  • McLaren’s $2.6M W1 Supercar Wouldn’t Seem Out of Place in Formula 1

    McLaren’s $2.6M W1 Supercar Wouldn’t Seem Out of Place in Formula 1

And the W1 needs one to do its best work. Even in a world in which the new breed of electric hypercar has rewired expectations, this is a phenomenally rapid machine. The W1 can accelerate to 62 mph in 2.7 seconds, 124 mph in 5.8, and 186 mph in “less than 12.7 seconds.” That makes it faster than the highly streamlined Speedtail, and the W1 is also three seconds per lap faster round McLaren’s reference test track—at Italian proving ground Nardo—than the aggressively aerodynamic Senna. Its top speed is an electronically limited 217 mph.

Powertrain options in Race mode include a GP setting for consistency on longer runs, or Sprint for all 1,258 bhp. Bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS rubber is standard fitment, 265/35 at the front, 335/30 at the rear (there are also less extreme R and Winter 2 Pirellis.)

The steering is also fully hydraulic, a key McLaren USP while virtually everyone else adopts a fully electric setup. The brakes use the McLaren Carbon Ceramic-Racing+ setup, with 390-millimeter discs front and rear, and six-piston calipers on the front, and four-piston ones on the rear. There are F1-style ducts and aero wheel appendages to optimize cooling. The W1 can come to a halt from 124 mph in 100 meters.

    InnoKnit Interior

Inside, the fixed seats and raised footwell give the W1 the feel of a well-bred competition car. The pedals, flat-bottomed steering wheel and primary controls adjust to meet the driver. The W1 has the narrowest A-pillars on any McLaren, slender sun visors, and a rear-view camera to atone for the lack of over-the-shoulder visibility.

    Courtesy of McLaren

The wheel now has two buttons—one for a Boost function, the other to tweak the aero—but is still less busy than a Ferrari’s wheel. As on the McLaren Artura and 750 S, the chassis and powertrain modes can be adjusted via rocker switches on the top of the instrument binnacle. The binnacle itself has been shaped aerodynamically.

There’s a central hi-res touchscreen, as on other McLarens, although in the W1 such considerations are surely secondary. There’s a modest amount of stowage space behind the seats. McLaren is also pioneering an interior trim called InnoKnit, an ultra-lightweight sustainable material that can be tailored in multiple colors, and integrates audio and ambient lighting. Its Special Operations division is ready and waiting to personalize the car.

To which end the W1’s £2 million cost ($2.6 million) is merely the starting point. It’s academic anyway, because production is limited to 399 cars, all of which are spoken for. McLaren Automotive has had a turbulent few years, but the W1 is a once-in-a-generation techno marvel.

This special vehicle was featured in the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me. Though it played a car that could transform into a submarine on screen, this impressive feature is just for show in real life.

Despite the fact that Wet Nellie’s gadgets don’t actually function, the car remains an exciting addition to Musk’s collection. The movie clip where Bond asks, “Can you swim?” perfectly captures the vehicle’s charm and why it appealed to Musk. Owning Wet Nellie serves as a unique and memorable piece of Hollywood history for his personal garage.

The Lotus Esprit stands out not just as a piece of cinema memorabilia but also as a car with an intriguing story.

  • Brad Pitt Car Race Movie ‘F1’ Drops its First Teaser Trailer

Brad Pitt Car Race Movie ‘F1’ Drops its First Teaser Trailer

It’s been a year since Brad Pitt was spotted at the British Grand Prix, not as a spectator but as the star of a then-untitled film about Formula One racing. So it’s no coincidence, perhaps, that today marks the release of the movie’s first teaser trailer. F1, as we now know it’s titled, is from Apple Original Films and is made in conjunction with the Formula One organization—so audiences should likely expect thrilling feats of driving and glorious speed over a critical take of the multi-billion-dollar industry.

In the trailer, which features Brad Pitt dismissing questions about safety as related to the construction of a race car, Queen’s “We Will Rock You” provides the soundtrack to some truly impressive footage of F1 cars speeding along various tracks. Pitt’s “aw shucks” grin, still boyish at age 60, also makes its inevitable appearance.

Brad Pitt, star of the upcoming Formula One-based movie, walks in the Pitlane during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone Circuit on July 05, 2024, in Northampton, England.

James Sutton – Formula 1/Getty Images

Speaking with Deadline, director Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) says that the production’s relationship with the Formula One organization meant the film became the 10-team operation’s “eleventh team.”

“We’re shooting at the actual Grand Prix, there are certain aspects of this film where we’re working in very, very tight windows, shooting on the track, between practice and qualifying sessions, in front of hundreds of thousands of people,” Kosinski says.

According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Pitt (who plays a retired racer who returns to the sport) and co-star Damson Idris (in the film, a hot-shot up-and-coming driver) trained for three months behind the wheel of Formula 3 and Formula 2 cars under the tutelage of driver Lewis Hamilton, who made F1 history on Sunday as the first driver to win nine races.

Hamilton, who triumphed at the British Grand Prix Sunday, is also an executive producer on the film. The champ “was really impressed with them, with their driving,” Bruckheimer says of Pitt and Idris.

The movie, which has yet to complete filming, has been rumored to be one of the most expensive films ever made. Hamilton disputed that claim in May, and Bruckheimer also pushed back against ballooning budget rumors with Deadline—but declined to offer up actual costs. “We can’t give you a number because that’s Apple’s money, and they can talk about it,” he said. “But what I think you can say is it’s quite a bit lower than what’s been reported.”

F1 is set for international release on June 25, 2025, and in theaters in North America on June 27. Despite Apple’s backing of the movie, “We’ve always approached it as a theatrical film,” Kosinski tells Deadline. “As for when and where it appears downstream, I think that’s still to be determined, but the only way you’ll be able to see it when it first comes out is in theaters.”

  • Bugatti’s $4 Million Hybrid Hypercar Has the Craziest Steering Wheel We’ve Ever Seen

Bugatti’s $4 Million Hybrid Hypercar Has the Craziest Steering Wheel We’ve Ever Seen

The resurrection of Bugatti is one of the 21st century’s most notable automotive stories. Aristocratic, artistic, and more than a little arcane, Bugatti was a prewar marque that mastered luxury, design, and motorsport, the creator of Grand Prix winners, and arguably the most lavish motorcar ever made, in the shape of the early 1930s Type 41 Royale. Then it faded away.

It was the late Ferdinand Piëch, the monomaniacal kingpin of the Volkswagen Group, who bought the rights to the name and returned the brand to glory with 2005’s Veyron and its successor, the Chiron. The Super Sport version of the latter remains the world’s fastest production car, having achieved a top speed of 304.773 mph in the hands of racing driver Andy Wallace at a German test track in 2019.

How do you follow that—especially in a world in which 2,000-horsepower electric hypercars have comprehensively rearranged expectations?

As fate would have it, Bugatti is now controlled by Croatian EV powerhouse Rimac, as a result of a complex 2021 contra-deal with VW and Porsche. So you’d be right to wonder what kind of encore wunderkind Mate Rimac would devise for the 114-year-old French legend.

The result is the Tourbillon, an imperious super-coupé hybrid that sees Bugatti looking a hundred years ahead as much as it’s invoking its storied past—but not in the ways you’d expect.

The Tourbillon is Bugatti’s latest hybrid hypercar, the first to reveal Rimac’s influence on the manufacturer.

    VIDEO: Bugatti

“Icons like the Type 57SC Atlantic, renowned as the most beautiful car in the world, the Type 35, the most successful racing car ever, and the Type 41 Royale, one of the most ambitious luxury cars of all time, provide our three pillars of inspiration,” Rimac says. “Beauty, performance, and luxury formed the blueprint for the Tourbillon; a car that was more elegant, more emotive, and more luxurious than anything before it. And just like those icons of the past, it wouldn’t be simply for the present, or even for the future, but pour l’éternité–for eternity.”

Yep, it’s safe to say Bugatti is pretty excited about it’s new creation and has an eye on the pristine lawns of the Pebble Beach or Villa d’Este concours events a century hence, positioning its new hypercar as both head-spinningly high-tech and as an artful riposte to built-in obsolescence.

Reskinning Rimac’s own brilliant and fully electric Nevera hypercar was surely one option, but Rimac is respectful enough of Bugatti’s history to know that would never fly. “So I came up with a proposal to make a completely new car,” he says. He’s come an awfully long way since being the sole employee of Rimac back in 2009.

    Instruments of Success

The name Tourbillon will be familiar to adherents of haute horologie. Rather than honor a former Bugatti racing driver—as in Pierre Veyron and Louis Chiron—the new car references the most elaborate mechanism in watchmaking, a machine for the wrist whose complexity counteracts the effects of gravity in order to maintain the most accurate possible timekeeping.

The steering wheel of the new Bugatti Tourbillon spins around the central fixed instrument cluster.

    VIDEO: Bugatti

Bugatti’s designers and engineers were seduced by the idea of mechanical timelessness when they were conceiving the new car, and thus the Tourbillon largely rejects large digital touchscreens in its interior in favor of machined components and a fully analogue skeletonized (another watch world reference) instrument cluster—though a small screen does slide into view if you want it, for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The cluster consists of more than 600 parts, uses titanium, sapphire, and ruby in its construction, and remains fixed in place allowing the steering wheel to rotate around it. Two needles on the center dial display the engine’s revs and speed. On the left are analogue readouts for battery and oil temperature; on the right there’s a display showing the power drawn from the e-motors and engine.

Kim gifting Mercedes cars to pals – and no one knows how he's getting them

KIM Jong-un is said to be giving top end Mercedes cars to members of his inner circle – but no one knows how he is getting them.

The North Korean dictator clearly isn’t short of cash despite ruling over an impoverished nation as he has been splashing out on a slew of fancy cars.

The purchases would make him in breach of UN sanctions.

Kim, 39, has recently been seen riding around in four new foreign vehicles, including an armoured Mercedes Maybach S560 sedan, which would cost at least £179,000, other luxury Mercedes-Benz, Lexus SUVs and Ford vans, according to the Seoul-based NK News.

He has also been seen in a Rolls-Royce Phantom, in the past.

Mystery though surrounds just how Kim managed to get his hands on the vehicles and into North Korea.

The country has been restricted by severe United Nations sanctions in an attempt to curb the escalation of the communist regime’s nuclear weapons and missile programme.

Despite those sanctions, the regime has been able to smuggle in luxury items, including flash watches, designer bags and clothes as well as expensive alcohol, all enjoyed by Kim and his Pyongyang cronies.

Japanese cops last week foiled an attempt to smuggle a $70,000 Lexus into North Korea via Bangladesh, according to the Asahi Shimbun.

Police reportedly raided a car dealer who had allegedly claimed that Singapore was the vehicle’s final destination, breaking the Japanese Customs Act.

Despite huge swathes of the country in poverty and going hungry, Kim likes to show off his wealth and his liking for expensive, flashy items, including yachts, jet skis as well as fancy, high-end cars.

In 2018, he put on a grand show of riding to a historic meeting with the South Korean president in a black Mercedes limousine, flanked by a dozen bodyguards jogging along side.

Last weekend, state TV channel KCTV showed footage of Kim arriving in a new S650 sedan at the National Meeting of Mothers, where he gave a speech stating the importance of having children and bringing them up to love the regime, according to NK News.

Accompanying him was a convoy of Lexus and Toyota SUVs, some of which had been fitted out with new police lights and other emblems.

Despite the US and its allies carrying out surveillance operations to try to prevent sanction breaches, luxury cars and other top-end goods appear regularly in the country.

It’s thought a new route used by Russian cargo ships heading to North Korea’s Rason, on the country’s northeast coast, is thought to be facilitating the latest shipments.

According to a 2019 report by the Washington-based Centre for Advanced Defence Studies, Pyongyang’s ability to smuggle vehicles through China, South Korea and Japan showed how it was also able to supply its nuclear weapons programme.

The centre said last week it had identified 17 vessels registered to Pacific nations that it believed were linked to “illicit” North Korean oil supply chains.

Premium car rental marketplace, Lurento, has announced the launch of its service in the United Arab Emirates. Customers can now rent luxury and sports cars in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

“Dubai is a leading location for luxury travelers and sports car enthusiasts alike. As the largest luxury car rental service, Lurento offers an unparalleled selection of premium cars, luxury cars, sports cars, and supercars. Launched in 2016, Lurento has quickly increased its European operation, and is now based in 80 cities across the continent. The launch into the United Arab Emirates marks the next chapter in the firm’s exciting and ambitious expansion strategy, and is the company’s first venture outside Europe.

“While the premium and luxury car segment is covered by traditional car rental operators, the offering is more fragmented than the broader sector with a significant number of smaller, independent operators. This creates friction in the market, as independent operators often lack visibility to inbound travelers. Potential clients may, on the other hand, be wary of dealing with unfamiliar providers. Lurento bridges this gap through offering a neutral venue for operators and clients to interact, increasing visibility for small providers covering this niche segment while facilitating the process and creating trust for customers to rent their dream cars or specific, premium models,” says Nicolay Nedrelid, Founder & Corporate Advisor at Nedrelid Corporate Advisory, an independent consulting boutique focused on the car rental industry.

As two of the world’s most popular travel destinations, Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer a wide range of activities for the discerning traveler, with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix just one of the many highlights pulling in sports car fans from around the globe.

“With such strong supply and a lot of requests from our clients, we’ve decided to accept partner companies and make their inventory available for customers worldwide. It will also serve as sandbox for a number of features we’ll test to improve our service and provide the perfect rental experience for our customers,” says Mihailo Dhoric, CEO.

The next five years are anticipated to be a period of fast growth in the region too, with the government announcing projects such as The Dubai Marina development to further add to the region’s tourism credentials. While VAT will be introduced in 2018 at a rate of 5 percent, it is not expected to have a significant impact on the car rental sector.
