  • Lufthansa Fires First Shot in Battle for TAP — Europe’s Next Big Airline Prize Is Suddenly in Play

This article first appeared on GuruFocus.

Lufthansa’s (DLAKY) move on TAP lands at an interesting moment for European aviation, and investors are watching the setup with the same intensity they’d apply to a crowded trade. After submitting its expression of interest to the Portuguese government, Deutsche Lufthansa AG framed itself as the partner that could possibly unlock TAP’s long-term potential. The group aims to start with a minority stake as Portugal prepares to sell up to 49.9% of the airline, with 5% earmarked for TAP workers. For Lufthansa, the draw is Lisbon’s positioning in the Atlantic corridor a gateway that could be strengthened further if the partnership materializes.

Management isn’t playing coy about its pitch. Carsten Spohr emphasized the value of TAP’s Portuguese identity while pointing to Lufthansa’s 70-plus years in the market and more than 280 weekly flights already linking Portugal to its broader network. The competitive field isn’t empty: Air France-KLM has already raised its hand, and expectations for bids from Lufthansa and IAG SA had been circulating. Bernstein’s Alex Irving wrote that IAG could be a strong contender, partly because its exposure on EuropeBrazil routes is smaller and partly because it is the only one of the three large groups not currently digesting another airline.

Behind the interest sits a carrier that has quietly rebuilt momentum. TAP carried 16 million passengers in 2024, a 1.6% increase from the prior year, and has been profitable since 2022. Its links to Brazil, its presence in Africa, and its reach into North America have turned it into one of the few remaining state-owned assets of scale in Europe. Lufthansa’s own acquisition of a minority stake in ITA Airways earlier this year adds a layer of context: consolidation may not be accelerating, but this could be one of the next meaningful moves in a region already dominated by three major airline groups.

  • Pilots union gives Lufthansa time to resolve pensions dispute, averting possible strike

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Germany’s pilots union VC is giving Lufthansa more time to resolve a pensions dispute, averting a possible strike at the airline for now, according to a union letter to its members obtained by Reuters on Saturday.

The employer will again be requested, with a set deadline, to submit an offer in the talks that have been ongoing since May, the letter dated Friday stated.

“We will grant management sufficient time for this, so that for the time being no industrial action is to be expected,” it said, without specifying how much time it would give management.

VC members had voted in favor of strike action in a ballot at the end of September, which Lufthansa averted with new rounds of talks that failed, however, to produce results.

The union is demanding higher employer contributions to company pension plans for the 4,800 cockpit employees of the core airline brand Lufthansa and the cargo subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo.

  • Camila Alves McConaughey Shares Video From Aboard Harrowing Lufthansa Flight

Camila Alves McConaughey Shares Video From Aboard Harrowing Lufthansa Flight

Lufthansa Flight 469 from Austin, Texas, to Frankfurt, Germany, was diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport after intense turbulence injured multiple passengers. The Federal Aviation Administration said seven passengers were hospitalized as a result.

On Thursday, Camila Alves McConaughey shared a video of food and other items scattered across the aisle of a plane, saying she was on the plane that “dropped almost 4000 feet.”

“Everything was flying everywhere,” she said. “To respect the privacy of those around me that’s all I am showing but the plane was a CHAOS And the turbulence keep on coming.”

She noted that it was the Lufthansa flight “you are seeing on the news today!!!! Yes… that one.”

According to The Washington Post, Matthew McConaughey was also among the 172 passengers and 12 crew members on the Airbus A330, which touched down in Dulles about 9:10 p.m.

The turbulence hit while the plane was at an altitude of 37,000 feet over Tennessee, the FAA told CNN.

In a statement, Lufthansa said the flight encountered severe turbulence about 90 minutes after takeoff and made an unscheduled landing as a precautionary measure.

One passenger, Samantha Pinto, told the Post she saw a baby flying out of a bassinet and the child’s mother grabbing the baby from the air, as well as passengers praying and crying and bracing themselves.

“I seriously thought we were going to die,” she told the Post.

Lufthansa flight diverts to Virginia after ‘significant turbulence,’ and 7 people are transported to hospitals | CNN

    CNN
     —

A Lufthansa flight traveling from Texas to Germany was diverted to Virginia’s Washington Dulles International Airport on Wednesday evening because of turbulence that left some passengers injured, an airport spokesperson said.

Lufthansa Flight 469, which took off from Austin, experienced “significant turbulence” and landed safely at Dulles, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokesperson Michael Cabbage said.

Seven people were transported to hospitals, Cabbage said.

Brief but severe turbulence happened about 90 minutes after takeoff and resulted in minor injuries to some passengers, a statement given to CNN by a Lufthansa spokesperson reads.

“This was so-called clear air turbulence, which can occur without visible weather phenomena or advance warning,” the statement reads.

“The affected passengers were given initial care on board by the flight attendants trained for such cases. As the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members is the top priority at all times, the cockpit crew decided to make an alternate landing to (Dulles airport) after flying through the turbulence.”

The crew of the Airbus A330 reported reported encountering the turbulence at an altitude of 37,000 feet over Tennessee, the Federal Aviation Administration told CNN.

The flight landed at Dulles airport around 9:10 p.m., FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor said.

The FAA will investigate the incident, Gregor said.

  • New Avionics Innovation Helps Airlines Reduce 800 Tonnes of Co2 Emissions as WeSky Delivers the World’s Lightest In-Seat Power Solution

New Avionics Innovation Helps Airlines Reduce 800 Tonnes of Co2 Emissions as WeSky Delivers the World’s Lightest In-Seat Power Solution

Commercial Airlines Carbon Footprint is Reduced by over 800 Tonnes Annually for a typical fleet of Single Aisle Boeing or Airbus Aircraft with recharge™️, an Avionics In-Seat Power System

    Press Release

    Dec 12, 2022

While world and business leaders recently converged at COP27 in Egypt making promises to fulfill climate commitments to their 2050 accord, EU based avionics company WeSky launched an innovation that will help the commercial airline industry fulfill theirs; its first of a kind in-seat power system which is the lightest in the world and helps to reduce fuel consumption and aircraft weight thus lowering carbon emissions for a typical single aisle commercial aircraft.

The WeSky 60W USB Power Supply solution, recharge™️, is typically 70% lighter than existing equipment on the market. Other differentiations include increased flexibility and a faster delivery lead-time in light of current supply chain issues facing incumbent competitors.

Based on research and typical aircraft performance “this new recharge™️ solution will reduce an Airbus 321 carbon footprint by 16 tonnes/year, compared to other products offered by industry leaders. This means a commercial carrier with a fleet of 50 can save 250 tonnes of fuel consumption per year while also reducing carbon emission by 800 tonnes,” said Vytis Petrusevicius, CEO and Founder of WeSky.

With effective climate friendly solutions available, the aviation industry has an opportunity to put words into action and not only focus on a shift to using alternative and renewable fuels but also  benefit from the implementation of new equipment which promotes efficiency and helps the environment while also benefiting the consumer.

“The impact of recharge™️ is extremely significant when you think about how the Aviation Industry can speed up adaptation with such innovation. WeSky hopes to lead in bringing new avionics products to the market that have climate and sustainability at its core. With USB-C common charger regulations taking effect for portable electronics, the airlines will have a reliable solution that reduces the passenger need of traveling with extra battery packs and adaptors which is a further benefit for aircraft efficiency and safety,” said Leslie C. Bethel, WeSky Co-founder and Board Member.
