    Artists Kevin Bynder, Sioux Tempestt, Luke O’Donohoe will be painting benches in Central Park’s gardens on September 28 and 29 as part of its Benchmark event.

    There will also be free activities such as circus pick-up and play workshops, interactive storytelling, stilt-walking, WA Wildflowers, Perth Plein Air sessions and live music.

    Past Benchmark artists Brenton See, Elly Sumner, Anya Brock and Marcia McGuire will return for a meet and greet.

    Bynder said he would celebrate his culture through his work by incorporating six Whadjuk Noongar seasons into his design.

    “Opportunities like Benchmark allow me to keep doing what I do best, which is keep the oldest living culture alive,” he said.

    “If I can do this through my art and storytelling, then future generations can continue keeping our culture alive.”

    Central Park general manager Tim Ward said initiatives such as Benchmark were vital to enhancing the culture in Perth’s CBD.

    “We are ultimately strengthening the partnership between businesses and art while enhancing the day-to-day experience of everyone who works at and visits Central Park,” he said.

    “Central Park aspires to lead the way in sharing the benefits of creative expression and promoting a better work life balance.”

    MANGHAM, La. (KTVE/KARD) — On August 26, 2023, around 12:15 AM, a Mangham Police Officer spotted a dark-colored Hyundai Accent traveling north on Hwy 425 with no tags. The officer then initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and approached the driver. 

    Another officer assisted in the traffic stop. The driver, 22-year-old Montrieze Sandidge, was advised that his vehicle did not have tags. Sandidge allegedly told officers that the car belonged to his mother.

    Officers detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle while talking to the suspect. Sandidge was allegedly unable to locate his driver’s license and was asked to exit the vehicle to provide his identity.

    Sandidge was asked if there were any weapons in the vehicle as well as any marijuana. Sandidge advised the back seat passenger, 22-year-old Jessie Wiley, had a firearm in his possession and there was marijuana located close to the center console.

    Sandidge was apprehended, and Jessie Wiley was removed from the vehicle. A search of Wiley uncovered a Glock 22 40 cal, serial number AGEH379, inside his pants. In the same location, marijuana was also found. 

    Wiley was asked if he had a conceal carry permit for the weapon, and he advised the officer he did not. At this time, Wiley was taken into custody.

    A new bipartisan bill to legalize adult marijuana use is introduced in the State Senate.

    It’s a joint effort by Republican Senator Dan Laughlin from Millcreek and Democrat Sharif Street from Philadelphia.

    In announcing Senate Bill 846, Laughlin said legalized marijuana is supported by an “overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanians.”

    He added with neighboring states New Jersey and New York approving adult use, the bill is needed to avoid losing out on hundreds of millions of dollars of new tax revenue and thousands of new jobs.

    BULAWAYO’s business community and motorists say they will boycott parking in the central business district in protest over the new pricing system introduced by Tendy Three Investment (TTI) and the city council.

    The new prepaid parking system, which will commence on June 1, will introduce weekly, fortnightly and monthly packages.

    In a recent notice to motorists and stakeholders, TTI indicated that the new packages would cost US$30 weekly, translating to US$4,30 per day, US$50 per fortnight and US$90 per month.

    But the business community and motorists said the proposed charges were not sustainable.

    “We have reached the final lap of preparations. The boycott announcement will come from the office of the secretary-general of the Bulawayo Business Development Association,” the notice put out by the Business Development Association read.

    “We have covered ground in holding meetings with key stakeholders, including the police in Bulawayo. We have also taken into consideration contributions and suggestions from the various platforms where the boycott conversation has been going on.

    “Firstly, we have come up with an information model to educate the public about the boycott.  Secondly, we will come up with the dates for phase one of the Bulawayo parking boycott. This will give us ample time to make alternative parking and transportation plans.

    The dispensary, off Colorado 105 just west of Monument, opened its doors to recreational sales Saturday, a recent shift many locals believe will bring a sizable revenue boost to Palmer Lake’s economy. 

    Alpine Essentials have been owned and operated by the Woodward family since 2015.

    NEW BUFFALO — Whether to allow the sale of marijuana in New Buffalo is now up to the City Council to decide.

    The New Buffalo Planning Commission voted 3 to 1 last week to recommend approval of a zoning ordinance specifying where marijuana shops can locate in the city.

    City Manager Darwin Watson said the council will begin the process next month of deciding whether to grant final approval to the proposed zoning ordinance, which would legalize the sale of marijuana in the city.

    Unless amended, the zoning ordinance would allow marijuana shops to locate in select locations primarily on the far east and far south sides of the city.

    POLOKWANE – Demonstrations were short-lived in Polokwane’s central business district (CBD) earlier today with protesters moving into the immediate townships of Seshego and Mankweng to join others who are also affiliates of the EFF for the #NationalShutdown.

    Police opened fire and several arrests were made for inciting violence in Seshego but the EFF say they will return to the CBD this afternoon.

    The deputy provincial secretary Rassy Maepa said negotiations were made with the South African Police Service for protesters to occupy the CBD this afternoon and into the evening as the party’s call for President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign continue. No time was given by Maepa.

    “Perhaps it was because we did not have police escorting us but now a greater police visibility will be present. We do not expect that they will open fire because fighters are disciplined people, however, we still plead that no normal operations should take place in the city because we would not be held liable for those that are found to be contravening the law,” he said.

    Maepa says the party’s legal representatives are now working on the release of those who were arrested.

    WSU researchers find CBD could show promise for reducing cigarette smoking – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    SPOKANE, Wash. – A team of Washington State University (WSU) researchers have found that cannabidiol, also known as CBD, could help tobacco users curve the craving for nicotine.

    According to WSU researchers, CBD is a non-psychoactive element of cannabis that inhibits the a key enzyme of nicotine metabolism. For those addicted to nicotine, using CBD slows the metabolism process which could assist in the quitting process.

    “The whole mission is to decrease harm from smoking, which is not from the nicotine per se, but all the carcinogens and other chemicals that are in tobacco smoke,” said Philip Lazarus, WSU Pharmaceutical Sciences professor and senior author on this study which is published in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology. “If we can minimize that harm, it would be a great thing for human health.”

    Lazarus says more research will be needed to confirm these effects and determine the proper dosage levels needed, however, these findings are showing promise.

    The WSU research team is currently developing a study examining the effects of CBD on nicotine levels in smokers. Once that’s finished, they hope to do a larger study looking at CBD and nicotine addiction.

    ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Thomaston police are investigating after thieves allegedly stole two Ford Mustang cars totaling nearly $200,000 from the Southern Ford of Thomaston dealership.

    A Ford Mustang GT500 Heritage and a blue Ford Mustang GT500 were both taken overnight Friday.

    “It’s really a special car, we are one of the lucky dealers that have it,” General Manager Chip Richardson said. “The Heritage was a numbered car; less than a thousand of them were built and everything was certified on it.”

    According to Thomaston Police, the thieves broke into the showroom and took not only the cars but the keys to most of the cars in the lot.

    “I don’t think this was someone coming to do a joyride, they knew what they were looking for,” Chief Mike Richardson said. “And I don’t think these are going to be chopped up anywhere, they’re heading somewhere.”

    The thieves disabled the security cameras, according to police.

    For those that run the dealership, it’s incredibly disappointing.

    “We’re a small country town and normally nothing happens,” Chip Richardson said.

    Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Thomaston Police.

    There is a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest.

    There is a thriving market for pet alligators in Michigan and many of the reptiles are killed or abandoned when they start to get too big.

    Local 4 investigated and found alligators for sale at an expo in Kalamazoo, among other locations.

    The Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary has 200 alligators under their care that had been abandoned. They are a rescue facility for unwanted reptiles.

    “One particular alligator was locked in a dog crate for seven years. He was never able to touch water or swim or touch the ground,” Lina Kelly said. “Some have come in really horrible situations where their mouths have been taped shut and I’ve had wounds all over their faces. So, some of them are locked away in closets and misshapen their spines.”

    Kelly said most people don’t realize how big alligators can get. They can reach up to 15 feet long and live for 60 to 70 years.

    What happens when alligators get to big?

    Local 4 went in undercover with cameras rolling to a Mt. Pleasant home where alligators are being sold.

    “How big are they gonna get?” Local 4 asked.

    “They can get up to 15 feet. I mean, so, they can get pretty big,” Mike Morningstar said. “Obviously, a 15-foot gator — it’ll kill ya.”

    Alligators can grow to be absolutely massive, but that doesn’t stop Mike and Raquel Morningstar from selling young alligators for $200 each. The couple admits the animals they sell usually wind up discarded.

    ‘They either keep them, or they eat them, or turn them into boots’

    “What do people do when they get really big?” Local 4 asked.

    “They either keep them, or they eat them, or turn them into boots,” Raquel Morningstar said.

    Raquel actually suggested people could eat their alligators when they get too big to handle.

    Baby alligators are also listed for sale online with ads that say they “won’t last long.” Who’s buying them? Mike Morningstar said random people.

    The Morningstars are licensed to sell alligators. They said they buy them from a breeder in Florida. They resell the animals and mail them around the country.

    “We started out with like six and then we had 10 and had an order of 18 and we had 12 more after that and they’ve gone quick,” Raquel Morningstar said.

    Mike Morningstar said that there are no legal issues in Michigan and that they can own and sell them. That it’s “not a big deal.”

    That isn’t completely true though. While there aren’t any state laws against alligator sales, some Michigan cities have banned them.

    The Morningstars told our undercover producer that this is the end of alligator season — but it’s not the end of the issue.

    Local 4 spoke with health officials in Detroit and they confirmed they are getting calls for alligators in the city.

    The sanctuary Local 4 visited said they have 200 alligators right now and worry more could be dumping off their pets as winter sets in and the gators continue to grow.

    LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A man who battled cancer is now taking his message on the road. The Lansing man biked more than 73,000 miles, that’s about three times around the world.

    Gar Watson is a cancer survivor and bicyclist. He started biking because of his cancer treatments.

    “I actually had been a couch potato for around for five years before I got this cancer, so that ended up being a wake up call and I started riding to my treatments,” said Watson.

    He rode his bike from his house to his treatments in Lansing, a 14-mile ride roundtrip.

    “My crazy riding started during my radiation treatments, which lasted three weeks.”

    Watson was being treated for stage four Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

    “I was tired,” Watson said. “I had weekly blood draws through all of this, but then all the other doctor’s appointments, I was tired of the roundtrip.”

    The cancer was nearly gone at the time of his radiation.

    “I’ve been very fortunate, very lucky, for the battle I know a lot of people go through in cancer, I got off easy.”

    But, he needed to do something to keep himself busy, so he started biking at 49 years old.

    “Cycling was a knee-jerk reaction to cancer,” Watson said. “When I started out, I was just doing trail rides on the river trail by myself.”

    Watson would go on to ride 1,000 miles each month for the rest of 2014, and a total of roughly 7,000 miles that year.

    “I logged all that stuff for every ride I did, so that’s how, that’s why I know I for the first four years I was averaging 1,000 miles a month.”

    Eight years after being declared cancer free and 73,000 miles later, Gar Watson is still hitting milestones.

    “So I have since 2014, since May or June since whenever I started riding, a little over 73,000 miles.”

    Watson said he did not have a primary care physician for a few years before noticing the back pain, which ended up being a tumor. He still regularly sees a doctor to make sure he is cancer free.
