A career is something you build on small successes and failures. But if you want to push your profession beyond your comfort zone, you will need a backup plan. Becoming successful in your work requires you to do what others cannot or will not do. With the simple, concrete steps below, you can push yourself into career-launch mode and see massive returns. Instead of fearing discomfort, you should embrace it. The more often you do something new and out of your comfort zone, the more comfortable you will become with doing that thing.
This will lead to an increase in confidence. The more confident you are, the easier it will be to do things outside your everyday routine. You will start seeking opportunities to stretch yourself or take on additional responsibility because you know that even though these things may make you uncomfortable, they are another way for your profession to grow.
You will also inevitably get better at whatever makes someone uncomfortable — whether it is public speaking or managing other people — and this makes those hours spent practicing worthwhile. The knowledge gained through experience sets a foundation for future success in any field.

The best way to truly learn is by doing. The only way you are capable of doing that is by letting go of your fear. Take calculated risks, but make sure the odds are in your favor. The crucial decision is knowing when to take a chance and when not to. Here are some tips to help you minimize risk as much as possible:
List all of the things that could go wrong if you do not take a chance (or if you do). How will it affect your life? Your career? What are some potential consequences? If this is not worth risking everything on, it is not important enough.
Identify what might happen if something goes right with this project or idea — how will it help your profession? Will it lead to more opportunities down the road? Does this have long-term benefits for yourself or others around you? Does this have short-term benefits for yourself or others around you?
The only way to be prepared for these situations is by experiencing new challenges. Try something new every day so that when an opportunity arises where you need to venture into the unknown, it will not seem like such a big deal.
The more comfortable you become with stepping out on your own, going against norms or doing whatever it takes, it will not feel scary because now you have experience using those tools and honing those skills in other areas.
Many say that failure is the best teacher, but what they do not tell is the best way to learn how to fail better next time. If you are constantly trying new things, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and making mistakes along the way (as long as they are not too costly), then there is no way for you not to improve — and fast.

It is easy to get stuck in the opinions of others, but this can stop you from making good decisions. If someone is telling you not to do something, and they do not have a good reason, then ignore them. What is important is your own opinion and what feels suitable for you. If you want to be successful, put yourself out there. This means taking on new projects and responsibilities that can help you grow in your profession. When you put yourself out there, you learn more about yourself, what motivates you and what your strengths are. You also know more about what kinds of projects or responsibilities make you uncomfortable or nervous.
By identifying these areas of weakness, you can figure out how to improve them. When future opportunities that require this skill set (or lack thereof) come around, they will seem manageable.
When you are dreaming big, you must be prepared to take risks and venture into the unknown. However, this does not mean you have to go all in with no plan to recover if things go wrong (as they inevitably do).
When planning for success, keep these things in mind:
Be prepared for failure: Think about what could happen if your plan fails, and work through those scenarios so that you know what steps you would need to take next.
Take small steps at first: Start small, and take one action at a time until you get closer to achieving your goal. Then move on until you meet your goal.

However, it’s also important to recognize the difference between confidence and overconfidence. The latter could lead to taking unnecessary risks and not managing the risks properly, while the former allows traders to make the right decisions even in adverse situations.
The best way to develop confidence is by practicing it. Be decisive when you trade. Good or bad, when you make a decision, stick with it. And whether the outcome is favorable or unfavorable, keep practicing that decisiveness muscle, and your confidence will grow.
Always remember: Be flexible in what you expect, but be decisive about what you do.
One of the biggest obstacles that traders face is fear and greed. Fear can lead to missed opportunities and profits, while greed can cause traders to hold onto losing positions for too long, hoping for a rebound that may never happen.
To combat these emotions, traders must first recognize them and then take steps to manage them by acknowledging the fact of uncertainty. Markets are constantly changing, and what works today may not work tomorrow. Traders must embrace that fact and constantly adopt a mindset that adapts to these changes. This requires flexibility and an open mind, and the willingness to learn and evolve over time.

Many people wish they could retire early — but it might not always be in their best interest.

A new study out of Binghamton University published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization found that early retirement can cause “faster cognitive decline among the elderly,” Business Insider reported.

The Binghamton researchers studied Chinese data on millions of older citizens who’d taken pension benefits to retire early and compared their outcomes with those who remained in the workforce.
The pandemic led to early retirement for millions of Americans (whether by choice or not), per The New York Times, but by April 2022, nearly 64% of adults between the ages of 55 and 64 were working — roughly the same rate as in February 2020.
Although those who didn’t return to work might enjoy better physical health, including improved sleep and a reduction in alcohol consumption, they’re also at risk for reduced social engagement, mental activity and, as a result, more rapid cognitive decline, the study revealed.

“The kinds of things that matter and determine better health might simply be very different from the kinds of things that matter for better cognition among the elderly,” lead researcher Plamen Nikolov said in a statement. “Social engagement and connectedness may simply be the single most powerful factors for cognitive performance in old age.”

“I don’t feel well. Call 911.”
That was supposedly what I said to my husband, who was sitting next to me at a midtown Manhattan restaurant, but I’m not quite sure. I do recall telling him a bit earlier about a new business angle my maternity brand, Emilia George, could potentially pivot to, as well as taking out my cellphone to snap a selfie while jokingly observing: “This is gonna be the moment when the next great business idea was born!”
Suddenly, all was a blur, and quiet — far too quiet for a New York eatery — followed by people around us panicking and wishing me well. Then there was an ambulance, a stretcher and siren, then doctors, nurses, EKG and blood work, and a few hours later my husband took me home. I’m a mom, so went immediately to check on my baby and toddler, but didn’t know what to say or think in the wake of the diagnosis.
It wasn’t long thereafter when I began asking, “Can someone continue to be an entrepreneur, a thriving and successful leader if he or she has panic attacks?”
Take it from me: In response to such a question, a great many in your circle will beg you to stop your entrepreneurial journey. This is because they assume, such attacks indicate that the stress of being an executive is simply too much.
And let’s be clear: Panic attacks are not to be taken lightly, and those who actively (or even vaguely) expect them to appear anywhere and anytime could impede their own self-confidence as well as the confidence of those on the other side of the table. But over some years, I’ve learned ways of handling anxiety while continuing to be an effective leader — methods that could help fellow entrepreneurs going through a similar challenge.

We all want to build successful businesses, but our lives do not end there. When a leader in a company prioritizes his or her wellbeing, everyone else follows, and a resilient team is built as a result. One example was my decision to close Emilia George boutique for a day when a staff member was not feeling well. Even though he proposed to keep the store open for “just a few hours more,” I refused, because the few sales we could’ve made during those hours were never going to equal a team member’s health.
All founders are on this entrepreneurial journey for the long haul. They may get a fiscal boost during sales seasons or fundraising, but physical health is the one asset that a leader needs to take 100% control of.
Leaders need to be able to trust their teams with healthy boundaries. And this is not a weakness, it’s trust. When there is no second-guessing or suspicion when a CEO needs, say, to be hospitalized or otherwise requires care from professionals, effective working relationships thrive.
When a solo entrepreneur starts to build a founding team, its evolution is much harder than one might think. Founding members are the ones that build the company culture, so it’s critical to pick those you can trust for the long haul. This is hard, and it takes time, but once you have such a core group, trust its members with your healthy boundaries so they know how to support you.

A paramedic told me once about a CEO who asked to have his head covered while being loaded into an ambulance — worried that company stocks would drop if the public knew he was ill. Of course, it’ll be New York Times “Stop the presses!” news if Elon Musk is taken into the hospital, but most of us are not on that rarefied wealth/influence list (yet).
It’s important to recognize that everyone deals with something challenging, whether health-related or not. Do not judge yourself because you are dealing with anxiety — even though I fully grasp the imaginary image any leader wants to maintain. Be at peace with the fact that you have an anxiety disorder, and may have panic attacks out of nowhere. The more accepting you are and less concerned you become about others’ perceptions, the more confident you’ll be in front of a team and the more reassured they’ll feel in turn.

Anxiety disorder among entrepreneurs is becoming more prominent and ramped up, particularly since the onset of Covid-19. Knowing you have it and not letting it deter your resolve and commitment to a business takes strength, as well as a support system. Once we embrace mindful actions to manage it, the closer we are to telling new and compelling leadership stories.

Emotional outbursts are a sign of exhaustion and even burnout … Take time to replenish yourself before you hit a wall.
Being resilient allows people to respond to unexpected challenges thoughtfully, with calm, grace and poise. But when we are depleted — physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually — we are more likely to react or even lash out when things go wrong. The challenges don’t necessarily need to be life-altering to spur a reaction when depletion is our reality. Something as simple as a comment, traffic or ruined plans can quickly seem catastrophic.
We saw an example of this level of serious depletion earlier this year at the Academy Awards when actor Will Smith lost his cool, storming on stage to slap comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife.
Smith’s wife, Jada, was resilient enough to deal with it in the moment with little more than a pained expression on her face. Rock demonstrated resilience by not getting angry, choosing instead to express his surprise and move to another joke. But Smith’s lack of resilience was clear from his reactivity. And more often than not, reactivity is the result of depletion.

Burnout is very real, however, it can be avoided through simple self-care rituals. We are all human, and we need to replenish our resilience so that we can best face whatever struggles come our way. However, many of us do not pay attention to our level of resilience until we are already running on empty.
About 49% of American employees say they are burned out from their jobs, a new survey by Eagle Hill Consulting, LLC finds. The rates are higher for women (54%) and younger workers ages 18-34 (53%), says the report, which blames staffing shortages and heavy workloads as causes.
Depletion is a root cause of burnout. When you are depleted, you are less able to deal with adversity, uncertainty and unexpected challenges. You are in a lowered state of readiness. Unfortunately, often we don’t notice we are depleted until something happens to test us.
The signs of depletion are all around us. Road rage, online rage and general incivility are all indicators that people are tense, reactive and triggered — like Will Smith at the Academy Awards. We didn’t wake up one day having lost our ability to be patient, civil and compassionate. We’re the same people we were before we got stressed out; we’re just less patient, less thoughtful, less considerate and less able to manage our emotions.
So, what’s the answer? Do we all need to take civility classes? Maybe, but it’s really not about that. It’s about the fact that people are exhausted. In that state, you’re more likely to be short with your kids, your spouse, your coworkers — and certainly with strangers.
Our human tendency is to deal with uncertainty or adversity from a place of fear. When our primitive fight-or-flight response is activated, our ability to think critically is diminished, overrun by defensiveness and even anger. We’re far less concerned that we might offend somebody with our words, actions or tone of voice. This is where smart people can make bad decisions.
We’ve always been tribal, so why does it seem we suddenly can’t be civil to one other anymore? I don’t think people have forgotten how to be civil. I do think many people are feeling depleted. A key indicator of burnout is overwhelming fatigue that threatens to overrun the body, the mind, the heart and the spirit.
It takes energy to be patient. It takes energy to be empathetic, compassionate and understanding. To have the energy we need to be at our best, we have to bolster our resilience and restore our energy before we need it.

In order to successfully bolster our resilience and restore our energy before we need it, we can establish rituals for renewing and replenishing ourselves in all four resilience zones: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. These are the daily habits we engage in to replenish ourselves.
Movement is healing. Simple acts, such as stretching and exercising can do a lot for all four resilience zones. They’re also a great way to interrupt a spiral or negative emotions that might lead to bad behavior.
Fresh air is revitalizing. Getting outside, taking a quick walk or engaging in an activity you enjoy outside stimulates those feel-good chemicals in your brain that we need to battle depletion. Daily doses of fresh air, outside of the cubicle or office walls, create space for a mental break as well — pulling double duty for your resilience.
Silence really is golden. Meditating and taking short but meaningful breaks throughout our workday interrupts the noise and constant information overload we are all subjected to on a daily basis. Rather than wait for overwhelm to take a break, schedule these moments intentionally throughout your day. If it’s on your calendar, you’re much more likely to follow through, which is half the battle when it comes to self-care.
It’s important to feed your brain. We don’t give enough credit to how new perspectives and growth can create a calming effect across our lives. When we read, invest time in learning or spend focused time on personal growth, it also creates more space in our lives to deal with difficult situations in more effective ways.
With practice, we can change how we react to stressful, unexpected situations. By creating and practicing rituals for recovery throughout your day, you are less likely to be depleted and better equipped to be patient, kind and compassionate — and, of course, to make better decisions.

It’s Dec. 20 and I’m sitting in my too-cold sunroom in St. Petersburg, Florida. The temperature outside is 61 degrees. I know. We Floridians have it rough. The time is 5:30 a.m.
This is a habit of mine to get up every morning by 5:30 and I’ve been doing it for so long, my eyes pop open without any need for alarm clocks — even on the weekends. I love the mornings. I love hot coffee and I love the opportunity to get still for a moment before the sun rises and my day begins.
Many of us have trouble meditating. The mind just doesn’t want to shut up. Thinking, thinking, thinking. We think we can think ourselves out of trouble. We stew about things that are irritating us. Many of us live in a drama every day. We have anxiety in our chests and a feeling of frustration we’re constantly trying to shake off.
Life becomes something we’re “getting through.” We survive, we persevere and we hope for happier days ahead. We’re waiting. Waiting for retirement. Waiting for things to slow down.

Sitting still in quiet darkness with only your breath allows you to tune into the present moment. Listening to your breath with your eyes closed in total aloneness, you’ll find that there is pure peace in that. A sensation of calm will wash over you like a warm blanket.
But watch — here come the negative thoughts. They’ll start to creep in. Thought flow will enter. The mind is tricky; it wants in. You’ll need to be strict with your mind. This is the time that you set aside for yourself. Just like when you’re starting to work out, there will be resistance. There will be a feeling of “I can’t do this.”
Stick with it because it’s a practice; results won’t happen overnight. Show up every day and give 10 minutes, 15 minutes, whatever you can. Over time, the benefits of your practice to stay in the present moment will start to show up in your life. For business owners, staying in the present moment is a superpower. It’s where creativity lives; it’s where passion lives; it’s where true happiness is.
By giving your mind a break, you’re cleaning house. Decluttering. You’re creating a space between your busy, overthinking mind and what really is important.
After meditation, grab your journal and map out your day. Think about how you want your day to go. Step into it with a plan and don’t sacrifice your health. Put it first. Remember, you can’t think greater than how you feel. Do the things to feel your best self first.
From that space, move into your day.

Reminding yourself that the present moment is exactly where you need to be allows for deeper connections with people. When you’re really present, people can feel it. When you walk into the office, you’ll have an air of positivity about you. When someone needs you and you give them your undivided attention, they’ll remember it.
If something unsettling does pop up, give it your full attention and then let it go. It’s gone. Onto the next thing.
Breathe and reset. If it really throws you for a loop, take 10 minutes for yourself again and remember the truth. It only lives in your mind now. The event passed. Let it go.
It takes a lot of energy to feel negative emotions. You can actually feel it physically. The head feels heavy. The shoulders and back and jaw feel stiff. Teeth grinding (bruxism) affects millions of people. You know why? We hold stress in our jaw. We’re not loose.
Staying in the present moment preserves our energy and even cultivates energy. When you’re not worried and you’re instead happy to be where you are, positive energy flows through you. You’ll be able to get to the things you’ve been meaning to and even have energy left over to have some fun.

When you’re in the present moment, peace washes over you. You’re not looking for what’s next. You’re happy with what is.
You’re not worried about what happened in the past and you’re not worried about what’s going to happen in the future. You’re just here. Appreciation and gratefulness blossom inside of you.
As a business owner, you may be saying, “But I have to plan and push forward. My drive is what gets us to the next level. It keeps us growing.”
The drive doesn’t need to go away. It’s healthy to map out your goals and work toward those goals. But remember, what you’re looking for is not there — it’s here in the present moment. If you’re a human being on this earth, you want peace, health and happiness.
You may want riches, too, but don’t sacrifice your health to get there. That’s the old way. We’re learning so much about the mind, body and human behavior. If you study people that are successful in all areas of their life, you’ll quickly see a pattern: presence; appreciation; a desire to learn and grow; and a deep connectedness to nature and what is in the heart of oneself. I wish you all much success in 2023.

To the surprise of many, she was mostly silent last year when Hulu aired the popular miniseries Pam & Tommy, which chronicled her tumultuous relationship with rocker Tommy Lee.
Now Anderson is back, and she has a lot to say.
In her upcoming memoir, “Love, Pamela, and Netflix documentary, “Pamela, a love story,” which both drop on January 31, Anderson opens up about a number of shocking incidents from her topsy-turvy life, including revelations about actors Tim Allen and Sylvester Stallone, and a disturbing story of revenge on an abusive babysitter.

In the documentary, Anderson reveals that she tried to kill a female babysitter after years of being molested by her.
Growing up in Ladysmith, Canada, Anderson said an unnamed babysitter abused her and her brother for years.
“She always told me not to tell my parents. I tried to protect my brother from her,” Anderson said.
She admits to trying to kill her one day. “I tried to stab her in the heart with a candy cane pen.”
Although she was unsuccessful in her attempted murder, Anderson told her she wanted her to die.
“She died in a car accident the next day,” she says. “I thought I’d killed her with my magical mind, and I couldn’t tell anybody. I was sure that I did it, that I’d wished her dead and she died,” continues Anderson. “I lived with that the whole of my young life.”
Anderson recalls having a disturbing encounter with Home Improvement star Tim Allen in her memoir.
One of Anderson’s first roles was as Lisa the Tool Girl on the show.
“On the first day of filming, I walked out of my dressing room, and Tim was in the hallway in his robe,” she writes in an excerpt from her memoir “Love, Pamela,” which Variety obtained ahead of the book’s release. “He opened his robe and flashed me quickly — completely naked underneath.”
Allen denied the incident in a statement to CNN.
“No, it never happened,” he said. “I would never do such a thing.”
Early in her career, Anderson says Rocky star Sly Stallone approached her with a proposal he didn’t think she’d refuse.
“He offered me a condo and a Porsche to be his ‘No. 1 girl,’ ” says Anderson in her Netflix documentary. “And I was like, ‘Does that mean there’s No. 2? Uh-uh.’”
Taken back, Stallone told her to think twice before rejecting him.
“He goes ‘That’s the best offer you’re gonna get, honey. You’re in Hollywood now,’ ” Anderson says.
Representatives for Stallone told The New York Post the incident didn’t happen.
“The statement from Pamela Anderson attributed to my client is false and fabricated,” said a spokesperson for Stallone. “Mr. Stallone confirms that he never made any portion of that statement.”

We, as entrepreneurs, are problem solvers and creative thinkers. To see success in business, we must be good at a few core skills. We must be good at solving a specific problem for a specific type of person. We must be good at finding the right people and managing those people. And we must be good at solving the problems that arise in our businesses from the chaos that the world brings.
We all know that even with the perfect plan, we still run into problems. It’s how we deal with those problems that dictate the end results in our business. The human mind has evolved to create more comfort for us. We’ve designed houses, cities, supply chains and much more to solve problems and also create more safety and security in an uncertain world. It’s in the crafting of these types of environments that we create a better world for ourselves, and, ironically, a worse one at the same time.

The more comfort we create for ourselves, the more we crave that comfort and allow that comfort to coddle us and lure us into relaxing our pursuit of betterment. Many of us tell ourselves the story that if we just have the Peloton, that tonal or that home gym set up, we’ll work out more.
The hard truth is that once we get those things that we tell ourselves will create a successful routine for us, many of us stay the same. Now we just have a new living room ornament and a reminder of the failed promises that we’ve made to ourselves every day. We tell ourselves, “Tomorrow, I’ll use it.” And then another day goes by, and it’s unused.
I’ve been there, too. For five years, I told myself, “I’ll quit heroin tomorrow.” And then, the next day came, and I found myself sticking a needle in my arm. Until a day came when the pain of staying the same was bigger than the pain of changing. So, I quit and haven’t touched it since. Was it easy? No, but what in life that’s worth it is easy? Not much that I’ve found.

Most of our habits aren’t nearly as harmful to our health, our relationships and our business as heroin. But the continued practice of being comfortable and sitting on our laurels, thinking we’ve made it because we have a business that pays us a certain amount month after month, year after year, can be nauseatingly comfortable and therefore harmful. It’s that type of comfort that we get lured into that can cause catastrophic damage when a large problem arises, and we’re not prepared to solve it because we’ve let our metaphorical tools become dull and our muscles weaken.
In business, I’ve found that we are at war with ourselves and at war with the tendency to crave comfort over the habit of the consistent pursuit of success. So, it’s not the environment outside that we must cultivate to create success. It’s the internal environment that we must shape and prune to create the success we truly desire.
With lifting weights, it’s the last few reps when we’re in more pain, fully exerting ourselves and feeling the maximum amount of strain, that create the most significant changes in our muscles and physique. It’s also the times when we feel like giving up, throwing in the towel or procrastinating starting the thing we know we should be doing in which we need to change the internal environment and create habits of execution.
Life will get in the way; that’s inevitable. Children, headaches, feeling low on energy, needing to get one more thing done at work — the list could go on as to the excuses we could allow ourselves to use to continue to procrastinate the things that we know we need to do. The true power lies in realizing that we’ll never get more time in the day and that we need to prioritize what’s most important, which is self-worth, self-trust and the habit of showing up.
Yes, burnout is a real thing. And we are only capable of doing so much every day. We’ll never be able to create more time in the day, and that’s why we must create an environment inside, a set of decision-making skills that allows us to be the most effective we can possibly be with our time and our energy. That can show up as being willing to let go of control and empowering employees so that we can allocate our time and energy to different and more critical tasks and activities. It can also mean not allowing ourselves to be distracted by social media and motivational content and only allowing ourselves to be satiated by doing the things we want the motivation to do.
So, in 2023, I’m going to be creating an environment for myself and my business that allows me to stay consistently on the path toward greatness, and I encourage you to do the same. I’m not going to allow my old habits to destroy the person I know I can be and will become, and I surely won’t let the outside world dictate the way I show up. I hope you don’t either.

Small habits can lead to big results. Aim to get 1% better every day. So let’s say you want to lose weight. Don’t obsess over losing 15 pounds, but commit to jogging for 10 minutes every day. If you consistently lace up your shoes for jogs, that bigger goal will come. As James Clear says, “Time magnifies the margin between success and failure… Good habits make time your ally. Bad habits make time your enemy.”

People with specific plans for when and where they will perform a habit are more likely to follow through.
By shifting your identity and aligning your actions with your values, you can make lasting changes to your habits. Decide the person you want to become and take steps towards it with small wins.
Double up on your current habits that exist and add new habits. It’s most effective to make a firm commitment in writing with the following format: “After I [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT].”
Some examples include:
1) Meditation – “While my Nespresso machine is producing delicious God-given coffee, I will meditate for one minute.”
2) Exercise – “After I take off my work shoes, I will immediately change into my workout clothes.”

Traveling is a big part of life for most entrepreneurs. As an artist and owner of a business that specializes in niche marketing and PR, I need to be presentable no matter where I am. Traveling is a huge part of what I do, both for business and pleasure. I do work from anywhere and everywhere: Whether it’s in a camper or a fancy hotel lobby, on a ski lift, at a bar or even when I’m at my grandma’s house for a family dinner.
I’d like to share a few tips that have helped me eliminate challenges and enabled me to focus no matter where I am. As we like to say in German, udbung macht den Meister, which means “exercise makes a master” — learning by doing is surely the way to go. Here are some insider tips to make your life easier:

Keep your things clean and organized. This will allow you to find exactly what you’re looking for faster, so you can keep focused on the task at hand instead of getting distracted by searching for something you’ve lost. Reorganize your travel bag, backpack or computer bag every day. It will take only a few minutes if you do it regularly.
Airports, business meetings, packing, unpacking, scheduling calls, trying to get some sleep and still look decent can get chaotic. Make a to-do list of things that must be done in just the next 12 hours, not more. Don’t overdo it. Create that list every night, and put it out next to your phone or laptop so that it is the first thing in the morning that you see. Keep it around you all day until you are done with it. For example, your daily list might look something like this:
Unwanted mail, advertisements and things of that nature can be an annoying challenge and create clutter. You can make a daily contribution to sustainability by using the opened envelopes from the mail you receive to create your to-do lists each day. I like to use orange or purple ink to write my lists — there’s more on the reason behind that in the next section.
An understanding of colors and how the overall environment subconsciously affects your mood and wellness is crucial if you want to be able to work more efficiently anywhere, at any time. Regarding colors and their typical effects, some of the most uplifting and motivating, yet not overstimulating colors include green, purple and orange — hence, my choice of ink colors referenced above. Blue is known to calm the senses but can perhaps make you too calm and possibly trigger depression. Red is often associated with anger or aggression. The precise effects of color on each individual depend on their personal circumstances, so it’s best to conduct some research based on your own needs.

Studies have shown that exposure to nature benefits mental health and reduces stress. Depending on where you find yourself, put yourself in a position where you have a view of something that is either relaxing or neutral, not overstimulating. For example, a mellow restaurant or coffee shop with an outdoor patio area (preferably) that has a view of the majestic Pacific Ocean would be relaxing (as long as the surf does not look too scary that day!) When I was recently on the exotic island of Kauai in Hawaii, I chose a view of the volcano canyon which encompassed the beautiful rain forest with an entire color palette of greens.
When in New York City, there are many designer boutique hotels with great décor and colorful art in the lobbies. You don’t need to stay there to work there. The surroundings have a mood-elevating effect. Or you could bring the work to a museum; for example, a place such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art inspires me to be more creative.
Art has a huge impact on mental health and stress reduction. Different images, paintings, photographs or sculptures can affect you in multiple ways. Once again, the colors play a very important role as well. If you are in a tight spot, facing a time constraint or an imminent deadline, try to stay away from the color red as it tends to bring up negative feelings. On the other hand, if you feel down or are experiencing low energy, the color red can help in a smaller dose. For example, you could wear a red t-shirt or set up a red screen protector. Choose blue or purple for more creativity and mellowness. Purple also helps enhance problem-solving skills, orange supports optimism, and green fosters a sense of harmony. Avoid images that could trigger stress or those that might bring up bad memories. If the art or the color in your immediate environment is creating issues for you, set yourself up elsewhere in the room.
Use a tool as a gentle reminder to keep you in a focused working mode. It could be anything, such as a sticker on your laptop that shares a positive message or even some uplifting words on the mug that’s by your side. A nice little notebook that could also be used for the above-mentioned to-do list can be easy to consult. Additionally, you can write down some thoughts and reminders to “tune out” from all that surrounds you. Sometimes it can be good to put yourself into working mode by creating a pleasant bubble and keeping the outside world out of it.

Disneyland and Disney World both sell balloons up and down Main Street USA. Dana Bisbee
Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing the brightly colored balloons every time I walk down Main Street, but I’d personally never waste my money on one.
They average between $12 and $17, and they just become a hassle for you all day.
You’re not able to bring your balloons on any rides, so you’ll either need to tie it to a stroller (if you have one) or see if a cast member, what Disney calls its park employees, can hold it for you by the attraction entrance.
If a balloon is an absolute must for you, I’d recommend waiting until the end of the day to buy one to avoid the headache.

Disney comes out with limited-edition and themed popcorn buckets all year. Dana Bisbee
This may be controversial because there are some diehard popcorn-bucket collectors out there, but I always skip them.
They usually range between $17 and $25, and new buckets are released seasonally at the parks. On release days, people can spend hours waiting in line to buy limited-edition buckets and I’d personally rather spend that time riding a few rides.
If you’re a major fan of Disney popcorn, you might be able to buy enough discounted refills to make the savings worth it. But you also have to lug the buckets around the parks with you all day.
Although they’re cute, I ultimately find the popcorn buckets to be impractical. I’ve only ever purchased one, and it’s just sat on a shelf collecting dust since I brought it home.

Disney sells a whole range of pet products. Dana Bisbee
As a proud fur mom, I love the Disney Tails collection and think it has great product design. But I never buy any of the pet toys.
The toys range from $18 to $26, and I just can’t justify spending that much on something my dog will destroy in 12 hours.
If you’re absolutely dying to bring your pet a special treat from your Disney trip, I’d recommend a collar, harness, or even a spirit jersey instead.

As a child, I remember begging my parents to buy me a lollipop every time I saw one of the giant stands. But as an adult, I never bother with them.
The lollipops average between $3 and $7, but there’s nothing truly spectacular about them.
Other than the pretty plastic packaging that just gets thrown away, it’s a regular-tasting lollipop you could find anywhere. There are so many better park treats in the same price range.

There’s some expensive outdoor gear in Disney’s Nat Geo line. Dana Bisbee
Last year, Disney released a National Geographic merch collection in the parks. It mostly offers hooded sweatshirts, joggers, puffer vests, and jackets that range from $40 to $190.
But I think the collection feels out of place. If I’m going to spend $190 on a jacket, it’s not going to be at the Disney parks.
If you find yourself cold and in need of a jacket or sweatshirt, there are other options ranging from $50 to $90 throughout the parks.

I worked on Main Street selling bubble wands. Dana Bisbee
As a former “glow” cast member who sold things like light-up toys and bubble wands, this one hurts.
I loved getting to play with all the bubble wands, but I’d never spend $25 to $32 on them.
They don’t come with much bubble liquid, meaning you’ll need to buy refills if it’s being played with all day. I’ve also found that they can be easily breakable.
There are other more durable toys in the same price range available at the Disney parks.

I don’t think the key chains are worth the price. Dana Bisbee
The Disney key chains are cute and can make a great souvenir to bring back to a loved one, but I never spend my money on them.
They range between $9 and $15, which I find to be pretty expensive for a small piece of plastic.
If you’re looking for something that will last longer and serve as a better reminder of your trip, consider picking a mug or a pin for a similar price.
