    Maggie Haberman has recalled a recent phone call she received from former President Donald Trump.

    Trump called The New York Times journalist to talk about his multiple civil and criminal cases. But much of what the Republican 2024 front-runner said “I didn’t report on,” Haberman told Gayle King and Charles Barkley on Wednesday’s episode of CNN’s “King Charles.”

    Haberman recalled Trump being “very upset” about some of her reporting in her 2022 book “Confidence Man: The Making Of Donald Trump And The Breaking Of America.”

    Allegations in the book included him flushing papers down White House toilets and having a racist response to staff members of color, which prompted him to repeatedly slam Haberman as “Maggot.”

    But Trump will “always engage with a reporter eventually if he sees some reason to,” Haberman explained to King and Barkley.

    “I was writing a story about how politics and the courts are going to converge again,” she said. Most of Trump’s comments “I didn’t report on” but “he thinks he’s his own best comms director and his own best defender and you’ll see more of that I suspect.”

    Haberman also predicted a grim few months ahead of the 2024 election.

    “I think this is going to be a pretty bleak campaign on many levels,” the New York Times journalist told Gayle King and Charles Barkley on Wednesday’s episode of CNN’s “King Charles.”

    “I just think that the way our campaigns are fought now are all about who you hate and who hates you back and I think you are going to see that to the nth degree in 2024,” she said.

    New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman suggested why former President Donald Trump may appear on the podcast of former boxer Mike Tyson.

    Haberman, talking to CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Friday, noted how Trump and Tyson are longtime associates with Trump “actually an advisor of sorts” to the athlete in the 1980s, who became one of his staunchest defenders when the boxer was convicted of rape.

    That Trump is, per Politico, reportedly in talks for an appearance on “Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson” is “not entirely surprising,” Haberman said in a video shared online by Mediaite.

    It also served as “a reminder that Trump has this unique niche that he tries to appeal to just in terms of cultural aspects of the country,” she added.

    “He has been a public figure, he has been a celebrity. He has also been sort of a sports figure. And he has been, or at least, connected to the world of wrestling, connected to the world of boxing,” she continued.

    Trump’s campaign has “long seen that as an advantage that it can press, especially as it tries to appeal to men,” Haberman said, acknowledging there was “a potential recipe for things getting a little complicated in an interview, but we’ll see.”

    Former President Donald Trump is “very anxious” ahead of a possible indictment over hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, according to The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman.

    Haberman made the comments as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg signaled his office may be close to filing charges against the former president, a historic moment linked to a $130,000 payment made to Daniels in the final days of Trump’s 2016 campaign. If he is indicted, it would be the first time a former president has been criminally charged.

    The investigation is just one of several Trump faces: Others are probing his effort to overturn 2020 election results in Georgia and his absconding with classified documents to his Mar-a-Lago estate.

    “He’s very anxious about the prospect of being indicted for a couple of reasons,” Haberman told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday. “Two things can be true at once. He is aware that there are reasons to believe this could help him politically … But he does not want to face getting arrested, which is what happens when you get indicted. You get fingerprinted. You get brought in. You have to ask for bail. None of that is something that he is excited about.”

    Haberman went on to reiterate her reporting last week that Team Trump is preparing for a broad attack against Bragg and his associates amid any charges, hoping to smear the group as Democratic agents and linking them to his 2024 rival, President Joe Biden. A spokesman for his campaign attacked the investigation last week as a “witch hunt,” threatening that Americans would “not tolerate” an indictment.

    Trump himself said this weekend his arrest was imminent, attempting to rally his supporters and calling for protests should any charges be levied against him.

    “THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE AND FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!” he wrote on his Truth Social site.

    Haberman said the post wasn’t part of any “grand plan” but still signaled his deep anxiety about the DA’s investigation.

    “He and his political folks are preparing for a huge blitz politically to push back on the Manhattan district attorney,” Haberman said. “I don’t think that his Truth Social post yesterday morning calling for protests was part of a grand plan, he did it and a bunch of his aides were surprised by it.”

    Of all the details about Donald Trump in Maggie Haberman’s new book “Confidence Man,” the New York Times reporter said the former president was most riled by her reporting that he tore up and flushed papers down White House toilets.

    “I think that was what upset him the most,” Haberman told Stephen Colbert on Tuesday’s broadcast of “The Late Show.”

    “He had an immediate and pronounced and angry reaction to that reporting when I put it out many months ago,” she continued. “He issued a statement, it was a phone call to the world, and I think his exact statement was, his question was, ‘Who would know that?’ Which I think was actually a literal question that he was asking, but he asked it out loud.”

    Trump in response to the story “spent some time asking his aides, ‘What do you think of that reporting?’” Haberman added. “Usually that’s because he’s trying to figure out whether something is damaging to him or not or how much more could be there.”

    When Haberman initially broke the news, Trump denied the claim. The reporter later tweeted photographs of papers, with what appeared to be Trump’s handwriting on them, clogging up toilet bowls.
