Viewers love the messy reality TV show Love the Blind.

A reminder to Detroit-area singles: As previously reported, Netflix is casting for local contestants for its popular dating show Love is Blind. And if Wednesday night’s Season 6 reunion episode was any indication, this season, too, will likely turn embarrassingly messy.

There are, of course, a few stipulations. One, the show is famously filmed inside isolation pods, where contestants can only communicate with their prospective matches through a speaker and must agree to get engaged before meeting in person (and, we guess, fucking). They then spend three weeks living in the same apartment complex in their city while learning more about each other and planning their wedding. Throughout the season, they also apparently drink lots of alcohol, which has in part been the subject of lawsuits brought by previous cast members against the show.

If you’re down with all of the above, you also have to answer a 69-question survey that includes information about your dating life, hobbies, dealbreakers, and a short 15-second video pitch, among other things. A third-party company then conducts background checks and psychological evaluations on the participants.

That background check and evaluation is necessary because Love is Blind is not for the faint of heart. Scrolling down on the show’s Wikipedia page reveals a “controversies” subsection with allegations of “inhumane working conditions” including reportedly being made to film drunk and being denied food and water, allegations of sexual assault while filming, and allegations of other abusive behavior.

Who knows — this might just be your chance for Detroit romantics to find their happily ever after – or at the very least, 15 minutes of reality TV fame and a pumped-up Instagram following.

  • WTF Fun Fact 13690 – Butt-breathing Turtles

    WTF Fun Fact 13690 – Butt-breathing Turtles

    [ad_1]

We’ve heard of mouth breathing, but never butt breathing. Yet it turns out that turtles can breathe through their butts.

Technically known as cloacal respiration, this biological feature allows certain turtle species to stay submerged underwater for extended periods during winter months. This essay unfolds the science behind this unusual respiratory adaptation and its significance for turtle survival.

Unpacking Cloacal Respiration (aka Butt Breathing)

The cloaca is a multipurpose orifice that’s found in various animals, including reptiles, birds, and amphibians, It serves as the exit point for the intestinal, reproductive, and urinary tracts. In some turtle species, the cloaca extends its utility to include respiration.

This process involves the absorption of oxygen directly from the water through a pair of sacs located near the tail, known as cloacal bursae. These bursae are richly lined with blood vessels. They facilitate the exchange of gases much like lungs do with air.

Cloacal respiration is especially crucial for aquatic turtles during the winter months. When temperatures drop, many turtles enter a state of brumation—a period of dormancy similar to hibernation. During brumation, turtles burrow into mud or settle at the bottom of ponds and lakes, places where they cannot access surface air for months.

The ability to breathe through their butts allows these turtles to remain underwater throughout the winter. This helps them avoid the need to surface for air and expose themselves to harsh conditions or predators.

    Species and Significance

Not all turtles possess this remarkable ability. It is primarily observed in certain freshwater species like the Australian Fitzroy River turtle and the North American eastern painted turtle. This adaptation highlights the incredible diversity of life and the various evolutionary paths organisms have taken to survive in their specific environments.

For these turtles, cloacal respiration is a key to their survival in cold environments. It enables them to exploit niches that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Implications of Butt Breathing for Conservation

Understanding unique physiological traits such as cloacal respiration is crucial for the conservation of turtle species.

Habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change threaten many aquatic turtles. Conservation efforts benefit from insights into turtles’ adaptive strategies. They inform habitat protection and management practices that ensure these remarkable creatures can continue to thrive in their natural environments.

  • WTF Fun Fact 13599 – The Florida Man Games

WTF Fun Fact 13599 – The Florida Man Games

    [ad_1]

Pete Melfi, inspired by a decade of zany “Florida Man” headlines during his tenure in radio and podcasting, wanted to recreate the spirit of those escapades. The unique challenge? Giving participants the thrilling experience of a “Florida Man” adventure, but without the threat of arrest. Enter the “Florida Man Games,” an athletic showdown promising wild fun with zero jail time.

First Responders Join the Florida Man Fun

Melfi’s rapport with St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick turned out to be a game-changer. Not only did Hardwick find the concept hilarious, but he also brought along a team of volunteers from the sheriff’s office. Their mission? To chase down participants in one of the event’s highlight challenges: the “Evading Arrest Obstacle Course.” This race sees competitors dodging police officers as they leap fences and dart through backyards.

    More Than Just Evading Arrest

The Florida Man Games, set for February 24, 2024, in St. Augustine, isn’t just about dodging the cops. The event roster includes the Weaponized Pool Noodle Mud Duel, where teams battle it out in a colossal above-ground pool. There’s also the “Beer Belly Florida Sumo” contest, a mullet competition, and the amusingly titled “Florida Ma’am” contest. One of the most anticipated showdowns is the “Brawl of the Badges,” where police officers and firefighters exchange blows in a friendly boxing match.

Calling All Teams: Enter the Colosseum

Sixteen select teams will experience the mayhem firsthand in the “colosseum,” as Melfi playfully dubs the venue. With a projected crowd of 10,000, including both competitors and ticket-holders, the atmosphere promises electric energy. Prospective teams need to act fast, as the entry deadline looms on November 15. By the month’s end, the final teams will lock in their spots, as announced on The Florida Man Games’ official website.

The Essence of The Florida Man Games

Beyond the chaos and laughter, what is Melfi’s true aspiration for the games? He’s after genuine, side-splitting hilarity. “Just as with the headlines, our primary goal is to induce laughter,” Melfi shares. To him, laughter is the most precious gift one can offer, and the games are his way of spreading joy.

  • Supermom In Training: $100 Birthday Party Series – Toddlers

Supermom In Training: $100 Birthday Party Series – Toddlers

    [ad_1]

Birthday parties can be no fun for busy overextended parents. I’m excited to bring you my $100 Birthday Party Series with great ideas for themes, menus, decorations and even gifts for all age groups, all for under $100. Come back every week for more birthday party suggestions.

Another wonderful milestone, another party to plan. Don’t worry – I’ve got you!

Here’s how to put together the perfect toddler party for less than $100.

First off, it’s gotta be a home party. You won’t be able to stay within budget if you host it anywhere. If the party is in the warmer weather you can keep things outdoors. Otherwise, clear as much space as you can in your living spaces, set up some extra chairs, grin and bear it indoors.

Start with e-vites – you can use a free website to send out your invitations as well as track RSVPs, which is perfect for busy parents.

Go with a theme that also makes it easy to come up with a corresponding menu. For example, if it’s a Paw Patrol bash, make finger sandwiches and cookies in the shape of bones, or top cupcakes with bone-shaped candy (you can find those at Bulk Barn). For a LOL ‘do, use lots of pinks and purples by making colourful fruit skewers, topping cupcakes baked in ice cream cones with sprinkles, or offering pink yogurt parfaits. Instead of spending an astronomical amount of money on custom-made desserts, print out a few small Paw Patrol/LOL logos and pictures, and use those instead.

You can even print the same images onto full label sheets and then cut them out to stick onto paper cups, plastic utensil holders, and goodie bags. It will be MUCH cheaper than buying all the copyrighted party supplies.

This is a great age to add a game or activity to the party – nothing too complicated or expensive, but a fun way to add an element of entertainment to it all. If space permits or the party is being held outdoors, obstacle courses can be fun, or anything involving lots of balloons (put prizes inside and let them all pop them). If it’s a colder month and you’re stuck indoors, play hot potato, pin the tail, or do an Easter egg-style hunt involving something fun, like treats, which they can put into a bag and take home as a goody bag.

Food should be the basics, as toddlers can be picky, so stick to pick-plates such as cheese and crackers, veggies and humus or dip, fruit, cold cuts, tomato pizza, baguette, etc.

    Happy birthday!
