  • Nope, Fashion People Won’t Ever Ditch This Classic Handbag

Nope, Fashion People Won’t Ever Ditch This Classic Handbag

    [ad_1]

As overused as the quote from the late Yves Saint Laurent might be, it still rings true: “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” Especially within the context of modern fashion, which moves much faster than the pace of the industry in the ’60s during Laurent’s heyday. Like it or not, we live in an age when an It-item can be anointed overnight, only to lose its luster by lunchtime. Therefore, it can be hard to discern what’s worth your time and money. That’s where we come in, friends!

Although conventional wisdom would tell you that investing in those foundational basics is far more critical, there’s something else we feel is worth buying, too: bags. Before you discount our rationale, hear us out on this. Unlike apparel, luxury accessories are one of the few items that acquire value over time. But with so many different types of bags out there, how exactly does one pick a style that will stand the test of time? Return to brands with the “classic” feel built into their brand legacies, such as Saint Laurent, Chanel, and Burberry.

Although each of these luxury labels may have its own rich history, one particular bag style is universal among them: quilted handbags. Characterized by its attentiveness to craftsmanship, this style is typically made from leather, nylon, or cotton with an overlay quilted detail that gives the bag a raised texture. Because quilted bags have been reinvented in various textiles, sizes, and shapes over the years by luxury and affordable labels, it’s become a mainstay in the closets of chic people everywhere.

It’s one of the best investments you can make. Ahead, we’re proving that point as we’ve rounded up the 31 best quilted handbags at every price point based on quality, versatility, price, popularity, and shoppers’ reviews (when possible). Trust us when we say one of these bags will surely become an eternal part of your wardrobe.

  • The Benefits of Incorporating Sensory Engagement into Luxury Home Design – Sotheby´s International Realty | Blog

The Benefits of Incorporating Sensory Engagement into Luxury Home Design – Sotheby´s International Realty | Blog

    [ad_1]

Despina Laou – Greece Sotheby’s International Realty

Pause for a moment, and take a breath. Are you aware of all the ways your senses are being engaged by your surrounding environment?

Color palettes and natural light can evoke moods and emotions, while richly ornamented surfaces can amaze and excite. Sound, scents, and taste also have a subtle yet profound effect on your well-being. And how you feel emotionally is partly determined by what you’re feeling physically, which is why touch and texture are so crucial.

Architects, decorators, and landscapers are becoming ever more aware of the synergies between the sensory elements in the spaces they create—and today, the engagement of sight, sound, scent, taste, and touch are key factors in fashioning and furnishing luxury homes.

This is known as “sensory design.” At a time when homeowners are increasingly focused on wellness, it’s an emerging trend that promises serious staying power. Here’s why it’s essential to consider each sensory element in home design, as well as a best-in-class example of how it can be done with excellence.

    Sight

Despina Laou – Greece Sotheby’s International Realty

Colors and patterns can cause or alleviate stress. But although soft hues, soothing neutrals, and natural shades are typically associated with relaxation, remember that their impact is subjective and can be customized according to personal needs.

Despina Laou – Greece Sotheby’s International Realty

There are many other ways sensory design engages the sense of sight, as demonstrated by this hillside villa near Mykonos. The size and location of windows—as well as their window dressings—helps control the abundance and quality of light, as do lighting fixtures and their shades.

The views through those windows, as well as access to the outdoors, are also vital. With its vast patio and breathtaking sightlines, calming organic tones, and elimination of clutter through efficient storage, few homes prioritize visuality in such a thoughtful way.

    Sound

Guy Bradshaw – United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty

Both sound and silence contribute to effective sensory design. Spaces may be built to maximize acoustics, or they may be soundproofed to minimize noise. And though it may be counterintuitive, auditory installations can actually help improve a home’s tranquility—just think of the serene ambience cultivated by a shishi-odoshi bamboo fountain.

Guy Bradshaw – United Kingdom Sotheby’s International Realty

Water features, acting as conduits to replicate the peaceful soundscape of the natural world, are important factors in the sonic and aesthetic design of this contemporary country house close to Windsor Castle. With approximately 10 acres of pristine woodland and an award-winning garden, soothing sounds abound outdoors—and indoors, integrated audio technology allows homeowners to bring music into their living space as they please.

    Scent

Christopher Muller – Luxembourg Sotheby’s International Realty

The sense of smell is as fundamental to the aesthetics of a home as seeing and hearing. After all, the part of your brain that processes scent is contiguous with the regions responsible for memories, associations, and emotions, making this the most evocative of your senses.

Christopher Muller – Luxembourg Sotheby’s International Realty

There are many ways to optimize scent through sensory design. For example, materials such as cedar and eucalyptus have naturally pleasant odors, while candles and diffusers can enhance a space’s aromatherapeutic qualities. This luxurious loft apartment in Luxembourg-Dommeldange follows another best practice by nurturing ornamental greenery that purifies the air.

Along with fragrant vegetation, high-performance insulation and dual-flow ventilation keep the interiors of the home fresh and pollutant-free.

    Taste

Agnes Pinaire Propriétés Parisiennes Sotheby’s International Realty

The kitchen is the heart of any home, and is a high-traffic hub of gathering and activity. It’s also the area where the flavors of a favorite snack or a family recipe come alive, and where the sense of taste is most readily engaged. So the question is, can sensory design moderate this space without detracting from its deliciously one-of-a-kind character?

Agnes Pinaire Propriétés Parisiennes Sotheby’s International Realty

With gourmet appliances, ample cabinetry, and vibrant yet muted light shades in an eclectic mix of earth tones, this remarkable residence tucked away in the heart of Paris has the type of kitchen designed for good taste—literally and figuratively. Other sensory-forward features are its multiple dining areas—one that extends from the kitchen, and a second more formal setting—as well as a designated wine cellar on the basement level.

    Touch

Ged Hay and Nadia Hay – New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty

Whether it’s comfortable furniture, cozy rugs, plush upholstery, or abundant cushions and pillows, fabrics have always played a palpable role in sensory design for touch. But softness isn’t a prerequisite for a rich and rewarding haptic experience.

Ged Hay and Nadia Hay – New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty

Materials like wood, granite, and marble are highly tactile and engaging to the senses, and are used to great effect in this unique estate perched amid the mountains of New Zealand’s Motueka Valley. Red cedar and oak, as well as magnificent mantles of locally sourced stone, lend it the tangible warmth and charm of a European lodge. And since effective climate controls are another way to satisfy the sense of touch, all three of its fully equipped suites have fireplaces and air conditioning.

When homes are crafted to engage all five senses, they elevate the well-being of all who inhabit them. By intentionally and unobtrusively augmenting the sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and textures of living spaces, sensory design unlocks a whole new level of lifestyle.

What will constitute the ideal luxury residence in 2024? Before exploring the possibilities, revisit the luxury home highlights from 2023.

8 Trends I’m Stealing From the Fall 2024 Men’s Shows

    [ad_1]

Unlike the womenswear shows that can sometimes feel impossible to avoid on social media, if you don’t actively pay attention to or cover menswear, you might not have even known that the fall/winter 2024 shows just ended—apart from Loewe, where all the “baby girls” plus Taylor Russell played dress-up in high-waisted corduroys, fuzzy suede boots, and sparkly blazers. That’s where I come in. Even if you weren’t watching every livestreamed show as they took place like I was, you’d want to know the trends that debuted there and steal them.

From rugged work coats at Louis Vuitton and Prada (you might remember their lauded appearance in the spring/summer 2024 womenswear collection) to fashion-friendly, undeniably chic groutfits seen at Valentino and Sabato De Sarno’s first menswear show for Gucci, the eight trends ahead include a little bit of everything cool right now in fashion. Scroll down to meet them all.

Inside a Stylishly Updated Historic Home in Brooklyn – Sotheby´s International Realty | Blog

    [ad_1]

Not long after completing studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, C. P. H. Gilbert began establishing himself as a distinguished architect, ultimately enjoying a reputation for designing townhouses and mansions for industrialists and tycoons across New York. His oeuvre includes dozens of buildings in Manhattan but also properties on Long Island, upstate, and—like this distinctive residence—in Brooklyn’s illustrious Park Slope.

Brooklyn, New York | The Stein Team, Sotheby’s International Realty – Downtown Manhattan Brokerage

Luxurious modern homes updated with respect for their historic environs are often lauded for blending the old and the new. Dating to 1887, this handsome manor exemplifies that rarefied combination. Its brick and brownstone façade and a silhouette characteristic of late-19th-century designs belie the sleek, chic, and undeniably contemporary aesthetic of its interiors, which are the result of a meticulous three-year renovation helmed by Mary Burnham of MBB Architects.

A rarity in the area for its generous width, the five-level home is anchored by a sculptural staircase that links each of the floors while creating striking lines as well as alcoves for bookshelves and the display of art and sculpture. A southern orientation and numerous gracefully arching oversized windows allow many spaces to be flooded with natural light. The backyard garden is a green and serene oasis, an enviable escape amid Brooklyn’s bustle.

The building begins with living, dining, and entertaining spaces whose modern minimalism never jeopardizes their welcoming warmth. The Bulthaup kitchen features walnut cabinets and an impressive suite of appliances from Miele and Dacor. Just outside, a deck floats above the greenery of the garden below, with stairs descending into its lush midst.

One level above are three guest bedrooms and en suite baths along with a versatile fourth bedroom or playroom. On the fourth floor is the soundproof owner’s suite, a peaceful place of repose with11-foot ceilings, a gas fireplace, a custom walk-in closet and dressing room, and a travertine bath with a programmable multihead shower and a soaking tub. The nearby media room enjoys both blackout shades and access to a street-facing terrace framed in period brickwork.

Relaxation is the order of the day on the garden level, which offers a temperature-controlled 1,500-bottle wine cellar, a well-equipped mudroom, an additional bedroom and bath—ideal quiet quarters for guests or staff—and a casual living area with a wood-burning fireplace and floor-to-ceiling glass doors giving way to the verdant garden, which has been finished with pavers, decking, irrigation, lighting, and sound. The building’s rooftop has been transformed into two landscaped terraces with an alfresco fireplace, Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers, and skyline views.

While style is clearly paramount in this one-of-a-kind home, the practicalities of modern living are far from overlooked. The busy professional will appreciate the sunny, spacious office that accompanies the owner’s suite, while the fitness enthusiast will value the upper-level’s thoughtfully outfitted glass-enclosed gym. Creature comforts are seen to by motorized blinds, blackout shades, Warmboard radiant heating, dimmable LED lighting, multizone air conditioning, and whole-house vacuum, water filtration, humidification, dehumidification, Sonos sound, and Control4 systems. Prospect Park, local landmarks and attractions, and public transportation are all within easy reach. Meanwhile, mindfully retained vintage elements serve as subtle reminders of the home’s provenance and its enduring place in the ongoing story of New York.

The mention of Santa Monica typically conjures images of timeless recreation, entertainment, and diversion—the legendary ocean pier, Pacific Park’s solar-powered Ferris wheel, the historic Looff Hippodrome Carousel, the renowned aquarium, and nearby Muscle Beach. But the area is also a bastion of iconic California architecture, from its numerous Romanesque Revival, Art Deco, and Mediterranean-inspired landmarks to the classical Mission-style villas strewn across the city and the region as a whole.

Santa Monica, California | Marc Noah, Sotheby’s International Realty – Beverly Hills Brokerage

This inviting 1924 residence exemplifies a quintessential Southern California aesthetic, combining bespoke modern flair, fixtures, and finishes with such de rigueur Mission- and Spanish Colonial–style elements as earthy barrel-tiled roofing, graceful archways, warm terra-cotta flooring, vibrant tile accents, and the crisp contrast of white plaster walls and handsome, deeply hued ceiling beams and other woodwork. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail employed in a 2013 rebuild are readily apparent throughout the generous 4,351-square-foot floor plan.

The alluring spaces begin with a chic living room featuring a fireplace and French doors to the lush grounds and an office or library with a whimsical wall of shelving. Beyond are a sophisticated formal dining room that opens to a vine-draped covered terrace and a family room with a colorful tiled fireplace and access to an open terrace and a verdant backyard framed by tall privacy hedges and trees. Cooks of all skill levels will appreciate the expertly outfitted kitchen, which boasts top-caliber appliances, eye-catching flooring, an island with counter seating, and an organic paint shade that echoes the greenery of the home’s surroundings. Of the four serene bedrooms and luxurious baths, the owner’s suite is a lofty aerie with its own balcony and a large bath that combines vintage and contemporary pieces, including ample storage and a soaking tub.

The property also features a delightful, similarly styled guesthouse—a quiet oasis for visitors—or light-filled studio ideal for artistic pursuits, yoga, or meditation. The desirable location—in the prestigious North of Montana neighborhood—is known for its welcoming environs; thriving community atmosphere; sizable, luxurious homes; and especially spacious estate sites. This rare offering leaves little to be desired, given its enduring design and its proximity to fine restaurants, tony shops, and the enchanting landmarks that have drawn people to Santa Monica for decades.

I Always See Hard-to-Find It Items on Mytheresa—30 I'm Losing It Over

    [ad_1]

Let me fill you in on my worst-kept secret:  Mytheresa is the best place on the internet to shop for designer It items. You have to act fast in many cases, but I’m often amazed at how many new It items it has in stock at any given time. And if you really want to score the very best stuff before it sells out, take my advice and check the new-arrivals section daily. (Yes, there are hundreds of new and restocked items each and every day.) Another way to get the goods is to add items to your Mytheresa wish list. That way, you’ll get an email as soon as something comes back in stock.

I spent all morning scouring the Mytheresa stock (not a bad day at work, I must say) and found a slew of It items that many fashion people would love to get their hands on. I apologize in advance if something sells out before you get to it, but you know what to do—hit that wish-list button.

  • Celebrity Men Wearing Handbags Was the Cultural Reset I Didn't Know I Needed

Celebrity Men Wearing Handbags Was the Cultural Reset I Didn't Know I Needed

    [ad_1]

    Photo:

Daniele Venturelli/Getty Images for Bottega Veneta

Any fashion historian would tell you that the concept of men wearing handbags isn’t groundbreaking, but within the past year, this trend has bubbled up in ways that I haven’t seen in recent memory. My theory is that we’ve seen a rise in the popularity of the “man purse” because it directly reflects how fashion is used to challenge cultural norms. It’s no secret that style has always been used as a way to subvert gender conformity, racism, and sexism, but it feels incredibly fresh at this moment, as we’ve seen a slew of political policies passed around the world that erode the rights that women and members of the LGBTQ+ community have over their bodies within the last few years. From the overturning of Roe v. Wade to the countless pieces of legislation proposed to police drag performers and individuals dressing in a gender-nonconforming manner, there’s no shortage of legislation aimed at degrading ideas of bodily autonomy.

In a way, one could argue that the degradation of rights has given rise to a counterculture that centers on positively reframing ideas and values around traditional femininity. One only needs to reference the box-office numbers for the Barbie film, the virality of the “girlhood” fashion trend, and even men donning handbags as proof of such efforts. While art forms like film and fashion can not be held at the same level as other forms of political protest, they’re still imperative because they are a source of solace in times of uncertainty. After all, what’s more refreshing than seeing famous men embrace something as “feminine” as a handbag? Nothing, in my humble opinion.

While good-ole misogyny has reared its ugly head, seeing men carrying their little bags has acted as a cultural reset. It’s the receipts, proof, timeline, and screenshots I’ve needed to be assured that not all hope is lost. Although it might seem melodramatic, I know I’m not the only one feeling this way. With so much buzz on social media surrounding all the celebs spotted wearing designer bags, plus the continued allure of the quiet luxury movement, it’s safe to say this trend carries significant weight. If you’re still dubious about this trend, you’ll want to keep scrolling to see the examples of men wearing handbags on the runway and in real life that I’ve rounded up.

  • Sophie Turner Just Made Uggs Look Elegant at the Airport—Here's How

Sophie Turner Just Made Uggs Look Elegant at the Airport—Here's How

    [ad_1]

Up until very recently, I pretty much only wore Uggs to walk the dog and go to Pilates classes. But after wearing them for a long car trip earlier this month and finding them to be glorious, I’m adding travel days to my list of places where I wear Uggs. And Sophie Turner’s recent styling of a pair of Uggs for a flight has me even more convinced.

Turner was recently photographed at the airport wearing an Ugg outfit that was downright elegant. As cool as Uggs are, it isn’t that easy to make them look elegant, given how casual they are. The pair the Turner opted for was the brand’s wildly popular platform Tazz Slippers. She paired them with straight-leg jeans and a long black coat. As you’ll see, the coat ensured that she looked completely polished, even though she was wearing shoes with “slippers” in the name.

So, the moral of the story is that if you want to make Uggs look chicer for travel days (or any day), just pair them with a long wool coat. Done and done. Scroll on to shop Ugg slippers and a few coats that would look great with them.

My Vision Board for 2024 Is Filled With '90s Runway Looks—9 I'll Copy First

    [ad_1]

If you took one look at my Pinterest board, you’d think I was living in 1994. Instead of ripping pages out of magazines and putting them in my scrapbook, I’m dragging and dropping images onto my desktop and creating iPhone backgrounds with bubble-letter font telling me to “follow my dreams.” Yeah, I’m that cheesy.

The rise of vision boards has truly crept up on us, and I feel like everyone I know has created a vision board of their own. While mine features images of travel, fitness, and health, I also have some style goals of my own. I want every outfit I wear to look like I just walked down a ’90s runway. Looking in the mirror, I ask myself, Would Gianni Versace approve of this? If you’re with me, the nine looks you should begin with are below.

  • Meet the 3 Chic Portuguese Shoe Brands That Should Be on Your Radar

Meet the 3 Chic Portuguese Shoe Brands That Should Be on Your Radar

    [ad_1]

There are often two types of fashion people in the world: those who are bag people and those who are shoe people. Regardless of what camp you fall into, there are pros and cons for each category: are bags that good of an investment? What do you do if the shoes you buy pinch your feet? Is that truly worth this much money?

Wherever you fall, though, we can agree: in a world of automation, declining luxury quality control, and ultra-cheap, questionable labor practices, artistry reigns supreme when you’re on the hunt for leather goods. So, when I visited Portugal, one of the largest leather goods and shoe manufacturing countries in the world, I knew I had to tap deep into the country’s rich history of generations-long craftsmanship.

Aided by APICCAPS, the country’s leading footwear and leather goods manufacturing organization, I spent nearly a week visiting factories, spending hours at technological centers, and sitting down with leaders and designers in the Portugese footwear space. If you haven’t been paying attention to them yet, now is the time to do so: these three shoe brands need to be on your radar.

  • Why Buyers Are Turning to Homes with Dopamine-Inducing Decor – Sotheby´s International Realty | Blog

Why Buyers Are Turning to Homes with Dopamine-Inducing Decor – Sotheby´s International Realty | Blog

    [ad_1]

Jason Friedman and Ruby Friedman – Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty

Dopamine increases your happiness, alertness, concentration, and motivation. The best part? With the right stimulus, your brain manufactures it for you.

That’s why dopamine decor has become such a popular and powerful aesthetic when furnishing the home. Following the trend of “dopamine dressing” in fashion—where colors and textures can help activate the “feel-good neurotransmitter” in the brain—dopamine decor approaches interior design with a similar intention of galvanizing the mind’s intrinsic reward centers, and generating continuous feedbacks loops of joy, interest, comfort, and pleasure.

Here are four reasons why more people are being drawn towards dopamine decor when looking to buy a home, and four homes that perfectly illustrate the allure of this invigorating style.

    It’s Personal

Kumara Wilcoxon – Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty

Dopamine decor is, at its essence, a maximalist design style that impels you to incorporate more of what makes you happiest. This liberating approach means you can proudly put your funkiest pieces on display without reservation—from the avant-garde side tables you got at that art fair, to the old-fashioned lamp you found at the street market. All that matters is your personal sense of wonder and fulfillment.

But while dopamine decor may thrive on moments of contrast, you should still strive for a sense of cohesion and coordination that unites your unique palette and furniture in a complementary way. Peer into this penthouse to understand how to put a signature stamp on a living space through mismatched fixtures and statement lighting, alongside contemporary art and pops of color.

    It’s Motivating

Jason Friedman and Sandy Binder – Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty

Along with happiness, dopamine is associated with drive, motivation, and incentive—and so dopamine-inducing decor is ideal for fostering a productive space where you always feel creatively charged. This can be accomplished through bright and vivid hues, which are a hallmark of this aesthetic.

While geometric prints and vibrant palettes add vitality to your surroundings, how can you make sure it’s not too much? A good strategy is to choose a patterned accent you adore—such as a rug or a wallpaper—and let it set the tone for matching colors throughout the rest of the room. That’s what makes the kitchen in this country mansion such a fun and fruitful place to work.

    It’s Relaxing

Jason Friedman and Rudi Friedman – Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty

While looks are obviously important in dopamine decor, feelings are also imperative—after all, interior spaces are designed in a way to improve physical and psychological well-being through your body’s natural biochemistry. That’s why this style also places a significant emphasis on textures and cultivating a sensory environment that’s as tangibly satisfying as it is aesthetically appealing.

As demonstrated in the living room of this chateau, an assortment of plush furnishings play well in these spaces, and allows you the freedom to embrace the highly subjective and eclectic side of dopamine-inducing decor. But you don’t necessarily have to opt for soft surfaces, as long as the pieces have the power to elevate your mood and lift your spirits.

    It’s Nostalgic

Kathryn Maxwell-Pournaras and Marta Bruderman – Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty

Few moments spark more joy than a memory of a beautiful place, a wonderful time, or a beloved friend or family member. That’s why dopamine decor leans heavily into the nostalgia factor, featuring photographs of people you hold dear, pieces of art and furniture created or given as gifts, or vintage focal points that transport you back to a grandparent’s cottage or a childhood bedroom.

Quite simply, it’s a license to be as sentimental as you want. Create a vibe that resonates with you and those who know you best, and then bring it to life visually and corporeally. Just look at how the parlor in this estate captures the magic and whimsy of a bygone era, while bringing in sophisticated touches that make it novel, modern, and undeniably one of a kind.

Dopamine decor allows you to be bold, adventurous, and above all else, generous to yourself. It gives you permission to put your needs first when designing the spaces where you live, work, and play. That’s the fundamental charm of this style, and it’s why dopamine decor is a growing priority for homeowners and homebuyers alike.

Looking for more ways to increase dopamine? Frolic amongst the mood-enhancing foliage of a climate-resilient garden.
