name. “It’s 2025, not 2020. We’re done pretending that’s courage.”

  • Apple is bringing live NBA games to the Vision Pro in 2026

    [ad_1]

Apple is partnering with Spectrum SportsNet to stream select Los Angeles Lakers games directly to the Apple Vision Pro during the 2025-2026 basketball season. The games will be filmed in the Apple Immersive video format, the same VR-friendly filming style the company used to capture the Metallica concert film it released earlier this year.

Beyond giving you a reason to blow the dust off your $3,500 Apple Vision Pro, watching the games in-headset will showcase “perspectives impossible to capture in traditional broadcasts,” Apple claims. Live games will be limited to headset owners living in the Lakers’ regional broadcast territory (Southern California, Hawaii and parts of southern Nevada) and will likely require a subscription to view, but Apple says the full replays and highlights will also be accessible in “select countries and regions from both the SportsNet and NBA apps.” There’s no schedule of games available yet, but Apple and Spectrum say they’ll announce their final plans this fall, with the first games streaming early 2026.

While the general consensus on the Vision Pro is that it makes for a great media consumption device, sports programming that takes advantage of its unique features has been largely missing. Apple makes it easy to watch things like Friday Night Baseball and Major League Soccer, but the NBA is the only mainstream sports league trying to offer an experience that’s specific to the Vision Pro. Beyond playing live games, the NBA visionOS app can display real-time player stats, stream multiple games at once in multiview and show you a tabletop view of games, complete with a 3D court and tiny players.

Now that Apple is reportedly prioritizing smart glasses over a lighter and cheaper version of the Vision Pro, the best thing the company can do is supply existing owners with new things to watch. Not everyone loves the Lakers, but if it opens the door to more live sports in the future, that’s only a good thing.

    [ad_1]

Nectarios Triantis scored midway through the second half to help Minnesota United earn a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.

Triantis found the net unassisted in the 65th minute for the equalizer for Minnesota United (15-7-10). It was his second goal in his third career appearance.

Neither team scored until defender Rafael Santos scored unassisted in the first minute of stoppage time to give Colorado (11-14-7) the lead at halftime. It was Santos’ first goal in his fifth appearance for the Rapids after failing to score in 17 appearances with Orlando City to begin the season.

  • How Ricardo Moreira helped build Orlando City’s scouting network

How Ricardo Moreira helped build Orlando City’s scouting network

    [ad_1]

Ricardo Moreira jokingly says he can almost field a starting eleven when he takes a glance at the scouting team he’s been able to assemble during the last couple of years at Orlando City. But almost six years ago, when the Brazilian arrived at Orlando, the thought of that was just a dream, and far from reality.“When I first started, we had one scout,” Moreira told WESH 2. “Today, we have Felipe Lema, our chief scout, who’s been with us for the last three years. We have another six scouts, including for our academy, and we have a part-time scout who’s fully dedicated to helping us in our college efforts.”In counting, Lema is the team’s chief scout. That’s followed by Oliver Minatel, who’s the scouting coordinator. Orlando then has a scout embedded in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and a European lead scout responsible most recently for recruiting Heine Gikling Bruseth. The other members of Orlando City’s scouting team cover the academy and college efforts. That’s enough scouts, for now, to earn praise from other Major League Soccer clubs, Moreira says. But Moreira adds besides the large contingent of scouts the team possesses; it’s been under his leadership that other MLS clubs have poached his vanguards, losing scouts to Austin FC and New York Red Bull in the past. But perhaps Orlando is a place to learn and grow. Leonardo Baldo, the team’s head scout from 2019 to 2021, moved to AS Monaco in France to be the team’s South American scout before returning to MLS to be the current director of scouting at FC Dallas. The EvolutionMoreira joined Orlando City in late 2018 as its director of scouting. In 2022 he was promoted to assistant general manager and technical director and earlier this year, Moreira was bumped up to vice president of soccer operations after signing a new contract with the club through the 2025 season. While his ascension within Orlando’s technical staff has been gradual, he still oversees the team’s scouting efforts. “It’s still one of my responsibilities,” said Moreira. “It’s my bread and butter, it’s one of the most important areas of the club with the amount of talent it brings in.” Things began to take more shape in 2020 when the team started building its academy and Orlando City B squads, seeing a need for scouts to help grow both to solidify a pipeline into the MLS team. Moreira, though, points at the investment from the Wilf Family ownership for growing that. “The investment and resources that we have since the Wilfs arrived in terms of scouting has been great,” said Moreira. “They believe in what we’ve been doing; they believe in the project and in our ideas.” “We’ve developed an analytical approach to scouting in the last couple of years,” Moreira added. “We have an analytics department that develops for us our own software and to control our reports and develop our algorithm that translates what else we want on the field to what we’re going to see in video to see what’s coming up.” For Orlando City goakeeper coach Cesar Baena, the scouting from the team has allowed him to be set up for success. “I’ve worked in national teams, so you’re used to working with elite players. In this case with Pedro , I had the opportunity to select him to be part of Orlando City,” Baena told WESH. “One of the first things Oscar asked me when I first arrived was for a starting goalkeeper. At the time, the team already had one, so I was handed a list of 18 players from different nationalities, I had to choose and luckily, I chose well, and we’ve had Pedro since.”Trusting the ProcessBefore signing a new contract with Orlando in February, there was reported interest from other MLS clubs looking to sign Moreira. With the opportunities there for taking, Moreira opted to remain in Orlando for now. “I believe in this project. I have a lot of autonomy, I have a lot of responsibilities that, probably maybe elsewhere, I wouldn’t have,” said Moreira. “But I also know, in the long term, we want to have a sustainable success and clear strategy. And for the owners, it’s better for them because it matters for them, so we’re building the stones to be a successful club.” Moreira knows he’ll eventually leave the team. Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations Luiz Muzzi has said in the past that he sees Moreira becoming a sporting director or general manager of a team in the future. For Moreira, that’s likely the next natural step. “That’s obviously on my horizon, and I want this to happen sooner rather than later,” Moreira said. “I’m grateful to Luiz for letting me act as a sporting director as much as he can. He’s very collaborative and supportive of people growing so if it wasn’t for his support, I wouldn’t be in any sort of conversations regarding this next step of my career.”

Ricardo Moreira jokingly says he can almost field a starting eleven when he takes a glance at the scouting team he’s been able to assemble during the last couple of years at Orlando City.

But almost six years ago, when the Brazilian arrived at Orlando, the thought of that was just a dream, and far from reality.

“When I first started, we had one scout,” Moreira told WESH 2. “Today, we have Felipe Lema, our chief scout, who’s been with us for the last three years. We have another six scouts, including for our academy, and we have a part-time scout who’s fully dedicated to helping us in our college efforts.”

In counting, Lema is the team’s chief scout.

    The Evolution

Moreira joined Orlando City in late 2018 as its director of scouting.

“It’s my bread and butter, it’s one of the most important areas of the club with the amount of talent it brings in.”

Things began to take more shape in 2020 when the team started building its academy and Orlando City B squads, seeing a need for scouts to help grow both to solidify a pipeline into the MLS team.

Moreira, though, points at the investment from the Wilf Family ownership for growing that.

“The investment and resources that we have since the Wilfs arrived in terms of scouting has been great,” said Moreira. “They believe in what we’ve been doing; they believe in the project and in our ideas.”

“We’ve developed an analytical approach to scouting in the last couple of years,” Moreira added. “We have an analytics department that develops for us our own software and to control our reports and develop our algorithm that translates what else we want on the field to what we’re going to see in video to see what’s coming up.”

For Orlando City goakeeper coach Cesar Baena, the scouting from the team has allowed him to be set up for success.

“I’ve worked in national teams, so you’re used to working with elite players. In this case with Pedro [Gallese], I had the opportunity to select him to be part of Orlando City,” Baena told WESH. “One of the first things Oscar asked me when I first arrived was for a starting goalkeeper. At the time, the team already had one, so I was handed a list of 18 players from different nationalities, I had to choose and luckily, I chose well, and we’ve had Pedro since.”

Rapids use last-minute header to force penalties, beat Club León in shootout

    [ad_1]

If not for Rafael Navarro’s first goal in eight games in the last minute of second-half stoppage time, the Colorado Rapids’ exit from Leagues Cup would have rested on a lengthy, controversial reversal of an offside call. Instead, the Rapids won in penalties, 4-3, after a 1-all tie in regulation.

At first glance, Club León’s Iván Moreno was called offside in the buildup of a play on a breakaway. Rapids keeper Zack Steffen saved Moreno’s 1-on-1 shot, but the ball bounced off the post and onto Edgar Guerra’s feet for an easy tap-in in the 79th minute.

A lengthy VAR review took place when the linesman’s flag went up. The crowd of 13,644 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park groaned in disagreement when the offside was overturned. The noise grew much louder when the replay was shown on the video board.

In order for an offsides call to be overturned, the error in judgment must be clear and obvious. Midfielder Cole Bassett stuck around referee Julio Luna during the nearly five-minute VAR review, but couldn’t get an explanation out of him for the duration.

“(Luna) did not say much, to be honest. Looking back, I don’t think it was (clear and obvious),” Bassett said. “But they made that decision, we had to respond to it afterwards and we all looked at each other and said ‘10 minutes’ and we went up from there.”

Then Navarro struck in the 90+7th minute when Bassett found Keegan Rosenberry, who flicked the ball onto a wide open Navarro for a tap-in header. The goal was Navarro’s first in eight matches across all competitions and the first since he signed a permanent deal to the Rapids.

Then after missing his previous three penalty attempts this season, he buried his try in the penalty shootout after regulation ended scoreless.

“It was a very tense moment and you have to be very calm in those moments,” Navarro said through Rapids language specialist Andre Hilf. “Everybody has supported me, so getting there, to be able to take the PK and working towards that has been special.”

Leagues Cup rules force penalty kicks if the score is tied after regulation. And with a spot in the round of 32 on the line, Djordje Mihailovic came up big with the Rapids’ first goal of the shootout in his first match back from the Olympics in Paris. Bassett, Navarro and Moïse Bombito all made their attempts while Andreas Maxsø missed his.

Steffen came up with the shootout’s first save on Leon’s third attempt and won it with another save on León’s final attempt. With six saves in regulation, Steffen was easily the Rapids’ best player of the night.

Rapids coach Chris Armas praised the keeper for the way he stepped up in the moment. For Steffen, an all-around night of that nature was much needed.

“It’s been an up-and-down year for myself, so it feels good,” Steffen said. “It gives me confidence to just keep going.”

The Rapids will play against FC Juarez in the round of 32 on Friday after being stunned by Portland by a score of 4-0 last Thursday. In the tournament’s second iteration, this will be the Rapids’ first time in the knockout stages.

For Armas, the preparation for the match will be more about his own squad’s recovery than it will be about scouting Juarez. The one thing he’d change about the way his team played against León will certainly require the extra rest.

“The thing I’m asking for is tempo to start with, tempo to play with on the front foot and to be very proactive in all phases,” Armas said. “We’ll look to see if there are tendencies or any similarities with Juarez and León, but it’s mostly going to be about us recovering, figuring out our lineup and how we want to get a tactical plan ready.”

DirecTV signs multiyear deal as kit sponsor for the MLS expansion San Diego FC

    [ad_1]

SAN DIEGO (AP) — DirecTV has signed a multiyear deal to become the jersey partner of the San Diego FC, its first foray into kit sponsorship in MLS while expanding its presence in the local sports market.

DirecTV will appear across the front of SDFC’s primary and secondary jerseys when the expansion club begins play in February.

“It’s always the most important commercial partnership, because it sits right on your heart, right on the front of your jersey,” said Tom Penn, San Diego FC’s CEO. “From that standpoint it’s really important to pick the right partner.”

Thursday’s announcement comes about five weeks after SDFC signed Mexican star Chucky Lozano to a four-year contract.

“It’s equally foundational,” Penn said. “There’s nothing more important than a foundational player, your foundational coach. Those kinds of things are critically important. But a foundational kit partner is a big deal. I don’t know how many tens, hundreds of thousands of jerseys we’ll end up seeing out in the community, but every single one of them is going to have DirecTV right across their heart. So. it’s woven into fabric, I guess pun intended, of the club.”

DirecTV sponsored the Holiday Bowl last year and remains in talks to sponsor the game moving forward. Holiday Bowl officials announced recently that after two years at Petco Park, the game will be moved to Snapdragon Stadium, which will be SDFC’s home pitch.

Bowl CEO Mark Neville said officials wanted to first sort out conference affiliations and are “working on it” as far as DirecTV’s continuing sponsorship.

“They love San Diego, they love soccer,” Penn said about the satellite TV provider, which is once again sponsoring the Soccer Champions Tour of friendlies involving European clubs in U.S. cities.

SDFC will become MLS’s 30th club. It is owned by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Tribe, the first Native American tribe to have an ownership stake in a professional soccer team. The ownership group also includes San Diego Padres star third baseman Manny Machado.

“It’s an exciting sponsorship deal here for us at DirecTV,” said Vince Torres, the chief marketing officer. “For us it really expands what we’re doing in the space of soccer. … Now we have this opportunity here and I think it’s fairly unique, with a big market right around the corner from our headquarters in L.A. that presented itself and we jumped all over it.”

DirecTV will also be involved in community outreach programs such as support for local nonprofits like Ronald McDonald House Charities and support for local active military and veterans.

San Jose Earthquakes fire head coach Luchi Gonzalez midway through his second season

    [ad_1]

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes have fired head coach Luchi Gonzalez, the team announced on Monday.

After guiding San Jose to the playoffs in his first year as head coach in 2023, the Quakes have fallen off this season. San Jose is currently the worst team in MLS with a record of 3-14-2.

On Saturday, the Quakes had one of their worst losses this season, falling to LAFC 6-2 on the road.

Gonzalez finished his tenure as San Jose’s head coach with a 14-28-17 record.

“We want to thank Luchi for his hard work, commitment to the club and professionalism,” said general manager Chris Leitch in a statement. “Luchi and his staff have worked extremely hard the past year and a half, but we have not met expectations this year as a club. We felt that we needed to make a change, and it was in the best interests of the club to move in a different direction.”

Gonzales was named head coach of the Quakes in August 2022, but took over before the 2023 MLS season following the conclusion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup where he was a top assistant for the U.S. Men’s National Team. San Jose finished the year 10-10-14, which secured them the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Quakes would fall in the Wild Card round to Sporting Kansas City.

San Jose had a Top-10 defense last season, giving up just 43 goals and recording 10 clean sheets. But through 19 games this season, the Quakes have given up a league-worst 51 goals and have a goal differential of -22.

“I want to thank ownership, leadership and our fans for the opportunity and the support they gave me during my time managing the Earthquakes,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “I am very grateful to all the staff and players that worked hard every day to improve our situation and wish them the very best moving forward.”

Assistant Ian Russell has been named the Interim coach.

Same thing, different day: Atlanta United falls at home 3-2 to rival Charlotte, suffers fifth straight home loss

    [ad_1]

Charlotte came into the match with a record of 6-4-6 and in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings. Atlanta (now 4-4-8 overall), though further down in the standings, brought momentum with them back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday. A victory at Inter Miami on Wednesday was the team’s first victory on the road this season. It didn’t matter, as Charlotte managed to win in Atlanta again, this time 3-2 in front of 61,209 fans.

The loss was the team’s fifth consecutive at home. “We are playing good, but when you don’t score the goals in key moments you suffer,” Atlanta United manager Gonzalo Pineda said after the match.

Atlanta, who will host D.C. United next Saturday (7:30 p.m. first kick), came into its game against Minnesota United FC on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium ninth in the Eastern Conference standings. Winless in its last four matches (three draws and a loss), Atlanta United was a point behind D.C. United and tied with Montreal FC with 12 points in the standings. With consecutive road matches in Cincinnati and Nashville on May 15 and 18, victories at home have quickly become paramount to staying in playoff contention.

That winless streak has now moved to five games following a 2-1 loss to Minnesota. Following the loss, Atlanta United manager Gonzalo Pineda was positive about how the team played and added that he feels the team is “fully committed” to what the goals for this season are.
