  • Some air traffic controllers left out of shutdown bonuses

    [ad_1]

Only 776 air traffic controllers and technicians who had perfect attendance during the government shutdown will receive $10,000 bonuses while nearly 20,000 other workers will be left out, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Thursday.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Federal Aviation Administration says only 776 of the nearly 20,000 air traffic controllers and technicians who had to work without pay during the shutdown will receive bonuses
    • The announcement Thursday means thousands without perfect attendance during the shutdown won’t receive the $10,000 bonuses that President Donald Trump suggested.
    • Many controllers called out of work as they dealt with the financial pressure of not getting a paycheck
    • Some got side jobs, but others simply couldn’t afford the child care or gas they needed to work
    • Their absences forced delays at airports across the country and led to the government to cut some of their flights at 40 busy airports

A number of controllers started calling out of work as the shutdown dragged on longer than a month and they dealt with the financial pressure of working without a paycheck. Some of them got side jobs, but others simply couldn’t afford the child care or gas they needed to work. Their absences forced delays at airports across the country and led the government to order airlines to cut some of their flights at 40 busy airports.

President Donald Trump suggested the bonuses for those who have stayed on the job in a social media post, but he also suggested that controllers who missed work should have their pay docked. FAA officials haven’t publicly announced plans to penalize controllers.

Thousands of FAA technicians also had to work during the shutdown to maintain the equipment that air traffic controllers rely on. At least 6,600 technicians were expected to work throughout the shutdown but more than 3,000 others were subject to be recalled to work.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the bonuses acknowledged the dedication of these few workers who never missed a shift during the 43-day shutdown. In a post on X he described it as “Santa’s coming to town a little early.”

“These patriotic men and women never missed a beat and kept the flying public safe throughout the shutdown,” Duffy said in his formal announcement.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association union said only 311 of its more than 10,000 members will receive the bonuses. The union said these workers with perfect attendance deserve recognition but so do the others.

“We are concerned that thousands of air traffic controllers who consistently reported for duty during the shutdown, ensuring the safe transport of passengers and cargo across the nation, while working without pay and uncertain of when they would receive compensation, were excluded from this recognition. More than 311 of these dedicated professionals were instrumental in keeping America moving,” the union said in a statement.

The Professional Aviation Safety Specialists union said the thousands of technicians it represents worked hard to keep the aging computer and radar systems controllers use operating during the shutdown, and they should all be recognized — not just the 423 getting bonuses.

“It took many hands to ensure that not one delay during the historic 43-day shutdown was attributed to equipment or system failures,” the union said in a statement.

Democratic Rep. Rick Larsen questioned why all the controllers and others who worked to keep flights moving during during the shutdown won’t get bonuses.

“For the Trump administration to not give a bonus to every single one of these hardworking women and men is wrong; they all deserve a bonus and back pay,” said Larsen, who is the ranking member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure committee.

The controllers union said they hope to work with Duffy to find a way to recognize all the other air traffic controllers who worked during the shutdown.

Last week, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that any TSA officers who went “above and beyond” while working without pay would get $10,000 bonuses, but she never specified how many will qualify beyond the handful of checks she handed out to officers at a news conference.

The FAA was already critically short on air traffic controllers before the shutdown. Duffy had been working to boost controller hiring and streamline the years of training required in the hope of eliminating the shortage over the next several years.

Duffy has said that some students and controllers quit and more experienced controllers retired during the shutdown. Many controllers already work 10-hour shifts six days a week because the FAA is so short on staffing.

As more controllers missed work, the FAA ordered airlines to cut flights to relieve pressure on the system. Duffy said repeatedly that FAA safety experts became worried as the absences grew because of reports from pilots concerned about controllers’ responses and a number of runway incursions.

Since the shutdown ended, controller staffing has improved significantly and airlines were allowed to resume normal operations this week..

  • Chadwick Boseman honored with posthumous star on Hollywood Walk of Fame: ‘He was an incredible leader’

    [ad_1]

(CNN) — Friends, family and fans gathered Thursday to honor the late Chadwick Boseman receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.

Thursday was declared “Chadwick Boseman Day” in Hollywood, and his “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” costar Viola Davis, his “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler and Boseman’s widow Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman spoke during the emotional ceremony.

“I have to believe that Chadwick is still alive,” Davis said. “I can’t use the word ‘gone’ or ‘death’ really when thinking about him.”

The “Black Panther” actor died in 2020 at the age of 43 after a private battle with colon cancer.

Davis noted that they worked on their Oscar-winning movie “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” just before he passed, and said Boseman “was always trying to engage me on the set” talking about the “cap of success” and having the types of conversations that she believes people have when they know they “possibly are transitioning.”

The late actor, she said in her tribute, was a “mighty mighty elixir that sort of stirred up the alchemy that we’re all in search of, which is meaning.”

“I celebrate him today. And I say to him, I hope all the angels in heaven just sang him to a beautiful rest,” Davis said. “And I thank him for what he left behind in me, which is a burning ember that always guides me to a higher meaning of my work and my purpose.”

“This star, as beautiful as it is on the Walk of Fame, shines a whole lot less brighter than Chadwick is in heaven,” she concluded her speech.

Coogler, Boseman’s friend who directed him in the “Black Panther” Marvel film, asked for attendees’ understanding as he emotionally talked about the late star.

“When I think of Chadwick Boseman I think of three things: leadership, teaching and generosity,” Coogler said. “He was an incredible leader.”

The famed “Sinners” director said Boseman was “ageless,” and joked he didn’t know his age until he went to one of his birthday parties. He also told a story about Boseman sneaking past stars like Sylvestor Stallone, Michael B. Jordan (who was present at Thursday’s ceremony) and others to get into Coogler’s hotel room during a big press tour for the 2015 film “Creed.”

Boseman, Coogler said, wanted to meet with him to talk about working together on “Black Panther” and managed to evade even the press that were were present.

“I was so impressed by that and I asked him how he got past everybody and he smiled and said, ‘That was the Panther,’” Coogler said, chuckling.

Boseman’s wife was the last to take the podium, and had a heartfelt message for her late husband.

“Chad, today we recognize a lifetime of artistry. We recognize your skill and your devotion and we cement your legacy as a hero and icon,” she said. “You lived with honor and you walked in truth. You were as brilliant as you were beautiful and as courageous as you were kind. We love you, we miss you and we thank you.”

She then invited her husband’s brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, to help with the unveiling of the star.

In addition to portraying T’Challa in “Black Panther” and other Marvel movies as well as his Academy Award-nominated turn in Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Boseman had a robust film and television career, and portrayed Thurgood Marshall, James Brown and Jackie Robinson on film before his untimely passing.

  • Sex trafficking arrest spotlights ‘pimp circuit’ connecting L.A., National City and Las Vegas

    [ad_1]

A Las Vegas man, Vincent Bailey, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for sex trafficking a 16-year-old, including for a time on a notorious National City strip that has been a magnet for prostitution for years, but which local law enforcement has failed to shut down

Bailey’s sentencing followed a guilty plea to one count of sex trafficking. The 25-year-old was sentenced in late June, but the U.S. Attorney’s San Diego office didn’t release details of the case until Monday because of the government shutdown.

Bailey’s criminal activity in this case spanned less than a month in the summer of 2024, but prosecutors allege in a court filing that Bailey made enough in that time to buy a silver Tesla Model 3.

Bailey connected with the girl, identified only as ‘J F’ in the court filing, on Instagram and eventually drove her around Las Vegas pointing out prostitutes and asking if she would like to make money selling herself for him.

She declined, but spent the night with him, according to Bailey’s plea deal. The next day he took her to Los Angeles to pimp her out; he later took her to the South Bay.

In National City, J F called her mother for help. She had no money, a common strategy by pimps to maintain control over their prostitutes. The teen’s mother paid for a rideshare to a cafe, where she called National City police and asked them to meet her. When Bailey learned of this, according to court documents, he threatened to “smack the ‘F’ out of” her if he had to come get her.

She ignored his threat and returned to Las Vegas with a relative. But the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force by then had begun to investigate her case.

Ten days later, J F’s mother again reported her missing. Prosecutors traced online sex advertisements in Las Vegas at that time to Bailey, because he used the same language as in previous ads in Los Angeles and San Diego.

A freeway onramp with trees and greenery on the right and a series of motel signs can be seen on the street directly right of the lanes. In some circles this is known as part of the "pimp circuit" that connects Las Vegas and Southern California.
Interstate 5 connects National City to the so-called “pimp circuit.” A number of low-budget motels along Roosevelt Avenue east of I-5 offer easy access to the freeway. (Photo courtesy of Google Street View)

Finally, law enforcement arrested Bailey on Oct. 1, 2024 following a routine traffic stop by the California Highway Patrol. Investigators discovered the girl had been branded with a tattoo under her left eye, matching a tattoo Bailey had.

In National City, Bailey relied on a motel on the same stretch of Roosevelt Avenue described in a 2021 Times of San Diego story on extensive sex trafficking in the area.

The plea deal describes Bailey arriving in National City around 1 a.m., checking into a motel, and providing the teen a fake ID. He then told her to  “go out on the ‘blade’ on Roosevelt Avenue for several hours.” “Blade” is how pimps refer to an area with a booming sex trade.

The earlier story described how this same area, Roosevelt along Interstate 5, was a magnet for sex trafficking, with several motels in the immediate area. National City Police Chief Jose Tellez, told Times of San Diego then that the street was a long-running problem the department had wrestled with for years.

“The area is frequented by pimps and traffickers” who have easy on-and-off access to the interstate, Tellez said. Former Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis said at the time her office was “making efforts to improve” the situation, including more and brighter street lighting and removing foliage along the street that provided cover for sex acts.

After Bailey’s sentencing, Mayor Ron Morrison said he believes his office and the police department have made things tougher for the sex trade. The problem, he said, has “fallen off, like a rock going over a cliff” and is  “nowhere what it was.”

In addition, there is now  a police tower in the area to observe behavior on the street.

“The truth is we can’t get all of them,” Morrison said, but he argued targeted efforts like “driving off the johns” are a strong deterrent in reducing the activity.

National City’s police department did not respond to a request for comment.

Before Bailey set up shop in National City, he had the young woman working what’s considered the “blade” in Los Angeles, a two-mile section of Figueroa Street in South Central LA.

The U.S. Attorney’s filing described ‘J F’ being sold in Los Angeles in two ways — “working street-based sex acts and through commercial sex advertisements” placed by Bailey. She told investigators she had “five commercial sex acts per day” and all of her earnings went to the defendant.

Stephany Powell — the executive director of a victim-serving nonprofit called Journey Out, and a former LAPD sergeant in charge of the city’s vice unit — said her LA cases regularly included victims from Bakersfield, Fresno, Las Vegas and San Diego.

Powell said a pimp like Bailey might leave Figueroa even when it’s still profitable if there is too much police activity.

“They’ll say ‘that the area’s hot,’ meaning that law enforcement’s paying a lot of attention to it,” she said. “So they’ll just move to another area until that gets hot, and they’ll move to another.”

The one thing the cities on the pimp circuit have in common, she said, “is the ability to make money there.”

  • This queer, Latine-led organization is protecting residents against SNAP cuts and immigration raids

    [ad_1]

You may not be too familiar with LA County Assessor Jeffrey Prang. You’ve probably never heard of the office of the LA County Assessor, or you might only have a vague notion of what it does.

But with a career in city politics spanning nearly thirty years, he’s among the longest-serving openly gay elected officials in the United States, and for his work serving the people of Los Angeles and championing the rights of the city’s LGBTQ people, the Stonewall Democratic Club is honoring him at their 50th Anniversary Celebration and Awards Night Nov 15 at Beaches Tropicana in West Hollywood.

Prang moved to Los Angeles from his native Michigan after college in 1991, specifically seeking an opportunity to serve in politics as an openly gay man. In 1997, he was elected to the West Hollywood City Council, where he served for 18 years, including four stints as mayor.

“I was active in politics, but in Michigan at the time I left, you couldn’t really be out and involved in politics… My life was so compartmentalized. I had my straight friends, my gay friends, my political friends, and I couldn’t really mix and match those things,” he says.

“One of the things that was really impactful was as you drove down Santa Monica Boulevard and saw those rainbow flags placed there by the government in the median island. That really said, this is a place where you can be yourself. You don’t have to be afraid.”

One thing that’s changed over Prang’s time in office is West Hollywood’s uniqueness as a place of safety for the queer community.

“It used to be, you could only be out and gay and politically involved if you were from Silver Lake or from West Hollywood. The thought of being able to do that in Downey or Monterey Park or Pomona was foreign. But now we have LGBTQ centers, gay pride celebrations, and LGBT elected officials in all those jurisdictions, something that we wouldn’t have thought possible 40 years ago,” he says.

Prang’s jump to county politics is emblematic of that shift. In 2014, amid a scandal that brought down the previous county assessor, Prang threw his name in contention for the job, having worked in the assessor’s office already for the previous two years. He beat out eleven contenders in the election, won reelection in 2018 and 2022, and is seeking a fourth term next year.

To put those victories in perspective, at the time of his first election, Prang represented more people than any other openly gay elected official in the world.

Beyond his office, Prang has lent his experience with ballot box success to helping get more LGBT people elected through his work with the Stonewall Democrats and with a new organization he co-founded last year called the LA County LGBTQ Elected Officials Association (LACLEO).

LACLEO counts more than fifty members, including officials from all parts of the county, municipal and state legislators, and members of school boards, water boards, and city clerks.

“I assembled this group to collectively use our elected strength and influence to help impact policy in Sacramento and in Washington, DC, to take advantage of these elected leaders who have a bigger voice in government than the average person, and to train them and educate them to be better advocates on behalf of the issues that are important for us,” Prang says.

“I do believe as a senior high-level official I need to play a role and have an important voice in supporting our community,” he says.

Ok, but what is the LA County assessor, anyway?

“Nobody knows what the assessor is. 99% of people think I’m the guy who collects taxes,” Prang says.

The assessor makes sure that all properties in the county are properly recorded and fairly assessed so that taxes can be levied correctly. It’s a wonky job, but one that has a big impact on how the city raises money for programs.

And that wonkiness suits Prang just fine. While the job may seem unglamorous, he gleefully boasts about his work overhauling the office’s technology to improve customer service and efficiency, which he says is proving to be a role model for other county offices.

“I inherited this 1970s-era mainframe green screen DOS-based legacy system. And believe it or not, that’s the standard technology for most large government agencies. That’s why the DMV sucks. That’s why the tax collection system sucks. But I spent $130 million over almost 10 years to rebuild our system to a digitized cloud-based system,” Prang says.

“I think the fact that my program was so successful did give some impetus to the board funding the tax collector and the auditor-controller to update their system, which is 40 years behind where they need to be.”

More tangible impacts for everyday Angelenos include his outreach to promote tax savings programs for homeowners, seniors, and nonprofits, and a new college training program that gives students a pipeline to good jobs in the county.

As attacks on the queer community intensify from the federal government, Prang says the Stonewall Democrats are an important locus of organization and resistance, and he encourages anyone to get involved.

“It is still an important and relevant organization that provides opportunities for LGBTQ people to get involved, to have an impact on our government and our civic life. If you just wanna come and volunteer and donate your time, it provides that, if you really want to do more and have a bigger voice and move into areas of leadership, it provides an opportunity for that as well,” he says.

  • Housing advocate Rae Huang announces candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES — Community organizer and minister Rae Huang formally announced her candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles on Sunday, offering voters an option to the left of Mayor Karen Bass and potentially complicating prospects for Bass avoiding a runoff.

“This campaign is not about me,” the 43-year-old Huang said Sunday afternoon at Arts District Brewing Co. in downtown Los Angeles. “It is about us, all of us, all Angelenos, it is about the future that we will and must build together this new season for our city.

“In this new season, we are going to make housing affordable for all. We are going to make transit free, safe and fast. We are going to make sure that wages and work are dignified.”

Huang is deputy director of Housing Now California, a coalition of over 150 organizations that fights tenant displacement. She is also a member of the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, and if elected would be Los Angeles’ first Asian-American mayor.

Huang is a long shot to win with little name recognition or political experience, but if her campaign gains traction she could siphon enough votes from Bass to keep the mayor from a majority in the June 2 primary. If no candidate receives over 50%, the top two finishers will meet in a runoff in November.

Bass has drawn criticism for her handling of the devastating Palisades fire in January. When the fire broke out Bass was in Ghana as part of the four-member presidential delegation attending the inauguration of John Dramani Mahama as president.

Bass has also drawn criticism for not doing enough to address high housing costs.

Doug Herman, a spokesperson for the Bass campaign, told City News Service in an email that “Under Mayor Bass’ leadership, there has been unprecedented progress on the issues that matter most to Angelenos.”

“Homelessness has declined for the first time in two consecutive years, neighborhoods are safer with significant drops in crime, and the Palisades fire recovery continues far ahead of pace with the fastest recovery and rebuilding in California history,” Herman said.

“In addition, there was no better defender of Los Angeles than Mayor Karen Bass when Trump’s ICE raids started and we won a court ruling to help stop the illegal raids and unconstitutional arrests. That’s what we need to move Los Angeles forward.”

Former LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner declared his candidacy on Oct. 13.

“Rev. Huang and I share many concerns about the direction of Los Angeles, including our city’s lack of affordable housing. I look forward to getting to know her during the campaign ahead,” Beutner told City News Service on Sunday.

The 72-year-old Bass, a former congresswoman and Assembly speaker and a onetime community organizer herself, defeated businessman Rick Caruso in 2022 to become mayor.

Caruso has not announced whether he will run for mayor again in 2026.

  • Agoura football survives OT struggle to oust Orange Vista

    [ad_1]

PERRIS — Despite nine total interceptions it was still a one-point game in the end.

Agoura senior quarterback Gavin Gray was intercepted six times, but junior slotback George Hastings stepped up to finish the job as Agoura defeated Orange Vista 27-26 in overtime on Friday night in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 quarterfinals.

“I was just the right guy at the right time,” Hastings said. “I always knew we were going to rally and win this game.”

Hastings, who had six catches and three touchdowns last week in a first-round win over Summit, led the Chargers (10-2 overall) with 16 carries for 60 rushing yards and scored the game-tying touchdown in overtime before senior Luke Bussiere kicked the point-after attempt to win the game.

“We got down in the game in the second half and I think this team just wants it more,” Hastings said. “You could see everyone coming together to will us to this win.”

Senior quarterback Khalil Abdul-Aziz was just 9 for 22 with three interceptions and also fumbled twice in his final high school appearance as Orange Vista (9-3) lost for the first time since Week 1.

“We started the game off with fumble after fumble,” Orange Vista coach Shawn Fleming said. “Wet weather definitely affected our quarterback. It took a little bit away from our best player.”

Junior safety Devin Sandville returned two interceptions for touchdowns as Orange Vista battled back from a 17-6 deficit to take a 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter.

“We knew it was going to come down to the wire,” Fleming said. “Our defense played a great game to keep us in it.”

The Coyotes held that advantage until Bussiere kicked a 30-yard field goal to tie the game with less than 5 minutes remaining, and Bussiere even had a chance to win the game with a 37-yard field goal, but it was blocked as time expired in the fourth quarter.

“I feel more fortunate than I’ve ever felt,” Agoura coach Dustin Croik said. “I haven’t been a part of a game that has come down like that, and at the end we just dug it out and did what we needed to do.”

Orange Vista lost the coin flip to start overtime and took possession of the ball. Sophomore running back Bobby Greer (27 carries for 151 yards) got into the end zone in five plays for a 26-20 lead, but the PAT was blocked.

Hastings, who replaced Gray under center late in the fourth quarter, went around the left side for 20 yards in overtime to set up a game-tying 3-yard scoring plunge over the goal line.

“Everybody believes in (Hastings),” Croik said. “They call him ‘Captain America’, and for good reason. He’s the man. He rises to the occasion.”

Bussiere knocked through the ensuing PAT through the uprights to end the 3-hour, 47-minute game.

  • Border Patrol chief behind Chicago crackdown prepares new operation in Charlotte

    [ad_1]

After a months-long deportation campaign in Chicago, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents are reportedly getting ready to leave the Windy City and depart for Charlotte, North Carolina, and later New Orleans.

On Monday, CBS News reported that some of the more than 200 “Border Patrol teams dispatched to Chicago could be diverted to Charlotte, North Carolina for an operation that is expected to start there this month.” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), meanwhile, will continue its work in Chicago. The Charlotte contingent will be led by sector chief Gregory Bovino, who oversaw deployments in Chicago and Los Angeles earlier this year.

Neither CBP nor the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have publicly confirmed the reported redeployment, and local officials in Charlotte say they were caught off guard by the news. Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Chief Johnny Jennings told WBTV, a local CBS affiliate, “I don’t know if that’s going to happen or not. They haven’t reached out to me, so I’m not sure what’s going to occur.” In a statement, the department added that it “does not participate in ICE operations, nor are we involved in the planning of these federal activities.” The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office likewise told WBTV it “had not been contacted by any border patrol representatives, nor has it been involved in any planning or conversations.”

It’s unclear what the motive for this potential deployment will be. While CBP has often been deployed in cities that President Donald Trump deems “lawless,” crime in Charlotte is dropping. The CMPD  reported that from January through September, the city saw an 8 percent decrease in overall crime and a 20 percent drop in violent‐crime incidents, according to its third-quarter crime statistics

The legal basis for such deployments also remains murky. CBP’s statutory authority extends within 100 miles of the border, but the agency has long expanded that zone to include major inland cities. Within this area, CBP argues it has broader latitude to conduct stops and limited searches under the “border search” framework—though courts have repeatedly held that many warrantless searches away from the actual border would otherwise be unconstitutional.

But, as the American Civil Liberties Union notes, the Constitution’s protections against “unreasonable searches and seizures” apply throughout the United States, including within the so-called 100-mile border zone. A Congressional Research Service report likewise explains that while the “border search exception” grants CBP broader authority near the border, searches and seizures conducted farther inland are “subject to greater Fourth Amendment scrutiny.”

Questions about the legality of CBP enforcement in Charlotte are sure to be prevalent with Bovino at the helm. While overseeing operations in Chicago, Bonvino has drawn scrutiny for allowing his agent to implement legally dubious riot control tactics, including pepper-spraying a family during a grocery run, tear-gassing peaceful protestors, and pointing guns at veterans. As Reason’s Autumn Billings recently reported, those incidents culminated in a sweeping injunction issued by a federal judge last week, finding that federal agents violated Fourth Amendment protections and used excessive force in multiple encounters.

Whether the Charlotte operation proceeds as reported remains to be seen. But the pattern is clear: if what happened in Chicago is any indication, deployments like this carry a real risk of civil rights violations. And it won’t stop in Charlotte. The administration is already weighing similar operations elsewhere, with New Orleans reportedly next in line, suggesting that these tactics could soon spread across the country. Now, the question is no longer where the border is, but how far these abuses will reach before someone stops them.

  • Waymo’s Robotaxis Can Now Use the Highway, Speeding Up Longer Trips

    [ad_1]

When Google’s self-driving car project began testing in the Bay Area back in 2009, its engineers focused on highways by sending its sensor-laden vehicles cruising down Interstate 280, which runs the length of Silicon Valley’s peninsula.

More than 15 years later, the cars are back on the freeway—this time without drivers. On Tuesday, the project, now an Alphabet subsidiary we all know as Waymo, announced that its robotaxi service would now drive on freeways in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

The new service marks another technical leap for Waymo, whose robotaxis currently serve five US metros: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company says it will launch in several other US and international cities next year, including Dallas, Miami, Nashville, Las Vegas, Detroit, and London.

Waymo also announced Wednesday that it would begin curbside pickup and drop-off service at San Jose Mineta International Airport, allowing passengers to, theoretically, travel autonomously all the way from San Francisco to San Jose—a service area of some 260 square miles. Waymo has been offering its autonomous taxi service on area service roads since the summer of 2023, but the new freeway service could cut in half the time it takes for a robotaxi to travel from San Francisco to Mountain View, Waymo user experience researcher Naomi Guthrie says.

“Freeway driving is one of those things that’s very easy to learn, but very hard to master,” Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov told reporters last week. Highways are predictable, with (mostly) clear signs and lane lines, and a limited set of vehicles and players (trucks, cars, motorcycles, trailers) that a vehicle’s software must learn to recognize and predict. But Waymo executives said that, despite a year of employee- and guest-only highway testing, safety emergencies on highways are relatively rare, so the team was unable to collect as much real-world data as it needed to train its vehicles to operate safely there. Complicating the project was the fact that highway crashes, at high speeds, are subject to the laws of phsyics—and so more likely to maim or kill.

To get ready for highways, Waymo executives say, engineers supplemented real-world driving data and training with data collected on private, closed courses, and data created in simulations. Two onboard computers help create system “redundancies,” meaning the vehicles will have computer backup if something goes wrong. The vehicles have been trained to exit highways in the case of emergencies, but will be able to pull over as well. Waymo execs also say they have and will work with law enforcement and first responders, including highway patrols, to create procedures for vehicles and riders stranded on highway shoulders, where hundreds of Americans are killed every year.

  • Prince Harry Apologizes to Canada For World Series “Hatgate”: “I Was Under Duress”

    [ad_1]

Prince Harry, accompanied by Meghan Markle, came for a baseball game and left with a new controversy. On October 28, the Sussexes attended the fourth game of the World Series, between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. The couple sat in the front row behind the dugout, all smiles, with Los Angeles team caps on their heads, cheering for their adopted hometown team.

But Prince Harry made the mistake of wearing a Dodgers cap. As soon as he was spotted wearing the bright blue accessory, some Canadians accused him of betraying his heritage: Canada is a Commonwealth country whose head of state is King Charles III. Arriving in Canada on Wednesday for a two-day visit to commemorate Remembrance Day, celebrated on November 11, Prince Harry was naturally asked about what has jokingly been deemed “hatgate.”

“Is there anything you’d like to say about wearing that Los Angeles Dodgers cap last week and getting in hot water?” he was asked by CTV News on Thursday.

“Oh, the Los Angeles Dodgers cap. Well, firstly, I’d like to apologize to Canada for wearing it,” he explained. “Secondly, I was under duress, there wasn’t much choice,” he added with a smile. Invited to the game by the Dodgers’ owner, he thought it was “polite” to do so. Prince Harry confided that there was an additional reason for his choice of headgear. “When you’re missing a lot of hair on top and you’re sitting under floodlights, you’ll take any hat that’s available,” he joked.

  • LA Assessor Jeffrey Prang to be honored by Stonewall Democrats

  • L.A.’s Architectural Treasures Shine in New Book – LAmag

    [ad_1]

In his new book “Architreasures,” photographer Geoffrey Goddard spotlights architectural gems in Los Angeles and around the globe

Sometimes you have to see your hometown through the eyes of a visitor to really appreciate it. Australian photographer Geoffrey Goddard put Beverly Hills’ landmark 1965 Union 76 station on the cover of his new book Architreasures: A Journey Through 20th-Century Architecture, recently released from Schiffer Publishing.

    Credit: Courtesy Schiffer Publishing

His portfolio elevates our everyday background into high art and heightens our appreciation of L.A.’s artful tire shops, movie houses and bowling alleys to a proper perch, alongside the world’s great architecture.

“The play on words encapsulates both the intrinsic value of preserving architecture and the process of finding and photographing buildings,” Goddard says. “Which takes on the thrill of a treasure hunt.”

His startling image of the famously dynamic service station is joined by glamorous portraits of design icons from around the world, including Corbusier’s Villa Savoye in France and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Goddard’s eye on L.A. mainly focuses on modernism in the years just before and after the Second World War and the challenges in preserving it. Thankfully, Art Deco returned to fashion in the 1970s and ’80s, and midcentury modern style has been on an uptick for the last few decades.

His images of Deco towers like Bullocks Wilshire and Downtown’s Eastern Columbia building glowing in the bright L.A. sun capture a sense of optimism and enthusiasm. Goddard captured Googie landmarks like Pann’s Restaurant and the Downey McDonald’s at dusk just as the neon signs were coming to life and turning them into sculptures of pure energy.

“Buildings carry immense cultural and emotional significance as symbols of our aspirations for the future,” Goddard says, “while, in turn, standing as totems of our past.”

    [ad_1]

Sydney Sweeney and her ex-fiancé just had a very tense reunion…

It’s been months since the Euphoria star and her ex Jonathan Davino called off their engagement, but tensions are clearly still running hot… On Sunday, TMZ reported the Anyone But You actress hit up eatery Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica with friends on Saturday night to catch Game 7 of the 2025 World Series… But the night took a sharp turn when she left the establishment and met up with her ex.

According to the outlet, Syd hopped into an Uber SUV after leaving the hotspot and had the driver chauffeur her just a few blocks away where her ex-fiancé was reportedly parked. There, she exited the Uber and snuck into Jonathan’s rig and the two drove off together.

“I don’t believe you. Please leave, leave me alone.”

    Yikes!

It’s not clear what the pair were seemingly arguing about, but in paparazzi photos obtained by TMZ, the Madame Web star can be seen ducking and attempting to shield her face while sneaking into Jonathan’s car. See HERE.

This isn’t the first time Sydney and Jonathan have been spotted together post-split, but it’s definitely the most tense reunion of theirs we’ve heard of… Back in August, the Christy star told the Wall Street Journal in an interview that she aimed to continue working with her ex through their Fifty-Fifty Films production company despite their split:

“I’m going to keep all of my personal stuff out of it.”

This all comes amid reports that Sydney is moving on from the producer with Justin Bieber’s former manager Scooter Braun.

The team will coast through downtown Los Angeles Monday on double-decker buses in a parade that’s scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Immediately after, a special ticketed event will be held at Dodger Stadium.

With road closures set to block access to the parade route and parking expected to be packed in Chavez Ravine, local leaders and transportation officials are urging fans to take public transit to either festivity.

The parade’s route will begin at Temple Street and Broadway, then head west on Temple, south on Grand Avenue, west on 7th Street, and north on Figueroa Street before ending at 5th Street.

Metro’s Blue (A), Red (B), Purple (D) and Gold (E) line all have stops near the parade route. The transportation agency highlighted the following rail stations as being nearby:

  • Lost La Mesa officer had been victim of LA predator sentenced to 146 years in prison

    [ad_1]

Late La Mesa police officer Lauren Craven has been named as one of the victims of a Hollywood producer who has been sentenced to 146 years to life in prison.

David Brian Pearce, 43, was convicted of first-degree murder for the drug overdose deaths of a model and her friend in Los Angeles, along with charges that he sexually assaulted seven other women.

The Los Angeles Times and the New York Post reported that prosecutors acknowledged that Craven, a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, was among the sexual assault victims. According to the L.A. Times, the crime happened in February 2020 while she was a student.

Craven, 25, and a man were struck and killed Oct. 20 when she left her vehicle to assist him after a wreck on Interstate 8.

Craven was laid to rest Tuesday after a lengthy funeral procession in her honor; meanwhile one day after Wednesday’s sentencing in the Pearce case, another court hearing took place in San Diego, this time involving the officer’s accused killer.

Antonio Alcantar, the Navy police officer who allegedly drove drunk and killed Craven, along with De’Veonte Morris, 19, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Alcantar, 38, however, has yet to be charged in Morris’ death. According to Deputy District Attorney Spencer Sharpe, the investigation into the motorist’s death continues “due to the complexity of the accident.”

Alcantar was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the crash and later arrested. The prosecutor said his blood-alcohol-level was measured at twice the legal limit more than an hour after the crash.

In Los Angeles, some of the surviving victims of Pearce, along with the loved ones of a model and her friend he was convicted of killing, appeared in court Wednesday or provided victim impact statements. They called him a con artist, a manipulator and a wolf.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Eleanor J. Hunter imposed the maximum sentence on Pearce saying he is “the worst kind of criminal.” About the labels the victims and their loved ones used to describe him, she added, “all of them apply to you.”

Jurors deliberated about 2 1/2 days before finding Pearce guilty Feb. 4 of the murder charges stemming from the deaths of model and aspiring actress Christy Giles, 24, and her friend Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola, 26, who were taken to separate hospitals about two hours apart on Nov. 13, 2021.

Giles was already dead when she was taken to Southern California Hospital in Culver City, while Cabrales-Arzola, an architect, was taken to Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Hospital in critical condition. Her family took her off life support later that month.

The seven-man, five-woman jury also found Pearce guilty of three counts of forcible rape, two counts of sexual penetration by use of force and one count each of rape of an unconscious person and sodomy by use of force. The sexual assault charges involved crimes against seven women between 2007 and 2020.

Jurors also heard from five other women who alleged that they were sexually assaulted by Pearce in addition to the seven victims named in the sexual assault charges.

Craven’s father, David, had told NBC San Diego that his daughter’s drink was spiked, leading to a crime that required assistance from detectives and other members of law enforcement.

“I want to be that person for other women, and others, anybody in trouble that needs me,” he recalled her saying. “She decided right then and there, ‘I’m going to become a police officer.’”

One of the sexual assault victims told the judge that Pearce is a “predator” whose “actions have caused irreversible harm to so many,” and said he should never have a chance to walk free.

Another said Pearce’s actions have “changed my life forever,” adding that “no sentence can un-do the harm.”

Pearce, who denied sexually assaulting the seven women and giving the two women the drugs that killed them, has remained behind bars since he was arrested in December 2021.

Snell started with three fastballs, then avoided another one for 22 consecutive pitches before striking out Andres Giménez with a heater to end the second.

Ernie Clement added a fourth-inning sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead after right fielder Teoscar Hernández came up short on a sliding catch attempt as Daulton Varsho’s drive bounced into the right-field corner for a leadoff triple.

Another run scored on a wild pitch in the seventh by Edgardo Henriquez, who then allowed Bichette’s RBI single. Isiah Kiner-Falefa added a run-scoring single in the eighth off Anthony Banda.

“I think we just want to be the toughest outs we can possibly be,” Bichette said. “We’re a team, man, and we’ll do anything we can to win.”

  • Dodgers vs. Blue Jays, Game 5 tonight: How to watch the 2025 MLB World Series without cable

    [ad_1]

The 2025 Fall Classic is tied up again after Game 4 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays saw Toronto dominate to win 6-2. The World Series continues with one more game in Los Angeles tonight — Wednesday, Oct. 29 — at 8PM ET/5PM PT. The World Series odds favor the Dodgers ahead of tonight’s game. Every 2025 MLB World Series game will air on Fox and Fox Deportes.

Of course, Fox is a “free” over-the-air channel, so any affordable digital antenna will pull in the game if you live close enough to a local affiliate. But if that’s not an option, here’s a full rundown of how to watch the Dodgers vs. Blue Jays World Series, even without cable.

How to watch the L.A. Dodgers vs. Toronto Blue Jays, Game 5

You can stream Fox on any live TV streaming service that airs Fox local stations, including DirecTV, Fubo and Hulu + Live TV. MLB World Series games will also be available on Fox’s new streaming platform, Fox One.

DirecTV gets you access to Fox, plus the CW, ABC, CBS, Fox, ACC Network, Big Ten Network, SEC Network and plenty more local regional sports networks.

DirecTV also offers unlimited Cloud DVR storage and access to ESPN+’s new streaming tier, ESPN Unlimited. That’s all part of why we named it the best cable TV alternative without a contract.

The best part is that you can try all this out for free for five days. So if you’re interested in a live TV streaming service but aren’t ready to commit, we recommend starting with DirecTV.

We named Fubo the best live TV streaming service for sports, and it’s not just because it’s a great place to watch the World Series. Fubo TV gives you access to 100-plus live channels, including Fox and FS1. The cheapest plan starts at $85/month, making the live TV streaming service a significant investment. However, the inclusion of ESPN Unlimited, a $30/month value, is a great deal if you watch sports year-round. Fubo subscribers also get access to unlimited cloud DVR storage.

Currently, the platform is offering a free trial, allowing you to explore everything it has to offer risk-free.

You’ll also enjoy access to unlimited DVR storage, the ability to stream on multiple devices and more. Right now, you can get your first three months of Hulu + Live TV for $65/month. This special rate ends at 6PM ET/3PM PT on November 5.

Hulu + Live TV starts at $90/month after this deal ends.

That means you can watch every World Series game in one place.
